Where community shapes the heart of your retirement Not one for letting the grass grow under her feet, Judith has always enjoyed being active. That certainly hasn’t changed since moving into her independent apartment at Bert Sutcliffe Retirement Village, in Birkenhead. “The opportunities here to try new things, are endless,” she says.” I joined the Tai Chi group which I really love. I’ve also taken up bowls which I’m also really enjoying. There’s a lot of camaraderie on the bowling green - it’s a lot of fun! Judith also explores Auckland with the Bert Sutcliffe walking group. “I look forward to going somewhere different every week. Occasionally we walk locally, but mostly we go out into Auckland and see all sorts of different places, and go on wonderful bush walks. However, it’s the group’s social interaction that is most important to Judith. “The companionship is great, it’s a huge benefit – there’s always laughter and never a dull moment!”
KC14294
She says people love being in the walking group, “We make time to talk, look at the scenery and gardens: to ‘stop and smell the roses’.” At the end of their walks, the group usually find themselves at a local café. “We talk about where we’ve been – it’s our wind-down time and we all enjoy it.”
“The companionship is great, it’s a huge benefit – there’s always laughter and never a dull moment!” Residents, like Judith, love the village environment and they feel connected to their neighbours and friends. Ryman villages provide the setting where community spirit thrives.

A matter of trust By Nick Krause
A
s customers, we can be horrible. We are demanding. We want service immediately, our standards are extremely high (we’re paying right?), We are busy and we know best. The companies and individuals with whom we do business – the discerning ones at any rate – know this, or ought to know this. Refuting this fundamental acceptance - that our customers have certain expectations - is foolish. And it doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about shoes, a replacement window, servicing for the car or a sandwich at your local cafe or bakery, we want the best experience. If the price is competitive, that’s a bonus. The equation is actually quite simple. We seek goods or services, we Google (or use social media) said services and, if we’re lucky, someone will recommend a cobbler or stylist or restaurant or dressmaker. And it’s not all bad. Anecdotally, we know from social media sites which businesses or specialists people gravitate towards. They talk up the best fish and chip shop or handyman or dog groomer. We trust these recommendations. There’s ground zero. Trust. If my online community sings the praises of a vendor,
It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about shoes, a replacement window, servicing the car or a sandwich at your local cafe or bakery, we want the best experience. we’re more than happy to check them out. We buy. Trade has thrived like this for a millennia. Heaven forbid though if a customer experience is a shocker. The internet wields such power. We all know what a scathing review can do. It can be like biffing an ember onto bone-dry kindling. We’ve witnessed it. One voice can multiply at a terrifying rate and, like an out-of-control bush fire, can decimate a business. The retailer or service provider stands to lose so much, most particularly trust. Without trust the game is lost, as customers will take flight without the slightest hesitation. They will also take with them their friends, family and their cash. But smart operators needn’t despair. As quickly as the customer can turn on them, the customer can also be placated. Trust can be re-established as you will read in some our feature articles in this publication.
Even the most demanding of customers will accept that mistakes are made. The key as a business is to accept the wrong and make it right. Immediately. This takes us onto another tack. Clever retail or service operators cannot be one dimensional. Businesses need to really understand what drives their customers. What makes them buy? In most cases, it’s not only about price or performance, says Business Link UK. “Ask existing customers what they like about doing business with you. And asking potential customers what they look for in their buying decisions can also give you useful information to help develop your business – and your brand.” As you’ll read in the following pages, your brand represents the whole customer experience. “You should regularly review your customers’ experiences of your business,” Business Link says. I really like part of a blog by chief marketing officer Joanna Lord who exhorts:
“Don’t just talk; do!” “After you’ve promised people something, it’s important to deliver on that promise. Your brand is very much dependent on following through, whether it’s shown through great products, great service, great customer communications, or otherwise. “You must make sure that brand promise is consistently delivered so it’s believed; only then will it be shared on your behalf.” To stand out in the vast sea of competition, your businesses, brands need to truly impress. “We can’t just be flashy or have a memorable logo; we need to stand for something that drives people to support us. To put it simply: the more successful your brand, the easier it will be to build loyalty around that brand. A successful brand takes a great deal of intention when building.” I’ll buy that.

Most trusted brand? It’s Whittaker’s I
conic New Zealand chocolate brand, Whittaker’s, has made Reader’s Digest history, winning its coveted Most Trusted of all Brands Survey title for eight consecutive years. Reader’s Digest’S 2019 NZ Most Trusted Brands results showed Whittaker’s again emerging the superstar. Not only has the company won Most Trusted Brand of All brands surveyed for numerous years, it has also been confectionery category winner every year since 2011 as well as the winner of the NZ Iconic Brand accolade since 2013. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Trusted Brands survey and Reader’s Digest Australasian editor-in-chief Louise Waterson says the milestone marks a perfect time to acknowledge brands that have won the trust of New Zealanders over the past two decades. “Whittaker’s consecutive winning result as Most Trusted Brand of All Brands surveyed sets a new benchmark. Eight consecutive years is an amazing result and unprecedented across Australasia,” she says. She acknowledges other New Zealand companies that have also been on the podium for many consecutive years. “Only the very best of brands can manage this. It speaks highly of how genuine, authentic, reliable and consistent they are.” Examples include Dettol, Healtheries and AA Insurance that are nine-time winners in their respective categories;
Resene is an eight-time winner. Similarly, Harcourts has been a winner for all seven years its category has been included in the survey, and Ryman Health Care has scored top place five years out of six in its sector. St John New Zealand, GJ Gardner, Yates, Schwarzkopf, Panadol, Sleepyhead, AMI, Cavalier Bremworth and Lockwood are examples of other repeated winners. Like Whittaker’s, some brands score more than one award each year, with Fisher & Paykel a case in point – cleaning up the Laundry Appliance, Large Kitchen Appliances and Cooking Appliances categories. Also being celebrated are the new names in amongst this year’s winners. Toyota Signature Class took the top spot in the second hand/used car sales category,
followed by Turners; Selleys impressed in the world of glues and construction adhesives, while Campbell’s Real Stock is the most trusted cooking stock. The annual Reader’s Digest survey has grown over the years to now include 68 categories of products and services, reflecting a broad range of industries. The full results can be found on www.readersdigest.co.nz. Those who scored in the top 20 highest ranking brands – in order of rating - this year are as follows:

on Johnson, now 87 years old and owner of the company, is still going strong after 50 years of running the business and competing in World Masters Athletes competitions in various countries having won gold medals in the javelin, polevault, decathlon, pentathlon, steeplechase and hurdles. Ron commenced selling real estate in the 1960’s in a small Pakuranga office which comprised of two salespeople and eventually a receptionist, Pauline Abbott, who is still with the company!!! After finally taking over the ownership, he immediately converted the office from three desks to 20 work stations, the first real estate office to do so! In those days salespeople usually only serviced the local area and eventually he decided to open up a new office in Howick before finally opening the largest ‘flagship’ office in Botany Town Centre.

Notable graves part of Heritage Festival tours
P
urewa Cemetery is taking part in the Auckland Council’s Auckland Heritage Festival for the first time next month. On Sunday, October 6 from 1-4pm, Purewa will host four different tours of notable people who helped found Auckland and contributed to its heritage. The theme for this year’s festival is Journeys – the stories of how our people travelled to Tamaki Makaurau by sea, air or land, to create a shared future together. More than 55,000 men, women and children have been laid to rest at Purewa since it was established by the Anglican Church in 1889. To date, more than 280 ‘notable’ graves have been identified as having made a significant contribution in many different walks of life, to Auckland’s early development and history. Research is continuing to extend this list. The four tours will focus on different areas such as Business/Entrepreneurs, Arts/Education, Church/Medical/Military and Civic/Politics/Sport. Each tour will visit ten graves and be led by an historian. Tours leave at 1.15, 1.30, 1.45 and 2pm from the St John’s Lounge, where afternoon tea will be available between 2pm-3.30pm. For more information contact sue@friendsofpurewa.co.nz or Kathy at kpcg@xtra.co.nz
New functional and aesthetically designed building Purewa Cemetery and Crematorium recently opened a new architecturallydesigned administration building nearly doubling the size of the previous offices. The 170 square metre project has a brick and cedar wood exterior and inside, the high-ceiling atrium-like entrance allows plenty of natural light. A feature is a wooden ceiling which is dual purpose – providing excellent acoustics and an attractive natural timber patterned effect. Separate offices and meeting rooms provide more space and privacy for staff and visitors. A special feature is a family quiet room where grieving families including the parents of still-born and new born babies, can meet staff in private. Local eastern suburbs funeral directors, State of Grace East, have taken particular interest in the room helping Purewa set it up and furnish it appropriately. Purewa general manager Alastair Crombie says one of the key features of

a more comfortable and personal environment for visitors,” he says. The building was officially opened by the Anglican Bishop of Auckland, the Right Reverend Ross Bay. This year Purewa celebrates 130 years of serving the people of the eastern suburbs.

