Bucklands Beach Yacht Club club manager Lyle Tresadern the boats weren’t from the club. “ It was a NZ Optimist clinic which they have been holding at Eastern Beach at Willow Park Christian Camp. “However with the strong onshore breeze over the last few days we suggested they come over to little Bucks where it is a bit more sheltered,” Mr Tresadern said. “The camp does encourage some of our top Optimist sailors.”
School buses change again The school bus routes are set to change as Auckland Transport announces it is once again rolling out its new and improved bus services
F
ollowing an outpouring of concern from parents in December, AT announced it would delay the changes to school bus services for up to six months until a proper consultation had taken place. However, just two months later it’s been announced the changes will take effect from term one. “At this time, we are confident that we have now engaged effectively with all of the schools. “We have listened to them and made changes where required,” a memo from AT states.
“Although it was suggested that all school bus changes should be delayed for six months, our discussions with schools have meant that we have resolved all issues that can be resolved within our financial and contractual constraints.” AT spokesperson James Ireland says that due to the public nature of the changes, they received more feedback than what they would have gotten during a standard consultation. “Many parents have engaged with us and we are confident that once they get used to the new services, they will realise these are
better than what was in place last year.” AT says they consulted with all 27 affected schools, and made changes to the seven schools with concerns. Bus routes have been reinstated for Our Lady Star of the Sea, Howick Intermediate and Botany Downs Primary and new routes have been added for Somerville Intermediate to address capacity concerns raised by the school and parents. Buses have been added to the Sacred Heart College schedule as well as changing the interchange
point to Pakuranga. AT will operate a service to Baradene from Panmure Station where students can transfer from public buses, as was always proposed, but a private dedicated school bus service will be available through Coachways NZ to Baradene and a number of other central Auckland schools on a trial basis. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross says he is “hopeful but far from happy” with the changes being rolled out come the beginning of the school year. “The whole process has been dif-
ficult for parents to follow as the communication has not been clear, and the changes appear to have been very rushed for, what appears to be, budgetary reasons.” “AT deserves some credit for talking to all affected schools and trying to find an alternative approach after receiving feedback,” he says. “They have done this much faster than the “up to six months” that we were previously advised. owick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) has been fighting for five long years since the inception of the first Draft Unitary Plan to ensure that Howick’s wonderful views and the lowrise historic village retains its uniqueness and we intend to celebrate this next weekend with a picnic for all on Stockade Hill on Anniversary Day beginning at 2pm. Although HRRA won significant victories during the process of the Unitary Plan hearings, the increased heights notified opposite Stockade Hill and in the Howick Village came as a huge shock in late 2016 and resulted in our petition to Council to save our precious views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve. At the end of 2017, council moved to address some of these issues by creating Plan Changes 3 and 4. We are now in the final stages of defending our position regarding these changes in front of
limiting heights, somehow this small section was exempt and apartments would go to 18 metres. The council has now moved to correct this error and to reinstate the original heights following the recommendations of the Independent Hearings Panel. In the January 30 public hearing at the Town Hall, Howick Ratepayers and Residents Assn will oppose the arguments advanced by Housing NZ Corp who regard themselves as the guardian of intensification everywhere in Auckland and we will support the council’s Plan Change 4 correction of these errors. (We are buoyed up by the fact that 250 people wrote additional submissions to this Plan Change and everyone was supporting this reinstatement of height limits). The eminent judge of the Independent Hearing Panel for the Unitary Plan agreed with Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association at the Unitary Plan hearing that the existing heights in the village (i.e. the advertised heights when the Unitary Plan was first proposed) were to be retained. However, when the new council GIS maps were drawn, mysteriously, the height limits from the Crawford Medical Centre to Parkhill Road and other areas of the village were omitted despite this section of the map being clearly delineated in purple, along with part of the rest of the Howick Special Business Area overlay which was all supposed to have a nine metre height limit. This resulted in erroneous ideas that although the rest of Howick Business Area had the Special Character status
Zero target slips Official figures just announced by Water Safety New Zealand show that the zero target for drowning fatalities among children aged underfive slipped a little further from the nation’s grasp in 2017. It represents an increase of 10, or 13 per cent, compared to 2016. While there has been an increase in fatalities versus 2016, an analysis of five year rolling averages indicates a plateauing of preventable drowning fatalities against an increasing population, high tourism and immigration, and growth in recreational activity. In 2017 there were seven preventable fatal drownings of toddlers, four more than in 2016. There was an increase in preventable fatal drownings in, or around the home in 2017 with seven bath, eight home pool and three pond fatalities – 18 compared with five in 2016. Two fatalities occurred in Public Pools. Offshore fatalities almost doubled from 11 in 2016 to 20 in 2017. Nine lake fatalities in 2017 (zero in 2016) has brought inland still water preventable drownings to 13 in 2017. River fatalities almost halved from 23 in 2016 to 13 in 2017, beach fatalities were down to 14 in 2017 from 21 in 2016 and there were 5 less tidal water fatalities (11 in 2017 down from 16 in 2016). Meanwhile, a Cockle Bay family has joined up to their local YMCA swim school in Lagoon Panmure. Laura Fisher and her husband are parents of four children aged five and under, and Stevie is their baby daughter. They are recipients of one of the first new Baby Swim Scholarships from Huggies.

