We should also know this isn’t going to last forever. I mean, look at how our generation turned out.

My American penpal took a keen interest in politics when we were around 10 (think 1972) and I recall him querying at some length both my knowledge and opinions on things like the Cuban Missile Crisis (happened the year I was born), Vietnam, JFK’s assassination, the Moon Landing – you get my drift. All of these had occurred when we were either both still in nappies or had just begun school. I had neither a view nor an interest in them (okay, except for man touching down on the moon – I’m not a complete ignoramus). After the customary two or three

Fight starts to protect views By Marianne Kelly

ut-of-scope changes which have the potential to block iconic view shafts from Stockade Hill and Crawford Park, Howick, have been left in the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP) to be publicly notified tomorrow. But the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association (HRRA), armed with more than 1000 petition signatures, is hoping to appeal this part of the AUP. The HRRA petition to protect the views reached 1180 signatures, “showing just how passionate people in Howick are about preserving our stunning views”, HRRA chair Gayleen Mackereth says. “We constantly lobbied our councillors to protect these views through the [council] debate last week,” she says. The association asked the council to rezone the

area encircling Crawford Reserve and opposite Stockade Hill to SH (single housing) in keeping with the adjacent and surrounding Cockle Bay SH zone (formerly the Cockle Bay heritage zone). “No action was taken which is very disappointing,” she says. “So we will be looking at the final plan when it is revealed on Friday and make the decision to appeal this part of the plan, dependent on funding. “We are only a voluntary organisation relying on subscriptions to fund our work unless a lawyer steps forth to assist us.” The plan change HRRA is opposing was among unasked for, belated, ‘out of scope changes’ which were reversed by Auckland Council in February after a public outcry. But the plan change involving three to three-and-a-half storey apartment blocks on the north side of

the Howick centre was surprisingly reinstated and included in the Independent Hearing Panel’s recommendations. “The impact on the area around Stockade Hill is catastrophic,” Mrs Mackereth says. “For the sake of developing these 80-odd sections the iconic and unique views will be lost forever. The existing Stockade Hill view shaft is very limited, she says, and has no clear reference to height or width “so cannot protect us from the smart developer building row upon row of three-four 13 metre high apartments”. “Even one higher apartment sticking up in the middle of this view would spoil the impression of the whole. “On the original AUP maps there is only one narrow view shaft aimed at the sea and not at the wider view – that magnificent vista of the Hauraki Gulf – as you

crest the hill into Howick. Nor is there a view shaft protecting the views of Rangitoto and Browns Island and further around the Gulf from Stockade Hill,” Mrs Mackereth says. Many residents, she says, have pointed out that the Crawford Reserve site was bought and the park designed by Manukau City Council to protect these views for posterity. “It must not be allowed to be encircled by rows of apartments of 13 metres high, effectively blocking the views. “People understand how incongruous 400 apartment buildings opposite historic Stockade Hill will be, how they will cut off our views and be totally out of place.” HRRA intends to approach the Mayoral hopefuls to ask if they will support a plan change if elected, as well as asking the Howick Local Board members and Howick Ward councillors,

Mrs Mackereth says it’s a pity nothing was done in response to the association’s petition during the council’s deliberations last week. But Mr Quax has given an assurance, for next time. He says: “You and your organisation have our assurance that, if we [Mr Quax and Mrs Stewart] are re-elected, we will move to have a plan change introduced to remove the zoning on the seaward side of the Howick village. The mall differs from Botany and Sylvia Park in that most of the Plaza car parks are owned by Auckland Council and enforced by Auckland Transport. He was fined while moving stock into the new shop 11 weeks ago; even after explaining his position to the parking officer. His daughter Adele has been ticketed twice and he has no shortage of people sharing their stories in the shop. He talks of $300 tickets posted outside the shop, adding many are targeted for warrant of fitness or car registration infractions. Shoppers share their gripes too. “One customer said ‘you might have some great stuff in your shop but we’re not coming back’.”

He even admits to rubbing out the times chalked onto tyres by parking personnel. Handing out tickets when there could be as many as 100 empty car parking spaces is ridiculous, he says. “It’s like a police state ... it pisses me off, normal people being exploited. “It’s absolutely wrecking our businesses. I’ve talked to other businesses. We all pay our rates. They’re wrecking this mall.” Auckland Transport told the Times the car park has different restrictions - 180, 90 and 60 minutes. “This should be ample time for most shoppers and is similar to other shopping areas in Auckland,” AT said. “Since January 1 we have issued 641 time restriction notices about 20 a week.

