OCAL residents were horriďŹ ed recently to ďŹ nd the stream running through the Mellons Bay beach front reserve running ‘white’. John Champion called the Times angry that “someone has poured white stuff from a sub-division and it’s now going down the storm water drain and ending up in the stream that feeds into the seaâ€?. He was also cross at the amount of time that passed before he was told an Auckland Council environmental ofďŹ cer was on the way to the incident. David Frith, Auckland Council’s team leader southern incident investigations says three calls were received from members of the public, concerned at white discolouration of the water in the stream at the 206 Mellons Bay Road council reserve. However, he says, when a pollution incident investigator arrived on the site, the pollutant had been washed away and the stream was again running normally. It was therefore not possible to track back and identify the source of the pollution. “It is not uncommon for painters and/or home handymen to mistakenly wash brushes used with acrylic paint in areas where the washings can enter storm water drains and then into natural streams,â€? he says. “A typical paint brush clean-up is of short duration and, unless happening repeatedly, is often not visible long enough to be tracked back. “On carrying out its investigation, Auckland Council believes this was the situation in this case.â€? An extremely small amount of acrylic paint, Mr Frith says, can affect a surprisingly large volume of water and can be very visually intrusive. “Fortunately it is often not highly toxic to marine life in its highly diluted form and no lasting damage is expected from this incident.â€? The council says residues should be either washed to the sewer, or simply onto the lawn to avoid this situation.

HE came out of the closet at 25. Melissa Mills had a tough time admitting that she heard voices from the other side in her head. Brought up as a Catholic, she was afraid to come out in the open to admit she had psychic abilities. GREENLAND Bakery & Cafe at Botany Town Centre picked up three silvers in the national pie awards on Tuesday. Greenland’s Bill Liem won silver awards for his chicken and vegetable, gourmet meat (chicken, bacon, mushroom) and his vegetarian (pumpkin, broccoli, vegetable) pies. He has featured prominently in previous years and in 2013 won the supreme award for his mince and cheese pie. Meanwhile a Kiwi favourite stole judges’ hearts to take away the hotly contested title at the 19th annual Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards. A potato-top pie from New World Greenmeadows bakery, Napier, won the coveted supreme pie award, beating out 512 other competitors. The awards were presented at a gala dinner. Described by the judges as a perfect ratio between a avoursome ďŹ lling, a

Till then, Melissa – who has got her accreditation from British clairvoyant Lisa Williams – continues to do workshops, stage shows, readings on Skype and in person, even as she uses her abilities to raise funds for the television programme she hopes will be aired soon.

In this column back in April I mentioned that pick-up trucks are the top selling vehicles in the USA, and that New Zealand is also ‘getting close to the point where, like America, a pick-up could be this country’s most popular vehicle’. Well, it’s happened already. Ford’s Ranger pick-up was both the top selling commercial and top selling new vehicle overall last month. It’s also number one overall for year ending June 30, knocking Corolla off its perch. This strong result comes