Velocette retired from race track By Kelly Teed
U
nderstated elegance is the first thing that comes to mind upon seeing Malcolm Anderson’s 1930 MK 1 KTT Velocette. Even to the untrained eye, the British bike screams classic. It’s sleek and elegant, with no superfluous features. The bare bones of the Velocette are displayed proudly – a statement that immediately draws attention to the bike. It has no rear suspension – simply springs under the seat – and an overhead camshaft – a feature quite advanced for its day. The 350cc bike was first produced in 1925 specifically to race the Isle of Man TT course. Capable of more than 160km/h, it went on to win the junior TT in 1926, 1928 and 1929. It was acquired by Mr
Malcolm Anderson and his 1930 MK 1 KTT Velocette.

Anderson in 1980 in a state almost unrecognisable as to what it is today. Together with his father, he restored the bike to get it race-ready and went on to race at Hampton Downs, Taupo and multiple times in the New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Racing Register (NZCMRR) Classic Racing Festival, managing to collect more than a few wins including both the Velocette Trophy and the Perrone Trophy until he retired the bike from racing in 2010. “I’ve had it for about 35 years and raced it for 30, now it’s more or less archived. “It’s 88 [years old], it’s getting on a bit – you can’t just get the bits from (DIY chain) Bunnings,” he laughs. These days, he’s more interested in the history behind the bikes. “I’ve moved on a bit to wanting to archive things
and record the history. It’s that aspect I like – the development, the technology of the time and to restore things as they were, but present them in their best light.” At 88 years old, the Velocette has had a life well lived. Once the best of the best, it now sits pride of place in Mr Anderson’s man cave – and while it’s no longer racing, it still has plenty of history to share with those who seek it.

Spreading good cheer Howick locals made the most of one car owner’s misfortune over the holidays. A little silver Honda had been parked on Nelson Street since before Christmas with a broken windscreen and a smashed rear end. Some members of the community found a way to make the most of a bad situation by decorating the totalled car, which has recently been moved, in Christmas decorations and sparkly tinsel. Auckland Transport was aware of the car wreck and say the car wasn’t abandoned and was parked legally.

Councillors take charge
L
ocal councillors are taking charge to fix up the streets of east Auckland. Councillors Sharon Stewart and Dick Quax have ventured out into the Howick ward to see what needs looking after. “We want our community to be safe and enjoy the areas they live in and we need to work together to achieve these positive outcomes,” says Stewart. Crumbling kerbs, overgrown weeds and tree roots damaging footpaths were among the issues discovered in the area. “We had tree roots which had pushed the concrete up so badly
that it was a serious safety concern, as well as trees that were so overgrown you had to duck your head to get under them. It just wasn’t good enough,” she says. Stewart has also taken to Facebook to get feedback from the community on what their biggest concerns were and was flooded with support from residents. “The East Auckland Grapevine has been a marvellous tool to get Auckland Transport (AT) and others looking at the issues,” she says. “It’s an easy way for people to learn about issues concerning others and have their voices

