Pakuranga – For services to sport Mr Graeme Steel is Chief Executive of Drug Free Sport New Zealand and is a worldrenowned expert on antidoping. Mr Steel was integral in forming the New Zealand Sports Drug Agency, which took over the New Zealand Olympic Committee’s antidoping programme as an independent body in 1994, and was appointed Executive Director. The organisation became Drug Free Sport New Zealand with specific responsibilities to implement the World Anti-Doping Code in 2006 and he has continued as Chief Executive since that time. He has been involved in all areas of anti-doping, including developing and administering testing and education programmes. In the mid-1990s he was part of the team which developed the International Standard for Doping Control, from which the current International Standard for Testing was drawn. He was seconded to the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games to assist in the oversight of the Doping Control Programme. He has served on World AntiDoping Agency Independent Observer Panels at a range of large international sporting events, including chairing the panel for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Mr Steel was President of the Association of National Anti-Doping Organisations and has been New Zealand’s representative for Oceania on the WADA Executive Committee.
Ray Kenway Haffenden – MNZM
Howick – For services to rugby league Mr Ray Haffenden is a former rugby league player who coached the New Zealand Junior Kiwis from 1989 to 1990 and managed the Kiwis, New Zealand’s national men’s
rugby league team from 1990 to 1995. Mr Haffenden was elected to the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) Board in 1992, serving until 1995. He was re-elected to the Board and took over as Chairman in 2007, subsequently overseeing the changes that occurred following the SPARC review of NZRL in 2009. He was Vice Chairman of NZRL from 2006 to 2016. He served on the judiciary for Bartercard Cup games and the NZRL judiciary panel. He was a national selector and convenor from 1992 to 1995, a Junior Kiwis selector from 1986 to 1990 and is a Life Member of the Linwood Rugby League Club in Christchurch and of NZRL. He is currently Chairman of the NZRL Kiwis Association, President of the NZRL Southern Zone, and Vice Chairman of the NZRL Museum Committee. As a player he played for the Linwood Keas in the Canterbury Rugby League competition as well as a number of games for Canterbury and as a representative for the South Island against Great Britain in 1974. Mr Haffenden also coached Canterbury in 1982 and from 1984 to 1988 as well as the South Island representative team during this time. ➤➤AWARDS: New Zealander of the Year Local Hero Award 2014
John Roy-Wojciechowski – MNZM Howick – For services to the Polish community and philanthropy Mr John Roy-Wojciechowski has been a founding member of the Auckland, Wellington, and New Zealand Polish Associations. Mr Roy-Wojciechowski was the Honorary Consul in Auckland for Poland from 1998 to 2013. He has been involved with a range of community organisations in Howick and sponsored sports clubs. He helped to provide equipment to the Howick Sailing Club, sailed one of the first Lasers in New Zealand with them, and was later made Club Patron. He has worked with Howick Rotary Club’s Showcase
Awards, sponsoring the Employee of the Year Award. In 2004 he funded the establishment of the Polish Heritage Trust Museum in Howick. He has served on the Committee of Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish and has driven fundraising initiatives for extensions to the school buildings, the construction of a new library, and sponsored the stained-glass windows installed in the church. He was Board Chairman for the northern region of the Life Education Trust, during which time he led fundraising efforts to increase the number of mobile classrooms and helped the charity reach 245,000 primary and intermediate school children. Mr Roy-Wojciechowski was a founding member and is now a Life Member of the Otago Heritage Trust. ➤➤HONOURS AND AWARDS: Officers Cross of the Order of Merit, Republic of Poland
Fraser McDonald Faulknor – QSM
Pakuranga Heights – For services to children, education and music Mr Fraser Faulknor has had a background in teaching, music and the care of vulnerable young people and was Director of the Dingwall Trust’s Care Programme from 1979 to 2000. Mr Faulknor navigated considerable change within the social welfare system during this period, including registering Dingwall as a Child and Family Support Service in 1989, allowing Dingwall to be made legally responsible for some children not covered by Child, Youth and Family Services, and for these placements to be government funded. Many children benefitted from this mandate, which continues to this day. Other beneficial initiatives he introduced to Dingwall included visiting social workers, the decentralisation of Dingwall into individual houses, a boarding school programme and the Dingwall School to fill gaps in children’s learning to help them return to mainstream schools. He coordinated the

Howick – For services to theatre and youth Ms Gair McRae has taught drama to the children and youth of Huntly, Maraetai, St Heliers, Bucklands Beach, and Howick for more than 50 years. Ms McRae established the Huntly Children’s Theatre in 1962 as a young primary school teacher. She then started teaching drama from her Howick home and at the Howick Little Theatre Youth group. In 1969 she established the Bucklands Beach Children’s Theatre. Her belief in the importance of providing children with quality performance experiences often saw her self-fund props, running costs and hall hire. She later established Uxbridge Children’s and Youth Theatre, which became the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre (HCYT) when she secured council-owned premises for it to operate from. She is a Life Member of HCYT and has taught thousands of children over the years. More than 500 students aged between five and 21 years attend HCYT classes each week and Ms McRae remains involved in teaching these classes.

