t was a full house at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club last week Around 200 people turned up to a public meeting held by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown to discuss Auckland Transport’s recent traffic management proposals during the AMETI/Eastern Busway construction period. Brown says the meeting was a chance for the community to give their feedback on the proposed T2/ Bus Lane and Park and Ride service

Representatives from Auckland Transport (AT) were in attendance to explain how the proposals would be implemented. “Pakuranga is one of the most congested areas in New Zealand, with statistics indicating that Pakuranga Road is currently the sixth most trafficked stretch of road in the entire country,” says Brown. Brown, who is concerned with AT’s lack of public consultation on

the proposals, conducted a survey prior to the meeting which showed that 56 per cent of residents had concerns over the effectiveness of the T2/Bus Lane. He says the most common feedback was that the T2/Bus Lane would only be beneficial when in addition to existing lanes, and not when it removes a lane from general traffic. AT said it would be monitoring the T2/Bus Lane closely and would

make changes when and if they are necessary. The T2/Bus lane would only be implemented between Dunrobin Place in Highland Park and Gossamer Drive, AT representatives explained. The second part will run from Johns Lane and Ti Rakau Drive if deemed necessary. They revealed that turning bays in the T2/Bus Lane, allowing single occupant vehicles to turn left will

The BBQ, which carries a Lions Club plaque, was likely vandalised over the weekend of February 16 and 17. The Lions had spent several years raising funds – around $13,500 - and seeking appropriate consents to have the BBQ built with the assistance of Auckland Council at Eastern Beach. It has also raised the question of whether surveillance should be considered for the area at the southern end of the beach, beyond the last of the homes on The Esplanade and on the former camp site – a very popular area in summer. “We’re just devastated,” said Bucklands Beach Lions Club president

Flat Bush murder accused pleads guilty The man accused of murdering Flat Bush mother Xi Wang has this week pleaded guilty. Ephraim Beazley, her ex-husband, travelled from Rotorua on December 10 to east Auckland where he violently attacked Wang at her front door as she held their twoyear-old son in her arms, court documents have revealed. The Herald obtained a police summary of facts which reported that shortly after 10pm, Beazley arrived at Wang’s home in Flat Bush intending to kill her. Beazley knocked on the door and when Wang opened it, without speaking he stabbed her several times in the neck, body and legs. When he knew he had done enough to kill her, he fled the scene. He left their son in her arms, the Herald reported. He made his way on foot to Botany Town Centre where he called police and told them what he had done. Wang was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died later that night from her injuries. Beazley entered a guilty plea at the High Court at Auckland yesterday morning. He will be sentenced next month.

Stabbing, street fights at Tarnica Park By Farida Master

esidents of Tarnica Road, Northpark, have had enough. The anti-social behaviour of unruly teenagers at the park on Tarnica Road starts as early as 5pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Residents claim teenage gangs have had midnight brawls, driven dangerously on the curb and narrow pathways in Arrathorne Pl, knocked down rubbish bins after a fight in the park which has made the neighbourhood very unsafe. A stabbing incident a couple of months ago at Tarnica Park (also known as Bowscale Place Reserve) as a result of a brawl between two teenage gangs saw a 14-year old stabbed three times. Resident Gordon Luke says the gang fight was recorded on surveillance cameras by one of the neighbours. “She even called the police but they said they didn’t have enough resources to come over then. “Once the ruckus outside died down she walked over to the site and found this young lad who was staggering around the place. He had been stabbed.

