UPERCITY residents will be breathing a sigh of relief that they can continue to use their open fires and older wood-burners this winter. A hue and cry erupted last year when Auckland Council considered an Air Quality Bylaw to tackle the city’s pollution, placing the blame on the humble home open fire place, along with older (pre-2005) woodburners. Now the council’s regulatory and bylaws committee has agreed that Aucklanders can continue to keep the home fires burning and it will instead continue to educate residents on the use of clean fuel. In particular it’s counting on people refraining from using tanalised and wet timber and coal as a major
way to improve Auckland’s air quality. Since last October the council has been working with the Government to establish the nature and scale of air pollution in Auckland. Also, a report from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has recommended that air quality regulations be reviewed because of recent scientific advances. This includes the need to measure small particulate matter in the air that is more harmful to human health in the long term. As a result council staff will develop options for the committee to consider in June. Calum Penrose, the committee’s chairman, says until Aucklanders can be given certainty on air quality regulations and what it may mean for domestic fires, the council will encourage people to use clean
sources of home heating, including burning clean wood. “The council’s restrictions on the burning of rubbish, wet wood, tantalised timber and high sulphur coal remain in effect,” he says. “These have been in place since 2008 and have contributed to the steady improvement of the quality of Auckland’s air. Until the council is satisfied that any additional measures are appropriate for Auckland and are a reasonable response to the national regulations, no further measures will be introduced.” ACT Party leader, David Seymour says the most important part of The World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines is for long-term finer particulate exposure, yet the guideline for New Zealand’s standard for particulate matter is the larger particles.
“We monitor the wrong thing,” he says. Auckland’s diesel vehicle emissions are a substantial source of particulate, with a consistently large influence year-round, he says. “Interestingly, the efficiency of petrol vehicles means they barely register.” Scepticism about health impacts, he says, is entirely warranted. “This brings us back to the council obsession with eliminating the remaining domestic fire places in Auckland. “The council could always consider strategies to reduce diesel emissions. FFENDERS arrested by Howick Police will be processed at Howick police station from next Monday. Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Richards says until now all prisoners from the top half of Counties Manukau police district have
had to be taken to Otahuhu to be fingerprinted, photographed and questioned but that is about to change. Otahuhu watchhouse will close on Monday morning and Howick will have its own processing facilities.
Mr Richards says the change will cut down processing time for his staff and keep more cars and staff in Howick instead of being tied up transporting prisoners to other stations. He says violent offenders or prisoners not eligible for bail will
be transferred to Papakura but all others will be processed and bailed directly from Howick. Many minor offenders, such as shoplifters, are bailable by right and Mr Richards says, in many cases his officers should be able to process them in less than an

UDGING an art award is always selective, according to well-respected art judge Warwick Brown. So he says he was expecting some flak when he chose a photograph as the winner of the ninth Estuary Art Awards this year. Out of close to 70 entries, Mr Brown chose 35 finalists and, because of the calibre, opted to add four merit awards. This Saturday art lovers will get an opportunity to debate the pros and cons of whether anyone can “take a happy snap� or hear him explain why the winning photograph works at Howick’s Creative Centre. Jesse Dunstan’s photo print On Reflection, Mr Brown says, works because of its connection with New Zealand’s most revered artist, Colin McCahon. “This young man had heard about McCahon but had never

read his book. His work is a good intuitive response to the scene,� he says. The young kayaker took the photograph from under a pier on the Tamaki Estuary, using the pier forms as a focus in reference to McCahon’s work. “It is a wonderful combination of the natural and manmade world,� Mr Brown says. “To get the ripples on the surface we would have thought he chucked in some pebbles. “But he said ‘no’, he was under a structure and the ripples were caused by the water dripping from that into the estuary. There was no manipulation.� A surprising revelation is that the photograph is not black and white, but subtly coloured leading to a hint of blue in the top corner, possibly pointing to some hope for the estuary, says Balamohan Shingade, the centre’s curator and visual arts manager.

