man who stole several vehicles and caused mayhem in “a number of serious driving incidents” was finally arrested in Howick on Monday morning. Senior Sergeant Graeme Fleming, Counties Manukau Police, said they are now appealing for witnesses. After 8.40am police received reports about a man behaving erratically in the Mt Richmond area following a reported family harm incident. A short time later, police began receiving reports about a blue Holden Commodore driving dangerously in the Otahuhu area on Great South Road. Police believe the vehicle has continued to drive dangerously through Papatoetoe and Otara. The vehicle was later involved in a crash with a motorcycle at the intersection of Te Irirangi Drive and Dawson Road, Clover Park. The motorcyclist sustained moderate injuries. Meanwhile, the driver continued down Dawson Road before colliding with another vehicle. At this point, the driver fled from the Commodore. He stole another person’s vehicle and left the area.

The driver crashed again in the Murphy’s Road area and stole another vehicle. “He continued to drive dangerously toward the Howick area before being involved in another crash at the intersection of Bleakhouse Road and Ridge Road at around 10am,” Senior Sergeant Fleming said. “The male driver attempted to steal another vehicle at this time. Police staff had been actively looking for this person. “He was located and taken into custody by police in Howick thanks to information from members of the public. “The man was driving dangerously at excessive speeds that caused serious risk to the public and it is incredibly fortunate that nobody was seriously injured.” ■ Police would like anyone who witnessed the man’s driving or were involved in any of the incidents to contact Police on 261 1321.

replacement, she’s not wasting any time finding her feet leading the school. “I want the students to continue to thrive, and the community to know that this is an amazing school, with amazing students who are doing great things,” she says. Pickering grew up in the area and even attended Howick Intermediate as a student, so she is passionate about the future of the school. “I have a real sense of belonging here, and it’s really important to me that as a school, we continue on the same path of success.” She has seen it go from strength to strength over the past two years and
has high praise for her predecessor, Yolande Franke. “I’d lived in the area and I saw how disconnected Howick Intermediate was from the local community. Then I saw what [Franke] was doing here and I really wanted to be part of that journey.” After helping turn the school around, Pickering was determined to ensure it continued to thrive even with Franke moving on. But her first few months are unlikely to be short of excitement. Having already dealt with industrial action she is juggling renovations for the school library and hall with the upcoming school

he Macleans College Exhibition and Art Sale will be held on June 15 and 16 from 9am-4pm. The Exhibition and Art Sale has been going for many years as the main fundraiser for the Macleans College Girls First XI Hockey team for the annual Jenny Hair National Secondary Tournament. This year it will be held in Palmerston North from September 2-7. The artists are local artists and this year there is a selection of returning artists and new artists. There are paintings in all different formats, and ceramics and sculptures. The exhibition and art sale provides the public an opportunity to view and purchase amazing local art as well support the community.

Cockle Bay smoke testing begins in fight against sewage overflow

moke testing has begun in Cockle Bay in a bid to reduce wastewater overflows. This comes after local residents’ cries for help to stop sewage flooding into their backyards. The sewage overflows are caused by stormwater illegally entering and overwhelming the wastewater network during periods of high rain. Now Watercare are enlisting the help of the community to identify and fix illegally connected downpipes and non-complaint gulley traps to reduce the amount of stormwater entering the wastewater network. The Nunn family are one of many families in the area whose backyards overflow with wastewater during bad weather. “We have had sanitary items, toilet paper, faeces wash into our backyard before,” says Dalyn Nunn. “Every time it rains we just watch the bottom of our backyard flood with dirty water.” Craig and Dalyn’s property on Advene Road backs onto a stream that leads straight to the beach. During extreme weather, they have had the manhole at the bottom of their property burst open and watched helplessly as sewage spills out onto the area where their children should be allowed to play. “Ultimately this wastewater ends
up in the stream, leading to our beaches,” Craig says. Craig and Dalyn say they have battled for years with Auckland Council and Watercare to have something done about the wastewater overflows. Together with their neighbour Matthew Brajkovich and a few other residents, they have been working with Watercare to implement a solution. “Watercare has acknowledged that no matter whose responsibility it is, this is a huge problem and they’ve put their hand up to help,” says Dalyn. “It’s only one part of the solution, but it’s a start and it will make a difference for us,” says Craig. While smoke testing has been used extensively throughout Auckland for some time, this is the first time Watercare has ever contacted the community prior to testing and actively encouraged residents to take some responsibility and address any faults before we get there. “We’re trying to encourage Aucklanders to take some ownership for the problem. Watercare can do its part by building new infrastructure and maintain the network but individuals can also help by making sure their pipework is compliant,” a Watercare spokesperson says. “Cockle Bay is an older area of Auckland. The area has undergone growth, with infilling. The waste-