“She called the ambulance and took him to the East Care Accident and Medical Centre and was told that they can’t do anything. He may die, they said. “She then called an ambulance and took him to Middlemore Hospital,” Luke said. Later the woman was threatened by the gang saying they would burn her house down. Another neighbour also witnessed the violence, but was summoned back into the house by his wife since the teenagers were carrying weapons and a baseball bat. It has now got to a point where residents find it unsafe

to use the pathway near the park that connects Tarnica Road to Botany. They say that seniors living alone in the houses surrounding the park are living in fear. “By 9pm it gets so dark that you can barely see what is happening in the park. If we are walking past the park we get abused and threatened by the youth gangs. And if confronted it is difficult to tackle the 16 and 17-year-olds who are quite strong.” Another resident said he can’t take his grandchildren to the park anymore. “There is broken glass everywhere and obscenities written all

over the place. I wouldn’t want my grandchildren to read it.” Police and community constables have visited the park on several occasions and suggested that lighting up the park may deter crime. Gordon and a group of neighbours is getting a petition signed by more than150 residents in the area. A public meeting will be held with the help of Botany MP Jami- Lee Ross on Saturday, March 9, 11am at Tarnica Park, to ask for lighting in the park. “I am helping the residents take their fight for funding for measures to keep their park safe to the Howick Local Board,” said Ross. “It was alarming to hear of the fights taking place in the middle of the night at Tarnica Park, particularly when weapons are being produced “The Local Board has funding for very initiatives like this. They need to take the community seriously when the safety of locals is being put at risk.” “Organising this community meeting with Luke is just the start. “I will be attending the Howick Local Board meeting with the Tarnica residents on March 18.”

More than $40,000 has been raised for a Clevedon family who lost everything in a devastating fire at the end of January. On January 21, local couple Tony Keals and Lorraine Blackwell arrived home as firefighters battled to get the blaze that claimed their home under control. The Givealittle page was set up by the Kawakawa Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade, who know the couple personally. Tony was a ‘life member’ of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, having volunteered for them for more than 30 years. Donations closed last week with a total of $42,117.81 raised by more than 300 generous donors. The Givealittle page description read: “Even though the local volunteer fire-fighters arrived at the scene soon after the 111 call was made, the fire was aggressive and engulfed the family home quickly; fortunately no one was home when the fire broke out. “Tony and Lorraine arrived while fire fighters got the blaze under control and watched helplessly as everything they had built up over the years burned to the ground…and then having the overwhelming sense of worries and sadness that came afterwards.” It said that the family’s home and contents were not insured, and the couple, who have three young children, were relying on the kindness of friends and family to get them through.

Summer crowds love car show By Nick Krause

ore than 10,000 people are estimated to have visited the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show on Sunday. Chairman of the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show Committee, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, said registrations were 25 per cent up on record 2018 numbers. “Our estimate is that numbers of public were also up 25 per cent. The estimate of more than 10,000 public is probably conservative as car drivers and some passengers means there are about 1600 people on site before one member of the public arrived.” There was a record number of registered classic cars and motorcycles - 1077. “We also had a classic car public parking area for the first time and had many more interesting cars parked there too,” Rev Waugh said. “We had about 130 volunteers involved including from East FM, local scouts, Howick MenzShed, Rotary Clubs, Howick Historical Village and LifeGrowth Community Trust.” More than 600 people attended the live day at the Howick Historical Village “The sponsorship support from the Howick Local Board to cover infrastructure costs is so important to the event and so appreciated by our community. Likewise, sponsorship from Times Newspapers, Protecta Insurance and NZ Classic Driver. “The weather was perfect and

With over 1070 vehicles on display, this year was the biggest yet and I want to congratulate Rev Richard Waugh and all the organisers and sponsors of this event for all their hard work in making it happen. “It was great to see so many people at Lloyd Elsmore Park enjoying the show and I look forward to continuing to support this event into the future. The proposals it suggested are wide-reaching and recommend a radical centralisation of core education services away from school Boards of Trustees towards Education Hubs. The proposal suggests creating 20 of these new Education Hubs, which would be run by Ministry appointees and have control over things like the hiring and firing of teachers, school property issues and school zoning. Five-year contracts are also proposed for school principals with the Education Hub in control as the employer, and the Board of Trustees having veto power. It’s not clear though whether Boards would have the power to retain a principal they prefer beyond the five-year contract, meaning high-performing and long-tenured principals

These changes are designed to help make our school system more equitable, however they take a one-size-fits-all approach whether the school is performing well or not. Local parents, teachers, school principals and trustees should be concerned with these proposals as they know best how to run their schools and we have some fantastic examples in Pakuranga of this at work. National agrees that we need to improve school governance, but not by taking away all responsibility for it from the schools themselves. As a whole, these proposals represent the largest potential reform of our education system in decades. With something this significant, National believes our local school communities deserve a chance to have their say, and we have planned more than 40 public meetings around the country to provide this opportunity.

