Never have I ever….smiled so much when I see cafes filled with people sharing stories and restaurants doing brisk business with family and friends meeting up. Can’t stop humming Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. Never have I ever….felt so good catching a glimpse of people booking their tickets at Flight Centre, Botany, a place that wore a deserted look for the last two years or more. Never have I ever ....taken a personal pride in businesses having the courage to get back on their feet after the crippling blow that Covid and lockdowns dealt them. Yes, the oft repeated term ‘new normal’ is now part of our lexicon which is probably why any kind of normalcy feels like manna from heaven. For instance, the pure delight on people’s faces as they hug their loved ones at the arrival
lounge at Auckland airport. It best describes happiness, in a world that has turned upside down. Disrupted classes in schools, paranoid parents constantly worrying about their children’s safety at school, seniors afraid to step out of their homes; teacher’s struggling to recognize their students with their masks on even as their glasses fog up in stuffy classrooms, the list is endless. Of course it’s not all gloom and doom. The upside is the hybrid workforce that has emerged from the virus adding a new spin to our lives. The option of working from home is a trend most mums enjoy as they don’t have to navigate their way to the workplace during peak hours. Even if it means you can hear the clatter of cutlery or a baby crying in the midst of a work conversation. It’s the era of mass resignations and millennials taking up a side hustle to supplement their main source of income. Self promotion on Insta has taken a new meaning with young, online entrepreneurs navigating the world of 15-seconds of attention span.
In the April issue that celebrates Easter, our junior home cooks have fun sharing more than 15-sec recipes; a go-getting Bo Burns talks about doing things differently during lockdown in the year that was. The hostess with the mostest, Val Lott takes us on a garden tour of her delightful patch of paradise. Also, in the month of Kidney Health, Peter Young shares how grateful he is for his gift of life. It’s been a year since his 71-year-old wife Pauline gave him a kidney. A visual feast awaits you as local artists showcase their beautiful works of art that tell a story of how they coloured/sculpted their world during lockdown, and what they look forward to, in the year ahead.

