is heart rate shoots up a little every time someone approaches him to talk at a supermarket or on the street. And then there’s sweet relief when he realises that people are only being kind with words of encouragement. The beleaguered Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has had a rough run since the free-for-all ugly political fallout with the National Party and his friendturned-foe Simon Bridges, in October. He says that he is touched by people’s kindness and compassion towards him. “Even when you think that everyone is against you, you will find people who care for you. I have got so much strength and motivation from human kindness that I have been touched by and for that I am truly grateful,” he says, getting a tad emotional. Just three days away from attending the first day at Parliament, he openly admits that given a second chance, he would have done things very differently when he got into `flight or fight mode’ with Bridges. He now wants to make

I will work hard at grassroots politics. I will go back to basics and stay focussed. I will be more accessible since I don’t have the obligation to travel to other MP’s electorates. People will see me a lot more now in my patch. My Botany office is now open. “I will prove to them what I am capable of and I do appreciate all the criticism that I have got. “Abbess Manshin of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple told me, ‘don’t just talk to people that you mean differently. Prove it to the people’. And that’s what I intend to do.
“This has been a huge wakeup call. I have suffered a big life shock finding myself locked up in a mental health facility with a stainless steel toilet attached to it. That’s the time it hit me and I wondered how did I get there? “I’ve decided to stand up again and prove that my apology for the sorrow I have caused to my dear and near ones and to the people in my electorate is genuine.” Ross, who has done a lot of introspection, says he feels strangely liberated. “Since I am an independent candidate now and don’t have to think of any party policies or background in three seconds flat when I am being asked a question, I can be more honest. I have much more flexibility... can now talk to MPs of all parties and get things done. “I have no hate for anyone in Parliament.” Admitting that in October he was driven by hate-fuelled rage he says he has learned from those around him that no amount of political pointscoring is worth hurting family, friends and constituents. “We all spend too much time fighting and bickering. “We need to remember that

Autumn series gets underway It’s time for the Autumn Series of the very popular Thursdays @ Seven concerts at All Saints Church, Howick to get underway. The first concert is on Thursday February 28, 7-8pm. Leading NZ pianist Ludwig Treviranus presents a programme called ‘Fantasy’, including music by father and son, JS Bach and CPE Bach, and also Scriabin and Liszt. It’s sure to be a great opener for the series with plenty of pianistic beauty and fireworks. The Autumn Series has also been supported by Howick Local Board with a grant towards a later concert entitled Massive, coming up on April 4. But meanwhile there are a line up of concerts to enjoy every Thursday evening. Thursdays @ Seven offers audiences a chance to enjoy 21 one-hour concerts each year of intimate chamber works, which will almost never be performed in large concert halls. These concerts are truly personal, with a rare chance to chat to artists afterwards. he God of Wealth was there in full regalia as members of the Pakuranga Chinese Association met up on Saturday at Fortunes Restaurant, Ti Rakau Dr, for a foodie feast to bring in the New Year. Organised by Barry Hung the much loved founder of the Pakuranga Chinese Association, the membership of the association that was once around 400 has now jumped to over 800 members. And while it was impossible to fit in all the members for a Friday lunch, the Saturday celebration was held to accommodate members who didn’t manage a table the day before. Non-stop plates of sumptuous Chinese food arrived but the dish that everyone looked forward to is the fleshy fish that symbolises prosperity. There were lucky dips and plenty of prizes given away. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, who is soon going to be a firsttime dad, also managed to get away from a pre-natal class he was attending with wife Rebecca and dropped into the restaurant to wish the Chinese members a very Happy Year of the Pig, in Mandarin. The Times also wishes all its Asian readers a very happy and prosperous new year.

