P
olice say they cannot rule out a link between the four service station burglaries in Pakuranga last week. The three stolen cars used in the aggravated burglaries were taken from and dumped at similar locations in close proximity to each other and all the offences occurred in the early hours of the morning at 24 hour service stations – three of them on Pakuranga Road and one on Reeves Road. Cigarettes and cash were targeted. The vehicles used in the burglaries – which occurred within four days of each other – were stolen from Howick and Half Moon Bay
and were later dumped in Bucklands Beach and Mellons Bay. The officer in charge of the Counties Manukau Police major crime team, detective senior sergeant Albie Alexander, is appealing to residents in those areas to be vigilant and has asked that any suspicious activity be reported to police immediately. He told the Times that police cannot rule out a link between the four offences. The first of the four burglaries occurred at about 4.20am on December 5 (Monday) at the BP service station on Pakuranga Road. Two more service stations were then burgled last Thursday morning (December 8). A white Subaru Legacy stolen from Howick was used in both and was later dumped in Bucklands Beach on the corner of Macleans Road and Bleakhouse Road, not far from where the other two stolen cars were left. The Gull service station on Reeves Road was hit first, shortly before 1.40am, with the three offenders using a hammer to break in. A Gull spokesman told the Times that there was one staff member on duty at the time and that the offenders smashed through glass to get in. They stole cigarettes.

A staff member at Caltex told the Times that the car rammed through the doors – there were no bollards protecting the doors – and two offenders stole cigarettes and two tills. The employee on duty ran out the back and was unhurt.

December 2016 marks the end of an era for the Cockle Bay resident, who is a current partner of Denham Bramwell law firm and a firm supporter of charity organisation Habitat for Humanity New Zealand. After earning his degree, working in London and returning to New Zealand with his British wife, Mr Delugar was made partner at Brookfield Prendergast Schnauer and Smytherman one year after joining the firm. In June 2014, he opened Denham Bramwell Lawyers in Manukau with former business partner Brett Abraham, offering property, estates and trusts,

Long-time friend and colleague Ken Stevenson says Mr Delugar’s passion for going above and beyond to help people, particularly in the form of pro-bono legal work, has led to a “tremendous contribution” being made by the top-tier
lawyer. It’s a contribution Mr Stevenson estimates would have otherwise cost the organisation thousands of dollars. “When Habitat for Humanity first started up, we needed proper legal documents for national (family and international contracts), and he did that all for free. It was outstanding,” says Mr Stevenson. The two friends first met at the Manukau Rotary Club, when they joined a committee dedicated to starting up Habitat for Humanity in the Manukau area. Mr Delugar went on to serve on the national board of Habitat for Humanity NZ as Manukau’s representative for nine years, working with the rest of the board to fulfil its obligations to Habitat for Humanity International and within New Zealand.
He also served as president of the Manukau Rotary Club for around 12 months in the mid 1990’s. He’ll be remembered as a “genuine lawyer” with a stellar sense of humour, Mr Stevenson says, as he begins to recall the most hilarious moments of Mr Delugar’s time with Habitat for Humanity. “When we first started up [Habitat for Humanity], we needed money, so we started selling sausages outside Pak’n’Save Manukau. We were all yelling out, “come buy a sausage!” but not John. He was simply standing there, and in his polite legal speak he would say, “excuse me sir, would you like to buy a sausage?” when people passed by, instead of yahooing like the rest of us. “He’s a really neat guy.” Mr Delugar will move to Christchurch to be closer to family this summer.

akaaranga School and Farm Cove Intermediate have sent out messages to reassure parents following reports of students being approached and spoken to by strangers in Farm Cove last week. The Times revealed last Thursday that police were investigating a report of a young school girl being approached by a stranger in Farm Cove on Wednesday morning. The girl was walking to school alone on Butley Drive towards Wakaaranga School when a man in a dark black/blue car crossed over the road and pulled up beside her. Inspector Wendy Spiller confirmed to the Times last Thursday that the incident had been reported to police and that they were investigating it. According to the report received by police – the details of which were also posted on Facebook by the mother of the girl – the man asked the girl if she wanted to get into his car. The Wakaaranga School student ran away from the road and hid until the stranger had moved on. Last Friday morning, Farm Cove Intermediate – which is also located on Butley Drive – sent out a message saying there had