Support offered to defence families A
CAMPAIGN is underway to let Kiwi troops in Iraq know that the RSA (Returned and Services Association) is behind them and their families. It has taken on board a recent initiative involving local RSA members providing local families of current serving personnel in Iraq muchneeded ‘time-out’ with activities for children and some ‘me time’ for the mums once a month. RSA national president BJ Clark says the RSA wants to develop the concept further so it can provide this kind of support to all service personnel and their families, regardless of whether they are overseas or serving in New Zealand. “We understand the nature and demands of modern conflict and the impact it has on serving personnel
and their families at home. It’s a priority to us that the 140 troops serving in Iraq know that we support them and are here to support their loved ones back in New Zealand.” The RSA, he says, is working closely with the New Zealand Defence Force and Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand to ensure that all of their respective services support current serving personnel and their families’ needs before, during and after deployment. “While many New Zealanders associate the RSA with our much older veterans, our support services are available to all current and former service personnel and their families, and particularly recognise the additional issues of those who have served in overseas operations. “It can start with as little as an understanding ear to listen confiden-
tially to your concerns, a supportive chat with other veterans, or access to financial assistance and specialist services. “This is where the funds raised through our Poppy Appeal are deployed and we want as many people as possible to know that they are available and, more importantly, to access them.” RSAs throughout the country have support advisers available whose key purpose is to connect individuals and families with the range of support services from the organisation. This could be anything from advice on benefits and financial assistance to supporting applications for entitlements and service through Veterans’ Affairs and respite from the pressures of family life. Candy from strangers How safe are children these days? With stories of vans cruising the eastern suburbs with unsavoury motives, the Times carried out an experiment to test how guarded the children of today actually are By NATALIE BRITTAN THEY were like kids at a candy store, except it wasn’t a candy store, but a local school, playground and park. On the last week of term and over the school holidays the Times visited childfriendly spaces with a collection of disarming lollies such as Sour Patch, Fruit Bursts and Smoothie Chews. On the steps of Mission Heights School the Sour Patch was a big hit with a group of 11-year-olds who held out their palms for more. When asked if any of them would go to a car to retrieve more, there was a chorus of yeses. Later the crowd dispersed and a trio of girls left behind soon became wary. “We have to go now” and “We live really far away” were the responses received. At the height of school holidays at the popular Snakes and Ladders playground in Farm Cove, the experiment was explained to two mums watching over their children. Young Atalia and her four-year-old friend Bronte stood no chance. Atalia’s older brother Ethan soon succumbed and so did their friends, Thomas, eight, and Phoebe, 11. Thomas’ mother and Phoebe’s aunty, Debbie Sirett, says she was surprised as ‘stranger danger’ had been enforced in curriculum from kindergarten to primary school. “I always thought they knew not to talk to strangers and not to accept candy,” says the Farm Cove local. As Bronte’s mother whisked her daughter away chiding her, Ms Sirett says: “She’s not very impressed, she’s just shocked I think.” “Thanks for the eye-opener!” Atalia and Ethan’s mother, Jenny Ese, laughs. Her children attend Remuera Intermediate and she
says children’s safety is similarly stressed. However, Mrs Ese says there is also a fine balance between common courtesy and common sense. “I’d be more upset if my children ignored someone. To me I’d think it was quite rude on their part.” A following visit to Lloyd Elsmore Park proved fruitful. Miss Six-and-a-Half hanging off the monkey bars wanted a Strawberry Smoothie Chew and asked if she could have another for her twin brother. Her mother, waiting in the wings, was similarly hard on her child. An Early Childhood Education teacher, she had taught her children safety passwords so they know who is safe and who isn’t. Botany community constable Stewart Green says while schools and police work together to ensure children’s safety, parents have to play their part too. “Children shouldn’t accept things from strangers or go with strangers. If they do get approached we ask them to remember facial features and get a car rego number.” Retired policewoman and Howick Local Board member Adele White, who was heavily involved in youth education, says the results are alarming but, at the same time, there is a wider focus. “Education given to students prior to the 1980s focused on ‘stranger danger’,” says Ms White. “However, police statistics indicate that children are more at risk to physical and sexual abuse from people they know, people they trust and people they love.” As a result the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme, which encourages reporting of abusive behaviour, was developed by police and covers ‘stranger danger’, says Ms White. It should be reinforced, she says.

A breath of Fresh Ayer By Farida Master

T WAS a bit of a struggle initially but now Natalie Park is absolutely thrilled that the silk jumpsuit she designed is going to be showcased next month at New Zealand Fashion Week, the biggest designer event of the year. The Howick girl who is in her last year at NZ Fashion Tech believes it is “an awesome opportunity” to be one of the 10 designers selected for New Zealand Resene Designer Selection Show at Fashion Week on August 26. “I’m so stoked about it,” says the 18-year-old. The story board behind the design and fabric is an interesting one as it threads together different backdrops and creative sensibilities. The fabric that Natalie used to craft the garment was a flaming orange
sari, hand-woven in India, a nation whose zest for colour has long been woven into beautiful fabric. The collaboration was born out of a rare partnership between NZ Fashion Tech, Resene, New Zealand Fashion Week and India. The 50 silk saris for the project were created by families of weavers working with ancient looms in their homes in a southern Indian sari village called Doddampalayam, 70km from the city of Coimbatore. Last year, 10 NZ Fashion Tech students won the Prime Minister’s scholarship for Asia and spent five weeks in India. The challenge for the design students was to create garments out of hand-woven silk saris in a burst of vibrant colours. Natalie says that this year at a briefing, students were randomly
sequenced to choose their sari and though she was the last one to make a pick, it didn’t bother her too much. “I could see how the design could be structured. My jumpsuit is called `Breath of Fresh Ayer’.” Describing the thought behind the cut and colour she says: “The deep pleat like ridges leading up to the peak becomes illuminated at sunset, radiating pink and orange beams of light. “I imagine that when Maya, an imaginary character, wears my garment she feels strong, empowered and undefeatable standing atop Ayers Rock.” Right now, the former Macleans College student, who used the 700 million-year-old sandstone monolith as an inspiration, feels empowered that her design will be displayed at the Fashion Week ramp with 10

Five students from Auckland and five from Wellington will open four Resene sponsored public shows at the Viaduct Events Centre. The designer judged to be the winner of the 2015 Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour Fashion project will win a trip for two to Dunedin to attend the ID Dunedin Fashion Week as a member of the audience in March 2016.