Although not a south-eastern resident, Mr Brown says he’s seen the estuary go from “not too bad to dreadful and it’s now coming back a bit�. “I’m an old-time conservationist and the issue about clean water and protecting the environment is important to me.� He views the second place winner, Sharon Terrizzi’s earthenware sculpture Post-Mimbres as an object piece, mimicking the lowly sea-squirt in a lighthearted ceramic incarnation. “The creature is terribly vulnerable, because it’s a living form but not a fish�, he says. “So it can’t get out of the pollution. It’s a filter-feeding creature and depends on clean water to
survive. It’s been depicted in a modern form and ticks the art and theme boxes very well.� Similarly, one of the merit awards, Mandy Hague’s Orison depicts the feet of the estuarine strider the pukeko, a work Mr Shingade describes as depicting “the troublesome aspects of the estuary�. While the bird is dead, the image depicts the legs and feet in a praying or pleading position, sending a message through the visual impact. Howick Creative Centre’s Estuary Art Awards 2015 exhibition is on until April 24. and from that monitoring we get an indication of the breeding success in the wider population. “This year’s results are dismal with no fledging success at all and, of even greater concern, signs that adult birds have been lost,� she says. Monitoring this season was expanded to observe five additional pairs that have settled outside the managed area. “The growth of the kokako population in the KMA over the last 20 years has seen birds move outside
the pest-controlled area. “Unfortunately, four of the five pairs we’ve been following outside the KMA appear to be missing altogether,� she says. The increase in pest numbers in the Hunua Ranges has prompted Auckland Council to change its approach to pest management in the wider ranges area. Marine conservation group turns to crowd funding Projects range from coral farming to an underwater museum
A
former Howick man now based in Cambodia has taken to crowd-funding to raise cash for marine conservation. James Mostert, 36, has lived in Cambodia and Malaysia for around five years now. About two years ago he started a marine conservation non-governmental organization (NGO) with a local Cambodian friend Pierre Kann called Save Cambodian Marine Life. Their project is based off the coast of Sihanoukville on an island called Koh Rong Samloem in a local Khmer fishing village. There are six main projects – coral farming, electro reef, seahorse & reef surveys, an underwater war museum, teaching English and organic/hydroponic farming. “We involve ourselves in the local community as much as we can as well,” says Mostert. “Our most interesting projects however are the coral farming, electro reef and underwater war museum. “We can only hope that their current support will grow into something that will help us to be more sustainable and increase the size of our projects,” he says. The biggest challenge when working in marine conservation is gaining support, Mostert says, both locally and financially. “We are a non-profit organisation, but we still need money to keep the project alive. “So we take on paying volunteers that help to sustain the project,” he says. “We are currently also running a crowd funding project on IndieGogo.com to raise money to cre-
ate more electro reef systems.” His group is trying to raise USD$15,000 ($19,888) which will be enough to build one or two more electro reefs depending on their size. “There is still a lot of illegal and destructive fishing going on in Cambodia such as dynamite fishing, trawling and cyaniding, so this is part of the reason why we are creating coral farms and our electro reefs to help to regenerate damaged reefs and to create new homes for marine species where their previous home has been destroyed. Electro reefs utilise a method that was discovered by Professor Wolf Hilbertz called mineral accretion which is uses a low voltage electric current connected to metal objects which then draws the minerals directly from the seawater to attach to the structure. “Because these minerals are so close to what the reef is made from, corals grow on it very easily and faster than normal because of the current going through it,” says Mostert. “So you can build artificial reefs up to three times faster than you would on natural artificial reefs. Mostert, who went Mellons Bay Primary, Buckland Beach Intermediate and then Macleans College, is a Padi scuba dive instructor and has now become a Padi staff instructor. He intends becoming a Padi course director – an instructor trainer. “I am also a reef check ecodiver instructor so that I can teach people on how to do marine reef surveying utilising the reef check methodology.”

News bites Missing man located safe A man who went missing in the Howick area has been found. Huang Dai was found at around 4.30pm on Friday in the Bucklands Beach area after a member of the public who had seen an item in the media saw him and phoned police. He had been missing since Thursday afternoon. Police said Mr Huang appeared to be in good health and was reunited with his family. “This is a great outcome. We’re very grateful to the person who saw Mr Huang and called us, thanks also to the media for the assistance, and the public for their vigilance” says Inspector Shawn Rutene, Counties Manukau Police. Aged 59, Mr Huang was reported missing at about 3pm on Thursday from his Udall Place address.
More than 27,000 have say Auckland Council’s 10-year budget consultation received a record 27,353 written submissions, with the majority of Aucklanders opting to support the advanced transport network. In addition to the written submissions, there were 1354 pieces of feedback via social media and more than 1400 Aucklanders attended a Have Your Say event. The previous Long Term Plan consultation received 10,084 submissions. The consultation saw Aucklanders provide feedback on a number of issues including the levels of investment in the region over the next decade and what council needs to do to fix the region’s transport problems. Figures show that 50 per cent opted for the advanced transport network and 29 per cent supported the basic transport plan. On the question of funding the transport options, 34 per cent supported motorway tolls, while 27 per cent favoured a fuel tax and rates rises.
Fuel prices ebb and flow After climbing 16 cents per litre during February, petrol prices continued to rise during March before falling later in the month. They initially rose 4 cents per litre before falling 4 cents to end the month on $1.92 per litre for 91 octane at most outlets. Diesel prices fell 2 cents in March to $1.20 per litre in the main centres. “Despite the increases of the last few months, retail prices are still the lowest in over four years,” says AA PetrolWatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale. “Since mid-January, the commodity price for petrol has risen nearly 30 per cent, or US$16 a barrel, while the New Zealand dollar has fallen nearly 4 cents against the US dollar. At the same time, the commodity price for diesel has risen US$9 a barrel. In that time, petrol pump prices have increased 20 cents a litre, with diesel up 13 cents per litre,” Mr Stockdale added.

Fresh from an afternoon concert at Pakuranga Park Village in March, it is now holding rehearsals for its first concert at St Andrew’s Church Centre at 11 Vincent St, Howick. The Big Band Aid, a fundraising concert for the Red Cross NZ Tropical Cyclone Pam Appeal, features St Andrew’s Big Band & special guests the George Bonner Quartet. It is on Saturday May 16 at 7.30pm. COMPLEX thesis measuring the effectiveness of currency trading systems has achieved top marks and an international award for a Howick financial trader. Adam Cox was awarded the highest mark (94 per cent) for his research paper completed as part of the Master’s programme from the International Federation of Technical Analysts (IFTA), a global organisation of market analysis societies and associations based in the USA. The icing on the cake came in February when he became the first New Zealander to receive the John Brooks Memorial Award for the best MFTA research paper written in 2014. The title of his thesis was “Testing the effectiveness of multivariate wavelet de-noising for intra-day trading systems: A New Zealand dollar study”. Translated into layman’s terms, the thesis was about measuring the effectiveness of trading systems for currencies, particularly the New Zealand dollar, Mr Cox says. He undertook the laborious task of sampling New Zealand-US dollar intra-day currency returns at 10-minute intervals. Then he had to extract noise out of the data, called de-noising. He used a variety of tools, such as MATLAB, a scientific system used for numerical computing. It was followed by compiling spread sheets of economic tests and comparisons. The result was a 120page research document. “I’ve explored three trading systems published by different authors in books and promising the earth,” he says. “I tested the raw data and de-noised it to find