Kids voting reaches 100,000

ore school students than ever before are running their own mock elections this September through the Electoral Commission’s Kids Voting programme. Around 100,000 students from 541 schools are already registered for Kids Voting and more schools are expected to sign up before the General Election in September. That compares with 78,000 students from 556 schools at the last General Election in 2014. Local primary and intermediate schools taking the lead are Owairoa Primary School, Willowbank School, Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Cockle Bay School, Ormiston Primary, Somerville Intermediate and Howick Intermediate. Howick College and Edgewater College have also registered their interest. Alan McIntyre, principal Owairoa Primary School says that they have registered for the Kids Voting programme and will be undertaking the mock voting for 554 students from Years 3-6. Yolande Franke, principal Howick Intermediate says: “We have registered for Kids Voting. This will become more of a focus early in Term 3. “I’m hoping to get a young politician along to school to give the students an authentic experience,” she adds.

David Ellery, principal Somerville Intermediate confirms they have around 500 students participating this year. Chief electoral officer, Alicia Wright says: “The high number of early registrations shows schools are keen to give their students an opportunity to learn about the electoral process.” Kids Voting provides schools with the resources needed for students to run a mock election. Students learn about and vote for real candidates and parties and then compare the results with the outcome of the General Election. “It’s a practical way to show students how our electoral system works,” says Ms Wright. “It helps them understand the process and get ready to vote when they turn 18.

“Voting is a lifelong habit. The earlier young people start to vote, the more likely they are to keep voting,” says Ms Wright. “That’s why civic education is so important and the reason why we have developed Kids Voting and curriculum aligned teaching units for schools.” Kids Voting can be run on a small or large scale, from one to two classes to the whole school. “It’s great fun for students and teachers, and some schools go all out. Over the years we’ve seen some schools hosting candidate debates for their electorate, and others forming student branches of political parties and developing their own campaign material,” says Ms Wright. ➤➤Schools can sign up for Kids Voting at www.kidsvoting.co.nz
The recent terror attacks in the UK have left many on tenterhooks and wondering just who will be next. As it emerged that ISIS has claimed responsibility for a hostage incident in Melbourne on Monday night, it may feel slightly too close to home for some in New Zealand. However, Defence Minister Mark Mitchell says we shouldn’t let fear affect how we live our lives. Mr Mitchell, who was in the area to campaign alongside National Party candidate for Pakuranga Simeon Brown, recently returned from the Defeat ISIS Conference in Copenhagen where he met with fellow Defence Ministers from 12 nations in the Global Coalition to defeat the extremist group. Speaking to the Times at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, Mr Mitchell said New Zealand had “outstanding security services” and that our defence forces were doing a “tremendous job in Iraq” as part of the wider coalition taking the war to ISIS. “I’d hate to see us change our lives because we’re worried about what’s happening with ISIS.” However, he acknowledged we are not immune to such attacks and New Zealand plays an

important role in the fight. “One thing we do acknowledge is this is a global issue, and although we’re a small country we trade with the rest of the world, Kiwis love travel and there’s Kiwis living in all parts of the world so we should have commitment to taking this problem further and try to fix it as part of this wider coalition,” he said. The Minister is confident in the progress New Zealand troops are making overseas – he says troops in Taji on a joint mission with Australia have trained 22,000 Iraqi security forces and helped liberate around 60,000sqkm of territory. But he knows the fight’s not over. “It’s going to take continued commitment and resolve to make sure that we destroy ISIS.”

