Just over 20 years ago a group of enthusiastic musicians came together to form an orchestra. Now, two of the Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s founders, manager Terry Spragg, and 86-year-old first violinist Ellen Skinner, are taking a step back to sit in the audience. Mrs Spragg chaired the MSO when it was formed, as well as playing the viola in the first concert along with Mrs Skinner who led the second violin section. Mrs Spragg says from its beginnings with 22 members the orchestra continued to grow, to more than 100 at times and its current 85. “We began with performances at the Papatoetoe Town Hall and All Saints Church, Howick.” When the Vodafone (then TelstraClear Pacific) Events Centre opened in 2005 the MSO found a new home and presented the event centre’s

first performance in the Genesis Energy Theatre. It was a new era having the events centre roomy stage and the back-up of the technical and front-of-house staff. “To have a real cultural venue, that was huge,” she says. Support from the southeastern community was and remains large, she says, particularly as new retirement villages are established and their residents are encouraged to attend the concerts. Mrs Spragg is handing the reins over to Bernadette Murphy who manages the MSO from its Te Tuhi Pakuranga office. She is keen to build sponsorship opportunities and the current donor base to increase the orchestra’s sense of independence. “We will honour the ground we have got from Terry’s hard work,” Ms Murphy says. “We need to treasure the people who are coming to our concerts. But I also want to explore social media to engage with youth.

university student who spent his childhood years using the London Underground rail system is campaigning for a new South-East Auckland light rail line and he’s caught the ear of Auckland Mayor Len Brown and his transport advisers. Nick Meyer, 18, of Botany Downs, will meet with Mr Brown on February 12 having already run his ideas past Rory Palmer, the council’s senior adviser for mayoral initiatives. “The last major line constructed in Auckland was the North Auckland Line in 1868, which was completed in 1925,” Mr Meyer says. “So I am proposing an East Auckland Line. We’re paying the same rates and the buses are good, but they only get you so far. All we are doing is adding buses to crowded roads.” Towards the end of last year the Times reported that Auckland Transport (AT) would start discussions in February/March on an AT proposal to build light rail replacing buses on the central city isthmus with more than the 110 bus limit already reached on Symonds Street and Dominion Road. Mr Pirrett says thanks to the system, Counties Manukau Police have arrested offenders who have committed crimes elsewhere. “We’ve arrested offenders who have been operating from Manukau right down to Hamilton. [The ANPR vehicles] are worth their weight in gold.” At the same time, the former Counties Manukau Police intelligence manager reminds the public to take pro-active measures to protect their property. “The good majority of offences that affect a homeowner include breaking into cars, stealing things from around the property and from sheds like shoes and gardening tools. “If people put them inside and lock them up then offenders will soon realise there are no easy options.” It’s important to remain vigilant, Mr Pirrett says. “I would ask if anyone sees anything suspicious to report it whether it’s people in the neighbourhood who they think shouldn’t be walking around at that time of that night, a car lurking around, dog barking or an alarm goes off.” People shouldn’t think they are wasting the police’s time, he says. “We’d rather get there and find there’s nothing rather than go in the next day and deal with a victim and an offence we could’ve prevented.”

There was great sense of revelry and gaiety as the Pakuranga Chinese Association had around 150 members along with prominent people from the community - including philanthropic businessman Steven Wong, Sharon Young from Counties Manukau Sport and Vera Xu vice chairman of the China Peaceful Reunification Association—raise a toast to the Year of the Monkey at the Lucky Seafood Restaurant in Meadowland Drive. Old traditional folk songs belted out with gusto, ancient instruments brought out for the special occasion, a display of tai chi in traditional robes and graceful folk dances accompanied by loud cheering from spectators, set the jubilant tone of the afternoon. President of the association Barry Huang was in true form as he wished everyone good fortune and happiness for the New Year. Mr Huang also conducted a quiz with an interesting twist by recreating a scenario of a Chinese marketplace with a fisherman selling crabs. There was much laughter as the scene was

enacted by sporting participants which resulted in a fun maths riddle. Packed to the gills, the 12-seater round tables at the restaurant heaved with the choicest dishes that included a variety of meats, seafood, vegetables and the blue cod fish that is considered very auspicious. Truly a feast for the kings. “In the good old days, the farmers couldn’t afford to buy pork, chicken or fish but during New Year they used to cook plenty of meats for the special occasion. It signified abundance in the year that follows,” explained Ms Chow, a business tutor. “They cooked large portions with lots of leftovers, with the hope that some of the wealth would spill into the next year,” she said before stepping on to the stage to regale the New Year revellers with a popular Maori song. There were plenty of prizes given away that included large Ming vases, calligraphy frames, USB sticks and boxes of chocolates. The glorious afternoon ended with the God of Wealth arriving in a traditional costume. Within seconds he was surrounded by groups of women who didn’t want to leave his side. The auspicious moment was captured on camera for the Times readers.