whether they worked. One failed badly. “It leads you to wonder about adding complexity to something that doesn’t necessarily lead to a better result.” Mr Cox was born and brought up in Howick, attending Cockle
Bay Primary and St Kentigern College. He originally studied accounting at university, “but it was so boring, it didn’t answer questions in a real world”, he says. “We were into the new era of mergers and acquisitions, the days
of companies like Fay Richwhite which reflected how the world really works.” So he cross-credited his accountancy work to a Master of Finance degree at Massey University. A career in banking, finance and investment management in Australia followed. When he returned to Howick 10 years ago he established Prime Consulting Services. The work included designing and project managing one of New Zealand’s fund remediation projects which involved winding up and consolidating more than 65 funds for TOWER. Over the time he was involved with managing more than $20 billion in funds under management. These days he is concentrating on proprietary trading, which involves trading stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities, their derivatives or other financial instruments on his own behalf rather than using depositors’ money. He’s investigating establishing partners in Singapore, Chicago and Sydney to take advantage of the different time zones so that he can closely monitor currency rates and economic releases that may affect markets. But Howick is where he prefers to be based. “The [central Auckland] CBD is too expensive and there is no point being based there when we work on a client’s site or create intellectual property,” he says. “Howick has become a funky culture over the last eight years and being in the CBD doesn’t solve problems. “It’s as easy to jump on a plane to Wellington going through Manukau rather than battling peak-hour traffic to get home through Hobson Street.”

Melanoma funds Half Moon Bay musician Jesse Wilde has just jet-skied the East Coast of the North Island to raise funds for the Melanoma Foundation. He and 19 other jet skiers travelled hundreds of kilometres in the seven 2015 Yamaha Ski-NZ event to raise funds for the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand. Their efforts raised more than $50,000 and created awareness for prevention as well as cure. The cause is dear to his heart as his own mother survived a malignant melanoma some years ago. Jesse donates 10 per cent of his earnings to charity. He and his wife, TV presenter Cath Vincent, scooped the top award at the Ski-NZ awards night; the Elizabeth Swinney ‘Spirit’ Award which is granted to the persons who most contribute to the overall spirit of the event.

In their father’s footsteps Trio off to Gallipoli to honour father’s memory By Chris Harrowell

HREE proud siblings will soon embark on the journey of a lifetime to a former war zone in honour of their father’s military service. Sisters Heather Letfus and Andrina Wickers, with their brother James Brownlie and his son, will travel to the Gallipoli Peninsula for this year’s Anzac Day centenary commemorations. The Sunnyhills relatives secured ballots from the New Zealand Government to attend the ceremony in Turkey on April 25. Their father, John Brownlie, served as a private in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force from August, 1914, to October, 1916, during World War I. They’re paying for their airfares and accommodation in Turkey, but the ballots guarantee them spots at the Anzac Day service. Private Browlie served in Egypt, North Africa, and at Gallipoli. His active service casualty forms show he received bullet wounds to his hand and abdomen and a “gunshot wound” to his head on June 6, 1915. After returning home to New Zealand, the former soldier went on to have seven children. He studied law and commerce and worked as a cattle dealer. Private Brownlie was forced to learn how to write with his left hand after returning from his military service, due to being paralysed on the right-hand side of his body from injuries he’d sustained. “He walked with a limp,” says Mr Brownlie, of his father. “When you see the food and uniforms they had [at Gallipoli], it would have been apocalyptic.

“During combat they didn’t stop for things such as bayonet wounds.He had quite a few scars on his legs. “They then had to come back home and be normal.” Private Brownlie earned the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914-1915. He lost two of his brothers during World War I, during battles at the Somme, in France, and Palestine in the Middle East. Private Brownlie’s adult children have many fond memories of their father, who they say was active despite his injuries. They still have his gear bag and the hat he wore as part of his military uniform. Mrs Letfus says her father managed to climb a ladder to paint the family home, while Mr Brownlie remembers him being a handy shot on the family farm with his Winchester rifle. The three siblings say travelling to Gallipoli to see where he fought on behalf of his country will be special. “It will be a very emotional journey,” says Mrs Letfus. “It was amazing that he did that and then returned to New Zealand and brought up a family. “He never looked for any kudos.” Mrs Wickers says she expects the commemorations to be a moving experience. “To see where they fought, the size of the battlefield and what they experienced will give us a better insight into it. I don’t think we will ever totally understand what it was like though.” Veterans’ Affairs Minister Craig Foss says the Government is keen to ensure as many Kiwis as possible are given the opportunity to attend the commemorations.

