For three weeks leading up to the final night on November 9, Unkovich will be attending women’s forums, tea ceremonies and visiting universities in Tokyo as part of her pageant duties. The audience at Divas and Divos, Operatunity’s Daytime Concert at St Columba Church were treated to some of the best operatic voices in the business. The Three Tenors of New Zealand, Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua, Derek Hill and Kalauni Pouvalu were outstanding with their powerful voices, rivalled only by sopranos Amanda Atlas and Susan Boland who were pitch perfect. The performers were all accompanied by the talented principal repetiteur for New Zealand Opera David Kelly. The concert played soaring tributes to the likes of Luciano Pavarotti, Maria Callas, Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo, all opera superstars. Adding a different note to the concert was humour, film clips, interesting anecdotes, arias and ensembles that made these singers famous. The Three Tenors were a popular operatic singing group during the 1990s and early 2000s, consisting of Spaniards Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and the iconic Italian Luciano Pavarotti. Interestingly, there were times when the Operatunity singers would share a short clip of the maestros including Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas, Pavarotti, Caruso and Mario Lanza – and then take over singing from the clip – demonstrating well that these singers are a match to contend with.

mbattled MP Jami-Lee Ross has quit as Botany’s Member of Parliament during a dramatic press conference in which he defended himself against a “corrupt” Simon Bridges. Ross has reiterated that he is not the leaker of the party leader’s travel expenses, an accusation which has snowballed into a full-blown political brawl between the two politicians. He accused Bridges of having committed several breaches of the Electoral Act when allegedly manipulating party donations. Ross was due to lay a formal complaint with police yesterday where he also handed over a voice recording as evidence to support his claim (at the time of going to print the recordings had not been handed over). “It is unlawful to file a false return,” Ross told reporters in Parliament this morning. “I believe Simon Bridges is a corrupt politician. “The National Party has broken the law at the instructions of Simon Bridges.” Ross resigned from the National Party and from his role as MP for Botany today forcing a by-election. He announced he will stand as an independent in the ensuing by-election. He said the by-election will be a referendum in which voters could decide. “I believe he (Simon Bridges) is dishonest. I’m speaking out now. New Zealand deserves better from the national Party,” he told the media. “I can no longer serve in a political party lead by a corrupt politician.” Ross says Bridges launched a smear campaign against him after he questioned several of Bridges leadership decisions. Ross says the campaign “to push [him] out” ramped up three weeks ago when he was accused by Bridges of harassing four women, but said when he asked for details and evidence he was not given any. “[Simon Bridges] told me that if I kept asking for natural justice that it would not be just four women, he could get 15 women,” Ross said. Ross said the news of such allegations was “devastating”. This prompted Ross to take medical leave from parliament two weeks ago, inflaming innuendo around Ross and the leak. Bridges has since down played the harassment allegations, saying it was “inappropriate behaviour” on Ross’ part rather than harassment. “I am now medically well again,” Ross told reporters. He says his contract now is with the people of the Botany electorate. “I have fought for my community,” he says. Ross says he is confident he can win back the Botany seat on a track record of 15 years. Bridges addressed Ross’s allegations in his own press conference, flanked by senior members of the National Party. He referred to Ross as a lone wolf MP who did not have the

best interests of New Zealanders in mind. He said the National Party Caucus unanimously voted to expel Ross. Bridges also rejected the allegations Ross has made around the handling of political donations. “I invite Jami-Lee Ross to take these matters to the Police and I invite the Police to investigate them fully and promptly. They will find the allegations are baseless,” Bridges said in a press release. “We as a caucus are going to now draw a line under this. We will be resolutely strong and focused on the things that matter to New Zealanders.” Ross’s explosive allegations follows an announcement from Bridges on Monday that Ross was identified as the person likely to have leaked his travel expenses, an accusation which Ross fiercely denied. Bridges told media that “The report states that the evidence identified points to Jami-Lee Ross as being the person who sent the anonymous text message.” Bridges says he, alongside deputy leader Paula Bennett, visited Ross before the press conference to discuss the report and “gave him an opportunity to respond”. Bridges says he “was not satisfied with [Ross’] explanation.” The National Party leak investigation inquiry findings stated that Ross may be the leaker but cannot confirm with certainty.

The report reads: “With one exception, our examination did not identify any evidence to suggest that any National Party MP is the text message sender.” “The exception is Mr Ross.” The report then outlined a number of phone calls made by Ross which may link him to the leak. “This evidence is not conclusive,” the report reads. Meanwhile, Ross pre-empted Bridges announcement by fiercely denying the accusation in a series of tweets. In one tweet Ross says, “Later today Simon Bridges is going to attempt to pin his leak inquiry on me. He cannot find who the actual leak is, so is attempting to use contact with my local Police area commander, and a journalist that is a friend (not Tova), as evidence that I am somehow involved.” “Some months ago I fell out with Simon. I have internally been questioning leadership decisions he was making, and his personal poll ratings which show he is becoming more and more unlikable in the public’s eyes,” he tweeted. “When I started to become expendable, I confronted him with evidence that I had recorded him discussing with me unlawful activity that he was involved in. Working on his instruction, he asked me to do things with election donations that broke the law.”

