Delving into country’s past One of the nation’s funniest and most inquisitive men is putting out a casting call for extras for his new television show that’s to be filmed locally, reports CHRIS HARROWELL.

AST Auckland residents who have always dreamt of being on television may soon get their chance. Well-known Kiwi television personality and comedian Te Radar, real name Andrew Lumsden, will soon start shooting scenes at the Howick Historical Village for one of his upcoming TV shows. Filming is due to get under way at the popular community attraction in Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga, early next month. “The programme is called Te Radar’s Chequered Past and is about some of my favourite stories from New Zealand history,� the star told the Times. “We needed somewhere that could stand in for many different places and the Howick Historical Village fits that requirement.� Filming at the village will take about 10 days “on and off� between February and April. “Some days will be much bigger than others,� says the 43-year-old West Auckland resident. “We will be filming various scenes including some courtroom stuff at the village. “We are looking for a range of extras for the big crowd shots including people of all ages and both men and women.� Planned filming at Howick Historical Village will be just the second time Te Radar has worked in East Auckland. “We shot some scenes at a beach out here once,� he says. “I think I have relations going back to the Fencibles on my mother’s side of the family so I have a link to this part of the world.� Te Radar, who has a busy work schedule ahead of him this year, is concentrating on the next five months. “We aren’t filming the whole time, but we are filming quite big blocks. “Without a doubt this is the most elaborate production I’ve been involved with.� He says the new show is about “great New Zealanders who had a vision and gave things a go�. “For many of them it went very badly, so I hope that isn’t a premonition for how this production will go,� says Te Radar.

HERE are few crimes as callous and cold-hearted as ripping off a charity store or church centre. Sadly, however, that’s exactly the sort of incident Counties Manukau East and Howick Police are asked to deal with all too frequently. One organisation directly affected by such offending on more than one occasion is the Salvation Army’s East City Corps in Wellington Street, Howick. Senior pastor Mat Badger found only a pile of broken glass near where the church’s van had been parked when arriving at work one morning in April 2011. Whoever stole the 12-seat Toyota Hiace van also damaged the church’s other vehicle. The van was used to deliver food parcels to underprivileged families around East Auckland and for transporting youth to events. “We just don’t have time for this sort of thing,� said Mr Badger, at the time. “We’re trying to help people who really need it and then something like this happens.�

Whoever stole it dumped its contents on the ground before driving off with it. “We just want them to bring it back,� said Mr Badger. “The theft is immensely frustrating and it’s an additional cost we don’t need.� In August last year, thieves stole a 50-inch TV and a washing machine from the Salvation Army’s Rices Mall store. Howick Police constable Darrin Heaven summed up the community feeling toward those responsible: “Low life is the kindest word I can use to describe these people.� It’s sad that the people stealing from charity stores and church centres, should they be less well off than others, could be helped by the very organisations they’re

hurting. They may see them as soft targets as they’re largely staffed by volunteers and aren’t able to afford elaborate and expensive security systems. In a perfect world, any miscreant convicted in court of such a crime would be sentenced to undertake volunteer work for the organisation so negatively affected by their selďŹ sh actions. It would do them good to spend time packing food parcels for needy families or collecting items donated to charity by the public. That way they would hopefully learn something about the consequences of their actions and develop a semblance of a conscience. Those responsible for such crimes should hang their heads in shame.

Two Howick Village charity stores working to raise money for needy people and animals were broken into in September 2013. Targeted were the Salvation Army’s opportunity shop in Rices Mall and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) store in Cook Street. SPCA shop manager Tania Nader discovered broken glass on the ground and a large hole in the front door when arriving for work one morning. Taken were money from the store’s safe and donation box, petty cash from its till, a cellphone and jewellery. “The shop’s volunteers and customers are annoyed someone would steal from a charity,â€? said Ms Nader. “Our volunteers give up their time to come here and help animals. To break into a charity shop is pretty low.â€? The safe was also the target of criminals who broke a door to access the manager’s ofďŹ ce in the Salvation Army’s charity store in Rices Mall. Cause of blaze unknown

