ears of joy and blessings,’ is how Howick Local Board chair David Collings described the unpredictable weather that played hide and seek as it lashed with rain and cold winds at the dawn blessings as well as the official opening of the Sir John Walker Promenade at Barry Curtis Park on Thursday morning. Olympian Walker accompanied by wife Helen and fellow counsellors Paul Young and Daniel Newman (ManurewaPapakura ward councillor), cut the ribbon after the karakia and blessing ceremony. Also there in a show of support were Howick Local Board members Adele White, John Spiller, Peter Young and Mike Turinsky accompanied by his dad visiting from Alaska. As Mr Walker officially declared the 8k promenade open, Collings reminded him of the time he had the honour to run with the Olympian at the opening of the worldclass athletic facility at Lloyd Elsmore Park, to which the champion light-heartedly responded saying, “And you are still catching up!” Also at the event was one

very enthusiastic fan of the Olympian. Half Moon Bay resident Karl Bissett, 44, brought along a scrapbook with pictures of New Zealand sports stars and Olympians. In it was a picture of Walker at the 1984 Olympics. Bissett said he’d read the announcement of the opening of the promenade in the Times and grabbed the opportunity to meet his hero. He asked Walker for his autograph. “You’ve been a great inspiration to me and it was because of you and Olympian Dick Quax that my brother and I took up athletics. We ran for the Waitemata Board,” he said. “I was 11 when I made this scrapbook at school and I’m 44 now but I could never bring myself to throw it out,” Bissett said. “I’m really rather proud to have Sir John’s signature.” Bissett proudly pointed out to his teacher’s comment and the fact that he had got 10 on 10, a gold star for the winning school project. To which Walker responded saying, “We both won gold.” The promenade will be fully lit for evening use, and also shares a boundary with Ormiston Town Centre which is currently under development, creating a walking and cycling connection with the development. It forms the park boundary and acts as a barrier to keep vehicles out of the park— doing away with the need for bollards. It offers users an access at several entry points. The entries will take people to a range of facilities from playgrounds, sports fields, toilets, a skate park, community buildings, natural areas, event spaces, cross-country running and a range of informal recreation and reflective spaces.

Forex trader denies $7m fraud A Half Moon Bay foreign exchange trader has pleaded not guilty to running a Ponzi scheme to defraud his clients of more than $7 million. Kelvin Clive Wood (69) pleaded not guilty at the Auckland District Court last Thursday to representative charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and ‘Theft by person in a special relationship’ brought by the Serious Fraud Office.
The SFO alleges that Wood created a Ponzi scheme after his foreign exchange brokerage began to suffer net trading losses. He allegedly used new investors’ funds to pay other investors their reported gains or to refund principal investment without the permission or knowledge of investors. tors is believed to have been lost by the defendant over an eightyear period. Mr Wood has been remanded on bail for a case review hearing at the Auckland District Court on March 20. The Financial Markets Authority referred the case to the SFO to investigate in May 2017. Wood’s address is listed as Takutai Avenue on the NZ Companies Office register.

olice have arrested a male following the death of a 34-yearold female in Flat Bush on Monday night. Shortly after 10pm, police were called to an address following reports that a female was attacked. When police arrived at the scene, the woman was found unconscious with a number of serious wounds. The victim was transported to Middlemore Hospital but died from her injuries. While police were at the scene, a male contacted police alleging he was the offender. He was located by police in Botany and taken to the Manukau Police station. Detective Inspector Tofilau Faa Va’aelua says the alleged offender was known to the victim and says police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this death. “Police are continuing to investigate the incident and a scene examination continues today,” he said on Tuesday. A post-mortem examination also take place on Tuesday. “Police are not in a position to confirm the name of the deceased until next-of-kin have been notified,” he said. “We also encourage anyone who witnessed this incident or has any

