N
EVER did I think I’d one day find myself helping to make a television show dressed in clothes that made me resemble a bearded humpty-dumpty. The rare opportunity came after interviewing one of New Zealand’s most popular storytellers for an article in the Times about his new TV series. Te Radar, real name Andrew Lumsden, was set to film scenes at Howick Historical Village for one of his future programmes. Due to hit TV screens next year, he describes Te Radar’s Chequered Past as being about “great New Zealanders who had a vision and gave things a go”. Following the interview, Te Radar emailed to say he wanted to cast me in the show as a younger version of the real-life Kiwi character James Macandrew. Macandrew served as superintendent, or leader of the provincial council, of Otago in the South Island in the 1800s and at one point was arrested for being in debt. Obviously a crafty fellow, he decreed his Dunedin home to be an official prison, so he could serve out his sentence within it. With that background in mind, I arrived early to film my scene last Tuesday. Meeting me at the entrance to the historical village in Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga, was Ruth Spencer, the TV programme’s researcher and co-writer. First order of the day was to physically get into character. I was placed in the hands of expert character designers Janis MacEwan, overseeing the wardrobe, and Tracey Sharman, in charge of make-up. My hair was given an 1800s-style parting and sealed in place with copious amounts of product and hairspray. Mascara was applied to my beard to remove all traces of grey hair and my eyebrows darkened.

Getting into the required costume was the next adventure. The first shirt I tried on declined to fit, and the black trousers were hoisted up underneath my armpits and held in place by a belt that felt ready to burst with one false move. After putting on a looser shirt and some more comfortable chequered trousers, held in place by colourful braces, I was ready for action. Soon after, the call arrived via walkie-talkie from the set that the crew was ready to shoot my scene. I met director Peter Bell, supervising first assistant director Natasha Romaniuk, and greeted the show’s star, the always chipper Te Radar. Standing in for Macandrew’s home on the set was the historical village’s Sergeant Barry’s Cottage. It didn’t take long for the crew to set up the lights, camera, and other gear, and we were ready to rehearse. My acting task was so simple that it would have been a struggle to mess it up. I started each take inside the cottage and when Natasha yelled “action”, I strode out and across a gravel path toward the property’s front fence. At the same time, Te Radar walked toward me from the left, delivering his dialogue to camera. We eventually met on different sides of the fence gate. I leaned over it, picked up a wooden sign that read ‘welcome’, and flipped it over to the other side, which said ‘jail’. Te Radar looked at me, I gave him a gentlemanly nod in return, and he kept walking to my right out of shot. And that was it. After about six takes, we got it right, and my job was done. It was a unique experience to see how actors and a TV filming crew work and an honour to be involved. But I couldn’t extricate myself from Macandrew’s antique outfit fast enough. ■ More photos page 5

ORLD-class British entertainer Ben Portsmouth is preparing to light up the Howick Club when he performs a tribute concert to the late, great Elvis Aaron Presley. Portsmouth unleashes a public music showcase entitled The King is Back at the venue in Botany Road on Thursday, March 5. It’s the same location at which he performed a sold-out concert in February last year. “I’m really looking forward to coming back to New Zealand,� says Portsmouth, who’s currently entertaining crowds in Las Vegas, United States. “I didn’t get much time to see the country last year as I had a very busy schedule, but what I

did see, I loved. “This time I get to see all of New Zealand.� Portsmouth will be supported on stage at his Howick Club show by legendary Kiwi musician Rodger Fox and his band. His musical journey as an Elvis Presley tribute artist began in 2005, when he formed the Taking Care of Elvis music band. His numerous performance accolades include taking out the prestigious international Porthcawl Elvis Festival, staged in Wales the following year. He later qualified to represent Europe at the final of the Images of the King stage contest, held in the US in 2010. Following his first visit to Presley’s Memphis home, Graceland, Portsmouth sang his way to

He says audience members at the Howick Club concert are welcome to sing along to all their favourite Elvis tunes. “I love crowd participation and to hear people sing along with me,� he says. “It’s amazing how many people of all ages know the words to Elvis’s songs. “That keeps me on my feet.� Portsmouth says he’s honoured to be able to pay tribute to the legendary entertainer known as The King. “There’s only ever been one Elvis Presley,� he says. “Speaking on behalf of myself and other Elvis tribute performers, we love to sing his songs and keep his memories alive.