airy owner Don Kumar lives in fear. He is not alone. The prospect of an aggravated robbery is the number one concern for dairy and gas station owners around east Auckland. This month, police are making additional efforts to crack down on those who benefit most from the crime. New Zealand Police have launched a nationwide campaign for the month of June targeting those responsible for receiving and dealing in stolen property from aggravated robberies. In partnership with Crimestoppers, police will be offering a reward for any information that leads to a successful prosecution as part of the campaign There’s Nothing Good about Stolen Goods. It follows a chain of aggravated robberies across some New Zealand communities, including right here in east Auckland where a recent attack on Big Johns Dairy in Pakuranga left the store owner in hospital suffering from serious facial injuries. Police commissioner Mike Bush said the month-long campaign is part of an intentional response by police to a rise in the number of violent robberies. “NZ Police are deeply concerned about the rise in this violent crime – due to its significant impact on small business owners and their workers and communities. The
local dairy owners, but has also had a significant impact on gas stations in the area. In December last year, aggravated robberies were carried out across four service stations in Pakuranga within a week, targeting cigarettes and cash at Caltex, Gull and Z stations. Z spokesperson Georgina Ball confirmed the majority of the 27 robberies and five attempted robberies that took place in 2016 across New Zealand were in Auckland. She said the company is currently in the process of installing 50 highsecurity steel tobacco dispensing machines in Z stations across Auckland as a means of deterring would-be offenders, among other preventative measures including fog cannons, bollards, safe rooms for staff and high definition CCTV systems. “Anything that puts our sites in danger we take very seriously. Our staff need to feel safe.” National MP for Botany Jami-Lee Ross has also commented on the issue. He told the Times National is committed to “remaining tough on criminals and putting victims at the heart of the justice system”. “Nobody should feel unsafe at work. I really feel for these owners and Police are currently doing some extra work around this.” ➤➤The Crimestoppers campaign and associated reward offer will initially run until the end of June. He worries “the whole day and night” about what potential offenders could carry out. “In the past, they used to do it at night, but now it happens anytime, in the daytime even... and sometimes its physical harm – that leaves a physical scar that stays with you for the rest of your life. “The cops have come around and talked to us dairy owners, and I like that. You feel like there’s someone who backs you that’s just a phone call away.” At the family-owned Whiteacres Superette in Pakuranga, owner Hitesh Raman has suffered two ram raids on his store and believes more needs to be done to make offenders liable for their actions before the situation will change. “Once they’re liable for their actions it will change. They should be paying toward the damage they’ve done to the shop from whatever source of income they have. [When it happens] we have to close our shop... we lose a lot [and] we end up paying the cost, not them. “They’ll beat us up before they even take anything. Why are we getting beaten up when we’re doing a legit business? That’s how all the dairy owners feel.” It’s a problem that hasn’t just hit

Funding announced to help prevent violent robberies P
Over the past three months, police officers in Auckland have visited more than 1000 businesses to discuss their concerns and provide prevention advice, as well as carrying out crime prevention seminars and increasing the number of officers in high-risk areas. “We’ve listened to the concerns of shopkeepers, that’s why we’ve put aside this money to be used for co-funding for a range of security and prevention measures,” said Mrs Bennett. “We’re taking this issue
seriously. We want to stop these awful crimes from happening to innocent victims in the first place and make sure these cowards are off the streets.” This funding follows the start of ‘There’s nothing good about stolen goods’ – a monthlong police campaign this June targeting businesses or individuals receiving stolen property from robberies. Rewards have been offered through Crimestoppers for those who provide information which leads to a successful prosecution.

olice minister Paula Bennett has announced that $1.8 million will be made available for robbery prevention at dairies, superettes and small local businesses. Businesses assessed as being at high risk of violent robberies will have the opportunity to apply for co-funding to support the purchase of panic and high volume interior alarms, DNA spray, fog cannons and time safes, she said. The money comes from the Justice Sector Fund and will be aimed specifically at small family or individually-owned businesses at risk that require financial assistance to install better security measures. “Police will fund up to 50 per cent of the cost of the security measures. In some exceptional circumstances, they may pay a larger share. It’s expected all of the 500-600 businesses considered high risk will be eligible for co-funding.” Shop owners will also be offered advice on how altering the layout of their store could make them feel safer.