Village life takes the weight off for Ginny and Joe. Ginny and Joe May have hardly stopped smiling since they moved into their sunny serviced apartment at Howick’s Bruce McLaren Retirement Village. In fact, says Ginny, Joe’s sisters commented that they haven’t seen their brother smile so much in years, such is the transformation that’s occurred. The couple, who celebrated 63 years married on 1st October, had lived and run their engineering business at their Takanini home for almost as long but Ginny, 81, says it had started to become quite stressful. “We felt like we were living on a desert island! Everybody that we knew had gone and it became a very lonely place.” While Joe, 84, was reluctant to

leave his familiar surroundings, Ginny says it worried her that they had no-one nearby that they could turn to for help in the middle of the night. “I was starting to feel unsafe and it was actually very scary. “My daughter Annette had been saying for months we should move in here and then one day she texted to say she was taking us out to lunch.” Conrming Ginny’s suspicions, Annette brought them for lunch at Bruce McLaren where they checked out a couple of apartments on the higher levels. “He didn’t like going up in the lift and didn’t want anything to do with it so I had to say no.” Another apartment came up, this time on the ground oor, but

Joe still wasn’t interested. A few months later the same apartment came up again and this time he came and had a look. “The moment we walked into this apartment he said ‘this is better’. The sun was pouring in, he could see what was out this window and that door and next he said ‘what do you have to do to make it happen?! “The rest is history!” They both love the way their warm, cosy corner apartment faces out over the bowling green and village entrance where they can watch all the comings and goings. And Ginny loves the fact that the cleaning and linen is taken care of and there is a lovely cooked meal provided every day.

“There’s even a chap who mows the bit of grass out the front here, and we don’t have to do a thing!” she laughs. Mind you, that hasn’t stopped them trying out the village’s many activities of course. “We love the happy hour, they have had some great entertainment and we’ve been on a couple of outings – last week we went to Hampton Downs which was great. “When my sisters used to visit us at Takanini they knew we’d always be there but now they have to ring rst just to make sure we’re in!” she laughs. Adds Joe: “We haven’t got time for anything but enjoying ourselves. Anyone who could nd something to complain about

must have rocks in their head!” Both Annette and their son in Melbourne are thrilled that their parents are both enjoying the benets of retirement living, and the security and peace of mind that comes with it. “They’re absolutely delighted,” says Ginny. “Our son’s words were ‘you’re living in paradise!’ “It’s taken a lot of pressure oﬀ the family, a lot of the stress has just gone. “We used to have a caravan up at Arkles Bay and we’d go up there on a Friday night and you’d sit down and go ‘Ahhhh’. “And it was the same when we came here, we just relaxed and that loneliness was gone.” To discuss your retirement living options, phone Rose on 535 0225.

Papalii, who also starred in the Saint Kentigern College 1st XV and made the NZ U20s in 2016, has been named in the All Blacks’ 32-man squad for the 2018 Vista Northern Tour, which kicks off in Japan on November 3. Papalii gets his opportunity after an impressive Investec Super Rugby season followed by a strong Mitre 10 Cup season. He comes in following injuries to Sam Cane (neck surgery) and the unavailability of Shannon Frizell and Tasman loose forward contender Jordan Taufua. AMETI busway opens door to Plaza redevelopment

After years of waiting, GYP Properties Pte Ltd (GYPP) is pleased the design plans for the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) Eastern Busway have now been made public. With the release of the revised proposed plans, GYPP chief executive Stanley Tan says the company can now look to finalise its own designs for redevelopment of the Plaza and its four-hectare site. GYPP has owned the Plaza, which sits at the junction of Pakuranga and Reeves Roads and Ti Rakau Drive, since 2014. “We have been working on the Plaza redevelopment since we acquired the property, but until we had the final alignments with roading, and the bus interchange location and access points were locked down, it has not been possible to conclude our own designs,” Mr Tan says. “Masterplans incorporating significant residential and retail buildings together with commercial, accommodation and entertainment activities will be further developed over the coming months. They will be released once the resource consent process, currently anticipated to be sometime in 2019, is underway. However, we are pleased to confirm our three anchor tenants - Countdown, Farmers have renewed their leases and The Warehouse tenure runs through to 2035. “We look forward to participating in this transformation project from Plaza to Town Centre and on delivering quality housing options with modern retail facilities that focus on services, entertainment and food and beverage, with strong linkages to community amenities.” GYPP will be engaging with key stakeholder groups and the Howick Local Board over the next few months while its plans evolve.

sk this couple of six decades the secret to their long married life and both of them attribute it to tolerance. Jacob and Janice Abbenes will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on October 30. “We don’t always agree, we have different customs and ways of thinking but get accustomed to it,” laughs 90- year-old Jacob who has been living in the same property since 1959 where the couple brought up five kids. Jacob is Dutch and emigrated from Holland more than five decades ago. Janice is Australian and was on a working holiday with two of her girlfriends when cupid struck. Jacob claims it was a vacuum cleaner and a refrigerator that first got them together. “We were both flatting in the same house in Remuera, and we could hear the girls from across the bathroom door. I once heard her flatmate say ‘I can’t find my pyjamas’ so I shouted ‘you can take mine’.” “In those days we used to own a vacuum cleaner and fridge so the girls would come across to put their meats like sausages in our fridge and borrow our vacuum cleaner. That’s how we got to know more about each other as they would drop in regularly. We started cuddling once in a way... and that’s how it all starts,” he laughs. Janice says “it was cradlesnatching” since he is seven years older than her, to which

he responds, “I think women like men in uniform. I used to be a bus driver with Auckland Transport in those days and had a good uniform that she probably fell in love with.” Janice reveals that her flatmate got married to Jacob’s flatmate and that both the couples and their children are still in touch. “We were so busy bringing up our children that we didn’t have time for anything else,” says the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren. “Now when I talk to my grandchildren, I feel there was not much we gave our children,” she admits. “Our highlight was a once-in-ayear camping trip and we even took two of our neighbour’s kids along. Don’t know how we fitted seven in one car without seatbelts in those days” she laughs. “But now when I ask my grand-

son what he is doing in his school holidays, he says he is going to America,” she says. Parents of Chris, Gloria, Derek, Julie and Nigel, their daughter Gloria who is present at the interview, says it’s her youngest brother Nigel who now lives in Japan and regularly reads the Times online, who asked her “to contact the newspaper for a write-up on mum and dad’s wedding anniversary”. Her oldest brother Chris, who is now 59, was a paperboy for the Times around 45 years ago. “And all of us would sit in a circle and help him fold the papers,” she says. Jacob, who still mows the lawns at 90, says the secret to long married life and all their children getting along well with each other is contentment. “I’ve always been very content with what I’ve had, and so is my wife,” he says.