Run, Santa run I
n a sea of cheerful red, around 150 Santas young and old participated in the Great New Zealand Santa Run at the Barry Curtis Park on Thursday evening at 6.30pm. The Great NZ Santa Run is a 2-3km fun run/walk that had 2500 Santas participate nationwide, over two days. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the community and family focused event, where kids and parents are encouraged to run through their local town, displaying a festive spirit. To mark their anniversary, this year the Great Santa Run partnered with the Graeme Dingle Foundation. The foundation is a leader in positive child and youth development building resilience and self belief in young people. Their proven programmes include Kiwi Can, Stars, Career Navigator, Project K and MYND. Participants over 13 years of age received a Santa suit as part of their entry fee, while younger kids receive a free Santa hat. There were lots of spot prizes were up for grabs. Jenny Stiles, CEO of the Graeme Dingle Foundation, says the Great NZ Santa Run is not only a funfilled way to bring the community together but all those who participate will help our young
people build inner strength to set them on the right path to achieve their goals. “We’re thrilled to have been selected as this year’s recipient charity. “In a world where not all childhoods are created equal, it’s important we do what we can to ensure all young kiwis have a platform to reach their full potential. here are few words to describe the utter devastation and heartbreak so many of us are feeling this week. The horrifying end to the Grace Millane investigation is weighing heavily on the hearts and minds of every New Zealander. And I think it’s safe to say that Grace’s death has reminded us why being a woman, even in New Zealand, is terrifying. As someone in my early 20s, I – and so many people I know – am walking the same path as Grace, graduating from university, travelling, meeting new people and determined to create as many memories as I can. And we all deserve to come home safely. Instead, on the eve of her 22nd birthday, on the trip of a lifetime with her whole life ahead of her, Grace went on a night out from which she would never return. As I’m writing this, it was reported that Grace met her (alleged) murderer via a dating app. It’s hard to describe the sadness that comes with knowing that some people will, perhaps without even realising it, use this information as a way to understand why this happened to her. They will say things like; ‘if only she hadn’t gone off alone with someone she had just met... if only she hadn’t chosen to travel alone’. What people should be asking is, ‘Why did this 26-year-old man think it was okay to act violently towards her?’ or ‘Why did he think he had any right to take away her life?’. Grace had every right to do whatever she wanted to do with whomever she wanted to do it with, and walk away safely with nothing but incredible memories of her time here in Auckland city. Women who travel alone or go on dates with people they’ve never met are not the problem. Men who commit violent acts against women are. Lizzie Marvelly wrote in a blog post on www.villainesse.com on Monday morning, “When young women are slaughtered, it reminds women that our safety is an illusion. “I won’t speculate on the details of Grace’s death, but how many of us
have travelled alone? How many of us have gone out on dates with people we don’t know? How many of us have dared to go out into the world and seize life?” Lizzie warned that people would turn Grace into a cautionary tale. I, along with so many other girls, have grown up being cautioned. Don’t walk home alone, don’t get into a taxi alone, don’t trust people you have only just met, always keep a close eye on your drink, let someone know where you are at all times, don’t go anywhere without your phone. These things and more have become our collective, subconscious checklist. Over the last few days I have read stories from other women who park their cars beneath a light in the car park so they don’t have to walk back to their car in the dark. Women, who without realising it lock their doors when they are sitting in their parked car on a dark street. Women who have pulled their hoodie over their heads in an attempt to hide the fact that they are a female walking alone. Women who wait until they see their friend walk into their home before they drive away. Women whose goodbyes are followed with a ‘text me when you get home safe’. Making decisions based on the anticipation of something awful happening to you or your friends is a heavy burden to bear. When will people start realising that raising women to avoid becoming a victim of death or violence is not the answer. Next time you go to tell your daughter to change her outfit to something ‘less revealing’ before a night out, instead sit your son down and remind him how to protect and care for the women he encounters. Instead of reminding your female friend not to walk home alone, remind your male friend to make sure any girl he is with, even those he has just met, gets home safely. Women should not have to walk around our country in fear. As a country we need to do better. Rest in Peace Grace Millane. I am so sorry.

hey may be small in number but when it comes to organising events, the Rotary Club of Highbrook have always given it all they have to reach the winning post. They are currently working on the 2019 Waipuna Conference Suites Fun Run Walk to be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Highbrook Park. Rotary Club of Highbrook has been organising and managing the Fun Run Walk for the last five years which has attracted over 2500 participants and raised over $120,000 that has been presented to local charities that support the local community. The event is promoted through businesses in east and south Auckland communities, encouraging participation for a good cause, while creating an environment focussed on fun, fitness and social interaction with one another. In 2018, the main beneficiary from the Fun Run Walk was Middlemore Foundation. A donation of $16,500 was made to the
foundation for the purchase of a much needed ‘AudioStar Pro’ for the Audiology Department at the Manukau Super Clinic. Nelson Balisa, Charge Audiologist at Manukau Super Clinic explains that the machine is a diagnostic audiometer which is capable of testing infants’ ears from as young as nine-monthsold. It is used for different types of hearings tests. The AudioStar Pro has been in use since August this year and Nelson says that the equipment has made their clinic much more flexible and efficient. As a result, the Audiology Department is now able to see more patients and children with more specialist type hearing needs. In the past with the standard audiometer, the audiologists could only test children’s ears from four years and above. The new equipment additionally provides the audiologists with more confidence in the results, especially when dealing with a patient who has or is facing permanent
hearing loss. “The AudioStar Pro will continue to make a significant difference to the clinic through its flexibility, ease of use and enabling a considerable more number of at high-risk patients to be tested,” he says. The Rotary Club of Highbrook is now looking forward to supporting Middlemore Foundation and helping them with replacing an Ultrasound Machine for Kids First Maternity Assessment Unit. The machine has recently broken down and cannot be repaired. The Fun Run Walk supports other local charities too, and last year this included Pillars, MAC centre, Flat Bush Primary School and Make-A-Wish NZ. ➤➤You can help: By participating in the event which includes a 1k and 5k walk and 5k and 10k run or as a volunteer on the day. dventurer MP Andrew Bayly will swap the North Pole for the desert and 22 days on a camel when he faces his next extreme challenge. In 2016 Bayly and eldest son James trekked 120km across the ice to the North Pole. This summer he and second son Daniel plan to follow in the footsteps of World War I hero Lawrence of Arabia and trek on camels for 22 days through the deserts of Jordan. They will travel part of the route that Colonel TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and members of the United Arab tribes followed when they made their epic journey to capture the port of Aqaba from Turkish forces in 1917. Lawrence was a British military officer who played a major role in the Great Arab Revolt and later wrote the memoir The Seven Pillars of Wisdom. His story was the inspiration for the movie Lawrence of Arabia starring Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif. “I promised to do a trip with each of my boys so now it’s Dan’s turn,” Bayly says. “It’s an unusual thing to do and it should be fun. It’ll be nice spending a month with Dan and doing something in a totally different context.”

