he newspaper industry – like retail - has faced monumental change in recent years with the advance of technology and social media. The way in which audiences – particularly the younger demographic – tap into news will never be the same. Globally, print media companies have had to adjust the way in which they reach out and connect with their communities. We are seeing the bigger, dominant players usher in massive changes to news delivery with a focus more on digital and entertainment. The failure of NZ’s two dominant media giants – both owned offshore – to merge has seen dramatic changes to the landscape already. This was most telling with the redundancies this month of

Which is where independently-owned companies like ours come into their own. As locally-owned newspapers, we focus on our coverage areas with a passion, to bring readers hyper-local news – good and bad – from within our tight-knit communities. And we’re not the only community papers like this. There are around 85 at the moment (who like us belong to the NZ Community Newspapers Association), operating around the country on a very personal level. That’s what we do. We focus only on local content and

we’re all thriving in this tricky media environment. This seems to be borne out in a recent research phone company 2degrees commissioned asking more than 2000 Kiwis how they communicate in their communities, where they get their local news from, and what role technology is playing in all of this. The key finding is that 29 per cent of Kiwis said that they find out about what’s going on in their communities by reading the local paper or magazine. This was the leading response, surpassing social media, Neighbourly and other forms of communication. Surprising? A little, but encouraging that we are the go-to for local news stories – big and small – and events and sports and Nana’s 100th birthday. We like to be there when your school shines and your

Howick honours Grace Millane On Wednesday December 12, dozens of people gathered on Stockade Hill in a Vigil celebrating the life and mourning the loss of British tourist Grace Millane. The vigil was organised to remember Grace and celebrate the birthday she never got to celebrate herself. Grace was on her OE when she was allegedly murdered on the eve of her 22nd birthday. Her body was recovered in the Waitakere Ranges and a man has been charged with her murder. As the sun set, the cenotaph lit up with candles and fairy lights. The community paid their respects by laying flowers and photos of Grace along the steps.

olana Carpenter has won the ‘My Future’ project award aimed at assisting students who struggle to learn at school due to dyslexia. The prize includes a grant of $1000 and a gift card of $500 to help her kick-start her project. The Year 11 Ormiston College student was surprised when she heard that from the four finalists judged by a panel of industry specialists, she was the overall winner of the Auckland-wide community campaign by Sylvia Park. ‘My Future’ involved the public nominating an outstanding high school student that they think deserves recognition for their exceptional work and is an extraordinary leader in the community. The 15-year old, who is mildly dyslexic, has dedicated a lot of time in researching dyslexiafriendly fonts that can assist students to access learning materials. Solana says fonts like Verdana, Helvetica, Arial and Courier work best for those with learning disorders. “For high functioning dyslexic students it helps when the fonts are bigger, on a non-glossy paper, preferably cream and not

white. “So many students struggle to read the question paper during exams and cannot make sense of the question, not because they are stupid but because they are mildly dyslexic. Unfortunately a lot of them are not even aware of it because they have not been tested,” she says. Solana believes that there is a lot more reading and writing to be done in Years 11, 12 and 13, which is a huge challenge for a lot of students. “We use SciPAD, have Maths work books and worksheets which involve a lot of reading and writing that students struggle with. And it’s too late by then to learn how to read or write,” she points out. “While the dyslexia spectrum is very vast, taking all these elements together makes the fonts more user-friendly, inclusive and works for both dyslexic and non dyslexic people.” What started out as a science project with the help of her coach Robin Wills, from Wymondly Primary School, has now taken a life of its own as Solana has continued working on it over the years. She now intends to use the $1000 grant money to connect with Auckland University and find out how she can conduct

research on a larger scale. Once she has gathered more data she plans to contact NZQA, Scholastic Books and companies that publish school jour-

nals and advice them on how to make books and question papers more student friendly and do her bit to help those who are severely dyslexic.