“If management of the shops want to talk to Auckland Transport about enforcement, we would be happy to meet them.” Meanwhile Pakuranga Plaza’s landlord – Pakuranga Plaza Limited which is owned by GYP Properties – said from Singapore that the company had no direct involvement but expressed empathy for the shoppers. “Our team is concerned to hear about these issues and will engage with the authorities to understand if there’s anything the Plaza can do differently to prevent these incidences from re-occurring,” a spokesman said. Cancer Society Pre-loved Boutique goes yellow for Daffodil Day T

his Daffodil Day, Friday 26 August, will have special meaning for Golflands local Nikki Taylor as it marks the two year anniversary since her breast cancer diagnosis. As Nikki’s world started to crash down around her, Cancer Society stepped in to help her and her family at the time when she needed it the most.

“Before I was sick I didn’t realise how far Cancer Society’s reach was, or how they could help me,” said Nikki. “Even in our local community, Cancer Society has its Pre-loved Boutique in Howick Village which is another way they are giving back and helping people with cancer.” Cancer Society Pre-loved Boutique - the first for Cancer Society Auckland Northland - was set up over a year ago to support the range of services Cancer Society provides. Specialising in good quality clothing and homewares, sales from the boutique help to fund patient transport, accommodation, counselling, a free information helpline, community nurses and cancer research. Each year over 22,000 New Zealanders like Nikki will hear the words “you’ve got cancer”. For many people a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, which is why Cancer Society’s support is so vital. In support of Daffodil Day and people currently facing cancer, the Pre-loved Boutique will be holding in-store events and giveaways

She writes: “The object on Eastern beach was gone by Monday (August 8). I hope that there is a lesson to be learned here and, being a true animal lover, dogs will be dogs. Put them on the lead and let them have a sniff first and ask if it is ok

Is it true then? This country is really going to pot? According to the Herald headlines this morning (August 15), two-thirds of Kiwis want cannabis legalised. Can this be true? Who did they poll? Does no-one read, or remember the numerous reports/ studies which show the lasting harm caused by smoking pot and the fact that it opens the door to stronger drugs? Are we not already fighting a losing battle to P which is devastating so many lives and damaging so much property. Never mind that someone else always has to pay the cost. How many times do we hear the excuse of ‘drug inducement’ as a reason for crime? Does that change anything or compensate the innocent victims? It seems that New Zealand is a soft nation which would rather go with the flow. It gives in when challenged by trouble. It puts its head in the proverbial sand and says, “I see nothing. I cannot believe the council has made the hearing for the new dog beach laws at 10.30am on Tuesday August 23, when the majority of dog owners will be at work, a disgusting and cunning move on behalf of the council. Overall the rules as they stand are extremely satisfactory. We pay huge rates, living in Howick so how can those councillors dictate the dog laws when the majority of them are probably non-dog owners. It would be very interesting to know. While living in Howick and being able to walk our dogs to the beach, we do not want to have to get in our vehicle to take our dog to a park. End of WWll in the Pacific My writing is regarding Japan’s continual silence on the past Asia-Pacific war. I am the president of the EJOS here in New Zealand. EJOS = Ex Japanese PoW’s in the former Dutch-East-Indies living New Zealand. In 1945 Seventy one years ago, the former Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced in a radio address that the country would surrender to the Allies, marking the end of WWll in the Pacific. On August 15 2015 we commemorated the end of WWII in the Pacific 71 yrs ago. The PoW Camps in the former DutchEast-Indies opened their gates but the extremists were on the rampage. Anybody looking European was not safe. To stay within the camp compound was the safest place and ironically our former enemy, the Jap, now had to protect us. The Jap starved us close to death but now we received food. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved many of us. My mum told me that she would not have survived another three months. Women and men were in different camps and now a search for family members was on. Transport to depart the country was organised and many of us returned to the Netherlands by ship. Travelling to the harbour was treacherous. Often convoys were attacked by extremists. Then there is the issue of comfort women. It is estimated that the Japanese Imperial Army captured and coerced around 200,000 women, mainly from Korea, Philippines, Dutch-East-Indies and China, into providing sexual services before and during the war. Last November a monument in honour of them was unveiled in Seoul opposite the Japanese Embassy and in