Give the gift of forward planning
U
nderstanding what it means to be part of a tightly knit community is very much part of Richard Madders’ modus operandi as the new branch manager of Davis Funerals in Pakuranga. Growing up in Herefordshire – a small village on the Welsh border in the UK – Richard first applied himself in sales roles until one day a company he was calling on – which happened to be next door to a funeral home – planted a seed. They said he ought to consider funeral directing as a career option. Richard says, “That particular client thought I had the right manner and attributes for the role, but I felt I was too young and too inexperienced at the time”. Only in his late 30s did Richard take the advice given all those years ago in his small hometown to become a funeral director. Already eight years in New Zealand – Richard and his wife have settled into Auckland and have made a home in the local Howick area. When asked what Richard thought about funeral directing prior to his making it a career path he says, “I had always known about the industry. My wife’s family runs a funeral home in my hometown but I did not realise how important a farewell actually is to families and communities
until I became a funeral director four years ago. Since the dawn of time, humans have been holding ceremonies bidding farewell to their loved ones. If we miss this step on the grief journey, it can really affect us. It is very important to be able to say goodbye in a safe environment.” Prompted about the qualities he brings to the Pakuranga branch of Davis Funerals, Richard says that he is first and foremost a “people-person” and, that having worked in numerous customer facing roles, is a champion for great customer service. Richard goes on further to say that he is able to quickly build rapport with the families he interacts with and that he is a good listener – all qualities which are integral to the role he plays at Davis Funerals. In so far as myth busting stereotypes within the industry is concerned, Richard says that those working at Davis Funerals are “normal, approachable people who lead normal lives” beyond working hours. To reinforce his statement and to serve as an example, he candidly says, “I am just a bloke who is 42 but feels like I am still 21, still popping wheelies on my mountain bike. “I enjoy taking my dog for a walk with my wife in the evenings and enjoy taking holidays – just like everyone else. We
Proudly caring for East Auckland families -
are not The Addams Family. I am also passionate about photography and since I have taken over at Pakuranga, we have started to work on putting together a photography competition to showcase the area, which we will display in our Pakuranga branch.” On a more serious note – Richard did highlight the importance of educating the community about what is on offer from Davis Funerals to better help families through an emotional and inevitable time. Richard says that many are not aware of the pre-planning service on offer where individuals can plan or prearrange for their funeral wishes to be realised when the time comes. He states that he has seen firsthand the relief families experience when there is no confusion or doubt about what a recently deceased family member wanted as part of their funeral plan. He says it avoids questions like: “What did mum want for her funeral?” Not to mention the anxiety and emotional turmoil unanswered questions like these can add to an already highly charged and sensitive time for the loved ones remaining and grieving.” Davis Funerals offers this and much more. Richard did say that the best way to learn more is to pop in for a visit and
Richard Madders have a chat over tea, coffee and biscuits. He admits that he is a bit “old-school” that way but believes it is important to connect personally with families considering Davis Funerals for when the time comes. He quickly learnt that you are only as good as your word and has supported that philosophy throughout his life. The integrity of his business is his most valuable asset, and finds it difficult to imagine doing business in an environment where trust wasn’t valued—would clients be able to leave their precious jewellery and heirlooms to be repaired and maintained if they were concerned about their care and protection? David Fels Jewellers is a “full service” business with an onsite workshop offering remodelling of clients jewellery that needs updating or remaking into a contemporary style, repairs and servicing of jewellery and watches, and they also stock a variety of jewellery, gifts and watches for sale. They will clean your jewellery free of charge and check to ensure that the gems are secure. This can often be done while you wait. The much trusted jewellers clean your jewellery free of charge and will check it to ensure that the gems are secure. This can often be done while you wait.
David has been running his business in Howick for over thirty years, firstly in Howickville Mall (now The Terraces), and moved to the main street in 1999. There have been many changes in the area over that time but his commitment to offering great service to clients and their jewellery has been unwavering, and is now seeing the second and third generations of clients that they started with many years ago. Insurance work is another service that is offered – whether it’s a valuation to ensure that your precious items are sufficiently covered, after loss estimations if you have suffered a loss, or replacement of jewellery to settle a claim. In recent times David Fels Jewellers have been purchasing old or broken jewellery for cash or as a ‘trade-in’. This has proved popular with many clients when they find the cost to remodel outdated or broken jewellery isn’t justified. Unsurprisingly, he believes in giving back to the community he has lived in for his whole life. He is a member of the Howick Rotary Club, being a director of the club on a number of occasions, and is a Trustee for the club’s Charitable Trust. Currently his shop is a collection depot for the club’s Annual Book Sale on October 9-12. David Fels Jeweller 53 Picton St, Howick | Ph: 09 537 2347 David.Fels.Jeweller@gmail.com
in brands that take a stance By Joanna Carter
W
e all know that trusting a brand increases the chances of a customer buying from it. Building trust turns customers into advocates, providing priceless word-ofmouth marketing. On top of this, brand trust means customers keep coming back, which is hugely beneficial considering the fact that customer retention is cheaper than acquisition. But exactly what does brand trust mean to customers and how can it impact their decision making? Today, brand trust is everything to customers, meaning that once you’ve lost it, you’ve likely lost them. This alone shows the importance of brand trust, however, there are more factors that need to be taken into account if you want more customers to put their trust in your business.
Trust-driven purchases
It goes without saying that when presented with a brand, a customer has experience with and trust in, along with
a new brand, that customer will go with the one they know. This is because they expect that brand to deliver, both in terms of service and product. While the new brand may be comparable in every way, that trust gives the customer more trust in their purchase. Even if a customer has heard of a brand and it seems to have a good reputation, it isn’t enough to turn them into a repeat customer. The research shows that 67 per cent of customers say that a good reputation may get them to try a product, but they will stop buying it if they don’t come to trust the company behind the product. On top of this, brands are now expected to take a larger role in society, with this helping to further customer trust. The figures show that 64 per cent of consumers are belief-driven buyers, which is up by 13 points in 2017. In fact, this is the same percentage as in 2018, showing that buying based on belief is the new norm. These buyers will switch, choose, Continued pg 15

Why is brand trust becoming more important?
For customers, trust in brands is more important than ever, which means this should be the same case for businesses. After all, addressing customer concerns will help enable you to deliver the expected level of service and deal with any customer pain points. For 62 per cent of customers, there are growing concerns about product experience that need to be addressed. This includes issues around the pace of innovation and the increasing reliance customers have in terms of brands automating their lives. In addition, customers can’t afford a bad purchase, so they need to trust in the brand, the product and the service.
Brands need to make a difference With so much at stake, exactly what can brands do to help improve the trust that customers have in them? According to the research, showing a commitment to society can make a huge difference, especially when you factor in belief-driven buyers. Some 53 per cent of consumers say that every brand has a responsibility to get involved in at least one social issue that doesn’t directly impact its business.
However, to do this, a brand has to show that it honestly cares about this issue and is not simply jumping on the bandwagon. In fact, when brands earn full trust (product, customers and society), the benefits for those brands triple.

From pg 14 avoid or even boycott a brand based entirely on its stance on social issues. This means that you need to provide more than a great product to win them over and can lose them with just one small slip up. Brand trust now embodies the impact a brand has on society, as well as the product and customer experience it offers.
Carol Rigby, Accountant
What can brands do?
With consumers being so focused on the societal impact that brands can make, you need to act on your values and promises. While creating a marketing campaign around a societal issue may get you noticed, it won’t do any good if other aspects of your business don’t support the same beliefs. You also need to take into account the fact that 74 per cent of consumers use one or more advertising avoidance strategies, such as ad-blocking, changing their media habits or paying for streaming services. This means that it isn’t the campaign that gets you noticed, it’s the stories around you living up to your promises. In fact, 76 per cent of consumers that trust a brand fully will pay attention to its advertising and communications compared to the 48 per cent of those who do not fully trust the same brand.