heard.” The response from various council departments has been positive, she says. “[AT] are currently slowly but surely removing some of the trees that are cause such damage and repairing footpaths and the road and utilities,” Stewart says. “Instead of having to patch and re-patch, they are removing the problem and re-planting appropriate trees that have roots that don’t damage,” she says. AT says it is committed to keeping the community looking tidy and in top condition. “As soon as Councillor Stewart
raised issues about footpaths the local maintenance contract manager met with her and discussed her concerns,” says AT spokesperson James Ireland. “Councillor Stewart highlighted a number of sites in which summer weather had caused plants to grow over footpaths or where roots had cracked concrete footpaths. “Auckland Transport was very pleased to have this information reported and is currently getting the plants cut back and the footpaths patched.” Issues? Freedom camping could be about to return to Howick. A freedom camping trial took place in the area early last year, outraging some locals who felt there wasn’t enough consultation between council and residents. Some locals felt there wasn’t enough consultation between council and residents. The initiative was trialled at 28 sites around Auckland, including four in Howick. Macleans Park, Moore St car park, Wellington St car park and Lloyd Elsmore Park were available only to selfcontained campervans. Auckland Council manager, social policy & bylaws Michael Sinclair said the trial was designed as a way to promote Howick to self-contained campers as a way to boost local economic development. In a statement, he said council staff are now assessing sites “to be included in a new freedom camping bylaw as areas where freedom camping is either prohibited or restricted”. He says council staff will engage with local boards and community groups during the development of the bylaw. Public submissions will be invited and hearings will take place once the draft bylaw has been approved by council. Sinclair said the council aims to have a new bylaw adopted and implemented in time for summer 2018/19.

The reality is a desire for things to be different” is present in many New Zealander’s minds. Depression and anxiety are quite wide-spread with mental disorders determined the third leading cause of health loss. Most affected are one-in-four women between 35-44 years. Further, the rate of children diagnosed with mental disorders has alarmingly doubled in five years. Key studies quoted by the Mental Health Foundation report 39 per cent of youth being bullied in the past two months and 29 per cent of female students deliberately self-harming in the last 12 months. Triggering the occasional anxiety and feeling overwhelmed are a normal response to stressful situations. The physiological mechanism of human selfprotection kicks in. But prolonged or extreme exposure risks the sympathetic or “Fight-or-Flight” portion of the autonomic nervous system to subconsciously take full charge. Subtle things can then bring on a cascade of unwanted physical, mental, emotional and behavioural reactions. Living in
a non-sensitive, overstimulating society increases this risk, as triggers do not have to be personally experienced to create intense fear and dread. Anxiety simplified is the active trigger of caring too much, while depression as advanced state is not caring enough anymore. Both change the way we think, feel and deal with life. The “she’ll be right” idiom is outdated, as our reactions can only with great difficulty be controlled by conscious effort alone. But there is good news! Resources and support are available to manage and overcome these states. Gaining a clearer understanding of what is going on in the personal universe is a first step. Howick’s Monterey Gallery is set to close at the end of February. The gallery is currently holding an end of lease sale. Raewyn Hamilton opened the original Monterey Gallery in 1999 and said it’s a shame to see it go. She said the gallery, which had followers from all around Auckland and New Zealand, was an enhancement to the village.

Twyford: They’re scaremongering

ransport Minister Phil Twyford has lashed out at opposition claims it is reconsidering some major roading projects. And to suggest the Labour Government isn’t going ahead with projects that don’t exist is misleading, Twyford said in a response to the Times. “This is pure Opposition politicking.” Andrew Bayly, MP for Hunua, and Judith Collins, MP for Papakura, have launched petitions to save the Mill Road corridor project from Flat Bush and Manukau to Papakura and Drury, which the national MPs claim is under review by the Government. “This project is vital to meet the needs of the increasing population and business development in the Franklin area, and the pressing need to create additional capacity for the motorway network,” Mr Bayly said. “Unfortunately, Phil Twyford says a number of planned roading projects are under review, including the $955 million Mill Road corridor project, while the Government attempts to divert billions of dollars to smaller Auckland projects, such as inner city trams. He said an estimated 5000 new jobs are to be created in the Stevenson’s Drury South business park development. If the