The monuments are a memorial to women from Korea and other countries, who were forced into sex slavery by Japanese soldiers during World War II. Your Excellency, Prime Minister Abe, 71 years after the end of the war, an unequivocal apology by the Diet, the Japanese government, is long overdue. The whole world will applaud the official acknowledgement of Japan’s wrongs in the Asia-Pacific war. This petition is about all the opportunities Japan was given to resurrect and to reconcile

its war past. During WWII Japan committed probably the most massive, unimaginably inhumane and ruthless atrocities in the history of mankind, and yet even after 71 years, she is still trying to whitewash that part of history. An official apology and compensation for the victims will give the survivors peace of mind. Japan has argued that all matters related to reparations were settled in the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty; but a close reading of the Treaty shows that the issue was merely postponed until the Japanese economy, still devastated by war, had the ability to make good on any restitution assigned them. Such an excuse is laughable today. Japan ranks as one of the world’s wealthiest countries. The Nazi soldiers would finish doing a head count to ensure no one had escaped and then start counting again, saying they may have made a mistake.” Bob has practised law in Auckland for the last 60 years. He studied at Howick District School (now Howick Intermediate) with classmate Archie Somerville who bequeathed the land that Somerville Intermediate now stands on to the Ministry of Education. ith the available Auckland region housing inventory still at an historic low of less than 10 weeks supply, volume sales in Eastern Beaches are at a five-year low, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. Dwelling numbers sold in Eastern Beaches are down 22 per cent in July to 151 from 193 the same time last year and are the lowest compared with the previous July low of 164 in 2012. However, the Eastern Beaches median price continues to rise, reaching $1.1 million in July compared with $940,000 the same time last year. Days to sell remain fairly static at 33 compared with 32 the same time last year. Over the past 10 years the average number of days to sell in Auckland during July has been 34 days. Million dollar plus homes continue to show the largest increase in volume sales nationally, up 12 per cent to 1015 in July compared with 909 the same time last year. REINZ spokesman Bryan Thomson says sales volumes remain below previous periods as the continued shortage of supply has an impact on buyer choice. “We will watch market reaction with interest as the expected increase in listing numbers during the spring and summer selling period becomes available and the market assesses the impact of the recently-announced LVR (loan to value ratio) rule change, the approval or otherwise of the Auckland Unitary Plan and a Reserve Bank rate cut.” Significant variations in asking prices across the country paint an interesting

A stylish design for a new kitchen by Jag Kitchens has resulted in a young couple in Mt Wellington totally transforming their entire home. A small space has been used creatively to make a versatile and smart kitchen/ living area, which is great for entertaining.

A first for a Jag Kitchens design is the installation of a Sweepovac, a foot level vacuum cleaner built into the toe kick space under the kitchen cabinets. Sweep up your kitchen dirt and tap the button with your foot to have it efficiently vacuumed away.

“We were very, very impressed with the overall service including the design work, costing, timing and the installation. It’s made our house look brand new,” Kelly says. The Bleakley home, which is about six-years-old, is a Lockwood design and originally the kitchen and living area were divided by a wall.

ing the equity in their property to fund renovations rather than selling to upgrade. “Increasingly we are witnessing unconditional offers being made in order to secure a property without completing adequate due diligence. This behaviour is driven by a growing fear of missing out which is rife across the market.” Jonno Ingerson, CoreLogic NZ head of research says the Auckland Unitary Plan allows for much more high density housing and extends the limits of Auckland. But the constraint will be how quickly these houses can be built. “Current demand for building is already putting significant pressure on the building industry and stories are emerging of quality suffering as a

consequence in some cases,” he says. “We are currently building just over 8000 dwellings a year. In order to meet the new plan we would need to build 13,000 dwellings for the next 30 years. That’s going to take quite some effort.” In the short term, Mr Ingerson says, if the plan is ratified by Auckland Council, there would be certainty about which properties are able to be developed into apartments or townhouses, and where the urban limits will be extended. “That could mean that properties capable of being developed for high density could either dramatically increase their value as developers swoop in or the sheer number now available could mean their price drops. I suspect the former.”

