Meth ring busted A

rmed Offender’s Squads were used as a precautionary measure to gain entry into property in Botany as part of a massive national police operation targeting an alleged meth ring. Properties in East Tamaki and Botany were among numerous suburbs and towns raided last Thursday. A total of 18 people were arrested as part of a large-scale police operation against an alleged meth ring, police said. More than 30 search warrants were executed across greater Auckland, Northland, the Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas, as part of a major police operation against the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine or P.

Northland: Morewa, Kaikohe. Waikato: Pukeatua, Fairfield, Chartwell, Whatawhata. Bay of Plenty: Oropi, Taupo. Christchurch: Northwood, Clearwater. Armed Offenders members in a car in Auckland’s K Road. Thursday’s termination was part of a long-running investigation into an organised criminal group alleged to be responsible for a methamphetamine manufacture and supply ring. Five of the people alleged to be involved are members or associates of the Head Hunters gang. One of the search warrants was carried out at a tyre shop in Otahuhu where casino chips, cash and several high-end cars were found and seized. The search at the shop saw the rims of the hundreds of tyres in the shop removed. Hidden in one tyre was a bag of cash (estimated to contain tens of thousands of

dollars) and a kilo of ephedrine (used to make meth) and worth around $120,000. In a second tyre was another 2kg of ephedrine, worth around $240 000. “This is a huge find and goes to show the efforts that people go to when it comes to meth and the chemicals used to make it,” Detective Senior Sergeant Lloyd Schmid, Organised Crime said. “These drugs and money have been well-concealed and were hidden at the bottom of a pile of dozens of other tyres.” On Thursday afternoon 11 men and 4 women appeared in the Auckland District Court.

RSA calling for Poppy Day volunteers By MARIANNE KELLY The run-up to the annual Anzac Poppy Day is in full swing at Howick RSA and, as is the case every year, more volunteers will be welcomed to help spread the load. Jan Lawrence and the Poppy Day committee have been planning for April 15 since before Christmas. The campaign got underway last Monday (April 4) when boxes of poppies were delivered

to 36 schools throughout the Howick Ward. Some of the schools, Mrs Lawrence says, are planning special Anzac services at their final assemblies of the term which coincide with Poppy Day. For the 12th year Macleans College students will take poppy and collection boxes around businesses throughout the East Tamaki industrial area. And on Monday boxes of 100 poppies along with collection boxes will be dropped off

Every year the RSA establishes key collection points in shopping malls throughout the ward and it is here there can never be enough volunteers. alph Witten, a longtime local identity, has died. Mr Witten, who was named Howick Citizen of the Year in 2006, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 14 surrounded by family. His citation for the Citizen of the Year stated that he worked tirelessly for the Howick and surrounding communities for more than 50 years. Mr Witten served on the Howick Borough Council and Manukau City Council for 12 years. As councillor for the Otara ward, he introduced many initiatives to help various Maori and Pacific Island people. He established and was chair of the Kokako Lodge Trust which runs educational camps with the Auckland Regional Council at Hunua for children from low decile schools. “These outdoor camps offer challenging and unique opportunities to build self esteem through physical activity, the theory being it will give them a sense of success to take with them in to their studies and careers,” said Mr Witten in the citation. A Times report from March 2006 said: “The unassuming recipient said he is honoured by the accolade.”

During days on council he was involved in planning a revamp of Howick village, including constructing Fencible Drive.Mr Witten was a president of the Pakuranga Tennis Club and was a member of both Lions Club and Probus. The online guest book also notes that Mr Witten is brother-in-law of the late Nancy and Trevor King – another local businessman and community icon - and

uncle of Diane, Brett, Janice and Sheryn and their families. Duncan Stuart of Parnell wrote: “I only knew Ralph glancingly as the cool dad of Intermediate School classmate, Michelle (Shelley). The Witten tribe was fun, committed to the community, and somehow in 1968 a thoroughly modern family. “Coming to one of Shelley’s parties I recall Ralph

making us kids so welcome. That’s what impressed me: his egalitarian nature. amphetamine and participating in an organised criminal group. One man appeared in the Hamilton District Court on similar charges, and another on similar charges in the Rotorua District Court. A total of five firearms were found throughout the day, at various addresses where officers carried out the search warrants. Two clan labs were located at rural properties in the Bay of Plenty. Multiple vehicles, which now also include a Harley Davidson and a Chevrolet Camaro, have also been seized by the Police Asset Recovery Unit.