Construction on the next stage of AMETI Eastern Busway Project between Panmure and Pakuranga begins in late April and is expected to take two years to complete. Some of the main changes that residents will see with this work is the transformation of the Panmure roundabout into a signalised intersection, road widening in parts of Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road, and the construction of a second bridge dedicated to cycling, walking and bus transport. This transformational transport project will provide better connections, faster journey times, and improved travel choice for East Aucklanders and those who travel through the area. ust off your running shoes and break out the – possibly green - activewear because the Howick Rotary Fun Walk and Run is back for another year! It started with only a couple of hundred people in 2005, but this year around 600 people are expected to take to the streets on Sunday March 17 – St Patrick’s Day - across the three routes on offer. Howick Rotary organising committee member Colin Monk says the event is a great way to get the whole family involved in keeping fit and healthy. The tracks cater for all levels of fitness – walkers or runners can choose from a 5.9km primary course, a 6.9km intermediate course, or an 8.1km extended course, with five water stations available on the way. Mr Monk says the event creates a friendly rivalry between local

primary and intermediate schools who compete to be crowned the winning school — and this year, with more schools entered than ever, that rivalry is sure to increase. With spot prizes on offer (the best selection ever, says Mr Monk) and a delicious sausage sizzle on completion, there’ll be no shortage of motivation to finish. Each participating child will also receive a medal at the finish line. All courses start and finish on Stockade Hill, so participants can soak up some post-run (and walk) views. Sponsors this year include The Bike Ride, Mitre 10 Mega Botany, New World Howick, Dilmah Tea, Chenery Memorial Trust, Howick Local Board, the Athlete’s Foot, and many others. One additional feature this year is a raffle run by Howick Rotary’s organising committee to

add to the fundraising activity, the main prize of which is an hour’s ride in a DeLorean – the car made famous by the “Back to the Future” film trilogy. Mr Monk also recognised the support provided by the Howick Local Board, as part of their keep healthy initiatives. The board provide funds to assist in the running costs. All proceeds go to the Howick Coastguard, and the Rotary Club of Howick covers all the costs associated with running the event. The more participants, the greater the amount raised for the Coastguard. ■■ The Howick Fun Walk and Run will be held at Stockade Hill on Sunday March 17 at 9am. We get a lot of questions about legal aid, who is entitled, how to apply for it and how to complain against a legal aid lawyer if you feel you are not happy with how your case is being handled. The Legal Aid Scheme is a Government fund for providing people with legal help when they cannot afford to hire a lawyer to represent them. Legal aid is available for people facing criminal charges, those with a civil legal issue or family dispute, as well as for Waitangi Tribunal claims. Legal aid is means-tested (on your income and property) so not everyone is eligible for legal aid. People who do qualify may have to pay a user charge and repay some or all of their legal aid costs. You can’t get legal aid for: divorce; problems that would not go to court; immigration matters (except for refugee matters); companies or groups of people (apart from occasional Waitangi Tribunal cases); reviews of Work and Income decisions; problems with schools, universities and other educational institutions; Disputes Tribunal cases; Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal cases. What you have to do to apply for legal aid will depend on whether you need criminal, civil or family legal aid. More information, as well as the

application forms, is available from the Ministry of Justice website. You can apply for legal aid even if you don’t live in New Zealand permanently, or are not a New Zealand citizen. If you’re unhappy about your legal aid lawyer and you are unable to resolve this by talking to the lawyer directly about your concerns, you may be able to change lawyers. If your lawyer is from the Public Defence Service, you can talk to the deputy public defender at the nearest Public Defence Service office. City Rail Link costs skyrocket

Please bring back the garage!

