t’s not the kind of news you want, or expect, to get at work. But just after 4pm last Friday afternoon, Clevedon’s Richard Sumner picked up the phone and heard every homeowner’s worst nightmare. “I was at the office and I got a phone call to say that the house had been struck by lightning,” he told the Times this week. He later found out that lightning had actually struck two pine trees on his driveway on McGregor Rd stripping bark – before the power surge arced across to a fence, onto power lines and then into his house, blowing the fuses on the power supply. The surge then went to the

under floor heating in his bathroom, blowing that and a ceramic tile off the floor, which shattered and hit the roof – putting a hole in it. The induction hob in the kitchen also blew. Mr Sumner said he was told by his family that were home at the time that “it was like a huge bang in the house”. It gave his wife and nephew “a real fright”, he said, and it was very lucky that no one was in the bathroom at the time. “Realistically, we got off pretty lightly.” The Fire Service and power company were called to investigate for any sign or risk of fire and after the all clear was given, power was turned back on a couple of hours later.

Mr Sumner said his next-door neighbours, on the same power supply, also had damage to their house from the lightning and power surge, including blown light bulbs and a clock falling off a wall. Meanwhile, at the same time on Friday, about 100 metres down the road, Amanda Trayes was reporting a similar experience. She told the Times that a flash of light came through her skylight in front of her. “I was on my phone at the time and my friend swore loudly when it happened. The hairs on the front of my legs stood up and my legs were tingly after. I got an instant headache and saw spots for several hours after.” “Near miss perhaps,” she said.

Confession: The day I tackled public transport Deputy editor Marianne Kelly is pleasantly surprised with her travel experience By Marianne Kelly

recently declared I wouldn’t buy a SuperGold card by the July 1 deadline because I was unlikely to travel on public transport in the near future. I was wrong. An invitation to a late afternoon function at a flash central city hotel initiated groans as the ramifications of tackling the Southern Motorway at the afternoon peak time kicked in. Flash of inspiration. What a perfect chance to test out how the public transport system works from the transport wastelands of the southeast. But first things first. I need a SuperGold card after all. Given the furore around long queues at the Botany Town Centre AT (Auckland Transport) service centre, I decide to present myself there in person rather than setting up a card online. Given that the July 1 deadline has passed, how difficult will this be? Arriving at 10.30am finds me competing with one other lady on the same mission. Behind the counter are two people processing the applications and another is dealing with payment and issuing the cards. It’s taken all of about three minutes and I am good to go. Now I

have to make that journey within the next 60 days to initiate the card. No problems, I’m off to the smoke of the Downtown CBD. But which mode will I choose? Living a short walking distance from Howick’s Picton Street, I’ll catch a bus from there to the Panmure rail station where I’ll connect with a train to the Downtown Britomart station – a short walking distance from the hotel I’m going to. I’m not so inclined to change from rail to bus on the return journey. So I’ll instead opt for an express bus from the stop at the bottom of Anzac Avenue, although I’m not so sure about the walk from the hotel. Now it’s a question of trawling ATs journey planner web page which turns out to be remarkably straightforward once I’ve established how much leeway I need to give myself between each part of the journey. Armed with card and itinerary - including a taxi company phone number, just in case – I’m off and away. If I can negotiate my way around the London Underground or international airports, surely I can handle this. I’ve given myself extra time to allow for contingencies. So I catch the 2.45pm 550 bus from Picton Street, and arrive at the Panmure

Rail Station at 3.10pm. The next train rolls in at 3.20pm and I’m at Britomart by 3.40pm. It’s hard to know at this time of the day whether the journey by car, including parking, would have taken more or less time. But I’m more than happy with someone else at the wheel of the bus/train. My function is being hosted by

none other than the guys and gals of AT, all ears to know what I think of my journey. Marvellous, thanks, and yes I will have a glass of wine considering I am on public transport. However, my idea of going home on the express bus isn’t so sound when I’m told it’s rush hour and the bus will spend the same amount of time as the cars crawling down the motorway. Best to take the train. I’m on board at 5.32pm and arrive at the Panmure Rail Station at 5.50pm just as two Howick & Eastern buses roll in. I’m at home in Howe Street, Howick by 6.20pm. I wonder where I would have been if I had taken the car. AT is planning to introduce its new south-east network towards the end of next year. Its decision to run fewer buses from Botany and Howick to the city centre with more terminating at the Panmure rail station makes complete sense to me. For one day I’ve removed one car from the motorway. Now I’ve got the hang of this, I’m encouraged to visit the buzz of the Downtown CBD more frequently – now where did I put that SuperGold card. ■■ Key change to proposed new AT network, page 5