Several vehicles were seized from the Otahuhu address, including a highly-modified Nissan GTL Skyline and a 2015 Kawasaki motorbike. Bundles of cash, including US dollars, have also been found. A Haines Hunter boat, named “Licence to Thrill” has been seized from a storage unit in East Tamaki. Commissioner Mike Bush in his blog on Friday said the termination of Operation Bunk should leave nobody in any doubt that police are determined to disable and dismantle the gangs and groups responsible for the meth-

amphetamine trade. “Congratulations to the Auckland Organised Crime team and other staff involved in this operation,” he said. “Methamphetamine inflicts great harm on our communities. It destroys lives, ruins families, threatens the safety and wellbeing of communities and is often a major contributing factor in serious crimes. “This underlines our commitment to do everything we can to reduce the harm methamphetamine causes and ensure those who make and sell it are brought to justice and don’t profit from their trade in misery.”

the harsh reality is this factory is no longer sustainable due to the lack of scale and cost-competitiveness the facility and its products face in today’s global whiteware marketplace. “This factory would have closed much earlier, rather than experience a series of downsizings over recent years, if not for the loyalty and commitment of this team,” he said. Mr Broadhurst said Fisher & Paykel’s approach to this announcement reflects the history of its strong relationship with staff, and the commitments the company has made. “Staff and their union representatives have been kept up-to-date through numerous consultations since as early as 2007, when this outcome was first indicated. “As we have approached this day, affected staff has sought two things from the company: clarity about the future of the factory and no sudden closure. The company is honouring the promises we have given in both these respects.” Mr Broadhurst said that while the planned closure was sad for Fisher & Paykel because of its long history of

whiteware manufacturing. In future, upgraded models of some of these refrigeration products will be manufactured utilising existing capacity at Fisher & Paykel’s plant in Thailand and through the wider Haier group in China. Following Tuesday’s meeting, production was suspended for the day so that staff could be with their families. Mr Broadhurst said that over the coming weeks, staff and their unions would have the opportunity to give feedback on the closure plans, and staff would also receive any follow-up support needed. “We will look to redeploy as many people as possible within the organisation. We are committed to finding suitable alternative employment wherever possible, rather than have people leave through redundancy. As needed we will also be working with third parties, including government agencies, to provide support for staff and their families. “We will also be liaising with our external suppliers and retailers about how best to navigate this period of transition,” he said.

isher & Paykel Appliances has announced the closure of its East Tamaki factory and the loss of 186 jobs. The iconic Kiwi company briefed staff about the closure of its plant - which manufactures a range of small refrigeration products - on Tuesday afternoon. The closure is being attributed to lack of scale and cost-competitiveness. The company said in a media release the briefing follows a period of consultation with the unions representing factory staff, and further feedback on the closure process will be sought over the coming weeks. The factory currently operates four days a week and employs 186 staff. A two-stage approach is being considered, with phased closures likely in July and November, and factory decommissioning thereafter. Managing director and CEO Stuart Broadhurst told staff the closure had nothing to do with their performance. “The business has enormous respect for this team – past and present. Until now the factory’s staff has staved off the inevitable. However,