Mill Road expansion does not go ahead, the subsequent increase in motorway congestion will represent a barrier to the business park development. “The proposed 4-lane highway from Mill Road and Redoubt Road through Papakura would take in Drury South and connect to a new intersection on SH1 between the Drury and Ramarama interchanges. “It would be an important link of the upgraded South Auckland road network already including North and South motorway lane increases, and the Waterview motorway and tunnel,” he says. Meanwhile Mr Twyford told the Times the Mill Road Corridor upgrade is an Auckland Transport project and planning is continuing. “The Labour-led Government has not altered any existing roading projects except Auckland’s East-West link and officials are working to identify a lower-cost, better-value option
there,” he said. “Work is continuing on the Mill Road Corridor as it did before the election and to suggest otherwise is just scaremongering.” He said Auckland Transport (AT) is leading work to progress the AMETI Eastern Busway. A consent hearing is currently taking place for the Panmure to Pakuranga stage of the project, with a decision expected early next year. Work to prepare for construction is planned to start in early 2018. “It important to note that the other “highway projects” referred to in National’s petition do not exist. They were election campaign promises made by National in August and never costed or funded,” Mr Twyford said. “It is rich for the opposition to claim these proposed projects are urgent when they had nine years to undertake this work.”

Certainty needed for transport gestion and delivering the public transport improvements that we desperately need in East Auckland. Without alternative proposals, the city of Auckland is yet again left without a way forward to improving its infrastructure to handle the rapid growth we are experiencing. Last week also saw reports that Labour is considering diverting taxes paid by motorists who want better roads, to light rail instead. The National Land Transport Fund, is paid for by road users through petrol excise and road user charges and is ring-fenced to be spent on roading projects. The NLTF means that those using the roads are the ones paying for the roads. Changing this model to allow the NLTF to be used to pay for the Governments pet rail projects shows contempt

Public transport fares changing Bus, train and ferry fares will be changing from February 11, 2018. Auckland Transport reviews fares annually to ensure they keep pace with operating costs and the portion of costs recovered from fares. Colin Homan, group manager, AT Development, says Auckland Transport has a target to recover 50 per cent of the cost of public transport from fares, but this is currently at 46.2 per cent, with the balance subsidised by ratepayers and taxpayers. “Over the past year AT has added a number of new services and more capacity including the roll out of new bus networks in West and East Auckland, the addition of more bus

ransport continues to be one of the most important policy areas for Pakuranga, Howick, and Botany, and my National Party colleagues and I are continuing to hold the government to account over its plans around the country. Together with my neighbouring MPs, Denise Lee and JamiLee Ross, we recently launched a petition calling on the government to commit to funding the East West Link project, which they cancelled last year. robust tourism sector, which drove healthy sales of rental vehicles, helped to make December the strongest on record with 11,570 new vehicle registrations. December 2017 was up 9.6 per cent (980 units) on December 2016, and took the 2017 calendar year to an all-time new record, the fourth year in a row with a total of 159,871
registrations on corrected figures. New vehicle registrations for the 2017 year were 9.0 per cent (13,118 units) ahead of 2016. The total registrations of passenger cars and SUVs for 2017 were up by 5.8 per cent (5945 units) and commercial vehicles by 16.2 per cent (7173 units). For the month of December, Toyota remained the overall mar-

ew Zealanders in the market for a new car this year will continue to add utes and SUVs to their wish-list, say automobile industry experts. Driveline, a specialist vehicle leasing and finance company, has released its list of the top 10 vehicles for 2018, giving insight into what Kiwis’ next purchases could be – and it seems larger vehicles will continue to rule the marketplace this year. “Kiwis certainly have plenty of choice when it comes to deciding what wheels they use to get around our beautiful country in, but it seems they can’t go past solid SUVs and practical utes,” says Driveline CEO Lance Manins. SUVs and utes proved top sellers in the past few years when it came to new vehicle registrations. The Ford Ranger topped the list in both 2016 and 2017, making it New Zealand’s number one selling new model vehicle for two years running – and Driveline predicts this trend will continue in 2018. These products are killing us
On Tuesday, January 9 I said goodbye to a brilliant young friend (35 years old) who died of cancer. He had been through all the treatments recommended by the medical world but the disease metastasized and he lost the battle. Needless to say, his family and relatives were devastated, so were his friends and I. For years, cancer has gripped peoples’ lives and the Ministry of Health seemed to have a bottomless budget for dealing with it, but it has not worked, this ambulance at the bottom of the cliff! Instead of dealing with the agony, pain and heartbreak, why doesn’t the Ministry of Health, with all its money, health advisors, researchers, etc deal with the preventive issues before they become a problem? If one were to Google carcinogens, one will find all sorts of information that points to material we should not even touch, let alone consume/use! 2018, a new year but so far it hasn’t proved to be happy. Is NZ going to continue to bury the people because we can afford the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff but not the guts to stop buying the products that are killing us, such as pesticides that contaminate our agricultural products, the chemical drugs that kill our bodies, the carcinogenic additives that contaminate our food, the carcinogenic therapies that encourages the cancer in our bodies? MSG, nitrosamines, roundup (glyphosate), chemotherapy, radiotherapy, to name just a few, should be banned in NZ – my opinion – so we can have a more natural life! The NZ papers should also get their investigative journalists to do some research to find out how many people diagnosed with cancer really got cured and how, as I’m sure many of NZ’s citizens would be keen to know. 2018, is it going to be different or is it same old, same old?