Stuttering start to election bid By Marianne Kelly It’s a tradition for Howick Ward councillor Sharon Stewart to collect Auckland Council nomination forms in person. So she was shocked to arrive at the Manukau Service Centre in Manukau to find staff on reception oblivious to the fact that Friday, July 15 was the opening of nominations for the upcoming local body elections. Worse, they had no idea where to find the nomination forms. “The staff should have been advised of how to deal with the public coming in to get nomination forms,” she says. And the issue did not just affect Howick, but

Eventually the forms were found but, she says, “it’s not good enough. council’s service centres have been trained to advise candidates on the nominations process and each service centre has been provided with a set of nomination forms for their area. “Unfortunately a trained staff member at Manukau Service Centre was not available last Friday morning when Councillor Stewart visited. The nomination forms were available at the service centre but could not be immediately located by other staff. “We have apologised to Councillor Stewart, couriered a set of forms to her and implemented steps to ensure we always have staff cover in future.” Candidates can also download nomination

forms from the council website, they do not need to be collected in person. Elected roles include local boards, councillors and mayor, along with district health board representatives and licensing trust members in some areas. Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll. Nominations close at noon on August 12. Voting documents are posted out from September 16 and must be received by the electoral officer by noon on election day October 8. Police statistics for cameraissued speed offences since 2009 show that Counties Manukau East figures rose to the highest in the police area in 2014 at 35,422 compared with 26,610 in Counties Manukau West, 24,786 in Counties Manukau Central and 22,670 in Counties Manukau South. Last year the East ranked third after the West and Central. The statement says police would be delighted to never have to issue another notice for people driving above the speed limit or too fast for the conditions – “just as we would be delighted to never have to attend another serious or fatal crash caused by speed, or knock on the door of another family to tell them a loved one is never coming home again. “Apart from the fact it costs us money to issue notices, it would show that people were driving safely and appropriately for the road conditions and the number of people killed and injured on our roads would plummet.” Police, the statement says, do not measure success by the number of infringements issued, but

Cameras are placed in locations assessed as being at high risk of speed-related crashes, including those where people have died or been injured. The assessment process uses expert independent analysis based on a decade of crash data, and in-depth knowledge from police and other local traffic experts. The site selection process has produced valuable information for all road safety partners. High risk sites that aren’t suitable for a static camera can instead be iden-

In 2014 the social cost of crashes involving drivers speeding was about $740 million, about 23 per cent of the social cost associated with all injury crashes, according to government transport research. Speeding was a contributing factor in 78 fatal crashes, 357 serious injury crashes, and 995 minor injury crashes, a police statement provided to the Times says. These crashes resulted in 84 deaths, 455 serious injuries and 1468 minor injuries. Speed is acknowledged globally as being the single most important determinant of road crashes, the statement says. In New Zealand, driving too fast for the conditions contributes to about a third of all fatal crashes. Speed cameras and officer enforcement have long been part of a range of safety tools used by police to help bring down mean speeds and reduce trauma

on our roads, and will continue to be used as and where appropriate. There is well-documented evidence linking speed and road trauma, the statement says. Research shows that by reducing speed the severity of a crash can be significantly reduced and in many cases avoided. For vulnerable users, such as pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists, even small reductions in vehicle speeds can save their lives in a collision. Two studies show how reducing speeds has a direct impact on reducing death and injuries. ■■ The likelihood of casualty crash involvement doubles for every five kilometres an hour above a 60 km/hour posted limit, and for every 10 km/h above a 100km/h posted limit. . ■■ A five per cent decrease in average speed leads to about 10 per cent fewer injury crashes and 20 per cent fewer fatal crashes. A World Health Organisation review of evidence from speed studies shows that a decrease of one km/h means traffic speed typically results in a three per cent decrease in the incidence of injury crashes, or a decrease of 4-5 per cent for fatal crashes.

