espectful. That’s the impression that around a 100 people who attended the Meet the Candidates Night (Botany electorate) on Monday evening, got. The event organised, by Rev Dr Richard Waugh and Lloyd Wong at the East City Wesleyan Church in Burswood, started on a beautiful note with Bucklands Beach Primary student Cail Bowlin singing the national anthem. There was no heckling, heated arguments or candidates biting off each other’s heads – was the unanimous feedback from spectators who had gathered on a chilly evening to meet the Botany candidates for the General Election. Which says a lot about sitting National MP Jami-Lee Ross, Labour candidate Tofik Mamedov, Green Party candidate Julie Zhu and NZ First candidate Jenny Marcroft (not contesting from the Botany area but from the Tamaki electorate). However missing on stage was the newly-appointed leader of United Front and Botany candidate Damian Light and Maori Party candidate for Botany Wetex Kang. Both have been in the spotlight of late. They would have added some fire to the debate some felt, but Lloyd Wong, facilitator for the evening, explained that polls indicated, minor parties would have little or no bearing on the election result. With a tight time frame, each candidate was given three minutes to outline party policies on housing, transport and immigration. Award-winning device measures concussion ■■By Farida Master
W
ith more and more rugby players suffering from concussion, Ormiston Senior College student Dylan Townsend wanted to do something about it. For this year’s NIWA South and East Auckland Science and Technology Fair, Dylan created a device which can detect concussions and measure the impact of collisions during games. Titled Concussion Conundrum the scientific project which was demonstrated with a gelatine head that replicates the anatomy of a person’s head, won rave reviews from the judges who described it as a “well thought-out and executed solution”. Of the 120 entries from schools in the region, Dylan was awarded the premier award of $1000. That apart, he was awarded the award for best application in electronics as well as Best Year 13 Innovation, Invention or Investigation and the Premier Award for Best Exhibit of the Fair at the NIWA south and east Auckland Science and Technology prize giving held recently. “From learning about the feelings of helplessness and
confusion surrounding a concussion, I wanted to focus on providing more information to families so that they can form a better understanding of what they are going through,” says the young scientist in the making. The device, which can be integrated into head gear, can detect if a concussion has occurred during a collision through measuring the movement of the player’s head. “If their head moves at dangerous speed, the device will track it and inform coaches and parents that the player was involved in a big collision and may have suffered a concussion. “Having gained knowledge of electronics through using the internet, I can measure the impact of a collision by programming an electronic component called an accelerometer” he says. “The accelerometer measures the acceleration of the player’s head on three different axes (x, y and z) and the numerical values measured are stored on the device. “This data can be used by coaches and players to recognize when a concussion occurs through looking the dangerous levels of acceleration.” Organiser of the science fair

Scammers use hypnosis to rob victims ■■By Farida Master Hypnotising the vulnerable and robbing them of their money and valuables is a new scam that has been recently reported in the area. Fraudsters are quick to exploit the power of hypnosis by first making contact with lone victims, usually in deserted areas and winning over their trust. A resident of Half Moon Bay was recently the victim of a hypnotic scam. On her daily walk, Asian senior was approached by an Asian couple who appeared quite friendly and spoke to her in Mandarin. Unaware that she was being hypnotised, the woman was told to hand over all her possessions. Mesmerised, the lady took the offenders home and handed over all her cash and valuables to them. By the time the trance state wore off, the thieves were long gone. Area Commander Counties Manukau East, Inspector Wendy Spiller confirms the reported incident. “In Half Moon Bay an elderly Asian woman who was on her daily walk was confronted by an Asian couple who were able to put her in a trance,” she says. “The offenders then took the victim home where she handed over a large amount of cash and jewellery. “She then awoke from the trance, with no idea on how she was so affected.” “It sounds very strange but this sort of offending has been reported overseas and we want to make people aware as we do not want this to happen here,” she says.