We have an on-going problem with a property at No 1 San Jose Rise in Shamrock Park. The owner refuses to maintain the property and it has become a fire hazard. There is also a problem with rats nesting in the section in the past. Council have told the neighbouring properties to place bait down at their own expense, which is unfair. The council has tried several times to contact
the owner but he refuses to respond. Last year the property was cleared of tree branches and mowed by Downer contractor to the council, at the ratepayers’ expense. The council has said the only way they can recoup the cost is when the property is sold. As the property cannot be built on, no one will buy it. The cost should be added to the owners’ rates.

It’s separatist legislation
Re MACA (Marine and Coastal Act), yet another piece of racist/separatist legislation is being negotiated out of public view, aided and abetted by the equally racist entity known as the Waitangi Tribunal. The claim itself is a sham yet the incredulous decision and reasons for the decision of the then Treaty Minister Finlayson in approving it beggars belief. It does show what the unsuspecting public is up against. As you will see, just as with the Waitangi Tribunal, oral evidence is given precedence over factual, verifiable evidence. The silence from the media is deafening. Scared, muzzled, complicit? Who knows? What he was describing is happening under our noses right now. If he is concerned, you should be too. We are already subject to a plethora of central and local government-sponsored racist/separatist legislation. It needs to be nipped in the bud now. Get involved or the shadows and their gutless targets will win the day and the country will be divided even further than it already is.

Regarding the story on moving bus stops at the marina (Times, January 11). I am shocked that the buses now will stop further away from the ferry. Last time I caught a bus to the ferry, the bus stopped right by the ramp just as the boat left, not even timed right. But to now have to walk further between boat and bus, the council should be encouraging use of public transport not putting more hurdles in the way. But to do this so boaties have somewhere to park and launch their boats says a lot about the people that made the decision. Obviously people with boats have more priority than people who use our transport system to get to and from work, do business and indeed tourists and elderly infirm people who will now have to walk further. Sad that a few boaties have priority.

edian house prices across New Zealand rose by 5.8 per cent year-on-year to $550,000 – up from $520,000 in December 2016. And median prices for New Zealand excluding Auckland increased by 6.6 per cent to $450,000 (up from $422,000 in December 16) according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). Auckland’s median house price increased 1.8 per cent in December to $870,000 up from $855,000 compared to December 2016. This price growth is consistent with what we have observed with the REINZ HPI. Meanwhile 13 out of 16 regions saw prices increase in December, with three of those regions experiencing record prices: ■■ Waikato – up 11.7 per cent year-on-year to $525,000 (a $35,000 increase since November 17 and a $55,000 increase since December 16) ■■ Bay of Plenty – up 20.4 per cent year-on-year to $598,000 (a $23,000 increase since November 17 and a $101,500 increase since December 16) ■■ Wellington – up 4.7 per cent to $560,000 (a $10,000 increase since November 17 and a $25,000 increase since December 16). Three regions saw a price decrease year-on-year – Marlborough (down 2.1 per cent to $372,000), West Coast (down 1.6 per cent to $185,000) and Canterbury (down 0.7 per cent to $439,000).
REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell says Median house prices across New Zealand increased 5.8 per cent in December, representing an increase of $30,000 since the same time last year. “This increase defies the predictions of many commentators who 12 or 13 months ago were adamant that house prices would fall in 2017,” she says. “While the increase will be welcome news to those looking to sell their property, for those first home buyers this will not have been the Christmas present they were hoping for. Although there is some hope as the rate of price increases has decreased significantly compared to previous years meaning that if the trend continues, there is more of a chance that those saving for a house deposit can keep up with increasing property prices.” “When looking at the Auckland picture, this is the first time that all seven districts have had a median price of in excess of $700,000 highlighting how expensive the city is becoming. Additionally, North Shore City has reached a record median price of $1,113,000 – the nearest the price has been to this point previously was $1,105,000 in November 2016,” points out Norwell.

