urswood company Akarana Timbers and its sister and parent companies have raised more than $35,000 at its Brave the Shave fundraiser on Daffodil Day on Friday. Akarana Timbers and associated companies and colleagues raised more than $13,900 which was matched by parent company United Industries (UIL)for a total $27,818.56. The amount was bolstered by other contributions amounting to more than $7100. A number of staff members stepped forward to have their heads shaved for the cause. Today at 11am the company will hand over a cheque to Cancer Society team at UIL office. Ben Hammond, group Health and Safety manager at UIL, said the funds raised will boost the Cancer Society’s work that is helping to lift the cancer survival rate for Kiwis. “The group has companies of various sizes from Whangarei all the way to Cromwell,” said Hammond. “Across the country we had over 30 staff shaving their heads with 10 here at Akarana. Our UIL receptionist Leah did a skydive, a cancer society fundraising promotion called Jump for Cancer. “There are six staff at Reofab and Metalcraft Christchurch who shaved their heads on Friday and another group at Metal Line North Shore and Metalcraft Whangarei also.

Pip and daughter Bo Burns and a talented volunteer group of locals are driving the 65th Howick Santa Parade this year. “They are taking over the reins from the clever and dedicated Emma Smith from Times Newspapers,” said Bo. “This year the parade is not coinciding with the Howick Club Christmas event, or the Auckland Santa Parade.” Bo is forecasting the biggest spectator numbers yet at the parade. In 1953, the first Santa Parade saw Santa walking down from the top of Stockade Hill with one bucket full of Macintosh lollies, nothing really compared to the 200kg that will be given out this year to the excited

NCEA Level 1: will they dump it or not? ■■By Farida Master
“We suddenly don’t know what NCEA Level 1 will look like,” Iva Ropati, Principal Howick College.

he opinion is divided. While most principals of local schools agree that the current assessment for the first level of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) adds to high levels of anxiety and stress for students and teachers, there are some school heads keen to entirely scrap the level 1 exams. Another group of principals prefer a status quo, while others want to increase the number of assessments. “It’s very uncertain and a bit unsettling,” says Iva Ropati, principal of Howick College. He has just returned from Wellington where a group of principals took strong objection to not being consulted in the NCEA Level 1 review process undertaken by the Ministry of Education. “We suddenly don’t know what NCEA Level 1 will look like and are having conversations about the future. But it is also very exciting as there is a possibility of something good coming out of it,” he says, focusing on the positive. However in the wake of Macleans College dumping Level 1 and more colleges following suit, Mr Ropati says he won’t be making any drastic decisions. “We won’t be jumping into it so quickly but will be reviewing our junior college curriculum. There will be no big changes but we will be exploring the possibility of a rich, relevant, meaningful and specialised curriculum for Years 9 and 10 so that there is a smooth transition. Right now we are considering different approaches to delivering an integrated crosscurriculum.” He says that the biggest barrier is over-assessment of young people who are under a lot of pressure. “It is undoubtedly heavy and burdensome on the teaching staff

with so many assessments. The relentless assessment is linked to negative student wellbeing. Teachers and students are being overworked and driven to the ground,” he says. Mr Ropati believes learning shouldn’t be driven by assessment alone but should be “rich and deep” so that it can help young people to apply the knowledge they have learnt for life. “Right now we will maintain a status quo till the consultation process ends and wait for the feedback from other principals, teachers, students and the review team. We have to move away from one size fits all and that is probably the biggest challenge,” he says.

“We will be teaching 21st century life skills like resilience at College,” Michael Williams, Principal Pakuranga College.
Pakuranga College principal Michael Williams says that while some schools have announced too quickly that they are not doing NCEA Level 1 at all, and some are working towards it, Pakuranga College is focussing on how to integrate the curriculum, learning habits of 21st century skills that include communication skills, how to analyse, organise, problem solving skills, goal setting and working together as a team. “As a school we are not going to make any changes to the NCEA Level 1 as it’s officially the first step on the ladder of success— teenagers at that stage of social development need to strive to achieve. It’s a critical plank,” he says. “While over-assessment is a problem, we have to find a way to assess smarter by looking at a bigger piece of work - looking for overlaps in the curriculum.” Mr Williams, the president of the Secondary Principals Association of New Zealand, acknowledges that the world is a lot more stressful than it used to be and that the college will make a conscious effort to teach skills like resilience. “At one time we took it for granted that the students learnt to be resilient along the way but now we will be teaching problem-solving skills and resilience. Resilience is stress with support. Taking away exams will not make life less stressful.” he says. “Currently a big, wide-reaching review by the Minister of Education, Chris Hipkins, is being held. From the principals’ perspective, the earlier review was poorly managed. There are some disgruntled principals but Mr Hipkins responded well at a recent national summit attended by 150 principals who will be putting in their submissions. “The Minister, as well as the Secretary of Education, and other officials were there, and they were all listening and collating information. The Minister has extended the consultation timeframe from September to later and a new professional advisory group with a good representation from principals is going to be set up,” he says.