t 80-years-old, Laurie Hayward knows his way around a classic. The former engineer has spent almost a year giving new life to an old E-Type Jaguar, something he calls a labour of love. And next month you’ll be able to admire his hard work at the Brit & Euro Car Show. “I’ve been a Jag enthusiast since the 60s and an owner of seven Jags since 1982,” he says. “I bought this down in the mouth E type last year and added to my ‘66 and 2000 S type collection. “I then put hundreds of hours of my time, which has been a great pleasure, giving it new life.” Laurie said the 51-year-old E-type needed a lot of tender love and care, and he was only too happy to take on the project. He removed the back seat, built a storage locker with ply and cov-
ered it in carpet, as is standard in all open two-seater jags and reinstalled the sun visors with all new fittings. He refurbished the seats and moved them back to make entry and exit into the car easier, which required extending the pedals and steering wheel. Laurie has also completely reupholstered the doors and the interior in two-tone leather and vinyl. “The fold-down hood also had some serious problems which involved the removal of the frame, disassembly of the same and repainting prior to repairing the damaged parts and how down clips,” he says. “The windscreen wipers didn’t work and replacement parts from England required the complete removal of the dashboard. Not an easy job for 80-year-old hands and bones,” he laughs. He then moved onto the boot where he replaced the petrol tank, the ply, the boot opener
and cable. But there’s still plenty more work to be done. However the restoration will go on hold so that Laurie can proudly show off his Jag at the fourth annual Brit and Euro Car Show at Lloyd Elsmore Park on March 3. The underneath of the bonnet will be completely stripped, repainted and rebuilt. Laurie also plans to install EZ power steering to make parking “old-man-friendly”, he says. But he says this project will be his last. “After this work is completed I suspect reality will set in and this will bring an end to my car restoration years,” he says. “But my love affair with Jags will live on, as will being married to Pat. We were wed in 1961, the year the first E-types were built.” ➤➤The Brit and Euro Classic Car Show will be held at Lloyd Elsmore Park on March 3 from 10am.

Youth Council launches consultation on T2 Lane The Howick Youth Council has this week launched a youth-focused consultation on Auckland Transport’s plan to introduce a T2/Bus Lane on Pakuranga Road. The consultation aims to offer clarity around the views of youth in East Auckland and ensure that youth voices are heard in important decisions regarding public transport in East Auckland. “Youth are one of the key stakeholders in public transport because it’s usually our only means of getting around. “Auckland Transport should always conduct extensive consultation with youth when they make choices around public transport,” says Howick Youth Council chairperson Jack Collins. magine waking up to the pungent smell of the neighbourhood’s sewage overflowing into your backyard. This was the reality for one Pakuranga family who woke on Saturday January 19 to find waste water
pouring out of the gully trap on their property, flooding the garden and underneath their home. The Guyan family, who live on the lower end of Gossamer Drive directly above the main sewerage pipe for the neighbourhood, spent an entire day trying to prevent their home from flooding with sewage.

A fond farewell for Paulette Paulette Trotter has been to Welfare Officer of the Howick RSA for almost quarter of a century. It’s a job she has made her own over the years, as the services provided grew as the needs changed. Paulette was always on hand to support veterans, their families and members with a kind word, a hug, or advice on things related to Veterans’ Affairs, Work and Income NZ, home care, funeral arrangements, hospital visits or just a friendly and sympathetic ear. Her support at special club occasions such as Anzac Day, a mark of her commitment to her role and the RSA and the members, especially her ‘oldies”, the veterans. As a Justice of the Peace she made herself available at the club or even visited homes to expedite those much-needed JP signatures
At a special farewell afternoon tea in Paulette’s honour at the Howick RSA on January 31, Madeleine East MNZM, Deputy Chairperson of the Poppy and Welfare Trusts, made a presentation. She noted Paulette’s commitment to the role and her dedication to those who needed support, showing genuine concern and compassion, touching so many lives during her years in the role, not just veterans but their families and other members of the RSA community needing support. “You have made the role your own Paulette, leaving very big shoes to fill.” Paulette is now looking forward to spending more time at the beach and with her own family as she moves into her muchdeserved retirement years.
The only way to protect their home was to dig trenches and cut a large hole into their retaining wall to divert the waste water away. A substantial amount of waste water had already collected beneath their home, while the rest of it poured into the stream behind their house. “It was horrendous and we had absolutely no idea what to do. Faeces and toilet paper were several inches deep. But it took more than 30 minutes to get through to someone at Watercare on their emergency line,” says Annelies Guyan. “We found Watercare extremely slow to react. The first two people who turned up to our house were largely unhelpful and weren’t able to tell us what could be done. “Meanwhile my husband is desperately trying to stop the sewage from leaking into our home.” The couple say it took less than three seconds to fill a 10 litre bucket. They estimate more than 80,000 litres of sewage came out of the gully trap between 8am and 3pm when the flow finally stopped. “We had also been in contact with the fire service who said they said they couldn’t believe that Watercare hadn’t yet done anything to slow down the overflow. Unfortunately they were unable to help unless the water literally seeped into our house.” Guyan said she and her family are furious because they were promised by Manukau Water that yearly maintenance of the sewerage pipe would be undertaken. “They haven’t cleaned these pipes in years, and it was just a matter of time before this happened.” Guyan said it wasn’t until around 12.45pm when a senior Watercare employee arrived that the family were given any direction or apology. At 4pm, after more than seven hours of constant overflow, a cleanup crew arrived. Guyan said they did a good job, but she was shocked that nobody from watercare was present to oversee the clean up. She and her husband, who know nothing about waste management and clean-up, were responsible for pointing them in the right direction, she says. “There ended up being areas we forgot to tell them about that should

