t was a death defying moment. Talking from his bed at Auckland Hospital, Wayne Elmore was just out of surgery as he spoke about his nine-metre (30 ft) fall from the Fairy Dell waterfall in Kawau Island. “I was on a bush walk with my friend Alan Mitchell and his eight-year-old son Riley,” he said. “We were walking on top of a waterfall. I missed my footing and tried to grab onto a branch which gave way and propelled me backwards through a canopy of bush.” Wayne crashed and thumped his way down a two stage fall. He first fell around 5m, backwards onto a log which spun him around, hitting a solid rock ledge. He then plunged down another 6m into the water. Narrowly missing huge rocks, he landed backwards in waisthigh water. Mr Elmore, who has delivered the Howick and Pakuranga Times for the last four years, says he is very lucky to be alive. “My mate Alan came out to grab me and saw it was pretty bad. The gash was around 20cm-23cm long and he could see my skull.” Mr Elmore also broke a bone in his neck and crushed his rib. Mr Mitchell watched with

horror as his friend crashed and bumped his way down. He said: “The injury looked awful. A large flap of skin, which almost covered half the side of his head, was hanging and there was blood everywhere in the water. “I turned to my eight-yearold son, Riley, handed him my phone and told him to dial 111 and request emergency rescue from the Westpac helicopter. “I stood him in a safe place and proceeded down the steep rocks to the pool where Wayne was amazingly still standing. “I assessed his injury, tied a tourniquet round his head and assisted him out of the pool, where Riley was dealing with the 111 people,” says Mr Mitchell. Riley used his T-shirt to help stop the bleed. “The Kawau emergency response team arrived by jetski, and offered Wayne assistance, while Riley and I went out to direct the helicopter to its landing spot,” he narrates. Once the Westpac Rescue Helicopter team arrived, they prepped Mr Elmore for transport. Mr Elmore says that though he may not be able to deliver the Times for a while and has lost his cell phone in the water, he is deeply grateful to have had a narrow escape with death.

ir Edmund Hillary’s ongoing relationship with Macleans College had a profound impact on pupil Shaun Chang who was star-struck to see the great man walking through the school. Now his boyhood dream of following in Sir Ed’s footsteps is coming to fruition. He is an optometrist based in Sydney, Australia and heads up the Eyes4Everest charity. He’s taken two groups of his peers to Nepal to treat adults and children’s eye conditions and his aim to open the first eye clinic in the Sargamatha (Mt Everest) National Park is getting closer to being accomplished. Mr Chang moved from Taiwan to New Zealand when he was seven and learned about Sir Ed at Bucklands Beach Primary School. “I thought it was amazing that a bee-keeper from New Zealand could summit the tallest mountain on Earth,” he says. “New Zealand is a small country but has such a huge impact on the world stage. That inspired me to do the same with my life.” Most importantly, despite all his achievement Sir Ed was humble, friendly and very ‘real’, Mr Chang says. “He always regarded his greatest achievement as

improving the welfare of the Sherpa rather than the Everest summit. It is hard to find a celebrity like that these days.” Students at Macleans Hillary House have supported the Hillary family’s Himalayan Trust for more than 30 years with teachers and students frequently visiting Nepal. Sir Ed would talk to the seniors in assembly or at Hillary House. “Being neither of those, I never had the chance to listen to his talks, only those in documentaries and other television interviews,” Mr Chang says. “However, I did catch him leaving with a convoy at the amphitheatre and it is one of my best memories.” When Sir Ed died in January 2008 Mr Chang says he wrote what was in his heart at the Auckland

Museum and watched the coffin drive past. In 2013 he visited the hospital Sir Ed built for the Sherpa in Khunde and was told about the visual difficulties some children were experiencing.

“I felt some duty to carry out his legacy, especially as I was gifted with that skill. That was how Eyes4Everest started.” Mr Chang led a team of optometrists to the Himalayas in 2014 and again last October to earthquake ravaged Khunde, Khumjung, Phortse and Thame, the original Sherpa settlements where Sir Ed did all his work. He was accompanied by an old friend from Bucklands Beach Primary School and Macleans College, Nicole van Heerdon of the all-women filmmaking collective in Auckland called Waking Dream. Ms van Heerdon directed a 45-minute documentary with a brief to provide a unique perspective on a

