anic is mounting among the parents of east Auckland school children as 16 schools will be losing some of their school buses next year. As part of Auckland Transport’s (AT) new bus network, selected schools will have their regular school bus services withdrawn, and alternate public transport routes have been suggested. Botany mum, Angelika Sansom says she is horrified that her 9 year old children will now have to cross a secluded reserve and busy roads
to get to and from Botany Downs Primary. “I don’t feel comfortable with my kids catching public transport alone where nobody is looking out for them and they don’t know anyone.” “On top of that the bus doesn’t go anywhere remotely close to the school.” The bus route suggested for her children by AT will drop her kids outside Millhouse Reserve which leaves Sansom with concerns for their safety crossing the reserve, which is out of sight of the road. She says even if she dropped her children at the school gates in the

morning, they would still need to catch the bus home. The alternate bus stop recommended for their drive home Sansom says would drop the kids outside the Accident and Emergency Clinic on Botany Road, forcing her kids to cross busy Botany Road, alone. “They have told me by themselves that they don’t feel comfortable crossing Botany Road. Even I feel nervous crossing that road, and I do it at the traffic lights. I just won’t allow them to do that.” Sansom says despite statistics AT is using to justify withdraw-
ing school bus services, there are bus loads of student who will be affected by these changes. “The bus my children catch services about six schools in the area. They are giving me statistics, which I know are incorrect, on there being too few Botany Downs Primary students using the bus,” she says. “But whoever put this bus service together in the first place had the foresight to see that if each school has a few students that need to catch it, add them together and you have a full bus.” ➤ Turn to Page 5

n three minutes flat there were 282 registrations for a role in Peter Pan, National Youth Theatre Company’s (NYTC) latest production primed for a world premier on December 8. Currently there is a waiting list of 125 students. From the 282 students who auditioned for a role in the musical by Jonathan Alver and James Doy’s Peter Pan, Saint Kentigern College’s Scarlett Jacques won the lead role. “There were 30 of us who auditioned for the lead role of Peter Pan and it’s lovely because we get energy off each other. We also learn a whole lot of life skills since a lot of them auditioning for the role are my friends who have been in theatre for a long time,” says Scarlett. For the 15-year-old who believes that nothing else makes her feel so happy than being on stage, this is her 11th stage production. “I have done around eight to nine productions with NYTC and three other professional shows including the The Wizard of Oz, Annie the Musical and Billy Elliot,” she says. Juggling between school work and theatre, she says she is constantly preparing for the production with dance, jazz, lyrical training and lots of workshops. But it is flying that she really looks forward to. Training at the Dust Place, the Circus Theatre company where cast members learn how to fly in a harness, is what she most excited about. “Peter Pan can fly,” says the young professional actor. Ward is equally pleased to play Tinker Bell. The 10-year-old, who will be making her debut on stage, says that the reason why she loves per-
forming is because “you can be anyone you want!” Dressed in her costume for the Times photo shoot, she exudes confi-
dence as says she will be playing the role of Tinker Bell and Jane in the mega production which will have all the 282 actors on stage in a couple of scenes. Marketing manager Shirley Sequeira who also looks after scholarships and school bookings for NYTC, a charity devoted to bringing confidence to young people through the theatrical arts, says that they have a triple cast for the seven shows at the ASB Theatre. “We will be having four school shows with a total of 5000 students attending so far,” she says. “The idea behind a triple cast is that there is no one big star of the show. NYTC is about offering all young people from the age of seven to 21 an opportunity to participate in ongoing performing arts. ” Through NYTC’s OnStage programme, up to 220 students at a time participate in two full-scale musical productions every year. More than anything else the children look forward to the two night theatre camp, says Shirley All young people are offered the opportunity to participate in ongoing performing arts training through workshops, courses and holiday programmes. “We also have a scholarship programme where we partner with low decile schools. Currently we have 21 students on scholarship,” says Shirley who is passionate about theatre. A firefighter’s father was murdered in South Africa prompting friends to launch a givealittle page By Farida Master