have been tended to that weren’t.” She said the clean-up crew also needed to remove large sections of infected soil and they are unsure if this will be replaced. Guyan says they were left with sewage underneath their home, and uncertainty over whose responsibility it is to clean it up. “Watercare are adamant that they are not responsible for the clean-up underneath the house, even though it was their sewerage system that flooded it,” she says. Guyan says she wonders what has been done to ensure the stream behind their house, which flows into the Tamaki Estuary, is safe and free of contamination. “Who knows how much damage this has done to the stream and the surrounding environment, not to mention the threat to the health and safety of us and the whole community.” When Guyan contacted the Times, Watercare had not been in touch with the family and nobody had been sent to reassess the waste water under the house. Since the Times contacted Watercare, they have been back out to the property and assisted in the cleanup of the underneath of the house. “Unfortunately, an overflow did occur at this property on Gossamer Drive at the weekend. The previous overflow was 10 years ago, in 2009,” says Rachel Hughes, a Watercare spokesperson. “After the resident called us, our crew arrived onsite within 30
minutes. They found the pipe was blocked with rubbish (e.g. sanitary products and wet-wipes) as well as cooking fat. “They cleared the pipe and cleaned the affected area. The crew tested the affected stream and detected low levels of ammonia, indicating very low levels of contamination.” Hughes said Watercare were unaware of any ongoing issues. She says Watercare are unable to calculate the volume of wastewater that overflowed, but say based on the size of the pipe and the low level of ammonia detected, it would not have been 80,000 litres. Watercare carry out routine flushing in areas where there are recurring overflows, Hughes says. “We believe this pipe hasn’t been flushed in the past few years because the pipe has been operating effectively for 10 years. However, because it overflowed at the weekend, it will return to a pipe flushing programme.” Hughes says they will continue working with the community to educate them on the cause of overflows and how they can prevent them.

t’s not very often that a politician gives credit to a member of the opposition, but that is exactly what Minister of Education Chris Hipkins graciously did at the opening of new school Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School on Flat Bush Road. Hipkins acknowledged former education minister Nikki Kaye for her contribution to the launch of the school. Kaye, who was trying to appear as nondescript as possible as she kept her distance from being centre stage, looked pleasantly surprised. Hipkins also said that he loved the welcome sign the kids had specially made for him. “Whenever I’m at these type of events I think of the wonderful quote from Winston Churchill. ‘First we shape our building then they shape us,’- particularly true where schools are concerned,” he said. Foundation principal Mel Bland, who spent almost a year working out of Ormiston Junior College during construction, was as enthusiastic as the students. An emotional Bland acknowledged the foundation staff members, board of trustees, caretaker and the people who built the school, as well as the company that designed the school uniforms and the handful of foundation students that have enrolled at the school.

Lam said he had never seen an accident this bad in his career. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Inspector Cornell Kluessein said three cars - an SUV, a four-wheel drive and a wagon - were waiting at the lights on Botany Rd when the third car was rearended. He said the fourth car came up at a high speed and crashed into the back of the third car shunting all three cars forward. The person driving the car that crashed into the back of Mr Hu was trapped initially and had to be removed by the fire brigade. The person in that fourth car, a Holden sedan, was taken to Middlemore Hospital. Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen, or who has dash camera footage of an older model Holden Commodore executive vehicle being driven prior to the crash. Police believe the vehicle may have been in the areas around Botany Road, Ridge Road, Bleakhouse Road, Pakuranga Highway and Aviemore Drive. ore than $100,000 has been raised through a givealittle page for the family of the man killed while stopped at a Botany intersection. Zhengwen Alan Hu, 50, died after his car was rear-ended while he and the drivers of two other vehicles were waiting at a red light at the busy Ti Rakau Drive and Botany Road intersection around 5pm on Monday, January 28, the Auckland Anniversary holiday. A Givealittle page was set up over the weekend by Dr Jacky Lam who was one of the first people on the scene when Hu was killed. Thousands of donations have been made by people and businesses all around the country. As of midday Monday, February 4 $159,270 had been raised for Hu’s wife and children. “Alan leaves behind his devoted wife and two young daughters aged 8 and 11. They went from a perfectly happy, healthy family to utter devastation in the blink of an eye,” Dr Lam says. “Their lives have been torn apart and it’s hard to imagine how long and arduous the journey to recovery will be. On top of the sorrow of losing her husband and their dad, they are now in financial hardship from the loss of his income.” Lam told the Herald he arrived on the scene shortly after 5pm and worked with emergency services and a trainee nurse to try and save Hu’s life.