mixing-pot of aid operating in Nepal and to follow the Eyes4Everest charity in its earliest stages of becoming established, discovering what it takes to walk in Sir Ed’s footsteps. Currently the footage shot on the journey is in the post-production stage. Meanwhile Mr Chang’s ambition to open a permanent eye clinic in Khumjung has been given a boost by a gift of land from guide Ang Tshering Sherpa. Currently the charity is working on raising an initial A$40,000 (NZ$43,000) needed to design and build it, with more funds eventually needed for ophthalmic instruments. Fight to retain heritage status

owick Residents and Ratepayers Association (HRRA) members are gearing up for a battle to get Howick Village retained as a ‘special historic character’ zone in the Auckland Unitary Plan. HRRA’s submission to the Independent Hearings Panel (IHP) is being heard today. Auckland Council’s latest recommendations are to relegate the village’s zoning to a ‘precinct’. Gayleen Mackereth who chairs the HRRA says this zoning may be covered by rules protecting the village. But they are only in place for three years. “I fear that once Howick is crossed off the list of ‘historic character’ areas, we will soon be forgotten and therefore upzoned further to THAB (terrace housing apartment building) zoning.” In its submission the HRRA applauds the heritage status allotted to buildings in the Howick Town Centre. But Mrs Mackereth says its members are exhausted by the continually changing sands of the council’s track changes and changing evidence. “We are tired and we are angry,” she says. “One minute we have Howick as a ‘special historic character’ area, next we are informed that ‘special historic character’ is to be deleted. ‘Historic character’ is the

Four old classrooms and a toilet block are being demolished; there is a line up of school desks and chairs ready to be discarded; heating is being installed in the school swimming pool and carpets in the reception area are being changed. A new boardroom adjoining the principal’s office has already been built and a fresh coat of paint adds to the inviting atmosphere. Principal Yolande Franke is a woman on a mission. The entire school is being redesigned and come July work will start on the Performing Arts block. “Once a district high school built in 1937 to serve the local Fencible community, it was officially converted to an intermediate school in 1966 and will soon celebrate its 50th anniversary, end of term three. However, they have a lot to celebrate considering the latest Education Review Report that gives them a big nod.

The school that had faced many setbacks with the roll falling and staffing problems since the long-serving principal retired, is now getting glowing reviews. The latest education report states that increased capability in governance, leadership and teaching together with strong systems and documentation has created a very good condition for continued development. It means that from being reviewed every term in the last year they will now be reviewed every three years. It’s a big feat for Ms Franke who took up the challenge of getting the community and the Ministry of Education involved in the school after she took over the hot seat of the principal in October 2014. It’s been an uphill task instilling confidence back into the school, teachers, parents, children and local organisations. She knew they’d come a full circle when the Education Review Officers spoke to the year 7 students who said they were proud to be a part of the school.

buzz word and the council wishes to obliterate any mention of ‘special character’ or local amenity – all of which are in the notified version of the Unitary Plan for Howick. HRRA was “delighted” when the IHP Commissioners came up with interim guidance that Howick should remain a ‘special character area’. “Not content with this advice the council then brought out the changes in a map showing ‘special character’ deleted for Howick Village (business area) and, from a limited area surveyed by the council, most of the pre 1944 buildings in the small area on the map were deleted except for some listed buildings,” Mrs Mackereth says. No survey was done of the larger area such as Bleakhouse Road and Sale Street where a lot of the original Fencible officers had their homes, a number of which are listed “Historic B” buildings now. Masefield, Abercrombie and Tanglewood Streets have listed dwellings, plus Ridge and Granger Road, which are all outside the limited area surveyed by council planners. In comparison with the full and creditable surveys done on other areas, HRRA believes the Howick survey was a disgrace. HRRA submitted its survey saying it wanted to be heard and was called to a meeting at the council with planners, supposedly ‘independent’ yet were part of the council team.

The evidence from these “independent” planners relegated Howick Village to a ‘precinct’ with a number of protections transferred from the original Manukau City Council documents. HRRA members were delighted that the original height map was re-instated. However, they were then to learn from the media that this ruling was changed in secret by the council and Howick was faced with buildings over 10 metres (three storeys high compared with the previous nine metre limit) on the most scenic ridge on the northern side of Howick, from Stockade Hill to Sale Street, ruining the magnificent views and streetscape. This move led Howick Ward councillor Dick Quax to storm out of the council’s final governing body meeting of last year when Mayor Len Brown dismissed requests to reconsider a notice of motion asking for full public consultation on behind-closed-doors decisions involving up-zoning Super City residential properties. Neither Mr Quax nor fellow Howick councillor Sharon Stewart were members of the council’s Unitary Plan Committee which proposed the upzoning. Mrs Mackereth says “it is then not surprising that we feel very suspicious of the idea of a ’precinct’ and believe it will not over time protect Howick Village from exploitation”.