water network works well in normal conditions but during heavy rain, huge volumes of stormwater are illegally entering and overwhelming the system, creating overflows.” The smoke testing involves Watercare using a smoke detection unit to blow non-toxic white smoke into the wastewater system to identify illegally connected downpipes and non-compliant gul-
ley traps. Those whose homes are found to have non compliant gulley traps and illegally connected downpipes will be required to fix the problem. “Details will be sent to the compliance team at Auckland Council, who will follow up with residents. Details may be recorded on LIM reports,” a Watercare spokesperson says. Watercare programme improve-
ment manager, operations says: “People don’t realise the impact something as simple as an incorrectly connected pipe can have but the reality is that just stormwater from just one roof can displace the equivalent wastewater from more than 40 households. “There are too many wetweather overflows in Cockle Bay and the sooner we put an end to this problem, the better.”

With a total of 57 teams and the courts heaving with spectators, Bo estimates around 1000 people turned up in support. The tournament raised $5000 for the education trust of Belinda-Jane’s daughter, Anika through a raffle and sausage sizzle. The finale game for the champ ladies game was a nail-biter with
an even score at half time, but team Silver Burns took out the winning cup. The winner of the Mixed Social & Mixed Ladies was Wolf Pak. The college grade winners were the Mighty Mellons, and the younger team winners were Whatever Goes (Year 7/8), Magic Mellons (Year 5/6) and Unicorns (Year 4).

en-year-old Shannon Rochester has just returned from the Pokemon Championships in Berlin and is now preparing to fly to North America. He is getting used to travelling internationally with an allexpense paid holiday for travel and accommodation. The Cockle Bay Primary School student has travelled to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Berlin all in one year and will be now heading to Columbia and Washington DC in August. The Year 6 student says that what he loves most about the tactically intricate game of cards is strategising and meeting up with new people, apart from travelling and seeing new places. Though at times “it is nervewrecking being pitted against the best players in the world from France, Italy, England, America and Oceania in Berlin”, he says it is quite thrilling to be invited to world championships. “You get funding for your trip
only if you are graded as the top four in Oceania for an Australian tournament or top eight in the country for a world tournament. “Also, you get straight into day two at the world tournament. If you win an event you get $500 on a card that you can spend on sightseeing or anything else whilst you are in the country.” Shannon, who was placed fourth at the Regional Pokemon Championship in Sydney, says that the flights and accommodation are paid directly by Pokémon. For a game of cards that was once banned by schools because of students stealing cards that are a collectable craze, Shannon says that his school has been very supportive and given him shout-outs during assembly. He says he particularly loves collecting decks of cards and Pokemon play mats at every event. “There are some cards that are worth a lot of money and I feel very fortunate that the owner of Spellbound gaming shop at

Petrol tax increase first part of ‘Well-being’ Budget Simeon Two weeks ago the Government handed down its much heralded ‘Well-being’ Budget. Despite its name, the Budget does little to actually improve the well-being of New Zealanders and of those living in Pakuranga. Yes the Budget provides much needed additional funding for mental health, but other than that there is little else to point to which improves the lives of hard-working New Zealanders. In fact, the first piece of legislation passed as part of the Budget was an increase to the petrol tax of 4c per litre for motorists, which will take effect from 1 July this year and then again on 1 July next year. These tax increase come on top of those that motorists have already faced under this
Government, with petrol tax increases imposed last year in addition to the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax. Motorists in Pakuranga are soon going to be paying 20c more per litre every time they fill their car up compared with when National came to office. This has a real impact on the everyday lives of New Zealanders as people seek to pay the bills and make ends meet. Alongside increases in petrol taxes, rents have also increased on average by $50 per week in Auckland, as has the cost of living across the board. The Budget has also failed to address problems like our slowing economy, with the recent Household Labour Force Survey showing a net loss of 4000 jobs so far this year.