otany Crime Watch volunteers have a new patrol base at the Botany Town Centre. The office, at the rear of the food court, was officially opened last Friday. Dick Marshall, chairman of the Botany Crime Watch Patrol said when the first car patrol was established in April 2004 “we broke every rule in the book, doing a lot of things we didn’t have the skill sets to do”. “It was a good thing though because we came back and said ‘we have got to do things better’. So we worked on improving to create an environment that volunteers would want to join,” he said. “Thirteen years on and it’s still going strong. If nothing else, the word is out that we are in business, we are professional and want to do more work in the community and with the council.” Botany Town Centre management, he said, had been extremely good to the group for many years. “They’ve gifted us office space year after year.” Auckland Council Howick Ward councillor, Dick Quax acknowledged the group’s work and the support that originally Manukau City Council and now Auckland Council gave; also the Botany Town Centre’s contribution

to the community. “Sometimes it takes a catalyst to get involved in the community,” he said. “For me it was a home invasion and I realised then that the only way to keep ourselves safe was not to rely totally on the police but look for the help of neighbours and the community, “That’s why this patrol and community group is so important,” he said. “Your passion and persistence of the volunteers is important

because I know you are not just patrolling, but doing other work in the community too.” Wendy Spiller, Counties Manukau East Police area commander said the relationship between the patrol group and the police was a true partnership which had realised a positive result over 13 years. “Because members of the community want it to be safe, they take ownership of their patch. We need you

to continue to do that work. We can’t be the eyes and ears everywhere,” she said. “In the three years in my role I have seen the skill levels of the patrol increase. They are always looking at developing those skills. Aimlessly driving around achieves nothing. Pakuranga College year 12 student Kodi Barlow has been selected to play in the NZ Touch Invitational team for the curtain raiser to the NZ Touch Blacks Trans Tasman Series in Auckland. The New Zealand Invitation team will play Japan in the two-test series on April 29 and April 30. Kodi, who has played Counties Representative Touch since the age of eight, has recently returned from two Nationals in Christchurch for the under-17 Girls and the under-21 Girls. Her under-17 team went through the Nationals unbeaten, winning the final making them back to back champions. Last year Kodi was selected for the New Zealand Touch under-17 girls team and travelled to Australia to compete in the Australian National Championships.

hey were powerless. In a digital age where students cannot function without their devices, Owairoa Primary School came up with a novel idea of having a power-less day. Functioning without electricity was a unique exercise that the school undertook as part of the Environmental Green Gold Award application where they are required to show that the school is conserving resources. Apart from the deafening silence, the teachers at the school were at a loss as to how they would have their morning tea. “There’s nothing that a bit of imagination cannot do,” was principal Alan McIntyre’s response. Soon there was water boiling on the gas ring, the break bells reverted back to the traditional hand bell as the school went quiet without the flicker of neon tubes and radioactive waves. “Powerless Blackout Day showed students and probably more so the staff, how reliant we are on power for modern classroom teaching practice,” says Mr McIntyre. “We are running a promotion for a month called ‘Flick the Switch and Power Down’ which is a school-wide effort to switch off all unnecessary power usage. “Students were surprised with the many standby lights and other hidden power consumption occurring, even after they thought every-

thing was switched off,” he says. This analysis was supported by special equipment called Gridspy which monitors the energy use in a number of different school circuits. The readouts show students where all the power is being consumed and at what time of day the biggest consumption happens. Life without the modern convenience of 230 volt power also had young students telling their parents to conserve energy at home too. The school is still investigating some power usage spikes occurring at night. They haven’t as yet been able to identify what is causing them.

Ground testing work has started on the East West Connections route between Onehunga and Otahuhu. The Onehunga, Penrose and Otahuhu route is being delivered by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and Auckland Transport (AT). The project is part of the Government’s accelerated package of Auckland transport projects and was referred to by Prime Minister John Key last January as one of the Government’s top priorities and a project of national significance. NZTA and AT are also planning to start work later this year on a package of early improvements aimed at providing benefits to freight and motorists along SH20 and around Onehunga local roads,

starting with four-laning a section of Neilson Street. However, the East Connections project has been criticised for concentrating on the Onehunga-Penrose area when long-term solutions should connect Penrose, Mount Wellington and East Tamaki, while also catering for residential intensification and growth from the south-eastern suburbs to Auckland Airport. Stephen Selwood, chief executive of the New Zealand Council for Infrastructure Development says the project provides no new east-west connectivity for Glen Innes, Panmure, Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and the industrial areas of East Tamaki and Mt Wellington.