unning as an Independent candidate for Hunua, it’s not immediately obvious where Ian Cummings sits on the political scale. “Definitely not left...I’m a conservative as far as social issues go. As far as fiscal issues go, I’m right...so I’m not left,” he says. Right, not left. Got it? Right. From a socialist background, the son of a fierce unionist, Cummings says he was first aligned to Labour before moving towards National in his university years after getting “a taste of how ugly that unionism is when I worked at Marsden Point a few years ago”. He says he decided to run on an Independent ticket in an effort to bring back more representation to the House of Representatives which he feels has lost some of that representation. He believes as an Independent, he offers an alternative to voters. “What I mean is if you’re in a party, you pretty much have to vote as per that party position and that actually means on some occasions that the local electorate, being Hunua, may not be represented in that vote.” Cummings describes Hunua’s biggest issues as “growing pains”. He says Hunua is becoming a very

desirable place to live and raise a family which means relentless population growth is on the way. “Obviously transport issues are major. I’d lobby the heck out of NZTA (NZ Transport Agency) etc to get improvements – there are improvements afoot but it’s too little and probably too late.” He’s aware of the need to fix roading capacity through use of public transport. “I live in Pukekohe and I drive down what’s considered to be the most dangerous road in New Zealand, State Highway 22. It’s unacceptable, really.” As far as the bigger issues go, he’s firm on his conservative standpoints. “I’m very hot on euthanasia in that I’m opposed to it and this issue has come up a lot. “My position is very clear – I don’t support it. There are only two leaders that agree it shouldn’t be changed – National and NZ First – and I’m of that camp as well.”

Maori wardens to safeguard communites W
ith more and more people in the Botany and Flat Bush area talking about the law and order situation as one of the main concerns they want something to be done about, Wetex Kang, Maori Party candidate for Botany is keen to finding solutions on creating safer communities. Integrating communities with supporters of the Maori Party, Mr Kang, Maori Party’s first Asian candidate, came up with a plan and is fast pushing it into action-even before the general elections. With the Botany community being the most culturally fragmented area the businessman who is a qualified pharmacist, nutritionist and bee-keeper, is keen to make the idea of Maori wardens rework. He says that not many people are aware that Maori wardens have legislative rights for disorderly behaviour. Though the initiative of Maori wardens working in tandem with Asian and Indian wardens was conceived by Peter Law 10 years ago it was discontinued due to his ill health. Ever since there have been efforts to make it work but the progress has been slow. “Maori talking to other Maori has a greater impact,” he says. Senior Maori wardens will be an instant deterrent for Maori and Polynesian youth offenders since they grow up with the culture of respecting the elderly in the community, he says. “When there is an incident, the wardens—a network of Maori, Chinese, and Polynesians—will call the police with a
walkie-talkie which is given to them by the police. I will also train them in Martial Arts so that they are safe and know how to protect them.” Last week, Mr Kang had mentioned that a Chinese community safety group was ready to donate two vehicles to the wardens. “I have been working with the Asian community on law and order issues, so bringing the Maori warden into the equation has always been part of my core campaign objectives,” he says. And from the looks of it, the idea has been actioned. An email from Tame and whanau Tamaki ki Te Tonga District Maori Wardens, a volunteer organisation, says that operational planning is now on the way to get started on the patrols asap. Operations Support team are getting ready to go out to the Botany and Flat Bush areas on Monday to Friday 10am-2pm during the day and on Thursday and Friday from 6pm-12am. The finer details are being worked out as operations will set up run sheets, mileage, patrol reports, incident reports, vehicle log and incident forms, vehicle health and safety log (first aid kit and other emergency equipment) and stakeholders accountability report. Apart from Maori wardens, Mr Kang also suggests having Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) at street corners, in order to help reduce crime. “In the city of Hangzhou in China there are no petty thefts since the offenders are immediately caught on camera,” he states

as an example. Mr Kang is currently working with a group of people from different ethnicities on a plan of the high crime areas in Flat Bush where CCTV cameras can be installed. He says it is a pity that the Crime Act has not been reviewed since 1962. “A law should be passed on controlled liquor licensing,” he suggests. “Also, no alcohol should be sold in supermarkets in East Auckland, like it is in West Auckland.” Driven and passionate about clamping down on increasing crime he says more money should be spent on border control to stop people bringing drugs into the country.
“Instead of being an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff we need to stop pseudoephedrine (commonly used as cold medicine), which is raw material for P, from entering the country. “Being a pharmacist I know how shipping consignments are preapproved if you have a good track record,” he elaborates. “We need to be stricter on border control.” Determined to make a difference, Mr Kang says he is going to donate his salary to charity for the next three years says, “If you vote for me I will speak for you and make it happen. Former prime minister presents Better infrastructure challenge coin to Baljit Kaur for Hunua - Bayly ■ BY FARIDA MASTER