embile Mvimbi, a Clevedon Volunteer Firefighter was devastated on receiving the shocking news during a brigade practice evening that his father had been shot in an armed robbery in South Africa. Wanting to help Tembile’s young family in need of assistance during a very tough time, fellow volunteer firefighter Ben Herlihy set up a Givealittle page saying: “Our fellow Clevedon Volunteer Firefighter, Tembile Mvimbi, who is a local sharemilker and young father received the awful news that his father was shot and murdered during an armed robbery in South Africa. “We are appealing to the Clevedon community, the Fire and Emergency NZ Family and Dairy Farming community on his behalf for contributions to help pay for his flight home for his father’s funeral and to aid his young family during this stressful time.” “Funds that are raised will be used to pay for Tem’s flight to South Africa and help his young family cope with living costs whilst he is away.” The amount raised from 38 donations was $2215, a big help

for Tembeli to fly to Johannesburg and drive 10 miles further into the interiors of the village, but Ben says “Tembeli is a super genuine guy who needs more help”. “It’s a huge financial strain as he lives on the farm with a young family and leases it.” Apart from the trauma of discovering that his father was attacked the minute he got off the bus to collect his pension, Ben says that the costs of flights and burial amounted to well over $5000. “He just returned on Tues-
day from South Africa and visited the fire station to say how grateful he is to the Clevedon community for the financial help provided. “However, further donations would be welcome,” says Ben about his fellow worker who has been a Volunteer fire fighter for seven years. He hopes the donations go up to $3500. The Clevedon Volunteer Fire Brigade donated $500 from their member’s welfare fund. Clevedon Chief Fire Officer, Mike Kelly added, “Tem moved
to Clevedon earlier in the year and one of the first things he did was to approach the fire brigade to offer his service as he was previously a member of the Ngatea Fire Brigade. “He quickly proved to be a valuable member of our team. It’s only right that we as a community can step up when someone who volunteers their time to assist the community the way firefighters do is in need from such tragic circumstances.” The Clevedon Fire Station that is run by around 16 volunteers who work mainly in the evening, middle of the night, on weekends and as and when they are available, Ben says “they are good bunch of people who want to give back to the community.” A high percentage of the work they do involves motor vehicle accidents, but call outs are varied and can also include property and scrub fires, clearing roads during storms and occasionally even pulling horses out of a drain or providing education for local kindergartens. Howick celebrates its 170th birthday this Sunday with a lunch at the Howick Club. One of the ideas behind the lunch, which will also be attended by former Howick mayor Morrin Cooper, is to get sufficient interested parties to form a steering group think tank leading up to the 175th anniversary celebrations. Grants for two groups Two local groups were awarded grants by the New Zealand Community Trust in October. Howick Gymnastic Club was granted $3500 to go towards gym equipment while Howick Softball Club (Fencibles) receives $8000 which will go towards salary of a game development manager. Among the many gaming venues that contributed to the grants last month was the Barrel Inn, Howick.

he famous Lions Christmas Cake fundraiser is on again. Bucklands Beach Lions have taken possession of more than 200 Christmas cakes which will be sold in the coming weeks. Roger Robinson, membership chairman for Bucklands Beach Lions, says the cake sales have run for more than 45 years. “These cakes are still made to the much-loved original recipe and not sold anywhere else,” he said. And that original recipe – the cakes are made with more than 50 per cent fruit - was developed by Ernest Adams especially for the Lions fundraiser. The packaging has been freshened up, but nothing else has changed. Millions of dollars have been raised over the years—and it has all gone back to the clubs and the community projects they support.

local lads who had set off from Howick Beach on a fishing trip,” he says. “The community raised money for the first rescue vessel with assistance from the-then Howick Borough Council.” He says that today the Howick Volunteer Coastguard, previously named Howick Sea Rescue, has a state of the art rescue vessel that is launched by tractor on Howick Beach. There are currently more than 50 members covering operational boat crews and support crews who respond to problems from a flat battery to serious medical call outs. Martin says the open day is a way to celebrate the success of the community in establishing the first rescue vessel, invite them to learn more about what the coastguard do and acknowledge the work that the coastguard do.
The winner for the ANZ and Auckland Council ‘Design a Rashie’ competition is 7-year-old Olivia from Macleans Primary School. Olivia took out the top spot for Pakuranga with her detailed and colourful designed rash shirt. As the winner, Olivia will be one of the first to try out the splash pad at the Lloyd Elsmore Park Pool and Leisure Centre with her classmates, wearing Olivia’s personally designed rash shirt.

