■■ROLY and Gail Runcinan showed their solar energy system at their Dannemora home to MP Gareth Hughes, the Green Party’s energy spokesman, who was promoting the Greens’ solar homes policy. The gridconnected solar PV (photovoltaic) system produced an average daily 14.8 kilowatt hours in February, but the Runcimans only used 9.9kW hours on average. ■■JP Singh and his business partner Kuljet Singh announced they would restore the burnt-out, historic Guy Homestead in Ti Rakau Drive and convert it into a childcare centre. They paid close to the $3.5 million asking price for the property and hopes were high that in 12-15 months children would enter the doors of the new Piccolo Park Family Learning Centre. ■■HOWICK College planned for a multimillion-dollar makeover to the college’s sporting facilities. Artist’s impressions were commissioned for the three-stage project, which would include a new gymnasium, field upgrades, covered artificial turf and an aquatic centre. ■■LINE producer Catherine Madigan left for Timor Leste on a 10month stint to help grow a young motion-picture and documentary company. She was appointed by Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) as a mentoring producer for the company in Dili, giving her the opportunity to combine an extensive background in large-scale motion-picture and television projects and her abiding interest in aid and development. ■■DANIEL Walker, the founder of Nvader, an organisation on a mission to free women and children from sex trafficking, was the guest speaker at a charity pop-up shop and fashion show at Elim Christian College, which collected $15,899 to support TEAR Fund’s money-raising programme for anti-trafficking work. ■■AFTER serving as Botany’s community cop for more than five years, constable Garry Boles started in his new position as Counties Manukau Police’s district crime prevention officer, working under Counties Manukau Police district commander, Superintendent John Tims. ■■PEOPLE with emerging theatrical talent were given the opportunity to showcase their work as part of the new Howick Little Theatre Studio aiming to encourage new and returning actors, new directors, writers and designers, to experience community theatre in an environment tailored to nurture budding talent. ■■EDUCATION Minister Hekia Parata visited Sancta Maria Catholic College, including a lengthy closed session with senior management, senior pupils and board of trustees’ reps, and meeting students from each year.

■■SAINT Kentigern College maintained its stranglehold on NZ schools tennis by defending both of the teams championships at a national tournament at Scarbro Tennis Centre. It was the fifth consecutive girls’ national title for the Pakuranga school and the third-straight victory for the boys’ team.
â– â– A 17-year-old motorcyclist died from serious injuries sustained when he was run over by an oncoming vehicle in Flat Bush. The teenager was travelling west along Stancombe Road when he swerved to avoid a Honda motor vehicle turning left out of Topland Drive. He fell from the Ducati motorbike and slid into the path of an oncoming Holden Colorado ute, dying at the scene from serious injuries to his upper body.

They visited nine schools to look at elearning, education spaces and curriculum, and how best they could be used at the college. ■■HOWICK author Dawn Grant’s original historical fiction novel, entitled Where the Flag Floats, earned a place alongside 11 other entries in the junior fiction category of the 2014 Storylines Notable Books List. ■■SOON-to-be retiring Health Minister Tony Ryall opened the new $190 million Counties Manukau Health Harley Gray building at Middlemore Hospital. He shared ribbon-cutting duties with Geraint Martin and Dr Lee Mathias, the Counties Manukau Health chief executive and chairwoman respectively; and Mrs Margaret Gray and Dr Harley Gray, who the new building was named after. ■■BEING content and taking things as they come was a life formula for Hazel Coward who turned 100. “I’m quite happy,� she said. “That’s probably why I’ve lived so long. I couldn’t care less; I just take things as they come.� But she didn’t attribute good health to healthy eating: “Oh no, I’ve eaten all kinds of rubbish.� ■■RESEARCH on the life of one of the soldiers named on the Stockade Hill war memorial cenotaph in Howick by Leo Abbott led him to Lenise Farrow, the soldier’s niece. The Howick RSA executive committee member was due to speak about Private Crawford’s military service at the 6am Anzac Day dawn service on Stockade Hill. ■■JOSHUA Cloke, an Elim Christian
College year 13 student, wrote about the mounted troops of the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade in Egypt during World War I. The image of the desert – barren, lonely – through which the mounted brigade struggled along was almost comedic as they stopped and lurched, stripped of all decorum – travelling atop lumbering camels. Yet, this image took a deserved place among those of New Zealanders at war, he wrote. ■■VETERAN broadcaster Bill Mudgway sheeted his start on the airwaves back to service in the Pacific during World War II, when he was in the Royal NZ Air Force participating in the Allied campaign on New Britain Island, New Guinea. It was there that his wrestling commentating career was born, but his radio commentary on the base was all fictitious. When Mr Mudgway returned to his home, the renowned wrestling commentator, Gordon Hutter, was told of the imaginary broadcasts. “He said, ‘be at the town hall at 8pm tonight’ and from there on all hell broke loose,� Mr Mudgway said. ■■HOWICK RSA president Mike Cole was delighted with the success of Anzac Day, saying the numbers of citizens who came out in large numbers at the dawn and civic service parades at Stockade Hill on Anzac Day were as big as any he had seen. ■■THE winner of TV One’s MasterChef NZ in 2011, Nadia Lim, was the headlining act for a fundraiser hoping to help cure diabetes. The event was organised by the Pakuranga Rotary Club, with proceeds going to the Spinal Cord Society. ■■WAKAARANGA School celebrated after winning an award in the Eye on Nature competition. The school’s clay totem poles took out the top prize in the primary school’s division of the contest’s sculpture section of the environmental education event hosted by the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust.