OLICE are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted a house in Pakuranga last Monday. The blaze broke out at the unoccupied two-storey brick and plaster Pakuranga Road property, near the Panmure Bridge, just before 4am. The blaze was doused by firefighters from the Mt Wellington station. It was contained to the single dwelling and no one was injured during the incident. The fire’s cause is being examined by Counties Manukau East Police’s criminal investigation branch and a Counties Manukau fire risk management officer. Police detective sergeant John Love says the damaged home’s owner lives in Australia. Its rental tenants were evicted from the property on December 12 last year. “It looks like people have been squatting at the house,” Mr Love told the Times. “Whether the fire was deliberately lit or someone just left behind a burning cigarette is yet to be determined. “That area is handy to Panmure. Kids are coming and going back and forth between Panmure and Pakuranga Plaza all the time, so it’s a well-worn path. “We would like to hear from anyone who saw people in or around this house in the early hours of last Monday morning.” A wooden deck on the home’s first floor is blackened from smoke damage. Several pieces of furniture, including two chairs, are visible in a room on the ground floor inside the property. The room’s contents appear to have been completely destroyed by the fire. A section of plastic guttering on the roof melted from the heat and is hanging down. Wooden beams in the ceiling are exposed from fire damage. Mr Love says what has been determined so far is that the fire

appears not to have been caused by an electrical fault at the property. He says the Counties Manukau fire safety officer will try to establish how the blaze broke out as police work to identify who was responsible. Police officers hope to track down the home’s former tenants and will speak to the dwelling’s neighbours to see if any of them saw something suspicious before the fire broke out. Holiday event takes off MORE than 1000 children are expected to descend on Mellons Bay Primary School for a carnival day of fun. Tomorrow’s event is being organised for the fourth year by the East Auckland SKIDS franchises and usually attracts about 400 children. SKIDS stands for Safe Kids in Daily Supervision, established in 1996, when a need for structured out-of-school care for primary school-aged children was recognised. More than 120 centres operate throughout the country. Six are in South-East Auckland, at Anchorage Park, Botany Downs, Bucklands Beach, Mellons Bay, Sancta Maria Catholic and Willowbank Primary Schools. Flying safety expert delivers important talk WORLD-renowned air show safety expert and veteran pilot Major General Des Barker is visiting New Zealand to share his knowledge with the aviation community. During a distinguished career in the South African Air Force that spanned four decades, Major General Barker, who is now retired, logged 7000 flying hours in 55 different military aircraft, and mostly jets. He’s the author of the 2003 book, Zero Error Margin, regarded as the safety manual

focus on the unique safety challenges posed by air shows and outline ways to improve safety for both aviators and spectators. He says there’s always room for improvement when it comes to aviation safety. “NZ’s aviation and display safety statistics are admirable, but as all aviators know, it’s important not to sit back on one’s laurels when it comes to safety.” He says there’s a vast matrix of things that could go wrong at an air show.
“It’s important that organisers understand these risks and plan carefully to mitigate them.” For pilots operating in the high workload regime of lowlevel display flying, safety is a continuous, “in your face” effort, he says. Mr Barker says meeting with the air show community in New Zealand provides an opportunity to benchmark procedures and share safety challenges. He makes his presentation at the Warbirds Clubrooms, Ardmore Aerodrome, tomorrow at 6pm.
AUCKLAND Council public libraries will be lively community hubs for the Lunar New Year next month, with a line-up of events planned to welcome the Year of the Ram. Locals will have a chance to celebrate at their neighbourhood libraries, with 88 events planned across the super-city. ONO Macfarlane has been known to guzzle olive oil or quickly down two large pizzas in order to stay in peak physical condition. The man mountain will be one of the stars in action during the Scottish Highland Games and strongman contests staged as part of next month’s Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo. The popular annual public event is organised by Howick councillor Sharon Stewart with assistance from the Lions Club of Howick. Sponsored by organisations and businesses including Times Newspapers, it’s staged from 10am on Sunday, February 22, at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. On show are military re-enactments, Scottish bagpipers and dancers, Celts and Norsemen, pipe and brass bands, music performances from Clan Celtica and The Smokin’ Bandits, craft and food stalls, a Mini car display, and more. Mr Macfarlane, 27, works as the assistant pastor at Howick Baptist Church in Wellington Street. He’s 1.95 metres tall and weighs in at a strapping 150 kilograms. The Howick resident has just earned $1200 by capturing his second consecutive Highland Games national title, staged in Waipu, Northland, on New Year’s Day. The contest on January 1, run by the Waipu Caledonian Society, features a range of individual tests of strength and technique. They include tossing the caber and throwing various heavy objects as far or as high as possible. “At a typical Highland Games competition you would do eight events in one day,” Mr Macfarlane told the Times. “We do the shotput, but use a large rock instead.