Re the City Rail Link (CRL) cost blow out from $3.8 billion Estimates have increased by $500 million and may increase $1b and they have not even started tunnelling yet I believe they are in dreamland. I understand the above-ground new rail system in Hawaii is only half completed and already has increased 100 per cent to $6.9b. I suggested an alternative rail improvement scheme with a terminal at Newmarket for the south and west line with a continuous shuttle to and from Britomart, cost almost zero dollars. All the tracks and platforms are in place. All it needed is some roofing extensions. It would not be perfect but would save the city from bankruptcy We quite simply do not have the population or money for the CRL. Sydney alone has more people than NZ and a lot more money. I was told passengers would not like changing trains. They obviously have not travelled overseas much Another urgently needed extension is widening the Britomart tunnel for the east line, something that should have been done when the tunnel was built. This will need to be done for efficiency even if the CRL is built.

Despite our making use over the years of the Steward Motors Garage at the top of our road, I always thought of it as a bit of an eyesore. Now, in its place is a proposed (and probably very neat looking) apartment building to house 70 people! I wonder what thought has gone into this crazy proposal? Why not a prison? It will be just as dangerous being right alongside not one, but two schools, namely Howick College and Cockle Bay School. To be anywhere near this area at opening and closing times of both schools is absolute madness as it is, without the addition of this proposed building. I cannot work out why there hasn’t yet been a fatality there as just about every parent drops off and collects their (single) child to/from the primary school. I cannot imagine principals from either school would be in agreement to having the building there either. Another major point is, can the infrastructure of this area cope? Have the fundamental facilities been looked into when 70 (plus) extra people will be using it? I doubt this. I, along with many, am totally averse to this proposal.

Celebrating unsung heroes The feel good story about the self motivated Litter Ninja Gui Chen picking up rubbish and keeping our roads and parks clean made a good read. Its ordinary people like him who do extraordinary things that need to be celebrated in our local papers. He is a shining example of unsung heroes like him in our community. Bless his soul for wanting to give back to NZ communities. We should take a page out of his book and get more senior citizen and migrant groups as well as school children to take on projects like that—it would go a long way in living up to our image of clean, green New Zealand.

The much-publicised recommendations of the Government appointed Tax Working Group (TWG) have finally come to light and purports to convince the Government or more importantly us citizens, that the tax system needs a radical overhaul with the introduction of a comprehensive capital gains tax. It is interesting that the three dissenters on the committee who said it was too difficult to implement for too little gain, are very experienced tax specialists, one of which is a former Assistant Commissioner of Inland Revenue. Shouldn’t that be pressing alarm bells? says Bernie. After 12 months of numerous submissions, debates in the media, rumours and conjecture, we are now being told that implementing what will be the highest rate of capital gains tax in the world will meet the Government’s primary objective of the TWG which was to establish a more balanced and fairer

tax system. That would be an admiral course for the Government if the current tax system was actually in need of a radical overhaul in the first place. In short the tax system is working well and the community is paying taxes on a fair basis that is covering government spending and reducing public debt. A capital gain tax at the marginal rate would in most cases be applied at 33% as it would be assessed in the year the asset is sold and added to the taxpayer’s normal income for that year. That’s pretty nasty considering that the tax will be applied to all income earning assets including investment properties, commercial properties, beach houses, businesses, shares and share portfolios, Kiwi Saver investment funds, farms and farming operators to name a few. Most would agree that investment properties, which have been in the limelight for some time, have warranted attention and there is some justification for perhaps ruling them as a business but the Government has already attacked that sector with the introduction of the Brightline Test and the proposed ringfencing of losses. The Brightline Test is a capi-