hile it took about a month to paint, Howick artist Merv Appleton’s fifth entry into a high-profile Anzac art competition involves a lifetime of research and preparation. Mr Appleton learned last week that his entry is a finalist in the 2016 Gallipoli Art Prize, conducted by the Gallipoli Memorial Club in Sydney, Australia. It features the heroic work of horses in the World War I battlefields of the Somme and Passchendaele. “The Light Horse was a subject that had been in my mind for a while,” he says. My great-uncle was a stretcher bearer and what they did was incredibly brave considering the conditions. It was all very well having snow everywhere, but bullets and shells flying added another dimension. “They were appalling conditions. You don’t forget those things.” While New Zealand sent a Light Horse Division to World

War I, Mr Appleton says the Australian Light Horse Divisions that pulled wounded Anzacs to medical facilities in the battlefields of the Somme and Passchendaele were famous. “The conditions were appalling and wheels of ambulance trucks got stuck,” he says. “The horses were able to get in there and pull the wagons of wounded out. “The battlefields were covered with snow and the horses battled through with the walking wounded staggering behind.” Mr Appleton believes this is where the Anzac camaraderie was formed. “It was a huge bond. They never left their mates behind “Today, look at what the New Zealand and Australian firefighter and ambulance services do in emergencies. We go over there and they come here. They don’t need to be asked. “This bond was formed on the Somme and at Passchendaele and in a way it’s greater than that formed at Gallipoli. But it’s often

forgotten,” Mr Appleton says. The Gallipoli Art Prize, introduced in 2005, is open to citizens of Australia, New Zealand and Turkey with a theme of commemorating the birth of the Anzacs. The Gallipoli Memorial Club’s creed is “loyalty, respect, love of country, courage and comradeship”. Paintings do not necessarily have to depict World War I scenes, but can be relevant to other war theatres that the Anzacs have been and still are involved in. While the intention was for last year’s 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli battle to be the final competition, the club has decided to run another one this year. It offers one prize of $A20,000 ($22,190) for the winner. While Mr Appleton has not won the prize before, in 2012 he was proud when his painting The Stretcher Bearers was bought by the Sydney club for its collection to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli.

He is looking forward to attending the exhibition where he enjoys meeting the artists and seeing the other paintings. “I feel that though you’re out of it [war service] you can do something to keep the movement alive. “Australia and New Zealand are linked together like two brothers. The debate about the two flags being so similar amuses me. No other two countries are so

closely linked in the world. “We may have different opinions on rugby football or business. Upjohn assists with Cyclone Winston relief Helping out in cyclone-ravaged Fiji is one of four operations on which former Pakuranga College student Midshipman (MID) Alicia Upjohn has been deployed while serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy. The 20-year-old is currently on the Offshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS Wellington, which delivered some 60 tonnes of aid supplies and carried out a variety of tasks in the early stages of the disaster relief efforts in Fiji. MID Upjohn says the highlight of her career so far is being able to visit other countries and getting involved with the local communities. “I joined the Navy because it has good job opportunities. It is something that I’m passionate about, especially being on the ocean and helping people,” she said. Her role as a bridge watchkeeper sees her monitoring the manoeuvring and navigation of the ship. “It is a great career choice. You learn valuable life skills such as leadership and working in a team. You are given heaps of opportunities and are able to participate in activities that you normally wouldn’t get in a civilian job. The people are friendly and treat you like family.” Close to 500 combat engineers, soldiers, sailors and aircrew have been deployed to Fiji, making it one of the NZDF’s largest peacetime deployments to the Pacific.

