t 87, Joan Rutherford is on her toes eight hours a day. Its 10am at the newly-refurbished family jewellery store Timmermans at Botany Town Centre and Joan, with her eye for detail, meticulously checks that the jewellery is displayed at the right angle; the counter is well polished and the window displays meet exacting international standards. Even as she is giving precise instructions to a new recruit about different designer watch brands, she bends down to pick up a tiny piece of plastic that her keen eye has spotted on the floor. It’s not often that you meet an octogenarian who has devoted 50 years of her life to a family-run business and is so passionate about it. Hardly surprising then that some customers have even mistaken her to be Mrs Timmermans considering her long standing presence at the store. After a while, the staff stopped explaining that she has been around every since store owner Stephen Timmermans was a little boy and she’d take him out for ice cream just so that his dad Mr T, could

Joan says that the best part of her job is her involvement in people’s lives on both happy and sad occasions. “Whether clients come in for designing new jewellery, repairs or service work, there is always a story behind it,” she says. “We are there with them on their special occasion be it weddings, engagements, birthdays and then there are sad moments when someone has lost a family member... a father has lost his son and wants us to encapsulate their memory in a ring or a locket; or then they want you to repair

their dad’s timeless watch. “There is such a sense of pride in creating things that are precious to them. “In what other industry can you work, where things that are priceless get passed on for hundreds of years?” Joan, who lives in an apartment at the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village, says she sells jewellery even when she is not working at the store. “I sold a diamond bangle to a 90-year-old at the village. She said she always wanted to own one before she died,” says Joan. Stephen says he still takes her along to every business meeting.

“She is so sharp and knowledgeable and has always been the caring matriarch of the Timmermans family,” says the seventh generation jeweller and watchmaker. “So many former employees still come to visit Joan at the shop. She is a confidante to many. “Both our families have been integrated over the years.

When someone has been in your life for that long, you share mutual love and respect.” Ask Joan about retirement and she says she will continue working till one day “she pops it. “Who would employ an 87-year-old,” she laughs. To which Stephen’s prompt response is “They would be foolish not to.”

Counties Manukau Police are investigating a serious aggravated robbery which occurred in Reeves Road Pakuranga at around 11.20pm on Sunday night. Police were called following a report of two people being approached by another group on Reeves Road, Pakuranga, and their car being taken. One person received injuries and was in Middlemore Hospital in a stable condition. Senior Sergeant Steve Meade told media that one of the victims was chased down the road and attacked with a hammer resulting in a head injury. Police are making enquiries to locate the vehicle and those responsible. From taking theatre to United States prisons to bringing it home ■■By Farida Master

he takes Shakespeare behind bars in USA. Former Howick resident Karen Burnett Hamer has been using theatre to work with prison inmates. It was Karen’s desire to change lives of the less fortunate that had her first approach the officials at the Colorado State Prison and get the nod to introduce Shakespeare to men and women who have committed crimes and been in trouble with the law. Karen’s proud dad John Burnett says that one of her pupils, a former convict, was offered full time employment in professional theatre, on his release from prison. Now after 18 years Karen has returned home from Dallas, Texas with a crew of American actors to host Pride and Prejudice the Musical from July 10-14 at the Playhouse Theatre Glen Eden. Featuring an American cast with supporting Auckland actors and filled with catchy songs and engaging humour, the entertaining adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel has entertained audiences both in USA and Bath England – and is now in its 10th anniversary. The musical will be performed for the first time in Auckland for six shows only. Interestingly, the successful play-

wright was invited twice to the Jane Austin Festival in Bath (birthplace of the English novelist) where they performed to full houses. John is equally proud of the fact that his daughter, a former Macleans College student, won a two-year scholarship to complete a Master of Studies at Cambridge University in England. And while commuting between the US and UK had its share of challenges for the mother-of-10, Karen managed to get her Masters in Applied Criminology and Management. Interestingly, Karen has homeschooled all of her 10 children that

includes twins and three adopted children from Ethiopia. “I don’t know how she manages to juggle all her responsibilities but she has a very supportive husband and wonderful friends who help her out,” says John, who volunteers at the blacksmith’s shop on Live Days at the Howick Historical Village. “In fact none of the cast is paid and yet they were happy to volunteer their time and spend their own money for their flights to New Zealand. “It speaks a lot of the relationship they share and how much they respect Karen for the work she does