AT Spokesperson, James Ireland says all bus services will be safe for children to take and are all required to have CCTV cameras. “We also provide a Travelwise programme to every school that wants to take part. We can organise walking school buses and provide the schools with the information and support they need to ensure their students get to school safely.” He says all 16 schools in east Auckland that will have changes will have an alternative route that is suitable for children. “We have to provide an overall connected network
that serves the area as best as possible, and this means we cannot design each route to fit every individual’s journey, but what we are doing is providing a far better service across the city,” he says. He says the rumour that all school bus service for east Auckland are being removed is completely untrue. “The main reason for the changes is to ensure that school buses compliment the public bus network rather than duplicate it, as currently happens too often. “Right now our bus routes look like spaghetti thrown against a map. Once the New Network rolls out it will be simpler, easier to understand and much more frequent.”

60 years of the Howick Volunteer Coastguard The Howick Volunteer Coastguard is celebrating six decades of service. On Saturday, the parking lot of the Howick Beach reserve will be abuzz with excitement as the community gathers to take part in the Howick Volunteer Coastguards public open day. Food trucks, flare demonstrations, fun activities for children, and music are on the programme from 10pm to 2pm. Guests will also be given the opportunity to ride on the Howick Rescue One Vessel. Coastguard spokesman Alan Martin says it’s thanks to the Howick community that the first rescue vessel was launched and has kept the community safe in local waters for the past 60 years. “Howick Volunteer Coastguard was formed in 1956 after the tragic drowning of three

It is the role of the opposition to test the government’s policies and make sure they are prepared for Parliament. Last week we challenged Labour on whether they had organised themselves enough to elect their chosen speaker and we had our first few question times of the year Being in opposition is not all always about opposing things. While we will certainly oppose new laws that we think will undermine the hard work New Zealander’s have put in, we will also support things that we believe will build on the successes of hard working New Zealanders. That is why Bill English has promised National’s support for any new TPP legislation and for extending paid parental leave.

Jet skier rescued off Eastern Beach Police were alerted to a person who had come off a jet ski and was in the water. This was shortly before 5pm on Saturday. The Eagle helicopter was deployed to locate the person and a Coastguard boat was also deployed. The person was picked up by Coastguard and, together with the jet ski, taken back to the Coastguard where they were assessed by ambulance staff as a precaution.

Neck problems – Do you have it?
T
oday’s mod modern living often entails hours of driving and hunching over workstations, which can play havoc with our necks. So it is not surprising that neck pain is the second most common condition that chiropractors work with. Whilst neck pain is less common than low back pain, millions of people experience neck pain and related arm pain at some stage in their lives and therefore seek chiropractic care. It results from abnormalities in the soft tissues – muscles, ligaments, and nerves, as well as in the bone and the joints of the spine. The most common causes that chiropractors identify and treat are soft tissue abnormalities from injury or prolonged wear and tear and in many people it is also the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders and arms. When neck pain is caused by muscle strain, you may have aches and stiffness that spread to the upper arm and forearm. Shooting pain that spreads down the arm into the hand and fingers can be a symptom of a “pinched nerve” or nerve entrapment in the neck. When a nerve is “pinched” in
the neck, numbness, weakness and possibly pain of the hands or arms may occur. Other common reasons people will consult with a chiropractor include whiplash, RSI (repetitive strain injuries) or overuse, degeneration and wear and tear, and postural problems, also headaches and migraines.
How does the body work? In your house, you have a circuit breaker box. In that box you have individual circuits that control specific rooms in your house. If you were to blow the circuit that leads to the kitchen, nothing in your kitchen would work. Without a proper supply of electricity, nothing in your kitchen would work. The only solution is to go to the circuit breaker box and physically turn the power on by turning the circuit on. In your body, you have a circuit breaker box known as your spinal cord. It has a series of 24 circuits known as vertebrae (spinal bones). Each vertebra sends a wire called a nerve with information and nerve impulses to all parts of your body including all of your muscles, organs and glands.
Much like a circuit breaker box after a thunder storm, if your body suffers a physical stress – like a car accident, fall or even poor posture, that stress can cause one of these circuits to blow. Headaches, migraine headaches and neck and shoulder pain are all BLARING ALARMS telling you that you have blown a circuit. Chiropractic helps the body to help itself!