■■THE Howick Local Board agreed to fund a $24,000 industry pollution prevention programme for the Tamaki Estuary. It was being introduced in the wake of the 2013 State of the Environment Report Card, which rated the estuary an F – poor, and sheeted it back to industrial uses of the surrounding area.
■■EFFORTS to retain the Auckland Council-owned former police station property in Howick were given a reprieve when the council’s finance and performance committee agreed to defer the building’s disposal until the Howick Village Master Plan was finally complete. ■■THE owners of two motor vehicles stolen from the same street in the space of six minutes were among the victims of a spike in car thefts in East Auckland. The increase began earlier in the month, with Subaru and Mazda vehicles among those most commonly targeted. Suburbs affected included Dannemora, Pakuranga, Highland Park and Farm Cove.
■■SEVERAL firearms, a knife and a screwdriver were among weapons used during three robberies carried out at East Auckland bars. The Howick Local Board endorsed an Auckland Council submission to extend the temporary closure in the wake of a request by the Ngai Tai Umupuia Te Waka Totara Trust. â– â– YEAR 13 Saint Kentigern College pupil Arunabh Prakash was one of five students selected to represent NZ at the 26th World Schools Debating Championships in Thailand. â– â– AMONG those helping to entertain shoppers as part of the Howick Kiwiana event were the passionate volunteers of the popular Howick Village Radio (88.1FM). Financial support from the Howick Local Board and a community fundraising night in 2012 at The Good Home pub in Picton Street gave the radio station the funds needed to buy the caravan which allowed the station to broadcast from virtually any location. The best thing was the caravan allowed the team to broadcast in all weather conditions.

The Bucklands Beach Combined Probus Club also reacted with its feet by considering a shift from the council-owned Memorial Hall in Wharf Road to the Bucklands Beach Bowling Club.

■■ A LIQUOR store owner attacked during a violent robbery lost consciousness before coming to and phoning police on 111. The 28-yearold was the sole staff member on duty at the Ti Rakau Liquor shop in Pakuranga when a group of four male teenagers entered the business. When one of the teens picked up alcohol and tried to leave, he was stopped by the owner who was then attacked from behind by all four males.

■■LEGISLATION came into effect, lowering the amount of alcohol people aged 20 or older could consume before driving. The new limit fell from 400 micrograms (mcg) of alcohol per litre of breath to 250mcg. The blood alcohol limit fell from 80 milligrams (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood to 50mg. ■■THE Howick community went on jubilant display as 60 groups proudly marched in the Howick Santa Parade and led in Santa Claus to herald the beginning of the Christmas season. Moving the event to Sunday afternoon from Saturday morning was a resounding success. ■■PAKURANGA Vet Clinic owner Sasha Nowell got first-hand experience of the trauma caused when a beloved pet is attacked with a firearm. Through her work, she had attended to and operated on a number of cats and dogs that had been victims of shooting incidents, and witnessed the pain inflicted on the animals. But after her one-year-old Burmese cat Snowball was shot in the leg near the Nowell’s home in Botany, she personally related to the suffering their owners go through. ■■COUNTIES Manukau East Police established a burglary action team in an effort to make a dent in rising crime statistics. Burglaries increased by more than 50 per cent in October compared with the same period in 2013.

The display burst into life to coincide with the beginning of Advent, the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. ■■AFTER more than three decades of service, respected Counties Manukau East Police senior constable and youth education officer, Adele White, announced she would retire. However, she would continue her work as a marriage celebrant and as the Howick Local Board’s deputy-chair. ■■FOUR residents with properties on the shores of a Tamaki River inlet in Pakuranga, having battled with Auckland Council bureaucracy for four months, were relieved a fallen tree blocking part of the waterway would be removed. ■■AFTER a 19-hour stand-off, police fired tear gas into a man’s house at The Esplanade, Eastern Beach, forcing him to come out. The eight-yearold two-time BMX world champion was keen to become an ambassador for the sport. In 2013, she won the girls’ 5-7 class at the world championships in Auckland, and then took out the girls’ 8 category in The Netherlands. Along with her mum and dad, Anna and Dion.