New network boosts trains By Marianne Kelly

ewer buses to the city centre and more terminating at the Panmure rail station are in store for south-east public transport travellers. This is a key change to the proposed new Auckland Transport (AT) network made as the result of public feedback between last October and December. The network is scheduled to be implemented late next year. The rationale behind the change is that journeys between Panmure and the City Centre are faster by train. The train also offers a more consistently reliable travel time as it is free from congestion. Having multiple bus routes between Panmure and the City Centre duplicates the

rail network and increases the complexity of the bus network by the routes sharing a single corridor, AT says. There is also limited space to accommodate increasing volumes of buses in the City Centre. Designated as a Metropolitan Centre under the Auckland Plan, Botany will become the hub of public transport in the south-east with most routes in the new network feeding into it. Changes have been made to two core frequent routes, 55 from Howick and 53 from Botany. Route 53 will operate as the main all-day service from Botany into the City Centre. It will provide connections to destinations not directly accessible from the Eastern train line, such as Ellerslie, Greenlane, Newmarket and

Auckland Hospital. The first bus in the morning will run earlier and the late bus later at night, while the all-day frequency will be increased. Transfers from other south-east bus routes will also be possible at Panmure. A newly-created route 55x will operate from Botany to Howick to the City Centre as an express service (via the motorway) during peak times. It’s designed in large part to service the universities at Symonds Street. Route 55 will change to an all-day frequent service from Howick to Panmure. Route 314 will be extended from Ormiston to Manukau via Murphy’s Road and Flat Bush School Road, no longer travelling to Mission Heights. But route 355 will be changed to include Mission

Heights, travelling to and from Ormiston. Public consultation showed that Bucklands Beach residents preferred their primary all-day connection to be to Panmure, not Botany. Consequently route 562 from Bucklands Beach to Panmure will be upgraded from a peak–only service to an all-day connecter service. Bucklands Beach passengers will then connect with the City Centre by bus or train with a single transfer at Panmure and will no longer be reliant on a transfer at Highland Park to route 55. It will travel via Macleans Road and Priestly Drive. The 566 route will be changed to travel via Prince Regent Drive to Half Moon Bay and hours of operation will be extended to meet every ferry.

He also carried off second prize in the acrylic section with’ Rangitoto Light’. “The standard of this year’s exhibition,” he says, “was really impressive. Every year it gets better.” The exhibition, which attracted 172 entries, was judged by painter Russell Hollings. Bus stop short-lived Residents at a Golflands housing complex were delighted to see a new bus stop and shelter go up on Ti Rakau Drive in front of their estate. He visited the Auckland Transport (AT) office in the Botany Town Centre to ask what was going on, only to be told that there were no immediate plans to bring the stop into use. The Times asked AT why the bus stop was not being used. A spokesman said: “We haven’t been able to open this bus stop. We have encountered some unforeseen issues with the safe operation of this bus stop at all times of the day. Until we can resolve these issues with the bus operator, we cannot bring this bus stop into use. But we are working on it.” Mr Pilgrim isn’t impressed, saying: “I would have thought that the ‘unforseen’ issues should have been forseen well before thousands of ratepayers’ dollars were wasted on the construction of the bus stop.”

p-and-coming footballer Arzan Todywalla is just 15 and is about to make his third trip to Europe in three years to play the game that he loves. Todywalla has been selected to represent New Zealand at the famed international youth football tournament Super Cup NI 2016 (formerly known as Milk Cup NI). Todywalla is just back from Palmerston North where he played in the under 16 squad at the NZF National Youth Futsal Championships. He was awarded golden boot in his age group, scoring 17 goals in six games.

The Hurricanes, Highlanders and Chiefs have the firepower to advance to the Super Rugby semi-finals but the Crusaders should struggle against the dangerous Lions in Johannesburg on Sunday, despite the return of Sam Whitelock and Andy Ellis. In Aaron Cruden, Damian McKenzie, James Lowe and Toni Pulu, they have sharp attackers who prosper best off Brad Wheeler’s snappy pass rather than the more laboured effort of Tawera Kerr-Barlow’s. Having struggled in their loss to the Hurricanes, the Crusaders will need to improve dramatically to beat the Lions who have thrived in their own den with an exciting brand of 15-man rugby. I don’t take too much on. I would rather achieve something and then move forward rather than rushing at it. I don’t want to be left with projects that have gone wrong.” However, his next aspiration is to eventually be an elected councillor.