HERE is an obvious sense of pride as principal Of Howick College, Iva Ropati speaks of the initiative by the Pasifika leaders of the college. Dressed in a traditional Samoan costume, along with other Pasifika students, he says the idea to collect funds for a ShelterBox sent to Vanuatu on April 2 was mooted by them on a recent college camp. “Our student leaders stepped up to the challenge and responded quickly. “This is their opportunity to demonstrate their citizenship,” says Mr Ropati as he arranges for a megaphone for the student leaders to collect funds on the sports field and around the college. “The Pasifika leaders of our school are going to collect $1500 today so that they can fund a shelter box to help some of those who have lost their homes in Vanuatu. “Values are important to us and it makes me feel good being a Samoan male,” he says about the reciprocity of giving. For those hit by the massive devastation of natural disasters, ShelterBoxes are the difference between life and death, hope and despair. The emergency supplies and shelter provisions are sent by an international disaster relief charity to those hit by natural calamities. David Owen, from the Rotary Club of Howick, and a ShelterBox representative, has worked with deputy principal Joseph Heays, also a Rotarian to orchestrate the collaborative effort. The ShelterBox response teams are highly trained volunteers ready to respond worldwide using Rotary clubs as partners. Owen has been in constant

A former police officer, Ms Fletcher is mother of a Howick College student Annabel Fletcher. “Currently, Sally is in Vanuatu setting up shelter,” says Owen. The compact green box weighs 50kg and contains basic necessities including a double-lined tent that can accommodate around 10 people and withstand extreme climatic conditions. The box contains a tool kit, water purification kits, stainless steel cooking utensils, a fire wood stove, mosquito nets, solar lights, thermal blankets, ground sheets and children’s activity packs to keep them occupied. Sixteen-year-old Jasmine Lan-
caster-Tasele and 15-year-old Tuli Fungavaka, both Pasifika student leaders of the college, say they feel empowered to help those who have lost their livelihood and homes after being hit by cyclone Pam. It’s an exercise in self-actualization and the power of being able to make a difference. “The equipment in the ShelterBox can help people up to six months. Getting ready with the collection cans the Pasifika students are going around the school to collect funds during morning tea and lunchtime. At press time students had collected $2300 that will go towards the emergency shelter in Vanuatu.

OST people go on a holiday to escape the daily grind. But in Vizina Rao’s case, she decided to take off on a life-changing trip that needs grit and guts to come face-to-face with the stark reality of life. Certainly not for the fainthearted, the Dannemora resident’s recent trip to Thailand and Cambodia with a motley group of 12, led by David Mayeda, Sociology lecturer from the University of Auckland was to study human trafďŹ cking. The purpose of the trip was to experience the country from a different perspective than the tourist brochures portray and to see ďŹ rsthand how serious the issue of sex trafďŹ cking has become. “We visited urban and rural areas of Thailand and saw how Destiny Rescue deals with the prevention, intervention and after care of those who have been sexually exploited,â€? says the 23-yearold professional who visited red light areas, bars as well as Rescue and Prevention homes. The two week trip was to study the horriďŹ c causes and effects of sex slavery. The ďŹ rst thing that struck Vizina as she spoke clandestinely to the young girls pushed into sex slavery was how vulnerable they were. While most of them
claimed to be teenagers, they were much younger. “They say they are 18 to 19-yearsold but it’s easy to see that they are not a day over 15 or 16.â€? Lisa Ho, New Zealand representative of Destiny Rescue, liaised with people in Thailand and Cambodia and arranged meetings for the group of 12 that wanted to make a difference, however small. The underlying trend they discovered was that most of the little girls begin as bar staff and are gradually enslaved into sex bondage. “Sadly, the onus is on the women who are responsible for the family debts that have to be paid off. “They are economically forced into the profession at a very early age,â€? says Vizina after learning from close quarters about the vicious cycle they are trapped in. While most of the meetings were in groups of two and three, there were times when things got dangerous. A disturbing sight she talks about is of the time the diverse team of social workers, professionals and students from New Zealand reached Kampong Cham in Cambodia. They were surprised to see a line-up of Range Rovers parked in a deserted part of the province. They later learnt that they belonged to government ofďŹ cials who were in the trade of buy-

ing virgins. Shockingly, some as young as three, four and ďŹ ve-yearolds are being bought at a very high price tag, she says. On a more positive note, the ethnically diverse group visited rescue homes and spent time with the rescued girls teaching them English and playing games with them. “Destiny Rescue is doing amazing work in terms of rescuing children and teaching them different life skills to help them have an alternate lifestyle if they choose to.â€? Whether interacting with the victims in a short span of two weeks was enough, she says: “It gave us a deep insight into a confronting subject that makes you both angry and sad.â€? They were told that it is healthy for the girls to interact with foreigners and learn different skills. “While we looked at female exploitation, young boys are being exploited in a big way too,â€? says Vizina who feels passionately about the cause. She says her long term goal is to stay in Cambodia and help educate young girls who are prey to sexual exploitation. Back from her trip, she has enrolled with an organisation that works to prevent domestic violence. “In my view, it’s mainly about gender inequality. And sadly that will take hundreds of years to eradicate,â€? she says.

Machine goes to Dargaville museum and unfortunately they had three machines from the Herald. “We then were informed that the Dargaville Museum would love to take the machine so off to Dargaville it was going.� The linotype machine, a typesetting machine for producing lines of words, was a machine that people did their printing apprenticeships on. “ It was a hugely skilful art,� says Reay. “These were in use for years and
it was the advent of computers that saw this craft and machine outdated.� Along with the machine going to Dargaville is a book dated 1951 that was given to the company by a tradesman who used this same machine. His name was Lionel Flashman – and his daughter Diane Andrew has been a typesetter with the Times for many years. “The craft lives on - just in a different format,� says Reay.