WHITFORD may have a bird garden but Beachlands has its own private bird sanctuary. Beachlands man Adrian du Plessis will be entering 30 of his feathered friends which will feature among the nation’s best birds at the New Zealand National Topflite Bird Show staged at the Howick Leisure Centre from July 31-August 2. Organised by the New Zealand Federation of Bird Clubs, the event showcases nearly 2000 avian specimens, many of which are rare, including budgies, canaries, finches, parakeets, parrots, quails, British birds, lovebirds and
cockatiels. Some birds will be on sale and there will be a display by the Moths & Butterflies of NZ Trust. Mr du Plessis has been breeding finches for nearly 40 years. The native South African recalls a particularly chilling experience with an African cobra. “I was feeding the birds and up came the snake! It was between me and the door. I kept on shouting and eventually somebody heard me and asked what was going on. That was scary,” he told the Times. and one for breeding purposes. The general aviary stretches 15 metres across his lawn, is fully enclosed to protect the flock from wind, has its own ventilation system and a special waterproof floor. However, there are plans to relocate the enclosure. “The wife says it’s got to go!” he says. The sheltered breeding aviary houses 15 pairs of birds separately, and has its own watering system which contains a harmless amount of disinfectant to curb bacteria. n The bird show is open to the public July 31, 2.45pm-5.30pm; August 1, 9am-5.30pm and August 2, 9am-1pm. Entry fee is $7 for adults, $3 for children and $17 for families. A
SOCIAL club for singles in their 40s, 50s and 60s has stood the test of time and celebrates its 20th anniversary soon. New Horizons Social Club was formed after a group of people broke away from an existing club. At the first meeting seven members turned up but, as the club grew in strength, membership reached 200 on some occasions. Current membership is about 100 people. However, the core members who make up an informal organising committee say the lower membership is probably a sign of the times as many interest and social groups suffer from lower numbers. Social media, they muse, is also taking over many peoples’ lives. Janice Brown-Bayliss says the club is not a dating or match-making group. “That’s not to say that relationships are not formed because sometimes they are. But we are a singles social club for people in the 40-69 age bracket, where you can go out and enjoy a get-together with like-minded people,” she says. “Some members are still with the club since the beginning and others are members of many years standing.”