Return bids for local board Current Howick Local Board chairman David Collings is standing again for the Howick Local Board under the Vision & Voice ticket. It’s his seventh local body election, having done one term on the Pakuranga Community Board, three as a Manukau City Council councillor and two with the Howick Local Board. “I’ve really enjoyed my time on the board and we’ve got a good team,” he says. “From a Pakuranga point of view, I’m pleased to work with Katrina [Bungard] and Garry [Boles]. He’ll do well on our team.” Over his 18 years of local government representation Mr Collings says the past term has been the most satisfying, especially seeing projects such as the Uxbridge arts and culture centre come to fruition and a start made on the Half Moon Bay ferry pier. In the new term, he

says, progressing AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative) will be a major challenge and “the planned new development at the Pakuranga Plaza will be exciting”. “Pakuranga will be transformed over the next 10-15 years. It’s been frustrating over the years with so many different owners. But now the longterm plans will put us on the map.” It’s Katrina Bungard’s second tilt at the board and she’s also looking forward to working towards the Plaza development and the AMETI project. “I’m particularly proud of our work in the community development portfolio,” she says. “We’ve just finished the first stage of the Healthy Howick initiative which has been a highlight for me. “We’ve also got the second ‘fruit trees in schools’ programme underway,” she says.

aving completed his first term on the Howick Local Board, Garry Boles intends to run again, but this time on his home patch in the Pakuranga subdivision where he has lived for 51 years. The police officer was successful in gaining a seat representing the Botany subdivision on the board last time. “I felt part of the area. I had been working here [Botany] in the police for eight years, was often out in the community and people knew me.” Since then his police role has changed and also, as a Bucklands Beach resident, he says it feels “more soulful to be running in my own patch”. There’s also a statistical reason for his switch. He’s one of the Vision & Voice ticket set up for the last election to gain a majority hold on the local board. This year well-known community leader Peter Young, who arrived in Botany from Hong Kong in 1998, is joining the Vision & Voice team for a tilt at a place on the board. A contemporary, Paul Young, is not standing in Botany. So the statistics point to wholesale Chinese community support for Peter Young which carries the danger that Mr Boles could be nudged out of a three-horse race. Meantime long-standing local body politician, Steve Udy, has announced that he will not stand again for his seat in the Pakuranga subdivision leaving a current space in the line-up for Mr Boles. “A lot of times people said to me ‘why don’t you run in your own area?’ and I struggled with that,” Mr Boles says. “But it’s nice to be going into battle in my own area. It’s a turf thing, a human trait to fight for it.” Joining the board was an eye opener, he says. While he represented Botany, he discovered that he was, in reality working for the entire ward. “Sometimes it was very complicated, such as where the money comes from. But all the board members were very supportive.

“Now I have done my first three years it’s like I have my university papers to be a local board member. I now have an understanding about how my influence can be used to get results.” If re-elected, he’s hoping to continue in the sport, recreation and leisure facilities portfolio. “We’ve spoken to 57 different sports codes out there,” he says. “We’ve identified big holes. A big one was gymnastics which doesn’t have its own building compared with other codes helped by the council in different ways. “My ambition is to see a sport gym established at Lloyd Elsmore Park which could accommodate other clubs.” He’s learned a lot about the

100km in 40 hour fundraiser A

n eight-strong group of local teens has completed a 100km walk inside 40 hours. The crew, which couldn’t take part in the 40 Hour Famine due to sporting commitments, began their walk around the Hunua Ranges at midnight on Friday and had to complete their 100km before 4pm on Sunday. They finished almost three hours early, clocking in with a time of 37 hours. Daniel Whitburn, a Year 12 student at Saint Kentigern College, said teachers at the school encourage active participation in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine. “Last year alone the school raised over $100,000 in support of Chigodi Primary School in Malawi, Africa,” he said. “Myself and eight more of my friends (all from St Kents) are all