t was almost 35 years ago that beauty pageant Director Val Lott first held the Miss Howick Carnival Queen where Bo Burns, this year’s organiser of the Howick Santa Parade, took to the stage. Bo placed second in her section and was also one of three little 10-year-old girls to be mascots in the First Miss Howick. “It was Bo’s fond memories of these days that inspired her to bring back Miss Howick Carnival Queen. So she contacted me and the rest is history,” says Val, who organised the Miss Howick Carnival Queen at this year’s Howick Santa Parade. “I absolutely loved coordinating it again this year,” says Val. “My dear friend and choreographer for Miss Howick, Sarah Melville-Smith stepped up to help me. Sarah was Miss Howick 1993 and has coordinated all my shows ever since, including Miss Auckland and Miss Universe New Zealand. “Kylie Anderson, another former Miss Howick winner, also helped coach this year’s older girls in Miss Howick Carnival Queen,” says Val, who used to run confidence and modelling classes for children from the ages 6-12 years prior to hosting Miss Howick. “And at the end of the year they all

entered Howick Carnival Queen,” she says. “I always had three sections six to eight years, nine to 10 years and 11-12 years. This year with no Miss Howick for the older girls, I introduced a section 13-16 years. “Seeing how much the children loved this year’s show, I would like to re-commence the classes for next year. If I think I have the energy of course.”

ission Heights Junior College young filmmakers Farhaan Muhammed, Andrew Ma and Raiyan Khan have won the Auckland Council Filmmaker award for their short film Gaming Addiction in this year’s Outlook for Someday New Zealand Challenge. Competing against 40 films shortlisted, (five of which came from Mission Heights Junior College student teams), Gaming Addiction addresses the question: What happens when you get so involved that the game is playing you? As young people, they added their voices to awareness of mental health through this film. The challenge was to make a short film (up to five minutes) about sustainability, to help grow a generating of sustainability storytellers. Students from ages seven to 24 were allowed to interpret sustainability the way they wanted to. A panel of 12 judges from media, government and business agencies judged the best from 133 entries. During their acceptance speech, at St Matthew’s in

We are often in turmoil with balancing the demands of a technological world.... and gaming addiction is one issue confronting many of us today,” they said. They quoted Barack Obama

saying: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We’re the change we seek.” As young people, they are adding their voices to awareness of mental health through this film. Unwrapping Christmas: What’s with the baby?

H

uman babies are uniquely helpless creatures. Other species show much greater robustness in the early stages of life. Sea turtles find themselves on the journey of their lives as they scamper across the sand towards the ocean just moments after hatching. When a baby giraffe is born, it drops up to 6 feet to the ground and lands on its head and is able to haul itself upright and walk within hours of birth. Yet a human child’s first steps are considered a milestone to celebrate around a year later. Actually, if you’re sitting up at six months, you’re doing well. Which only underlines the question: what’s with the baby and Christmas? It’s hard to imagine a worse idea than God’s plan to enter human history as a baby. Defenceless. Vulnerable. Completely at the mercy of his creation…us. Yet, this is exactly what we celebrate at Christmas: the eternal Creator of the Universe who became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood. This moment of vulnerability is much more significant for humanity than the familiar, maybe overly sentimental, renderings of baby Jesus, meek and mild. Jesus was born into a hostile environment to a low caste family

At Christmas, we see what love looks like: a baby laid in a manger. Photo osv.com in a country that was under Roman occupation. He survived an early assassination attempt by the Roman client King of Judea, Herod, while still an infant. His family became political refugees fleeing across the border to Egypt. God put himself in harm’s way when he reached out to us in a flesh and blood way. He did this so we could know what He, God, is like. It turns out God is not standing at a distance offering judgment without compassion. He’s up close and personal, living the blood, sweat and tears of authentic human existence. It turns out God is not beyond our human pain and brokenness, but sharing it. It turns out that God is so utterly committed to humanity that he will act dangerously to connect with us. At Christmas, God shows us he has