The club functions around events published in a monthly newsletter distributed to all the members. Activities range from movie nights, pot luck dinners or lunches at a member’s home, weekends away, dinners, lunches and brunches, walks and activities that can be enjoyed with other members of the group. A committee meets monthly, looking after the day-to-day running of the non-profit-making club. Most of the members are from
the Eastern Suburbs, but some come from as far as North Shore, Manurewa, Papakura and other parts of Auckland. To celebrate the 20-year anniversary, the club will hold a birthday party at the Pakuranga Sailing Club on August 22 to which past members will be welcome. He drives the talented company of singers and dancers through the lead-up to his own wedding, when he is unceremoniously dumped by fiancee Linda, played by Angela Mason; sings his way through the grief with an impassioned Somebody Kill Me; and then experiences final joy as he makes it back
to the altar with winsome waitress, Julia. With just two day’s notice Lauren Edmonds temporarily steps in for leading lady Lili Latham, delivering a powerful performance as Julia. Her voice is pure and sound, reaching a crescendo with Robbie in their final duo, Grow Old with You. Another highlight of the performance is the resonance of the men’s voices. Robbie and his sidekicks, Sammy played by Henry Warner and dreadlocked George, Oliver Mitchell, make a comical threesome. But when they are joined by Bryce Kehoe as Bum and Tautai Palu as Ricky in an energetic rendition of Single the sound of the male voices is pure joy. Mitchell also delivers a compelling rendition of George’s Prayer in the Bar Mitzvah scene. FIVE STAGS at the Hub of Whitford Community Opened on June 26 and already the heart of the rural community
I
t hasn’t taken long, but already Whitford’s vibrant new gastropub, Five Stags, has established a fine reputation and really has become the heart of the rural community. It opened on June 26 and is based in the village’s best-known colonial building where the former General Store was. It’s a building dating back to 1910 with a colourful past including various guises – from a knitting shop, to a restaurant and even at one stage, a brothel. Proprietor, John East, is a wellknown Howick local. He is the Deputy Chairman of the Pakuranga Rugby Club and managed the Pakuranga Premiers rugby team for five years up until this season. He is absolutely determined to keep that sense of community at Five Stags. “I had this in mind when I was recruiting staff and my team of 20 is made up exclusively of locals. It’s a community-based facility.” A former butcher and telco manager, John made a complete career change to start the business. His love of the iconic Whitford building, a chance meeting and the desire for a change of lifestyle with his partner, Jane, all led to his new role as ‘head stag.’ “Growing up around here, the General Store has always been part of my life, so it’s a real treat to own her after all these years. She has so much history and is such a special place in the community; we hope to honour that and steer her well for years to come.” And the new character of this old
building really works well as a community meeting place or village hub. Many local groups are already using it as their regular meeting place. “People have been swarming in and loving the atmosphere at Five Stags and many locals are already well-established as regulars. We have had great support from the Whitford locals and the wider Beachlands/Maraetai district.” While the outside of the building is unchanged, the new interior is totally different and very welcoming with the atmosphere of a rustic hunting lodge. And it’s a good fit for the Whitford district where deer reportedly roam
in the nearby forest. Appropriately, your first impression when you walk in is of the five stags keeping watch over the timber bar. Comfy leather couches, booth seating, tartan and timber look perfectly at home with horse and farming kit and other rural memorabilia from the past 100-plus years. Repurposed as a wine cellar, an original post office vault features in the dining room and photographs charting the community’s history are displayed on the walls. A new bar sits centrally within the space, with a bar area off to the left and lounge and dining to the right. A ‘Hunter’s Cabin’ functions as a
semi-private dining or meeting room, while outside the wrap-around verandah has ample new seating and a double-sided fireplace. The meals at Five Stags are predictably suitable for hunters and friends alike. Portions are generous and at affordable prices – good Kiwi, rustic tucker. Large plates include the Barry Crump tender slow-cooked beef short ribs with spicy L&P and Wild Turkey glaze with crispy duck fat potatoes; and the Captain Cooker, a two-person serve of roasted pork with parmesan, lemon and sage, and baked, creamy sweetcorn. Smaller bites range from seared
smoked duck breast with cherry compote, preserved orange and port glaze; to country terrine with chicken liver and brandy pepper pate, wholemeal toast, sweet onion confit and Cumberland sauce; and hot smoked South Island salmon with fresh dill, pickle, sour cream and rye bread. Fresh from the sea, chef Jonny Murray’s signature fish and chips are generously portioned with two fillets of fresh Mac’s Gold-battered gurnard, crispy Five Stag chips, tartare sauce and lemon. Burger lovers are well catered for with beef, chicken and fish options and another of the chef’s specialities is the Clevedon Coast Classic Caesar Salad. There’s a wide choice of premium and craft beers on offer, with seven on tap including Stella Artois, Steinlager Classic, Speight’s Gold Medal Ale and Mac’s Gold. And an impressive selection of the best regionally specific wines includes drops from Wither Hills, The Ned, the Marisco Kings Series, Mt Difficulty and Huntaway. LITTLE-KNOWN sport with potential for growth and the ability to teach children life skills is being promoted by two budding entrepreneurs. Pakuranga College Year 13 students, Tony An and Rory Moore, both 17, have chosen Ultimate Frisbee as a business project for this year’s Young Enterprise Scheme competition and their NCEA qualification. They have established Layout Ultimate Frisbee Tuition which they are offering to school and after-school/ holiday programmes. Currently they are teaching children participating in the Mellons Bay School SKIDS afterschool programme. They have started planning talks with Bucklands Beach and Somerville Intermediate Schools to start tuition programmes next term once the weather warms up for outdoor activity. And they have Macleans College in their sights to help involve more college-aged students in the sport. Ultimate Frisbee involves two teams competing against each other in order to get the frisbee to the other side of the field. One must pass the frisbee to their team member to get to the other side. Once a team member catches the frisbee they must pass it on without moving a foot. Once a frisbee is dropped there is a turnover to the opposing team. The business partners say they are both passionate about the sport. Tony, who is the company’s chief executive, says it’s “not a sport everyone knows about or likes and we want to get it started in New Zealand as a major sport. It’s growing but it’s not at a pinnacle. Many schools and