We were just being very cautious in the light of recent news reports.” There have been reports of at least four different youths being approached by strangers in west Auckland over the past few weeks and on November 17 an 11-year-old boy was abducted in Ranui and sexually assaulted. He said the Gull service station on Reeves Road had now installed a new cigarette dispensing system following the burglary, so only one packet comes out at a time for future protection. About five minutes after the Gull service station burglary, the three offenders in the stolen Subaru arrived at the Z service station on Pakuranga Road and again used a hammer to break in. Z’s corporate communications manager Jonathan Hill told the Times from Wellington that the offenders got away with a small amount of tobacco. “They smashed their way into the site. The person [on shift] got to the secure part of the site,” he said.
The staff member was unhurt and was offered counselling. Mr Hill said the Z service station on Pakuranga Road basically carries no cash on the premises. The company has introduced a range of measures in a bid to minimise burglaries, he said. “We’ve implemented a programme of increased security over the last 12 months costing millions of dollars making [burglary] of Z sites unattractive. “It’s very disappointing this has happened.” Detective senior sergeant Albie Alexander said police are looking for information regarding the movements of the three stolen vehicles around those times last week, as well as information on any suspicious activity around the locations where the cars were stolen from and dumped. “Further information regarding suspicious cigarette sales is
that they do not believe this to be a related incident. “The school has acted as quickly as possible to get the facts of this incident from the police and we will keep all parents and caregivers up to date.” He asked parents to remind their children of the “keeping ourselves safe” programme that is taught at school. “The key messages to reinforce with your kids is that if something occurs they first need to run away into a nearby house/safe location to get help and secondly to tell a teacher, parent or another adult immediately.” The Times spoke with the principals of both schools last Friday and they emphasised that they were in contact with police and were working to reassure the school community. Meanwhile, the mother of the Wakaaranga School girl said on Facebook last Wednesday that her daughter usually walks to school with a few children, but was walking alone that morning. She said, fortunately, her daughter is aware of “stranger danger” and managed to escape safely. “We have informed the police of the incident who then followed up with an interview. She was able to give them some information and they are taking the incident seriously.”
The mother, who the Times has chosen not to name, asked other parents to please warn their children to be alert and not to talk to strangers. “It is very scary that something like this is happening so close to home and I hope that this man does not prey on any more children.” Police said the male who approached the girl on Wednesday morning was described as being dark skinned, wearing sun glasses, having long black hair past his shoulders – hair was straight in some places and curly in others, eyes that looked “bluey” in colour through the glasses he wore, was clean shaven, and was wearing a red-coloured Adidas t-shirt with a large white Adidas logo in the centre of the shirt. The male had rotten teeth, “as in really yellow”, the description provided by police said. He had no accent, which was also described as “a New Zealand accent”. Man charged with ‘indecent act’
Childcare facility for cottage? By Nick Krause and Marianne Kelly Heritage listed Smales cottage in Botany has been sold and could become a childcare facility. It was the first time the ‘dairy manager’s cottage’ on the corner of Smales and Chapel roads had come up for sale in 40 years. Known as Smales cottage, the house is one of the few historic buildings left in the Flat Bush-East Tamaki area. It has protected heritage status over the exterior but not the interior and, as a consequence, the tender documents stipulate the property must be restored. It currently has no electricity, water or sewage connections. Howick historian Alan La Roche has a long association with the unoccupied cottage and says the old early settler appearance will be retained. He has been keeping it tidy and, until recently, hung clothes on the line to deter vandalism on behalf of the property owner, the Archibald Somerville Trust. “I wanted to make sure this historic cottage was retained as part of our East Tamaki heritage,” he told the Times in September. “There are few historic buildings left in Flat BushEast Tamaki. I arranged for the building to be repainted and I did some repairs.” Initially, Mr La Roche

man from Pakuranga was this week charged with one count of committing an indecent act. Police interviewed the 51-yearold on Tuesday and charged him in relation to an incident that occurred at Howick Beach on November 24. The man is due to appear in the Manukau District Court. Police said on Tuesday that they were still investigating other incidents at east Auckland beaches and were following promising lines of enquiry. “We continue to urge beachgoers to be vigilant and report all suspicious activity to police immediately.”

says, the cottage was part of the Reverend Gideon Smales farm from 1852 to 1894. He lived at “Hampton Park” which includes the historic St John’s Church in East Tamaki Road. The area is now an historical reserve administered by Auckland Council. The Smales-Chapel Road cottage was built in about 1894 by Ambury and English and Company as accommodation for the company’s dairy factory manager, Mr La Roche says. The cottage used to have a large block of land, but with the widened Smales and Chapel Roads there is less land. Tim Irvine, branch manager at Barfoot & Thompson’s Ponsonby office which conducted the sale, confirmed the building sold last month after six weeks on the market.
Mr Irvine could not reveal how much the building was purchased for and would only say a local developer/ business owner had bought the old home. Asked if he knew what the property was to be used for, he said “possibly a childcare centre”. It’s not the first historic building in the area to be go this way. The 117-year-old Guy Homestead on Ti Rakau Drive was on the market for 10 years. JP Singh and business partner Kuljeet Singh paid close to the $3.5 million asking price for the property early in 2014. The Piccolo Park farmthemed child care centre was the culmination of 15 months’ work on the Guy Homestead Restoration Project which opened in May last year to cater for 120 youngsters with a staff of around 17.
Four indecent act incidents have been reported in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach and at Eastern Beach and Lloyd Elsmore Park in recent weeks. The two incidents that occurred in the vicinity of Mellons Bay Beach were on November 24. It is not yet known if the Pakuranga man’s charge is in relation to one of those incidents or a different one. The Eastern Beach incident occurred on November 29 and the Lloyd Elsmore Park incident occurred on December 2.

Please Sir! SOLUTIONS, with the Citizens Advice Bureau We are all familiar with the phrase “Please Sir, I want more” from Oliver Twist. Christmas is now only weeks away and this means extra expense and hardship for families struggling to make ends meet. Each year approximately 150,000 food parcels are distributed to New Zealanders in need. The Auckland City Mission collects bulk food supplies and distributes to other Auckland City Foodbanks and runs a Community Food Programme. Maximum of six parcels per year per person, criteria applies. The City Mission was established in 1920 and is one of several church based organisations that provide relief. Other organisations include the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul. Picking and preserving neighbourhood fruit for charities. The purpose is to facilitate the sharing of fruit from our own backyards and orchards. The fruit that is surplus will be distributed to charities like the Auckland City Mission. fruit.co.nz The Citizens Advice Bureau often facilitates the obtaining of food parcels for those in need. When a request comes into our bureau for a food parcel we contact one of the organisations that supply to our community. We establish what the need is and if they require budgeting advice. Spare a thought for the volunteers behind the scenes who work tirelessly collecting the food, boxing and distributing to needy families. A couple of volunteers will travel to the City Mission, usually on a fortnightly basis to collect bread, rice, Weetabix and any supplies that are available for to make up the food parcels and replenish their supplies at the foodbank. These volunteers are always willing to help those requiring a food parcel by making sure food is available. Often when we telephone with a request, they will stop whatever they are doing in their own private lives, gardening, collecting children from school etc., to make up a parcel for those in need and in some cases will deliver the food parcel