It will certainly be a change from Parliament and, for Dan, life at Otago University, and both are keenly anticipating the challenge. They head to Jordan at the end of December and end their adventure in Petra in early February. They’ll be riding camels, dressing, eating and sleeping like Bedouins, and soaking up the history and spectacular scenery of the desert. They’ll also be relying on their wits – their only support will be another cameleer and a support person. They will be carrying their supplies on camel. Cellphone coverage will be non-existent, something Dan admits he might struggle with. “It’s a good adventure to get to do,” he says. “It means something and it’s challenging.” Bayly has been preparing for the trip for months – when his Parliamentary schedule allows – starting with reading about Lawrence’s exploits and including a punishing fitness regime to develop the muscles he’ll need when riding a camel – using an unusual equestrian training platform at his local gym EquestriFit.

Calendar raising cash for mental health L
ocal ladies are stepping up to raise awareness and funds for mental health with a cheeky calendar. The Howick Hoo Hoops are a powerhooping movement to help raise awareness and help shift attitudes mental health problems throughout New Zealand. This Saturday they are hosting a public launch event for their calendars at The Howick Club on Saturday December 15, 7pm – 9pm. With the help of generous sponsors and volunteers, The Howick Hoo Hoops were able to create this calendar at no cost meaning every cent raised from the sale of the calendars will go to a Mental Health charity in New Zealand. In the calendar they have cel-
ebrated women, in a tasteful, slightly cheeky and quirky way. The calendar also has a collection of meaningful and inspiring messages inside. The Howick Hoo Hoops worked alongside the founder of Powerhoop NZ, Amy McAuley to bring the calendar to life. “Mental health is a topic very close to the heart. Having suffered from depression on and off for most of my 20s and 30s, battling and finally beating a pretty severe eating disorder, as well as Post Natal Depression, I know how important it is to have a lifeline to help you through these extremely dark times,” says Amy McAuley, author of the message inside the calendar.