rban fantasy, history, watching animated films and things they dream about, are some of the triggers that inspire students of Howick College to flex their creative muscle. Asking students to write ‘what if’ statements /scenarios that might further be developed into a novel, Melbourne-based author of two books Sriram Iyer recently conducted an interactive workshop that covered story starters, planning a novel, writing a novel, getting published and marketing a novel. The Creative Writing group at Howick College led by Year 13 students Rupinderpal Singh and Ciara Beintken and supported by teacher Geraldine Jamieson are a group of skilled writers. Group member Sophie Fooks has had her short story ‘A Grain of Darkness’ recently accepted for the New Zealand Young Writers anthology (releasing in Nov) titled Alter Egos, I’m not like the others.

Walking into Book Ends at Howick Little Theatre, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Director Susanne Dell had promised me a classic and relatable Kiwi comedy but part of me wondered just how funny watching six men in a coffee shop could really be. The answer, in case you were wondering, is very. The Cabin Fever Club is a collection of Gold Card-holding literary types who meet every Tuesday morning in the same place. Set over a period of four years, the group laments the everincreasing reach of technology in everyday life and its impact on literature as they know it. With just one location – outside the Sourdough cafe in Devonport – it would be easy to risk the audience becoming bored but the range and depth of characters ensured the audience remained enraptured. Each character brought something special to the play with their various struggles and humour. From Martin (Hamish Stevens), the freelance writer upset about Radio New Zealand no longer accepting stories for its Storytime segment, to Peter (Jason Catterall), the struggling actor who becomes desperate for work after his much-loved character is killed off Shortland Street. Also part of the Cabin Fever Club are Bert, the former famous poet (Mark Campbell), Phil the playwright (Frank Woodside) , Jeff the novelist (John Moloney) and Paul Ashton the former editor (John Blair), who each come to learn and accept how the realms of art and media are changing with the advancement of technology. Last but not least is Bron, the cafe manager played by Annie Roach, whose brief appearances fitted in nicely with the otherwise all-male cast and added an always-welcome extra dimension to the play While I spent the entire show with a smile on my face, my personal highlight would be the lengths Bert goes to in order to receive female attention, leading to roars of laughter from the audience. Book Ends is relatable, hilarious and, above all, a classic Kiwi comedy. I highly recommend heading down to see it yourself. ■■ Book Ends is on at Howick Little Theatre until December 2. oodman Property Trust (GMT), the NZX-listed industrial and office property owner, has continued to take advantage of the positive business environment and has delivered a half-year result consistent with earlier guidance. Goodman (NZ), the manager of GMT, today announced profit after tax of $39.5 million in its interim result for the six months ended September 30 compared to $67.6m previously. The group, which owns Highbrook Business Park, said the main variance is driven by the recognition of $8.4m of fair value losses on certain investment properties in this period, compared to gains of $19.8m last year. It announced operating earnings after tax of $51.4m compared to $51m in the previous corresponding period.. Financial and operational
highlights include: ■■ Operating earnings after tax of $51.4m or 4 cents per unit on a weighted average unit basis, compared to $51m in the previous corresponding period. ■■ Cash distributions of 3.325 cents per unit, relating to the first six months, representing around 94 per cent of cash earnings. ■■ Profit after tax of $39.5m compared to $67.6m previously. The main variance is driven by the recognition of $8.4m of fair value losses on certain investment properties in this period, compared to gains of $19.8m last year. ■■ Strong leasing with over 70,000 sqm of space secured on new or extended terms. Portfolio occupancy of 97 per cent and an average lease term of 5.8 years. ■■ The commencement of six new development projects with a total project cost of