‘skin in the game’. God who says He is love proves it. Lives it. And ultimately dies for it. The echo of Easter and Jesus’ humiliating execution on a Roman cross is not far from the cradle. Because God put himself in harm’s way for us. Jesus, the man, showed us what a fully realised human life can look like. His teachings continue to resonate thousands of years later. His sacrificial death has inspired generations. His resurrection split history in two. Yet, at Christmas, we see what love looks like: a baby laid in a manger. At Christmas, God became what He is not, in order that we might become who we were created to be. May we see God’s love reflected to us this Christmas as we gaze once more on the baby Jesus, asleep on the hay. his slice tastes even better than it looks — and in my humble opinion, it looks freakin’ amazing! Don’t be fooled into thinking this is one of those Christmassy larks full of glacé cherries and candied peel. No, what we have here are deliciously chewy, tangy cranberries, and crunchy macadamia and pistachio nuts with an incredible creamy white chocolate and cream cheese icing. I’ve ?nished it off with freeze-dried mandarins which are delicious if you can ?nd them (in most supermarkets and specialty food stores). This slice makes a delightful homemade Christmas gift — or just keep it in the fridge to enjoy with a cuppa. Preheat the oven to 180°C regular bake. Line a slice tin (mine was 24cm square) with baking paper. Place the butter, sugar, vanilla and lemon zest in a medium saucepan over a low heat and stir until melted. When just melted, remove from the heat and cool for a few minutes. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl and stir to combine evenly. Add the egg to the butter mixture and whisk to combine. Add the chocolate, cranberries, oats and nuts, and stir. Sift the ?our mixture in and stir to combine evenly. Scrape into the prepared tin and press out into an even layer with clean damp ?ngers (or lay a sheet of cling wrap on top and press out on top of that). Bake in the oven for about 18 minutes or until turning golden. Cool in the tin. To make the icing, break the chocolate into pieces and add to a heatproof bowl with the butter. Fit over a saucepan of gently simmering water (don’t let the water touch the bowl). Heat, stirring every now and then, until melted and smooth. Remove from the heat. (If the chocolate seizes and goes grainy, try stirring in 2 teaspoons rice bran oil.) Beat the cream cheese in a smallish bowl until smooth. Sift in the icing sugar, add the lemon juice and beat until smooth. Add a spoonful of melted chocolate, beat to combine, then repeat until all is combined. Spread on the cooled slice, sprinkle with the extra nuts and cranberries, and the freeze-dried mandarin (if using). Hundreds of Christmas boxes ready to go By Farida Master

T

here will be hundreds of happy hands packing in Christmas boxes and delivering them to families who deserve some Christmas cheer. Around 750 high quality food boxes, valued at $150 each, will be packed with Christmas ham, chicken, canned food and fresh produce. Steve Green, lead pastor of Elim Christian Centre, Botany, says that his year they have raised around $110,000 that will enable them to fund the Christmas boxes. “All the funds are raised by the people at the Elim Christian Centre,” he says. “A lot of people organise fundraisers, some of the proceeds come through donations and there are some sponsorships from people and companies.” Volunteers will start opening up the flattened cardboard cartons on Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday a conveyor belt is set up

at the school gymnasium, where hundreds of families come along with their children and friends to pack the boxes. People from the church will deliver the Christmas boxes on the same day; they will knock on doors and gift them to the people who have been nominated. The police have also partnered with Elim Christian Centre to deliver boxes. “Anyone can nominate names. A couple of hundred names are also nominated by the police and they partake in the activity of delivering the Christmas boxes as well. Stephany Campbell is the project coordinator and there is a team of volunteers who orchestrate it beautifully.” Steve says that the boxes are gifted not only to people who are struggling to make ends meet but also to those who have had a major upheaval in their lives. “We’ve been doing this for the last 10 years and it is just amazing. This year too it will bring so much hope and joy on Christmas,” he says.