ye on Nature’ is a popular educational environmental programme that the Manukau Beautification Trust hosts annually and is widely attended by the primary and secondary school students as well as the general public. Sponsored by the Auckland Southern Local Boards and the Second Nature Charitable Trust, the Manukau Beautification Trust’s ‘Eye on Nature’ Wearable Art Fashion Show has become a much anticipated dramatic platform, where students will showcase some of the most creative entries imaginable. Students are encouraged to use recyclable, repurposed and or organic materials. Entries just keep getting more impressive each year.
This year, the High School and Primary/Intermediate School 2019 Wearable Art competition is themed ‘Nurturing our Forest’ Friend or Foe. The Little Einstein group, a team of four boys and six girls from Pointview Primary School are excited to be entering two costumes, thinking outside the square using STEM subjects’ science, math and technology to come up with an artistic costume to be modelled on the cat walk. Aucklanders have made 100 million trips in the past year, making it the biggest year for public transport in the city since 1951. To mark the occasion, Auckland Transport has announced that on Sunday June 23, the public can travel free on buses, trains and most ferry services. It’s a gesture by AT to say thank you to Aucklanders and to encourage new commuters to try out public transport, says Mayor Phil Goff. The Mayor says the switch to public transport is happening faster than was estimated, with the 100 million target being achieved months ahead of time. “We haven’t seen this much use of public transport since 1951 when trams were in their prime.
“We need more and more people on public transport to ease congestion caused by the yearly growth of population by more than 40,000 in Auckland. Every person on a bus, train or ferry is one less car clogging up the roads and adding carbon emissions to our atmosphere,” he says. “Public transport has improved immeasurably. We now have more busways, double decker buses, electric trains and upgraded bus and train stations and services. Service hours have been extended and the HOP card and integrated fares have reduced costs and made public transport easier and more efficient. Public satisfaction with bus and rail exceeds 90 per cent. “There’s much more we need to do and those changes are
coming. We are extending the Northern Busway, construction of the Eastern Busway has started and the Puhinui Bus-Rail Interchange and rapid transit to the Airport and precinct gets under way in October. Transport Minister Phil Twyford says more people using public transport frees up the roads for those who have to drive. “Everyday 270,000 trips are taken on public transport in Auckland which reduces congestion and carbon emissions. “Our Government is investing nearly $2.2 billion on public transport in Auckland over this three year period and the growing trip numbers are evidence that if you invest in more and better public transport, people will use it.”

Nose surgery: Rhinoplasty for better breathing and appearance Noses have three significant functions, the first being to warm and humidify air before it enters the trachea and lungs to prevent these structures becoming too dry. The second is filtration of the air to remove principally dust and other particles being achieved by a combination of filtering hairs and sticky mucous to which trapped particles then adhere. We get rid of all this trapped ‘stuff” when we blow the nose. The third is to provide an often over-looked appearance centrepiece to the middle of the face. Interestingly, the appearance of a nose can subliminally make us assess the character of a person,
whether rightly or wrongly. For example an over projected, excessively large or hooked nose can sometimes give the impression to the observer that the person with the big nose is over-bearing, assertive or aggressive, when that is usually not the case. This can lead to a misinterpretation of facial body language. A bent nose is often associated with a fighter/ pugilist or a tough rugby player if male. Of course, many bent noses are due to accidents, often in early childhood when young children fall over and bang their noses, sometimes causing a break in the bones and a bent internal septum
that usually leads to breathing difficulties later in life. So, a deformed external appearance of the nose due to injury can lead to or be associated with internal functional breathing difficulties. Surgery is able to correct a bent septum and thus improve breathing and at the same time the nose can be straightened to improve its appearance. Many people, when having a bent nose corrected opt to have the size of their nose reduced at the same time if it is bigger than they desire. Functional and appearance surgery can be combined in the one procedure if indicated.

It can be performed with small incisions that are well hidden, often inside the nostrils. Rhinoplasy is not recommended until the patient is at least 16 years old, to allow for full growth of the cartilage and bone of the nose. Martin Rees has a contract with ACC to correct damaged noses and most medical insurance companies will cover corrections of functional breathing problems within the nose. Insurance companies do not cover purely cosmetic reduction of large noses.