as a founder and artistic director of Tin Roof Productions Monument, Colorado a non-profit organisation that produces community and children’s theatre.” And while American production designer and photographer Jana Bussanich arrived from the US a week earlier to work on the stage sets, Karen has just arrived with the crew and is excited about the vibrant new show they have been planning for the last two years. “Getting everyone’s dates and booking a theatre that early in Auckland was a bit of a challenge,” says Karen, who gives credit to her sister who has always been in

local theatre. Karen finds pure joy in using theatre as a tool for transformation to help prisoners who may never get out. “It helps them to dig deep into emotion and may even give them a spiritual impetus as they want to be something more than what they have done. “It becomes a lifeline and it’s heartening to see some of them try and memorise different lines,” says Karen who volunteered with the women’s prison in Mt Eden more than 20 years ago. “The joy of this partnership is beautiful.”

He’s a good guy. I feel lucky that he

I owe Tofik a big apology - I was a bit of a d*** to him when he was the Labour candidate. I was too wrapped up in the game, thought I was better than him, and I treated him appallingly. “Many of us did when we were in government. It was wrong and I have said sorry to him several times since. Back in January Tofik reached

Ratepayer advocate Gayleen Mackereth has been presented with the Dawn Johnston Koru Award, given in recognition of someone in the community who has overcome adversity, to live a life of serving others. She was recognised at the annual changeover of office bearers of the Howick Inner Wheel Club recently. While riding her bike some years ago, Gayleen was hit by a driver who ran a give way sign, resulting in multiple injuries, months in a spinal unit and consigned her to a wheelchair. “Not one to let her incapacity to get her down, Gayleen has demonstrated her resilience over the years, by sheer determination - whether it be chairperson of the Howick Ratepayers and Residents’ Association with involvement in research through the exhaustive Auckland Council plans and documents; meetings with council representatives and much correspondence with the Council regarding the long-term saga of Stockade Hill view-shaft,” says Adrienne Davies, immediate past-president of Howick Inner Wheel. Gayleen teaches a number of students on-line in French, German and Spanish and despite living with extreme pain, and battling tiredness, Gayleen puts on a brave face and never stops. She undertakes swimming and physio exercises, plus tall walker to help with the mobility of her upper body and is very appreciative of the constant help and assistance from her husband, Don. Dawn Johnston, a charter member of the Howick Inner Wheel Club, decided on this award after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and it was based on the International Inner Wheel theme for 2017/2018 ‘Leave a Legacy’. The inaugural presentation of this award was made last year to Alan Breslau of Half Moon Bay who survived a horrific plane crash many years ago, followed by many years in hospital and then a lifetime of encouraging and empowering others. Sadly Dawn lost her battle with cancer in May this year.

hile last week’s muchneeded heavy rain was welcomed by water utility company Watercare, the region’s dams are still well-short. The dams in the Hunua Ranges - and Waitakere Ranges on the opposite coast – are one of the three main water sources in Auckland (the other sources are an aquifer in Onehunga and the Waikato River). The exact proportion supplied from each source varies daily. Watercare says it depends on the levels in the storage lakes, forecast rainfall, treatment plant capacity, maintenance requirements and the cost of transmitting water to the treatment plant. Watercare is concerned with the lack of the usual rainfall so far this year. According to Niwa, the National Institute of Water and Atmos-

pheric Research, autumn rainfall totals were below normal (50-79 per cent of the autumn normal) with isolated pockets of well below normal. Meanwhile over the majority of summer, rainfall was well below normal (less than 50 per cent of the summer normal). In 2018, yearly rainfall was above normal (120-149 per cent of the annual normal). The dam level data shows levels have improved but the dams remain far from capacity in the lead up to spring and summer. Watercare’s Roseline Klein, head of water value, says, “Thursday’s heavy rainfall was useful because

it saw our total water storage increase from around 58 per cent to around 63 per cent. However, in order to bring the dam levels back up to a normal level, we would need normal rainfall for this time of year, plus a lot of extra rain to make up the deficit from January to June. “Therefore, we are still encouraging Aucklanders to use water wisely this winter. We are also carefully balancing Auckland’s water supply, drawing more water from our river and underground aquifers sources than normal to reduce demand on our dams while the dry weather continues through winter.”