Final thoughts
While a great marketing campaign may make an impression, a brand that shows it cares will make a difference. Brand trust is now about more than providing great products, delivering on time and providing exceptional customer service. Consumers want to support brands which care and prove that they do. Resident and ratepayer groups were ecstatic after commissioners last month refused resource consent to build a 71-unit residential development in Cockle Bay however, one month on, the applicant – property developer Box Property Ltd – has decided to contest the decision and has lodged an appeal with the Environment Court
T
he property developer seeking to construct 71 apartments on land zoned for nine single houses on Sandspit Road has now appealed to the Environment Court against the decision to refuse his application for building consent. His original application was opposed by 14 local residents, and by the Howick Local Board. Many more local residents opposed the Sandspit Road development but were not permitted to be included in the Hearings. The original application by Box Limited was for a so-called Integrated Residential Development.. Using this definition, the apartments
could be constructed in a single house zone. Hearings on the application took place over two days and were followed by an opportunity for the developer to respond to the issues raised by the residents. Key statements in the judgment now being challenged was that the application was non-compliant with the definition of an Integrated Residential Development; that it was contrary to the objectives and policies of the Auckland Unitary Plan; and that there were impacts on amenity value because of its bulk, length and scale. Traffic and environmental concerns were also con-
sidered. Selwyn Pratt, one of the concerned residents, said: “The developer quotes no less than 34 objections to the Independent Hearings Commissioners decisions. Our view is that the original decisions by the expert Commissioners were entirely correct. We cannot believe they made this number of errors in their judgement. “But Auckland Council, and therefore ratepayers, will now have to invest significant funds to cover the cost of the appeal, as will local residents.” Another resident, Fiona Moran, said: “It is disappointing that having
presented our detailed and evidencebased submissions at the hearings and having our conclusions accepted, we now have all the uncertainty, stress and additional costs that will be necessary to support council to defend the very well-argued decisions made by the independent hearings commissioners.” Laurie Slee, chairperson of the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association, said they would be keenly awaiting the outcome of the appeal. “The development application, the decision, and the appeal should be of interest to all Auckland residents. ➤ Turn to Page 11

A recent survey shows that while public trust in institutions may be falling, trust in experts remains high. The Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) survey, held across Australia and New Zealand, shows technical experts such as doctors are trusted by 88 per cent of New Zealand respondents, followed by engineers (84 per cent) and accountants (75 per cent). In contrast, political parties are the least trusted institution, trusted by only 29 per cent of New Zealanders. Peter Vial, New Zealand country head of CA ANZ, said that, while trust in institutions was falling, trust in experts and specialists, such as accountants, remains high. “Trust in experts is a constant. An explanation could be that experts are seen as objective – they speak from their expertise rather than from an ideological or selfserving position,” said Vial. He said this may help explain why accountants have retained trust against a backdrop of issues in the financial sector. In January the Financial Markets Authority and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand issued an unfavourable report on aspects of the conduct and culture in the life insurance industry. The two regulators also issued a report at the end of 2018 identifying “significant weaknesses” in
the governance and management of bank conduct risks. The trust ratings are based on a survey commissioned by CA ANZ and designed to generate a deeper understanding of trust in institutions and professions. The least trusted institutions among the 16 groups included in the CA ANZ survey are political parties at 29 per cent, followed by religious institutions at 37 per cent and by the news media at 43 per cent. Another key report finding is that the shift towards increased use of technology to communicate is not damaging trust in professional services, but the accompanying move away from face-to-face contact is. “As we move towards more electronic communication, professionals must not neglect more traditional ways of maintaining relationships, such as meeting people and getting on the phone,” Vial said. Other key report findings include: • In general, New Zealand has higher levels of trust in professionals than Australia • High levels of trust have significant benefits for businesses and professionals • The importance of communicating a commitment to honesty and ethical behaviour • Dishonesty and a lack of ethical behaviour are most likely to decrease trust.

Wines, craft beer and fine spirits
W
e are completely and utterly devoted to good taste, whether it’s wine, food, craft beer, whisky, rum... We firmly believe that eating and drinking well is an essential part of a life well lived and also that it’s possible on almost any budget. You just have to know where to look. Fine Wine Delivery’s first office space was the spare bedroom of Jeff and Virginia Poole’s Torbay home back in 1997. Following their dream and passion for great wine, Jeff and the family have built Fine Wine Delivery into one of NZ’s largest liquor retailers across two Super Stores and a fantastic website! The business has always been based on passion, knowledge and absolute dedication to selling great beverages at the best prices possible. If we wouldn’t drink it ourselves, we won’t serve it to our customers - it’s as simple as that. What started as being all about wine has now expanded to include craft beer and premium spirits too – we even have 10 boutique beers fresh on tap! Always finding ways to deliver the best beer
as fresh as possible, we started using Crowlers®. A food grade can seal that locks in the freshness so tap beer can be shipped around the country and kept fresh for up to two weeks. It also has a resealable lid so you don’t have to drink the full 946mls all in one go. Seal it up and put it back in the fridge for another night. And at the end of this outstanding fresh beer experience you can remove the label and put it in your recycling bin. No more single use plastic here! And as well as tap beers we also boast one of NZ’s largest selections of bottled and pack beer. The New Zealand palate is becoming more sophisticated and we’re proud to be at the front line of the war on bad taste. It’s a battle we fight every day on your behalf and we never leave a man behind! Across all products, our expert tasting panel tastes over 5,000 products a year from all around the world, rejecting more than half of them for quality or value reasons. We Taste, Rate & Guarantee all the products we stock, and we write a comprehensive tasting note for all of them. Always innovating, we powered our