tal gain tax in disguise so you could argue that this sector has been addressed. Bernie believes that the exemptions from CGT such as the family home and a few personal assets like art work, antiques, classic cars, jewellery etc have been left out probably because these types of assets are just too problematic. Attacking assets like the family bach, the farm and the family business, is particularly grating. Many of Bernie’s clients have taken years of hard work risking everything, creating employment, and contributing taxes. To tell my client’s that they will now be faced with a 33% tax when the asset is passed on to a new owner to make the tax system “fairer” is not a sustainable argument. It is difficult to advise clients on their investment decisions and general plans with these dark clouds of uncertainty now on the horizon says Bernie and perhaps the Government should take heed of the old French proverb and hopefully leave things where they are?

n East Tamaki caravan and recreational vehicle (RV) business has been named New Zealand Dealer of the Year at the Jayco Australian-New Zealand dealer conference in Melbourne. The South Auckland Caravan Centre picked up four awards in total. As well as the NZ Dealer of the Year – which the company has won 10 times – it won the 200 New Sales Club Award (more than 200 sales), Outstanding Achievement Award and Wells Fargo Award (based on turnover) out of Australia and New Zealand. It’s an enormous step up from the company’s humble inception 14 years ago. Owners Tania and Glen O’Donnell purchased South Auckland Caravans Ltd in 2005, with the Jayco Auckland agency. Jayco is the number one selling RV brand in Australia where they are manufactured.

“We had three staff and owned two caravans. Our original site was in Takanini which had been there for 50 years,” said Tania. “In 2013 we moved to East Tamaki to a bigger site at 53 Springs Road and we have been progressively growing as a business.” South Auckland Caravans now has 22 staff and three locations – also on Springs Road. The expansion over time was necessary as they outgrew the current 5800sq m site which can hold 80-odd RVs/caravans. The company easily qualified for the 200 New Sales Club Awards registering 262 units delivered although there were a total 302 actually sold. On top of that, they also sold around 250 used units. To qualify for The Outstanding Achievement Award, companies must have experienced sales increases of more than 20 per cent. South Auckland Caravans hit the 32 per cent sales

growth mark. And there doesn’t appear to be any sign of business slowing. Trends are showing retired and semi-retired people are selling their homes and choosing the freedom of a luxury RV. “We’re seeing couples who are committing to touring the country now while they still can,” said Glen. “They’re not just taking the money, we’ve had a professional couple opting for a complete lifechange.” Technology has also seen many changes to the RVs and caravans with modern units now fitted with ‘JHUB’ control panels which brings together next-gen recreational vehicle technology in one central, easyto-use interface. This week the company advances this tech interface further when it takes delivery of all new vehicles which will interact with mobile phones. “These are exciting times and it’s wonderful to continue to see the business grow,” Tania said.

Highbrook Rotary Fun Run raises more funds for Middlemore The sixth year of the Waipuna Fun Run, organised by Highbrook Rotary, was the largest yet. Over 620 runners registered for the event held at Pukewairiki Park in Highbrook on Wednesday, February 20 in the early evening. The event is run to raise funds for Middlemore Hospital and other local charities. The men’s 10km run was won by Luke Hurring in 40 minutes and the women’s by Danielle Ellis in 49m in what is a cross-country course. The two runners represented the ANZ team which was first home and winner of the team cup. First home for the women in the 5km run was last year’s winner Leah Anstis and in the men by another previous winner, Andrew Sexton. Is there gold in those hills? M