ORMER kindergarten teacher Laraine Bennett, conscious of the need to provide environments conducive to mums and their littlies, has found a new home for a women’s group that will accommodate a crèche. She’s president of East Auckland Aglow, part of an international multi-denominational network that gathers monthly for meetings and prayer groups. Mrs Bennett says the group provides encouragement, support and friendship for women of all denominations. While the movement was started in New Zealand 40 years ago, the East Auckland group is just two-and-a-half years old and until now its members have met at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga. But the contemplative nature of the arts and boisterous worship do not always mix. And littlies running about the room can be a distraction for young mums looking to nurture their spiritual and their emotional development. Mrs Bennett decided a crèche was needed. A TELEVISION filming crew and actors and actresses descended on Howick Historical Village in Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga, last week to film scenes for one of Kiwi entertainer Te Radar’s future TV programmes. Te Radar’s Chequered Past delves into unique aspects of New Zealand’s history and examines some of the many colourful characters from the country’s past. A number of the historical village’s regular volunteers got into period costume to film scenes during the shoot, alongside Times readers who responded to a casting call for acting extras.

EGARDLESS of where the Black Caps finish in the world cup starting this Saturday, cricket in New Zealand will be a winner – excuse the clichÊ. Having the tournament cohosted by New Zealand and Australia will endear the game and our national side to a new generation of fans. Whether they attend a match or watch at the television-friendly times, hosting the world’s best players in our backyard along with the cream of NZ’s talent will generate a renewed fervour for cricket and its wonderful idiosyncrasies. Teams and codes attract fans in two ways. They can either win, which we all desire to be associated with, or by having been part of an amazing experience. Often the two go hand in hand, of which the All Blacks may be the best example. The team’s name, the haka and black jersey have attracted a fair swathe of supporters on top of those who fill with pride at the squad’s superlative win-loss record. But followers also attach themselves to teams or sports as the result of an agonisingly close loss (which explains a lot of the Warriors’ fan base), a charismatic personality, or a memory-burning performance. The heroes and feats of the 1992 Cricket World Cup cemented my addiction to leather and willow, despite New Zealand’s traumatising semi-final defeat. It was one split-second piece of action in particular, which remains one of my all-time favourite sporting moments. by New Zealander Chris Harris with a spectacular display of fielding prowess. Ian Healy played a shot off bowler Gavin Larsen to deep midwicket in the outfield. Harris swooped on the ball at pace and in one motion threw down the stumps from side on, with one wicket to aim at, stranding Boon just out of his crease. Such precision is common nowadays, with the professionalism of cricket increasing markedly since. But Harris’s deed was in the days before the likes of South Africa’s Jhonty Rhodes turned fielding into practised discipline, and left an extraordinary impression in the mind of this then budding fan, and
many others alike. That team, branded somewhat incongruously as the Young Guns, was also chock full of great characters: bandana-wearing Martin Crowe and his unorthodox foil Andrew Jones, the portly trio of Mark Greatbatch, Rod Latham and Ian Smith, aggressive paceman Danny Morrison and a curious opening bowler in spinner Dipak Patel. The current crop of players isn’t as entertaining off the pitch, with their constant deflection of individual praise to that of a team effort, star batsmen Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor being the main offenders. While there is a lack of mag-
netism amongst our lads, there is an abundance of villains in other teams to root against. The world No 1 ranked Australians feature the highest proportion of players to barrack, with David Warner, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson likely to irritate ad infinitum. Recent results suggest this is New Zealand’s best chance of obtaining the prized trophy, after making the semi-final in six previous tournaments. If they don’t go as far as many pundits are predicting, no doubt there will be remarkable innings or other achievements that create a fresh group of people obsessed with the gentleman’s game.
SPORTS BITES League hall of fame AUCKLAND Rugby League (ARL) is opening a Hall of Fame to honour its legendary players. Six players will become the inaugural inductees at a ceremony in April, coinciding with the official opening of the 2015 Appliance Shed Fox Memorial premiership.  The inductees will be selected by a panel of ARL stalwarts: ARL chief executive John Ackland, life member Ray Cranch, president Gary Whittle and broadcaster Allen McLaughlin. “The Hall of Fame is a way to recognise the contribution made to the game by a number of players over 106 years of rugby league in Auckland,� says Ackland. The Hall of Fame has detailed selection criteria, including the number of years playing club league in Auckland, the number of Fox Memorial finals played in and won, as well as games in Auckland representative sides. Taking part in victories over touring sides, leadership, as well as crowd appeal and character are also taken into consideration during selection meetings. It is envisaged that more players will be added on a biannual basis, with fans to get their say on future inductees.
Clark goes pro FORMER Botany Downs Secondary College pupil Mitch Clark has been signed to play professional rugby league in England. Clark, 21, will play for Doncaster in the RFL Championship, the tier below the UK Super League. Predominantly a front-rower, Clark was recruited from the Penrith Panthers, where he played in the under-20 team. Doncaster is owned and run by New Zealander Carl Hall, who played professionally with Clark’s father, Trevor Clark, at Bradford. Player-coach Paul Cooke says: “Mitch has a good engine, he is strong in the tackle with a lot of impact both in attack and defence.� Doncaster finished fourth in the 14-team league last year and start this season’s campaign against London Broncos this weekend.