ERFECT weather drew the crowds at Whitford Pony Club’s Easter Ribbon Day on Monday, with record entries in almost all rings. There was a carnival atmosphere as visitors strolled in the picturesque grounds, cheering on riders. Easter bunnies and chicks were a popular theme in the Fancy Dress classes. The kids were delighted to receive free samples of horse ‘glitter gel’ to decorate their ponies during the lunch break. Secretary Maxine Butler-Gallie explained this was part of a new national sponsorship initiative in conjunction with the New Zealand Pony Club Association: “This is a new idea, to help junior riders have fun at grassroots events like Ribbon Days. N annual fun walk and run, which drew record numbers, has raised close to $5000 for Coastguard Howick. The Howick FunWalkRun on March 22 attracted 575 participants, overwhelming the organisers, particularly the high numbers of eager school children. The result was presentation of $4500 to Coastguard Howick whose volunteers pitched in with marshalling duties around the 8.5-kilometre course. Howick Rotary again spearheaded the event which started and finished at Stockade Hill. It

was initially set up to encourage everyone from young to old get out and walk to help stay fit. However the FunWalkRun now attracts serious runners, primary and intermediate school teams and family groups which can circumnavigate parts of Howick village seldom seen by the general public. This year the organising committee presented medals to all the children participating and the Crawford Medical group donated a cup for the primary and intermediate schools that crossed the line first. Colin Monk, of the Howick Rotary organising committee,
says although the event is not really a race, “this has added a lot more interest to the event and the challenges have already gone out for the teams in the 2016 FunWalkRun�. I LIVE at Minerva Court in Howick, a complex for the elderly in Gibraltar Street and I was at Bunnings last month on March 27 with my neighbour purchasing a marquee for a friendship gathering that we had organised for the next evening. We were dismayed to find we would have to pay a huge amount to have it delivered and my car is too tiny for it to go into. Up stepped a gentleman who had been standing behind us waiting his turn and promptly offered to follow us with said marquee kit and help us out. Ban parking
I AM a member of one of the local Crime Watch patrols and my fellow patrollers and I see this very real issue whenever we are patrolling around the schools in the area (Times, March 26). I personally have spoken to deputy principals at some of the schools and they confirm that “many parent/ caregivers are totally irresponsible” and take risks and create many “near accidents” every day. Letters from the schools and road patrols one-on-one advice/requests are ignored and even encounter abuse from the drivers in question. I and my fellow patrollers confirm the near misses due to illegal parking, speed turning into driveways, careless reversing and dangerous door opening just to mention a few problems. Based on my own personal experience many years ago, the answer lies in the total prohibiting of vehicles stopping within, say, 500 metres of a school, 30 minutes before school start time and 30 minutes after school finishes. (Such prohibiting would include all side roads in that same area). Lazy parents are training their children not to walk anywhere, because they themselves do not want to walk. David M Gordon

BLOOD MOON: Howick man Peter Booth captured these shots of the eclipse at the weekend. “We were very fortunate in Howick very early on Sunday morning to be able to witness the almost total eclipse of the moon,” he says. “The clouds mostly stayed away except for a few transparent ones near the end of the eclipse. As the eclipse started, there was a most amazing ring around the moon that extended a long way and a quick change of lenses to a wide angle was called for and with this I managed to capture it.

number of cars on our roads ever increasing? It would appear that the rail patronage increase is not even keeping up with car journeys? Maybe they are all Gold Card users using the trains who would not normally drive on the road anyway. Over the last 12 months it has taken longer and longer to travel across the city. Even on the weekends it takes far longer to travel across town or up and down the motorway than it did 12 months ago. The traffic on the motorway heading into the city is stationary as far back as Manukau and even sometimes further at 7am weekdays. This is crazy
I HAVE see someone double parked and blocking the road waiting for children to come out to the car making other vehicles cross the centre line at the end of school, the busiest time (School run nightmare for parents, Times, March 26). Crazy when no need as our school is so small. There are several other exits which are easy to access. You wonder what people are thinking don’t they realise that a child could die because they don’t want to walk or make their kids walk? I encourage my son to scooter which is safer than biking. I say create more walking school buses so parents could even drop off at a certain point and get their kids walking to school. Dianne Donaldson
EIGHT road deaths attributed to overseas drivers in the last month. It would be interesting to know how many Kiwis cause fatal accidents while driving in overseas countries? I am sure it would be in the news, and I cannot remember reading of such an incident. Are our overseas statistics as bad as those occurring on our roads? Are the foreign drivers involved in accidents on our roads poor drivers, or are our road conditions and signage inferior to those on roads in other countries. We look to the left for warning signs, most overseas drivers would look to the right, maybe that is the problem? Something is very wrong and the sooner the authorities do something about it the better. School parking
WITH regards school drop off zones. Parking problems are not confined to schools. The former Howick Community Board requested back in 2009 that parking controls should be applied at specific times in Cockle Bay Road on the bend near the private kindergarten. At pick-up and drop-off times, cars are regularly parked in these restricted zones with never a parking warden to be seen. The corner becomes quite cluttered such that buses have been seen to reverse back down the road! Maybe yellow no parking lines on this corner would help – as the no stopping periods are not observed. ONE are the days when students only learnt between 8:30am – 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Now, it’s about accessing learning 24/7, 365 day a year - as and when it suits them. The ‘asynchronous day’ at Pakuranga College was the first trial of how one can utilise the power of technology and the internet to provide anytime, anywhere learning The task was created by eLearning coordinator Allistair Williamson who created an entire website with the content, instructions and resources for the day. The theme was based around organising a major event. The Cricket World Cup was used to set the context, but it did not limit the students to this event. Input from maths, science, English and social sciences ensured that the task was firmly related to the curriculum and students were encouraged to make these links in their work. The task was student-centric and relied on the individual student to interpreting the task,
researching possible outcomes, and then producing a solution. The project-based design model provided lots of rich learning and skill development for students. “We received a wide range of presentations at the end of the day and the students used their creativity to deliver their solutions,” says deputy principal Billy Merchant. “Our role here at the college is to provide opportunities and learning tasks that challenge students to think outside of their comfort zone. We also try to make learning authentic and provide tasks that have meaning and a relevant context.” Mr Williamson, who orchestrated the day, says that the idea came from a concept facilitated at C3 – a high school-based in San Diego. “We saw this in 2014 when a group of six lead teachers from Pakuranga College visited seven Californian schools to source innovative methods of engaging students with modern day learning concepts,” he says. and found it fostered the concept of learning being accessible at any time, in any place, with students able to complete it at their own pace. “Being a BYOD (bring your own device) college, we believe that students need to understand that this way of accessing information is in line with many 21st century workplaces, where content can be retrieved and actioned from a range of locations,” he says. The idea behind the asynchronous learning was to link the content that students had covered in their core subjects over the first five weeks of school into one learning task. “The intention was to ensure that students were given the opportunity to interpret information and construct a presentation of their understanding in their choice of format – this meant that we received work using a range of presentation tools (i.e. video, Google SketchUp, Prezi, Go Animate, Google Slides, written reports, posters etc). We were really impressed with the quality of the student outcomes and will continue to promote the concept of accessible learning.”