t’s not very often that a former Prime Minister calls on an upcoming politician to tell her that he sees great potential. Labour candidate for Hunua Baljit Kaur was pleasantly surprised when she discovered that Mike Moore, former Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand and Director-General of the World Trade Organisation as well as former ambassador to the United States invited her to his home in Maraetai and gifted her a book titled The 9th Floor. Authored by journalists Guyon Espiner and Tim Watkin, the book presents in-depth interviews with five former Prime Ministers of New Zealand—Geoffrey Palmer, Mike Moore, Jim Bolger, Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark—reflecting on the time spent at the 9th floor of the Beehive. Elected at a time when the country was heading to bankruptcy, Mr Moore spoke to Ms Kaur about the New Zealand political landscape and suggested she read the book that gives a deep insight into the prime ministerial decisions that shaped New Zealand. “I was touched that he presented me with a Challenge Coin of the time he was with the World Trade Organisation. It was a huge honour for me,” says the Indianborn Labour candidate for Hunua. Ms Kaur says that attending election debates, public events,

campaign meetings, door-knocking, having media interviews and working on fundraising events – along with a full time job with Southern Cross – is a huge learning curve. And with a well-grounded leader like Jacinda Ardern supporting her, she feels empowered. “At our Labour Party fundraiser, Jacinda asked me if she could do the auctioning and she was so good at it. “A bottle of whisky signed by her, got us $1000,” she says. Last week Ms Kaur accompanied Ms Ardern to a building site where she announced the Prime Minister’s Vocational Excellence Award
of $2000 to building apprentices. The award is to encourage trades training in secondary schools. Talking about the electorate, Ms Kaur says that Hunua is experiencing ‘growth pains’ as parts of it change from a semi-rural electorate to urban suburb. “The nature and geographical spread of the electorate means the issues differ across the region. Eastern suburbs like Beachands and Maraetai could do with a post primary school as students are bussed into Howick. “There are no facilities for aged care, and youth lack a place to meet, hang out, make music and art.” There is plenty to be done, she says. “The older folk have had to move from Hunua where they’ve lived all their lives and raised children, due to no options for residential care in the area. Developers have simply not planned for the need of seniors. “Further, I will advocate for improved health, housing, transportation and employment opportunities for my electorate. “I will lobby to divert funds allocated for improving road safety towards Hunua. Labour has plans to invest in more electric trains. I will press the government hard to implement these plans which will ease pressure on the roads and make commuting to work a much less stressful experience, not to mention reducing carbon emissions.”

ebecca Rose, deputy principal of Brookby School was pleasantly surprised when she was informed she’d won the Auckland Region Favourite Teacher Award. Primary school student Miles Wilson nominated her for the award saying ever since he’s moved into Room 5, he doesn’t like to miss a since day at school, “because then I miss Mrs Rose. The nomination went through a panel of people that included New Zealand celebrities as well as educators who selected Mrs Rose as the overall regional winner. The Favourite Teacher Award was open to any sector in education from kindergarten right through to university. Students the length and breadth of the country were asked to nominate their favourite teacher. “Learning with Mrs Rose is all about having fun and that’s why she is everyone’s favourite teacher,” says nine-year-old Miles. A former resident of Howick, Mrs Rose who studied at Owairoa Primary School, says she still fondly remembers one of the teachers, Mrs Bull, who inspired her. The technology teacher is known to respond to the kids’ emails 24/7. “They open up and talk to me about any problems they may have or something they are finding hard. As I do with their parents, I send an email out every week to the parents/ caregivers in my class that goes over what we do each week in class and reminders that are coming up. “I also put up videos and photos every week of the kids doing something fun in the class tennis this week, it was speeches last week, plays, all sorts onto an app called Seesaw where the parents are able to receive a notification and see what their kids are doing then and there. “It’s so great to be able to have a really strong home-
school partnership,” says the award-winning teacher who has taught for 12 years out of which six years have been at Brookby School. As for her biggest reward, she says: “The glimmer in their eyes when you see that they have ‘got it’ and the sense of pride in their learning when they make a breakthrough in their learning is the biggest reward. “There has not been a day in my career where I haven’t smiled or laughed with the kids,” she says. “The kids keep you young. The energy they bring into your life is contagious and I can honestly say that I love every single day in my job. Brookby is such a special school, the community is so welcoming and friendly. “We have had times where a family has been in hardship and the rest of the community rallies together and helps without batting an eyelid. I feel like the lucky one being able to work in that environment every day, blessed beyond words.”