Lots of excitement on the Black Sea The World Chess Federation has a new leader – and a local man was in Europe as part of the elections. Every four years the World Chess Federation (FIDE) holds elections amongst its 189 member countries to determine a president and officials to oversee the running of World Chess. The elections were on October 3 in the Georgian Black Sea resort Batumi and were fiercely contested between three candidates. Local chess organiser Paul Spiller (who is also the vice-president of the NZ Chess Federation and president of the Oceania region) was Oceania’s first representative in a presidential election. “It was a tough campaign and in the end my ticket (cleanhands4fide) headed by (English chess Grandmaster) Nigel Short strategically withdrew just before the election to encourage our supporters to vote for Russian

former deputy Arkady Dvorkovich in a move to end the hegemony of Georgios Makropoulas and his supporters,” Spiller – from Howick - said. The strategy was timed perfectly and the Congress erupted in spontaneous celebration when the vote was returned as a 103 – 78 victory for Dvorkovich. “A new era has dawned with Arkady announcing an injection of 20 million Euros over the next four years with at least 12m of this earmarked for chess development. “I had a tough battle with my Oceania zone being split 4-4 between myself and my rival for presidency, Jamie Kenmure of Australia. “The decision was resolved by a vote of the full Continental Asian Assembly that I won by a vote of 29-19. I will now work with Arkady’s team to improve resources for chess development in Oceania.”

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Movie Night Fundraiser East Auckland’s popular local community radio station, East FM, is having another fundraising event, with an opening night screening of Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic of the late Freddie Mercury and rock music super group Queen. Freddie is widely considered as the world’s best rock singer and it was a sad loss to the music world when he died of HIV in 1991. Rami Malek plays the role of Freddie, and the cast will play several well-known characters such as David Bowie, Kenny Everett, Sir Bob Geldof, and the other members of Queen. The film is full of music by Queen, as well as some songs performed by Malek. Other tracks are played by Marc Martel who visited New Zealand recently with his group The Queen Extravaganza. East FM’s Promotion Manager, Tony King, says: “Fundraising is an essential part of keeping the radio station going and improving. “We rely heavily on our amazing supporters, as we continue to bring real local radio to this fantastic community. “Our two low-powered frequencies, 88.1FM and 107.1FM, have now gained listeners as far away as Newmarket. And of course, we have our famous broadcast caravan which lets us get out in the community, and the online listening at eastfm.nz enables people to listen in from anywhere in the world. “The station is run by a team of dedicated volunteers. Unlike traditional commercial stations, our community station plays a varied selection of music to provide something for everyone.” King concludes by saying: “We have a major announcement of a project which is currently underway that we can’t wait to share with everyone, so stay tuned!” The Bohemian Rhapsody fundraising movie night screening is on Thursday, November 1, at the Monterey Cinema, Howick. Her crocheted mohair hats for all ages and crocheted cotton hats for girls are in high demand and add that touch of colour and pizzazz to every outfit. Her finger puppets, busy bee cuddle cloths and handcrafted toys are a delight for youngsters and parents alike. Ninja turtle hats are popular with the young ones – “just put on your hat, grab your sword and despatch the baddies,” says Diane. Another Classy Crafter involved in toy making is wood worker extraordinaire, Bruce Richards who lives close at hand in Cook Street. Bruce’s interest in making wooden toys began with his own children 50 years ago and blossomed further when his grandchildren came on the scene. An engineer all his working life, Bruce works either on his engineering lathe and/or a wood turning lathe (which he developed himself) depending upon the end

The Mental Health Foundation is deeply disappointed that the Howick and Pakuranga Times have published the offensive and derogatory headline and article ‘Nutter set own room alight’. This article appeared both in print and online last week. We take issue with several aspects of this ill-informed, discriminatory piece. Although there is no specific mention of mental distress in the article, it plays on the stereotypes that too often marginalise and shame people who have experience of mental distress. those experiencing mental distress are rife throughout this article. Leading with the sensationalist headline ‘nutter’, the article labels the person as ‘crazy’ and a ‘nutcase’. Using this language in any context – but particularly in the media – can cause people who live with mental distress to feel shame and isolation. The repercussions of this are that people may be discouraged to seek the help they need and deserve out of fear of how they will be labelled and perceived. It may also prompt people to use this language against others, and goes some way towards legitimising it. Mental health problems will be experienced by one in five Kiwis this year, and language that stigma-