The ladies in red hats and purple attire with lots of bling and feathers, merrily sang, danced, showed off their talent and had a lot of fun at the Talent Quest hosted by the Red Hat Society. Organised by Queen Christine from the Precious Pukekos of Howick and Queen Wikibeek from the Crimson Kiwis from Thames, Red Hatters from 17 chapters all over New Zealand attended the
event. Ladies get ready to misbehave, the co-host told a gathering of more than 150 women who cheered the performances that included, Botany Babes are Dreaming, Such Fun with Precious Pukekoes and Harry and the Boy by Vintage Violets. The Red Hat Society is an international social organisation founded in the US for women over 50 to reconnect with old friends or make new ones - but is now open to women of all ages. The idea behind it is to greet middle age with style and humour. “Our motto is ‘Adventure before
Dementia’ and today we’ve had ladies come from as far away as Tauranga to Te Awamutu and New Plymouth,” says Queen Christine. Power-packed performances at annual Koanga Spring Festival H
undreds of parents, grandparents, school principals, teachers, aunts, uncles and siblings at Farm Cove Intermediate School, have celebrated another successful year of the Koanga Spring Festival. The celebration of local schools’ kapa haka groups has run for 27 years and this year students from 27 schools put up power-packed performances at Farm Cove Intermediate on Friday. The performances were held at both the school gymnasium and hall to accommodate the steady stream of spectators. Farm Cove Intermediate performed waiata (song) at a powhiri (welcoming ceremony), opening the Koanga Spring Festival 2018. Months of hard work and training unfolded as primary and intermediate schools as well as secondary colleges performed the waiata, and kapa haka groups accompanied by guitarists won the audiences over with their enchanting performances. The koha received goes back into the community supporting Owairoa ‘Garden of Memories’ and Matariki Marae. Koanga means spring time and the festival truly celebrated the turn of seasons with a range of captivating Maori cultural performances. he official opening of the youth worker rooms at Pakuranga College was a truly moving moment for Mike Turinsky, chief executive officer of Young Life Trust and Howick Local Board member. Acknowledging the gathering at the college on Friday, he said it was a milestone. Among those present were minsters, pastors, acting principal of Pakuranga College Billy Merchant, former principal Pam Stone, Board of Trustees of the School, Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, Councillor Sharon Stewart, Howick Local Board members David Collings, Jim Donald, Adele White, Katrina Bungard and special guest Mayor Phil Goff. Television personality Geoff Thomas and other school principals were also present. Talking about the community partnership that started with the College in 1998, Mr Turinsky said it is an incredible legacy by former principal of 17 years, Pam Stone. “While the dedicated youth worker rooms are located in Wairoa House, an old schoolhouse from the turn of the century, it is the people within this space that make it magical,” he said. Pakuranga youth workers do their part to contribute to the collective effort of helping young people reach their potential and successfully navigate their school years to become positive contributors to the community. “The youth workers help connect students to the many opportunities, support and services available at the school. They also offer opportunities for youth to gain life skills, relationship and leadership skills and confidence to increase their resilience,” said Mr Turinsky, a passionate youth worker himself. The cheerful Waiora rooms are a space dedicated for the youth work team to run mentoring sessions with students, facilitate group life skills and self-worth programmes, while providing a safe space for students to retreat as a welcoming place to hang out during lunch break. There are currently four paid youth workers at Pakuranga College, led by team leader Carmel Bell. After the formal mihi whakatau (official welcome speech in Maori), Mr Goff declared the