Dubbed the ‘baddest and the best’ show in town, Harlequin Musical Theatre’s production of Bad Girls is a funny and entertaining rendition of the popular television drama of the same name. The British musical is based on characters from the awardwinning TV show following the love story that develops between an idealistic prison Wing Governor, Helen Stewart played by Sharon Hewlett, and a charismatic inmate, Nikki Wade played by Chantel Wilson, at the fictional HMP Larkhall. David Burchall, playing the entrenched old-guard prison officer, Jim Fenner, soon sends disgust through the audience when it’s discovered that he’s been taking advantage of privileges which causes a naive inmate to take her life. All the inmates know Jim is to blame and won’t let it rest until he is found out for his wrong-doings. Lindsey Brown plays the hard-as-nails inmate Shell Dockley who co-operates in letting Jim have his wicked way with cameras installed in her cell catching him in the act. It’s very much an adultsonly production with occasional bad language and sexual innuendo. But there’s plenty of toe tapping with some neat quirky songs performed by a cast full of wonderful voices. Standing out are Julie Trigger and Angela Gill playing the two inmates, Julie Saunders and Julie Johnston respectively, while Nefertiti Teare, playing inmate Denny Blood, powers out her part. Veteran Howick actor Reeva Chapman adds that extra element of humour, adeptly portraying the long-time elderly inmate Noreen Biggs. With a simple set the production flows well, enhanced by the musical talents of the

Getting on top of weeds

he Howick Local Board has allocated $47,000 towards the eradication of invasive plant species as it attempts to ramp up a public awareness campaign to control the pests. The two main threats in the area are Rhamnus and moth plant – fast spreading weeds that smother gardens and native plants. Howick Local Board’s John Spiller told the Times that a public awareness campaign in March this year led to people quickly learning to identify the two weed pest species. But the hard work is not done yet, he said. While Rhamnus is largely confined to Bucklands Beach Peninsula, moth plant spreads easily from winddispersed seeds and is visible throughout the Howick Ward. Mr Spiller said he was approached by several people in the community following the March campaign and has since been involved in the removal of moth plant at sites around Howick. Meanwhile, plenty of others have removed the pest species themselves and this was shown at a successful weed swap day held earlier this year by Auckland Council. “The response was far in excess of the previous year’s

weed swap day with three large skip bins being filled with Rhamnus, moth plant and some other weeds that were handed in,” Mr Spiller said. The weeds were exchanged for native trees. The next weed swap event is in March 2017 and will be publicised closer to the time. Mr Spiller said the extra funding, announced last month, will go towards weed control in two reserves as well as the ongoing community education campaign. The $47,000 was allocated as part of the board’s Infrastructure and Environmental Services works programme for 2016/17. About $12,000 will go towards community awareness and the rest will be

spent on weed control in the Mangemangeroa Reserve between Hayley Lane and the Mangemangeroa Bridge and programmes at both Cockle Bay and Mellons Bay. On top of the $47,000, the Howick Local Board has also allocated $10,000 towards new native plantings on the Howick Golf Club course at Musick Point. Mr Spiller said this is because Musick Point is a prominent headland with significant potential to improve biodiversity. “This is a good fit in that there has recently been intensive eradication of Rhamnus in this area with contractors even abseiling down the cliff faces to eliminate instances of the prob-

Aussie tour success for Pakuranga College First XV The Pakuranga College 1st XV had a successful overseas tour last month, winning the Gold Coast Rugby Carnival in Australia. The boys were undefeated in all seven of their under-18 A Grade matches. They overcame schools from New Zealand, England and Australia and played Stratford High School in the final. The final was a tough test for both undefeated Kiwi teams, with the game finishing in a 6-6 draw. Officials named Pakuranga College the winner, however, as tournament rules state that in the event of a tie, the team that has scored the most tries wins. With Pakuranga scoring the only try in the final, they were named 2016 champions. The player of the tournament for Pakuranga College was Tevita Latu.

BMX on a roll at Lloyd Elsmore Park When the BMX Mountain Raiders Club moved to Lloyd Elsmore in 2012, no one could have predicted how successful it would become in just four years. Membership has grown from 80 to 200 members and the east Auckland club is now the biggest in New Zealand. But now Friday club nights attract up to 200 riders and with spectators on top of that, the atmosphere around the newly built track is electric. With its rapid growth, the BMX Mountain Raiders Club is now one to watch at national championships each year. Five years ago it had five riders at nationals, this year it had 59. Three national titles were won in 2016, there were six podium finishes

and 20 top eight finalists.The club has also been awarded hosting rights for the 2018 BMX New Zealand North Island Titles, its first major event. The competition, held in October, will see more than 700 riders and about 2000 spectators congregate on Lloyd Elsmore Park. This is great news for the club and its members, 60 per cent of which are aged 10 and under. Riders can start from the age of three on “strider” bikes and kids can compete at national and international competitions from the age of five. There is free coaching for all and parents can also get involved. There were 30 mums and dads racing in the 30+ Masters age group this year. But despite the number of members increasing significantly over the past four years, the number of volunteers at the club has stayed the same.