Reserves are awful
Re reserves. I have taken visitors to see our lovely coastal beaches and walkways, and I am ashamed, ashamed because the berms, reserves and walkways are knee-high with grass and weeds. Ashamed because we picked up bottles, cans and endless packets and wrappers lying amongst the growth in just one reserve alone! Ashamed because there was three large deposits of dog faeces lying there – and even after leaving the reserve in question we walked past overflowing rubbish bins on the beach – not emptied – with garbage including food blowing around the roadway and beach. I walk the area regularly and the state of our reserves and walkways is appalling. Where are the contractors who are supposed to keep them mowed, cleaned or emptied? Sack them – rain is not an excuse!

Resident’s warning: beware of art scam A
Howick resident is warning others to be on the lookout after she encountered an art scammer knocking on doors in the area. Recently a woman, who asked not to be named, opened her front door to an art salesperson who was selling what was claimed to be one-of-a-kind artworks. However she said the work wasn’t one-of-a-kind, but exactly the same as that which someone had tried to sell to her years before. She first saw the painting in 2013 when she read a Times article about art scammers who conned people into buying low quality artwork for more than $100. “Tonight in Baird Street I had
them come by again with the exact same artwork,” she says. She confronted the women about how the painting couldn’t be an original as someone had tried to sell her the same art work before, but says the seller wouldn’t back down. “She was so confident that she was doing nothing wrong selling the art for $140 and still claimed these pictures were originals,” she says. “It worries me that other people will be tricked into this.” Howick police became aware of the scams when at least two people were conned into buying art prints that were being mass produced in Asia in 2013.

Similar scams have been running in countries including New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Canada, China and Ireland since 2000. If caught, it’s possible those responsible could be charged by police with obtaining by deception. People worried they have been scammed by door-to-door art sellers can report it via the Ministry of Consumer Affairs website at www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/ scams. We are fortunate in New Zealand to be one of the few countries in the world to have an effective Dispute Tribunal, which is basically a small claims court. Set up some years ago by Government to provide a way to resolve disputes without the necessity to use a lawyer and the exorbitant legal costs which might then follow. The tribunal can hear most complaints where there is a dispute totalling in value up to $15,000 or $20.000 if both parties agree. What sort of disputes/ complaints does it cover? For example, disputes with your neighbour, if work has been done improperly by a tradesperson; incorrect goods have been supplied, disagreements about fees/ costs charged. If you have online access please search the CAB website on which you will find a more detailed overview of the types of claims the Tribunal can handle. Some claims which do not fall within their jurisdiction are care
of children wills, and ownership of land. Using the Tribunal is a much cheaper option and far less formal than going to court; and you can attend with a support person if necessary, but they cannot speak on your behalf, the same conditions also apply to the other party in the dispute. Both sides present their arguments to the referee with the support of witnesses who have to wait outside until called upon. The referee will give guidance and ask appropriate questions, and then when satisfied with arguments presented, a ruling will be made which is binding on both parties. In a perfect world that would be the end of it, both parties would honour the ruling of the referee. But at times that does not happen and then if either party considers they have been unfairly treated there are avenues to continue appealing the decision made, up to the Supreme Court at the most extreme. This is only a very brief overview and although it may seem a bit daunting, basically it is a fairly streamlined process. The number of auctions around the country dropped by 19.9 per cent last month compared to October 2016 which Harcourts CEO Chris Kennedy said is down to a common belief in both buyers and sellers that auctions were an effective sales method only in a booming market. “In fact, an auction’s greatest strength is that it will give you an accurate reflection of exactly where the market is and what your property is worth,” said