P for Botany Jami-Lee Ross has spoken out in defence of his involvement in the 2016 local government elections, saying he would “absolutely” do it again. A $100,000 Botany by-election was forced when former Howick Local Board member Lucy Schwaner, who is married to Ross, walked out of the inauguration ceremony after losing her bid for chairperson to David Collings by 5 votes to 4. Two of the board’s members stood at the ceremony and declared they had been bullied and approached to vote for Schwaner. Shortly after Schwaner’s dramatic exit, her resignation letter was sent to media, citing no confidence in Collings as leader. At the Meet the Candidates evening at East City Wesleyan Church on Monday evening, a pointed question was directed to Ross. “Reflecting on the difficulties of your involvement in recent local government electioneering, do you think it was wise for a member of parliament to be so involved in local government election matters? Any regrets and learnings?” the question said.

Democracy does cost money. That Howick Local Board needs a lot of work to change it and work it out but my wife made a decision she felt was in the best interest of the community to walk away from what was a particularly nasty situation on that board. “I hope the public look at that board more at the next local body election. Would I support my wife again? Absolutely.”

Dogs poisoned at local park ■■By Therese Henkin
A
devastated dog owner is warning others to be careful after her dogs were poisoned at Eastern Beach’s Macleans Park. Shirley McNaught rushed her two labradors to Buckland’s Beach Vet Clinic last Tuesday afternoon just hours after they went for a walk at Macleans Park. McNaught says her 3-year-old black lab Archie started vomiting less than two hours after going for a swim in one of the streams at the park. He deteriorated quickly suffering from seizures, vomiting and tremors. McNaught’s other dog Hine suffered similar symptoms after being caught eating Archie’s vomit. The dogs were placed on a drip and administered medication in an effort to save their lives. While Archie improved, Hine was rushed to Manukau After Hours Vet Clinic (MAHVC) to be monitored overnight. The dogs are now home safely. The vet bill was almost $2000, which the pensioner says has put a huge strain on her financially. McNaught says she is very disappointed with Auckland Council’s slow action following the incident. “When the vets were trying to get information on any bait that had been laid or spraying that had been done, it took two hours to get a response back from council. My dogs could have easily died in the meantime,” she says. “I don’t think the council are taking this seriously. The council aren’t monitoring what’s going on in our parks. They pass them off to contractors, but who’s actually checking that the parks are safe?” Niki Hotter, a staff member at MAHVC, says Hine was one of three dogs that have presented at the clinic with these symptoms in the last few weeks after being walked in Macleans Park. Hotter says all three dogs developed tremors and life-threatening seizures only hours after walking in the park near the flying fox.
The vets treating the dogs suspect blue-green algae toxicity is the cause of the poisoning. MAHVC has been in contact with council which confirmed no bait had been laid down in recent months and no spraying had been done recently. Local resident Vicki Williamson said on Monday she saw a sign warning dog owners about the poisonings near the flying fox. She said that when she contacted Auckland Council about the notice she was told “it would be removed as it didn’t have approval to be posted on council property. “I said then I was notifying council that there is a problem with dogs being poisoned and asked if she would please let the notice remain. I was told contractors would be there soon and they would be removing the notice,” she says. Simon Randall, the council’s acting head of operational management and maintenance says Watercare was sent to investigate. “They have been to the site and can confirm there are no issues or overflows from the wastewater network. They have also sampled the water and confirm there is no indication of wastewater present in the waterway,” he says. “There is a large residential catchment above the stream so there is always a risk that pollution may be tipped from a private drain. This could be a one-off.” Randall says blue-green algae, which can affect people, livestock and pets that swim in and drink from algae-contaminated water, is unlikely at this time of year given the weather conditions. However on Monday a specialist from council’s Healthy Waters team looked for potential algal blooms. Results from the lab have not yet been released to the Times. “The council would not be proactive with warnings at this stage until we knew what we were dealing with, if anything. In the meantime, we urge dog owners to report any illnesses to their vet,” he says.