Cat rescue ends with unexpected surgery

Being lazy has a rich pay-off sometimes. Ask Aryaman Taore, former head boy of Botany Downs Secondary College. The strong desire to have a burger soon turned into an epiphany. Four months later, Aryaman found a solution for all those Kiwis who want something desperately but are too lazy or busy to go out and get it. The LazyAz app that Aryaman worked on allows you to order almost anything and have it delivered at your doorstep in less than an hour. The service was launched in the CBD area on February 8 with plans of it coming to Manukau soon. Aryaman attributes the success of creating the app to his peers who have helped test it. His friends will also be part of the LazyAz delivery team. “Though the service costs $7 for delivering any product, for the initial weeks this will be reduced to $3,” he says. Aryaman has already got interested parties willing to invest $20,000 in the business. He is hoping more venture capitalists would be willing to put money into the business for it to expand to the entire country and later to Australia. t’s the height of the stray kitten season. But one lucky little moggie remains blissfully unaware of the complications its rescue has caused a busy professional woman. When it comes to animals in need, the Times advertising manager Selina Chant is one of the first to put a hand out. But the hand came to grief when the kitten retaliated during its rescue resulting in surgery for Miss Chant and up to six weeks before she gets full flexibility back to her right thumb. Miss Chant spied the kitten on her neighbour’s property on January 20 and, realising it was too young to be in the open by itself, decided to catch it. She cornered it under the deck but before she could grab it, the kitten sank its teeth into her thumb. “I decided if I could get it by the scruff of its neck it would settle. But when I did that, it bit deep into my thumb. As I jerked my hand away the kitten came with me. But we still didn’t catch it.” By now the thumb was

stinging like a burn and Miss Chant ran it under a cold tap for five minutes and cleaned the wound. She thought the kitten had disappeared which was true, except that it was hiding under the engine housing of her car and then escaped under the bumper of a second parked car. “We jacked the car up and had to take off part of the bumper. We pulled the kitten out and put it in a cage overnight,” Miss

Chant says. The following day it was off to the SPCA where she found that the kitten was only five weeks old and had cat flu. It was treated for the flu, will be de-sexed when it is old enough and prepped to go up for adoption. “This kitten had a strong survival instinct and didn’t want to be caught,” Miss Chant says. By the time she returned to the Times she couldn’t bend her thumb. She was put on strong antibiotics at an A&E centre and told to come back the next day as she might need hospital and surgery. “I thought they were joking,” she says. She ended up in the hand surgery ward at Middlemore Hospital where her thumb was eventually operated on. Now she is on ACC, working limited hours and unable to drive her car until February 19. “It’s extremely challenging. I can’t write, it’s a challenge to do simple things like brush my teeth, you don’t realise what you take for granted.” She was surprised to learn while in hospital that infection from cat

bites is extremely common and that cat, dog and even human bites are extremely dangerous. Now she is off to hand therapy because there is still no movement in her thumb and recovery is expected to take four-to-six weeks. “The kitten will be fine, she says. “It will find a forever home. My road to recovery is much more complicated. “I would be more apprehensive next time and grab a pair of garden gloves first, but it won’t stop me.” While walking back to her car from the AustraliaNew Zealand one-day cricket match at Eden Park last week Miss Chant came across a roaming dog which fortunately had its address on its collar. She picked it up and she and her companion drove it home. “Had I learned a lesson? No. When it comes to animals in need it won’t stop me.” ■■ The SPCA’s Mangere animal village is annually flooded with litters of unwanted kittens over summer. Tree man leaves us By Marianne Kelly

man who fought bureaucracy for as long as he could to have a tree on his neighbour’s property cut down has died in his 80s. Henk Van der Vliet, who became affectionately known as the tree man, died on February 3 in the South Island where he had moved to live with his family. The gum tree in Willow Way, Pakuranga cost him more than $20,000 repairing damage to his drains, roof, ceiling and carpet over 10 years, not to mention the cost to his health. He became a major supporter of Howick Ward councillor Sharon Stewart who helped him negotiate the path between bureaucrats and lawyers. While the tree remains protected, Mr Van Der Vliet had the last laugh last November when high winds brought down a substantial branch over the owner’s driveway. After he sold his property next door and moved to the South Island, he worked with Mrs Stewart on the phone to help the new tree owners in their current efforts to get the tree removed.