Designation approved for next stage of AMETI F
aster, safer and more reliable public transport for east Aucklanders is a step closer today. Designation has been approved for the next stage of AMETI Eastern Busway between Panmure and Pakuranga, which means the land required for the project has the approvals to proceed. The announcement comes after more than three years of detailed public consultation and a Notice of Requirement process that culminated in a hearing late last year. Mayor Phil Goff says the AMETI Eastern Busway will bring high frequency public transport to the fastgrowing region of east Auckland. He says it will also offer significantly improved facilities for motorists and safer, faster connections for cyclists. “New dedicated busways and cycleways will vastly improve travel times in the area, unlocking housing development opportunities in Panmure and beyond, and giving the local economy a serious boost,” he says. “AMETI is a priority project that will better connect one of Auckland’s fastest growing areas with our transport network in which we are investing $28 billion over the coming 10 years.” In June, Auckland Council approved the resource consent and recommended approval of the Notice of Requirement for the Panmure to Pakuranga stage of the project. stage of the $1.4 billion AMETI Eastern Busway project will begin later this year and involves construction of a dedicated, congestion free busway along Lagoon Drive and Pakuranga Road. There will be new cycling and walking connections, improvements to major intersections, urban design and landscaping enhancements, a new bridge across Tamaki River and the creation of a new memorial park and improved public spaces. Duncan Humphrey, AT programme director for AMETI Eastern Busway says this announcement gives certainty about what the future of transport looks like for east Auckland. “This means that the residents, property owners, business owners and community organisations know what will be happening in their area and they can plan for their futures with certainty about the transport options they will have,” he says.
The project is separated into various stages, including Panmure to Pakuranga, Pakuranga to Botany, Pakuranga Town Centre and Reeves Road Flyover and a new interchange at Botany Town Centre. Construction work on the next stage between Panmure and Pakuranga will start later this year. Public consultation is currently underway for the Pakuranga to Botany stage. This stage includes the continuation of the busway along the centre of Ti Rakau Drive, development of a flyover to provide better travel options for motorists between Pakuranga Road and Pakuranga Highway, cycling and walking networks, a new station in Pakuranga Town Centre and a future interchange near Botany Town Centre. ugust 2018 has been a month of record highs and record lows since realestate.co.nz started collecting data more than 11 years ago, says realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. Real-time statistics from realestate.co.nz show nearly two thirds (11) of the country’s 19 regions hit record high average asking prices in August, while half of the regions (9) registered all-time lows in the number of houses listed for sale. “Added into the mix is a healthy number of unique browsers in August to realestate.co.nz, which hints at an early spring lift in housing activity,” says Taylor. In August, 911,012 unique browsers visited the site, which is a 5.2 per cent increase on July and consistent with summertime browsing levels. “We’ve had a relatively static housing market since the election period and this lift in interest coincides with a healthy injection of new listings in two of the coun-

Of the 8739 new property listings across the country during August, almost half (4343) were located in either the Auckland or Canterbury regions. ➤➤Record increases in asking prices highs in 11 regions The increase in property asking prices was led by the Central Otago/Lakes District which tipped over the one-million-dollar milestone, with the average asking price sitting at $1,019,094. “This is the first region to ever reach the $1 million asking price milestone in the 11 years of data collection history on realestate. co.nz,” says Taylor. “Whether Central Otago-Lakes continues to outstrip Auckland as the most expensive region in terms of asking prices remains to be seen. “It’s a smaller market and if there are a significant number of top-end properties coming onto the market at the same time, it can impact the average asking prices.
“Auckland is larger, with a more diverse range of properties, so it’s not always comparing apples with apples,” she says. While Central Otago-Lakes led the charge with a significant lift in asking prices, there were 10 other regions which recorded record highs in asking prices last month. These regions registered more modest gains and were equally balanced across the North and South Islands. “Spring appears to have come early for the Auckland and Canterbury regions,” says Taylor. “Canterbury has been an active market for some months, but it seems that the Auckland region has now sprung back to life with a surge of new listings,” says Vanessa. Of the 8739 new property listings across the country during August, almost half (4343) were located in either the Auckland or Canterbury regions. The Auckland region registered a 6 per cent increase in new listings compared with August 2017.

W
hen you measure a sportsman by his character and loyalty to his club, 300-game NZ Warrior Simon Mannering sits high up the totem pole of whatever team sport you want to name. The dream of Warriors fans is to farewell the humble 33-year-old with an NRL crown that has eluded them since the team’s 1995 debut. But he would be the first to caution about keeping their heads out of the clouds. Interestingly, while fans debate whether Stacey Jones or Mannering is the greatest Warrior ever, they are very different. Stocky halfback Jones had attacking class - the acceleration, dummy, sidestep and swerve that makes Sean Johnson so special on his better days. The rangy Mannering lacks those special gifts but more than compensates with his consistency, huge work rate, toughness and magnificent defence. Throughout his career he has been the heart and soul of a team that failed to reach his high standards. However this year there have been some promising changes, a better pattern, a stauncher defence, a growing self-belief. With eight NRL playoff teams finishing within two championship points of one another, this year’s competition has been particularly tight.

he Auckland Premier Men’s cricket season kicks off on October 20, a couple of weeks later than last year. The late start negates the use of artificial wickets which allowed play to get underway in changeable spring weather, but were not seen as ideal for premier grade cricket. I caught up with Bill Walsh who will be captaining the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club’s premier side The Alpacas again this year, and asked him what he views as the strategy to retaining the two-day competition prize, the Hedley Howarth trophy. “The key to our success last year was the ability of everyone to contribute under pressure at some point during the course of the season to win games. We’ll be looking for more of the same this year”. The boys from the east enjoyed a stellar season in 2017/18.