This month in our latest CPII survey in association with IPSOS, we asked investors about the Special Housing Areas (SHAs) that were established in 2013. The aim of SHAs is to fast-track the development of additional Auckland housing, with a special focus on affordable housing that can be bought by people who earn the average Auckland wage. Auckland Council data shows 3,157 homes were completed in SHAs by the end of June this year, including 580 ‘affordable homes’. We asked the property investors that we surveyed whether they were aware of SHAs. More than two-thirds of investors were aware of SHAs, while 32 per cent were either unaware or not sure. We also asked investors
whether they had noticed any changes to the Auckland housing market in response to this addition of extra housing stock. Nearly half of investors noticed no change, while 19 per cent noticed slower increases in rents, and 15 per cent noticed smaller increases in house prices. We asked the investors in the sample what factors they believe contributed most to recent increases in Auckland house prices. The large majority of investors in the sample (78 per cent) consider ‘more people in Auckland’ to have contributed to the increase in house prices, while ‘not enough housing stock’ and ‘low borrowing costs’ were also considered to be contributing factors to this increase (56 per cent and 41 per cent, respectively). We asked the investors in the sample which political party they believed had the best policies to improve housing affordability in Auckland. Around a third of investors in the sample believe that National had the best policies to improve housing affordability; in comparison, 23 per cent preferred Labour’s policies on housing affordability. Notably 20 per cent of investors were undecided, while 17 per cent

This reflects a continued increase in the proportion of investors planning to divest and declining interest in investors to increase the size of their property portfolios.The Auckland Rental Property Performance Index has increased, due to an increase in the proportion of investors who are expecting ‘better’ returns on their investments over the next year, coupled with a slight decrease in the proportion of those who feel their investments will perform ‘the same’.

Average rents across south Auckland remain well below the average for the greater Auckland region (Pukekohe to Rodney). Over the past 12 months, South Auckland 3-bedroom rentals had an average weekly rental price of $503, 17 per cent lower than for the average greater Auckland 3-bedroom rental of $609. 2-bedroom rentals in South Auckland were 13 per cent lower, with an average rental price of $416, compared to $477 for greater Auckland. Looking at the individual suburbs, rental prices for 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom properties grew between 3 per cent and 6 per cent over the past year.

Cathie, who had never thought of updating her kitchen until a flood forced her hand, says she can’t believe she hadn’t considered it sooner. “My directions to our kitchen designer Hannah were that I love my island, I hate my pantry because my husband and I are short and can’t reach the back,” she says. “It had to be white. I was over blue and I didn’t want to have the same problem in six years when grey is out of fashion. So I said I wanted all white and I can add pops of colour by changing my splash back. “I had given her absolutely no guidance because I thought my kitchen was already so functional.”

Cathie says Hannah put lots of thought into the layout and focussed on maximising existing space. The previously impractical pantry was replaced with a pull out 400mm dispenser pantry and the corner cupboard which previously housed often unused baking equipment was replaced with a Mondo revolving cabinet. “We were trying to achieve a more modern look and also make better use of the available space,” says Jag kitchen’s Hannah Brown. “We didn’t change the layout much but we changed the entire look, maximising drawer space

so that it was more functional, easier to use and more aesthetically pleasing. “They do have two young girls, so the durability and the resistance of the kitchen were quite important,” she says. “The cabinetry material is in our Jag acrylic gloss and the bench top was in a 30mm engineered stone. “The glossy finish is very good in terms of aesthetics but also
easy to maintain and clean by wiping it down, but also easy to maintain in terms of buffing and polishing years down the track. “The acrylic material we use is very hard wearing and very resistant to water.” Cathie says not only does her kitchen look “fantastic” but she now has a place for everything and more space to work. “Hannah came with the idea of