She couldn’t believe she’s won a 12-week internship at the American Museum of Natural History in New York -the largest natural history museum in the world with a mission commensurately monumental in scope. The PhD Student from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is the first recipient of the American scholarship offered by AUT InterNZ programme. The Dannemora resident with a background in archival artefacts and museum display couldn’t believe she would be doing indigenous research beyond the academic walls of university. Benita, has just handed in her PhD thesis in Maori and Indigenous Development learning, and started a new job this week where she will be helping the museum (that spans four city blocks with 25 interconnected buildings) to find out stories behind some of the Maori and Pasifika artefacts. The focus of her thesis has been on archiving some of

these artefacts. “I will be involved in community projects and will team up with others to research artefacts that pertain to New Zealand, especially of Maori origin. Though I don’t know the exact nature of my job, I will be looking at writing archival articles as well,” she said. Wendy and Greg Witheridge run their Auto Rentals Direct business from their Howick home with a fleet of 30 vehicles stored in a central Howick yard. They are fastidious about the quality of their vehicles with damage down to the smallest scratch fixed when the damage is done. They see themselves in the middle-cost bracket of rental car companies, providing added value by delivering cars to the hirers. “The airport car rental companies won’t deliver this way,” Wendy says. “But I meet people personally at the airport. “If elderly people have come off a long haul flight and don’t want to drive, I stand at the car rental desk with my board and I drive them back to Howick. “Many of our customers come from overseas and stay local in Howick,” she says. “A lot of parents come to visit family. Or a mum might be in a Howick rest home and daughter is in Australia. There are no hassles in helping them. We do

that bit extra.” Not surprisingly, about 80 per cent of their work is repeat business. After Wendy and Greg sold their auto electrical business in Howick Wendy went on to work for five years for a former customer who was running a car rental company in Kelly Place, Howick. When the owner, a Qantas airline captain, was transferred to Wellington Wendy was handed the reins of what was then known as Auto Rentals Northpark. That was 15 years ago and the business name has since been changed to Auto Rentals Direct. Now the fleet numbers 30 including small, medium and large sedans such as Toyota Camrys, eight-seat people movers and cargo vans. She is also one of the Rental Vehicle Association New Zealand members who has been audited by the NZ Transport Agency and received an industry Code of Practice certificate ensuring overseas visitors get vital information about driving in New Zealand. When a booking is made Wendy sends the client the New Zealand road rules and again just before the client travels. She installs steering wheel tags reminding drivers

If she finds they can’t drive, despite being in possession of a licence, then she can refuse to hire the vehicle to the person, Wendy and Greg have advertised their business in the Times since they started out 15years ago. She says she gets on well with all the Times people she deals with, right up to managing director Reay Neben who comes to her when family members or out-of-town business associates are in need of a hire car.

‘Cats saved my life’ By Farida Master

hey give her reason to get out of bed every morning. A trained Yachting New Zealand instructor, Jenny Thomsen – who has sustained several brain injuries over the years – has found breeding award-winning Siamese cats has filled in the dark gaps in her life. “If it wasn’t for my cats I would have been stark raving mad,” she says. Having been on an emotional roller-coaster with brain injuries, starting with getting kicked on the face by a horse when she was 23, a former branch manager at Ray White Real Estate believes that people with brain injuries lose their power of concentration, social skills and can easily slip into depression. After having led a very active life teaching sailing at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club and racing in the MRX Auckland Yacht fleet, Ms Thomsen felt the need to fill the frustrating void in her life with a passion that would give her reason to live. “Since all my seven grandchildren have moved away, I felt I needed little faces to kiss and mouths to wash,” she says, looking fondly at her brood of seven Siamese cats at her home in Mellon’s Bay. “Also with the head injuries, I can’t bear too much light or sound. So I need some time to rest at home.” The first time she mentioned to her husband she wanted to breed Siamese cats, he gave an emphatic ‘no’.