Eleven meters long, nearly three metres long and displayed in its hunting position, the Auckland War Memorial Hall will be the first ever museum in the world to display Peter the T.rex. This is one of a small number of almost complete fossil Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons in the world and the first real T. rex fossil ever to be exhibited in New Zealand. o G e h t n o o B She juggles more hats than she can count. Always on the run, Bo Burns is her energetic, driven and passionate self even if she is a little out of breath as she chats with FARIDA MASTER whilst on her evening run.
Different roles you play... I wear a few hats, my mother and wife hat, business owner hat of Fundraise Factory, Promo Factory and Cleave House, Howick Local Board Member hat, community events hat running the Howick Santa Parade, business networking hat, running Howick Click business owners forum, and finally my leisure friend hat where I get to exercise and see friends. (I seem to have a big wardrobe for all my hats). The role you love most... Being a mum and wife is my first and foremost love – creating magical memories and raising confident, logical and down-to- earth girls, but over and above that I love being a business owner. However, the key to my heart is helping people, whether it’s in the community or helping locals grow or start-up businesses, that’s what really floats my boat – sometimes it’s been to the detriment of my own goals and business but it’s engrained in my bloodline to help others. I love that. You can’t help being born an entreprenual community-minded person! Crazy about... Promoting East Auckland and Howick as a destination to visit, live, work and play! I’m a big fan of... Treating others how you like to be treated, and also mind over matter. I set my mind to something and strive to achieve it! Strategy for maintaining sanity whilst working from home... Teamwork, communication and family exercise! We found what worked best for our family was sticking to a strict routine and having separate areas for us to www.eastlife.co.nz
work from. The very first lockdown was challenging, but we had to stop, take a breath and get back into a routine. Then from there on we just reverted each time into that plan and it worked well. I am extremely proud of how my daughters coped and maintained their school work, full credit to them both. Things I did differently during lockdown to make my business work... We had to pivot hard and fast to PPE gear initially, this enabled us to keep the team of nine employed the last two years, even though it’s not our core business, it was about staying afloat and looking for any and every opportunity. What came from this drive were contacts, thousands of new businesses all over New Zealand that our team are now working towards building strong relationships with. I’m incredibly proud of my team, and how they coped. I also have loved moving to connecting with people on Teams/Zoom/Skype. I find it saves a lot of time not having to drive in Auckland traffic to meetings. Advice to my 10-year-old-self... You don’t have to please everyone, you can say ‘No’ once in a while. It’s okay to focus on just you every now and then, it’s good for you. When you meet those people in your college years that tell you won’t amount to be anything, don’t sweat it baby girl, you got this – the world’s your oyster and you can do anything you set your mind to! One day they will need you, that’s when your internal self can sit back and smile. Feel strongly about... Sharing knowledge, helping businesses
grow and connecting people, also a big one for me is keeping a positive mindset Pet peeve... Firstly, bad customer service Top: Brendan, Lucy, Charlie and Bo. drives me crazy. Bottom: Pip and Bo. Secondly, people not answering or after the dark cloudy times and replying to emails. Thirdly, people remembering to connect with constantly saying ‘I’m too busy’ people. If this means ‘having a ball’ – this would be with my husband and friends who we surprised two years ago with our renewing of vows on our 10-yearwedding anniversary in Palm Beach/Waiheke. My bucket list... To record a song, retrain myself to play the piano, to meet Oprah, to travel for 12 months with no work and to travel overseas to weird and wonderful places again with my amazing mum and family. Song that sums me up... ‘Rainbow Connections’ by Kermit Frog. For me it’s about looking for that bright side of life, that rainbow
Best day of my life... There are honestly too many great days in my life. I think the ‘the best day of my life’ recently, was the day my mother didn’t die in hospital. The relief and gratefulness that refilled my heart of how amazing, kind, passionate and driven she is was overwhelming. That has to be the highlight of the last few months and best day to remember her getting through that. She is outright my best friend on earth. Three top fundraising tips... Sudents from Macleans College put their best foot forward at the ASB Polyfest held recently.
The world’s largest Maori and Pacific Island festival, the ASB Polyfest was held at the Manukau Sports Bowl in a different format this year. While there were no crowds and stalls, hundreds of students got a chance to perform traditional speech, song and dance in front of ASB Polyfest judges this year.

Family and friends could watch these performances live online via the livestream coverage. ASB Polyfest event director, Seiuli Terri Leo Mau’u said, “Despite the challenges, we’ve had overwhelming support from students, schools and parents to go ahead with this year’s event in the livestream format. “The Polyfest allows students to celebrate and express who they are through their language and culture
– which is important for their sense of wellbeing, especially after the past two years of lockdowns and interruptions due to the pandemic.” Students arrived by bus, performed in front of the judges and hopped back on their buses straight after their performance. Over four days, 68 performing groups from 28 schools competed in speech, song and dance on the Cook Islands, Maori, Niue, Samoan, Tongan and a Diversity stage.

MATCH It’s been exactly a year since Peter Young’s wife Pauline gave one of her kidneys to him. In the month devoted to Kidney Health, which is a great opportunity to create awareness and share stories, Peter Young talks to FARIDA MASTER about his wife of 51 year being a perfect match for him.

She thinks nothing of it. Pauline Young says she doesn’t want to be made a hero for giving one of her organs to her husband Peter Young whose kidneys were steadily failing over the last few years. Her husband of 50 years had reached a dangerously low point with only three percent of his kidney functioning. The Howick Local Board member for Botany had only two options. He could either go in for dialysis twice a week for the rest of his life or opt for a kidney transplant. The latter option involved either a kidney donation by a loved one, getting a very expensive kidney transplant overseas or being on the waitlist for a cadaver kidney which could be years of stressful waiting, considering his age.