Parishioners from the local churches often donate money, which is used to purchase food vouchers for perishables such as eggs and milk. Food parcels are designed to feed a family or individual for four days to get them through a crisis. They are nutritionally balanced and made up of simple items that can be made into healthy meals. As a Whip and a Member of Parliament, my role has enabled me to work closely with the leadership. Bill English has demonstrated exceptional capabilities as the Minister for Finance where he has worked in a dedicated fashion alongside John Key. Through some incredibly challenging times that New Zealand has faced, Bill has been right there by JK’s side. These include the global financial crisis, the Canterbury earthquakes, and knocking the public service into shape. He has shown excellent skill
MP for Botany in navigating the country safely through both financial disasters and natural disasters. Our new Prime Minister has been the driving force of many Government policy changes, such as social investment and the Better Public Services programme. As the Minister for Finance he has driven our Government agencies to provide better outcomes for New Zealanders without drastic budget increases. He has also championed a model of Government where we identify ways to invest in social services as the front end to ensure better long term outcomes for those most in need. Getting an education, a job, and a life of greater opportunities has been his driving force behind government economic and social policy. The past week has seen a very large shift in the political leadership of the country. But we have managed to deliver both continuity and contrast with the election of Bill English and Paula Bennett. Cleanfill site a step closer to great park By Laura Brookes
Y
esterday marked the end of an era for the Greenmount cleanfill site as one of the final topsoil deliveries is made in the wake of plans to restore the site back to its former glory. Around 30 people attended the special Topping Off ceremony held on December 14 to celebrate the milestone achievement, including Lushington Estate members, Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki iwi, the Howick Local Board and EnviroNZ staff. The 54ha former quarry site, located on the corner of Harris Road and Smales Road, was decommissioned as a landfill in 2005. Managed fill operations have been underway since then to restore the site to its original landform, with plans for the site to consist of a 70m high grassed dome with a flat peak and unique 360 views of Auckland. Managing director of EnviroNZ Gary Saunders says he is very proud of the 11-year project to restore the site and now feels ready to hand it over, knowing what is planned for the future. “Under our stewardship the land has been returned close to its original form,” says Mr

Saunders. “When we were almost ready to hand it over [about three to four years ago] we looked around and we saw the view that we’re seeing now, and decided that we didn’t just want to hand the site over undeveloped.” He announced at the Wednesday meeting that EnviroNZ has chosen to provide $10,000 worth of trees as a commemorative gift to the people of East Tamaki for the purpose of enhancing the park. Mr Saunders is hoping the Greenmount site, when completed, will become an iconic spot for Auckland tourism,
and compared it to the likes of Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill. “It’s a fantastic outcome,” he says. “We’ve got 360 degree views and that’s something you really can’t replicate in many places.” It’s now the job of the Howick Local Board to lead the future development of the land, with plans to create an extensive public space, complete with a children’s playground, fitness facilities, an off-leash dog area and walking and cycling tracks. Howick Local Board chairperson David Collings attended the ceremony and says he is very excited to see the project unfold in stages over the next few years. “I’ve been in local government for 18 years and this is one of the most collaborative projects we’ve ever been a part of. “This place has come a long way in recent years, and the board is excited about the prospect of being able to transform the land in to a public space for everyone to enjoy. “It will create a muchneeded oasis for Greenmount and East Tamaki workers... it’s a win-win.” The park is expected to open for public use in stages as development takes place.

Both patients were taken to the Maraetai Boat Club where they were assessed by medicallytrained Coastguard volunteers, and transferred to the care of St John paramedics and police. “We’re pleased to say that, due to the rapid actions of Ray and the Coastguard volunteers aboard Maraetai Rescue One and in the Operations Centre, that the outcome of their swim was a happy one and that the whole family is safe,” he said. “The man, who required urgent hospitalisation, was
very lucky to have been spotted at all by Ray, who is highly experienced in search-and-rescue and is a strong swimmer, and who was able to immediately help and summon further assistance from Coastguard. “It’s a timely reminder to be aware of your own abilities in the water, and to know that weather conditions can change rapidly and result in swimmers and boaties alike getting into difficulty. The use of buoyancy aids or lifejackets when going significant distance offshore is also recommended.”

On the evening of Sunday 11 December, Coastguard operations manager Ray Burge was driving past Waiomanu Bay, east of Maraetai Beach, with his family when he noticed a man in the water frantically waving his arms. Mr Burge, off duty, stopped his car and ran down to the beach, where he was met by three small children who told him that the man in the water, to whom they were related, needed help. Ray made a quick call to the Coastguard Operations Centre, before swimming out to the man who had drifted about 200m out to sea, and was struggling. After bringing the man ashore and summoning an ambulance, Mr Burge’s family found out from the children their mother was also in the water, and that the man – her partner – had tried swimming out to her. She couldn’t be immediately spotted from the beach, so the alarm was raised with the Coastguard Operations Centre. “Volunteers from Coastguard Maraetai responded quickly, launching Coastguard rescue vessel Maraetai Rescue One in under six minutes,” a Coastguard spokesman said. After a short search, the team located the woman some 400m offshore, and pulled her from the rough

t is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jess Potter on Wednesday December 12. Mrs Potter, 84, in 2012 collected Times Newspapers’ War Veterans’ Community Service Award for dedication to her community at the Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo. “It was an honour to present Jess with the award as she’s so dedicated to her community and that is something that makes Howick special,” said Reay Neben, managing director of Times Newspaper, at the time. “Jess has worked tirelessly for the Howick RSA (Returned and Services’ Association) and is considered the matriarch of the women’s section.” It took this girl from Matiere to get action for a RSA women’s section in Howick. Jessie Minna Hilda Potter moved to Auckland with her late husband George after selling their farm at Matiere, about 42 kilometres from Taumarunui, King Country. Dance teacher becomes inventor of new game Long-time dance teacher comes up with winning game idea and is taking it to the world Howick dance teacher Claire Sciascia’s game Scatterbones is set to be distributed on a global scale. After 23 years of teaching dance, Howick resident Claire Sciascia is passing on the ownership of her beloved studio Dance Xpress to pursue another hobby – invention. Driving home from the studio one night, Mrs Sciascia came up with the idea for Scatterbones, a game where players must flip all their bones to complete a fully-fledged skeleton figure. It all started with a cheap prototype made of Warehouse-purchased clay, an enthusiastic seven-yearold to kid-proof the game, and a Google search on how games get published nowadays. She never imagined her idea would go global, but the mother-of-three hit the jackpot when she flew to England for the annual Inventor’s Workshop and pitched her idea in person to some of the world’s biggest game companies. Organisers picked up the prototype, and Scatterbones is now set to be distributed internationally in 2017 by toy and game licensing agency