But, Mrs Stewart says, most people living in Howick, Pakuranga and Botany will remember him not just for the tree,

but helping her collect money for the Red Cross for two weeks solidly. “Without Henk’s determination the collection that was organised, using the collection cans donated by the Howick and Pakuranga Times, would not have raised more than $21,000 for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in The Philippines. “The biggest thanks goes to Henk who was our star collector and always wanted to do more.” Mr Van der Vliet and his family in the Netherlands, she says, were all heroes and played a part in the Dutch Resistance in World War II, doing the extremely dangerous job of hiding shot down pilots. Mr Van der Vliet came to New Zealand in the 1950s, married and settled down, having four daughters. He loved making toys for children. Most of the furniture in the Zena television series was his work. “He was a master builder, a good friend and a loving father and grandfather,” Mrs Stewart says. “We will all miss you – goodbye Henk.”

Writer’s insights shared By Marianne Kelly One of New Zealand’s most prolific playwrights and screenwriters is coming to Howick to discuss his justin eade career. Nelson-based Justin Eade will be the special guest at Howick Little Theatre (HLT) a week before the theatre company presents the Auckland premiere of his hit comedy Central Otago Man. The play was shortlisted in the Playmarket Adam New Play Competition in 2014 and was staged at the inaugural Nelson Fringe Festival last year. Directed by Alex Gleed, it will open in Howick on February 27. Along with six full-length stage plays, Mr Eade has written 18 feature length film scripts. In 2011 he was flown to Los Angeles by the organisers of the Movieguide Awards where he received the $25,000 grand prize in the Kairos Prize Screenplay Competition for his script Blue Water Metal. The play was read around top Hollywood executives and currently a Los Angeles-based producing partnership is showing strong interest in it. Mr Eade will discuss his career and answer questions at HLT’s ‘An Evening with Justin Eade’. ■■ The event takes place at 7-9pm on February 20 at Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga. “With our youth musicians we find that their friends come along so we are building a younger base.” The age of the youngest MSO musician is 13 and Mrs Skinner, at 86, the oldest. She says she will attend all the concerts in her retirement and wants to come to the rehearsal for Haydn’s Clock Symphony scheduled for the March 12 concert. “I played it in 1948 when I was in the Junior Symphony [now the Auckland Youth Orchestra],” she says. Mrs Skinner, who lives at the Pakuranga Park Retirement Village, was approached by MSO music director Uwe Grodd to lead the MSO second violin section. Because of family commitments, she moved back to first violin ranks where she remained until her retirement last year’. “Playing in a large orchestra is very fulfilling, it envelopes you. When I’m finished playing, if someone was to immediately speak to me I would cry. In the audience I will still sit and cry. It will be difficult.”

espite numerous threats to its existence, the spirit of a longestablished choir lives to see another day under a new name and new environment. After 44 years in existence, the Pakuranga Madrigal Choir (originally the Pakuranga College Evening Class Madrigal Choir) is now based at the All Saints Church in Howick and continues to show resilience in the face of adversity. In 1969, Pakuranga College’s former head of music, Neil Guyan, established the school’s madrigal choir for those who enjoyed choral pursuits and became prolific, winning many awards. However, after leaving school, some of the students who belonged to the choir craved the opportunity to sing again. As a result, the Pakuranga College Evening Class Madrigal Choir was established in 1972. For 40 years it flourished under the umbrella of the Pakuranga College Community Education Department, performing at retirement villages, churches, Elizabethan banquets re-enacted by schools, Howick Historical Village and various other key venues. Several years ago, Pakuranga College abandoned community education and Edgewater College

came to the rescue. Last year, the community education programme at Edgewater College received cuts to government funding and could not sustain the group any longer. “So we met to discuss the inevitable closure. Would we close down for good or keep singing?” says Neil. The decision was unanimous, he says. “Then the All Saints Church which has always been supportive of our public recitals offered us its facilities.” Past highlights of the 25-strong ladies’ choir include performing for leading production company Silo Theatre at Q Theatre in the Auckland CBD. If you like singing madrigals, motets, carols, folk songs and spirituals in a chamber-sized choir, this could be the choir for you. She’ll deliver a collection of new compositions, the body of work that forms her new and fourth studio album Shot of Gold, which she has just been presenting to American crowds in shows supporting Australian master guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, who she’s toured and collaborated with many times in recent years. “Shot of Gold is an album of real stories and experiences in my life – songs of struggle, joy, love, loss and healing,” says Bristow. “I was living in Austin, Texas, when I wrote this album and was inspired by southern blues and country roots music and the people I met in that great live music scene.