All Saints’ Christmas lunch on Jesus brings cheer

etween paying bills and general household expenses, Christmas time can be difficult for some families. One generous parishioner from All Saints Church in Howick started an initiative in 2015 that helps make Christmas special for these families in need. The Christmas Lunch on Jesus initiative will provide families with

Christmas boxes containing meat, vegetables, drinks and other goodies – all the things that make an enjoyable Christmas lunch. The aim this year is to put together 125 Christmas boxes to gift to low income families who might struggle to put food on the table this Christmas. The names of these families have been supplied to the church by various agencies and

charitable organisations.

ich, fudgy and fabulously festive, these are the perfect little treat to bring out with tea or coffee — any time, not just at Christmas. There are two recipes: one gluten free, and one gluten and dairy free. If you have nut allergies, you can leave the ground almonds out and add more coconut. You can even just make them plain, without the almond or coconut inside, but they won’t be as stable and will eventually go soft on a hot day (as well as being harder to roll). Line a baking tray with baking paper. Chop the chocolate up into small pieces and place in a heatproof bowl. If making gluten-free truffles, add the butter. Heat the cream or coconut cream in a saucepan over a medium heat. Keep an eye on it — when it’s just started simmering, pour it over the chocolate. Leave to sit for a few minutes, then lightly whisk until all the chocolate is melted and well combined, scraping the sides clean with a spatula. Stir through the coconut and almonds (if using), and leave in the fridge for a few hours, or until firmed up enough to roll. Use a spoon to dig out portions of mixture and roll into smooth balls. This works best with dry hands — you might need to wash and dry them a few times (and don’t use your best tea towel!). Yes, it will get messy. Place the balls on the prepared tray and, if you need to, refrigerate for 15 minutes to firm up again. Tip the coatings into separate bowls. Before coating each truffle, roll it in your hand so the outside goes sticky — it will hold the coating better. Swirl the truffle around in one of the coatings (using your hands to press the pistachios or coconut on if you need to), and gently replace on the tray. Repeat until all the truffle mixture is gone. Store in the fridge and plate up the truffles when you’re ready to serve them. (You might want to reswirl the raspberry or plum ones if they go patchy.) Law forces mother back into domestic abuse situation T

racy Signal is a devoted mother and grandmother. But on January 25 the Howick woman will have to take her 24-yearold daughter and two grandchildren back to Australia where her daughter’s alleged abusive ex-partner is waiting for them. Tracy’s daughter, Taryn, who is a NZ citizen, fled Australia in April this year with her two-year-old to escape what she says has been years of physical and emotional abuse from her expartner who also suffers from drug addiction. Taryn had lived in Australia away from her family with little financial and emotional support until she plucked up the courage to leave. Shortly after arriving in NZ, Taryn found out she was expecting her second child who has recently been born in New Zealand. A few weeks after she arrived she told her ex-partner where she was and he has since applied to have her return their child to Australia under the Hague Convention, an international agreement that covers parental child “abduction”. It provides a process through which a parent can seek to have their child returned to their home country. Tracy says under The Hague Convention, Taryn has been given until the end of January to return to Queensland without consideration for her safety and well-being and that of the children. Taryn will return to Australia with nowhere to live and no support. They have been given till December 20 to provide proof that they have purchased flights back to the Gold Coast which is expected to cost more than $2000. If Taryn fails to do so in time, Tracy says she risks having her ex-partner fly to New Zealand and legally take the child back to Australia with him. Tracy says, thankfully, because Taryn’s youngest son who is only two weeks old at the time of print, was born in New Zealand, the Hague Convention cannot be applied to him. Tracy says once her daughter returns to Queensland, even after a custody settlement has been reached, she might not be allowed to leave the state without the permission of the father. Already the family has spent more than $30,000 on legal fees because legal aid is not given to court cases taking place in another country. Earlier this month Radio NZ reported that, according to lawyers, the convention, which hasn’t been changed since 1980, is being used to re-victimise women who have fled abusive relationships. RNZ spoke with Gina Masterton of Griffith University in Queensland who is working towards a PhD, with her focus on The Hague Convention. Masterton told RNZ 70 per cent of Hague Convention cases involved domestic violence because women are forced to flee Australia because of a lack of support from the government. “If you come here as a New Zealander for example, and you’re not an Australian citizen, you get no access to Centrelink, no access to legal aid,