say on whether they think it will make a difference,” he says. The proposal would see the left westbound lane on Pakuranga Road heading towards Panmure turned into a T2/Bus Lane. This is part of a wider traffic management plan which would include a Park and Ride service from Lloyd Elsmore Park and express bus services to the Panmure train station. Brown says AT’s refusal to consult the public is frustrating. “This is a major change to one of the most heavily trafficked roads in the country. Statistics suggest that if Pakuranga Road was a State Highway, it would be the 4th or 5th busiest in the country. This of course comes as no surprise to Pakuranga and Howick residents who rely on this road every day to get to and from work and everywhere in between. The vast majority of people living in east Auckland work outside the east Auckland area, so a change like this could have a significant impact on their daily travel.” Brown says consultation by AT should be a requirement and a priority so that the community who frequent Pakuranga Road get a say on what will work best for traffic management. “Failing to consult with communities before major changes are made is becoming AT’s

AT spokesperson Matt Poland has said formal public consultation has not been undertaken because these are “temporary, essential traffic management measures” to minimise congestion during a construction period as opposed to “permanent changes to the road layout”. The T2/Bus Lane is expected to be in place through the AMETI Eastern Busway construction period of two years. Construction of the next stage is planned to commence in April and AT are aiming to launch the new park and ride / express service option a few weeks prior to work commencing.
But Brown says if AT won’t consult the community, he will. Last week Brown launched a survey that will give affected motorists the chance to have their say. He says he intends to present the results to AT. “This survey will also ask respondents their opinion on another proposal to reduce traffic along Pakuranga Road – a Park and Ride at Lloyd Elsmore Park with shuttle buses to Panmure Train Station,” he says. Brown will also be hosting a public meeting on Wednesday February 27 to discuss these issues. hen Pauline Bolton first suggested that they capture time in a capsule, she didn’t think the management at Edgewater Retirement Village would take her seriously. At that point of time she had no clue about the amount of work and research that goes into putting memorabilia into a capsule that will be opened in 50 years. Soon a committee of enthusiasts wanting to contribute to a time capsule was formed. A lot of brain-storming and talking to the conservation department at the Auckland Museum later, the nifty team of seniors were wiser. “We were told that we couldn’t use paper clips, plastic, metal, leather, wool, wood, ordinary paint, oil or rubber,” says Pauline who mooted the idea. “There has to be no moisture or acids.” Bev Macnaughtan who is an ace at scrapbooking and has spent many man hours creating lots of beautiful scrapbooks for the village, says that they had to use acid free paper with no staples or paper clips. “We had to be careful not to include anything that would disintegrate.” While there were a few naysayers, the go-getting team wasn’t going to allow a couple of discouraging remarks dampen their enthusiasm. Instead they divided the jobs between them and got working

Bev worked on fashion and the style quotient of their times while Adrienne Jury, a skilled artist, did what she does best, sketch cartoons and impressions of the retirement village for posterity. “How we do our banking, transport, medical care, films photographs of various activities, trips, sport, TV guides and the Herald as well as the Howick and Pakuranga Times have all be fitted into the glass capsule,” says Pauline. Helen Paton says this was their chance to have a bit of a laugh and a gossip...even as they wondered where the time capsule will be put down. Everyone contributed to it depending on the talent they had— and everything was

The planter now has a special place of pride at the retirement village which is currently going through major renovations. “Fifty years later, the residents of the village will open the capsule and discover how we lived,” smiles Pauline who is currently looking for another major project to take on.