colleges don’t have it. It’s not big in East Auckland. The sport, Rory says, is big in the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan. The World U23 Championships are currently on and many countries are involved. “It’s starting to pick up here,” he says. “But we’re giving it that extra push and we are interested in promoting it to a younger audience. We are showing schools and kids what a great sport it is because hardly any of them know about it. ”
Tony says people like him and Rory are needed to start things up. “A few years ago in the USA it would have been groups like us who got it going.” The game, he says, is self-referred which teaches young people responsibility. Players know the rules and the game is based around the spirit of the sport. A lot of schools are keen on the attributes of the sport because it teaches life skills. “There is no contact so it’s relatively safe,” he says. “And boys and

girls can be in the same team. Not many other sports have that.” Tony is contemplating pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce next year while Rory is mulling over a degree involving outside activity, such as landscaping. However, both are keen to keep their business up and running once they become tertiary students. Meanwhile they are working towards a September review after which they hope to make the Young Enterprise finals and score a firstthird place ranking. They are also
aiming for a merit or excellence result from their NCEA review. They say they would never have established their company without sponsorship from the Highland Park Shopping Centre and mentorship by its manager, Bruce Waller. The sponsorship provided start-up funds for frisbees, sports bibs and other gear. “Bruce has also mentored us, giving us advice,” Tony says. “We would never have done it without him. Bruce has played a big part in our business life so far.”

“Not everyone could perform in front of judges and an audience on an Olympic sized ice rink ... however, this weekend, skaters from all over Auckland did just that,� says Sam Snoad, the Auckland Ice Figure Skating Club (AIFSC) synchro coordinator. Locally-based club AIFSC held their first qualifying competition of the 2015 season on both Saturday & Sunday mornings at Paradice Botany at the weekend. Suburbs become crime-free areas By FARIDA MASTER

UT of destruction and devastation comes incredible growth. This particularly applies to quake-ravaged Christchurch. It is now touted as one of the most modern and progressive cities in the world. Giving a host of community organisations a peak into the sustainable strategies for crime preventions being incorporated into the new building designs of Christchurch was Sue Ramsay, crime prevention team leader of the Christchurch City Council. At the Community Safety Breakfast hosted by Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS) at the Howick Club last week, Ms Ramsay spoke about SafeGrowth and building safe communities with specialised designs and likeminded organisations. In the audience were Mayor Len Brown, Howick Local Board chair David Collings and deputy chair Adele White. Giving an example of the Christchurch Bus Interchange which is near a late night entertainment hub, the expert on crime reduction, illustrated how the architectural designs that ensured public transport areas were well lit and easy to reach, made the people waiting for public transit feel safe. Even the washrooms had glass entry doors to avoid conspicuous behaviour. The strategy involved in implementing a SafeGrowth plan essentially focuses on Crime Prevention

through Environmental Design (CPTED). SafeGrowth is a shift towards a new style of prevention theory in planning neighbourhoods, which could prove beneficial in planning new areas like Ormiston. It was first implemented in a troubled, suburban neighbourhood in Toronto, Canada and has proved to be very effective. Whilst focussing on sustainable method for redeveloping urban places, Ms Ramsay also spoke about free public solar charge tables in Christchurch that allows users to relax and plug-in their devices using free solar energy from a range of ports. Close ties with US I
’VE had the privilege of visiting Washington DC this week as part of a political exchange between the New Zealand and the United States of America. The exchange is part of the American Council for Young Political Leaders programme funded by the US State Department. It is all about strengthening ties between younger political leaders from around the world and the US. Whilst in Washington I have also taken the time to meet with Senators, Congressmen and State Department ofďŹ cials. It’s clear from all of these interactions that New Zealand is seen very much as a close friend. This hasn’t always been the case, but our relationship has really developed in the past decade. The NZ-US relationship is cemented by the warm friendship of our countries respective leaders, Prime Minister John Key and
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany President Barack Obama. New Zealand and the US have a lot to gain from one another. Our relationship extends back many decades through war, trade, international security and cultural connections. We are the small partner in the friendship, but New Zealand and its people always punch above their weight. Our number one trade goal is successful negotiation of the Trans PaciďŹ c Partnership trade agreement which would open up greater access to US markets for New Zealand exporters. It was very reassuring to see the support for negotiating TPP amongst the
members of Congress I called on. It was clear the US appreciates New Zealand’s willingness to be part of the coalition to tackle ISIS. Although our 140 military trainers in Iraq is small compared to other nations, we have expertise in training personnel and we are respected in this role. There is also support for the calm and measured approach New Zealand is taking to its role as a member of the United Nations Security Council. We are ying the ag for smaller states which is important in UN decision making. Our country is viewed by our friends in the US as a successful and stable democracy. We should be proud of this. As a New Zealander I could not have asked for a more positive and encouraging welcome from all those in Washington that I have seen. Long may our two nations’ friendship develop and prosper.