edian house prices in Auckland have fallen 3.2 per cent year-on-year – the biggest fall since December 2010, according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). Prices rose in 14 of New Zealand’s 16 regions for the year to October, leading to the median house price for New Zealand, excluding Auckland, to reach a record price of $440,000 (an 8.5 per cent increase),. Contributing to the increase were record prices in four regions: • Waikato – up 9.9 per cent to $500,000 • Manawatu/Wanganui – up 11.5 per cent to $290,000 • Canterbury – up 4.7 per cent to $450,000 • Otago – up 14.4 per cent to $412,000. Nationally, the median price rose by 3.9 per cent year on year to $530,000. However, median prices in Auckland fell by 3.2 per cent year on year to $850,000 – the biggest fall since December 2010. The only other region across the country to experience a fall in the median price year-on-year, was Nelson, which saw a decrease of 6.8 per cent to $447,500 – the biggest drop since April 2012. Bindi Norwell, CEO at REINZ says: “As we’ve seen for some months now, prices across the
country have continued to increase, albeit at a slower rate than the increases we’ve seen in some regions for the last couple of years. Waikato is now the sixth region in the country to have exceeded the half a million dollar mark at least once – something, that a few months ago, we predicted would happen shortly. “The Auckland Region’s decrease of 3.2 per cent year-onyear is predominantly the result of a large number of apartments being sold in the old Auckland City boundary which has therefore brought the median price down for the entire region. Auckland City’s median fell by 17 per cent to $850,000 the lowest price it’s been for 16 months. Interestingly, Franklin District prices increased 16 per cent year-on-year to $737,000 and North Shore City remains New Zealand’s only million-dollar plus city,” she continues. “Looking at the REINZ House Price Index (HPI) for the legacy Auckland City it only decreased 0.8 per cent year-on-year, whereas the median for the same period fell by 17 per cent, highlighting that the drop in median price is not as dramatic as a first glance would suggest. This is because the HPI considers the mix and value of the property sold, not just the sales price,” points out Norwell.
Regional commentary Compared to October 2016 the median price fell 3 per cent to be $850,000. Papakura and Waitakere also had minor year-on-year falls whereas Manukau, North Shore and Rodney had minor year-onyear increases. The Auckland City TA had a massive drop year-on-year, but that was highly influenced by more apartment sales than usual this month. Compared to September 2017, most TA’s had an increase in median price with a tiny drop in Waitakere median and the aforementioned Auckland City median being the exceptions. Sales volume in the Auckland region decreased 0.9 per cent compared to September, with large falls in sales numbers in Papakura District, Manukau City and Waitakere City (12 per cent - 19 per cent decreases). Compared to October 2016, sales fell 21 per cent with volumes decreasing in all TA’s, except for Rodney District. Most notable drops occurred in Manukau City (-29 per cent), Auckland City (-24 per cent) and Franklin District (-22 per cent).

iding home to a 28-22 win over the Kiwis in Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup classic at Hamilton, Tonga scored a major victory of David versus Goliath proportions. Not that the powerful Tongans remotely resemble dwarfs in a physical sense. But like their South Pacific neighbours, Samoa and Fiji, they play for a tiny nation and are paid peanuts compared to their tier one opponents. While some tier one players are expected to be paid $50,000 each for the tournament, the decision of several former Kiwi internationals to play for Tonga, the nation of their birth or heritage, has come at considerable personal sacrifice. However there were no regrets judging from the joy on the faces of Jason Taumalolo, Sio Suia Taukeiaho, Manu Ma’u and three-try man of the match David Fusitu’a after their glorious Hamilton triumph. In overcoming a 16-2 halftime deficit to storm home,

It was a win which NZ Warriors rejects Tuimoala Lolohea and Konrad Hurrell also relished with Lolohea scoring a try and Hurrell’s pass setting up two of Fusitu’a’s three. University played host to Howick Pakuranga in their Auckland Premier cricket match at Colin Maiden Park on Saturday with both teams looking to continue their strong start to the season. Howick Pakuranga won the toss and chose to bat first in overcast conditions, Anthony Ireland getting University off to the perfect start taking a wicket with only the fourth ball of the match. Jeet Patel continued the momentum for the home side removing Bill Walsh and Andrew Morrison to give University the upper hand heading to lunch with the score at 85-3. David Winn and Donovan Grobbelaar steadied the ship putting on a patient 79-run partnership before Grobbelaar was dismissed by Ireland for a well-made 43 leaving the match evenly poised at 144-4. Winn made his half-century before being dismissed for 59, University took another wicket and suddenly found themselves on top with the score at 177-6. Cameron Neal proved to be the saviour for the boys from Lloyd Elsmore scoring a quickfire 50 off 46 balls, which ensured that Howick Pakuranga would set a decent total for University to chase. In the end, a very up and down day at Colin Maiden Park with both teams having their moments setting up a very entertaining day two with Howick Pakuranga finishing the day 313 all out. omerville Intermediate placed first in the schools division at the recent Steelformers Around The Mountain relay. The team of 17 runners each took at least one turn to run a leg of the tough 150km course, with the first leg starting at 2:30am. The team was off to a strong start with student Logan Marshall determined to give the team a good lead in less than ideal cold, dark and rainy conditions. Special mentions go to Kyle Low and Matthew Lindsay who both gave stellar performances on long distances and Matthew Barker who kept smiling with dad Michael Barker riding on his bike beside him. The weather began clearing around 6:30am when van two joined the race with the afternoon consisting of smooth transitions and runners who encouraged and supported their team. Amelia Carr showed complete perseverance when faced with hill after hill, while