any early settlers saw the Whitford hills as similar to Coromandel rocks after gold was discovered at Coromandel in 1852 by Charles Ring. One “enterprising” Howick man filed a gold sovereign into the sand at Howick Beach but it was analysed as the same as a sovereign and it became a false claim. Charles Ring received a £500 reward and promptly bought land near Kohukohunui, the top of the Hunua Ranges which can be seen from Stockade Hill. Gold was the magic ingredient to boost immigration, stimulate the economy and create richer lives for everyone. Maori of Coromandel thought that gold found would belong to them under the Treaty of Waitangi. Instead the Government decided to give them a monetary grant which was accepted. A few veins of quartz gave many men exciting dreams of rich pickings and wealth. In January 1852, 20 men on a schooner heading for Waiheke, stopped at Howick to buy spades, picks and shovels from a Howick storekeeper. Gold nuggets had been found on Waiheke in 1842. acres of wheat and oats on the Pakuranga flats “he was making money fast”, selling it to the Australian mills supplying the goldfields. But Vicesimus Lush in his journal complained that flour and pork had doubled in price due to gold-fever in Australia. He was forced to grow more of his own food. Some lucky early settlers at Maraetai picked up nuggets of gold in local streams. There was only one local gold-rush when gold was found in the Waikopua Valley between Whitford and

Maraetai. William Broomfield, who lived nearby, bought land for a school. This was later used as the cemetery. The Howick Arms publican Peter Brady bought a hotel site. In 1868, when the Thames goldfield opened, there were soon 100 hotels in Thames. Thames was the second largest city in New Zealand after Dunedin. But the gold-fever fizzled within a few weeks. Fencible soldier-settlers were not allowed to leave for the goldfields as they were still with their seven year contract. To

ANNIVERSARY leave had serious consequences. Goldminers are extreme optimists. The author has researched more than 25 exploratory mines in the Whitford-Maraetai area. William and Richard Trice, the first settlers of Whitford, bought 600 acres and found specks of gold in quartz veins. Soon they had two mines, one 150 feet long used from 1850 to 1870. There was a lady in Howick who had a wedding ring made from their gold mine. They had an iron Berdan crusher and a horsedrawn stamper battery. William Brady and George & William Cooper had a 500 foot mine at Magazine Bay. William Shaw, Turner brothers, the Edwards brothers and others all worked hard without success. But the piles of rock from Trice’s goldmining activities were used by Manukau County Council for road metal. Their mine is now the Waste Management–Fulton Hogan quarry and landfill in Whitford. Local farmers claimed that if the Trice brothers had spent more time farming they would have made a better income than fossicking for gold. Six designs submitted for memorial Concept designs for a new National Erebus Memorial have now been submitted to Manatu Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage. The six designs are available on the Ministry for Culture and Heritage website: www.mch.govt.nz/nationalerebus-memorial/final-designs. The Erebus National Memorial spokesman is Howick’s Dr Rev Richard Waugh. “Six anonymous design teams selected in December were asked to submit concept designs,” says Ministry for Culture and Heritage chief executive Bernadette Cavanagh. “The designers were provided with comments from the families of the Erebus victims and given the opportunity to talk to some family members in this phase of the process. “Feedback from the families on the designs will be presented to the National Erebus Memorial Design Panel when they meet in March to evaluate the designs.” The panel will be recommending the finalist to the Prime Minister. “It’s a significant milestone and provides a real sense of the progress of this project.” Ms Cavanagh also announced that two Erebus family members (yet to be selected) will be joining the design panel in March. The 40th anniversary of the Erebus airplane crash will be marked in November this year, with a memorial planned to be established in early 2020. Costs rising faster than rental prices The latest Consumer Institute cost of living survey shows that general costs in providing rental property have increased faster than rental prices. In addition, wage increases were 66 per cent higher than rental price increases. “Rental property providers have been keeping rental costs down when many of their costs and the price they have to pay for new rental properties is increasing at a faster rate” said NZ Property Investors’ Federation executive officer Andrew King. “It is also pleasing to see that wages are increasing at a faster rate than rental prices which will continue to help tenants with their living costs”. House prices also increased at a faster rate than rental prices, reducing the return on buying new rental properties and making it more difficult to increase the supply of homes for tenants, he said. The consumers list shows that four of the top items that increased in price over 2018 were directly related to providing rental homes for tenants. ■ Home insurance: +15.2 per cent ■ Petrol: +11.1 per cent ■ Vehicle insurance: +7.2 per cent ■ Local authority rates: +5.1 per cent ■ Construction costs: +3.6 per cent ■ Property maintenance: +3.5 per cent ■ Rent: +2.4 per cent The overall Consumers Price Index increase was 1.9 per cent. However median weekly wages increased by 4 per cent. Home ownership costs were 10th in the list of issues that respondents were most concerned about. This reflects the fact that home loans to first home buyers have increased from 10 per cent to 17 per cent over the last three years, while property investor loans have fallen from 35 per cent to 17 per cent over the same period, said King.