There will be eight, sparkling 10 cent coins that will be hidden in dumplings served to family members at the stroke of midnight – when the Year of the Goat ends, and the Year of the Monkey begins. Those who find the coins hidden in their dumplings at the midnight dinner, where family and friends get together, are considered the lucky ones. “Somehow my wife and children got all the coins last year and I didn’t get a single one,” laughs Mr Li who makes it a point to follow tradition. Food is symbolically first offered to the ancestors as families get together to seek their blessings and remember them on the auspicious day. Every year, he starts preparing for the Chinese New Year well in advance, meticulously cutting paper for wall hangings, steaming buns and making little red packets with coins. He tucks them under his son and daughter’s pillows so that they can wake up to good fortune in the New Year. Rosa Chow, chairperson of Asian Council Reducing Crime Charitable Trust who is originally from Hong Kong admits she is too Kiwi to follow all the rituals that go with Chinese New Year.

She prefers to buy readymade, sweet glutinous red rice cakes from the local Chinese supermarkets that stock almost everything. Ms Chow says that while she could earlier differentiate people of Chinese descent from their country of origin, she now feels it is difficult to tell the difference. “They have all adapted themselves so much to the Kiwi culture, it’s getting hard to tell the difference these days,” she laughs. Rosa and her husband Thomas will join the Li family at their home in Highland Park to bring in the New Year on February 8.

n Environment Court decision of 2004 said that buildings of height and bulk which did not fit in with the low-rise nature of Howick Village should not be permitted. As far as members of the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association (HRRA) are concerned, that is the crux of the matter still today. They will argue this before the Auckland Unitary Plan Independent Hearings Panel (IHP) today. Gayleen Mackereth who chairs the HRRA says: “We know we are historic, we know we are unique and we want exceptional rules for Howick. We totally reject the ‘one size fits all’ approach of the Unitary Plan.” If the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan (PAUP) and planners’ new definitions of historic character do not fit the dispersed nature of Howick’s historic landmarks and visually notable buildings and stunning vistas, then a separate category with ‘special character’ status, as outlined in the PAUP, with different definitions for Howick must be written. The notified PAUP shows Howick Village and immediate surrounds covered by a ‘special character’ business overlay. The overlay includes height restrictions to preserve the village lowrise character and a number of other heritage protections, mainly transferred from the Manukau City Council Heritage Plans. Currently, however, a secret Auckland Council ruling has changed the scenario to buildings over 10 metres (three storeys high compared with the previous nine metre limit) on the most scenic ridge on the northern side of Howick, from Stockade Hill to Sale

Howick, as the oldest settled European village in Auckland, deserves a special status, the HRRA submission says. “The most important thing about Howick is that it is different from almost all other areas retaining their ‘historic character’ status. It is the actual history of the area and the listed Historic A and B buildings and the recognised historic status which is ingrained in the history of the Howick area and marked by reenactments and events in the Village and by the type of businesses building on this status. “We believe that the sight line from the spire of old Selwyn Church must regulate all other height limits in the village to retain a cohesive streetscape. Clearly then incongruous “Blokhaus” style buildings and apartments must not be permitted to grow and overshadow or dominate and must not be visible in the context of the Howick Village. “Unbelievably, foolishly, the council proposes numerous multi-storey apartment buildings obstructing the amazing and extensive views from Howick Village and Stockade Hill. This new proposal must be stopped. Howick people will not stand for this. Apartments cannot be built on the seaward side of the village. “How can any planner plan to deliberately obstruct our views by more and larger apartment blocks on this sea side of the village the whole length of Howick from Stockade Hill till way past where the view is now blocked by the Selwyn apartments opposite Selwyn Church?”

Green Gables Art Gallery the Military Tattoo Association and with lots of support from the Howick Local Board, this year’s event will be a great community activity,” says Brian Stocking, of Howick Lions. “With a strong Scottish influence along with the military flavour, Highland Games (including the caber toss) organised by Nigel Edwards will be included in the line-up. We will also have the Eno Sisters (with their renditions of war-time hits), marching girls, a Fire Power demonstration using authentic weapons, and a host of other displays. The kids particularly love getting on the field for the paper sword fights. We also have the talented All Star Cheerleaders putting on a display.”