Something in the water The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra this month will perform in Auckland and Wellington two of the best-loved pieces of baroque music ever written. The concert Water Music, at Wellington’s Cathedral of St Paul and Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City, features Georg Philipp Telemann’s Water Music and George Frideric Handel’s Water Music. The pieces, written six years apart, are considered two of the finest works of the baroque period, 1600-1750. Water Music is the first of the NZSO’s 2019 Baroque Series of concerts, directed by the Orchestra’s Concertmaster. Further concerts in the year will also feature works by baroque masters Vivaldi, Fux and Corelli in Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton. Water Music will also be performed in Invercargill in September. The Baroque Series follows the NZSO’s sold-out baroque concert Back to Bach at the Cathedral of St Paul in 2018. “Baroque music is classical music at its purest and most transparent, while still including all the elements of human emotion,” says Leppänen. “As we perform without a conductor, we rely upon and react to one another making the performance experience intense and inclusive.” Numerous baroque works were first performed in churches and for the Baroque Series the NZSO has secured the Cathedral of St Paul, St-Matthew-in-the-City and Hamilton’s Holy Trinity Cathedral. “Where we perform baroque music is very important. Leppänen says Telemann’s Water Music, which premiered in 1723, is an inventive orchestral suite written to celebrate the centennial of the Hamburg Admiralty. “You can feel the ocean’s movements, mythological deities sleeping, in love, joking, angry and, then, finally, the happy sailors at the Hamburg port. It celebrates the importance of the sea, the port, and how both provided prosperity and livelihood for the city.” Handel’s Water Music was written to be performed on water. Commissioned by King George I for a royal jaunt on the River Thames in 1717, Handel conducted 50 musicians on a barge. ight regions’ all-time asking price highs are the major driving force behind a new record high for New Zealand’s average asking house price. “Auckland is not one of those regions, but has its own story to tell,” says realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. Real-time statistics from the country’s largest property listing site show the national property asking price in January 2019 climbed 3.3 per cent on the previous month to $695,116 - the highest on record. Taylor says when realestate. co.nz started collecting data 12 years ago (January 2007) the average national asking price for a property was $410,666. “Since then, the continuous increases in the national asking prices have largely been led by the Auckland region, but this month it was a diverse mix of eight other regions which took the limelight,” she says. “These eight regions paint an interesting picture. Typically, they have experienced a fall in new listings, and have low overall stock levels, which has helped vendors command handsome prices for their properties. “The eight regions that experienced all-time high asking prices in January were Waikato, Gisborne, Wellington, Nelson and Bays, Otago, Southland, Central Northland and Manawatu/Wanganui.” Nationally, there was a 2.5 per cent fall in the total number of houses for sale in January compared with January 2018. The total number of houses for sale across New Zealand in January was 24,878. Despite this fall in houses for sale across the country, property seekers were still heavily interested in the market, with realestate.co.nz registering 1,126,076 unique users who were browsing for property in January. “The Kiwi passion for property is alive and kicking,” says Taylor. The Auckland region also has its own unique story to tell and is tending to favour those who are buying. While total housing stock

This was the toughest match of the season and with the Howick lads in second place on the table behind Suburbs, they are real title contenders. he Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier Men resumed playing in the Hedley Howarth Two Day Major Championship and had the pleasure of meeting Cornwall for the third time this season. Skipper Walsh lost the toss and the local XI were invited to bat. Usually this is a good thing because the wickets play so well but this time there was more than a little green on the surface. The Cornwall bowlers were accurate and kept the pressure on all day and restricted the normally free flowing top order as wickets fell at about 20 run intervals. Dan Young produced a controlled innings to score 59 with Brian Barnard 32 and Dale Phillips 39 in support. After 63 overs, the Alpacas were dismissed for 204. However the local lads came out to determined to make up for their batting display and Matt McEwan soon had the openers back in the pavilion with the score standing at 25. After that Cornwall’s batsmen struggled to establish any partnerships and wickets fell about every 10 runs in face of unrelenting pressure from the home sides bowlers. TEACHING STYLE:
Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

The Botany Downs Secondary College student just won the coveted Tanner Cup and joins the ranks of illustrious Kiwi sailors Chris Dickson, Russell Coutts, Dean Barker and Jo Aleh who were previous winners of the same trophy. Host, Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club in Wellington, reported that day two of the regatta was in stark contrast to day one, with a light southerly (under 10 knots) filtering down Evans Bay. “It provided a steady breeze and flat water for the final battle to be carried out. “Race four (the first on day two) saw a real shake up of results with the top two from day one having absolute shockers.