Auckland is expected to accelerate while the rest of the main centres remain steady

HE latest monthly QV Residential Price Movement Index shows that nationwide residential property values for March jumped 7.7 per cent over the past year and 2.8 per cent over the past three months. This means they are now 21.3 per cent above the previous market peak of late 2007. When adjusted for inflation, the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 6.8% and values are now 3.7% above the 2007 peak. The Auckland market has increased 13.9% year on year, 4.6% over the past three months and 45.8% since 2007. When adjusted for inflation values are 13.0% over the past year and are 24.6% above the 2007 peak. “The rate of growth in Auckland is exceptionally strong while values are rising more slowly than they were this time last year in Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin,� QV National spokesperson Andrea Rush said. “Value increases are beginning to plateau in parts of the Christchurch market as the supply of new homes begins to meet the demand created by the earthquakes.� Values in Tauranga and Invercargill rose moderately, while the Hamilton, Wellington and Dunedin markets are quite flat. “The expectation is that Auckland will continue to accelerate while the rest of the main centres will remain steady with values either moderately increasing, staying flat or in some cases declining slightly.� Home values have continued to show rapid growth across the SuperCity in the first quarter of 2015.

Changes provide more support for families Additional support for families through an extension to Paid Parental Leave and an increase to the minimum wage came into effect last week. Paid Parental Leave extends from 14 to 16 weeks and by another two weeks next year, while further improvements to the scheme are also being progressed. The adult minimum wage will increase from $14.25 to $14.75 an hour and the starting-out and training hourly minimum wages will increase by 40 cents to $11.80 an hour. “These initiatives are good news for families and deliver on the Government’s commitment to helping families, but there’s more to come,� Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse says. “The Government has also confirmed a package of measures to further improve access to Paid Parental Leave. “These measures include extending eligibility to more workers and increasing the flexibility of the scheme to better reflect the diversity of modern work and family arrangements and make it easier for parents to stay connected to the workforce. “The Government is committed to helping children get a good start in life and that New Zealand’s parental leave

Add the chickpeas and leek to the parsnips. Cook until the leek is soft but not coloured. When the chorizo is nearly cooked add the chopped tomato and parsley. Cook until the tomato is brown but not too mushy. Season to taste. When the parsnip and leek

ew Zealand’s largest real estate company, Harcourts has welcomed changes to the KiwiSaver scheme for first home buyers that came into effect today, but would like to see more done to encourage development of all types of housing, particularly in Auckland. The KiwiSaver HomeStart grant, which replaces the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy, allows those on modest incomes – $120,000 for couples or $80,000 for individuals – to apply for a grant that can be used towards the purchase of a new or used home. The changes which took effect last week will allow eligible first home buyers purchasing a new home to apply for a grant that is double the amount available for the purchase of an existing home. The maximum grant available for individuals purchasing a new home is $10,000 and for couples $20,000. Harcourts CEO Hayden Duncan says that while the changes are a step in the right direction, it will remain difficult for Kiwis looking to buy their first home in the major centres. “It’s clear that the loan to value
restrictions have had an impact on first home buyers. Our client survey data indicates that first home buyers now make up a smaller share of the market – 21 per cent in 2014 compared to 26 per cent in 2013. “The changes to KiwiSaver are designed to entice first home buyers to purchase newly built apartments and houses in order to help stimulate further development of lower-cost housing. “However, the barrier to entry in Auckland especially, and to a lesser degree in Christchurch, remains the ability to save the 20 per cent home loan deposit required by most lenders. “With current house prices, it’s hard to see these changes having a significant impact on that,” says Mr Duncan. “It’s also important to remember that funds from KiwiSaver are only made available at settlement, so they cannot be used as part of the initial home deposit. “First home buyers still need to front up with the full deposit amount that is agreed with the vendor.” Under the changes to the KiwiSaver scheme, the house price limits for first home buyers
have been increased to $550,000 in Auckland, $450,000 in Wellington and Christchurch, and $350,000 for the rest of the country. Mr Duncan says that unless more affordable housing is built, and quickly, most first home buyers will remain priced out of the market. “Properties in Auckland under $550,000 are becoming increasingly difficult to come by and there are no indications that will change. “It’s very difficult to find good entry level housing,” he says. “Outside Auckland where housing is more affordable, we do expect the changes taking effect today to encourage first home buyer activity. “Regional New Zealand was hit hard by the LVR restrictions and we welcome any stimulus that can support first home buyers venturing into the property market,” says Mr Duncan. “Owning your own home is important to Kiwis. Property ownership provides the lifestyle, financial security, and stability that every family deserves.” Changes will help 90,000 young Kiwis into home ownership – see page 24.