Along with the usual rides and a bouncy castle for the little ones, there will be craft stalls and others set up by local community groups. Special undercover seating will be provided for the elderly. Admission is FREE and while there will be a variety of food on sale, families can bring their own picnic lunches to enjoy. The Pakuranga Rugby Club will again be supporting the event and their bar will be open for food and drinks. Funds raised by the event will be ploughed back into the local community through the annual awards and sponsorships donated by the Lions Club of Howick Charitable Trust.

I am constantly amazed at the incredible adventures to exotic places East Aucklanders visit. I meet people travelling to remote destinations all over the world who return with unforgettable tales and awesome photos. Part of the preparation for adventures to Asia, Africa, South and Central America, as well as some Pacific Island destinations, should include good travel health advice. It is very useful to have a sound understanding of the destination, type of holiday you are planning and your underlying health status. A trip to a hotel in Bangkok is completely different to a prolonged backpacking adventure to rural South East Asia for many weeks and requires different types of preparation. Vaccinations, malaria risk, altitude issues, gastrointestinal issues and a travel health kit should all be considered and documented at a travel health consultation. Some vaccinations require a course of vaccines so it is wise to allow at least one month before departure to check what is recommended. Traveller’s diarrhoea is the most common complaint for remote travellers. Having a good action plan can make a real difference to your trip. Dengue fever is on the increase in many countries. Applying a good insect repellent is the best way to prevent this. The biggest cause of fatalities amongst travellers is motor vehicle accidents, the risk being reduced by good decision making about seat belts, road crossing and using only authorised public transport. Do consider a travel health consult before your next adventure – it could make for a safer, healthier trip.

Where are the savings?

Re Rodney Hide, Auckland Council. Rodney Hide makes it clear he has no respect for Prince Charles. He suggests Charles is a tree-hugging eccentric who, in all probability, will become the next ‘mad monarch’. But wait. Is this the same Rodney Hide who gave us the Auckland Council? I, along with my neighbours, have seen our rates increase 10 per cent, 10 per cent, 10 per cent (a cumulative increase of 33.1 per cent) over the last three years. So where are the promised “increased savings due to economies of scale” and the “greatly reduced staff numbers”? Those who have been independent, worked, saved, invested for a reasonably comfortable old age, continue to be penalised for it. Is this the same Rodney Hide who gave us the Maori Statutory Board? I thought the Auckland Council was a democratically elected body representing all Aucklanders regardless of race, colour or religion. It seems to contain a fair sprinkling of all beliefs and ethnic groups – black, white, red, green and yellow. So why do we also have the MSB – a self-appointed, self-indulgent, group of bigots supporting one privileged minority group? It seems the Rodney Hide legacy is on a par with his dancing – fumbling, stumbling and uncoordinated. Keith Beagley Dannemora

I was not impressed with the front page story on the demise of The Beach House Restaurant. It appears much of the content was hearsay and rather personal and had little to do with the restaurant. Ian George’s letter (Feedback, January 28) poses the age-old question, ‘Is it better to obey God or man?’ Those who choose not to believe in God please themselves. ‘Fair enough,’ you might say? What about when it is harmful to others? Aren’t you glad your mother did not abort you in order to indulge herself? It is not called murder because men carefully define the law differently. Homosexuality is a barren lifestyle (it does not reproduce life). It often leads to disease and death, but that’s OK. The law says so. From the beginning, God has allowed us to choose, but not without giving us clear warning of the consequences and of the impending judgment for those who continue to disobey him. He told us what the signs would be of the approach of that judgment. Those signs are clearly in evidence now. If you choose to ignore the warnings, fair enough, but I know that no one would make such a terrible choice if they really understood the consequences they would face. Jesus Christ paid the price