The median number of days to sell a property nationally increased by 1 day (from 31 to 32) when compared to December 2016.

In December, auctions represented 14 per cent of all properties sold in New Zealand, down from 18 per cent in December 2016. This represents 827 properties sold under the hammer, down from 1154 properties in December 2016. Of those 827 properties sold by auction, more than half (55 per cent - or 455 properties) were in Auckland.
Inventory
The number of properties available for sale nationally increased by 9.3 per cent (from 22,521 to 24,610) compared to 12 months ago, and for New Zealand excluding Auckland the number of properties available for sale increased by 2.1 per cent (from 15,784 to 16,113). Regions with the largest increase year-on-year in the number of properties for sale were Auckland (up 26.1 per cent), Wellington (up 21 per cent) and Canterbury (up 18.6 per cent).

Further to your correspondent “The storm taketh away” (Times, January 18) edition, the Maraetai trig tower, or more correctly the trigonometric station, was erected between 50 and 70 years ago according to longstanding residents. Maraetai Beach had grass covered hills with only a few trees so subdivision surveying was relatively easy. Most trig beacons, trig points or trig stations were erected on prominent high points such as on Stockade Hill, Howick or on the Mangemangeroa Reserve in Somerville Road, Howick. These wooden trig stations were erected in New Zealand between 1909 and 1947. Now with more accurate GPS systems, these historical structures are no longer used but should be left if possible as part of our historical heritage.

What about the impact?
Re: AMETI (Times, January 18). It might be the cat’s whiskers for those living on the Howick Peninsula, but local Members of Parliament and city councillors have been curiously silent about the impact that the AMETI/Reeves Road flyover will have on Pakuranga and its people. Pakuranga could be a fantastic town centre but the on-again off-again motorway plan over the last 10 years has killed off new investment in the area. Motorway construction will undermine the
viability of sports, health and arts facilities located here. The Reeves Road flyover will turn Pakuranga into a blighted back-

Youth and social services facilities will be seriously affected. The plaza, already withering away, will die as local customers avoid the mess. These days, smart cities are tearing down flyovers. They replace them with people-friendly spaces, public transport upgrades, and civic amenities. It’s absurd that the Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and National Party friends are now calling for fast-forward on a flyover even as the sensible busway to Panmure is about to get started. Without a careful and detailed compensation package, the EastWest link just looks like National Party vandalism on Pakuranga. As a resident, I’d like to see a commitment from our politicians to Pakuranga’s rejuvenation instead of a one-note call for that dastardly flyover.

Pakuranga lost its pride
In reply to Julie Patterson’s letter (Times, January 11) regarding lack of pride in our area, I would like to add that, sadly, our area of Pakuranga has lost all pride over the last 10 years or so. How does the body work? In your house, you have a circuit breaker box. In that box you have individual circuits that control specific rooms in your house. If the houses that are rented were looked after, perhaps the tenants that live in them might respect them and the area around it. While I understand all tenants are not bad, a handful are and as the houses are run-down, the good tenants don’t want to rent these. Two are leased to Housing NZ. What a mess – rubbish, cars everywhere. (There are) many media reports on landlords, many on hard-done-by tenants, bad tenants etc but no-one thinks about those. Sadly, there is no pride anymore and it reflects right through society.