Pigeon Mountain wetland restoration planting Attention all tree lovers and volunteers. There is going to be a big tree planting drive in the wetland area on the western side of Pigeon Mountain Road (opposite the maunga carpark). The Tupuna Maunga Authority is calling for volunteers for the Ohuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain wetland restoration planting days, scheduled for July and August. The plan is to plant a diverse mix of up to 30,000 native grasses, shrubs and tree species which will help to encourage the native fauna and flora return to an area they once occupied and thrived in. This planting is part of the wider

native vegetation programme which seeks to enhance the mauri (energy) and wairua (spirit) of Ohuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain and adjoining environmental systems and to restore a functional and healthy ecosystem with strong biodiversity values. There will be two community volunteer weekend plantings days and two planting days for local schools. ➤➤Community days are Saturday, July 27 and Saturday, August 3, 10am to 1pm ➤➤School planting days are Friday, August 23 and Wednesday, August 28, 9.30am to 11.30am and 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

anta is set to sleigh through Howick again after the local board granted the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust $30,000 for the village’s annual Christmas parade. The money will help meet the overall costs, including traffic management, a website, set-up and pack-down costs, advertising, management and entertainment. Pakuranga Rotary was also awarded $30,000, towards the cost of a community fireworks display and festival, while the New Hope Community Church Trust was allocated $25,000 towards delivering its Christmas event. emarkably, the sky cleared and the wind dropped for the Rotary Club of Pohutukawa Coast’s Mid Winter Plunge held recently. The event is a longstanding one, held at Maraetai Beach that raises funds for the community. It’s a highlight of winter on the coast. Participants were requested to take a concrete pill and come dressed for the occasion. This year around 30 brave souls commit-

ted themselves to the swim and a few did the more sedate plunge around the Coastguard vessel. The Rotary Club of Pohutukawa Coast has supported local charities and local community events for many years. Rotary is a worldwide secular organisation that demands high ethical standards and promotes humanitarian efforts and goodwill throughout the world.

he Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) is calling for clearer guidelines from MBIE Tenancy Services as confusion continues to arise around the obligations in relation to the condition a property must be left in when ending a tenancy. For example, as to whether tenants need to clean items such as the carpet or the oven before departing a tenancy, whether picture hooks need to be removed and the timeframes in which the cleaning needs to be undertaken once the tenancy has ended. Under the legislation, tenants are required to leave a property “reasonably clean and tidy” however, this does not mean being cleaned to professional standards. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “Where the confusion arises is the difference between what a landlord or property manager determines to be reasonable and what a tenant believes is reasonable – and these two views naturally tend to differ in around 90 per cent of cases. “From a landlord’s perspective, if they’ve paid for professional cleaners to clean their investment property between tenants,

when the new tenant leaves, they expect and assume that the property will be left in the same condition. “It’s also about the timeframe in which the cleaning needs to be undertaken, as this can be compounded when the next tenant is due to move in and there is still cleaning to be done.” In Australia, the rules are more specific than they are in New Zealand and stipulate, for example, that when a tenant leaves a property that the property needs to be professionally cleaned and that receipts are required as proof. They also stipulate that picture hooks need to be removed from walls and the holes are filled in. “Unlike in Australia, where the rules are much more prescriptive, there is no yard stick in New Zealand as to what actually constitutes being reasonably clean and tidy. If landlords/property managers and tenants had an actual check list, then everyone would know exactly where they stand,” says Norwell. “If we had a more specific regime in New Zealand we wouldn’t end up in these situations where people’s views differ

so significantly. Additionally, it would also be of significant benefit to the Tenancy Tribunal which is currently clogged with cases about cleaning. Where confusion also occurs is that some property managers, in many cases those who don’t belong to an industry body, insert clauses into contracts to include professional cleaning, but then this gets thrown out when the case reaches the Tenancy Tribunal. “Currently you can’t insert a clause into a contract that goes above and beyond the law, but as the industry isn’t regulated some property managers do this to appease their clients (landlords), but this can ultimately create further problems down the track. “Right now, all we can do is recommend that property managers educate their clients as to the requirements of the law, but also explain to tenants up-front that the landlord really does expect the property to be cleaned to a high level when they leave the property. However, clearer guidelines to reduce the subjectivity would go a long way to resolving this issue.”