O
steoporosis affects approximately 50 per cent of women and 33 per cent of men over 60 years
of age. Reducing your risk of osteoporosis by strengthening your bones can be achieved through maintaining physical activity, ensuring a good intake of Vitamin D and calcium in your diet and by not smoking. Vitamin D helps increase the absorption of calcium from the food in your diet. Some foods rich in Vitamin D include: cheese, egg yolks, tuna, salmon, mackerel and beef liver. Exposing yourself to sunlight as little as 15 minutes three times a week can also assist with the manufacture of Vitamin D within your body. Some calcium rich foods include: almonds, seeds, yoghurt. Sardines, canned salmon, beans, lentils, edamame and low-fat milk. Incorporating physical activity into your daily routine with weight-bearing aerobic activities can help slow bone loss. Bone formation is stimulated by activities that put stress on bones to stimulate bone-forming cells and the laying down of calcium. This results in stronger bones that are more dense. If you are affected by osteoporosis, there are various treatments available. If

rmiston Specialist Centre is home to the country’s leading surgical experts. Dr Hassan Mubark is the latest addition to the centre offering his break-through Expanded Stem Cell Therapy to patients. Dr Mubark is part of ReGen Cellular which is the only company in NZ offering Expanded Stem Cell therapy. Expanded Stem Cell Therapy is a procedure where a patient’s own stem cells are harvested from abdominal fat, then grown in a laboratory to be later reinjected back into the patient’s own body. The purpose of this is to replicate, heal and regrow soft tissue – namely cartilage that has been eroded or depleted. Among his patients is Owen Franks, Dr Mubark recently treated the All Black prop in order to overcome a shoulder injury. Franks chose expanded stem cell therapy to avoid surgery – resulting in six months out of the game. Ormiston surgeons took stem cells from Franks abdominal fat and sent them to ReGen’s specialist lab in Queenstown to expand. Dr Mubark explained; “I used around a hundred million stem cells in order to get the best shot.” After receiving the treatment Franks reported a rapid recovery which saw him back to training within a month and reselected for the Crusaders in time to finish the super rugby season within six weeks. Dr Mubark is now taking patient appointments at the Ormiston Specialist Centre located in the Ormiston Hospital complex. Not limited to athletes, the

outhern Cross Partners Investments Southern Cross Partners is a leading provider of peer to peer mortgages and investment in New Zealand. Peer to peer lending is a way of bringing borrowers and investors together. We lend funds to borrowers with property as security and offer that first mortgage security to investors to invest in. A key feature of our product is that we lend our own money first to borrowers, before offering investors an opportunity to invest in the mortgage. So all loans offered on our on-line platform we have initially funded ourselves. But the biggest feature is how investors’ funds are supported by a registered first mortgage over property. This ‘Bricks & Mortar’ model has attracted many investors who like the mortgage security we provide as part of our peer to peer investments. At Southern Cross Partners we have been in business since 1997 providing short term, mortgage finance to property owners throughout New Zealand. We have had years of experience vetting borrowers
and analysing applications to ensure we lend prudent levels against sufficient security to the right borrowers. We then offer these mortgages to investors to partake in with rates with rates starting from 5.40 percent p.a. (subject to change) and minimum investment $10,000.00 (subject to availability). The investor gets a competitive return, with a first mortgage registered over the borrower’s property, held on their behalf by our Nominee Company. [Like all investments, there are risks and we take proactive steps to achieve the best results possible for our investors.] To find out more about us drop in and see us at 16 Selwyn Rd, Howick, visit www.southerncrosspartners.co.nz or call 0800 00 58 43.
*Southern Cross Partners is a licensed peer to peer lender under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013. Armstrong: We have complete faith in Classic Builders Experience Experience
“
We see this home as an investment it’s an opportunity to set us up long term.” Sensible words from banker, Matt Armstrong. He, along with wife Celeste and three children, recently moved into their new home. Spanning over 34 metres end to end, it sits on a generously proportioned lifestyle block, just south of Auckland. Finding something big enough, in the right area and at the right price that they actually liked just wasn’t possible with buying an existing house. “Buying just wasn’t an option” explains Matt, “building has allowed us to choose what we want, how we want it and with plenty of space.” Their 331m2 home has a lot to offer, including five bedrooms and an office. The open plan kitchen, dining and large living space is a family favourite. “We’d always dreamed of a property like this one. We used to throw our gumboots in the car and head out to look at sections. One day we were traipsing around someone’s land when a real estate agent spotted us. We told him we were only dreaming but he guided us to this lot and from there on, it all started to come together.” Celeste was initially nervous about going down the building route. “We were cautious about building because we’ve built before. Our previous experience was a nightmare and there was just no trust in our builder. But building with Classic Builders was a completely different story.” Matt agrees, “Right at the start, they said they’d do the right thing by us. If we discussed something we wanted, they’d make it happen - we had complete faith.” Many assume Classic Builders, will only work within certain areas of New Zealand. With this notion in mind, Matt and Celeste weren’t sure their ideas would be a consideration. It came as a pleasant surprise, to know Classic Builders were able to lead the project. “They knew what we were after, while
really respecting our limits throughout the entire process,” says Matt. “Their commitment, time, effort and honesty reiterated Classics Builder’s credibility. If we had questions or wanted to look at possible variations throughout the build, these were openly discussed,” says Celeste. “It was reassuring to be involved in the process.” Matt and Celeste’s eye for detail and vision for their family abode is evident throughout the home. Matt explains, “We put in a large slider to divide off an area for the kids. It’s a great option when everyone wants to be together, while still allowing a little of our own space. And that’s the best bit – the space. We can now cater for visitors and our families when we all come together.” The kitchen splashback might lead you to believe this is a farming family. They’re not. Celeste is a fan of Cambridge artist Chrissy Taylor. Celeste worked with Chrissy to arrange a selection of boldly painted farm animals, framing the culinary workspace. “I wanted something bright and a bit different, but block colour wouldn’t have looked right. I’ve always admired Chrissy’s pieces, and loved the idea of having a bit of a barnyard theme,” she says. Celeste loves that the area surrounding the house has an abundance of green which offers a blank canvas to create memorable family moments for years to come. “We haven’t really decided what we are going to do out there, but with winter now behind us, we’re likely to give it a bit more focus. The land size is really just for the kids - our last house had a big deck area but no grass, so this time, we had to have grass.” Matt adds saying, “This is our home. We designed it to be our home - and it works.” Classic Builders, phone 021 197 2183 www.classicbuilders.co.nz