Takeyuki delivered a workshop on cross-cultural communication in business management and sustainable tourism management during his international marketing trip organised by Education New Zealand. “Okinawa is keen to develop their tourism industry,” says Takeyuki. Members of the Okinawa Convention and Visitors Bureau first visited ITC during a recent trip to New Zealand. “They were so impressed with the Level 3 and 4 education which is interactive, practical and customer focussed that they were keen to learn more about it.” ITC also has a custom-built Airport Training Centre on its premises, complete with aircraft seats, a check-in lounge and security and customs, and a paging system that gives students an opportunity to experience a real job environment. “At ITC, we have many staff members who are very experienced in cross-cultural com-

It’s not the same in Okinawa. “The heritage that individual student brings to the tourism industry is so valuable.” Takeyuki says he delivered the workshop in ‘Kiwi style’ – that is to say, a relaxed format where the lecturer facilitates discussion so that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the knowledge shared. His visit was covered by two local newspapers and a prime television channel. “This workshop marked the first time that a lecturer outside Japan was invited to Okinawa, so it was big news for the city, which has a population of approximately 1.5 million,” Takeyuki says. He will be returning to Okinawa from January 15-18 to host workshops in Nago City and Tokushiki Island known for its coral and scuba diving. TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Some nice weather increased numbers out on the water but there is no doubt that some of these calls for assistance could have been avoided by boaties being better prepared. Courses such as the Day Skipper will
cover aspects of fundamental seamanship that all boaties (and regular crew) should be aware of. Content includes the sort of equipment you should have on board, rules of the road, basic navigation, planning your trip and dealing with emergencies. The VHF Radio Operator course covers the correct use of a core piece of safety equipment – the VHF Radio. But some may question why they need to bother with a marine VHF radio when they have a cellphone on board. Here are some of the key advantages: • A radio allows you to broadcast a message that can be heard by hundreds of boaties compared to just one person via a cellphone. This is a critical factor in an emergency. • Marine VHF Radio Coverage is generally much better than cellphone coverage on the water. • You’ll also find your mobile will be working harder to stay connected so you can expect a much shorter battery life. • Marine environment is a harsh one – most radios are designed to cope and are at least splashproof if not fully waterproof. Even with your mobile in a plastic bag, a purpose built VHF will generally be far more reliable. However we’re not born with the knowledge needed to use a radio effectively. The best situa-

ith the fine weather over December, it was packed out on the water and so was a very busy end to 2017 for Coastguard volunteers. December was particularly notable due to the Coastguard Operations Centre taking 17,066 Trip Reports and requests for assistance – over 1000 more than any other December on record. The two busiest days (the 30th and 31st of December) saw boaties make a combined 3213 radio calls to the Operations team; at its peak, 211 calls were made in just one hour in the morning, averaging out to 3.5 calls every minute. It’s great to have more and more boaties keeping in contact with Coastguard, but unfortunately December was also notable for the number of incidents attended. Coastguard volunteers assisted at 335 incidents – a full 31 more incidents than any other December, ever. To say Coastguard volunteers were busy is an understatement!

ith a double round of Jeff Crowe Cup over the weekend, Auckland Premier Cricket have wrapped up the action in round six and seven. Howick Pakuranga had an ideal weekend winning both of their fixtures. On Saturday, Howick Pakuranga played host to Eden Roskill, with the home side putting in an excellent performance to secure the victory. Eden Roskill batted first, Barrington Rowland (89*) looked comfortable at the crease scoring runs whilst his partners found the going more difficult. Danru Ferns (3-35) and Donovan Grobbelaar (3-26) ripped through Roskill’s batting lineup leaving Rowland as the lone solider for Roskill. Roskill finishing their 41 overs 187/8 with Rowland finishing 89 not out giving Roskill something to bowl at. Bill Walsh (69*) and Daniel Young (66) eased the pressure, putting on 121 runs for the first wicket to put Howick Pakuranga firmly in the driver’s seat. Donovan Grobbelaar (21*) came

ith World WBO boxing champion David Parker signed to face WBA and IBF champ Anthony Joshua at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on March 31, it would have been more appropriate to have held it a day later on April Fool’s Day. For that was the best way to describe some of the trash talk Parker and his promoter David Higgins engaged in when attempting to denigrate the powerful Englishman. It’s a shame because Parker has always impressed as being a good guy who preferred to let his fists do the talking before he called Joshua the steroids king in retaliation to Joshua jokingly dubbing him the “king of pies”. Later he admitted he didn’t know whether the chiselled Joshua did take steroids but said his physique suggested he might. The facts are that, as amateurs, Joshua went on to win the 2012 London Olympic super heavyweight gold medal whereas a disappointed Parker failed to make the New Zealand team. As a professional however, under the guidance of David Tua’s former manager Kevin Barry, he has a fine 24-0 unbeaten record. But he has not been so impressive in recent defences which went the full 12 rounds.