In the past month and a half, the game has been featured in Hong Kong and Chicago trade fairs, and Mrs Sciascia started to receive calls from distributors in New Zealand after her invention was promoted on Seven Sharp. It’s an exciting change for the mother-of-three, who has taught dance in east Auckland for 23 years, and held ownership of Dance Xpress for 10 years. “I’ve taught and watched some of those kids grow up since they were little, so it’s definitely bittersweet.” Neverland Studios will
take over the Pakurangabased facility, adding a third location to their Mairangi Bay and Ponsonby studios – news that Mrs Sciascia says is “massively exciting” for dancers in east Auckland. “Ashleigh and Alley [new owners] are so passionate about their dance... and their studios are amazing. I couldn’t have passed it onto anyone better.” Mrs Sciascia will still be teaching at the Pakuranga studio, but says she is looking forward to spending more time on her inventions, and getting a headstart on her next idea – whatever that may be.

ids from the Pakuranga United Rugby Club are asking motorists to drive slower as part of the new Love being a Local campaign. Club manager Stephen Hackett says Auckland’s roads need to be made safer for both pedestrians and motorists – and he hopes jumping on board with the new campaign will achieve that. “We want to make our community safer for everyone to enjoy,” says Mr Hackett. It’s a project welcomed by Howick Local Board member
Adele White, following statistics that reveal speed has been a factor in every serious accident in the EdgewaterPakuranga area since 2011. Auckland Transport’s Cycling Walking and Safety manager Kathryn King says the outcome of road accidents can be significantly “more horrific” if a vehicle is travelling at high speed, and is stressing the importance of considering the locals when driving through community areas. Statistics show a pedestrian hit at 70km/h has a
96 percent chance of dying, compared with 40 percent at 50km/h and five percent at 30km/h. Ms King hopes the campaign will encourage motorists to be patient around residential areas, which are typically frequented by a combination of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. “Everyone wants to get from point A to B as quickly as possible, but motorists have to remember that people are living in the areas they are travelling through... [and to] be considerate.”

Entrepreneur encourages youth to create their own success Passion, gut instinct, hard work and a little terror really pay off By Laura Brookes Howick resident Chloe Brown wants youth to know it’s possible to do what you love and love what you do. With no financial help from family, friends, or the bank, Chloe Brown went from card gaming in high school to co-owning an incorporated company and two physical stores. The 22-year-old Howick resident knows how to create her own success story, and is encouraging unemployed youth to do the same. She and co-owner Matt Rogers met two-and-a-half years ago at Mr Rogers’ store in Takapuna, when he decided to close shop and partner with her to create the web-based business Card Merchant. “I had a shop, but I couldn’t compete with Chloe’s prices,” he jokes. “I asked Chloe to start supplying us with her stock, and then when I sold the business, I approached Chloe about going online to create a website.” That’s when business really kicked off for
business about a year ago. “If you told me a year ago I would be here, I would have laughed,” she says. “But I kept re-investing, and if you don’t take any money out [of the bank], you eventually get to this point.” Ms Brown started the business in the same year she completed her double degree at the University of Auckland – a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Geography and Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She credits her success to hard work, a few long hours and a genuine passion for what she’s doing. If she could give one piece of advice to today’s youth, Ms Brown says it would be to work the network. “When your parents tell you to go to the mall and put your CV into every place, actually do it. Even if you don’t get a job, it will give you confidence,” she says. “Networking is the biggest thing... and if you put in the effort, it is possible.”

the two of them, and eventually provided the opportunity to lease 200sqm premises inside Pakuranga Plaza, as well as a smaller shop in Glenfield which opened in April this year. “When we saw [the Pakuranga store], we thought there’s no way we’re going to be able to afford that,” says Ms Brown. “It was a big risk, and terrifying at the time... you have to do your research, and do your homework,
but at the end of the day, you have to trust your gut, and that’s what we did.” Ms Brown says the business has been “a labour of love” from the beginning. She always enjoyed card gaming as a hobby, but when attempts to find a part-time job proved unsuccessful in high school, she bought $100 of card stock and started onselling her collection to earn money for university – only to turn that into a

It’s a time for rest and relaxation Christmas shopping (which saw New Zealanders spend a record $6 billion in December 2015) along with end of year parties means we generate around 30 per cent more waste nationally during the festive season. In seaside and tourist areas there is a massive 400 per cent increase in waste and most of it can be recycled if people put it into the recycling bin rather than the rubbish bin. Drinks sales increase to three times above normal levels and whilst recycling may double over this period, there are a lot of glass, cans and plastic bottles not being recycled particularly away from home. The New Zealand recycling rate for drinks containers is over 69 per cent but it would increase significantly if every bar, restaurant and entertainment venue recycled every bottle and can during this busy period. If you are enjoying a take away pizza most councils will recycle these boxes too if you put them in your kerbside collections. And more than 55 per cent of New Zealanders now have access to drop

Local schools collected cans to help people in need at Christmas
O
ver 67,000 cans have been collected in the inaugural Wattie’s Cans for Good campaign which took place in November. More than 200 schools from around the country took part collecting cans to help The Salvation Army stock up its foodbanks to assist New Zealanders in need over the busy Christmas period. Heinz Wattie’s generously donated additional cans taking the number to over 92,000 cans. “Household budgets are stretched by rising living costs, especially for rent and power. With Christmas around the corner, food parcels are a great way to help reduce the stress on families who are doing it tough”, says Major Pamela Waugh, The Salvation Army’s Secretary for Social Services. Participation and feedback from local schools has been overwhelming according to Heinz Wattie’s communications manager Tina Wong. “We wanted to deliver something that was easy for schools, pupils and teachers. Wattie’s Cans for Good went beyond other campaigns combining collecting for charity with a creative competition and a set of teacher based resource sheets designed to engage children and teachers, in a fun, team-based experience,” says Wong. The Salvation Army has been visiting
schools as part of the initiative, talking to children about how they can make a direct and real difference to those in need in their local community. According to Julie Henderson, Principal of Eastern Hutt School, Lower Hutt, initiatives like Wattie’s Cans for Good are a great way to involve all the students and their families in a project. “It helps develop the awareness of others in our community and generates a positive spirit when we all combine our efforts to help others in need,” says Henderson.