Ted Collett began giving blood in 1967 when he was serving in the army. Forty nine years and 100 pints of blood later, the 70-year-old Burswood man is showing no signs of letting up. Collett donates blood around four times a year. “I give it because it helps people,” he said. “A good mate had leukaemia. They (NZ Blood) need the blood.” Collett spent 31 years at Air New Zealand in engineering maintenance where, conveniently, a bus would visit for blood donations. He reckons giving blood – he can do so until he’s 75 - is “good for your well-being” as would, surely, his very active lifestyle. He keeps healthy by exercise boxing as he calls it – fighting with gloves and pads starting at 6am – a lot of walking, cycling around 40km a week and bowls a couple of times a week at the Howick Bowling Club. Meanwhile, a coincidence saw Collett last week become a milestone 100th pint donor on the same day as Pukekohe man Bill Mellow. Mellow, who spent 24 years in Pakuranga, started donating

Judges said the entries were of a high standard and each participant was able to clearly express their depth of knowledge about their chosen subjects at the fair on July 7. Many judges reported their difficulty in deciding the top participants due to the high standard of presentation and oral knowledge. Wally Rice of Howick and Marilyn Bakker of Pakuranga commented re judging the 12-13 year old age group: “It was a difficult but enjoyable task to judge projects covering such a broad spectrum of historical topics. Each participant demonstrated a passion for their chosen topic which was well researched. It was clear that a great deal of hard work had gone into their oral and written presentations. “Overall, the standard was excellent and, yes, even the judges learnt something. Youths turn to givealittle The teen who lost his car and many of his possessions including Grandad’s ashes in a fire has turned to an online fund-raising website givealittle for help. Billie Wagner and his flatmates had not long been in the flat in Latham Avenue, Pakuranga. A garage fire gutted the garage and with it Wagner’s car – a MKI VW golf he’d been restoring for two years. It also claimed many items stored in there including his grandfather’s ashes. They had no contents or car insurance and want to replace what was lost in the fire and fund-raise to move to a new home. The cause of the July 7 fire is being investigated, although there is speculation it could have been faulty wiring. The blaze brought five fire appliances and a large number of police officers and media. Explosions during the fire – which the fire service put down to tyres popping – led many to believe a P lab was in the garage. Flat mate Caleb Kendall told the Times they had only moved into the property three months before. Feedback Calling on local dog owners

Re: Council proposal to prohibit dogs completely from the Mangemangeroa Reserve. I was most shocked to hear from a friend today that there is a proposal in council to ban dogs completely from the Mangemangeroa Reserve. Submissions closed on Sunday (July 17). How can the community respond fairly when we are kept in the dark? The proposals were not mentioned in the council dog registration pack. Other areas are listed as having access changes but Howick is missing, therefore few people would have looked at the website to see proposals. There are no signs posted on the walkway at any of the multiple entry points to inform users of this proposal although there are signs informing of other works and or changes. We live in the area, have a dog and walk here almost daily and had no knowledge of these proposals. Apparently there was an online survey, with 386 responses (very small sample). The 47 dog owners I have spoken to were not aware of any such survey, so I question the validity of the survey and the reference to “local” dog owners. I believe the council recently spent $38,000 on consultation about this walkway and $226,000 in total with the objective of making it “more accessible”. A “no dog policy” will alienate at least 36 per cent of the current users (according to council survey of current dog owners who responded). In 2014, the council spokesperson wanted to remove flaxes from the walkway - food for tui - and now they are concerned about the bird population. This walkway is “dog on lead” and, as such, presents no problem at all to the bird population. According to Department of Conversation cats, rats and possums pose a much greater threat to native birdlife. Maybe the council should lengthen the time for submissions - this would enable people to respond. The website where this can be found is shapeauckland.co.nz. Please submit so your voice can be heard. the sign when the walkway was upgraded. Earlier this year the council spent over $250,000 upgrading the walkway with the objective of increasing accessibility to the reserve. My observation is that 50 per cent of the regular walkers/runners of the reserve do so with their dog on a leash. This new policy, if passed, is instantly limiting the usability of the reserve and goes against the objective of the walkway upgrades. I am 100 per cent opposed to the prohibition of dogs using the reserve and request the council put me on their data base to keep me informed on this and other matters relating to the community I live in. We need clarification from council