“We also do a hammer throw like in the track and field event, but ours has a wooden handle instead of a wire.” Mr Macfarlane won three of the eight individual events and finished second or third in the other five to capture the national title. “When I’m competing in Highland Games or strongman events in New Zealand my goal is always to win, but I’m also competing against myself,” he says. “If by my standards I put in a good performance and finish second, I know I did really well.” Mr Macfarlane is looking forward to competing at the Highland Games and strongman events at the Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo. He’ll have to throw an 80-kilogram stone for distance, walk with 100kg weights in each hand, and pick up five stones in a row that weigh from 101-155kg. To prepare for a competition, Mr Macfarlane consumes between 6000-7000 calories of food a day. “That’s when I’m really going hard and it’s at least double what a normal man would eat,” he says. “If I need some quick calories I might eat two deep-dish pizzas. “I used to drink olive oil as well as it has lots of calories and doesn’t fill you up.” People sometimes quiz Mr Macfarlane about why he takes part in competitions designed to test the limits of human strength. “Other people run marathons or climb mountains, but I think those things are crazy,” he says. “On the other hand, if you are able to pull a truck, why wouldn’t you?” The Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo gets under way at 10am on Sunday, February 22, at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Entry is free.
Road names depict past By MARIANNE KELLY NAMES for new roads created as part of the Ormiston Town Centre development have been approved. The Howick Local Board at its monthly meeting on December 8 approved 12 new road names and an extension to an existing road, Pencaitland Drive, for the development straddling Ormiston Road in Flat Bush. Developer Todd Property submitted the names, selected for their relationship with the history of the area. They are: Daubeny Road – the name of the previous owner of the land before the Ormiston family. Bellingham Road – Maria Bellingham was listed as one of the country’s oldest colonists. The Bellingham family bought their first farm in East Tamaki in 1860 and it remained in the family until the 1970s. Korukoru Road – Korukoru is the Maori word for a bloom on the scarlet-flowered beech mistletoe or a wild turkey. William Ralph Road – the Ralph family bought 80 acres on Ormiston Road in 1864 and the farm remained in the family until 1977. William Ralph was one of the first farmers of the area. Mahy Place – the surname of famous New Zealand book author Margaret Mahy. Hapori Lane – Hapori is the Maori word for a section of a kinship group, family, society and community. Whenua Road – Whenua is the Maori name for land. Mary Ann Road – Mrs Ormiston’s Christian name. Bonnette Road – the last name of the great-granddaughter of Mary Ann and Thomas Ormiston. Horo Road – Horo is the Maori word for hall. Kamana Street – Kamana is an Australasian-created grebe (diving water bird). Tia Road – Tia is the Maori name for deer because Thomas Ormiston Junior was a keen deer hunter.

UCKLAND is coming of age and its 175 years will be celebrated this Anniversary Weekend. A large-scale, never-seenbefore, immersive multimedia exhibition will be mounted by the Auckland Council and ASB Bank, giving super-city residents a glimpse into the past across the three days of the long weekend on January 24-26. The downtown Shed 10 and Queens Wharf will be transformed into the centrepiece which will be a tribute to Aucklanders who have played a significant part in the region’s history. The exhibition, produced by acclaimed creative director Mike Mizrahi, features stories told on screen about the people who have shaped Auckland and stories of Tamaki Makaurau will unfold in a live storytelling zone. Quay Street will be closed to traffic and, as people arrive on Queens Wharf, they will walk through an historic archway designed to mark the significant moment in the city’s history. Then the wharf, including Shed 10 and The Cloud, will come alive with entertainment and historical displays that will take people back in time. A highlight of the weekend will be a free concert from the HMNZS Otago this Sunday evening. The frigate will be berthed alongside Queens Wharf. Curated by Tama Waipara, a selection of Kiwi music acts will bring a local flavour to the city’s celebration. The concert will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display from barges in the harbour and from the Sky Tower. All three days will feature buskers, a waka display in the