ur day started bright and early - 6am with all the set-up preparations - with blue skies all over east Auckland. It was promising to be another successful Howick Santa Parade. The weather Gods did not let us down and it proved to be another hot, outstanding summers day! The energy levels were high, and the village was filling up from around 10am with Uxbridge and Moore Street activities, the lovely Santa Parade Xmas markets, and the amazing retailers opening for the hustle and bustle of the day. The town was literally painted red with balloons, flags, lollies, clowns, stilt walkers, fashion parades, magic shows... the list goes on! With a record 60 floats, the parade was a huge success, and the judges enjoyed engaging with everyone and seeing all the effort our local community put in. Santa said he hasn’t seen a crowd like this in a local parade for years, and he said it was 5 to 6 deep the whole way around, which was music to my ears, knowing that all the hard work my team and I put in paid off with our community turning up to support not only our efforts, but to get involved in the day! Even though the judges Adele White, John Russell and Richie Barnett said it was a tough decision, as everyone had made huge efforts, the final vote from the three independent judges were conclusive. First place went to Our Lady Star of the Sea, second was Cockle Bay Primary and third place went to Point View Girl Guides. Our Volunteer of the Year Cup went to Gina Grant for her continuous support, hard work and effort throughout the all the preparations and on the day! A big thank you to Times Newspapers for continuing to help engage with our community, promote and turn up to these iconic events. After being involved myself somehow with friends Emma Smith and her mum Reay Neben and her husband Brian for roughly 30 years, it was a pleasure, even though an exhausting pleasure running the parade myself. I will hold my head high and be proud of being able to take over the reins from them with their guidance and support. Cooke cites an 89-year-old rider who has been cycling from Howick to Papakura and back every Sunday for years. “He’s finding the hills a little ‘taller’ recently, but wants to carry on cycling into his 90s.” Cooke is keen to make reference to a recent trial he has seen in a medical journal comparing the benefits between e-bikes and conventional bikes – they both provide fitness benefits, particularly for older riders. Brownlie, a former motor mechanic in Australia who turned to bikes, was last week assembling and testing the first of the bikes to go out on the shop floor. They both expect the new brand to fare well in a store offering very high spec bike brands from the United States and Europe. Only six weeks old, the new store is well-stocked now and carries accessories like top-of-the-line European helmets, purpose-built tow bar-mounted bike carriers and comfortable gel bike seats. Bike servicing and support is also provided in store. Open from Tuesday until Sunday (Saturday and Sunday from 10am4pm), the store now also now offers an e-bike hire service. Customers can also test-drive the bikes on nearby quiet roads and paths in Huntington Park, or on more adventurous hill-climbs nearby. Cooke & Brownlie find that many riders enjoy it when one of them goes out with test riders. “Some riders are a bit nervous, because our shop is right beside busy Ti Rakau Drive. Botany’s new electric bikes specialists are seeing a number of trends emerge at their Amera Place store. Electrify NZ Botany owner Anthony Cooke says the biggest trend is that many people are beginning to understand just how much of a game changer an e-bike can be. This typically occurs the first time someone rides an e-bike and usually ends their ride with a smile on their face and says something like “Wow, that was easy ... and so much fun!” “E-bikes put the enjoyment back into bike riding for many people, and the result is they end up riding more often and cycling further, just because it’s easy to do so,” says Cooke. E-bikes are such an enabler, that they really should be thought of as a distinct category of their own, not just a faster bike. Cooke says e-bikes expand the number of people who can and do ride bikes and “that can only be good”. Some typically younger customers purchase to commute to work; others are purchasing mostly for recreational reasons. Many e-bike purchasers are people who haven’t necessarily been frequent riders of their ordinary bike, if they even own one at all. But what they find, says Cooke, is that having an e-bike allows them to participate and keep up with more seasoned

he Auckland Rental Property Investment Index has experienced a further increase this month, largely as a result of more investors looking to increase the size of their Auckland property portfolio, according to Crockers Property’s Auckland market research for December. This may reflect the flattening sales environment, as the Auckland

Auckland median prices & sales numbers The median sales price for Auckland residential properties increased from $840,000 in September to $855,000 in October, slightly higher than the same time last year ($840,000). Meanwhile, sales volume also increased from 1745 to 2149. This reflects the largest spike in sales since April and the largest yet recorded for the September period.
Auckland rental prices
The average Auckland rent for 2-bedroom residential properties has increased from $494 to $502 this month, while the average 2-bedroom rental across New Zealand has remained at $420 for the third consecutive month. This has resulted in the Auckland 2-bedroom premium increasing slightly to 20 per cent. The average rent for 3-bedroom properties in Auckland has also increased this month from $631 to $634, whilst average 3-bedroom rents across New Zealand have softened from $495 to $480, due to a strong decrease in monthly rent prices in Wellington. This has resulted in the Auckland 3-bedroom premium increasing from 27 per cent to 32 per cent this month.

A
former Saint Kentigern College student has jumped to the defence of the school in the national debate raging over poaching of top sportsmen from other high schools. Timothy Apisai, 24, is responding to a decision by 10 Auckland school’s 1st XV teams to refuse to play against St Kents next year in the prestigious 1A competition after the college admitted five senior players from 1st XVs around the country will be joining its top team in 2019. St Kents principal David Hodge told national media that College Sport Auckland sets the rules for the competition and St Kents abides by them. Hodge told Radio NZ in an interview: “I believe they are punishing us because we have a tremendous player development scheme that goes way beyond rugby. I have a recent letter from the Rugby Union which praises our programme not only rugby.” He told RNZ the programme was designed to help personal development of young people. Because of the programme, it gets “huge numbers” of aspiring young players to come to St Kents. In a letter to Hodge, the 10 Auckland principals said: “It is our view that the enrolment of five senior students from current 1st XV Rugby
teams is against the spirit of the 1A competition and underlying purpose of competitive schoolboy sport.” In a third letter dated December 3, RNZ reported that the principals were disappointed by Saint Kentigern’s response not to sign up to a code of practice and set of principles which included a ban on player recruitment or inducement from other schools’ 1st XVs, including the offering of scholarships. “It is the immediate decision of each of our schools that in 2019 our 1st XV Rugby teams will not now compete against St Kentigern College.” Apisai, a former student and sportsman at the college, said these scholarships offer not only a chance to represent St Kents at an elite level, but a chance for a better education. “The atmosphere that the school has created, makes sure each and every student thrives with countless opportunity,” he said. “Let’s start off by saying all schools poach. However, why deny playing against the best? Saint Kents not only are the competition but they help create the competition. “Why deprive our kids of the opportunity to play at a high school to further themselves both academically and in their chosen sport? “Wouldn’t it be better playing