“The stress levels were high and then suddenly in the midst of the argument she said, ‘I’ll give you my kidney’ as we were driving to see the renal doctor. I couldn’t believe it, so I asked her if she was sure she wanted to do it.

Funnily, it was a heated argument that sealed the deal at the most unexpected moment.
“We were both on the edge and arguing about something,” says the 75-year-old board member
“She said she was certain and even told the doctor about it. After which we were sent to a psychologist to check if she was emotionally and psychologically fit to donate her kidney to me,” he says about the comprehensive screening process they had to go through to see if her kidney was the right fit for him. “There were scans, x-rays, blood tests to find out if we were the right www.eastlife.co.nz

It’s a long process.” In the month of March which is devoted to Kidney Health, Peter says that 40 years of being a vegetarian and being a volunteer at the Buddhist Temple worked well in his wife’s favour. She was considered fit to make the donation. When a 71-year-old Pauline confided to her close friends about going through the transplant surgery, her friends were genuinely worried for her. They tried to gently caution her saying she was putting her own health at risk to save her husband. There is always a risk involved in any surgery. Donating a kidney to a loved one is scary idea. Being a Buddhist at heart, Pauline didn’t want to make a big deal of it. “I just did it for selfish reasons,” she says making light of it. “I gave you my kidney so that I don’t have to drive you twice a week to the hospital for dialysis and then wait till you finish. This way I can go to the Buddhist temple and continue with my service,” she told her husband. Exactly one year after the kidney transplant and health scare, Peter says that due to good postoperative care and being treated by very skilled and good-hearted doctors, he is out of the woods. He feels young again! The major surgery didn’t stop founder of the Botany and Flat Bush Ethic Association from
continuing his community work two month after the surgery. Talking about their recovery he says the very next day after the kidney transplant, his wife walked up to his hospital bed to find out how he was doing. “She is a strong woman,” he says full of admiration. “Pauline does not want any thank you. She is like a lot of Buddhist monks who donate their kidney without even wanting to find out who they donated it to. “They don’t want any acknowledgement for it,” he says of the altruistic gesture which is considered highly rewarding. “Even our renal doctor said that more people need to be aware that a person can easily function with
one kidney if it is a healthy one.” Peter attributes his recovery to the fact that he kept healthy with plenty of exercise and acupuncture treatment prior to the major surgery. He is also grateful to New Zealand’s health system that allowed him to have a free kidney transplant under very good care. “We have a very good health system and I am so thankful for that,” he says. The couple recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary and Pauline’s birthday with flowers and cake. It was also a celebration of the fact that they had both survived a major surgery with Pauline giving Peter a gift of life as a true act of love. A PIECE OF PARADISE THAT TELLS A STORY Member of the Auckland Rose Society and the Pigeon Mountain Garden Club, Val Lott is known for her delightful garden tours and parties she hosts at her hidden gem, nestled in Howick. I always referred to my beautiful pageant girls as my rose buds that blossomed into beautiful roses. And I love having many rose varieties blooming in my country style garden. From standard white icebergs roses, to colourful floribunda and hybrid tea, surrounded with many shrubs, perennial and annual flowers. It is twenty-six years since I bought my current home from a popular teacher at Maclean’s College, Dennis Martin and his wife Margaret, a teacher at Pakuranga College. The section at the back was an orchid of fruit trees and a vegetable garden. As a young mum I spent every free hour in the garden. On retiring

six year ago I was able to spend eight hours a day, five days a week working on it, and now I can enjoy a well-established country style garden. Gardening is such amazing therapy as you work with the soil, and its great exercise. After thirty-two years as a single mum, I met my wonderful husband, Allan Parker. Al has been instrumental in structurally developing pergolas, deckings and a wonderful sun-house to enhance my garden. Al spent years as a painter – decorator, transforming homes and I spent years transforming many young people’s lives. Together, we have transformed my garden into our little piece of paradise. We now open our garden, to garden tours, small weddings and private groups for morning tea and lunches.”