Ideas for leftover Christmas ham By Hellers, NZ’s Butcher
W
ell it’s probably Boxing Day and you’re staring at the Hellers Christmas ham leftover in your fridge wondering how on earth you’re going to get through it! I encourage you to store it correctly to get the maximum life out of it and try my delicious recipes that will help use up the leftovers! Croque Monsieur.

CROQUE MONSIEUR This extremely extravagant ham + cheese toastie could only have been dreamt up by the French with all its culinary fabulousness. Dating as far back as 1910, this rich cheesy little beauty has had several versions over the years but I am partial to the classic. To make the béchamel sauce heat in the microwave 1 litre of full milk with 1 bay leaf, 2 whole cloves and a small peeled white onion. In a saucepan over medium heat melt 90g butter, add 90g plain flour whisking continuously for 2-3 mins until it becomes sand like in colour. Gradually add in the strained milk whisking continuously. Add a pinch of nutmeg and whisk occasionally for 12-15 mins until thick and smooth. Remove from heat and whisk in 300g grated gruyere cheese season to taste. Place into a bowl, cover
directly with plastic wrap and set aside to cool a little before you refrigerate for 30 mins. Preheat the grill to medium-high and line a tray with tinfoil. Take 12 slices of thick white bread [crusts on or off your choice] and brush one side with melted butter. Place under the grill butter-side up until golden and crisp. Now turn them over and spread them all with Dijon mustard and 2 tbsp of béchamel sauce. Top 6 pieces with 2 thin slices of leftover Hellers Christmas ham and 2-3 tbsp of grated gruyere, pop under the grill for a minute or so till the cheese has melted. Now top with remaining bread toasted side up and finish with a generous amount of béchamel sauce over the top – it’s ok if it drips down the sides! Pop it back under the grill for

about 5 mins until golden and bubbling, cut in half and gobble them up straight away!
BRUSCHETTA WITH ROASTED NECTARINES, HAM + BUFFALO MOZZARELLA Beautiful in season nectarines are the perfect match with ham. Pair it up with the creamy texture of buffalo mozzarella and the chargrilled crunch of bruschetta this makes a wonderful light supper or snack. Preheat your oven to 160C and line a tray with baking paper. Cut 6 nectarines in half and remove the cores, place cut side up on the tray. Sprinkle lightly with brown sugar, a squeeze of lemon or verjuice and bake till soft and they start to caramelise. Grill on the bbq over medium flame 3 generous slices of sour dough bread till both sides have distinct chargrilled marks. Remove and lightly rub one side with peeled garlic, season and drizzle with olive oil. Top with 2-3 slices of buffalo mozzarella, 2 roasted nectarine halves, leftover Hellers Christmas ham cut into fine strips and some torn fresh tarragon leaves.

Start by slicing a fresh ciabatta roll in half and spreading the bottom with a small amount of good quality tomato chutney and the top firstly with Dijon mustard and then a good-quality mayonnaise. To the bottom add shredded iceberg lettuce, thinly sliced red onion, ripe tomato and avocado slices. Season at this stage and squeeze a little lemon juice over the avocado. In a heavy based frying pan melt a little butter and oil till bubbling then place in 2 thick slices of leftover Hellers Christmas ham [make sure you get some fatty bits from the edge they fry up deliciously!]. Fry both sides till golden and the edges start to caramelise then place directly into your prepared roll. Eat immediately!
POTATO SALAD With CHRISTMAS HAM + GREEN GODDESS DRESSING Green Goddess is a delicious American dressing that dates back supposedly to 1920. Heavenly creamy, herby and fragrant it will keep well in a jar for up to a week in your fridge. Boil 1kg of waxy potatoes [little gourmets and jersey bennies are ideal] skin on or scrubbed till just tender. Drain, cool slightly, cut in half then place into a large bowl. To make the green goddess dressing place in a powerful blender or food processor – 1 ripe avocado; 3 tbsp each of coriander leaves; chopped chives and Italian parsley leaves; 10 large basil leaves; 1 tbsp tarragon leaves; 2 spring onions roughly chopped [dark green ends removed]; 1 garlic clove peeled; 2 tbsp liquid honey; Juice of 1 lemon; ½ cup buttermilk – you may have to add a little more to thin the dressing if needed. Finish with sea salt to taste and a twist of cracked pepper.
Add a generous amount of dressing to the cooked potatoes and fold through gently. You can either slice a few pieces of your leftover Hellers Christmas ham onto each serving plate and add the green goddess potato on the side or finely cut it into strips to add directly into your potato salad and serve.
CAMPFIRE ONE PAN FRY-UP Whether you’re away on your summer holidays and have leftover Christmas ham or at home, this quick and simple recipe is easy on the dishes and makes an awesome meal for any time of the day! Over an open campfire, on top of your bbq or at home on the stove place a heavy based fry-pan over medium heat. Add a little oil plus butter and 1 sliced red onion, cook till tender. Add 2 squashed garlic cloves [with the back of a wooden spoon] and 2-3 large slices of leftover Hellers Christmas ham roughly chopped. Fry till it starts to caramelise then add 1 tin of chopped canned tomatoes, a pinch of ground cumin, a few fresh thyme sprigs and ½ sprig of fresh rosemary [dried is fine if you are camping!]. Cook for 10 mins then add 1 can of drained cooked cannellini beans and a large knob of butter. Stir through gently and cook a further 5 mins. Now make a few gaps as the sauce would have reduced a little and crack in 2-4 eggs. If you are at home you can pop it into a moderate oven or put the cover down on your bbq till the yolks are just starting to set. If you are sitting by the campfire then simple cover in tinfoil and carefully check after 5 mins or so. Serve with crusty, buttered, chargrilled sourdough, top the dish with shaved parmesan, ½ lemon zest and freshly chopped Italian parsley – only if you have them handy in your camp chillibin!