OU asked for comment on traffic issues in Howick/Pakuranga/ Botany/East Tamaki. Let me get started. As background, let me say that I have spent 50 years driving in high density traffic situations across the USA and I am incredulous that basic traffic easing practices used in that country have yet to find their way here. Free left turn at a traffic light. Across the USA (free right turn of course) it is the default action at traffic lights. When it is dangerous to do so for lack of sight distance, there is a sign saying NO TURN ON RED. In Auckland at most intersections there is, so help me, a RED ARROW preventing this turn even though traffic may be clear. No right turn RED ARROW. In many intersections it is safe to pull
Traffic volumes
I COMPLETELY agree with the article written about traffic volumes (Howick and Pakuranga Times, July 16, page 3). I use the Smales Road-Harris Road lights on a daily basis and watch an average six cars get to turn right before the lights change. At the Ti Rakau-Te Irirangi intersection there is often only three cars let through the right-turning arrow before the lights change during a weekday. The same happens at the Ti Rakau-Reeves Road intersection where there is not enough room to get straight across the intersection due to there being nowhere to go If turning right from Reeves Road into Ti Rakau Drive there is also often between three and five cars let through before the lights change to red, at any time of the day. In the morning before 9am on a weekday there is only room for an average three cars to turn right from Pakuranga Road onto Ti Rakau Drive as the intersection is completely chocked. It is almost as if the traffic turning left on these main intersections need to be stopped 30 seconds before the next light phase, to provide enough space for some cars to get through intersections. It is quite easy to see why motorists get frustrated and run red lights! I’m sure there would be a great number of motorists that would appreciate the lights staying on the green phase for another 15-30 sec-

Light phasing to blame
I’M RESPONDING to your article in the Howick and Pakuranga Times, July 16. I have recently encountered terrible waiting times at the intersection of Te Irirangi Drive and Botany Roads. One Saturday morning my husband and I were in the line of traffic to turn right onto Botany Road and waited over seven phases of lights to even get the right turn phase. A few weeks later I was stuck at these same lights mid-week for 12 minutes, the same thing happening with the phasing completely missing the right-hand turn. I came home and reported it and they said they would send a technician out to look as nothing was actually showing up as wrong from their end. This again happened to us a fortnight ago at the same lights and resulted with traffic behind us performing some pretty hair-raising

Stupid planning: If you come from the airport and want to go to Botany, you have to get off the South Western Motorway and drive through Manukau City and through the Great South Road/Redoubt Road intersection, one of the densest traffic intersections in South Auckland. No off or on ramps to or from the south at Te Irirangi/SH1 intersection, even though this is the main road south from the east. Two-lane bridges on the Southern Motorway at Mt Wellington Highway and Takanini rail crossing where SH1 is three lanes each way. The net result is traffic jams when a “shock wave” occurs at the choke points once the traffic density reaches a critical point – a phenomenon known to every traffic engineer outside of New Zealand.

Chinese outbid everyone
YOUR article in the Howick and Pakuranga Times, July 16, “Reprehensible racismâ€? seems to focus mainly on the so-called racist overtones from the Labour leader. Any New Zealander attending a house auction in Auckland will testify (if they observed) that the ďŹ rst to drop out are the born New Zealanders, next those of South African origin, leaving the Chinese to out-bid everyone else. Something is radically wrong when Kiwis are unable to buy a house in their own city. As regards the jumping up and down by Barfoot & Thompson, they are more than prepared to sell New Zealand birthright so long as Barfoot & Thompson can click their heels all the way to the bank. A real estate agent of my acquaintance, who works for another company, said that their company had sold houses to Chinese not living nor intending to live in New Zealand, some of which the purchasers are prepared to leave empty and depend on making a proďŹ t on the gazumping house prices in Auckland. Of course Chinese are not the only purchases of New Zealand real estate, but they seem to be the major ones right