Newest Leo Club in the world in Howick There was a lot of good cheer as the newest Leo Club in the world was inducted at Howick College in the presence of the members of the Lions Club of Howick, Dr. Paul Bennett associate principal Howick College and Neera Sundrum dean of Ingham House. The formal presentation of the Certificate of organisation and Induction of the members and officers was conducted at Howick College on Friday June 7. The presentation was made by Lions district governor Wendy Miller. The program commenced with
a karakia and a rousing kapa haka performance. It is through Leos that young people are given the chance to enhance and make a difference in their communities. It is through the activities and projects they undertake that they get an opportunity to develop and practice their leadership, organization and social skills. At a time when a disconnected world is driven by devices, the Leo Club instils in young people the ability to reach out and get involved in a lifetime of community service.

It’s Howick’s Little Shop of Horrors I
t was a smash hit on Broadway, a cult movie in the 80s and now it’s coming to the stage at Howick College - it’s the dark, dangerous and delightfully zany, sci-fi/ rock musical Little Shop of Horrors. Based on the book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, this tuneful and hilarious production also has a serious message, warning the audience of the perils faced when we feed our desires for fame and fortune at the cost of our basic humanity. It’s a lesson the meek and mild hero Seymour Kelborn learns all too well when he discovers a magnificent, but diabolical, talking venus fly-trap in the florist shop where he works. Year 12 Student Tevita Sila, who plays Seymour, says it has been exciting and rewarding to see how all the components have come together to create a really

facility,” says Dorothy Bigwood, principal of Cockle Bay School. “It was opened by the Board Chair, James Yates, and very soon after was used for six production performances over two days. here is a buzz of excitement at the Howick Dance Studio, as a large group of ballerinas lace up their pointe shoes and change into costume. Another group of little ones in their tutus makes a quick exit with their parents waiting to drive them home. The rehearsals for The Nutcracker, a classical ballet production, have been timed with clockwork precision as the cast of 100 for the upcoming production has been broken up into smaller groups To be hosted on June 29 and 30 at the Hawkins Theatre at 13 Ray Small Drive Papakura, Sharon Barber, Howick Dance
Studio principal says that it is a six-month start-to-finish production, choreographed at Christmas time. The Nutcracker is a two-act classical ballet based on Hoffmann’s 1816 fairy tale that tells the story of a little girl who goes to the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. “We have a very dedicated team of volunteers and have ex-students who never leave me. They never go away, I tell them that you are here for at least 20 years,” says Sharon who was trained at the Auckland Ballet Academy and in London at the Royal Academy of Dance headquarters. She established the Howick Dance Studio in 1992. “There is a lot of bonding and

friendships by the time we finish with the production. Also, ours is the only studio that uses live music.” However, she admits that all her productions in the past have had a cast of 200. “Sadly, now-a-days education comes first, and then arts. And I am very particular about the fact that the children have to come for rehearsals every

Council launches 2019 elections website T
he 2019 Auckland local elections website is now live. Voteauckland.co.nz is a “one stop” destination for candidates and voters, council said. It has information about how to vote, why people should vote, and how Auckland Council works. Resources are available in New Zealand Sign Language and will soon be offered in Samoan, Simplified Chinese and te reo Maori. Auckland Council general manager Democracy Services Marguerite Delbet says the website aims to “facilitate participation in local democracy by removing as many barriers as possible”. “We live in one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world, so we need to make sure all Aucklanders have the information they need to get involved and make informed decisions.” Candidates can access a range of resources, including information about how nominations work, how to campaign, and the roles, responsibilities and remuneration of elected members. Nominees must be New Zealand citizens aged 18 years or
older and enrolled on the New Zealand electoral roll. Nomination forms will be available on the website when the nomination period opens on July 19 until August 16. Delbet says one of the main reasons people don’t vote is because they don’t know enough about the candidates. Formosa Golf Resort has been banned from discharging waste from its facilities following allegations it has been pumping thousands of litres of raw sewage towards a stream that flows into the sea. Last week hidden camera footage supplied to 1 NEWS was released showing somebody at Formosa putting a pump into the wastewater tanks on site, and leaving it to drain for several hours. A member of the public told 1 NEWS this has been going on for years. Last Friday Formosa was served with an Insanitary Building Notice by Auckland Council, giving the owner 30 days to get their act together. In the meantime, Formosa is effectively unable to operate. Furthermore, back in January this year Auckland Council issued Formosa with an abatement notice to Formosa addressing its concerns over contaminants from waste water discharge. However an ongoing investigation has found that the business failed to make any changes. Auckland Council inspected the resort last week and found its water treatment facility was not working. “We are not satisfied that the business has complied with the abatement notices we issued them earlier this year in respect to the discharging of sewage,” says Kerri Fergusson, Auckland Council’s Team Manager of Compliance Investigations.