But she decided to give it a go, anyway. Now she can’t stop smiling. Two of her pedigree cats have won the Supreme Exhibit Award at cat shows. “You have to win several Best in Show titles to get the Supreme Award,” she explains. “I brought Maidee home as a kitten and in September of last year she gave me six beautiful kittens, three of which I sold locally. “Maidee’s son Gulfy has gone to Sydney and he’s won the Supreme Exhibit Award at his first show,” she says. “At the Easter weekend, he was entered in the Royal Sydney Easter Show and picked up a Supreme Award again in the Kitten Ring. Ms Thomsen was thrilled when last weekend his sister Sailavie Maidee’s Dora the Seal Point girl picked up another Supreme Exhibit at the Metropolitan Cat Club in Onehunga. Ms Thomsen says she now spends a bit of time reaching out to people on Facebook.

“People don’t realise how traumatic it is for those with head injuries. “I am constantly hurting myself either walking into things or getting grazed by the door frame. “It’s like my brain is not telling my limbs to keep a safe distance from doors,” she says. Whilst spending time on Facebook, she connected with a woman who was feeling very down, due to having sustained a huge head injury. “I wrote to her and reached out to her.” The call saved someone’s life. “The woman later told me that she was going to commit suicide but after talking to me she felt better and decided against it,” she says, with tears trickling down her face. Through this story Ms Thomsen wants people with brain injuries to find a passion so that they have something to look forward to and not get too overwhelmed with the challenges life throws at them.

Electric vehicles on the road South-east fans of electric vehicles will get a close up look when owners and enthusiasts move through in the course of a road trip from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Feedback Get out of the Dark Ages

Regarding the latest comments from (the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Residents and Ratepayers Association) chair Evelyn Brown regarding coastal access issues and the proposed cycleway as detailed in the H&P Times (March 31), a more biased, out-dated and outright ambiguous point of view would be hard to find. Being (the) Chair I wonder if it’s not time Evelyn was asked to re-think whether she is there to support the wants and needs of her community, or just the handful of people living on that exact spot wanting to protect the public land in front of them purely for their own use . Evelyn suggests that the creation of a 2.5m pathway “impacts greatly” on the green grass beachfront reserve, that it would be hard to imagine cyclists and push-chairs sharing this space, that it impacts on the ability of recreational users to access the

beach and that car parking spaces will be lost and local residents are already forced to park on the grass which leaves mud and ruts. She also states that this area of reserve is poorly maintained. Well, ambiguous in the extreme. Does Evelyn want people to enjoy and have access to the area or not? I see she is also opposed to fishing along this area as it stops people using it. Are cyclists and fishermen not included in her idea of people enjoying the area? I too am very sad that her 21-year-old grandson stood on a fish hook but seriously...21? Maybe time to learn to watch where he is going? If the area is degraded as stated then surely this is because Evelyn’s mates continue illegally parking on the grass, reducing recreational access to the area and degrading our public reserve? Parking on the grass should be banned immediately and anyone caught doing it, fined. Simple.

What mindless parking A more and more common occurrence on walking the streets in Howick these days. Why do people feel the need to park on footpaths designed for pedestrians? If they feel the car is too big to park on the road (which is made for cars), they need to buy a smaller car. The width of shared paths has been well studied in NZ and I can assure Evelyn that 2.5m is well over the path width that we enjoy in Beachlands/Maraetai. Walkers, runners, mums and babies and cyclists use our paths daily. There can be no doubt that the addition of shared paths is a huge asset to any community and you just need to visit one of ours on any weekend to see all members of our community out and enjoying them together. Parents with little kids need somewhere to ride too, believe it or not Evelyn. Saying it is a real worry as people don’t feel they can go out and enjoy the area is ridiculous. You have already made it clear that you do not want people to go and enjoy the area, you want it to be left alone as a private parking area for the immediate residents, end of story. About the only bit I agree with is that “planning is forever”. It is imperative that we get it right. It is important that we use our collective might to ensure that the elitist hobnobs within our community don’t overpower the rights of all with their own agendas. Evelyn, cycling is the largest growing recreational activity in the world and it is very healthy for all of our citizens. Surely we should endorse this? Or is the rest of the world wrong? Perhaps it’s time to come out of the Dark Ages Evelyn, or stand aside and let someone who truly wants to help their community and ratepayers get what is best for them. The money and land is