otany MP Jami-Lee Ross has been taking a closer look at business opportunities for New Zealand in China. He spent a week on a “fascinating and educational” business trip to China - its second-largest trading partner - discussing business opportunities for New Zealand, with a particular focus on food safety, dairy exports and primary products. Mr Ross was the guest of East Tamaki-based company GMP Dairy that is partnered with one of China’s largest companies Evergrande Group, which has interests and operations in many different fields including real estate, agri-husbandry and dairy products. Formed 20 years ago in Guangzhou by businessman Xu Jiayin, Evergrande Group has steadily grown to be China’s largest private sector real estate development company. Mr Ross was accompanied on the China trip by fellow National MP Stuart Smith, the deputy chairman of Parliament’s Primary Production Select Committee, who Mr Ross says has “a wealth of knowledge and experience” in the primary products sector. “It was a very successful trip and it showed me there are plenty of opportunities for our NZ businesses and enterprises to export to and have closer commercial relationships with China and its businesses,” says Mr Ross.

During the busy week of meetings and tours in major cities Shanghai and Guangzhou, he and Mr Smith spoke at business conferences on the subjects of food safety and infant formula. He says it was a “golden opportunity” to reassure Chinese business representatives and food safety experts of New Zealand’s high standards and rules pertaining to food production, safety and security. GMP Dairy’s core business is to export premium quality pharmaceutical grade milk powder. “It is apparent that Chinese consumers are very positive when it comes to them rating New Zealand products. It was great to be able to support New Zealand and local exporters in my electorate,” says Mr Ross. As well as meeting leaders and key players of Evergrande Group, Mr Ross and Mr Smith met with officials of the Chi-

nese state-owned company Guangdong Salt. Mr Ross says both enterprises have extensive distribution networks that reach far and wide across China. It is market reach that would be of benefit for NZ businesses wanting to get comprehensive access to as many Chinese consumers as possible. “The Chinese do business differently and it was fascinating to see. There are opportunities for NZ companies because there is a huge demand for clean and safe products. “There are also investment opportunities here for New Zealand companies to benefit from. Companies such as Evergrande are actively looking for more partners in a range of industries to work with. The historic free trade agreement between New Zealand and China was signed in 2008. Mr Ross’ visit to China did not involve taxpayer funding.

he Blues won over a legion of fans in the pre-season hit out against the Melbourne Rebels at Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s Bell Park. The final scoreline, 59-7, was icing for sure but tempered by the fact the Rebels were some 15 players under strength. Still, it was a positive start to the career of new Blues coach and former All Black statesman Tana Umaga. It was the perfect setting for his 33-strong squad to clear the carburettors and bust out their moves (five of the boys didn’t play due to niggles). Last Thursday’s match was split into four 20 minute quarters in which Umaga was able to put the boys through their paces. The fans loved it. It was endearing too to have All Blacks Jerome Kaino, Steven Luatua, Patrick Tuipulotu, George Moala and Rene Ranger right there. Within touching distance. The crowd – estimated to be around 4500 – loved it. The energy from the sidelines was magic. It was the biggest crowd at Bell Park since 7000 rocked up to see the All Blacks in training in 2011. And afterwards the players and their illustrious new coach hung about for selfies and signatures, satiating the thirst of all the kids and grown-ups wanting a little more of their Blues. here’s water, water everywhere, and all are invited to share as the second Tamaki River Festival launches in Farm Cove this weekend. The Saturday event at the Bramley Drive Reserve set against the backdrop of the Tamaki River is funded by the Howick Local Board and is staged on February 13, 10am-4pm with a rain date set for February 14. The family-friendly event offers free activities and entertainment including sailing and kayaking, water safety education as well as music, food and community stalls. Community and recreational organisations such as Pakuranga Sailing Club, Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Coastguard Howick, Young Mariners and Sea Scouts will have a strong presence, offering waterbased experiences and other