“The notices have been issued in relation to the club house, the sports complex, the laundry and all of the villas. “The resort is now unable to discharge any waste from their facilities including toilets, the restaurant and the laundry.” The notice advises the business owners to “seek assistance from engineers and other suitable contractors to assist them with fixing the problems to council’s satisfaction”. A spokesperson for Formosa, Graham Chin, told Radio New Zealand in a statement that they hoped to start fixing the problems this week. “There will be a temporary disruption to business whilst the issues are resolved once and for all,” he said. The Times contacted Formosa Golf Resort for comment but they didn’t respond by the time we went to print.

Ross weighs in on Government’s mental health response The Labour government recently announced they will accept 38 out of 40 recommendations stemming from its Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross says he’s encouraged by this but is concerned the government has chosen not to adopt a suicide reduction target as part of that response. “It’s a big call for the Government to reject one of the most important recommendations made by the inquiry report – to set a target of a 20 per cent reduction in suicide rates by 2030,” Ross says. “A number of recommendations were made in the report that have the goal of reducing suicide, such as for the Government to complete the national suicide prevention strategy and implementation plan, and ensure the strategy is supported by ‘significantly increased resources for suicide prevention and post-vention. “The experts who led the inquiry argued a suicide-prevention office should be established to provide stronger and sustained leadership on action to prevent suicide. “This shows just how important it is to set a suicide reduction target as part of any plan to improve mental health in New Zealand,” Ross says. “How can we know how we are tracking on improving mental health without setting a specific goal to reduce suicides?” Ross says expanding primary

mental health services is also vital and it’s good to see the Government heading in that direction. “The last time there was a significant announcement on new spending for mental health it was $100 million of election year sweeteners that were unlikely to be implemented. “Significant investment is needed urgently to increase access to publicly-funded mental health and addiction services for people with mild to moderate needs. “People who are struggling need access to effective and efficient help. We must make it easier to access services, support and expand service providers in the sector, and constantly remind people that it isn’t weak to ask for help. “Every suicide is an absolute tragedy and it should be a key priority for the Government and Parliament to ensure we are doing all we can to improve our mental health sector and save people’s lives. However Ross says the announcement of the Government’s plans is a good start.

Thanks to Good Samaritan I want to commend a woman who raced to the rescue. Last Thursday I was on Pigeon Mountain with my six-year-old granddaughter. She had raced me to the top and was racing me back down. She got way ahead of me.