tises and excludes our people has no place in the media. Your article defines the subject as someone to be feared and associates this fear with their mental health. The young man is described negatively in relation to other “respectable” people, profiling him as a menace in contrast. Comments such as the “respectable” Kevin, encountered “no problems – until this issue with the alleged arsonist” and Kevin “tried to throw ‘the nutcase’ out” are discriminatory. The incident could have been reported effectively without the use of this stigmatising language. The New Zealand media have come a long way in recent years, and we, as a country, have led the way in reducing stigma and discrimination for people who experience mental distress. Unhelpful, ill-informed reporting such as this is a real backwards step. We hope that we can act together to remedy this type of reporting – for the better. Words have the power to change public perception. Changing, or removing, articles like these are a chance to improve them for the better. We urge you to carefully consider your editorial choices and responsibility when using quotes from other people. Phil Twyford is saying if Aucklanders don’t want state houses in their suburbs, then they should leave. I beg to differ. In fact, he is the one that should leave. It was his party that sat idly by and allowed the National Party to bring in thousands upon thousands of new immigrants knowing that Auckland didn’t have the houses to provide for them that caused the current housing shortage in the first place. If I were the residents of the character suburbs of Mt Albert and Mt Roskill, who will bear the brunt of his state houses (knowing that these houses certainly aren’t fit for any quality family life, lacking play areas sunlight, lawns and trees for children to enjoy. They can only add to Auckland’s recent downgrade for having the poorest quality of life of all New Zealand’s cities), I would be calling for a vote of no confidence in the Housing Minister.

Monster monopoly gobbles Highland Park, tenants are next In March it was announced Highland Park Shopping Centre had been purchased by Foodstuffs who revealed eventually bringing a new shopping option to the area. The move has meant many shops have had to go in advance of major redelopment works. Some remain, and they’re not happy. This is a note penned by five remaining retailers who wish to remain anonymous. Highland Park, arguably one of the last bastions of community shopping, where there is genuine sense of heart and soul, the retailers are artisans, have built trusted relationships, some of which span generations of customers, are being evicted. Foodstuffs have bought Highland Park, have decided to tear it down and evict the tenants. The commitment that these tenants gave exhibited to Highland Park and the wider community for because to foodstuffs, is sadly of no interest. The tenants are desperate to stay and to continue to serve their community, however they understand that big business is all about making money and that Foodstuffs can make more money if they are evicted. However, the tenants are saddened that the village like ambience will be replaced with glass, concrete and chrome. That their place in the community service will be replaced by ‘chain’ stores and their customers served by employees rather than proprietors, who come and go and the art of enduring customers relationship and service lost. While the tenants have leases, with up to nine years remaining, many of which were resigned shortly before Foodstuffs purchased Highland Park, there has been little or no direct communication with the tenants. Instead, as is the case with monopolies in New Zealand, they always get their own way and are accustomed to steam rolling anyone or anything in their way. To this end, Foodstuffs have appointed Colliers International to manage the Highland Park and

insist that all tenant communication must be via Colliers International. The goal being to create some distance between Foodstuffs and any messy publicity associated with the eviction of tenants and likewise disavow themselves of any questionable eviction tactics. While Colliers International are property managers for Highland park and the tenants in good faith continue to pay management fees, the management of the centre has been in sharp decline, with on site management presence axed, repairs and maintenance increasingly unattended and day to day communication primary limited to email, which often remain unanswered. It is the view of the remaining Highland Park tenants that the management fees that they faithfully pay per their lease, are ironically being applied to manage their eviction, rather than managing the centre for both their benefit and that of their tenants. To date the tenants main engagement with Colliers International have been with the company’s leasing brokers, who will personally benefit from a massive financial windfall, once the last tenant is evicted and they can begin leasing off architectural plans to ‘main street retail chains’. It is therefore no surprise that these brokers, when dealing with tenants, trade in fear, uncertainty and doubt, which for those tenants not familiar with an eviction process, creates huge anxiety and stress. In the main, communication of this nature has been verbal, eliminating any paper trail of the nature of this engagement with tenants.

Most of Highland Park retailers who remain are extremely unhappy with the state of affairs

There is no dignity in the process; the brokers have an agenda but no empathy for or understanding of how their actions impact the tenant’s lives and future. A common theme in the broker messaging is, agree to our token settlement now, or you will receive nothing once we serve a formal eviction notice. Some tenants have panicked, taken a token deal and left, placing pressure on the remaining tenants of having to trade amongst vacant shops. For the remaining tenants, this token settlement will cause them financial ruin. Their tenancy is their business, is their livelihood and their nest egg for retirement. If the tenants had to move and to start again, any settlement, at the minimum must include the loss of income while they re-establish themselves, the cost of moving, the cost of a new shop fit out. In the court of public opinion, this would seem reasonable but not to Colliers International of their master. The tenants feel bullied and fearful for their future. Ironically, not all tenants are being evicted from the Highland Park Shopping Centre. For exam-

ple ASB and Westpac banks will remain and likewise the TAB. It begs the question, is this because these tenants have the resources to stand up to a monopoly, which would make their eviction difficult and expensive? The small, independent tenants desperately need a champion, a champion that will stand up for them, a champion that has the power and conviction to stare down a monster monopoly. Unfortunately, unless the champion has political credentials or is a large benevolent corporate, these tenants are ultimately doomed and will face financial ruin after decades of service to their local community. The question remains, should this be necessary? Why is there not some protection or mechanism for calculating fair compensation for tenants when forced to leave a tenancy before the end of the lease? Why does the NZ government continue to put up with monopolies that dictate the terms of their constituent’s everyday lives? In the case of Foodstuffs, what is paid for food and the quality of this food? This article is a balanced, true and accurate account of the tenant’s plight at Highland Park, sadly they are unable to tell their own story because they are gagged, under the terms of their lease with Foodstuffs, to make public comment and risk legal action if they do make comment. But in the end, all they ask is to be treated fairly, with dignity and for there to be integrity in a genuine process of engagement, with Foodstuffs and Colliers International, to

either let them stay or to compensate them fairly if they must go by.

We take our responsibilities as a landlord very seriously and use experts to help us do that. While we believe we have been fair and have communicated clearly with existing tenants as we are able, the changes we are planning may not suit everyone and may alter a handful of tenants’ plans. We are totally happy to listen to their concerns and take these into account as our plans are developed.