Buyers’ market hardens, lower sales

he Auckland property market has made its slowest start to a year in more than a decade as the market hardens towards being a buyers’ market. “The market has failed to gain any momentum since the holiday break. Sales numbers in February at 474 were the lowest in a month since December 2008, which was at the high point of the global financial crisis,” said Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson. In the first two months of the year, sales numbers at 1127 are down 10.4 per cent on what they were for the first two months of last year. “While sales activity was limited it had only a minimal impact on the average sales price which, at $918,496, was down less than $9000 (0.9 per cent) on that for January and $1000 (0.1 per cent) less than that for February 2018,” Thompson said. “The change in the median sales price for the month at $801,000 was more marked, being down $26,500 (3.2 per cent) on that for January and down $19,000 (2.3 per cent) on that for February last year.” Sale by auction remained the most common sales method, and across January and February two thirds of all auctions resulted in sales – either under the hammer or by direct negotiation prior to or post auction. “While sales figures for unconditional sales year-to-date are modest, in the last two weeks of February we sold more than 250 properties each week on

It underlines that the pipeline of potential sales is beginning to build,” said Thompson. “The market is progressively hardening into a buyers’ market with a number of vendors preferring to take their property off the market when they cannot achieve their asking price. “This trend can be seen in February’s data, during which we listed an additional 1563 properties yet at monthend we had 4660 listings on our books, only a 7.5 per cent increase on those for January.” In February, sales of property in the $2 million price category represented 2.7 per cent of total sales, sales between $1m and $2m 27.8 per cent of sales while sales in the under $500,000 price

category represented 12.7 per cent of sales. Sales of top end property tend to be lighter at the start of the year reflecting the low number of new listings over the holiday season. New listings in this price category start to show up in late February and early March. “Sales numbers in the lifestyle and rural markets were also low in February. Signed up sales (yet to go unconditional) were stronger in the south of Auckland than in the north where vendors were more prepared to accept the prices on offer,” he said. “Potential buyers in the lifestyle and rural market are showing an increasing awareness of the effect increasing building costs are having on prices and are seeing existing properties as a good option when compared to buying bare land and building a home.”

Howick Pakuranga Prems snatch vital win By JIM ALLNATT After losing the first day’s play against second-placed Suburbs New Lynn, the match had to be completed in one day and virtually turned into a battle for first innings points. Marie Raos Ray White HPCC skipper Bill Walsh won the toss and had no hesitation in inviting Suburbs to take use of a very good batting surface. It was a very tight battle right through Suburbs allocation of 50 overs with neither side getting on top of the other. Howick’s bowlers took two early wickets, one each to Donovan Grobbelaar and Mitchell McClenaghan. However Suburbs’ middle order of Barry, Parslow and Davies steered the score through to 200 after 43 overs had gone and looked ready for a big finish but the Alpacas tightened their attack up and, at the end of the innings, Suburbs had totalled 245/7. McClenaghan led the attack with 4/50 in a fiery bowling spell. Suburbs’ total may have been disappointing from their viewpoint but probably looked a fairly tough ask to the Howick batsmen. Openers Bill Walsh and Dan Young did their job and settled in