Thursday, July 14 it came to my attention that the council is looking to prohibit dogs for the Mangemangeroa Reserve to protect the flora fauna and birdlife. The council states it has gained feedback from the community and employed a consultant. I live in one of the houses on the foreshore of the reserve and am a regular user of the reserve. I have not seen any notices posted in the area, been contacted directly or seen any survey being conducted. What methods did the council and consultant employ to engage with the community and 368 respondents to their survey? None of the regular walkers or members of the community I have contacted say they have any knowledge about this proposal or the survey. The council refers to the prohibition of dogs from the Mangemangeroa Reserve but all council signage in the area refers to the Mangemangeroa “Walkway”. Are they one and the same (as this is unclear) or will on-lead dog walking not be affected on the walkway? It is unclear what the objective of the council is? Is it to protect birdlife or prohibit dogs from the reserve? I am in favour of protecting New Zealand flora, fauna and birds but struggle to see how dogs on a lead can endanger or disturb the wildlife in the area. Which plants and birds are the council specifically looking to protect by prohibiting dogs? The council states it wants to prevent having to fine users of the area with dogs so are prohibiting dogs altogether. If the council wanted to prevent car users getting parking tickets, will they ban cars? The solution is simple clearly communicate the rules or times of the year dogs are prohibited from specific nesting area(s) to protect the likes of dotterels. Where do the dotterels nest? The area in question is extremely tidal and there is almost no exposed sand dunes (nesting sites) at high tide? Birds don’t nest all year so a complete prohibition of dogs from the whole reserve is over the top. There used to be a lovely sign with information about dotterels, dotterel migration and nesting but the council removed

hile June is generally a quieter month for the real estate market, the Eastern Beaches median price is holding at $1.1million on the May price and up 19 per cent on the same time last year, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures (REINZ). However dwelling numbers sold are down 12 per cent to 163 in June compared with 186 the same time last year. Median days to sell are static at 30. Demand has softened in some parts of the Auckland region, but there is still strong demand in the eastern suburbs and in the southern parts of the region, REINZ

spokesperson, Bryan Thomson says. “The lack of supply and continuing strong demand is driving prices higher,” he says. Although the onset of winter means that June is generally a quieter month, there has been no let-up in the rate of price increases across the country, Mr Thomson says. Five regions, Waikato/ Bay of Plenty, Central Otago Lakes and Northland have seen new prices reached while Auckland and Otago have reached record highs. “Although there is much discussion about the housing market and increasing new build supply, the fact

remains that the vast majority of the supply comes from the sale of existing properties,” Mr Thomson says. “The inventory data continues to show rapid declines in the volume of properties available for sale right across the country.” Harcourts chief executive, Chris Kennedy says it appears as though the traditional “winter slowdown” has returned to the Northern Region market. “It’s not something we’ve seen in the Northern Region over the past couple of years with the extremely heated market conditions we’ve been experiencing,” he says. “As the weather’s cooled

Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson says the moderate increases in average sales and median prices are a measure of an extremely tight supply situation. “At the same time it demonstrates that residential purchasers are maintaining a level head in terms of the value they see in the properties on offer. These are signs that vendors are similarly realistic, even in a constrained

market,” he says. Real Estate.co.nz chief executive Brendan Skipper says a turning point for Auckland may have been reached. “With prices now at an all-time high they’re almost out of reach for the average income earner, with first home buyers the hardest hit.” Buyers, he says are moving away from looking in the Auckland area in favour of other regions. “It appears Aucklanders still want to stay in relatively close proximity to our biggest city, but in terms of affordability they are forced to move even further afield, or they are

making lifestyle changes.”

MODULAR HOUSING Negotiations are underway to finalise lease arrangements for three sites in South Auckland ear-marked for future Government development in the next 10-25 years. Once the Auckland Unitary Plan is finalised, the Government will move quickly to lodge resource consents, with earthworks starting by December and the first tenants moving in by next autumn, says Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett. Most of the houses will be one or two bedrooms

and, if density rules permit, the sites could support between 100 and 140 houses. The properties will be tenanted with existing social housing tenants who need to be moved so redevelopment can occur, new social housing tenants and people in need of emergency housing. Mrs Bennett says the three sites will test the cost, speed of construction, availability and efficiency of modular building methods. “Once these are underway I would expect that the delivery of modular housing will speed up,” she says.