Owler’s book to help our migrants L

ong-term Howick resident Clifford Owler arrived in New Zealand from Glasgow in 1956 on the HMS Captain Cook to work as a baker. Owler had taken advantage of the ‘Ten Pound Pom’ scheme – an opportunity to start a new and potentially exciting life in Auckland, on the other side of the world. Finding his ‘place’ in Auckland took quite a while, with many challenges and setbacks along the way. However, at 87 years old, Owler, can now look back with dignity and pleasure at having established a home in what he calls “our New Zealand”. A passion to help other migrants, has recently led Clifford to recently publish a memoir: The Ordinary Life of a Ten Pound Pom. In the book Owler shares his struggles and triumphs, in finding work, family and eventually home in Aotearoa-New Zealand. It is Owler hope that sharing his story will encourage new migrants to recognise the opportunities and beauty of their new country. Despite any initial setbacks they face, he hopes they

Three reasons National will axe the fuel tax

Youth MP selected for Botany electorate By FARIDA MASTER Even as the raging controversy of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross being accused by Leader of Opposition Simon Bridges, as the leaker of travel expenses was being discussed on every news channel, a speech competition to select a young MP for Botany went ahead on Monday evening at the Howick Bowling Club. While no one that evening knew the fate of the Mr Ross’ career to be decided by the National caucus the next morning, the young representatives from different colleges in the area- vied to represent him in Parliament as they spoke on the fiery topic `Should there be limits on free speech in a democratic society?’ Each Member of Parliament selects a young MP to represent them in Parliament for two days in July. The youth MP gets a chance to experience what is it to be in Parliament for two days. The young speakers were judged by a motley group of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Somerville, Rotary Club of Botany East Tamaki and Highbrook Rotary as well as the Lions Club and National Party loyalists. umber 1: The Tax is dramatically increasing the cost of living. We rely on fuel. Whether that is driving to work, picking up our children from school, or going to the supermarket. It is also essential for the movement of goods around the country. The groceries you pick up at the supermarket, the new phone you bought online which arrives by courier, the coffee you buy at the local café. When National talks about the cost of fuel we don’t just mean the cost it imposes on everyday New Zealanders filling up their car, we’re also talking about the increased cost that it puts on everything throughout the New Zealand economy. When the cost of an essential item like fuel increases at such a dramatic rate as we have seen this year it has a flow-on effect across the economy, and ultimately onto the consumer who ends up paying for the increased cost. Number 2: The Government doesn’t need the additional tax. Just last week the Government posted a record $5.5bn surplus. This surplus is largely

due to the prudent financial management that National provided during the last 9 years. We brought New Zealand through the Global Financial Crisis, the Christchurch and Kaikoura Earthquakes, and turned the NZ economy into one of the fastest growing in the world. We had to make tough decisions. But we left the books in good shape. The Regional Fuel Tax will raise $150m per year but against the context of a Government with massive cash surpluses, this additional tax clearly isn’t required. New Zealanders are being fleeced by a Government which only knows how to do two things. Tax and spend. Number 3: Transport can be funded without the increased fuel taxes The real reason why the Government has increased fuel taxes so dramatically has been because of their ideologically driven decision to build a tram line up Dominion Road. This project alone will cost billions of dollars and has stripped funding away from other needed transport priorities. In order to fill this hole, the Gov-

ernment has had to find other revenue sources for transport. National is committed to investing in infrastructure and building the transport system that Auckland needs (we funded the Waterview Tunnel and City Rail Link), however, a tram line up Dominion road to the airport is not the solution. It will take 60 minutes to travel from the Airport to the City (twice what it takes in a car), and will only be used by a small number of people who live near the tram line. Residents in Pakuranga won’t feel the benefit of this project and will be paying through the nose for it. Botany Downs Secondary College, Ethan McCormick from Howick College and Jordyn Trallop from Elim Christian College well articulated their thoughts on the pro and cons of freedom of speech, the audience voted by secret ballot. The contenders for the Botany seat in Parliament were asked about their priority and goals, should they be chosen as Youth MP for Botany. Kate Hatley from Botany Downs Secondary College was declared as a winner who will represent the Botany MP in Parliament. She said her priority would be to encourage diversity and focus on mental health. The Times had earlier written about Kate entering an international short film competition with her film From the Hospital Bed that captures some of her experiences of hitting rock bottom after falling off a skateboard and struggling to walk for two years. The speech competition was run by Mr Ross’s staff, while television camera crews patiently kept vigil outside his new home waiting to get a comment from the 32-year-old MP about the explosive tweets on Mr Bridges unlawful activity. As we go to press Ross has quit as National MP and is going to contest as an independent candidate from Botany.

hile the weather is difficult to predict with any certainty one week out from the race start, one thing that the organisers of the PIC Coastal Classic do know for sure, is that there is a fresh buzz about the iconic event. “We’re pretty happy to see nearly 170 boats entered already, with a few last registrations still trickling in,” said Commodore of the organising NZ Multihull Yacht Club, Greer Houston. Starting from 9:30am tomorrow (Friday, October 19), the 36th edition of this coastal yacht race from Auckland to Russell has experienced nearly 10 per cent growth from last year. With the biggest fleet in the last five years, participants will chase the fastest time of 5 hours 13 minutes which was set by Team Vodafone Sailing (now called Team Frank Racing) in 2014. “Last year we introduced a cruising rally division, and the feedback reassured us that this was a loved addition to the race” said Greer. “I’m glad we expanded on that concept because the cruising rally fleet has nearly tripled.” At 119 nautical miles long and as one of the biggest races of its type in the Southern Hemisphere, the fastest boats will reach Russell in as little as six hours, and the slowest will be cut short by the race deadline of 3pm Saturday. While Team Frank Racing will be on the water to defend their title, there are only a handful that are true contenders to strip them of the overall record. What is more at risk is the boat class records, and records per boat size, because there are an astonishing 83 boats that are new to the race, or haven’t competed in many years. PIC Coastal Classic The PIC Coastal Classic is New Zealand’s biggest coastal yacht race and has marked the start of the summer boating season for 36 years. The current race record was set by Team Vodafone Sailing (now named Frank Racing) in 2014 with a time of 5 hours, 13 minutes. Good turn out at Howickian Reunion