HANGES to the KiwiSaver fund scheme are expected to help 90,000 young Kiwis into home ownership over the next five years. Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith says parliament’s passage of the Taxation (KiwiSaver HomeStart and Remedial Matters) Bill will allow eligible KiwiSaver members to access more of their KiwiSaver funds to buy their first home. Revenue Minister Todd McClay says the passage of the bill will extend the current KiwiSaver withdrawal rules for first home buyers so that eligible KiwiSaver members will be able to withdraw the annual member tax credit paid by the Government as well as their own contributions and those made by their employers. This means that eligible KiwiSaver members will have access to up to an extra $521 for each year they have contributed to the scheme to put towards the deposit on their first home. “Often the biggest challenge faced by prospective first home buyers is pulling together the deposit,� Mr McClay says. The Government’s $1000
kick-start is not included in the changes in order to keep the KiwiSaver member’s account open and active after the withdrawal of eligible funds. The bill implements one part of the Government’s new support package for first home buyers announced in August last year. The KiwiSaver HomeStart package, which came into effect this month (April 1) includes doubled support for first home buyers where they are buying a newly-built home. The house price caps are increased to $550,000 in Auckland. Eligibility for Welcome Home Loans is expanded by aligning the house price caps with the new KiwiSaver HomeStart grant. Dr Smith says the changes double the Government’s support for first home buyers from $217 million to $435 million over the next five years. It complements the Government’s other housing initiatives, including opening up new residential land, reducing tariffs on building materials, investing more in building skills and reducing compliance costs.

The Friends of the Auckland Botanic Gardens selects an artwork from each exhibition to become part
of the permanent collection. This acquisition will also be announced at the November 28 opening. Visitors can enjoy the Sculpture in the Gardens exhibition throughout summer. It runs from this November 29 to March 6 next year. Entry is free. Auckland Botanic Gardens is located just off the southern motorway in Manurewa. The gardens are spread over 64 hectares and feature more than 10,000 plants.

Piutau’s decision irks Hansen There is an element of hypocrisy in former Wales coach Steve Hansen’s disappointment in Charles Piutau’s decision to play overseas

TEVE Hansen’s comment that Charles Piutau’s decision to sign a $1 million a season contract to play for Ulster in 2016 and 2017 could cost him his chance to represent the All Blacks at this year’s World Cup is unfortunate. If he’s good enough he should get the job although it’s unlikely he would have commanded a spot in the starting XV ahead of fullback Israel Dagg and wings Julian Savea and Ben Smith. At 23, the 94kg Piutau is an explosive player who has served the Blues and All Blacks well and, like Smith and Cory Jane, can cover any of the back three positions with equal aplomb. That can also be said of rising stars Nehe Milner-Skudder and James Lowe who have produced electrifying form for the Hurricanes
and Chiefs respectively. With no guarantee of winning a World Cup spot against such ďŹ erce competition, Piutau’s decision to cement his ďŹ nancial future with Ulster is understandable, just as Hansen’s decision to coach Wales in the wake of Graham Henry was before each took their turn as chief All Black mentor. A fearless player possessing speed, balance and strength, Piutau will mature with experience provided he, along with former Pakuranga clubmate Malakai Fekitoa, complete their game by mastering a pass that puts teammates across for tries. Milner-Skudder in his debut season for the unbeaten Hurricanes has shown that he has that pass, plus the same explosive qualities. Lowe is also a big, strong attacker
Agnew’s Angle whose huge punt is an added bonus when he plays in his preferred fullback position rather than on the left wing. With Dan Carter battling to regain his ďŹ rst-choice ďŹ rst-ďŹ ve spot ahead of Aaron Cruden, Beauden Barrett and Colin Slade, Hansen has an abundance of talent to choose from. same next year with Carter, Nonu and Smith all indicating they will take up lucrative professional contracts abroad with Slade considering doing the same. Still, the ďŹ rst-ďŹ ve depth should remain strong, especially when one considers the potential of 19-year-old Damien McKenzie who played brilliantly there for the Chiefs before he moved to fullback to accommodate Cruden’s return. With a smart head on his lean shoulders, the elusive McKenzie has it all – a ďŹ ne pass, snappy step, copy book tackle and a good kicking game. However, with Cruden the Chief’s ďŹ rst-choice No 10, he might be well advised to transfer to the Blues who so badly need a player of his special skills. Meanwhile, the pivot combination
of Jamison Gibson-Park and Daniel Bowden did a ďŹ ne job in the Blues much improved 16-23 loss to the Chiefs and hopefully the team will offer a serious Eden Park challenge to the impressive Brumbies tomorrow night. The pair set the original record for the category in 2008 at 25 hours and 55 minutes, raising $25,000 for CCF in memory of a special young man. “A dear friend of ours, Michael, was 12 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer,” says Brett, 51. “He was incredibly brave for the 15 months before he passed away.” The proceeds from the first marathon squash match were initially going to be donated to Michael and his family for a Make a Wish-type fund. “He said, ‘no, I don’t want the money, I want you to give it all to CCF’, which had supported him,” says James. “For someone of that age to make a decision like that is incredible. The maturity he showed was well beyond his years.” The original record was broken two years later, and a few times since. It now sits at 33h and 8m. “Records are there to be broken, but we are motivated to get it back,” says Brett. “We’ve created something others have followed and generally they are also raising money for charity, so other causes are benefitting. “We’ve decided we want to bring it home to where it all started. “We are doing it on the anniver-

sary of seven years ago, which is quite special.” James, 23, says: “This isn’t about us, this isn’t about squash. This is about trying to increase awareness of child cancer so people know what these children and their families are going through and the strength they show. “We want to provide them with
strength as well as any funding we can get.” James is a former junior national representative and Brett plays at A grade level in interclub competitions. They also participate in long-distance running, cycling and multisport events, which should put them in good stead for the record attempt.

