Coweta County supporters of Donald Trump give a collective thumbs up before boarding a bus wrapped with Trump signs leaving Atlanta for Washington, D.C., just before the new president’s scheduled inaugural lunch. “We’ve just got to have a change,” said Anita Royal.
Donald J. Trump was inaugurated as the nation’s 45th president last week, and Cowetans were among the throngs watching history being made. A group of 14 Coweta residents were among about 50 people who took Trump campaign buses from Atlanta to Washington. Anita Royal, who helped set up the Trump campaign headquarters in Newnan last year, said the five buses were “the coaches that we had at the rally” on Madison Street. Before leaving, Royal said she was excited to be in Washington for Trump’s inauguration. “He is going to change the world or at least change our world, I hope. We’ve just got to have a change,” she said. “He’s what we need right now. This is his time, and

Abercrombie retires after 30-plus years By REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com Kelly Abercrombie, who helped win recognition for scores of athletes and volunteers who were honored by Georgia Special Olympics for their achievements during her 30-plus years as coordinator of the local program, found herself on the other side of the podium recently when she was named the state’s Outstanding Local Coordinator. During her tenure as Coweta County Special Olympics coordinator and recreational therapist for Coweta schools, Abercrombie – who retired in December – headed a program that expanded to include hundreds of athletes representing virtually every Coweta County
school. She added teams in sports ranging from cheerleading to swimming to cycling who became capable of competing on the state and national level. “If you say Coweta County Special Olympics, the first name that comes to mind is Kelly Abercrombie,” said Jay Jones, chairman of the Coweta County Special Olympics Board. “Her name is synonymous with Special Olympics. She knows all the athletes by name, knows all their families by name. She knows them inside and out, even their medical history. She went on every single trip they had while she was local coordinator.”

“The Legacy Continues” as the annual Friends of Wadsworth Concert returns March 11 to Charles Wadsworth Auditorium. Soprano Courtenay “Becky” Budd, a Newnan native, will return as host of the event, which will feature both new and familiar faces. The series carries on the tradition of the spring concerts made popular by world-renowned pianist and Newnanite Charles Wadsworth, founding director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York City. For two decades, Charles Wadsworth brought world-class talent from the classical music scene to perform in his hometown. Early Wadsworth and Friends concerts helped raise funds to renovate the 1939 art deco auditorium and outfit it with technical and acoustical enhancements. The city of Newnan honored Wadsworth by naming the performance hall in his honor. Budd has hosted the “Friends of Wadsworth” series for the past several years, continuing Charles Wadsworth’s legacy. This year’s concert, a favorite of the Coweta arts community, once again will be filled with world-class performers not to be missed, according to 2017 concert co-chairs Phyllis Graham and Kim Wright of Newnan Cultural Arts Commission. “The evening will be magical, filled with music that will awe and inspire,” Graham said. Joining Budd will be soprano Indra Thomas, clarinetist Narek Arutyunian, violinist Soovin Kim, cellist Sang-Eun Lee and pianist Andrew