Club president Kevin Jago is encouraging parents to put their hands up and help out. “The membership growth means more volunteers are needed to help run the club,” he said. “I want to encourage more parents to step forward, get involved, and be part of the growth of an exciting sport.” He also wanted to thank the loyal sponsors of the club – Howick Local Board, Auckland Council, Counties Manukau Sport, NZCT, Infinity Foundation and Cycle Express. Mr Jago said they would love to welcome more members before the new season starts on September 30. BMX has been an Olympic sport since 2008 and rider Trent Jones is currently in Rio representing New Zealand – plenty of inspiration for young Kiwi up-and-comers. And for those that have never rid-

den before, there is a CM Sport holiday programme coming up at the Lloyd Elsmore track. It is for kids aged between nine and 13 and runs from September 26-29 with two time slots available each day – 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm. The programme is free and as long as the kids are confident at riding a bike, they are more than welcome at these “have a go” days. They include safety, skills and some ride time, with BMX bikes,

Jacob Hollobon has been named Auckland College Rugby League’s “Most Valuable Player” for the under 85kg division. The Pakuranga College student said he was “ecstatic” with the award, which is determined by Man of the Match points allocated for each game by Auckland Rugby League officials. Jacob received 11 points over four games. He lives in Bucklands Beach and plays for Pakuranga College and the Howick Hornets Rugby League Club. The year 9 student will be trialling for the Counties Manukau Stingrays later this month. “It was truly wonderful to deliver that result for them after all they, as mostly parents and family, had sacrificed for us.” After the competition was over, Connor had a chance to ride some Swiss mountains – another highlight of the trip for him. “We just don’t get that type of mountain climbing opportunity in Auckland,” he said. The year 13 student is now focusing on his school work and catching up before final exams. “But next year I will be racing for Team Skoda and I will be focusing on doing the big road events like The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge and the Elite Road Nationals.” He has been with Skoda Racing since he was 14. “They have had a very positive effect on my development as a rider and have always been very supportive celebrating my successes whether on the road or the track,” he said. Connor also races for his Counties Manukau club and Saint Kentigern College – both of which have great cycling programmes, he said. He said he would not have achieved any success without all of the parents and teachers that volunteer to coach and “stand in the rain like human road cones every weekend”. Connor also credited the guidance of the Auckland Track Cycling Club and its volunteers for his success.

ocal cyclist Connor Brown has won gold at the 2016 Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Switzerland, smashing a world record in the process. The 18-year-old was part of the four-person New Zealand team that competed in the U19 Men’s Team Pursuit at the World Champs last month. The race is 4km with a team on each side of the track. Connor, a student at Saint Kentigern College, qualified for the New Zealand Junior Men’s

Endurance Squad and the World Championships after a string of consistent results at the Oceania Championships and the New Zealand National Championships. He said the build up for the World Championships was a long one and started with just over a week of racing in Australia, countless hours of training at the Avantidrome in Cambridge, and finally travelling to Switzerland 10 days before competition to get used to the climate and unusual 200m track. This preparation was all worth it when New Zealand took to the

track in Aigle, Switzerland and qualified fastest, putting them up against Australia in the quarterfinals. The Kiwis blew away their trans-Tasman rivals, lapping them and winning by such a large margin that they automatically qualified for the finals. This meant they faced Denmark in the gold medal race and the Danes had been consistently fast. But not quick enough. “The Danes went out fast and were ahead at the 1km mark but we stuck to our plan and by the second kilometre we were ahead and just pulled away to win the

race and break the record by over a second,” Connor said. New Zealand crossed the finish line in 4:01.409 – beating the previous world record of 4.02.632, set by Australia in Moscow in 2011. Connor said it was “absolutely amazing” to represent New Zealand at the World Championships. “Ever since I started cycling I dreamt that one day I would be able to race in this event. “I remember getting my first track bike from the Manukau Velodrome on loan for a season as a 14-year-old and dreaming that maybe I could get a jersey

with a fern on it.” He said he was extremely nervous before the race with an expectation to perform hanging over him. “But I tried to remain focused on each step of the race,” Connor said. “I focused on having a good start then recovering in the wheels and delivering my teammates on pace.” He said the New Zealand supporters in the stands were “fantastic”. “They all had supporters shirts on, flags waving and screaming for us down the back straight. ➤ Turn to Page 27