The New Zealand String Quartet will give its first concert in Howick next month since 2009 as part of its annual nationwide concert series. Titled ‘Heartland Classics’, the tour is about taking great music to intimate venues around the country. Local audiences will be able to enjoy the quartet’s performances in All Saints Church as part of the Thursdays @ Sevens series, curated by Katharine and Peter Watts. Mr Watts says past audiences have relished the quartet’s “superb musicianship and warm but informative

introductions to the works”. “We have a policy of admission by donation for our series so that no-one is excluded, something the church likes to give back to the community,” he says. “So we hope people will make the most of this opportunity to hear these fine musicians.” The programme in Howick features music by well-known Austrian composers Josef Haydn and Franz Schubert, along with the “American” quartet by 19th century Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. Fox is heading to Rio Local golfer Ryan Fox is heading to the Rio Olympics. The New Zealand Olympic Committee and New Zealand Golf this week named the 29-year-old Beachlands star in the New Zealand Olympic Team. Fox, son of All Black great Grant Fox, joins world number one Lydia Ko and world number 40 Danny Lee in New Zealand’s three-person Olympic golf team. “Obviously it’s a pinnacle sporting event and I can say I’m the third generation of my family to represent New Zealand in three different sports, so it’s a pretty cool thing to be able to do,” Fox said. This is the first time since St. Louis, Missouri in 1904 that golf is being played at the Olympics. Last week Fox moved ahead of fellow Kiwi pro Michael Hendry in the New Zealand rankings after he finished tied for fourth at the Slovakia Challenge on the European Challenge Tour. It was his second topfive finish on the European Challenge Tour in recent times and was enough to see him take the second Olympic spot behind Danny Lee. New Zealand Olympic Committee chief executive Kereyn Smith said she was thrilled to welcome the golfers

to the team. “It’s hugely exciting for Danny, Ryan and Lydia to be heading to the Rio Olympic Games. Not since 1904 has golf appeared on the Olympic programme and for New Zealand to have these three top athletes representing us is outstanding. “We wish these players all the very best in their final weeks of preparation and look forward to cheering them on in Rio.” New Zealand Golf chief executive Dean Murphy also congratulated the golfers. “This is a truly proud moment for New Zealand Golf and we believe these three athletes have a great chance in Rio and will represent the country with pride. “It has been an exciting few years for golf in this country and the Rio Olympics will be a special moment for the players and golf fans alike. We wish Lydia, Danny and Ryan the best of luck in Rio.” The Olympic Games start in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, next month.The men will start their Olympic campaign on August 11 and the women will tee off on August 17. New Zealand now has 198 athletes travelling to Rio.

Brothers off to baseball world cup T

wo Botany brothers are heading to the Under 15 Baseball World Cup in Japan this week. Tukuteihu and Huriwaka Repia, from the Howick Pakuranga Baseball Club, are part of the Kiwi side that will come up against Panama, Venezuela, the United States, Mexico and Chinese Taipei in Group B at the Under 15 Baseball World Cup in Iwaki, Japan. The tournament starts on July 29. Group A has hosts Japan, Korea, Cuba, Australia, Czech Republic and Colombia. Tukuteihu, 15, said he is looking forward to trying out new things in Japan, meeting new people and tasting different food. Huriwaka, 13, is also excited about experiencing Japanese culture. Both brothers say they are thankful to Baseball New Zealand and their family for the opportunity to take part in the tournament. They are learning fast under the guidance of former Japa-

nese international and professional pitcher Naoyuki Shimizu – the coach of the New Zealand Under 15 side. The team has been training at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga since the weekend and were joined yesterday by the Under 13 All-Star team. It was the last training camp for both sides before they leave for their respective tournaments overseas. The Under 15s leave tomorrow and the Under 13s on Saturday. The younger side will be playing in the 2016 Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Maryland in the United States and are being coached by three former professional players –

Randy Yard, Andrew Marck and former New York Mets pitcher DJ Carrasco. There are three local players in the side – Tui Amosa, Traye Wildbore and Taylor Irwin. These Howick Pakuranga Baseball Club members will come up against the likes of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Japan during the prestigious tournament, which forms part of the famous Babe Ruth League. Howick Pakuranga Baseball Club is the most represented club in the Under 13 team. Baseball New Zealand chief executive Ryan Flynn said this was probably the strongest group of young players, from the most diverse backgrounds, that they had ever pulled together for these two tournaments. “We have made a conscious effort to build our game and promote it as a sport for all people, to make it accessible, affordable and welcoming and these team rosters show we are heading in the right direction.”