he Howick Bowling Club was filled with laughter and chatter as Howickians gathered together for their annual catch-up on Sunday, October 7. Many attending brought photographs that told a story of days gone by and shared memories of past generations – ‘Do you remember the iconic dairy at Mellons Bay Beach where the best ice-creams were to be had?’ ‘And what about Webster’s Store on Selwyn Road near Howick Beach?’ ‘Did you see Howick District High School photos…they are trying to put names to faces’ ‘I remember your grandfather

and your mother …’ ‘You were in my class weren’t you?’ It was good to see the former Mayor of Howick Morrin Cooper and Howick’s premier historian Alan La Roche in attendance together with many older identities and families who had a connection with Howick’s past. Acknowledgement was made of Howickians who have passed away in the last 12 months. Particular mention was made of Trevor Black who was a stalwart supporter of Howick and the Reunion over the years. A delicious array of home baking brought by the ladies, was there

for everyone to sample. Retiring convenor and maker of scrumptious sandwiches and cakes, Pamela Taylor, handed the reins to new convenor Gay Bevan. Pamela was congratulated and acknowledged for her considerable contribution in keeping the reunion to the fore. City of Sails Chorus picks up silver medal The City of Sails Chorus – which has many members from the Howick/Pakuranga area has taken second place in the national men’s barbershop harmony contest in Tauranga, its best result in seven years. The contest pits choruses from around New Zealand against each other, each having to sing two songs which are assessed by a panel of international judges.

The chorus performed “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, and Elvis Presley’s “Love Me” in their award-winning performance. The gold medal was awarded to Wellington’s Vocal FX chorus, with the Manawatunes from Palmerston North taking the Bronze. Chorus president Warwick Jones was thrilled with the result. “The hard work that we have has put in over recent weeks has paid off. We couldn’t be happier,” he says. Local man Richard Hedley has been a member of the chorus for 15 years and says, “The camaraderie of all singers from across the country marks out this annual contest, held in a different city each year, as special. Our chorus is about enjoying what we do and coming second against strong competition is the icing on the cake this year.” Father and son Bryce and Samuel Turner have been members of the chorus for more than four years, Samuel being currently the youngest member. “There is something quite unique about hanging out with a diverse group of guys, practising and perfecting music that is ultimately a very precise blend of just four parts. It is hugely rewarding after all the practise, to be able to deliver a really great performance and see the audience really enjoying it. This year the judges obviously enjoyed it too.” The Turners also sing together in a barbershop quartet that also had great success in the recent competitions. The City of Sails Chorus has long been an active participant in Auckland’s community choir scene. Its 40 members are of all ages and come from all over the Auckland region. “What unites us is a love of close harmony, and the opportunity to contribute to the community through music, while not forgetting the importance of having fun at the same time,” says Jones. Musical director Richard Harker says that the chorus has a busy season of Christmas carol performances coming up, and is actively seeking new members. “We offer singing coaching from beginner through to accomplished levels, in a friendly and fun environment. Benefits of regular check-ups: • A professional clean at least twice a year is necessary to remove calculus – calcified spots – that are hard to remove from teeth by brushing and flossing alone • Regular check-ups will help detect the early signs of gum disease and any other oral health issues experienced with ageing • Dentists can help prevent problems associated with dry mouth by recommending appropriate methods or treatments to restore moisture in your mouth • Regular visits can also help detect and replace weakening old restorations. The introduction of fluoride in drinking water, and the use of fluoride toothpastes have played a significant role in the reduction of decay in all age groups. The belief that fluoride only benefits children is not true. Fluoride helps prevent decay in all age groups. Gum disease, dry mouth, sensitivity, root caries, weakening old restorations, and missing teeth

are some of the common oral health issues experienced with ageing.

Dry mouth or Xerostomia is a condition where the mouth becomes very dry due to reduced saliva flow. People suffering from dry mouth are more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and soft tissue irritation for those who wear dentures.

Root Decay

As we age our gums may recede due to the damage caused by hard brushing and gum infections. Receding gums causes the exposure of the root surfaces of teeth. They absorb stains readily and are not as resistant to decay as the rest of the tooth. When decay occurs, the root becomes softened and darkly stained.