To prepare, they have been put through non-stop six-hour training sessions against multiple opponents, as well as high-intensity running and gym exercises. “On the day you don’t know what is going to start hurting,” says James. “Every toe blistered last time. “We want to beat it by three hours and make it difficult for other people
to break it again. We want to smash it.” Brett says: “As an old fella, I’m relying on my body thinking it has a history behind what it needs to do. “Gym work is important. We are probably going to hit the ball around 45,000 times each.” For every hour of continuous play they are allowed a five-minute break, which can be accumulated. To comply with Guinness’s criteria, the matches must also be scored and played within the rules of the game. “It becomes a mental challenge,” says Brett. “You just focus on the end result.” The world record attempt will start at 5am on Saturday and, all going to plan, will finish at 5pm on Sunday. Howick Squash Club will be open the entire time for people to come and support the duo, with activities planned for children and refreshments available. Michael’s family will also be courtside. “They’re thrilled that Michael will be remembered in this way,” says Brett. Child Cancer Foundation business development manager Liz Atkinson says the organisation is incredibly humbled by the effort and commitment that the Meyers, and all their supporters, are giving in support of its vital work. “We receive no direct government funding, so rely on the generosity of New Zealanders to support our work and enable us to provide our practical and meaningful assistance to families when they need it most,” says Liz. “We are looking forward to being part of this amazing challenge and encourage people to come along and support James and Brett.” Nearly $15,000 has been raised so far, donate at give.everydayhero. com/nz/squashworldrecord.

Sports bites Two wins from three FENCIBLES United’s premier men’s team is off to a promising start in Lotto Northern Region division two. In the opening round on March 28, Fencibles beat Oratia United 2-1 at Riverhills Park, with goals to Jayden Henry and Zane Christiansen. Over the Easter Weekend, Fencibles had a two-leg road trip, first to Te Atatu on Good Friday, then for one of the furthest away games in the NRFL at Whangarei to take on North Force on Monday. Against Te Atatu, Fencibles won 2-0, Christiansen netting both goals. North Force were unbeaten going into the second match of the weekend’s double-header, and maintained their winning form with a tight 1-0 victory. The results have Fencibles fourth on ladder. They face Onehunga-Mangere away this Saturday.
Schoolboys on Eden Park MACLEANS College rugby players have the opportunity to start their season where they hope to finish it. The school’s First XV is playing at Eden Park tomorrow in the curtainraiser for the Blues v Brumbies Super rugby match. Macleans is taking on Takapuna Grammar in a preseason fixture. Their campaign in Auckland’s 1B competition kicks off on May 2. The 1B final is usually held on Eden Park, so Macleans will be seeking to bookend their season at the famed ground. The match against Takapuna Grammar starts at 5.05pm, and will be broadcast on Sky’s rugby channel.

MAJOR milestone for Pakuranga United Rugby Club won’t be the elephant in the room for its premier team during this season. Pakuranga turns 50 this year, with anniversary celebrations planned for next month. The club’s premier team kicks off its Alan McEvoy Shield campaign this Saturday, and coach Pita Alatini is welcoming the extra significance of the landmark season. “We want to embrace that and really get stuck into it,” Alatini told the Times. “We’ve mentioned it right from the beginning. We feel it’s a big thing and want to have it in the back of our minds every game.” Alatini enters his third year in charge of the premiers with a markedly different line-up from last season. Senior players Gareth Arlidge, Ed Creedy and former captain Kirk Eveleigh have retired, while Caleb Hall, Namatahi Waa and David Adams have sought representative opportunities in Bay of Plenty, Northland and Counties Manukau respectively. Des Spooner and Jono Armstrong have also moved on, and David Moeakiola is unavailable due to study commitments. In their place are a number of players from within the club’s system, progressing from under-21s
to the top grade. “These guys provide excitement and also offer something for the future,” says Alatini. “The biggest test is how quickly they can adapt to the premier competition.

“We know as a young group, we are going to have to be smarter, quicker and fitter to challenge some of the bigger sides. “I have full confidence we’ll be there to challenge at the end.” The youngsters are bolstered
by a core of experienced players, including Dwayne Polaitavao, who returns from Tasman’s ITM Cup team and replaces Eveleigh as skipper. “Having Dwayne in the team has really added some quality leadership. He has been a huge gain for us this year.” Pakuranga faces Papatoetoe away in the first round of a new format which sees the 15 premier teams split into two pools. The two sides also met in the opening round of the Waka Nathan Challenge Cup preseason competition, won 32-12 by Papatoetoe, who went on to win the tournament. “They capitalised on some mistakes we made. “[Papatoetoe captain and halfback] Junior Poluleuligaga is vastly experienced, and their forward pack really runs off him. “The more he gets them going, the more they wind into the game. We have to front up in those areas and put pressure on those guys.” Pakuranga rounded out its preseason with wins over College Rifles (14-7) and Grammar TEC (21-7). “[Against College Rifles] we started off with a hiss and a roar and faded away at the end of the game.