he ownership of Howick Funeral Home has recently changed. Well known for empathy in dealing with grieving families and friends, the company will continue to make this their focus. Robert Johnstone and Mark Rowley have taken over from the previous proprietor Vern Warren. However, Vern will still be available on a consultancy basis to offer his expertise. Super year in sport at Shelly Park AT LAST month’s graduation and prize-giving ceremony, Shelly Park Primary bid farewell to a group of students who have been integral to maintaining the school’s sporting success. Last year, Shelly Park was named best overall school at the Howick Pakuranga Principals’ Association inter-school crosscountry for the 16th year in a
row. The school’s runners won four of the six individual races and four of the six team events. At the Eastern Zone athletics championships, Shelly Park teams won three of the four senior relay titles. In rugby, Shelly Park took out the under-50kg and under-35kg competitions to win the Jim Taylor Memorial Cup for the
fifth time in nine years. There were also solid results on the basketball court with Shelly Park coming runner-up in the Eastern A grade tournament and first, third and fourth in B grade. At the prize-giving, Zane Powell and Abby Lockhart were awarded the cups for excellence in sport.

LOSE to half the super-city’s street lights will change from golden yellow to white over the next five years. Auckland Transport (AT) has approved a plan to replace 44,000 high pressure sodium (golden yellow light) street lights with energy efficient emitting diodes (LED) luminaries. AT says it will be New Zealand’s most ambitious LED replacement programme to date. It owns and is responsible for more than 100,000 street lights, about a third of the country’s total lighting stock. The first phase, rolled out over five years, will see close to half the
region’s lights change, with estimated net savings of $32 million over the 20-year design-life of the LED luminaries. Phase one, which is due to start soon, will concentrate mainly on residential roads comprising about 60 per cent of Auckland’s street lighting network. AT has had a policy since 2012 that all new lights on pedestriandominated roads would be LED luminaries. It’s expected that the change will reduce energy consumption by more than 50 per cent. AT already has about 2000 energy efficient LED luminaries in service. A tele-management system
(TMS) will also be installed to operate and monitor the network. Better management of light levels achieves a further 15-20 per cent of energy savings, says AT. It will also provide enhanced customer service as any faults on the network will be reported daily. AT already has LED luminaries around Eden Park in Central Auckland controlled by a TMS system. It says international experience has shown that white light is a factor in crime prevention, delivers greater comfort and security, and improves visibility and reaction times for drivers and pedestrians, resulting in fewer vehicle crashes and injuries.