INGREDIENTS ✦ 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal ✦ 3 tbsp butter ✦ 300 grams marshmallows ✦ Green food colouring ✦ 12 miniature Reese’s Cups ✦ 1/3 cup M&M Minis ✦ 12 candy stars ✦ 3 cups icing sugar ✦ 3 tbsp milk ✦ 3 tbsp corn syrup DIRECTIONS

PEAR AND CRANBERRY QUINOA SALAD Prep time: 10 minutes, Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 to 6
INGREDIENTS ✦ 1 cup quinoa ✦ 2 cups water and stir until cereal is well coated. Allow to set about 4 minutes. Butter your hands and form mixture into cone shapes. Place cones onto prepared pan. Allow to cool and firm up for several hours. Mix powdered sugar, milk and corn syrup in a bowl until smooth. Transfer to piping bag or zippered bag to pipe onto cookies. Pipe like a garland around each tree. Space M&M Minis like ornaments onto the garland. Pipe a dab of icing on top of tree to act as glue and attach star. Place a Reese’s upside down on pan. DIRECTIONS Rinse the quinoa under cold water and drain well. In a frying
pan, bring water and salt to a boil. Add the quinoa. Cover and cook over low heat for 13 to 15 minutes, until the quinoa has absorbed the water and is transparent. Let sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and let cool to room temperature. In a small bowl, whip oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper to make the dressing. In a large salad bowl, gently mix the quinoa, pear slices, spinach leaves, cranberries and nuts. Add dressing, stir well and serve.

To help in forming the cone shape, I took the foam or cardboard that comes in a waffle cone pack to protect the cones and cut it to make a form to help shape the trees. Line a cookie sheet with baking paper. In a medium to large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. 2016 at Highland Park has been a busy year. The centre has been a prolonged building site which in turn has seen the completion of new offices, new retail shops & refurbishments, completion of new undercover walkways and new service providers such as Mankelow Accounts & Nandish Chiropractic. During this construction period we were grateful for the positive support you as customers gave us despite the disruption in the immediate areas. From the many comments received we are confident that the improvements we have made have and will continue to improve your shopping experience. January 2017 will see the start of the relocation of the Post Boxes to the inside rear entrance area of Paper Plus. Highland Park Jewellers will complete a makeover during this time as well and a new retail shop will replace the current Post Box area which is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete with, we are hoping, little disruption for you our customers. There has been much talk and interest in the proposed undercover Pop-Up retail and Market area which will launch in February. We see this as a very community-minded, meeting and promotion area and will encourage organisations to utilise it. Finally we wish to extend to you our customers hearty Christmas Celebrations with a safe transition into 2017 and look forward to your continued patronage at Highland Park Shopping Centre.

Christmas Walkthrough bound to impress
I
t’s all about celebration, and bringing the true meaning of Christmas to the community. That’s the motivation behind Eastgate Christian Centre’s annual Christmas Walkthrough, and if the lines out the front door are anything like they’ve been in previous years, this year’s production is bound to be a hit with the locals. With around 6000 people attending the event each year, the Christmas Walkthrough is the biggest community event hosted annually by Eastgate Christian Centre. Titled The Frost Files: A Christmas Mystery, the production tells the story of a lonely Wiseman who misses the clues about where Jesus is being born, and ends up in the office of Detective Frost, desperate to find his way with the one clue he remembers – something about a star. Four dynamic and creative multimedia sets pull together the 25-minute production – a detective’s office, a Stars in their Eyes television set, a make-shift bakery to double as a star in the yeast, according to the uncanny Detective, and the traditional nativity set. When the walk-through is over, staff members Sam Taylor and Naveena Joll say the place will still be buzzing with entertainment – tea, coffee, face painting, snacks, and a photo booth for guests to dress up and grab a photo.

Eastgate Christian Centre’s annual production attracts thousands. It’s a production that involves more than 250 volunteers, costs approximately $20-25k each year, is partly funded by the Howick Local Board and is completely free for the community. Team member Erin Lawson, who has been involved in the Christmas Walkthrough for 10 years, says she’s most looking forward to sneaking out from backstage and witnessing the buzz of excitement in the crowd. Filled with interactive entertainment and humour to amuse the whole family, Mr Taylor says the show is suitable for people of all ages, and will be a fantastic night out for families. “People get so distracted away from the true meaning of Christmas by the commercialism of it,” says Mr Taylor. “We wanted to come up with a creative idea to relate with people and focus on the

Christmas story as well.” He hopes it will bring about “a realisation that Christmas isn’t just about Santa Claus, and that everyone is able to connect with Jesus”, as the Wiseman eventually does. It’s wheelchair-friendly too, so guests who are unable to make it up the stairs for the first scene are able to watch it play out on a television screen, and join the crowd for scene two. Now in its 11th year, Mr Taylor says the community event is a highlight on the calendar. ✦ The Frost Files: A Christmas Mystery runs nightly from 7-10pm on Sunday December 18 to Friday December 23 at Eastgate Christian Centre, 5 Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga. Kiwi men want love for Christmas
A
new survey from dating site EliteSingles has revealed that, while Kiwi men and women both hate being single at Christmas, men are far more likely to view it as a romantic holiday. ✦ 52 per cent of Kiwi women and 45 per cent of men think Christmas is the worst time of year to be single ✦ Men are more likely than women to want to celebrate the festive season as a couple ✦ 69 per cent of men, 51 per cent of women think it’s a great time of year for a new partner to meet the family ✦ Men are more enthusiastic than women about exchanging Christmas presents
Men are also more likely than women to think of Christmas as the perfect occasion for a new partner to meet the family, with 69 per cent agreeing that everyone being in one place makes it easy. Women were more divided: 51 per cent agree with the men, while 49 per cent think that there’s too much pressure at Christmas.