Busy summer for builders
The volume of building activity rose a seasonally adjusted 6.2 per cent in the March 2019 quarter, from the December 2018 quarter, the strongest growth in three years, Stats NZ said. “Growth in building activity this quarter was driven by non-residential construction, including work on social and cultural buildings, offices, and universities,” construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said. The volume of non-residential building activity rose 9 per cent in the March 2019 quarter compared with the December 2018 quarter, while residential construction volumes rose 4.3 per cent. “The volume of building work has been generally increasing since 2012, boosted originally by the Canterbury earthquake rebuild, and more recently by developments in Auckland,” McKenzie said. The magnificent Mo’unga I
n setting up five of the Crusaders’ 10 tries in their 66-0 thrashing of the Rebels, Richie Mo’unga again demonstrated he’s one of the three classiest first-fives in world rugby. Another, of course, is twice International Rugby Player of the Year Beauden Barrett who lost his mantle last year to Irish flyhalf Jonathan Sexton. But while Sexton is a great kicker possessed of Grant Foxlike accuracy, his running game does not rate alongside that of New Zealand’s Barrett and Mo’unga. In scoring four fabulous tries in one test against Australia last year, the speedy Barrett showed what an attacking threat he is when given room to move. He’s also become an outstanding cover defender. However under the intense pressure of a cluttered rush defence, Mo’unga’s slick pass and deception offers more space for his outside backs to attack whereas Barrett’s floated pass risks intercept chances for his opponents. Mo’unga’s accurate cross-kick against the Rebels reaped tries for wings Sevu Reece and Braydon Ennor although the latter also beat three tacklers en route. It was also Mo’unga’s sweet pass that set up the gifted Reece’s chip and chase second try - and it was the first-five’s mid-field chip that David Havili scored his from. Finally, it was the first-five’s draw and pass which won Ennor his third try when he could have taken
the gap and scored himself. In addition, Mo’unga succeeded with seven of nine conversion attempts before Ryan Crotty celebrated his 150th match for the Crusaders by converting his own try to complete a stunning performance. With Daniel Carter recognised as the All Blacks greatest first-five upon his international retirement after winning the 2015 World Cup, Barrett and now Mo’unga have done justice to his legacy. Unfortunately, much like outstanding flanker Ardie Savea, Mo’unga’s game time in tests is limited to when he comes off the bench. While the All Blacks are renowned for their depth and blazing finish, how much more effective would their attack be by combining Mo’unga and Barrett at first and second-five-eighths from the start? With Mo’unga’s uncanny ability to put players through gaps, Barrett’s acceleration would pose more problems for defences than it already does. That would mean sacrificing second-five muscle for speed and guile at a time when there is debate as to who should be the midfield combination. It won’t happen this year with so many experienced midfield candidates but it could in the near future when Ryan Crotty, Sonny Bill Williams and Ma’a Nonu end their test aspirations.

Diamonds are baseball gems The Under 11 HowickPakuranga Diamonds is New Zealand first all-girls club baseball team. The girls have varying skills and abilities. Some have played the sport for up to four seasons and some have just picked up the sport for the very first time this year. In the team’s inaugural season and the girls have done really well, winning a majority of their games throughout the season and placing fourth in a tournament against teams that are dominated by boys. BBTC in running for club of year Bucklands Beach Tennis Club has picked up a number of trophies at the Auckland Tennis awards. On May 30 the club picked up the following Trophies: ■ Junior Interclub club of the year (this was won last year as well). ■ Senior Interclub club of the year ■ Auckland Tennis club of the year. ■ Tennis Auckland will put BBTC forward for the NZ club of the year. On top of that Jack Chapman
won the Auckland Junior boy of the year. He is also NZ under 12 champion and has been selected to represent NZ in an upcoming tournament in Australia. Earlier in the year he represented NZ in tournaments in Australia and Malaysia. Julia Sim (club coach) received a 20-year gold service medal. “These are huge achievement’s for any club, but to win them all in one season is a great honour,” said Buckland Beach Tennis Club’s Brett Clarke.
Ponsonby just too strong Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s Premiers struggled to control a rampant Ponsonby, going down 44-10. PURC director of rugby Pita Alatini said it was a very

Gabby was a little nervous when she arrived at the Howick and Pakuranga Netball Courts bright and early and a little bit coy about the attention she was receiving at first. But she was well-supported by her mum and dad Vanessa and Clinton, and younger sister Felicity who said they were extremely proud of her. Family, friends and members of other local clubs were also on the sideline to show their support and opportunity to score a try just before halftime which would have got our confidence up and then battle in the second half. “However it was not to be and now we look ahead to a crucial game against College Rifles who also got beaten (by Marist). It will be a battle of desperation as both

Gabby was able to manoeuvre around the court and negotiate the tight angles by using a special Melrose sports wheelchair. Funding for this was provided to Gabby and her family by both the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation and the Wilson Home Trusts. “Gabby wouldn’t be able to do this without their help,” says her mum. She also uses the wheelchair to play her other sporting passion, tennis, and her goal is to compete in the next Special Olympics in 2024. The Howick Netball Club, of which Gabby is a member, think she’s probably the first New Zealand wheelchair umpire, perhaps even worldwide.