Freedom of expression is one of the hallmarks of a democracy. Peaceful dissension is part and parcel of this freedom of expression which reveals both sides of an issue. When open discussion is gagged by media, lobby groups and the government, we, the public, are the losers. When propaganda is instigated by the government as a way of influencing public opinion instead of reflecting public opinion, it is even more dangerous. We should be alarmed and condemn the spin doctors even if they come from the Prime Minister’s office. That sort of thing leads directly to devising outcomes by legislation. It is only a small step from democracy to tyrants. Being politically correct does nothing for our freedom of expression, either which are under attack daily. otany MP Jami-Lee Ross was one of just five National MPs who voted for the current New Zealand flag in a straw poll taken by the New Zealand Herald last Friday. The alternative Kyle Lockwood Silver Fern flag got the backing of 41 per cent of all MPs. The Times asked Mr Ross whether, given his youth, his stance was surprising. He says he is “relatively ambivalent about it all”. “I will embrace the Kyle Lockwood Silver Fern if that is what New Zealanders collectively choose,” he says. “However, I am struggling to get excited about it as an alternative. It is a big deal to change a country’s flag. I would only

vote to do so if I really felt inspired by the alternative option.” The National Caucus, Mr Ross says, agreed to pass legislation to set up the referendum process, but that MPs were entitled to vote in the referendum according to their own view, just as every other voter could. “Young people probably don’t feel as tied to the existing flag as much as older generations,” he says. “However I have faith in young and old to be able to make an informed

decision about what each flag means to them. “There’s no need to be concerned that a flag change would lead to a reconsideration of New Zealand as a constitutional monarchy. “In fact John Key is a staunch monarchist and also believes strongly in changing the flag. Growing up in a three-generation household, and helping care for a grandmother with early dementia, sparked Bonnie Robinson’s (CEO at HBH Senior Living) interest in services for older people. “Back then dementia was rarely mentioned and there were few support services. appy new year to the Times and its readers and I wish you all the very best for an enjoyable and prosperous 2016. It’s an exciting year ahead and it has already had a busy start. I have just been in China for a week on an informative trip learning about the dynamic business environment in Guangzhou and Shanghai. As well as talking with New Zealand officials there, I had the opportunity to meet with people and leaders of the Evergrande Group, one of China’s largest companies, that has interests in many fields including real estate and food production. Evergrande has partnered with another strong company, GMP Dairy, based in East Tamaki. GMP’s core business is the production of the high quality, safe and secure NZmade infant formula for the export market. It was a fascinating trip that provided great insight into how some of the business leaders of our second-largest trading nation think and operate. New Zealand and our products are well regarded in China and there are many opportunities on the horizon for our local manufacturers and exporters. No taxpayer funding was used

Meanwhile, this week sees the signing of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), with the respective ministers of all the 12 nations in NZ to sign the agreement. The recently released TPP National Interest Analysis reports that entering the trade agreement is in the national interest. It’s forecast that our GDP will grow by $2.7 billion by 2030 because of TPP, with tariff savings of $259 million a year once the TPP is fully

implemented. Before TPP takes effect however, it will be scrutinised thoroughly through the Parliamentary processes. This will involve hearings being held by the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee that I am a member of. There has also been good news for solving our transport problems in Auckland with the Government’s commitment to speed up the process for constructing the East-West Connection road project. We have also signalled that we’re working closely with the Auckland Council to bring forward the commencement date of building the City Rail Link. It’s going to be a busy and exciting year ahead. Bard’s yard theatre season One of the biggest festivals of Shakespeare ever staged in the southern hemisphere is coming to the Super City involving the world’s first full-scale working replica of the second Globe Theatre, Shakespeare’s Theatre. Marking the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death, the theatre will pop up in the heart of Auckland Central, host a season of the bard’s masterworks and then disappear again. It will be hosted by Pop-up Globe which has taken over a council-owned piece of land at 38 Greys Avenue, next to the Aotea Centre. Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night will launch the season on from February 19 and 20. They will be followed by Much Ado About Nothing, February 21 only, Henry V from February 28, The Tempest from March 3, Titus from March 13 and Antony and Cleopatra from March 28. The season will close with Hamlet at 1pm and 7pm on April 11 only. Locals tackle 100km trail

Four rounds in one day

group of four brave Howickians have dared to take on a 100km walk in Whakatane to raise funds to fight poverty overseas. It was Chris Clark, a trained nurse, who registered the team ‘Clarkie’s Crew’ for the 2016 Oxfam Trailwalker before telling her husband Peter Clark and her friends Susan and Stuart Mudford that they were doing it with her. Susan said it was “an offer we couldn’t refuse.” The team completed this challenge back in 2008 in Taupo as ‘Muddie’s Mob’ in just under 25 hours. With each individual having their own strengths, Peter being a former topranked NZ Touch Rugby referee, Stuart having experience with tramping and navigation, and Susan with a background in endurance sport, they hope to complete the walk in 20-24 hours. The journey is broken up into seven stages with the longest being 16km and the shortest being 12km. The team are preparing as much as they can before stepping onto an unfamiliar track in Whakatane. “During the next eight