A proud display at historical village L
ew Duffet was truly moved when he heard that the Howick and Districts Historical Society were going to honour the memory of his favourite horse Logan by installing a beautiful fibreglass horse with a carriage at the village. Lew and Logan were a familiar sight for over 10 years as they would happily trot down Church Street and round the pond, back up to Logan’s hitching post by the Courthouse. “Logan was no ordinary horse and never put a foot wrong,” says 78-year-old long standing volunteer who has been associated with the historic village since the last 17 years. The former engineer still vis-
its the village on Wednesdays to restore old wagons and custom designed carts. Lew, an avid horse trekker bought Logan from the sets of Xena: Warrior Princess in the year 2000. “He was a friend to me and in the mornings when I stepped out, it was like he always wished me good morning with a whinny.” Sadly at the age of 18, Logan developed a tumour in his throat and passed away on April 4, 2014.
Though Lew owned Logan’s sister Fleur, things were never the same. However, with this thoughtful gesture Lew is thrilled that Logan now lives on forever in the hearts of all those who had known him or will get to hear about him at the village. Visitors to the village will get an opportunity to get dressed in costume and have their photograph taken sitting on the buggy as a photo memento.

Kang cleared of bribery T
he Electoral Commission has cleared Maori Party candidate Wetex Kang of a bribery allega-
tion. Maori party president Tukoroirangi Morgan accused the New Zealand Herald “beefed up” on its front page last week. “Today’s (Tuesday’s) decision by the commission confirms what I said last week – that Wetex is the victim of a smear campaign led by a troublemaker angry that he didn’t want her as his campaign manager. And a reporter at the Herald who let himself be fooled and manipulated by her,” said Mr Morgan. Mr Kang, who is contesting the Botany electorate, said the smear campaign was “down-right nasty and vicious”. “My family has been affected in ways I cannot describe. My business has been affected because of the nature of the allegation. And this attack could have ended my campaign,” said Mr Kang. “I’ve been disadvantaged once as an Asian and twice as a Maori Party candidate.” Chief Electoral Officer Alicia Wright said in a letter to Mr Kang on Tuesday that the commission was satisfied that he had not given any money directly or indirectly to induce an elector to vote for him and therefore had not committed the offence of bribery under sec-

Change in house price expectations P
roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church says the latest Institute poll points to a sea change in sentiment about house prices. According to the regular poll, which is commissioned by the Institute, the number of people expecting house prices to rise in the next six months is down to 30 per cent – the lowest level since the poll started in November last year and well down on the June result of 43 per cent. Mr Church says a definite trend is now clear.
“When we started this data series in November last year, the number of New Zealanders expecting house prices to increase in the next six months outstripped the number of people expecting prices to flatline by a huge margin. “But our August poll, shows the number of people now expecting house prices to rise, is dwarfed by those expecting property prices to stay the same”. Mr Church says that those who are expecting ‘no change’ in prices have jumped from 28 per cent, in November last
year, to 45 per cent, in August – while those expecting property price increases have nearly halved from 56 per cent to 30 per cent. However, Mr Church says that, while the change in poll results is dramatic, it doesn’t reflect widespread panic about house prices falling. “The expectation of a decrease in prices has risen from a low of 8 per cent in November – but it’s still only at 17 per cent – which suggests that people haven’t bought into the hype about a ‘correction’”.

Sopoaga deserves start ■■By Ivan Agnew
A
gainst a fast moving, in-your-face defence, I believe Lima Sopoaga and Ryan Crotty would form a better All Blacks combination than Beauden Barrett and Sonny Bill Williams. While only a fool would argue against Steve Hansen’s 89 per cent success record as New Zealand coach, the Barrett/Williams combo has struggled this season against Argentina and the British and Irish Lions. Individually, both have special gifts with Barrett’s brilliance earning him the International Player of the Year award last year, just as Dan Carter did culminating with the All Blacks 2015 World Cup triumph. Interestingly, Carter’s World Cup success justified the loyalty shown him by selectors Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox in the face of critics who claimed he was well past his used-by date. Hansen has always put great store by experience and Carter delivered with a masterly, allround performance when it counted most. Blessed with greater speed and try-scoring habit, Barrett is a sharper attacker than Carter. But he lacks his superb tactical nous and ability to put team-mates