“During the lockdown I truly found my passion and honed my skills in creating the 5-meter large scale corten sculpture titled `Head Within’ at Sculpture on the Gulf, an outdoor exhibition at Waiheke Island,” says the Clevedon-based sculptor who grew up in a creative household with two artist parents. “I have been very humbled by the response to my work. ‘Head Within’ aims to prompt a conversation on mental health in Aotearoa among visitors to the 2022 sculpture trail. “Mental health remains a serious issue in our country and around the world. I want my work to keep the conversation going about a topic which is often shied away from,” says Jorge who spent a few years at Massey University exploring a design degree. www.eastlife.co.nz
“This has further motivated me to reach for new heights and continue to make a mark in the world of sculpture. On one level, the sculpture conveys the feelings of confusion and self-estrangement that often accompany mental health struggles; nestled into one another but facing in different directions, they illustrate a mind turned against itself with feelings of doubt and insecurity. The openness of the figure, however, encourages those struggling to ask for help. By being transparent and allowing others to enter our inner world, it suggests, we can also let some light back in. I want to remind those going through dark times that there are brighter days ahead. “I envision a long career where I can inspire and JU1952
create change through the messages my works will deliver,” says Jorge who is now teaming up with All Blacks legend, Sir John Kirwan Foundation for mental health.

Amber Adams: ARTIST AND ART TEACHER “My artwork has always meant the world to me and Covid has had a major impact on my art,” says Amber Adams who has been teaching art at Uxbridge for 12 years and also runs home-based classes. “Before Covid, exhibitions were plenty and we constantly had places to showcase my artwork which I took for granted. Covid has taught me I needed to take positive action and show my art

in other ways and rely more on online marketing and galleries,” says Amber who is known to design pieces that tell a story. “My art has taken a different direction and I have started to use a lot more colour and vibrancy throughout my work. My style I feel has become a lot more free.” Amber’s latest series is inspired more
by pop art using fluorescent colours and words. “I love faces of the past and the stories they tell, and being able to learn and bring them into my art. WILDLIFE ARTIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER “I often photograph my art and create a panel for displaying in the garden. I get to keep the art I paint whilst allowing others to enjoy it also,” says Sue Collyns who has found the perfect way to combine her artistic talents and passion for photography to create a unique business – Wild on Walls Outdoor Garden Art. Whilst she missed interacting with people during lockdown, the silver lining was that Sue’s website www.wildonwalls. co.nz took a huge leap. “It was one of my busiest times. I decided to run a competition in Omana Regional Park for the locals out walking.” The talented artist hid one of her native bird outdoor garden art panels ‘Baby Ru Ru’ amongst the trees, and posted clues on where to find it each day on the local grapevine.
“I began to receive photos of local children standing beside the panel when they found him; it was amazing and such fun for all! Eventually the winner of the panel was found. I received a beautiful thank you text from a young lady telling me it was her favourite bird and how much she enjoyed hunting for him.” Now Sue looks forward to travelling overseas. “There are so many amazing places to photograph,” she says. eastlife | april 2022 |

What is your favourite trend this season? I’m a rock chick as heart so I’m glad that the coated slim leg pant is on trend, teamed with a crisp white shirt. I also love the tiered midi and maxi dresses because they are so easy to wear – we have gorgeous floral ones in this season. They look great with a boot or sneaker and teamed with soft knitwear. What is this season’s must-have item? Definitely a white shirt with a vest layered over the top. We have a range of white shirts from fitted to oversized, and ones with romantic puff sleeves. A shirt is a great addition to the wardrobe – you will have it forever. The vest is a perfect pop over for trans-seasonal dressing. What is your advice for women stuck in a fashion rut? I know the feeling! Even though I work in the industry, I sometimes get fed up wearing the same things. Ever so often I have a ‘wardrobe
edit’ and try to be ruthless, donating to charity anything that doesn’t make me feel good when I wear it. It’s surprising how therapeutic that exercise can be. Occasionally you find gems you’ve forgotten about and charity shops are always grateful for donations. When you have done that, you can have a better gauge on what is missing from your wardrobe. Pop down to your friendly boutique (or Apt Collections store) and have some fun. Ask the girls to recommend a few outfits and have a try on. Think about how you can mix items you already have with some items that might be a new shape or colour. I think it’s always worth trying new shapes, quite often they look quite different on the hanger than on, and you might surprise yourself with how good they look! What is your favourite piece of fashion advice? Don’t think you have to wear something just because it’s ‘on trend’. There are so many options on offer these days. Pick a style that suits you and makes you feel comfortable and confident so you can feel great and be the best you.