From scrap metal to upmarket homeware ■■By Nathan Morton Young aspiring businessmen and women are being put to the test in this year’s Young Enterprise Scheme and Pakuranga College is one of many schools showcasing the skills of their Year 13 students. The scheme allows upcoming entrepreneurs to start up and run their own companies, create real business and marketing plans, pitch for investment to a panel of judges and make real profit or loss. Nine Pakuranga College teams are taking part in the competition, making business opportunities out of fitness, gadgets, home decor and clothing and giving students the chance to enhance their skills in the marketplace. ScrapCycle is one of the teams taking part, made up of five Year 13 students with a business plan to recycle metal wastage from bikes into designer, industrial-style homewares.
The first items in their range to go into production are clocks and bottle openers, which they hope will appeal to cycling enthusiasts as well as people with an eye for something a bit different. The group recently reached an agreement with a number of local bicycle stores, who have agreed to supply them with old bicycle parts otherwise destined for the landfill. CEO Rishad Manecksha said it’s a “win-win” situation for the group, made up of students Kelvin Mao, Barrett Caton, Josh Tayag and Eason Zhang. The 17-year-old entrepreneur was recently given the opportunity, along with Kelvin, to immerse themselves in the world of business by attending Massey University’s Business Boot Camp. The pair were chosen as two of the top 70 business students nationwide to attend, and Rishad went on to be awarded ‘Most Likely to Succeed’ at the event.

This winter, Howick Dance Studio presents The Little Mermaid in an outstanding performance you don’t want to miss. It’s the first time the studio has performed the hit since 12 years ago, said studio manager Sharon Barber. The Little Mermaid tells the riveting fairytale story of a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and live in eternity. Choreography started back in December 2016 in preparation for the shows, held at the Hawkins Theatre in Papakura from July 1-2. It’s a massive commitment, said Mrs Barber, with volunteers putting together the costumes, rehearsals
every Saturday and around 150 students involved, but she’s been impressed so far and is thoroughly looking forward to seeing it all come together. Katie Heaven, who plays Ariel in the production, said she is most excited about the opportunity to “make the character her own”. The 16-year-old has been attending Howick Dance Studio since she was five, and is now involved in a number of programmes including choreography and contemporary. or the second year running, Mission Heights Junior College beat almost 850 schools to win the Social Studies challenge in the Education Perfect World Series. The Education Perfect Social Studies Competition involves completing modules on a range of geography, history and social studies topics. Through the module completion, students compete by answering questions in an online competition to earn points. All events contribute towards school and student totals for the overall World Series. “Overall, the school earned 119,949 points, nearly 17,000 points more than the second place school,” says Catherine Hunter, organiser of Academic Competitions at Mission Heights Junior College. “One of our Year 9s was 14th overall in the competition, earning a staggering 4706 points

Kids dig deep for local reserve Council provided these for us.” Somerville Intermediate, Howick College and the Pegasus unit from Pakuranga College have planted kowhai and other specimen trees among pioneer species planted in previous years. “These pioneer species provide shelter for the more tender young canopy trees which should provide a wonderful show of colour when in flower in years to come,” Ms Barclay says. All the plants used for restoration in the reserve are eco-sourced (collected from mature plants within the Mangemangeroa Reserve) and grown in various specially built units in the local community. Funding from Howick Local Board helps with the purchase of materials in which to grow these seedlings. Each year between 5000 and 8000 seedlings are grown and planted into the reserve. “On Saturday June 10 our first public planting day will be held. If you would like to be involved, please meet at the white barn, Somerville Road at 9am,” says Ms Barclay. “The following weekend Saturday June 17 is our second planting day, again meeting at the barn for a 9am start. “Please wear suitable footwear and warm clothing. There will be a limited number of spades available.”

estoring of the native vegetation in the Mangemangeroa Reserve has been an ongoing activity since the start of this century. Schools have been involved since 2006. This year the first planting occurred on Thursday afternoon with Buckland Beach Intermediate planting more than 200 flax in difficult ground below the barn. These outings form part of the curriculum activities and give students the opportunity to be involved in “hands on restoration” and an appreciation of how difficult it can be to dig a hole in knee-high vegetation. The flax planted by BBI was specifically chosen so that when fully grown, will not block the view from the seat, donated by Rotary, just above it. “On Friday Cockle Bay students were the second group planting in the reserve,” says Sally Barclay, a member of the Friends of Mangemangeroa Society. They planted mahoe and each plant needed a plant protector made from core flute to reduce pukeko attack and frost damage. “As well, these students placed a core mat around the plant to reduce weed competition and reduce moisture loss during the hot summer conditions,” she says. “We have been most fortunate as the

Changes to Auckland’s water and wastewater charges We’d like to let you know that the amount you pay for water and wastewater services will change from 1 July 2017. The adjustment is necessary to cover increased service delivery costs and the need to invest in new and existing infrastructure to cater for Auckland’s growing population. All of the money we receive from you goes into operating, maintaining and expanding our infrastructure. We do not receive any additional funding from Auckland Council or the government, nor do we pay a dividend to Auckland Council.