weeks we will be doing about 80km to 105km each week over mixed terrain, with long walks at the weekends and night walks. “It means walking six or seven days each week,” Susan says. Getting through the ‘witching hour’ from 2am to 4am, Susan says, is the

hardest as fatigue sets in and there is greater risk of hypothermia and hallucinations. “It can get quite tough out there when we all start getting tired. “So we will have to have some strategies for the hard bits,” she says. Ensuring they have enough water, clothing, and safety

equipment is paramount to avoid getting blisters, cold and dehydrated and to avoid some of the incidents that happened in 2008. “Last time some of the team got bad blisters and suffered from extreme cold on one leg...I fell asleep about 3.30am whilst I was walking through the bush,” Susan says. The Oxfam Trailwalker is a team challenge with the option to tackle 100km in 36 hours or 50km in 18 hours to raise funds to fight poverty. Over the years, the event has raised more than $160 million internationally for Oxfam’s life-saving work. Susan says she was hooked into doing it after learning that the life expectancy in Malawi is 52, the same age as herself. “There are no old people in Malawi. This was my main motivation for doing Oxfam this year. Canadian golf instructor Julian Dobko took on his annual challenge of playing 72 holes in one day at the Howick Golf Club last week to raise awareness for mental health. The 29-year-old, who started playing golf at the age of nine, played his first 72 holes in June 2014 in Iceland at the Kidjaberg Golf course. “I was only planning on this being a one time thing, however, many people encouraged me to make it an annual event,” Dobko said. A year later he was teeing up in Anchorage, Alaska for another day of 72 holes. This year Dobko played his 72 holes alongside a friend Jake Riordan at the Howick Golf Club, starting as soon as it was light around 6.10am. After 13 hours, a couple of short breaks to eat and cool down, the pair finished their final round at 7pm. Dobko was sponsored for the number of birdies, eagles and number of kilometres walked and he says the money is still coming in following their efforts. The final statistics of Dobko’s game were 41 pars, 8 birdies, 1 eagle and 41 kilometres walked. Next year, he is planning to play in Norway. Ting takes 11th MMA victory Auckland MMA fighter Ev Ting took out Eric Kelly with a third-round guillotine choke in the One Championship 38 Clash of Heroes headliner on Friday at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Malaysian-born lightweight pushed Kelly to concede defeat 1m58s into round three, ending his run of three consecutive victories. At 26 years old, this is Ting’s 11th win, having fought in New Zealand and internationally. Ting grew up in Auckland playing soccer at school before joining Auckland MMA in Pakuranga in 2009 and going on to win multiple MMA and kickboxing fights including taking the Supremacy featherweight title. He studied sports and recreation at AUT and is a qualified personal trainer and runs his own business, Swishfit, out of Auckland MMA and a gym in Greenlane.

ne has to query the wisdom of those who advocate the changing of our God Defend New Zealand national anthem when you consider the miraculous Wellington Sevens wins of our national team against South Africa over the weekend. Sunday’s 24-21 final triumph was even more astonishing than Saturday’s after the All Blacks stormed home after trailing an outstanding South African side 21-7. If there has ever been a more exciting come-from-behind win in Sevens history, I cannot recall it. The shining light of Sir Gordon Tietjens’ new look team was undoubtedly dynamic forward Akira Ioane (pictured) who scored five tries over the two days and set up others to win man of the tournament honours. With father Eddie a 1991 Samoan World Cup international and mother Sandra Wihongi a former Black Fern, Akira and his 18-yearold brother Rieko have excellent pedigree. Akira showed he was the complete package when he sprinted back to save a

pion Counties team, halfback Pulu proved his worth with a strong all-round performance although Gillies Kaka proved a better attacker when he replaced him in the final. Having had so little time together, Tietjens’ new squad needs time to adjust to become the lethal cohesive combination he will need to strike Olympic gold in Rio. In truth, some of the passing in Wellington was poor and far inferior to that of the pacy South Africans who also got more numbers and lower body positions to the breakdowns. Still there was more cause for optimism than pessimism, especially on a weekend in which the Black Caps sealed a ODI cricket series win against Pakistan at Eden Park with just two balls to spare. They were lucky to secure that after an umpire’s error allowed Corey Anderson to escape being given out caught behind before he hit a couple of sixes.