New Zealanders don’t want to be single at Christmas The survey of 200 New Zealand singles asked respondents to name the day of the year when they least wanted to be single. Men and women are of one mind: 52 per cent of women and 45 per cent of men think being single on Christmas Day is worse than being single on Valentine’s Day or on New Year’s Eve. However, Kiwi men are more inclined to Christmas romance overall.

Men are also happier to give big items earlier: Fourteen per cent of men (and just 6 per cent of women) think it is ok to gift something big, expensive, and/or meaningful within the first month of dating. However, with 38 per cent of women revealing that they’ve been made to feel uncomfortable in the past by being given a fancy gift too soon into a relationship, men in very new romances are urged to curb their festive enthusiasm (at least until next Christmas comes around).

Kiwis reckon Trump wouldn’t cut it as Father Christmas

e may be Time Magazine’s Person of the Year but Kiwis think Donald Trump would be the worst Santa Claus according to Colmar Brunton’s 2016 Christmas survey. The annual survey this year asked Kiwis who they thought would make the best and worst Santa, as well as what makes for the best and worst stocking fillers and when Christmas advertising should start and when you should stop believing in Father Christmas. US President-elect Trump was a clear choice in the worst Santa category on 38 per cent, ahead of Kanye West (13 per cent), who has threatened to run for the US presidency in 2020, and New Zealand’s own polarising media personality, Paul Henry, is in third place on 11 per cent. Colmar Brunton Account Manager Jessica Balbas says women clearly were much less keen than men on the idea of The Donald as Santa, with 47 per cent of female respondents nominating him as the worst Santa compared to 28 per cent of males. She says while those results may not surprise anybody the choice for best Santa was a bit less predictable. All Blacks record-breaking captain Richie McCaw, who has recently spent

“I guess when Kiwis think of Sir Ian they see him as Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings, complete with white hair and white beard, which makes him a natural fit,” Ms Balbas says. And when asked up to what age it is acceptable for children to believe in Santa, a solid two thirds of Kiwis said it was acceptable to believe at any age. “I think kids these days have caught on to the ‘if you continue to believe you will continue to receive’ theory and are happy to play along well into their teens.” The Christmas survey also saw Kiwis come out against the recent trend of Christmas advertising launching earlier and earlier in the year. A whopping 87 per cent were in favour of restricting Christmas advertising to November and December. When it comes to stocking fillers, the advice, based on the survey results, is stock up on lollies, chocolate, gift cards, books and magazines but avoid the likes of socks, undies and fruit. “Clearly Christmas is still seen as a time for treats rather than prioritising the healthier 5+ a day ethos,” Ms Balbas says. A representative sample of 500 New Zealanders were surveyed and the survey has a maximum margin of error of + or – 4.4 per cent.

For more than a decade, the museum has raised funds through this fun-filled event to buy Christmas gifts for those less fortunate. Entry is only $2 per person and supported charities are Auckland Women’s Refuge and Auckland City Mission. How unfortunate that journalistic lack of judgment resulted in the placement of an extremely large and unsavoury headline accompanying the photograph. Most newspapers will feature a strong photograph and main story or stories on page one, and again inside.
Speed is the single biggest road safety issue in New Zealand today. There has been a serious accident almost every year in the Pakuranga/ Edgewater district since 2011, and high speed has been a factor in all of them. All of these accidents have been on urban roads. The faster you drive the more horrific the injuries in the event of a road crash. In fact, a pedestrian hit at 70km/h has a 96% chance of dying, compared with 40% at 50km/h, and only 5% at 30km/h*. Being part of a community includes looking out for each other and sharing the roads. There is a huge
impact on family and friends when loved ones are killed or seriously injured. Driving at a safe speed for various road conditions means the likelihood of a road crash causing injury to yourself and others is markedly reduced.

I read your article regarding the Half Moon Bay ferry with interest (Times, November 24). I have been a regular commuter on the ferry and have also been caught out by service cancellation. I have also witnessed ferries sailing at times completely at odds with the published schedule. I have complained to the AT Customer Service desk on more than one occasion regarding unscheduled sailings as it is impossible to plan my arrival at work if the ferry does not keep to the schedule. The most common cause of interrupted sailings appears to be the fact that the ferry cannot get to the wharf at low tide. This amazes me. How can a ferry operate if it cannot navigate the river at low tide. Ferry journeys have been replaced with busses and taxis. This must add to the overall cost of the service. Surely Fullers need ferries suitable to the conditions in which they operate. I have used the AT website to recommend they install electronic notice boards similar to those used at bus stops to provide up-to-date information. This suggestion was never acknowledged and now I see that the facility to provide this type of feedback has been removed from the website. It does not surprise me that Aucklanders do not use public transport if they can help it as it is still too difficult in a city that was designed to use private cars for transport. When the Auckland Unitary Plan (“the Plan”) first came out it included a specific “overlay” for Howick excluding high rise building around the Village or around Stockade Hill. Community meetings were held and the outcome of these meetings was: To keep the northern side of the ridge and the main street free from high rise development. This is what the Howick community wanted. BUT Long after submissions were closed, a new raft of “upzoning” to create greater city-wide intensification was secretly inserted into the Plan. Fortunately this was reversed through an “extraordinary” session of Council on February 24, 2016, voted upon and thrown out by 13 votes to 8. YET In the final Decisions Version of the Plan in August, all this secret “upzoning” was back! Including in Howick. This blatant disregard of the vote demonstrates nothing less than a cynical, casual contempt for the democratic process. To allow a wall of 13 metre high apartments to be built to the north and east of Stockade Hill and Howick Village, destroying the huge and areadefining Gulf views is the death knell to the sacred places and character of this unique and historic area. Ironically, Stockade Hill surroundings and views are also an inseparable part of our Anzac heritage, remembering those who gave everything to maintain the values we enjoy as a democratic society. There were 1779 dwellings sold by auction nationally in November, representing 24 per cent of all sales and a decrease of 11 (-1 per cent) on the number of auctions in November 2015. Transactions in Auckland represented 55 per cent of national auction sales, with the number of auctions in Waikato/Bay of Plenty representing 19 per cent of national auction sales. The number of auction sales in Wellington, Canterbury/Westland and Waikato/Bay of Plenty increased 69 per cent compared to November 2015.