Putting the Signature on your home! When considering building a new home there are numerous options to weigh up – location, size, features, lifestyle and many design elements. That’s where Signature Homes Botany and Manukau can make the whole process easy.
S
30 years, Signature Homes has found some elements of a quality home are universal. If you’re on a tight budget or have an easy site to work with, it’s worth looking at Signature Homes’ collection of predesigned plans. The two collections, Smart and Pacific, contain a comprehensive range of affordable plans which provide practical modern homes which are exceptional value for money.
ignature Homes has been designing and building homes for East and South Aucklanders since 1983, with the Botany & Manukau branch being run by Allan and Jennie Moore. The couple has a long history in the building industry and are passionate about offering quality, personalised service to ensure you get Your Home, Your Way. “We offer a variety of services depending on where you are in the building journey. These range from full design and build to house and land packages and even a knock down and rebuild service,” Allan says. Local team members are experts in the Auckland Unitary Plan and have a streamlined subdividing service to manage the entire process of subdividing a property and building a new home, saving clients time and money.
Design & Build:
With three in-house architectural designers plus fantastic new home consultants, estimators, interior designers and project managers, Signature Homes Botany & Manukau specialises in ‘design & build’ homes, specifically created to suit clients’ section, interests and lifestyle. If you’re wanting something particular in a home, which is difficult to find in an existing house or in a predesigned plan (such as a downstairs suite for granny or a home to fit a sloping or tricky section), Signature Homes’ design and build service will cater to your needs for less than the cost of engaging an architect. Being a full-service company, the team is with clients all the way, from taking dreams and putting them on paper right through to handing over the keys on settlement day. www.times.co.nz
Knock Down & Rebuild:
“After clients have met and discussed their ideas with a new home consultant, our architectural designers work with them to create a home that suits their site, budget and requirements. “Our project managers then take care of them, and the build, from start to finish, managing the consents and sub trades to ensure each new home is built on time and on budget. We also offer exceptional building guarantees.”
House & Land Packages and Rowan Estate:
If you’re keen to build a new home but don’t have a section, Signature Homes’ house and land packages are a great option, taking a section of land and matching it to a suitable home design with a fixed price
and the flexibility to add personal design touches inside and out. Importantly, Signature Homes Botany & Manukau is the only build company working in Rowan Estate, a smartly-priced new Flat Bush development with a range of house and land packages. “All Rowan Estate sites represent great value for money,” says Allan. “Being close to amazing facilities, shopping, schools, effective transport links and the fantastic Barry Curtis Park, it offers an enviable lifestyle. “Signature Homes was selected as the exclusive build partner due to the high quality of homes we build as well as the comprehensive building guarantees we offer.”
Build from a Plan:
Having built quality homes for more than
Love where you live, but not the house you’re living in? A ‘knock down and rebuild’ maybe the answer. This option costs less than one might think and maybe less costly than major renovations. For those curious about what they can do with their section, Signature Homes Botany & Manukau will meet onsite and talk through choices including finance plans, at no cost.
Subdividing:
Subdividing a property can potentially offer financial rewards. If you have a section you want to subdivide and build a new home on, Signature Homes Botany & Manukau’s team of experts can guide you through the process.
Wherever you are in your building journey, Signature Homes Botany & Manukau can help. Contact Allan and the team today on 0800 102 109, visit signature.co.nz or email allanmoore@signature.co.nz.

Newest Toyota store opens N
ew Zealand’s newest Toyota store opened at Botany recently and is already proving to be a bustling destination for locals. Part of the country’s largest Toyota dealership, Manukau Toyota Group, Botany Toyota enjoys a prime location on the corner of busy Te Irirangi and Accent Drives and a purpose-built setting including showroom, customer lounge with all the expected amenities, offices, underground carpark, carwash and stateof-the-art workshop where customers can watch their vehicles being attended to through floor to ceiling viewing panes. Store Manager, Liam Keatley, says the goal is to make both the car-buying and car servicing experience as stress-free as possible. “We appreciate our customers have
BEFORE
busy lives and the key for us is to make them feel at home whether they are waiting for their vehicle to be serviced, chatting with one of our sales team or waiting for finance papers to be finalised. It’s about delivering a comfortable and enjoyable experience from when they first come in the doors to when they leave.” To that end, the customer lounge is nestled into a rectangular glass-walled office suite that runs almost the length of the showroom. Open to both sides of the showroom, the area somehow manages to be both easily accessible and private at the same time with plenty of comfy seating (arranged so that different groups using the area at the same time can still have their own space), loads of magazines, a box of toys for the kids and a tv. Tea, a coffee machine and filtered water
are nearby, and there is a work island for those who want to either perch or stand and carry on their work day while they wait. Customers quite often take the opportunity for a power nap and Keatley laughs there is no judgement. “We often have to wake people up … it doesn’t seem to matter whether they have been waiting for 20 minutes or an hour and 20 minutes … it is a nice little oasis of calm and it’s good to see customers are comfortable enough to nod off!” The store is open for vehicle sales seven days a week with the parts, service and Bridgestone Tyre team working Mondays to Saturdays. Another aspect of the new store was the importance of having staff reflect the Botany community.
“We absolutely consider ourselves part of the community … the team here speak a range of languages including Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Samoan, Sri Lankan, Fijian, Afrikaans and a few more besides and it feels good to know that when customers come in and prefer to discuss their options in their first language, we can accommodate them. It’s just another way we can make people feel comfortable. “We enjoy what we do here and I think it shows, we have had some great feedback from customers and we have sold and serviced a lot of cars in a very short time and we look forward to being around for a good long time!” Botany Toyota Corner Te Irirangi and Accent Drives Phone: 273 3110