Steroid creams a danger

Red Skin Syndrome - have you heard of this? I hadn’t up until now, but I’ve seen it on my son, off and on for three-and-a-half years. Red Skin Syndrome, also known as Topical Steroid Addiction and Withdrawal, is a debilitating condition that can arise from the use of topical steroid creams to treat a skin problem such as eczema. You are prescribed this cream by your doctor. The symptoms may stabilise and stop altogether, but it may be the rash re-appears and you use the steroid cream again and again. You may have been using the cream for years. RSS is characterised by red, itchy, burning skin. A ‘flare’ can result in intense itchiness, cracking, swelling and oozing. I encourage you to google Dr Marvin Rapaport, and Red Skin Syndrome. You will be shocked yet relieved to know you are not alone in this. There seems to be no quick fix, and I’ve read that it will get worse before it gets better however, according to the stories on these sites, there is an end to it. Also, there is no typical age; if you use a steroid cream then there is a possibility that you will get RSS. Hannah Pakuranga

elebrity cook and author Chelsea Winter is encouraging Kiwis to invite their friends to breakfast in May to raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. Registrations are now open for the annual Pink Ribbon Breakfast with proceeds going towards breast cancer research. Last year supporters held 2600 breakfasts around the country attended by 65,000 people raising more than $1 million. The fund-raising concentrates on support for clinical trials, immunotherapies, preventing the spread of cancer, improving clinical practice for better patient

outcome, and treatments for advanced breast cancer. Ms Winter says she is honoured to front the 2016 Pink Ribbon Breakfast Campaign. “Food, friends and fundraising for a good cause, what’s not to love?” she says. “It’s amazing to be promoting awareness for what is such a fantastic initiative on many levels. “Many of my fans have been involved in previous years’ breakfasts using my recipes. I’m glad I can do more to help. I encourage everyone to get involved and host a breakfast.” The foundation’s chief executive Evangelia Henderson says the funds raised will help make up for the dire

House consents moving R

esidential building construction continues to grow throughout the country with the highest number of houses consented in a decade in the year to February. Dr Nick Smith, Minister for Building and Housing says the 27,745 new homes consented in the February year show that the housing boom, which started in Christchurch followed by Auckland, is now spreading to other parts of the country, such as Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Nelson/Tasman and Queenstown. In 10 of the country’s 16 regions the number of new dwellings consented in February was higher than in February last year, according to latest Statistics New Zealand building consents figures. Regions with the largest increases were Auckland up 259 (plus 49 per cent) to 787; Bay of Plenty up 99 (plus 98 per cent) to 200; and Otago up 99 (plus 136 per cent) to 172. Statistics New Zealand says the trend in the number of new dwellings consented in Auckland reached its highest level since 2004. “The trend appears to have tailed off now, but this is likely to be revised in future months because of the volatility of the series,” says Liz MacPherson, Government

Statistician. Dr Smith says he is “particularly encouraged by the February figures for Auckland of 787 for the month, up 50 per cent from 528 in February 2015 and more than three times the low of 220 in 2009,” he says. “We are maintaining growth of 25 per cent annually in the house build rate since the Housing Accord was signed with Auckland Council, and sustaining the

longest and strongest period of housing growth in the city’s history.” The Government, he says, is continuing to free up more land faster through the Accord, together with the council. “We have also put in place initiatives to constrain building materials costs, rein in development contributions, cut compliance costs and invest in improved sector productivity,” he says.

The next steps in the Government’s programme include advancing new housing on Crown-owned land in Auckland, supporting the Auckland Council to complete the Auckland Unitary Plan, consulting on a new Urban Development National Policy Statement and reforming the Resource Management Act to address long-term issues affecting housing supply and affordability.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

All action in finals day Howick Bowling Club was in high spirits on Sunday for the final round of the National Intercentre for 2016. It was Auckland Men’s Scott Cottrell who took an early lead in the singles and remained in command throughout, before cruising to a comfortable 25- win. It was a close game in the Fours with Auckland trailing for the majority of the game. Coming back, they entered the last end one down on the board. The men picked up the all-important two points needed to guarantee Auckland the over-all win. Though the score had already blossomed to 24-10, the pairs concluded on the 16th end. The Auckland Men last won the Intercentre title in 2012.