Apisai, who is currently finishing his second year of studies in marketing and communication at Massey University, said during his time at Saint Kents, he represented New Zealand in the U19 FIBA Oceania competition against Australia in basketball. “I’m a scholarship child (basketball). I can honestly say that if I wasn’t offered the opportunity to attend Saint Kents then I wouldn’t have been able to further my basketball achievements,” he said. “The school never made me get up at 5.30am everyday to train. The school didn’t make me into the player that I was. I did. The countless trainings, the countless study sessions, that was all me. “The school offers guidance but it’s up to the student to partake in bettering themselves.” Apisai reckons some kids wouldn’t be able to showcase their talents if they weren’t scouted. “To be honest, everyone poaches. Saint Kentigern College are just fortunate enough to have the means to offer students a more favourable outcome in furthering their dreams and aspirations.”
‘Your local Auckland park could be about to gain a Maori name as local boards consult Maori groups on how to tell the “unique stories of Tamaki Makaurau”. Brains Park, Dickey Reserve and Eastdale Reserve are just three among 99 places picked by the Whau Local Board in its first group of parks and reserves to go through the review. The Auckland Council move to add Maori names or even have them replace existing names was initiated by mana whenua - Auckland Maori who have mana and ancestral connections in some part of the region. Mana whenua groups are being asked to propose Maori names to local boards. As well as local parks, reserves and domains, the renaming programme will include 53 regional parks and cemeteries, plus libraries; council leisure centres and other community places will be added later. “The scale of the programme is significant,” council officials said in a report. “It is estimated there are more than 4100 parks and places across Tamaki Makaurau.” The council hopes that, in line with its Maori language policy, the re-naming will foster learning of te reo Maori and the associated Auckland Maori history and values. Almost all of the 4100 parks in Auckland have been created by post 1840 settlers and councils hard work and enterprise but like the gifting

To change the names of parks and buildings is an insult to those people they are named for as in many cases the land was donated by those whose names the park bears or they honour contributions made by those named The Howick Local Board when considering changes of names to local parks etc would do well to remember the problems created when the ward name of Howick was going to be changed to Te Irirangi. quality and fairness for all is the end goal for everyone living in New Zealand, whether citizens, residents, or here on a visa of one type or another. We should all be treated the same in our social life and in the workplace. The Health and Safety at Work Act and the Employment Relations Act requires employers to create a safe and secure working environment. Despite that, some employers/employees/managers ignore any question of fairness and treat a colleague or workmate with callous disregard. At times though, if it is not overt, it might be difficult to put your finger on why you feel unsettled at work, so how can you tell that you are in fact being bullied? Apart from physical violence or the threat of it, or threatening language, bullying behaviour can include constant put-downs, especially when it is done in public, nit-picking, fault finding, comments about an individual’s appearance, too much or too little work - in fact, there are a myriad of reasons too numerous to detail in this brief summary. But do not despair. You do not have to accept an employer, manager, or workmate’s attempts to drive you to resign or to continually belittle you, with the expectation that you will not fight back. There are many avenues open to you to prevent that happening. If you do believe that you are
being bullied, try to get the moral support of your co-workers, speak to friends and family, talking about such issues is always helpful rather than bottling it up and brooding about the situation. Often this leads to becoming very stressed, depressed and anxious. Keep notes of each incident, and who was present at the time, and then bring it to the attention of your employer. The bullying may be instigated by co-workers, a manager or supervisor, but the ultimate responsibility for resolving the situation lies with the employer. If you are not comfortable talking to your employer, you could talk to your trade union representative - if you are a member of a union - or a health and safety officer (if the business is of a size to warrant one) or even just write to your employer documenting
the issues and what you want done to have these resolved. You have rights and should enforce them. If your employer does not take any action it might then be appropriate to start a personal grievance procedure against them, for allowing you to be subject to bullying behaviour. One final note, try to avoid resigning or being forced out of your job. Get advice from your union, a lawyer, or the Citizens Advice Bureau. Johnson gifted but flawed F
ew sportsmen blessed with Shaun Johnson’s natural gifts fail to realise their potential as he has done. It is a great pity and I hope he realises his dream of winning a NRL crown with the Cronulla Sharks after failing to do so in his eight years with the NZ Warriors. However he wasn’t worth the $1 million a season the Warriors were paying him because there was too much brittleness to his play amongst the flashes of breath-taking brilliance. Great halves like the retired Andrew Johns and Jonathan Thurston are game breakers, players who seized the moment to catapult their teams to victory at crucial moments. Johnson, blessed with startling acceleration and an amazing sidestep, lacks their passing and kicking skills. But, most of all, he lacks their confidence and nerve. With the Warriors having made the NRL top eight playoffs for the first time in seven years, Johnson failed to deliver in the first game against the Penrith Panthers. He did, however, win man of the match honours in the Kiwis 26-24 win against the Kangaroos though many felt that recognition should have gone to rookie Joseph Manu who had just won