Latest used car safety ratings shows best vehicles for protection The AA is well-trusted by Kiwis so when they offer commentary on new safety ratings to help used car buyers make safe choices, we should really take notice
N
ew Used Car Safety Ratings have been published this month to help Kiwi motorists know which vehicles will provide good protection to occupants and other road users if they’re involved in a crash. The 2019 ratings assess the relative safety of 389 popular used vehicles, ranging from light cars to large SUVs and commercial utes and vans. They are based on records from more than 8.3 million vehicles in police-reported road crashes and more than 2 million injured road users in New Zealand and Australia between 1987 and 2017 being analysed by the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) in Australia. Of the 300 vehicle models manufactured from 1998 to 2017 included in the ratings, 69 were allocated a 5-star rating with 22 of these awarded ‘Safer Pick’ status, which included the requirement for both electronic stability control (ESC) and reversing sensors or a reversing camera, among other criteria. A further 57 vehicles were given a good 4-star rating, while 52 were rated
It is possible to buy a safe and affordable second-hand vehicle, with some of the ‘Safer Pick’ 5-star vehicles. Photo AA a marginal 3 stars, 56 were given a poor 2-star rating and 66 were given a very poor 1-star rating. AA Motoring Services general manager Stella Stocks says the ratings are a vital guide for anyone in the market for a used vehicle. “On average, a vehicle given a 1-star Used Car Safety Rating is around twice as
likely to cause death or serious injury to a driver in a crash compared to a 5-star rated vehicle. “It is possible to buy a safe and affordable second-hand vehicle, with some of the ‘Safer Pick’ 5-star vehicles, which provide the best possible injury protection to all road users, available for less than $10,000,” says Stocks. The new ratings include 2017 crash data for the first time, which has resulted in a number of previously rated vehicles receiving a lower star rating this year due to their rating being further from the new standard. “The average safety of the fleet improves year on year as newer vehicles are added so the ratings for older vehicles become worse over time in comparison,” Stocks says. “This can help motorists decide when they can make significant gains in safety by updating to a newer, safer vehicle.” Light and small car classes, and small SUVs, had the highest proportion of poor and very poor performing vehicles. “Unfortunately we encounter a lot of members looking to buy a used vehicle and
What is trust? T
rust is both and emotional and logical act. Emotionally, it is where you expose your vulnerabilities to people, but believing they will not take advantage of your openness. Logically, it is where you have assessed the probabilities of gain and loss, calculating expected utility based on hard performance data, and concluded that the person in question will behave in a predictable manner. In practice, trust is a bit of both. I trust you because I have experienced your trustworthiness and because I have faith in human nature. We feel trust. Emotions associated with trust include companionship, friendship, love, agreement, relaxation, comfort. There are a number of different ways we can define trust. Here are the dimensions of trust and consequent definitions
Predictability
It is a normal part of the human condition to be constantly forecasting ahead. We build internal models of the world based both on our experiences and what others tell us, and then use these to guess what will happen next. This allows us to spot and prepare for threats and also make plans to achieve our longer-term goals. The greatest unpredictability is at 50 per cent; a reliable enemy can be preferable to an unpredictable friend, as at least we know where we are with them. Definition 1: Trust means being able to www.times.co.nz

predict what other people will do and what situations will occur. If we can surround ourselves with people we trust, then we can create a safe present and an even better future.
successfully, I must be able to trust that such agonies will not come to pass. Definition 4: Trust means enabling other people to take advantage of your vulnerabilities—but expecting that they will not do this.
Value exchange
Most of what we do with other people is based around exchange, which is the basis for all businesses as well as simple relationships. At its simplest, it is exchange of goods. I will swap you two sheep for one cow. It is easy to calculate the value in such material bargaining. Things get more complex when less tangible forces come into play. A parent exchanges attention for love. A company exchanges not only pay but good working conditions for the intellectual and manual efforts of its workforce. Value exchange works because we each value things differently. If I have a whole flock of sheep but no milk, then I can do business with a person who has a herd of cows but no clothes. This principle of reciprocity is what binds societies together. Trust in value exchange occurs when we do not know fully whether what we are receiving is what we expect. When we buy a car, don’t want to be sold a ringer which the seller knows is faulty. Definition 2: Trust means making an exchange with someone when you do not have full knowledge about them, their intent and the things they are offering to you.
the list of priorities tend to be reliability, fuel efficient, cheap to run and maintain. Safety seems to be at the bottom or not mentioned on the list at all,” says Stocks. “We would recommend those looking to buy a vehicle to put safety first and buy the safest vehicle their budget allows. If there is no ANCAP rating (NZ new) or UCSR listed, then consider the ‘must haves’ (ABS, stability control, multiple airbags, parking sensors/cameras etc) and find cars with those. “Another important factor in obtaining the UCSR ratings is that a vehicle must have at least 100 police reported crashes and at least 20 driver injuries reported before it is included in the ratings analysis. “And to actually get a rating assigned and published it takes around 300 crashes to have enough data to maintain a high level of accuracy,” says Stock.
Delayed reciprocity
Exposed vulnerabilities When we trust other people, we may not only be giving them something in hope of getting something else back in the future, we may also be exposing ourselves in a way that they can take advantage of our vulnerabilities. If I buy a car from you and I do not know a good price, you can lie to me so you get a better bargain. If I tell you in confidence about the problems I am having with work, you could use this to further your own career at my expense. Although the threat of retribution or projected feelings of guilt can counteract your temptation to abuse my exposed vulnerabilities, if you succumb I still get hurt and may still end up with the shorter stick. For our transaction to complete
Exchange is not just about an immediate swapping of cows and sheep or hugs and kisses. What makes companies and societies really work is that something is given now, but the return is paid back some time in the future. The advantage of this is that we can create a more flexible environment, where you can get what you need when you need it, rather than having to save up for it. Trust now becomes particularly important, because otherwise we are giving something for nothing. The delay we have placed in the reciprocal arrangement adds a high level of uncertainty which we need to mitigate through trust. What is often called the ‘golden rule’ is a simple formula for creating trust. ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ It sets up the dynamic for my giving you something now with the hope of getting back some unspecified thing in the indeterminate future. Definition 3: Trust means giving something now with an expectation that it will be repaid, possibly in some unspecified way at some unspecified time in the future. Courtesy changingminds.org