hen most of us think about retirement, we tend to think about the ‘young-old’ years – from 65 to around 80 or so,” explains Bonnie. “We don’t tend to think about what would happen if we live to 90 or 100 – and what we want to get out of that stage of life.” These days, the number of people living into their 90s or even into their 100s is growing rapidly. What’s more, it’s inevitable that the longer you live, the higher your chance of having some sort of health or disability issue. That’s why Bonnie believes it’s crucial to ask yourself ‘what strategies do I need to enjoy life and what’s my attitude going to be?’ It can be a real challenge for people to stay positive if they do have health issues. “It is normal to grieve for the things you have lost,” says Bonnie. But she believes that this is where attitude comes in to play. “For example, being told you can’t drive any more is upsetting, but you can either stay at home feeling sad or you can think, “okay, I can’t do that, but what else can I do? Sure, you’ll have to plan a bit more and be more reliant on others, but you can still get out there and enjoy life.” The other thing that can really help is to learn to accept support. “Independence can be overrated,” says Bonnie. “Independence isn’t about having no support, it’s about continuing to have a say in your life. I suggest to many older people that they just get the support they need to lead a good

life. Retirement ranks as one of the more stressful events we face in our lives. The American Institute of Stress lists retirement as the 10th most stressful life event, coming in behind events such as death of a spouse and close relative, marriage, divorce and separation, being fired from work, personal injury and being imprisoned. Research around retirement has identified some of the factors that make retirement a positive experience. Four key elements have emerged from studies where those 80 years and over were asked what they found enjoyable about retirement. These included: • Social Networking • Activities • Creativity • Learning Maintaining old social networks and building new ones is important for your physical and mental health. Memory and cognitive function are also thought to be protected by social interactions. If you are not currently actively participating in your community – consider setting this as a goal for yourself to substitute for the potential reduction in social contacts associated with retiring from a workplace. Joining a club, or a class or group in your area. Search online or check with the academic institutions, community centres or local libraries. Taking up new activities provides the opportunity for both physical and mental exercise. Activities like dancing, bridge, mah-jong, tai chi, golf or volunteering. Volunteering your time to a good cause can extend your contacts, particularly if this is based around your interests.

Activating your creative side by taking up a creative past-time assists brain health. This can involve taking up painting, gardening or hand crafts. Keeping your mind active through life-long learning keeps your mind active and contributes to brain health. Activities like learning a language or taking up playing a musical instrument or exploring new subjects of interest to you. Ensuring that you get enough sleep and that your sleep pattern is not disturbed by any stress related to retirement. Quality sleep improves our mood, sharpens the mind, gives us energy to approach our busy lives and sleep is essential for memory. Getting your body into a sleep-wake cycle by getting up at the same time each day. Aim to get over 7 hours sleep per night. Exposing yourself to sunlight each day or sitting by your window if it is too cold to go outside. Exercising each day – but avoid exercising within 2 hours of bedtime. Making your evening meal a light meal that is not too spicy. Avoiding stimulants that keep you awake: Caffeine, alcohol and tobacco will keep you awake. e’re all embracing spring, and not just because of the warmer – and most welcome – termperatures. Spring encourages to get outdoors a lot more, to use our garden spaces, our decks and balconies, irrespective of size. Spring gets us to take another look at our gardens, little and large. Lowest sales volumes in 8 months a result of extremely low listings T

he low number of new listings in July has meant that the number of houses sold in New Zealand during September decreased by -3 per cent year-on-year. This was the lowest level number of properties sold since January this year, according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), source of the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand. The number of properties sold across the country fell from 5674 in September 2017 to 5506 in September this year – 168 fewer properties. This is the lowest for the month of September since September 2011. For New Zealand excluding Auckland, the number of properties sold decreased by -3.3 per cent– 133 fewer properties when compared to September 2017 (from 4,023 to 3,890). In Auckland, the number of properties sold decreased by -2.1 per cent or 35 fewer properties, from 1651 in September 2017 to 1616 in September 2018. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “Traditionally there is a lag of about 6 weeks between significant movements in listings and sales results. With July’s listings down by 5.4 per cent year-on-year

and an all-time low level of listings in seven regions, it’s little wonder that September’s sales volumes were so low. “There simply weren’t as many properties for sale resulting in a very quiet start to spring. “However, with August and September’s listing numbers up 0.1 per cent and 11.7 per cent respectively, it is expected that October and November’s sales volumes will be much stronger – particularly as people want to sell ahead of Christmas,” continues Norwell. Across the country 12 out of 16 regions saw a fall in volumes with 6 of those regions experiencing double-digit decreases.

Looking at the national picture, median house prices across New Zealand increased 5.9 per cent yearon-year from $525,000 in September 2017 to $556,000 in September 2018. Auckland’s housing market has continued its now predictably stable pattern, with a median price of $850,000 the exact same price as September last year. “There are now seven regions across New Zealand that have median prices in excess of the half a million-dollar mark with Northland the newest region to go over this level. “Additionally, there are already three regions that have exceeded the $600,000 median mark and with Nelson’s median sitting at $592,000 it may not be too far away until we have a fourth region edging over the $600,000 mark,” points out Norwell. “With our population growth and demand for properties continuing to exceed the supply of housing stock, prices are likely to continue increasing in the short to medium term. Auckland saw the median number of days to sell a property increase by 2 days to 39 days (up from 37 in September 2017). This is the lowest median days to sell since April this year.

Auctions were used in 14.5 per cent of all sales across the country in September, with 798 properties selling under the hammer – this is down slightly from September 2017, when 14.8 per cent of properties (798) were sold via auction.

Inventory

Testing a Tesla just the business By Reay Neben

y sales manager made an announcement to me that Tesla had offered Brian and me a test drive for the weekend. How ridiculous, I thought. I am a petrolhead and although I did know of Elon Musk, I had no idea or any interest in a vehicle that operated by battery. I love my battery-operated chainsaw and blower but a car was a totally different concept. Okay, I said, I will give it a go. I was asked if I wanted a saloon or an SUV so I decided, in for a penny, in for a pound - I would have the big SUV. The Tesla representative sent through the pick-up details and off we toddled to Karangahape Road in the city on a busy Friday afternoon to pick up said vehicle. The showroom is magnificent and, to my surprise, there were lots of people in there looking at the vehicles on display. Apprehension was setting in now and then I was told that the SUV I was to drive was the top-of-therange Model XP100D with a price tag of $206,000. We were taken down to this basement area - where vehicles can come for a rapid recharge - and there was this black, beautiful vehicle that was to be ours for the weekend. The representative went through all the details and also set the computer or the touch screen to my requirements. Well, drive mode, I had three choices - Chill, Sport, Ludicrous.