Labours motor vehicle tax will drive you mad The number of taxes this Government is heaping onto Kiwis flies in the face of its claim to be the most kind and caring Government yet. When you add up all of the new taxes, and take into consideration the cancelled tax relief, Kiwi families are looking at $7000 out of their pockets over four years. That does nothing to increase the wellbeing of an average family. The Government has increased fuel taxes three times since it came into power, it’s added on a regional fuel tax in Auckland, introduced ring fencing of losses on rental properties, introduced the Amazon Tax, GST on overseas roaming, extended the bright-line test and increased Worksafe levies. All this, and the Government cancelled the previous National Government’s planned tax cuts, which would have removed some of the burden Kiwis are now facing, and meant they had a bit more in their wallets at the end of the week. Now Labour is introducing another new tax – the motor vehicle tax. People who purchase cars which the Government deems to emit too much carbon will be forced to pay thousands of dollars in tax to subsidise people who purchase

electric vehicles. For example, the Mazda CX-5 will jump by $1500 while the Hyundai Tucson will be an extra $2000 under the Government’s proposal. The consequence of this could be some people hanging onto older, less safe vehicles for longer than they should. This policy will also penalise those New Zealanders who are already being penalised by the increased fuel taxes. Yes we need to reduce the effect that cars have on the environment, but slapping big fat taxes onto motor vehicle owners isn’t going to solve the problem. Some people have no choice but to purchase particular types of vehicles, such as trades people or farmers. This tax will only increase the cost of living and make it harder for some people to do business and earn a dollar. It is a tax which will drive you mad.

Brownlee: ‘Growing angst about policies’ W

ith elections looming next year, more influential politicians have been making the rounds familiarising people about the opposition’s policies. Visiting last week was Gerry Brownlee, former Leader of the House and a senior Government minister, who dropped into the Times office after an early morning business breakfast meeting arranged by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown.

Brownlee spoke about various issues from “disruption in education, no targets for elective surgery to 16,000 new state houses — none of which were committed by the current government. “They have not put any new housing areas in place, which is quite a worry,” he said. “Everything they are doing now has been started last year by the National Party. “There is a Prime Minister who is popular but the Government is fail-

ing on several points and if you take away the gloss it is not a very tidy picture. “There is a growing angst about policies and while it is good to be talking about caring and kindness, we can’t let the spin of an attractive message blind people on to it.” Asked about leadership rumblings between Simon Bridges and Judith Collins, the MP for Ilam said “we are a united caucus — all 55 of us”.

aving suffered hamstring problems soon after making the All Blacks’ 39-man squad, Sonny Bill Williams is skating on thin ice. Injuries have plagued the 33-yearold since rupturing his Achilles at the 2016 Olympics but national selectors Steve Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox have retained their faith in him at the expense of others who have shown consistent form. Hansen is a great believer in experience and with Ma’a Nonu having failed to make the squad and Ryan Crotty out for eight weeks with a hand injury, Williams is his most experienced midfield back. Unfortunately, given his history over the past four years, he could be a liability rather than an asset. Other midfielders in the squad include Anton Lienert-Brown, Ngani Laumape and Jack Goodhue while Braydon Ennor can play centre as well as wing and versatile Jodie Barrett can play 12, 13, 14 and 15. Of the regular midfielders LienertBrown has the best off-load and the powerful Laumape is the most prolific try-scorer. hree talented young sailors have been selected to represent their sailing clubs at Blake Inspire for Sailors, a six-day environmental leadership development adventure developed by Blake (formerly the Sir Peter Blake Trust) and Yachting New Zealand. They are Cameron Evans (Year 11) Howick Sailing Club; Luke Townend (Year 11) Bucklands Beach Yacht Club and Sean Hancock (Year 11) Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. The programme will run from July 7 to July 12 in Auckland where 30 teenaged sailors from yacht clubs across New Zealand will gather to learn about environmental issues facing New Zealand and the impacts they have on our marine and coastal environments.