to take the shine off the ball and, as they have so often done this season, set a platform. The first wicket fell at 39 when Walsh was run out and Andrew Morrison came to the wicket to join Young. This pair continued to consolidate the innings and when Young was dismissed for 72, the score had reached 125 and Howick was halfway there. Brian Barnard joined Morrison and batted quite circumspectly for a while before launching. At this stage the Alpacas had to score at the rate of seven runs an over but with wickets in hand achieved victory in the 46th over. Andy Morrison was 89* at the close, scored off 81 balls. He kept up with Barnard who finished on 65* off 55 balls, including four sixes. The Alpacas now lead the Hedley Howarth Two Day Championship by at least 17 points with two rounds to play and have it all to play for now if they are to win the championship two years in a row. The women did not play this week due to the Hearts playing Wellington at Colin Maiden. Skye Bowden has played in both matches but another Llama has made the Auckland squad with Josie Penfold being named 12th man.

igh hopes that the injection of coaches Leon MacDonald and Tom Coventry would lift the Blues out of Super Rugby obscurity are starting to look as bleak as the form of veteran midfielders Ma’a Nonu and Sonny Bill Williams. Having suffered their third loss in as many games with their 19-23 away defeat to the Jaguares, the Blues lacked flair and imagination against a staunch defence. In fairness, MacDonald and Coventry are proven coaches who need more time to make an impact in conjunction with former head coach Tana Umaga. Thomas sets sights on Olympics By Nick Krause

owick teenager Hannah Thomas is aiming for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The 17-year-old, who attends Howick College, was recently selected for the New Zealand canoe and kayak teams and has made Paris her goal. Thomas has just returned from the Australian Open where she finished (Kayak - Senior 66th; Junior 16th. Canoe - Senior 37th; Junior 5th) and the Oceania Championships finishing (Kayak - Senior 37th; Junior 4th; Oceania Junior champion. Canoe - Senior 25th, Junior 4th, Oceania Junior champion. Both events were held in Penrith NSW. Her step-Dad Shaun Pearce told the Times: “Both the events were incredibly well attended by European competition with more than 300 competitors which is the equivalent start line to a European World Cup event.” Thomas started paddling in the UK in 2014. She was talent spotted in her school when British Canoeing visited on a scouting day. “She was selected from more than a 1000 children in local schools close to the London 2012 venue,” said Pearce. In 2017 Hannah competed for Great Britain at the Junior Worlds & European Championships.

New Zealand rep Hannah Thomas is taking on the world.

“We then moved to New Zealand in January 2018. A rule change in the International Canoe Federation meant that Hannah was able to start competing for NZ immediately,” he said. “She competed in 1 Senior World Cup and the Junior Worlds in the Canoe class.” Getting to this level takes extreme dedication. So what drives her? “Hannah enjoys the challenge

that the white water offers and the team camaraderie,” said Pearce. “Training consists of around 11 training sessions per week (both on and off the water). This year will see her overseas for around 12 weeks so balancing being away and school is a delicate balance. Howick College is extremely supportive towards Hannah representing New Zealand.” Meanwhile, behind the scenes

the family is in the process of obtaining permanent residency in New Zealand so it can get citizenship in time to meet the IOC regulations for Paris Olympics 2024. There are a couple of other significant issues too. Hannah’s canoe was broken on the plane last month. That has hampered training and meant ordering another from Europe. “On our way home from Aus-

tralia we arrived back into Auckland to find that Hannah’s canoe had been written-off whilst in the cargo hold,” Pearce said. “We now have to order a new one (they are made in Slovakia) so there will be no chance to have it manufactured and shipped to New Zealand before we leave in early June. “We now have to figure out a solution so that she is able to train in her canoe for the season ahead.” A local boat builder is currently patching the damaged one up in order for her to be able to continue to train. “Fixing the boat will add significant weight but will have to do for training purposes in the meantime,” he said.Quite apart from the disappointment, it has also added to the massive costs involved. “We are also looking out for potential sponsors/partners to help Hannah compete in as many of the events as possible,” said Pearce.