activities. The public will have a chance to check out a Westpac Rescue Helicopter flight simulator and emergency services will be present as well. Celebrating the iconic river and its natural environment, the community festival creates awareness around the coastal environment amongst a hive of activity. The lively atmosphere is boosted by a range of performances scheduled throughout the day including Chinese and folk dancing as well as music by the Howick Brass Band. Children are in for a treat with the Manic Pirate Show, H20 Magic Show, Zorb Water Walkers, bouncy castles, an appearance by Harold the Giraffe, beach games as well face painting. Environmental organisations such as Wai Care will be educating the public on the importance of clean and healthy waterways, and fish-

eries officers will be on hand to explain fishing rules. There will be plenty of food stalls but groups can also choose to pack a picnic. A truck providing drinking water will be stationed on site. Howick Local Board deputy chair Adele White says the response was very positive last year despite Cyclone Pam hitting the country. “That’s why we had no hesitation in running it again. The weather forecast this time is looking good so we’re very excited. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone there. It’s a free family day.” Ms White reminds attendees to bring along their togs and prepare for an active day. “One of the things people can do is park well away from the site and take advantage of the wonderful Pakuranga Rotary walkway and have a healthy day out.” ■■ The free Tamaki River

Feedback Trolley trouble

I was wheeling an empty trolley into the Pak’nSave in Botany when an elderly man’s trolley came slamming into the back of my leg. He was walking behind me and it’s a very narrow entrance. He was answering his mobile phone I suppose and was in a rush so he didn’t notice me and just said ‘oh sorry’. But since then I’ve had to go to the A&E, get crutches and see the doctors who initially said it was a ruptured Achilles. When they did the scan they found that it was extreme bruising and swelling instead. I’ve had to be in a plaster for several days. It’s cost me megabucks although ACC is covering some of it, as well as several visits to the doctors. My family have had to look after me and bring me meals and other things. ot in her wildest dreams did radio presenter and dance teacher Natasha Bali imagine that she would be in front of the camera instead of choreographing a dance sequence behind it. When the Botany resident, who runs an Indian classical and Bollywood dance studio called Farishtah School of Dance, first heard from a friend that director Shridhar Kallidai was looking for a choreographer for a dance sequence, she approached him for a job. Natasha was taken in by surprise when the director of Unlimited Tamasha asked her to audition for a role. “I was a little worried that having been brought up in New Zealand, my Hindi accent was a little Angli-

cised,” says the doe-eyed actress. However, the fact that she’d been a radio presenter with a local Indian radio station came to her rescue. “Radio helped me to have confidence in acting,” says the talented young lady with a graduate degree in psychology. The director was very impressed with her dialogue delivery and signed her up for the comedy-actiondrama that had a couple of parallel lead roles on offer. The film, which was shot mainly at Sonaisali Island Resort in Nadi and in New Zealand, had a grand premier in Fiji on January 27. Though Natasha couldn’t make it for the red carpet at Event Cinemas in Fiji, she is excited that the film, with a star cast from New Zea-

land, Fiji and India, will be released soon in Australia and New Zealand. Enthused by their debut in the glamour industry, while some of her co-stars from the film Unlimited Tamasha have moved on to the mega dream factory in Bollywood, India, Ms Bali prefers to be more grounded. She is back to her day job as a licensed real estate agent with Howick and

Super City residents’ positive view of the region’s economic outlook remains undented, according to the latest Westpac McDermott Miller Regional Economic Confidence survey. A net 21 per cent of households believe the region’s economic fortunes will improve over the coming year, up from a net 13 per cent in September. This continues a long run of positivity seen in Auckland that started in December 2012. Westpac industry economist David Norman says strong house price growth has fuelled a

significant wealth effect in Auckland over the last couple of years. “Retail sales were up about eight per cent in the September quarter, for instance,” he says. “While house price growth has now slowed, we’re still seeing a lot of positive signs in the region. “Residential construction is booming and scope for a lot more growth exists,” he says. “Several new commercial developments are planned downtown and job advertisements remain strong. Auckland, as an urban centre, has been more insulated from the

commodity price weakness seen elsewhere in New Zealand.” Separately, the Westpac McDermott Miller survey also examines consumer confidence, producing an index that summarises responses to questions including how respondents view their own financial situation and their current willingness to buy a major household item. The regional breakdown of the consumer confidence index shows Auckland consumer confidence remains above the national average, up 2.5 points to 113.6 in December, compared with