I HAVE lost count of the number of times I have wanted to turn right off Pakuranga Road into Cascades Road, but have been prevented by a red arrow, despite there being no oncoming trafďŹ c. To add to the annoyance, when some oncoming cars do ďŹ nally arrive, they are often stopped with a red because our green arrow has now decided it should come on. And twice in the last week I have been in a similar situation in a queue of about 15 cars in Karangahape Road wanting to turn right into Queen Street with straight ahead trafďŹ c getting a green light, no oncoming cars, but a red arrow prohibiting those wishing to turn. When the green arrow did eventually come up, it only lasted for ďŹ ve seconds (I timed it) and only two or three cars out of the 15 could turn in that time. Unsurprisingly, 16 per cent of women said leaving the toilet seat up is the biggest mistake a man can make in the bathroom, while eight per cent of respondents said they get frustrated by their loved one leaving the toothpaste tube in a mess in the morning. However, the biggest annoyance is hopping into the shower to find a partner or flatmate has used up all the hot water, leaving a cold shower to start the day, with close to one-third (30 per cent) of people saying it’s the worst habit someone can have. Heading into winter, the survey has revealed four in 10 New Zealanders are often surprised at how high their electricity or
gas bill is. As a result, more than threequarters (76 per cent) of Kiwis have rules in place in their home to help save money and look after their environment. Nearly half of all households (47 per cent) have a shower time limit in place for their families, and a further 28 per cent have reduced the temperature of their hot water to save. A tenth of respondents (10 per cent) said they had resorted to sharing showers and baths to save power. IWIS don’t shower daily or wash their hands after using the loo. And they are sick of their partners leaving the toothpaste in a mess and using all the hot water, according to a new survey. The study, commissioned by Rinnai, investigated Kiwi’s attitudes to bathroom hygiene and toiletry etiquette, showing some less-than-sparkling habits when it comes to showering schedules. A quarter of respondents (25 per cent) said they don’t shower or bathe every day, with 19 per cent admitting they only shower every two days. A further six per cent (268,000 people) confessed to showering every three to six days or less than once a week. Hand washing habits are not much better, with one in four of the survey respondents admitting they don’t wash their hands every time after going to the toilet. About 3 per cent (135,000) confessed they hardly ever, or never, soap up after a visit to the loo. The survey revealed that men are more relaxed about hand washing than women. Only 72 per cent said they wash their hands every time, compared with 79 per cent of women. The survey also revealed that picking up the towels and bath mat off the floor is the secret to relationship harmony, with close to one in three (27 per cent) saying the bathroom being left in a mess bugged them; and 14 per cent (625,000 people) said they’re incensed if their beloved doesn’t change the toilet paper roll. Taking too long in the bathroom is a bugbear with one in 10 (11 per cent of those surveyed) saying it’s the worst habit their partner could have. Backing up a well-known stereotype, close to twice the number of men (15 per cent) said this is a problem compared with women (eight per cent).

UPER CITY residents buying new houses with unconsented decks or other additions should not assume they won’t have to remove it. From last July 1 Auckland Council introduced a new policy that will be consistent across the region and not a mix of legacy council rules. Ian McCormick, general manager of the council’s building control department says the rules around unconsented works have always been important. “What doesn’t change is the fact that anything unconsented will need to have a Certificate of Acceptance (CoA) to meet the current New Zealand Building Code, not the code at the time of the additional construction. “This is a very important considera-
tion for home buyers and for real estate agents,� he says. “A ‘she’ll be right’ attitude doesn’t stop a major structural failure, such as the deck we saw collapse in Te Atatu last year.� The new policy, he says, will ensure compliance across the industry, at the same time ensuring that emergency repairs or minor oversights on otherwise compliant structures are not unnecessarily challenged. To ensure a building meets the current building code, there is a requirement for all CoA applicants to attend a pre-application meeting with the Building Control Department, providing as much information as possible. The meeting will help decide the
council’s response including if there will be an infringement fee. “If the council believes the construction would not have attained consent, then there may not be a processing fee, but instead there will be a discussion about how the issue will be resolved, including how the infringing building structure will be removed, if necessary,� he says. I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