Frustration with glasses and mask wearing Almost every person who wears glasses has expressed frustration with fogging while wearing a face mask. Solutions for fogginess that occurs due to your warm breath escaping from the top of the mask may include: • Ensure your mask has an adjustable strip to optimise a tight fit across the nose • Wash your glasses in soapy water each day before wearing • Use an antifog spray or cloth on your lenses • Consider contact lenses as an alternative to glasses
An increase in dry eye: While dry eye may occur for a number of reasons, changes we have had to adopt over the past couple of years has led to an increase in dry or irritable eye complaints. The possible causes are: • Increased use of digital devices: When we read, and in particular when concentrating on a digital screen our blink rate reduces and our blinks may become incomplete. This in turn causes disruption to our tear film quality and stability • Mask associated dry eye (MADE): Just as the exhaled air fogs your glasses it can also increase the evaporation of your tear film causing or

exacerbating dry eye. This is particularly evident if you are a digital device user or wear your mask more than three hours per day TIPS • Take regular screen breaks, remember the 20-20-20 rule • If your eyes feel dry take the time to make 10 slow, deliberate blinks • Ensure your mask is fitting as snugly as possible, but ensure there is no tension on your lower lid. • Consider taping the top edge of the mask lightly to the face using surgical tape • Use an ocular lubricant on a regular basis—preservativefree is best Increase in stye or eyelid cysts To quote a 2021 study: “This issue has been largely associated with poorly fitting masks that allow the upward travel of breath over the eye, increasing microbial exposure to the ocular surface which is potentially exacerbated by the poor hygiene of cloth, nondisposable masks that become contaminated with bacteria from the face and exhaled breath.”

Daily disposables have the lowest incidence of ocular surface infections Increase in myopia or visual dysfunction Studies have shown an increase in child myopia progression during the pandemic due to prolonged online learning. It being stated that each hour increase in digital device use was associated with a 1.25x increased risk of developing myopia symptoms. Conversely, children who were being schooled at home and spent two hours outdoors each day reduced their risk of myopia progression. School children who are subject to more online learning are also exhibiting an increase in eye strain signs and symptoms. A recent study looked at healthy children after a day of ‘virtual school’. There was a 53 per cent increase in eyestrain symptoms such as headache, tired eyes and ability to focus easily and comfortably. I am certainly seeing an increase in patients of all ages, who due to our increase in vision demands are experiencing signs and symptoms of visual dysfunction. So once again, important to give those peepers regular breaks throughout the day and see your optometrist to ensure your vision and focus is where it should be.

EASTER EGG NESTS Makes 12-16
INGREDIENTS • 125g butter • 200g dark chocolate, coarsely chopped • 2/3 cup caster sugar • 1tsp vanilla extract • 3 eggs • 2/3 cups self-raising flour, sifted • Chocolate Butter Frosting or Green Coconut Icing (recipes follow) • Mini chocolate Easter eggs, to decorate Chocolate Butter Frosting • 50g butter, softened • 1 cup icing sugar, sifted • 2 tbsp cocoa powder, sifted • 1tsp vanilla essence • 2 tbsp boiling water Green Coconut Icing • 1 cup shredded coconut • A few drops of green food colouring
METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease muffin tin or line with paper casings. Melt butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan one-quarter full of gently simmering water. Or, microwave for 2 minutes (in short bursts) to melt. Stir until smooth.