T’S reassuring to find that more than half the commercial food premises in the super-city’s south-east reach a high standard of compliance, according to the Auckland Council’s latest food regulation statistics. Since the council implemented the Food Safety Bylaw last year, covering inspection, staff training, conduct and maintenance of premises, and cleaning and sanitising, close to 100 per cent of businesses throughout the super-city have scored an A or B in the figures as at last December. Just over one-third (34 per cent) or 74 premises in the south-east score a B (good) compared with the 116 (53 per cent) businesses which reach A grade (high) standards. There is no C grade as all food premises are either above or below ‘average’ food safety standards. Just three per cent (six) businesses in the south-east grade D (poor) and one got an E (unsatisfactory) grade. Another 22 businesses have grades pending because they are new or have recently transferred ownership. Food premises with a high food grading pay less in registration fees than those with a low grading, providing an incentive for operators to improve their performance. The bylaw requires businesses to show a certificate with their grade conspicuously displayed at the premises principal entrance in full and unobscured view. Food premises failing to display their food grading certificate should be reported to the council. Complaints about the quality or service or the palatability or presentation of food are not handled by the council, but should be raised with the premises’ management. Complaints about food poisoning or hospitalisation caused by contamination should be reported to the ‘making a food complaint’ section of the Ministry for Primary Industries website. The council will deal with complaints about premises cleanliness, rubbish
dumped outside, food display or storage, food hygiene practices, foreign objects found in food, smells coming from a food premises, food safety issues, registration or grading certificates not on display. Some premises are not subject to the council’s food grading scheme, but still need to meet the standards set by the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974, and they may be inspected. They include RSAs, eating houses not open to the public, sports clubs not open to the public, sale of liquor premises that are not restaurants, boats, workplace cafeterias, schools, accommodation providers and other premises where the provision of food is secondary to the premises’ main purpose. There are more than 8520 licensed food premises in the super-city, including 762 new applications for licences last year. Mervyn Chetty, the council’s manager environmental health, says the number of food operators wanting to sell food at markets has increased. Three new night markets opened last year, bringing the total to nine operating in Auckland. Food trucks, he says, are also gaining in popularity. Apart from having to display grades, food operators also face major changes to food regulation for the first time in 30 years. The Food Act 2014, passed into law earlier last year, is designed to give food businesses the tools to manage food safety themselves, based on the level of risk associated with the kinds of food produced and in a way that suits their business. Under the national legislation, most food businesses will have to operate with a registered Food Control Plan. The new Act comes into effect in March next year. Tax debt collection on rise REVENUE Minister Todd McClay says the Inland Revenue (IR) focus on collecting tax debt has paid big dividends, with $752 million more being collected in 2013/14 than in the previous year. “The Government has invested heavily in providing IR with the resources to bolster its tax compliance activities. “In Budget 2014, we invested an additional $132m, which was on top of the nearly $200m already allocated through Budgets 2010 and 2012 for tax compliance and debt collection work. “This means that IR has additional resource and capacity to deal with more cases, and as such debt identification has increased,� says Mr
McClay. IR has focused on collecting newer debt, resulting in more than 565,000 cases being resolved during the year. Year-on-year tax debt is reducing in most regions, he says. “People with tax debt are more likely to pay if they are contacted before penalties and interest pile up. “And IR has a number of ways they can help people struggling with their debt, such as grace periods, instalment plans, and in some circumstances, remission or relief from penalties and interest. “I would encourage anyone with tax debt to pick up the phone and work with IR on a way forward, as our focus on debt collection will continue in 2015,� says Mr McClay.

JANUARY 19, 1995: Four happy former Macleans College students can breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the rest of their holiday after finding outstanding success in their bursary exam results. Weeks of anxious waiting has ended for last year’s college dux Darryn Appleton and his mates Richard Bolt, Linus Wu and Edward Hsiao. Darryn and Edward, with marks adding up to 453 and 457 respectively, received scholarships in their common subjects of biology, chemistry, maths with calculus, maths with statistics, and physics. Linus picked up two scholarships and Richard one. Darryn, Edward and Linus hope to study medicine at Auckland University this year, while Richard will study towards an engineering degree.
Rubbish idea
JANUARY 19: Manukau City Council is working on controversial plans to radically restructure rubbish collections from business areas. The council has decided to stop collecting rubbish from commercial and industrial ratepayers and cease charging them a compulsory $70 collection fee. It will collect their rubbish free of charge until about April, when businesses will have to make alternative arrangements. Transwaste, the rubbish company responsible for Howick, slams the decision as a virtual death sentence for small contractors, which “won’t be able to compete� against the bigger waste companies for the custom of the businesses. “We’re tiny compared to the likes of Waste Care and Waste Management, who will put a wonderful advertising package together,� says managing director Terry Lemon. “It’s going to make it that much harder for the little guy to survive.�
Howick Business Association chairman Brian Neben says it will be ridiculous if the new policy means three or more contractors end up picking up rubbish from one street. Residents that choose to use a noncouncil rubbish service, like a wheelie bin, will still have to pay the $70 fee. Council spokesman Ken Muir says it may sound unfair for residents, but “it’s a swings and roundabouts situation�. “Many businesses haven’t been using the council service for years because it isn’t available in their area or because they chose to use a different service.�

JANUARY 19: Young BMX riders Blake Gillard and Adam Coker will be looking for good performances in the Motorola Pagers Auckland BMX Championships. Blake from Beachlands and Adam of Highland Park will be riding in the seven and eight year old classes respectively. Both are in their second season of racing, having finished last summer ranked third in New Zealand in their age groups. Blake won the six year old title at both the North Island and Counties championships, but has now moved up to the seven year old class where he faces stronger competition from the top two ranked riders in the country. Last summer he finished third at the Auckland and national titles. Adam has had a quieter season, missing the North Islands, but winning the Counties title. A year ago, he was fourth at the Auckland champs. Howick’s Zane Randle will be looking to improve on the sixth place that gained him selection for the New Zealand Mighty 11s team to ride against Australia. The trio is just a couple of more than two dozen riders from the Glen Innes-based East City BMX Club who are expected to contest the Auckland champs.