into gaps with a perfectly timed draw and pass. Consequently, Barrett and his team struggled against Argentina before Sopoaga (pictured) came to the rescue to slot into first-five and guide the All Blacks to a 39-22 win with a composed performance. Success for Fencibles girls Fencibles 11th Grade Girls football team is on its way to the top. Coach Stewart Taylor says the girls have been dominating their age group for a number of years, winning the Auckland Football Federation Championship for tenth grade last year so convincingly that they decided to skip playing 11th grade and play them up to 12th grade this season. “This meant for a lot of the girls who were still only 10 and 11 years old they were playing against 12 and 13 year old girls, “said Taylor. “They played the first round of grading for 12th grade which consisted of around 26 teams, which were to be split into 1st, 2nd and 3rd division. “Our girls were put into the 12th grade 1st division going on to finish the championship in 4th place against some really strong teams and clubs, this was a fantastic achievement as a lot of clubs do not like to play kids teams up a grade.” The team is currently training for their end of season trip to a national football tournament in Taupo on October 13 and 14.

housands of people will take part in the Sydney Marathon this month – but two local men are doing it with a point of difference. Brothers-in-law, Steve Millar and Phil Moon are heading across the ditch to take part in this year’s half marathon event – but it will be no ordinary race. On April 16 2016 – aged just 40 – Steve suffered an extremely rare medical event, leaving him paralysed on the right side of his body and with limited verbal communication although he remains fully present in understanding what is going on in conversations. Steve’s wife, Tina recalls the events of that day like it was yesterday. “Steve was out on a job at work when he started to feel unwell. He phoned his dispatcher but what Steve was saying and what the dispatcher was hearing were two completely different things.” Thanks to GPS tracking in Steve’s vehicle, the dispatcher was able to send an ambu-
lance to Steve’s aid who had fallen unconscious. He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital and into a six-hour surgery where it was revealed he had suffered an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). An AVM occurs when a tangle of blood vessels in the brain – or on its surface bypasses normal brain tissue and directly diverts blood from the arteries to the veins – essentially causing a bleed on the brain. AVMs are thought to occur in less than one per cent of the general population. Steve was put into an induced coma for 2-3 days to help reduce the swelling on his brain. “It was scary,” recalled Tina. “He was on life support machines, his head was bandaged up, there was tubes and bits everywhere.” As Steve slowly progressed, he was transferred from ICU to the critical care unit before being transferred to Middlemore Hospital where he spent the next seven months. After finally arriving home on January 4 2017, brother-
in-law Phil was struck by a brainwave. “[Coming home from hospital is] obviously a really big adjustment. After a period of time you get into a routine and it’s a little bit like groundhog day, going from bed to lounge, bed to lounge,” he said. “Steve was always pretty active – [he’d] take his mountain bike to Woodhill [forest], go fishing. He doesn’t like sitting still for long. “I’m quite active myself… and I sort of thought ‘why does this have to be it? Why can’t we do something?’ “The original idea was to do the Auckland Marathon,” said Phil. “I asked Steve if he was keen and he lit up like a bloody Christmas tree.” But after discovering the Auckland Marathon didn’t allow wheel chairs, it was back to the drawing board. After some more research, they settled on Sydney. It’s been far from an easy process – in fact the beginning was “continual dead ends,” said Phil. But as word spread, offers of help began flooding in.
Disability sports organisation ParaFed donated a retired Paralympics wheelchair that an engineer in Hamilton helped to modify to Steve’s needs. The result is a nifty little contraption- Steve drives with his feet and controls the brakes while Phil pushes it from behind. The pair trains frequently – both in the chair and at the gym where Steve has become something of a local celebrity. Despite the seemingly never-ending roadblocks, Steve and Phil – and the huge support crew behind them – refuse to give up.. “The nicest thing is this whole journey and that Steve has something to look forward to. Life doesn’t have to be about sitting in a lounge and a bedroom and every time Steve gets in that chair - he’s an expert in steering it - he just lights up. “It’s neat to have that one thing everyone can share in. Steve really enjoys it – he doesn’t seem to care if it’s raining. I say ‘no we can’t go, it’s raining’ and he says ‘well why not?’ That quip earns a cheeky