2. Add sugar and vanilla and beat with an electric mixer until combined. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add flour and beat just enough to combine. 3. Spoon mixture into prepared tin or paper cases. Bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre of one cake

ICED BISCUITS INGREDIENTS • 125g butter • 1/2 cup Chelsea sugar • 1 tbsp Chelsea golden syrup • 1 tbsp Meadow Fresh milk • 1 1/2 cups Edmonds Standard Grade Flour • 1 tsp Edmonds Baking Soda
METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Combine the butter, sugar, golden syrup and milk in a saucepan over a medium heat. Heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is almost boiling, stirring constantly. www.eastlife.co.nz
Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to lukewarm. Sift the flour and baking soda together, add to the cooled mixture and stir well. Roll tablespoonful of the mixture into balls, place on the prepared tray and press down with a floured fork.
Bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown. Leave on the tray for 1–2 minutes then place on a wire rack to cool. For icing, use Chelsea icing sugar with one tsp butter and hot water with food colouring of choice and sprinkles on the top. eastlife | april 2022 |

CHOCOLATE COCONUT / PEANUT BUTTER EGGS INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •
50g butter, softened 1/2 cup cream cheese 2 1/2 cups icing sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 cup peanut butter or 1 1/4 cup desiccated coconut
EQUIPMENT: Coating: • 250g chocolate melts • Hundreds and Thousands Sprinkles (optional)
• Cup and spoon measures • Scale • Glass jug to use in the microwave • Butter knife to stir • Baking tray • Baking paper
METHOD: 1. Cover an oven tray with baking paper. 2. In a bowl, mix all ingredients (except the chocolate) with a hand mixer until combined. (This is where you get to choose whether the eggs are coconut eggs or peanut butter).
3. Wet your hands, then mould a tablespoons sized egg shape and place on the tray. 4. Break up the chocolate into a microwave safe glass jug. Heat in the microwave for 40-50 seconds on high. Take it out and stir it with a butterknife. If it starts to melt while stirring,
keep stirring. If it needs more time and is still not melted, put it back in the microwave for another 30-40 seconds. Take it out and continue to stir it with a butter knife. Be careful not to overcook! 5. Dip the ‘egg’ into the melted (hopefully not so hot)
chocolate to cover. Place on the tray. 6. Sprinkle with Hundreds and Thousands or sprinkles of your choice, or re drizzle with white chocolate even! 7. Place on the baking tray and leave to set in the fridge.

Prep Time – 30 minutes
INGREDIENTS • 170g 50 per cent dark chocolate, finely chopped • 1 tbsp coconut oil • 1/3 cup coconut milk • 1 pinch sea salt • 1/2 tsp cloves, ground • 1 tbsp organic maple syrup
• 2 drops ginger essential oil • 2 drops cinnamon bark essential oil • 1 drop nutmeg essential oil • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for rolling
Combine the coconut oil, organic maple syrup, coconut milk and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer (do not boil). Pour the mixture over the reserved chopped chocolate. Let stand for 1-2 minutes, then stir gently until completely melted and smooth. Stir in the ground clove and cinnamon bark, ginger and nutmeg essential oils. Refrigerate for approximately two hours, until mixture is just set. www.eastlife.co.nz
He assures food technology, home economics, and hospitality teachers and students that the trust has developed a strategy to ensure the challenge proceeds this year without any Covid interruptions. Part of that strategy is to move the eight regional semi-finals online where teams of two students (with their teacher as their manager) will prepare and present an entrée with beetroot as the ‘hero’ of the dish.
METHOD: Place the chopped chocolate in a heat-proof bowl and set aside.
“This competition is more important than ever now. The hospitality industry has taken a hell of a hit in the last two years and our industry colleagues will be looking to New Zealand more than ever before for students coming through who can fill roles. Given everything we’ve gone through during the pandemic, it is really important,” says Mark.
With a small scoop or spoon, make 12 balls, rolling each between the palms of your hands until smooth. Place 1/4 cup of cocoa powder in the bottom of a shallow plate or dish. Roll each truffle in the cocoa until coated. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes until firm. Remove from refrigerator and let stand at room temperature 10 minutes before serving. Makes a dozen truffles.
Once they have presented their dish it must be photographed to demonstrate all its components. Students will need to fill in a questionnaire to demonstrate the thought process and skill behind their dish. Over $8000 worth of prizes will be awarded in the semi-final. A finalist team from each of the eight regions will then compete in a live kitchen challenge at Manukau Institute of Technology in Auckland on September 7 where $12,000 in prizes is up for grabs including a Moffat E23M3 oven for the winning school. A finalist entrée in 2019 where carrots were the hero of the dish.