F
OOTBALL goalkeeper Michael Woud has a welcome habit of making big saves in important matches. The 16-year-old from Pakuranga is a major reason New Zealand has qualified for the FIFA under-17 world cup in Chile later this year. Woud was picked as one of two keepers in the 20-man squad for the Oceania qualifying tournament held in Samoa last month. “Knowing all the hard work that I’d done, playing for your country is the ultimate reward,” he told the Times, of his selection. “I was proud to have the chance to represent the fern.” After featuring in three of NZ’s five pool matches, all victories, Woud was given the nod to play in the 5-1 semifinal win over Vanuatu, then line up in the final against Tahiti. “The semi-final was probably our best game,” he says. “We played our way, showed our class and worked as a team. “Going into the final, we knew it was going to be a tough game because they had French coaches and a few good players.” The score was 1-1 at the end of regulation time after Tahiti equalised with nine minutes to go, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. “As a goalkeeper, when it starts getting close to penalties you start thinking about it, knowing it’s going to be either your day or not. “You look at their strikers and think about which way they are going to go [with their spot kick].” Woud, who stands at an imposing

1.91 metres (six foot, three inches), relishes the intense pressure a penalty shootout presents. “You are in the spotlight, everyone is watching and it’s all up to you,” he says. “I like the one-on-one battles with the strikers. You get in their heads and try to make them go your way. “You can be jumping around, smash the cross bar and have your arms out wide. “They start realising the goal is a bit smaller. “If they’re not calm or change their mind at the last minute, they can
miss.” Woud’s tactics worked in Tahiti’s first attempt, as he judged correctly which corner the penalty taker was aiming for. “I knew one of them was going to go to the right, so I went that way. “When I saved it, especially because it was the first one, the momentum was with us.” His teammates went on to slot all of their kicks, putting New Zealand into the world cup and prompting wild celebrations. “It was pretty hectic. There were knee slides and running around,
jumping up and down, congratulating everyone and having a good time. “There was relief as well that we’d done it.” It wasn’t the first time a save by Woud has helped his team in a significant game to progress to bigger things. Last year, his Waitakere City FC team reached the Manchester United Premier Cup (formerly Nike Cup) in England following a phenomenal save by Woud in the Pacific finals across the Tasman. alty five minutes into the decider. Woud made a full-length dive to his right parrying the ball onto the post, then sprinted across the goal to gather the rebound, and Waitakere scored late in extra time to win 1-0. “Those are the two biggest saves I’ve made,” he says. “They led on to other things and bought up more opportunities. “I always believe in myself that I can do it. “Goalkeeping is 90 per cent confidence. If you go in confident, more often than not you’ll come out the victor.”