Fun factor eases nerves H

aving fun in their favourite sport is one of the delightful aspects married into the success story of champion golfer Lydia Ko and rising rugby star Damian McKenzie. In a sport that is an excoriating test of nerves, world woman No 1 golfer Ko continues to excel, having won her second major by claiming the ANA Inspiration at Rancho Mirage in California on Monday by one shot. At 18, the delightful Ko is a sporting freak, the like of which the golfing world had not previously seen in one so young. With Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn holding a two stroke lead with three to play, Ko could be forgiven for believing a win was beyond her. Instead the Thai bogeyed 16 and 17 and the remarkable Ko grabbed her chance with an 88ft wedge and one foot birdie putt on the 18th. Such has been her consistency that Ko no longer surprises, except when she is having a rare bad day. At 20, tiny 80kg redhead McKenzie is another who believes having fun does much to relax his nerves and boost his confidence. That is why he smiles as he prepares to kick goals and shut out the

First-five rather than fullback remains his favourite position. But with Aaron Cruden returning to his best in the No 10 jersey for the Chiefs, McKenzie is not complaining. St Kents head to First XI Cup Saint Kentigern College boys’ First XI cricket team has qualified for the national Secondary Schoolboys’ First XI Cup in Christchurch after victory over Mt Albert Grammar School (MAGS) in the district final. Formerly known as the Gillette Cup, the prestigious tournament began in 1990 as the national tournament for secondary school one-day cricket. Through nationwide knockout competitions, six district champions progress to the national finals. Playing on neutral territory at Melville Park in Epsom last month, MAGS batted first reaching 199-8 from 50 overs. Sandeep Patel showed impressive form taking four wickets and was on a hat-trick after bowling a two-wicket maiden. He finished with impressive figures of 10-4-21-4. Saint Kentigern found themselves in trouble early as opener Patel was removed for no score in the first over. Finn Allen was out shortly after in the fifth over, having made eight runs with the score at 19. Jimmy Webb was judged to be lbw for 20 at 54-3 in the 14th before Conor Ansell and Fergus Ellis steadied the ship. Having opened the batting, Ansell played an anchoring role, scoring 46 from 106 balls to help his team to 149-4 from 34 overs. Ellis bludgeoned his way to 76 not out from 66 balls including six fours and three sixes to reach the 200 runs needed with seven overs to spare. Sajith Dhambagolla played a cameo role with a knock of 26 not out. The finals will be played in December. This is the fourth time the college has qualified for the tournament.

Salem becomes national u14s champ S

alem Notter is the national mounted games champion after winning the under-14 category at the New Zealand Mounted Games Individual Championships in Pukekohe over Easter weekend. The 14-year-old from Elim Christian College teamed up with seasoned campaigner, Cameo, the pony his big sister Sky rode to success in the under-17 National Individuals last year. Notter headed into the competition in fine form having already ridden away with second place in the under 17 National Pairs and Teams championships held at Horse of the Year in early March. He also claimed second in both the under-14 pairs and individuals competitions in 2015. Contending in the under 17 grade aboard 15-year-old pony Sharney was a new combination for Notter who was excited for the experi-

ence. “He is working to gain as much experience as possible riding different ponies as he prepares to travel to Europe,” mum Tanja says. Notter will compete in both the World Pairs in Denmark and World Individuals in Wales on borrowed ponies. Sky placed third in the under-17 grade and seventh in the open category at the individual championships. Sky previously attended Elim Christian College but decided to do correspondence instead to focus on her riding. It certainly paid off after winning the National under17 individual championship last year as well the under-17 pairs and teams titles at the beginning of March. Sky will also compete in the 2016 World Pairs and Individuals, but she will first focus on the World Teams Championships, where she is part of the New Zealand