a NRL medal with the Sydney Roosters. Again, Johnson failed to deliver in the first two away tests against England before bouncing back beautifully with a strong third game in the 34-0 third test triumph. Which once again illustrated what an enigma he is. No Kiwi halfback has scored the magical tries that Johnson has although many will claim the more consistent Stacey Jones, Gary Freeman and Kenny Stirling were better value than the Million Dollar Man. However there were times too much was expected of him, especially a few years ago when it took time for him to regain form and confidence after a horrendous ankle injury. Unfortunately, when he did recover, he persisted in kicking
too much when his true value to the team was in his elusive running. Sadly the Kiwis let go Mason Lino long before agreeing to Johnson’s demand to end his contract a year early. Lino had impressed when given his chance this year and looked to be Johnson’s logical successor. Finding a champion replacement won’t be easy although the club claims it has several promising youngsters. Interestingly, like new Kiwis coach Michael Maguire, Cronulla believe Johnson’s best position is not halfback but five-eighths where he has a little more space to execute his attacking flair. It’s a smart switch I believe should have happened years ago.
Meanwhile, all of a sudden, New Zealand cricket has an abundance of outstanding spinners when just a few years ago it worried about finding a replacement for Daniel Vettori. Since then Mitch Santner and Ish Sodhi have managed to fill the void on wickets conducive to their talent with Todd Astle receiving fewer chances. But with injury making them unavailable for the away series against Pakistan, Ajaz Patel and Will Somerville gleefully grabbed their chance. Patel’s brilliant bowling won the Black Caps the first test before Pakistan thrashed them in the second, only for the Black Caps to win an historic decider with Patel (3-42) and Somerville (3-52 and 7-127 for the match) doing the damage in the hosts’ second innings after splendid centuries from Kane Williamson and BJ Watling. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

The girls came a very respectable sixth out of 11 teams, and had a personal best score of 42.52.

Sensational week for cricket club ■■By Jim Allnatt The Marie Raos Ray White Premier Men defeated a strong Cornwall side at Cornwall Park by 35 runs. Batting first, Howick Pakuranga totalled 238/6 in its 50 overs. The innings was held together by Andrew Morrison who scored 63 and David Winn dominating the opposition bowlers with 101 scored off 97 balls. Winn has a habit of scoring centuries at vital times and this was no exception. His partnership with Morrison was worth 85 runs. Howick’s bowlers kept Cornwall under tight control and when the seventh wicket fell at 127 it was just a matter of time. Danru Ferns 3/36, Donovan Grobbelaar 2/30, Rudi Botadra 2/32 and Adam Jones 2/25 shared the wickets. Howick hosted Ellerslie in the mid-week T 20 competition and it was only due to some outstanding bowling by Grobbelaar who took 4/14 and Rowan Naude with 2/14 supported by the rest of the attack that the Alpacas came out on top. After only managing to score 117 in its innings with only Morrison getting into the 20s, it looked as if the local side was facing defeat. However Grobbelaar immediately put Ellerslie on the back foot dismissing two batsmen for ducks in the first over and after that the bowlers maintained consistent pressure. Ellerslie finished at 98/8, 19 runs short. Another century was scored in the Women’s Premier match against Waitakere/University who were finalists in last season’s championship. Howick batted first and scored 307/2 off its 50 overs. Rewa Arora opened with Radhika Patel in a 77 run stand with Arora scoring 44 and Patel went on to make 60. Natasha Van Tilburg came in at number 3 and really rattled the scoring rate along with an undefeated 124 runs off 97 balls including 15 fours and a six. Holly Topp partnered her and she was 44* at the end of the innings. Natasha’s century was the first for a Howick Pakuranga Premier Women’s side and the total was also the highest ever. Waitakere was bowled out for 106 in just over 30 overs. Rae Allright with 3/14 off 14 overs was outstanding with Josie Penfold 2/35 and Alyssa Bowden 2/14 chipping in. Currently the Howick women lie second in the table which signifies the improvement in the team performance this season.