Inventory is continuing to decline nationwide, with an 8 per cent fall in properties available for sale year-on-year and two regions with less than 12 weeks of supply. Wellington has nine weeks of supply available and Hawke’s Bay has 11 weeks supply. Spring listings have eased the inventory position somewhat, but all regions saw a decline in inventory in November.

There were 7576 unconditional residential sales in November, representing a 13 per cent increase on October but a 6 per cent decrease on November 2015. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of sales fell less than 1 per cent from October to November.
Median prices jump, led by the regions
The national median house price rose $60,500 (+13 per cent) year-on-year, to set a new record median of $520,000. Compared to October the national median house price rose $10,000 (+2 per cent). Central Otago Lakes recorded the largest percentage increase in median price compared to November 2015, at 32 per cent, followed by Nelson/ Marlborough at 24 per cent and Waikato/Bay of Plenty at 20 per cent.
The number of properties available for sale across all regions in New Zealand fell 5722 (-19 per cent) between November 2015 and November 2016. Wellington has the fewest properties for sale with nine weeks of supply, closely followed by Hawke’s Bay with under 11 weeks supply. Across the country there is just under four months of supply, with all regions seeing a decline in availability between November 2015 and November 2016. The number of days to sell remained steady at 32 days compared to November 2015, although the regions have seen some significant movements with five regions seeing an increase in the number of days to sell and seven regions a decrease. Otago and Southland had the shortest number of days to sell in November at 25 days followed by Manawatu/Wanganui and Wellington at 26 days.
Million dollar homes show largest increase in volumes
Between November 2015 and November 2016, the number of homes sold for more than $1 million rose by 32 per cent to 1106 homes to equal almost 15 per cent of all dwellings sold. The number of dwellings sold under $600,000 has declined by 977 between November 2015 and November 2016 compared to a fall of 472 for all dwellings.

Ten of 12 regions in New Zealand hit new record high median sale prices in November 2016, with the national median price also reaching a new record median of $520,000, and all but two regions showed double-digit percentage growth. Only Auckland and Central Otago Lakes did not post new record median prices. Auckland eased back from a record in October, and Central Otago Lakes median continued to ease following its rapid price increase earlier in the year. The number of sales for November 2016 was 7576, an increase of 13 per cent on October. Sales volumes fell 6 per cent compared to November 2015. On a seasonally adjusted basis sales for November fell less than 1 per cent. Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) spokesperson Bryan Thomson says: “Sales volumes and prices have recovered in November. “For the first time, our map has been dark blue across the entire country, depicting strong yearon-year price growth or record prices in every region, and double-digit growth across the entire North Island. The nationwide median price has also hit a new high. “Auckland prices eased back in November after hitting a record high in October. “However, the underlying trend of Auckland prices remains steadily upward, rising by $269,944 at a compound annual growth rate of 13.2 per cent since the introduction of the first set of LVR rules in October 2013. “Over the past year, the median house price in Auckland has risen by $86,944. “Outside Auckland, the median price has increased by $83,800 since October 2013, at a compound annual growth rate of 7.6 per cent. “Sales volumes are also up 13 per cent on October across

our local high school touch teams took part in the 2016 New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) National Championships in Auckland over the weekend. The top 48 secondary school touch teams in the country took to the fields of Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura for three days of touch rugby action from December 9-11. A Pakuranga College boys team, a Saint Kentigern College girls team, a Howick College girls team and a Macleans College mixed team competed at the tournament. Pakuranga College finished 12th, Howick College ninth, Saint Kentigern College sixth, and Macleans College fourth. The boys and girls competitions were won by Hamilton Boys’ High School and Hamilton Girls’ High School and the mixed competition was won by Whanganui High School. HSC launches new boat Howick Sailing Club (HSC) officially launched its new committee boat at the weekend, breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow just in time for the busiest period of the summer sailing season. The brand new vessel has been named Kaitiaki, which means guardian in Maori. It will be used as the start boat whenever the club has a race day and will also be used at major sailing events across Auckland. Kaitiaki was made by Innovision Boats and was sponsored and supported by a number of local businesses. Auckland councillor Dick Quax was at the opening on Sunday, as were past HSC commodores. Current commodore Marc Frewin spoke at the event and was given a plaque by the club committee to recognise the amount of work he put into the club getting the new boat. HSC – based at Howick Beach – has races most weekends from now and is hosting some major events in 2017, including the Jolly Boat National Championships in March.

Tough boxing battles await Joseph Parker H
aving made history as the first New Zealandborn boxer to win one version of the multiple world heavyweight titles, Joseph Parker will need to sharpen his act if he is to become undisputed champion against the likes of Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. Having come from behind to win a disputed home decision against American based Mexican Andy Ruiz Jnr from three overseas judges at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Saturday night, 24-year-old Parker achieved his dream of winning the WBO crown. But as in his fight against Carlos Takam, the personable local hero was not entirely convincing against a tough opponent who carried the fight to him by halving the ring and forcing him to counter punch. In the end it was the snappy left jab and Ruiz’s battered face that gave Parker the crown, albeit by just two points on the cards

In winning, the Kiwi Samoan carried his unbeaten professional record to 22, 18 by knockout while the Ruiz suffered his first loss in 30, 19 by KO. Having proved he can sting like a bee, our Joseph needs to hone his defence by showing he can, like the late Mohammad Ali, float like a butterfly. Against fearsome punchers Joshua and Wilder, that could be fatal although Parker claims to have no fear of either. Certainly he doesn’t lack confidence or courage, just as he doesn’t lack speed or power. But he will need to produce a better defence and more combinations if he is to succeed against those two. Like Parker, both are unbeaten with IBF champ Joshua having won all 18 of his professional bouts by KO. WBC champ Wilder has won all 37 of his, an incredible 36 by KO. Meanwhile, Joshua is scheduled to defend his IBF crown against former multiple champion Wladimir Klitshko, as well as contest the WBF and IBO titles left vacant by the troubled Tyson