Hunting out illegal operators A

new R.A.C. (report-a-cowboy) app has been released for download to the public by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. It’s designed to quickly and effectively deal with unauthorised work within the construction industry. The app allows industry tradespeople and consumers to submit photo and video evidence, such as illegal work sites and false advertising on vans. It also has the ability to log GPS coordinates and allows those reporting through the app to

request confidentiality. The board can receive about 40 complaints from tradespeople and consumers a month and where there have been instances of the proper channels of complaint not being completed adequately, making the investigation and prosecution process difficult. Martin Sawyers, the board’s chief executive says the app is a significant change to its lengthy complaint process of the past where a significant amount of form filling was required. The only requirement now

in the complaint process is to pass on information to the PDG Board’s investigation team by using the new on-the-spot app technology. The R.A.C. app effectively allows every licensed tradesperson and the consumer to become the eyes and ears of the board. The information gathered will allow the board to identify and target its resources of problem areas and will help squeeze out illegal operators throughout New Zealand quickly. “Unauthorised work is, how-

ever, a problem that can’t be solved simply by prosecuting more people,” Mr Sawyer says. “We also need to make consumers more aware of the risks involved in hiring unauthorised people. “It is important to know that work undertaken by unlicensed people not only risks your family’s health and safety, but may also invalidate insurance. “Homeowners should take every precaution when engaging with service providers by asking to see an authorisation card

– tradespeople are required to produce it.” Sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are regulated industries in New Zealand and it is illegal to do this restricted work unless authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

With the start of the school year in full swing, deciding what sports to enrol your children in might be on your mind. Although this may seem like a simple task, there are a few factors to take into account when deciding what sports they will play. â€¢ Think about their interests Just because you enjoyed playing a certain sport when you were a child does not mean your child will enjoy playing it too. Children who arenâ€™t interested in a sport wonâ€™t gain any benefit from it and it could

even make them unhappy, frustrated or angry. If your children say that nothing interests them â€“ which can happen â€“ why not get them to try out some free introductory classes, or go to different practices with them. Giving them more options might be an easier way to find a sport they love. Signing them up for a few different sports gives them a chance to try them out and find the one they enjoy the most. â€¢ Schedule and budget Obviously some sports require investments of time and

money; sometimes the expenses can be quite substantial. If you have a tight schedule reconsider enrolling your children on a team that travels long distances to tournaments on a regular basis. And if you donâ€™t have much money to spare for this type of activity, focus on sports offered by your childrenâ€™s school or by local clubs. Signing your child up for a school or club sports team is also a great way for them to make friends, especially if they are just starting school or are entering a new school.

The dedicated team has seen success over the last few years, progressing into the premier league and playing against teams much older and more experienced than themselves. This inspired the club to call on ANZ Dream Big to encourage them to keep striving to be the best. ANZ Dream Big introduced the team to some

Black Caps tie kangaroo down Agnew’s Angle

f you are a Kiwi there is nothing more satisfying in sport than tying the Aussie kangaroo down, especially in cricket in which they are the world ODI champions. In completing a 2-1 series win at Hamilton’s Seddon Park on Monday, the Black Caps gave retiring captain Brendon McCullum the perfect ODI send-off which he would love to cap with a win in the two-test series against the old foe, starting Friday. While he can fluctuate from exhilarating to exasperating as a batsman, the ultra-aggressive McCullum’s attacking attitude has led his country out of the wilderness to being a major international force during his captaincy tenure. A shame that his aching body won’t allow him to hang on for the Twenty20 World Cup championship in India but his legacy will live on. With McCullum having set

the benchmark, Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Corey Anderson and Jimmy Neesham have all produced fast scoring swashbuckling performances in recent years. Add to that the contributions of the remarkable Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor and New Zealand have some formidable batsmen to give hope for the future. However, at Hamilton on Sunday it was the bowlers who starred as Australia’s vaunted batsmen attempted to chase down the Black Caps modest 246.

Not for the first time Matt Henry led the attack with 3 for 60. But it was wily leg-spinner Ish Sodhi who won man of the match honours with his 2 for 31 from eight overs, backed Corey Anderson’s 2 for 16 and Dough Bracewell’s miserly 1 for 16 from six. Having replaced an injured Mitch Santner at the 11th hour, it is interesting to note that Sodhi turns the ball more although Santner is clearly the superior batsman. Still Sodhi should be a valuable asset on the Indian wickets during the T20 World Cup although it is a shame no place could be found for the admirable Henry. Even more puzzling is the failure to find a T20 place for the in-form Guptill in the lucrative Indian Premier League although it is true he has struggled against spin on Indian wickets. Meanwhile it was great to see league star Shaun Johnson come through unscathed in the Auckland Nines following his horrendous ankle injury last year.