owick College has come away with their third national title in two weeks. The Howick College Premier Mixed Touch Rugby Team played in the NZ Secondary Schools tournament last Friday through to Sunday at Bruce Pulman Park. The team finished top of the Greater Auckland Competition earlier this year qualifying for the national tournament where schools from all around the country come to compete for the title. The mixed team lost the final last year by one try to Paeroa and they were determined to make amends this year.
The team met Paeroa in their pool play and came through with a 9-8 win, a very tight and exciting game. After three wins on day 1, the mixed team finished top of their pool placing them into the top division and playing for a semi-final on Day 3. Day 2 saw the team play four games starting at 8am. The team played exciting and welldrilled touch as a team. Four wins took the team to a semi- final against Tauponui-a-Tia, winners of their region on Sunday morning. Winning the semi-final 8-3, the team was set to get the title later in the afternoon. A very focussed and
determined team lead by Captain Chase Pamatatau and coaches George Pamatatau and Mark Hodson had only one goal and that was the gold. The team played Lincoln College from Christchurch and played a well-executed game of touch rugby completing the weekend with their ninth win, 10-5, and a national title. The following players were named in the mixed tournament team – Isla Norman-Bell also named MVP female for the mixed section. Francis Morrison, Nui Andrews and Chase Pamatatau. Chase was also named MVP male for the mixed section.
The World School Sevens have come to town. Warm-up matches began on Wednesday with a team challenge at Eastern Beach planned for this afternoon. The World School Sevens kick-off at Pakuranga Rugby Club on Friday (December 14) from 6pm-9pm and also Saturday (December 15) from 5:30pm. It showcases the best U18 sevens boys and girls talent from New Zealand and the Pacific including U18 teams from Australia, Tonga, Fiji, Canada, Japan, Vanuatu plus New Zealand. In addition there will be a number of expat teams including Samoan Barbarians, Tongan Barbarians, NZ Niue, NZ Fijians and NZ Dutch. This is the third year of the event and it is starting to see some real growth over the last few years. It has grown from 10 teams in 2016 to 19 teams this year. The tournament is the brainchild of Phil Gaze who also event-manages the Condor Sevens, the National Secondary School Sevens which has grown exponentially from 16 teams to more than 100 teams over the last seven years.

In 2016 Gaze was in conversations with NZ Rugby who informed him that the Australian Rugby Union wanted to develop their sevens programme. Gaze caught wind of the conversation and the rest is history. Gaze, the tournament director, told the Times: “ I am extremely excited about the 3rd edition of the World School Sevens U18 tournament. It’s going to be a fantastic display of the next generation of Sevens stars. “With six players from previous tournaments now contracted players with Australia and New Zealand, the tournament is going to unleash some exciting new players.” Seven of the international teams are staying locally at Willow Park, Christian Camp in Eastern Beach. The finals will be live on Sky.

Christmas coming early for our families

hristmas is coming early for families in Howick with an afternoon and evening of fun and carol singing being planned in Lloyd Elsmore Park. The second annual Christmas on the Lawn event is being held at the Depot, Lloyd Elsmore Park (behind the netball courts) on Saturday December 15 from 5pm – 8pm. The event is being run by cession|community|trust. Christmas on the Lawn is an open-air BYO picnic on the front lawn at the Depot in Lloyd Elsmore Park, with a Christmas Carol sing-along included. There’s plenty of fun to be had with bouncy castles for young and old, sausages, drinks and candy floss for purchase, as well as games for children and youth. Santa has booked the event in his diary, after a busy weekend at the Howick Santa Parade! Trust chairperson, and