NEW ZEALAND’S HOUSING MARKET Last year, house prices in New Zealand increased by more than 20 per cent, while it was also reported that in the third quarter of last year global house price growth rose to an all time high [1]. Even before we’d ever heard of Covid-19, there was concern over the country’s ‘housing crisis’, with rising prices (along with other factors) leading to increasing unaffordability. So where to from here? From an investment perspective, for some investors, New Zealand housing is considered, “as safe as houses”. This is not necessarily the case. More supply, higher mortgage rates and a brake on credit, are all factors which may result in less appealing returns for investors in the future. A meaningful correction in prices in 2022 is possible. The first thing any economics student learns is that when demand exceeds supply, prices typically rise. And when interest rates fall, house prices climb. New Zealand now ranks as one of the most expensive housing markets globally. Mid last year Bloomberg named New Zealand the ‘frothiest’ housing market in the world. And the latest Demographic International Housing Affordability Survey ranked Auckland as the fourth least affordable city in the world. The recent increase in mortgage rates means debt servicing is now

likely to consume a lot more of household incomes, increasing financial pressure for some families at a time when increasing inflation is also affecting the price of many goods and services.

T S U L R E D N A W BREATHTAKING VISTAS Travel to Peru was on superyacht chef Jamie Neben’s bucket list. When he didn’t get a spot in MIQ lottery to return to New Zealand he instead travelled to Peru’s capital city of Lima.
“I then flew to Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes which was once capital of the Inca Empire, and is now known for its archaeological remains and Spanish colonial architecture. It’s only a short flight but being up in the mountains, I had altitude sickness as my body had not acclimatised to it. I initially freaked out thinking I had Covid, but later realised it was the altitude that was playing tricks with my body,” says Jamie Neben, the travel buff. After a motorcycle tour to the salt mines, with a guide who spoke little English, they boarded a train from Cusco to

the town of Machu Picchu, set high in the Andes Mountains. It was a 4am start, the next morning with guide Carlos. “He challenged me to climb Wayna Pikchu (the peak you can see in the pictures of Machu Picchu). Not wanting to pass up a challenge (his fastest time was 30min), we pushed on. I tell you never try and beat a Peruvian hiking guide to the top of a hill even if he is 20 years older than you. We made it in 47min. I was exhausted. (See picture of me using the sign to hold myself up). “The view from the top— a different perspective of Machu
Picchu was beautiful (see photo). We then headed back to the city for a much-needed beer. The following day I walked around the city to check out the local market. Being a chef, I enjoy visiting local markets in every country. To my horror I found that guinea pig was a national dish. I had to try it. The taste wasn’t bad but because it was served whole, with all parts intact, it did get to me a bit. “The next day I did another motorcycle tour to Rainbow Mountain. After two hours on the bikes we made it to the top car park. My guide told me it was about an hour and a half
on foot to the summit. Not thinking much, off I went. The first 30minutes were easy but the last 400m of altitude (5200m all up) got very hard. I couldn’t take deep breaths and started to regret the weight of my camera and drone on my back. My steps got very small from then on. After taking in the sites and getting a few photographs, just as I was I was on my way back, a thunderstorm came out of nowhere, and everything got a dusting of snow. “Safe to say I made it down to hike another day.”