TROLLING through Howick Village Market, sweet music ďŹ lls the air. And if you’re really keen – if the mood is right, the stars aligned – you could buy owers and wear them in your hair, like if you were going to San Francisco, such is the good vibe skipping through Howick on Saturday mornings. The tunes are a pleasant backdrop to the important business of buying and selling, yet one wonders whether the punters realise exactly how good some of these musicians and performers are. Stopping off to give a little busker money to Bill Perry last weekend was 12-year-old Keegan, of Somerville Intermediate School. Perry says Keegan always drops off change whenever he sees him playing. Enthusiastic Keegan is showing great afďŹ nity and respect for musicians at such a young age. He’s a good keen lad and eager to start learning to play the drums. He’s on a roll and will go far. There’s a constant stream of people passing and saying g’day to Perry before, after and during songs, and he politely takes time to acknowledge them all. He’s also played a set or two with Howick’s blues master Tony Painting, who he collabo-
rates with from time to time. Painting is known as one of Auckland’s leading blues guitarists and vocalists and takes his tribute show to the late great Texas yer Stevie Ray Vaughan on the road yearly. Perry’s life and musical journey led him and his family to Howick eight years ago. Born in London, he grew up listening to the musical generation of The Beatles and Rolling Stones and all those other fabulous British beat and pop bands of the 1960s, and had the great fortune to see groups such as Elvis Costello and the Attractions, (UK) Squeeze and even Dire Straits in English pubs, before they became major global entities. Perry’s odyssey has taken him on stints living in India, Germany and New York, and he’s had the opportunity to play with many great musicians and some big names. They include Gilson Lavis, the featured drummer in the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, and Squeeze, and Mark GrifďŹ ths, the bassist with The Shadows, to mention only a couple. But it’s in the songwriting department that the modest Perry is proliďŹ c. His catalogue listed at www.perrysongs.com is vast and based in the blues roots domain, and encompassing jazz,