The model in question was the XP100D worth more than $200,000 and (inset) Reay Neben loved her test drive.

It was thought the best option for me was chill. Thank goodness for that. After about half an hour of enlightenment about this space-age machine, it was time for a test drive. Great... 2.30pm, Friday, K’ Road and now a thunderstorm loomed too in which to test drive a battery-driven vehicle. I was a little apprehensive as I seated myself behind the wheel, Brian in the back and Kelly (the Tesla representative) seemingly quite calm in the front passenger seat. The first thing I noticed was the huge touch screen with every detail

needed to run the car, connect to the internet; actually, everything you could imagine. Sitting in the driver’s seat, the windscreen (if that’s what you would call it) was one piece of glass from the bonnet to the middle of the roof. Just fabulous. Off I set; car in drive (chill mode) and, with no noise or effort. It took me a few minutes to adjust to the driving and then it was so easy ... a vehicle with every luxury and just so simple to drive. The drive home (in the thunderstorm, Friday afternoon) on the southern motorway was a breeze and I did have a chance to test the

speed and the quiet pick-up to 100km/h. I cannot imagine what the 0 to 100 would be like in ludicrous mode because in chill mode it was like a jet plane taking off. So fast and so smooth with no noise! I stopped at the lights at Karaka and looked to my left and stopped next to me was the same vehicle as I was driving and the man waving, thinking that I was a proud owner, like him, enjoying my love of this vehicle. The weekend went so fast and the drive into the city on Monday was with my mind completely changed about electric vehicles.

I now understand the Mercury Energy TV advert where the two old guys leave the rest home in the huge 1957 Ford Fairlane sports car and show the power of the take-off at the lights, beating a (petrol) muscle car. I did that and it was such fun. This vehicle is not only for the young and trendy but also can be well-enjoyed by the older group who love luxury cars and not paying the current ridiculous petrol charges. More BMW for less

MW can build a decent motor car, but its accountants should go back to math class. Case in point: BMW New Zealand is offering a Shadow Edition of its hot M140i hatch that’s got a bunch of extra kit. This is special edition model that was developed by BMW internationally, not a local initiative where the M140i has optional extras bolted on it at the dealership. It has more safety and comfort features, along with cosmetic enhancements that include black kidney grilles, black headlight

trims, and a new alloy wheel design. The $8000 worth of goodies are Adaptive LED headlights; Driving Assistant; a Harman Kardon sound system; Professional spec navigation system with iD6; front and rear Park Distance Control (PDC); and Speed Limit Information. That’s pretty straightforward. It’s not until you check BMW’s price list that things get weird. The standard M140i hatch is still available for $82,000, whereas the Shadow Edition has a recommended retail price of $69,900.

So, $82,000 plus $8000 of extra stuff equals $69,990. We checked that with BMW’s PR bloke who confirmed that the Shadow Edition price does indeed start with a ‘6’, not an ‘8’. Normally, such a deal would suggest that the base car isn’t much chop and the company wants it gone, but that’s far from the case. M140i’s fun factor comes in the shape of a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six that develops 250kW, but more importantly, a hefty

500Nm of torque. Rear-wheel drive M140i will blast from rest to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and have the driver grinning in a lot less time than that. The engine howls, and there’s cool bark from the exhaust when you upshift at the redline. You can go deep into a corner, brake hard, and then launch out thanks to the huge amount of grip. This is where BMW’s math makes sense: big engine plus small car equals rapid acceleration. You could even say that it’s priceless.

With its M Sport suspension, M140i sits around 10mm lower than a mainstream 1 Series.

New direction for Howick Golf Club

ew direction for the Howick Golf Club in 2018 has seen the employment of Rory Moor as the general manager. A previous Head Professional, elite golf coach, mentor, ex PGA Tour player and board member of the NZPGA, Moor brings a wealth of golfing knowledge management to the position. The illustrious Wentworth Golf Club, the site of the World Matchplay and European Masters is where he started the game in the UK moving onto the emerging European Tour with the likes of Nicklaus, Trevino, Palmer and also competed alongside so many of the greatest players of the 80s and 90s that included New Zealanders Sir Bob Charles, John Lister, Frank Nobilo and Greg Turner. Working at Wentworth was a great experience alongside ex Ryder Cup player and Captain Bernard Gallacher, playing with the elite of the game and the likes of TV personality Bruce Forsythe and International soccer guru Danny Blanchflower before spending years perusing a professional playing career in Europe and Down Under. Some small event victories came through a 10 year playing career during which time he emigrated to New Zealand and found his home in Howick where he has remained, time during

Zheng makes Youth Olympics team from October 9 – 11 and the Mixed Gender Team championship from October 13 – 15. Zheng’s star is on the rise with a focus which won him the South Island Under 19 Championship earlier this year. The 16-year-old started the final round two shots behind, to then shoot seven-under 66 and win by an impressive two strokes. He recently won the Ryan Moore Junior Championship in America which was a breakthrough result against a very strong international field, followed with a fifth-place finish at the IMG Academy Junior Worlds and a fourth at the ACDS Junior Championships.

Agnew’s Angle Shaun Johnson relished the extra room with some elusive runs but his kicks too often found the hands of Kangaroos rather than vacant spaces. While Australia clearly missed the experience and class of retired stars Smith, Cooper Cronk, Jonathan Thurston and Billy Slater, they still have a huge talented pool of players to choose from.