AY Olympic certainly started confidently, and for the first 10 minutes dominated territory and possession, but without seriously threatening Perosi’s goal. It was evident early that the break was affecting Buckland Beach AFC’s touch and quickness of thought and action, with too little movement off the ball to create options for the ball carrier, and passes not going where intended. However, BBAFC never looked over-awed by their high-flying opposition, never looked as though they would concede a goal, and gradually worked their way back into the game. Sofia, Katie, and Sophie R all had the measure of the Bay attack, and as the half progressed the midfield started to win the numbers game in midfield with Rachel, Danielle, Hannah, Sophie L, and Bella matching Bay’s competitiveness. In the spell prior to half time BBAFC really began to take the game to a clearly frustrated Bay side, succeeding in dragging the Bay defence and midfield out of position and putting the Bay penalty area under good pressure, but
without being able to find the final quality ball. An absorbing half, especially considering the conditions. 0-0 at the break. Half time instructions were to maintain the pressure and provide quicker options, but it was Bay who came out stronger, obviously determined to achieve the victory they expected. The second half followed the pattern of the first, with Bay starting the stronger, and BBAFC battling their way back into parity without looking likely to concede the goal Bay were desperate for. The composure of the defence was excellent, as were the efforts of the midfield in denying Bay any space in BBAFC’s defensive third. BBAFC at times played some excellent football, at other times, technique and movement let them down as they counter attacked. A goalless draw always looked to be the outcome of this game and, despite late scares for both goals, (Perosi had it covered), that is how it ended. This was only the third game Bay hadn’t won all season and may have a significant effect on their
title aspirations. For BBAFC, holding Bay to a thoroughly deserved draw was an excellent effort, especially given the lack of games and trainings in the preceding two weeks; the effects of that were definitely noticeable. Perosi was comfortable in goal and confident acting as sweeper when required. The “usual” defence, along with Rachel, were solid in defence, and composed when looking to build from the back. Denying a Bay team averaging nearly four goals a game any serious opportunities is a measure of their performance. Player of the day to Sofia for a totally dominant display. How did BB do in their biggest test?? Safe to say this wasn’t their best footballing performance. However, to hold such quality opposition to what was really quite a comfortable draw, and to do that without being at their best is most definitely a big pass mark, and a true measure of the significant progress this young side has made during the season. ■■ Source: BBAFC website

Desperate Dans delivered T
HE most pleasing aspect of the All Blacks 39-18 win against Argentina last Friday was that several Desperate Dans took their opportunity at the Last Chance Saloon. Prominent among them was Dan Carter, Sonny Bill Williams, Israel Dagg and Luke Romana who all lifted their games enormously from their Super Rugby championship dross in rewarding the national selectors faith. It was Carter, Williams and Dagg’s best game in two years and easily Williams’ ďŹ nest since his return from rugby league this year. In fairness, all had had injury issues. But, once again, the improvement in form upon coming under the guidance of the All Black coaches has been remarkable. In attacking the line, Carter restored faith he can actually regain his status as our best ďŹ rst ďŹ ve-eighths following strong Super 12 performances from Lima
Sopoaga, Beauden Barrett and Colin Slade. With his all-round kicking game on song and his body ďŹ nally sound after so many crippling injuries over the past four years, Carter is regaining conďŹ dence. In executing four glorious ofoads and several crunching tackles, Williams oozed absolute class in what was his best game in the black jersey. Dagg was brave under the high ball and ran with a conďŹ dence and zest not seen from him all season, though injuries had undisputedly handicapped him. It was also wonderful to see No 8 Kieran Read return to something approaching his best, regaining the ball from Carter’s kick-offs and showing his class as both a runner and distributor. The front row of Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu and Owen Franks tamed the renowned Pumas scrum and replacements Wyatt Crockett, Codie Taylor and Nepo Laulala maintained the pres-

tempt the selectors to play Ben Smith on the right wing and Dagg at fullback when naming their top starting XV for major games. With Ben Smith, Dagg and Savea certainties for three of the World Cup squad fullback/wing berths, it would seem Piutau and the exciting Nehe Milner-Skudder are left to battle it out for the other. Meanwhile, the All Blacks can expect a much tougher test of their mettle against South Africa in Johannesburg this weekend after they were unlucky to be pipped at the post by the Wallabies in Brisbane. It was a game the Springboks should never have lost after leading 20-7 before their coach threw it away by replacing his front row and seriously weakened his pack. It is a mistake he is unlikely to repeat as his team seeks to upset the All Blacks applecart before their own ardent fans in their bid to remain in the Rugby Championship race.

Mirkov nabs two tennis titles L
OCAL boy Alexander Mirkov, 10, has won two agegroup tennis titles at the 2015 Rod Laver QLD Junior Championships in Australia. Mirkov, who lives in Howick and attends Shelly Park School, won the under 10 boys singles title and also claimed the under 10 boys doubles honours with tennis partner and fellow Kiwi Finlay Emslie-Robson from Christchurch. The Rod Laver QLD Junior Tennis Championships is the largest junior tennis tournament in Australia. This year, 1703 matches were played in all age categories from under 8s to under 18s. There were 60 competitors in the under 10 category. Mirkov was seeded 12th in the singles and eighth in the doubles with Emslie-Robson. He plays at the Cockle Bay Tennis Club and also trains at the Wilson Tennis Academy in Manukau.