Perry pays tribute to market co-ordinator Jenny Foster, the Howick Village Business Association’s town centre manager, who makes it possible for him to play amongst the stalls. But she knows a good thing when she hears one, and Perry is
such the versatile musician that he can play the right repertoire for any situation and crowd. THE Carter-Chan Dance Performance Centre, which celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year, has, fittingly, had its most successful year in the last 12 months. In 2014, the Botany-based dance studio expanded its teaching facilities to three large studios in a twobuilding complex. This has enabled the studio to offer more classes in a range of dance disciplines including Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, Contemporary, Tap, Musical Theatre, pre-school and adult classes. The studio also has a large number of students who are involved in competition work and in 2014 it produced two New Zealand Champions in the one year – a feat not many dance studios can claim to have achieved. RED Studio – the newest dance and modelling studio in East Auckland RED Studio opened its doors to dancers in July 2014. To begin, we specialised in Hip Hop and Jazz Funk, using the skills of top New Zealand dance instructors to choreograph and train our talented dancers. We created a positive learning environment with numbers growing quickly. Locals may have seen us performing at Midnight Madness in Howick on November 14, 2014. It goes without saying that RED Studio strives to provide high quality performance results – our love of dance is what drives us. Throughout 2015, we will be adding Body Conditioning classes, Catwalk and Modelling, Confidence and
Styling workshops, and Contemporary Dance classes to our portfolio of provision. We have teachers with global dance experience joining us from the Palace and IDentity, which is really exciting for all our students. One major opportunity that RED Studio will introduce is ‘boys-only’ classes. We have secured the services of a male dance teacher, who will work across the studio in particular with our boys to promote strong, confident male dancers. Our Hip Hop Competition troupes, newly formed in 2014, will be further developed throughout the year. These dancers practice hard and love every moment of the challenge.
Troupes are reviewed annually in June, so if you’re interested in competitions get yourself into a class, work hard and get noticed! Building confidence and self esteem in our youth through Confidence and Styling, Catwalk and Modelling skills and Dance is just the start of many exciting avenues RED Studio will explore by creating performance opportunities through fashion shows, dance competitions and public performances. T’S a crying shame Australian opener David Warner’s big mouth has overshadowed the feats of his booming bat in the current ODI cricket series against India and England. Fining the obnoxious Warner half his match fee for his repeated “speak English” comments to Indian batsman Rohit Sharma in Sunday’s second ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was the equivalent of giving him a slap over the wrist with a wet bus ticket. Long gone are the days when cricket was regarded as a gentleman’s game, thanks largely to the sledging which the Aussies have taken far beyond the realms of an art form. It has become boorish and does no credit to the perpetrators, some of whom have even gone so far as to
threaten to break an opponent’s arm. I empathise with NZ Herald cricket writer David Leggat’s condemnation of Warner when he wrote, “Remember in the aftermath of the death of Phillip Hughes all those noble words spilling forth with Australian accents about using that tragedy as a means to inspire a change in attitudes, to heighten respect for opponents without losing the competitive spirit”. “Great sound bites. Fat chance of succeeding. That resolve lasted three days in the first test at Adelaide when Warner, Shane Watson, Kohli and Sharma all teed off. There were frequent flare ups in the series.” Like Warner, New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum is also an exciting, belligerent batsman who scores runs quickly. The difference he is a

Geary ahead from go to whoa at Whitford Park JOSH Geary led from start to finish in winning the Volvik Whitford Park pro-am golf tournament last weekend. Geary, of Tauranga, shot 66 in the first round on Saturday to be five-under par, one shot ahead of Daniel Pearce and Jared Pender. YLAN Irwin and Elliot Johnstone are veterans of national age-group baseball teams, but have never represented their country in New Zealand. The pair, who play for the Howick Pakuranga Hawks club, are in the New Zealand 18-and-under (18U) team for the Oceania Championships starting tomorrow at McLeod Park, Te Atatu. New Zealand will take on Australia and Guam in the tournament, with the winner progressing to the 18U World Cup in Japan later this year. The chance to play in front of a home crowd has been a long time coming for Dylan and Elliot, or any New Zealand baseballer for that matter. Both have been to Australia for international competition, with Dylan also travelling to the Philippines and Elliot’s talents have taken him to Guam and Indonesia. The last time a Kiwi baseball side played in New Zealand, which ended a lengthy drought of international competition here, was in 2011 for the under-16 Oceania championships at Lloyd Elsmore Park. “It’s weird to think that this will be the first time I’ve ever played in my New Zealand jersey on home soil,� says Dylan, 17. Elliot, 16, says: “It’s a great honour to be a part of the team and play in front of my home country and family and friends. “It will be pretty cool, a special occasion, because it doesn’t happen very often.� With such a rare opportunity on the line, the boys were “stoked� to be named in the final 20-man squad fol-

Dylan has been selected primarily as a middle infielder, while Elliot will play as a relief pitcher. “It told me that all the hard work I’d put in had paid off, and I was being recognised for what I can do and that I’m good enough to make it,� says Dylan, who is in year 13 at
Botany Downs Secondary College. While the desire to play on a home field has been long-awaited, it will be a significant adjustment to their past experience, with New Zealand’s matches this Saturday being broadcast live on Sky Sport. “I don’t feel any more nerves at this stage, but when the first game comes they will probably kick in,�
says Elliot. “You just have to battle those and come out on top.� Dylan says: “When we are overseas, we are lucky to have a couple of the players’ parents come over to watch us, because the cost is huge. “For me, knowing I’ll be in front of family and friends and being televised in front of the whole country,
I feel I have a bit more pressure with all those people watching. “It feels different to know we’ll have all that support.� The teams will play each other three times at the Oceania champs, which run until Monday, with the winner decided by win-loss record. Admission to the tournament is free.