He floated the new concept for Midnight Madness, which had never happened before in the township. “The idea put forward was to get all retailers together at the same time on the same night to open until midnight and to all have super specials.
“A contribution towards the advertising was requested and within five days we had the funds. “It was a spectacular success and is now a permanent fixture on the HVBA calendar,” says John. “Both Midnight Madness and the Howick Santa Parade have grown in popularity so much over the years that the need came to leave a reasonable gap between the two events. “The popularity of both events has continued to rise and has been the reason to change the day for the Santa Parade.” The Howick Santa Parade was moved to a Sunday in 2014 for the first time and this year, it’s again on Sunday, December 3 starting at 2.30pm. The popular Fencible Walk Park display and Snow Cave will again come to life as well as a special pre-Christmas public appearance by Santa Claus, one of the many features of Midnight Madness.

or years, shoppers have relied on Midnight Madness as a way to make a start on Christmas shopping while enjoying all the revelry and vibrant mood of Howick village. It’s a great night for all and a time where locals catch up and socialise, take advantage of fantastic bargains as well as celebrate the countdown to the big day. But how did it all begin? Midnight Madness first began in 1992 to complement the Howick Santa Parade. “The idea was to begin the Christmas season with a shopping promotion that was followed by the Howick Santa Parade,” says Mrs Foster. “In those years, the Santa Parade was the very next day.” John Lovell, a new jeweller in town at the time, says he invited “everyone” including Howick business owners and operators, to a breakfast meeting at the Information Centre.

anta’s decided to trial his Christmas routine early and will be in Howick tomorrow for Midnight Madness! The burly man in red will be meeting and greeting his fans from 7pm-9.30pm pm at the lighting display in Fencible Walk Park brought to life by the Howick Village Christmas Lights Charitable Trust on November 17. Catch him if you can! But if you don’t make it, fear not, he will be back on December 15 until Christmas Eve – 7pm -8.30pm, same place. Meanwhile, the lights will be up from 6pm-12pm on Midnight Madness, and will run from December 15-24, from 7pm-10pm. Another Midnight Madness fixture, East FM Radio, will be sharing the feel good vibes between Our Lady Star of the Sea Church and Barfoot & Thompson’s offices. Thanks to the community
broadcaster’s army of volunteer DJs, shoppers can tune in from 6pm. A dedicated team will be entertaining shoppers right through the night, and hosts will even be getting out on the street, interacting with and interviewing passersby. But how did the volunteer-run radio station broadcasting on 88.1FM & 107.1FM and become the indispensable community powerhouse it is today? Its beginnings can be traced back to founder Mike Rowse’s innovative pastime. A low-power radio buff, Mike had been running his own station from home for three years prior to the launch of Howick Village Radio in 2008, now East FM. He donated his equipment to the Howick Village Association (now the Howick Village Business Association or HVBA) on “perma-
nent loan”. Over the years, it has be-come a true voice for the community – a place for budding broadcasters and musicians to hone their art, as well as for local identities to connect with local listeners and shoot the breeze. In 2013, the fundraiser at The Good Home, raised $7500, which enabled the purchase of its own retro mobile caravan. Another fundraising evening was held at The Monterey on Monday. East FM is able to continue its good work in the community. A busy summer of outside broadcasts lies ahead for the team as they attend various community events including Howick Coastguard’s 60 year celebrations this Saturday, the successful Brit & Euro Car Show in March and the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday December 3.