We’re going old school with neighbours getting together for a Christmas Carol singalong,” said Pastor Jones. Entry to the event is free and there’s plenty of parking at the Depot. Christmas on the Lawn is being run with the support of the Howick Local Board which has been a consistent investor in the strong community focus that is offered through the Depot facility. Chelsea Winter’s Cranberry & Maple Glazed Ham PREP TIME: 40 MINUTES COOK TIME: 3–4 HOURS SERVES: 10–12 PLUS LEFTOVERS ► 1 pre-cooked ham (whole or half) ► 1½ cups orange or pineapple juice, chicken stock or water
GLAZE ► 1 x 275g jar cranberry sauce ► 1 cup orange juice
► 1 cup pineapple juice ► ¾ cup maple syrup ► ¼ cup brown sugar ► ¼ cup sugar ► 50g butter (optional) ► zest and juice of 2 oranges ► 2 tbsp Dijon mustard ► 1 tsp ground ginger ► ½ tsp ground cloves ► ½ tsp mixed spice
I
reckon Christmas is better when it features a big glistening glazed ham — and this is the glaze to end all glazes! It’s simple to make and incredibly tasty — I’ve had nothing but rave reviews from those who have tried it. I don’t really like the idea of jamming cloves all over a ham (ever bitten into a whole clove?). It’s nice and easy this way and you still get the lovely spiced clove flavour from the glaze. Take the ham out of the fridge 30–60 minutes before cooking, if you can. Slide a finger in under the skin (it helps to use the tip of a knife sometimes to get it started) and carefully peel the thin skin away — leave all of the cloudy white fat layer there for flavour and moisture. Keep peeling until all the skin is removed. To make the glaze, combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan. Simmer for 20–30 minutes until reduced to a thin syrupy consistency. Using a small sharp knife, make a series of diagonal slices about 3cm apart and a few millimetres deep through the fat layer around the whole ham. Cut another series in the opposite direction, so you end up with rough diamond shapes. Transfer to a roasting dish, on a rack if you have one. Now you can choose to either serve the ham hot, or just glaze it, heat the outside and serve it warm or cold. To serve the ham hot, preheat the oven to 160°C regular bake. Calculate your cooking time — about 10 minutes per 500g. (To calculate, round your ham’s weight to the nearest kilogram. Multiply that by 2. Then multiply that number by 10 to get your cooking time in minutes. Divide that by 60 to get your time in hours. So if my ham was 9kg: 9 x 2 = 18. 18 x 10 = 180 minutes. 180 minutes ÷ 60 = 3 hours cooking time.) Pour the fruit juice, chicken stock or water into the dish, cover with foil (try not to let the foil touch the ham), and cook for the calculated time. Remove the ham from the oven and discard the foil. Increase the oven temperature to 170°C. Brush the ham generously all over with the glaze, and return it to the oven to cook uncovered for 1 hour. Baste the ham with more glaze another three or four times while it’s cooking. If you’re not ready to serve yet, you can keep it in the oven at 50°C for an hour or two until you’re ready. To serve the ham warm or cold, preheat the oven to 180°C regular bake. Part II - Unwrapping Christmas: Special time of the year, a festival for all peoples
I
n our 2018 Christmas Feature, we’re Unwrapping Christmas with the help of the East Auckland Ministers’ Association. Each week, we’ll unwrap a distinctive facet of Christmas. A recent cup of coffee in a Howick café, led to a question: is Christmas a Western festival? Rather like the cup of coffee, a discussion on the origins of Christmas is complicated. Coffee itself is said to have originated in Ethiopia. But the coffee that day was grown in South America, roasted in New Zealand and prepared in Italian style! It’s complicated. Similarly, in unwrapping the origins of Christmas, we discover a rich cultural context and a faith that has flourished in every corner of the world. The first Christmas occurred far from Western Europe. Further than poet William Blake suggested in his poem “Jerusalem”: And did those feet in ancient time, Walk upon England’s mountains green:

That first Christmas evening took place in a little town, not far from Jerusalem. Bethlehem, a hotly contested piece of real estate and cultural melting pot that has changed hands five times since WWI. It is here, the Prince of
Peace, Jesus, was born to Mary, originally from Nazareth, in the northern region of Israel. You can imagine her gazing at his sparkling blue eyes and wispy blonde hair as he lay in the manger. Except there weren’t too many blonde Jews at the time. Scholars agree that Galilean Israelites, such as Jesus, were much more likely to feature dark
hair, olive skin, and brown eyes. Surprisingly for many, Jesus was a born a Jew. The cradle of Christmas was Middle Eastern. The visitors to Jesus over the ensuing days and months were no less diverse. The first worshippers, low caste shepherds from the surrounding hill country, demonstrated that the new King would not define his followers by social or economic status. This was only confirmed in later life as Jesus chose a rag tag band of fishermen, political agitators and tax accountants as his first followers. Then there were the three Kings, from “Orientare”. Except they weren’t kings, “Orientare” isn’t actually a place and there may have been more than three. What we know is they brought three gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh. Less certain is their point of origin. The usual answer is from Persia, where they are identified with a caste of Zoroastrian astrologers and philosophers. Others point to the nature of the gifts and Old
Testament passages, suggesting the Magi came from the ancient kingdom of Sheba, in modern day Yemen at the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula. Whatever their origin and religion, these ancient tourists brought gifts fit for a king on a pilgrimage that was far more spiritual than diplomatic. The Jesus they came to worship did not define his influence by race or ethnicity, by social or economic status, or by religion or belief. The origins of Christmas reveal a Jesus born for all people, for all times and places. God with us. Even those of us who find ourselves in the West, from wherever we have come. The East Auckland Ministers’ Association comprises more than 65 churches in the Howick Ward area and would be glad to welcome you to a Christmas service this year. ow an institution in Burswood/ Ti Rakau Drive area, the annual ‘Christmas in Burswood’ (CIB) will again be held in Burswood Park from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Sunday December 16. There will be live music with carols, children’s Christmas presentation and games, free food and other free entertainment put on by East City Wesleyan Church, together with
the Howick Local Board and Faz Najami of Ray White. Rev Josh Bowlin of nearby East City Wesleyan Church told Times Newspapers, “The Burswood Christmas event is a family friendly event in the middle of a wonderful housing estate.