t Southern Autos they pride themselves on providing the best motoring experience possible and they’re happy to say we’re celebrating five years of putting smiles on our customers’ faces. Located on the corner of Great South Road and Bakerfield Place in Manukau, Southern Autos have represented Isuzu, Peugeot and Citroen since opening in August 2014 while recently adding Suzuki to their stable. Dealer Principal Andrew Craw puts Southern Autos success in the past five years down to putting the customers’ needs first. “It’s truly great to see local customers in our dealership doing business with us, whether they’re buying a New or Used vehicle or they’re being served by our Parts and Service team. We are very pleased to announce that in January 2020 we will open a second dealership at 271 Botany Road,” says Mr Craw. Southern Autos Botany will represent Peugeot, Citroen and Suzuki from a sales point of view and have service and parts facilities for all of its brands including Isuzu. “It is an exciting time as we continue to grow the Southern Autos brand and open the opportunity for other areas of Auckland to experience our great service,” he says. “We work hard to ensure our customers receive the best ownership experience. Business is simple, look after your
employees and your employees will look after your customers. “We believe this is why we are the number one Peugeot and Citroen dealership in the country for customer satisfaction and also rank very high with Suzuki.” Read below two of the dealership’s most recent reviews… “Earlier this year we turned our thoughts towards changing cars and felt a small SUV type vehicle might suit us better. After allowing us to briefly look about at our own pace, we were warmly approached and greeted by Southern Autos Manukau employee, Cynthia Lee. Cynthia was not pushy and we appreci-

The Big Fish – prized local catch
T
he Big Fish has been in business for over 20 years. It was started by owner, Phil Appleyard, (a Buckland’s Beach resident) and the large wellstocked shop has built up a solid reputation for its comprehensive range of top stock – and its affordable prices. Phil has been in the industry for around 40 years, starting off in commercial and now recreational. The shop is well-known for having key local fishing knowledge, with all staff being keen anglers. “We offer a wide range of baits, professional reel and rod repairs as well as a huge range of tackle for all types of fishing” explains Tegan Goldsmith, who has worked at the shop for the past 2 years and goes fishing whenever she can. “We’re all into our fishing at The Big Fish, each of us has a favourite method, including soft baiting, slow jigging or bait fishing, so that helps us give customers great tips and tricks.” Paul Emerson is in charge of the reel repairs, which are done in store, originally being taught by Phil. Paul joined the Big Fish team three years ago now, but has been in the industry for over 15 years. He brought with him a wealth of knowledge on fishing gear, reel and rod repairs, as well as years of experience fishing for snapper, kingfish, marlin and much more. Tegan is the buyer for the shop and is also an expert rod-builder. She can build a rod from scratch and also does repair work for customers.
Phil Appleyard, Tegan Goldsmith, Abigail Downes, Paul Emerson. Yet another new addition to the team is Abigail Downes; who is mad keen on her diving and fishing, and more often than not, out dives all those around her! Two other part-time staff members, Ben Appleyard and Baxter Emerson are also both keen fishermen and work during the busy season. The Big Fish has a fishing club, which was launched about the time the shop opened and now has about 200 members. The club, which meets monthly and also organises competitions and other events, is affiliated to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. New members are always welcomed along to share fishing information, know-how and possible stories about the “one that got away.” Some very impressive fish specimens, who obviously didn’t get away, have been moulded into very impressive fibreglass moulds to decorate the walls of the
shop. There’s also a photo-board with an impressive line-up of photographs of fishing success stories. The fishing side of the shop covers a huge range of equipment. This year sees them stocking a new and exciting range of New Zealand made Kilwell rods, which are (of course) of the highest quality. The Big Fish is also expanding its game fishing range, in rods, reels and game lures. They also stock a selection of smokers, ICEY TEK chilly bins, charts, buoyancy aids (lifejackets) clothing and much more. Within the same building, is the dive section, which is also now owned by Phil Appleyard. Every member of The Big Fish team are fully licenced scuba tank fillers, with a boat load of knowledge for where to get a feed of scallops and cray fish (which they may disclose if you catch them on a good day). They are also the only store in East Auckland that test tanks and service
dive equipment in-store. “We supply everything you could possibly need for snorkelling, diving or spear-fishing. It’s a very nice and friendly local business with a real variety of stock and good prices. Anything we don’t have, we can usually have it in store within a day or two if needed,” Tegan says. The Big Fish team have reported recent catches of Southern Bluefin Tuna by Big Fish fishing club members and local game fishermen. These Tuna are the best they have encountered in the three years they’ve been targeting them. Snapper fishing is also superb at the moment with the water temperature consistently above average for this time of year. These fish are in feeding mode, so it’s a great time of the year to go out and catch some fresh fish for the family. And remember 1st of September is the start of the scallop season so come in and get your scuba gear and dive tanks tested and ready for the start of the season. Fishing has become a very familyoriented activity with many of the regular customers at The Big Fish now introducing their children to the pleasure of the hours of fishing off their boats or local wharves, rocks, and beaches. Good luck for the oncoming season from the team here at The Big Fish. The Big Fish 141 Cascades Road, Pakuranga. Phone: 576 2764