no access to refuge because they use your Centrelink money to stay there,” Ms Masterton said. “So you’re really at a disadvantage. You can work, if you can find a job, but you don’t get any of the support from our government if you’re not a citizen.” She said her research shows that most of these women have already reported domestic violence to the police and taken out violence orders, protection orders and court orders. “This is a last resort for them, the leaving and putting the distance between themselves and the abuser,” Masterton says. Tracy says she is outraged that the government would order Taryn to return to a place where her safety is at risk. “It’s so exhausting and heartbreaking. A man who has physically abused my daughter, and who is also addicted to drugs and is rarely sober is allowed to dictate where my daughter can live,” she says. “She is scared for her life and this is why she left the country without asking his permission because she knew if she did she wouldn’t be going anywhere and she was fearful of the retaliation she would face.” Tracy says Taryn has never told the father he cannot see the children and has offered to have him visit them in NZ where they would provide him with food and accommodation. She has also agreed to work out a custody agreement that involves alternating visits between Australia and New Zealand in the school holidays. She says when Taryn and her expartner do speak, he verbally abuses her. “I want to know who takes responsibility for the safety of my daughter and my grandchildren if they are forced to live in the same place as him.” Tracy has been to Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown who says he will work to ensure Taryn and her children are given all of the legal support they are entitled to in Australia. “People hear the word ‘abduction’ and they think this order protects children who have been wrongfully stolen from one of their parents. But my daughter is just desperately trying to keep her children safe.” The Times has reached out to experts in Hague Convention Law and await a response.

I am incredibly proud to be your Member of Parliament and represent the fantastic electorate of Pakuranga. I would like to thank everyone in this great electorate for your support over the past year, which has been an incredibly busy one. Over the past year I have enjoyed working hard, getting out and about around the Pakuranga electorate, meeting with schools, businesses, community groups, ECEs and so many other individuals and organisations. What has struck me has been the extraordinary passion and dedication that everyone has to making Pakuranga an even better place to live, work and raise a family. I want to thank everyone that I have interacted with over the past year. Thank you for your thoughts, ideas and concerns that you have raised with me. I always enjoy listening to what people have to say, so that I can represent Pakuranga effectively in Parliament as your local Member of Parliament. I would also like to thank Times Newspapers for allowing me to write a regular column focussing on local and national issues which are important to Pakuranga. I have always enjoyed the feedback I have received from these columns. 2018 has also been a busy year in Parliament. I have been given new responsibilities as the Associate Education and Associate Tertiary Education Spokesperson for the National Party, and my Bill cracking down on Synthetic Drug dealers has continued to progress through Parliament. Fraser calls for youth engagement in education L

ocal high school student Ben Fraser’s petition to the Minister of Education has reached almost 1100 signatures. Started on Change.org and over social media, the campaign picked up support after it was featured on media networks including Radio New Zealand, TVNZ Breakfast and Stuff. The petition calls for greater student engagement in the education system through the appointment of a student to the NZQA Board. This would give students a voice in the future of their assessment system. “Student voice is paramount in the governance of our education system,” said Ben, 16. “Young people are the future of our society and the decisions we make today will have the greatest impact on them. By allowing us to share our views on education we can engage with NZQA and the education sector.” The petition has received broad support from both youth and adults with people signing from Kerikeri in the north to Invercargill in the south. ifeguards and siblings Taylor and Hogan Shrimpton have come back from the Lifesaving World Championships in Australia with numerous podium finishes. Taylor, 23, and brother Hogan, 25, have been volunteer lifeguards at Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service in Port Waikato for the past eight years. Hogan is an electrician and Taylor is working as a civil engineer in Manukau. They went to Point View Primary and then Sancta Maria College.
