Welcome to our July magazine. With the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and the World Cup capturing attention this month, the excitement is building for sports fans across the area. We’re loving seeing the tennis-themed window displays popping up throughout the Village, the town centre and Southfields, while big screens, Pimm’s and strawberries are all bringing fun summer vibes. Sport not your thing? There’s still plenty to enjoy. July is packed with fantastic events, from Creative Youth’s FUSE International festival in Kingston to outdoor theatre performances in the beautiful settings of Kew Gardens and Morden Hall Park. History enthusiasts can step back in time with Tudor jousting spectacles at West Horsley Place and Hampton Court Palace, while, with a little luck from the weather gods, our guide to some of the area’s

best outdoor swimming spots may provide the perfect inspiration for a summer dip. You’ll find loads of ideas on our website. Our lead feature this month shines a spotlight on Her Court, a fascinating project presented by Young Masters in collaboration with Wimbledon Museum. The exhibition brings together artefacts from the museum’s collection connected to the women’s suffrage movement alongside the work of contemporary artists from a range of disciplines, each offering their own interpretation of themes surrounding women’s rights, equality and social change. We’re delighted to be involved in the special event ‘Time & Leisure In Conversation’ with Helen Pankhurst CBE, great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst. Queensmere restored! A Victorian bathing pond has been transformed into a wildlife haven after a massive restoration project. Queensmere is one of Wimbledon Commons’ largest ponds and was created on marshy grassland in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The pond was a popular bathing spot until a few decades ago. Now, after an 18-month restoration, the pond has new wildflower planting on the banks, a visitor viewing deck, a dog ramp to allow access without damaging vegetation, and a wildfowl island habitat constructed from excess silt. It also features a new reedbed to act as a natural pollutant filter.

Faye Brann, winner of the 2020 Comedy Women in Print Prize, has a new novel Little Grey Cells, the second in her crime caper series, The Jessica Sinclair Mysteries. The action starts at a celebratory dinner party in a picture-perfect Surrey village, where a body is discovered.

South west Londoner Chris Naunton is known for making Ancient Egypt accessible through his books and documentaries and has recently worked on Cleopatra: The Immersive Experience, which combines immersive VR, cutting-edge tech and real artefacts. We talked with Chris about his explorations in Egypt – including getting to hold Tutankhamun’s iron dagger, and the supposed curse put on Howard Carter and his team after they discovered King Tut’s tomb. Wimbledon in art Serap Pollard creates striking pictures of the tennis. She tells us: “I have been living in Wimbledon for 25 years now, right in the heart of Wimbledon Village…. I love it for its lush greenery, magnificent houses, and countless tennis courts. The nature and atmosphere are breathtaking. Tennis is the lifeblood here; children start playing at three or four years old, and you see people in their 70s and 80s still on the courts. While the Wimbledon Tournament itself lasts for two weeks, in reality, tennis is alive here all year round. As an artist living in Wimbledon, it is simply impossible not to be inspired by this.”

From Reception onwards, pupils have weekly coaching delivered by the club’s expert coaches, who lead curriculum sessions and co-curricular clubs throughout the school year.

WJTI celebrates 25th anniversary with champion Jamie Murray In April we caught up with now-retired doubles star Jamie Murray at Sacred Heart RC Primary School in Battersea, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative. The WJTI is the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s flagship community tennis programme, focused on outreach to schools across the boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth, and has introduced almost 330,000 local children to tennis. It is funded by the Wimbledon Foundation, the official charity of the AELTC and The Championships. The day opened with an assembly for Reception pupils, explaining the history and traditions of Wimbledon, from its humble beginnings to what tennis whites used to look like for men and women. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Jamie Murray was then brought onstage to meet the children. Proceedings then moved outside to the school’s tennis courts, where tennis sessions with several year groups took place, led by Murray himself.

WIMBLEDON’S OTHER LEGACY Cynthia Valianti Corbett and Helen Pankhurst reﬂect on art, activism and the hidden suffrage history at the heart of Her Court, a new exhibition at Wimbledon Museum

s the world turns its attention to Wimbledon this summer, a new exhibition at Wimbledon Museum reveals a lesser-known story from the borough’s past: its connection to the women’s suffrage movement. Her Court, a collaboration between Young Masters and the museum, brings contemporary art into dialogue with archival material, exploring themes of courage, resistance and public voice. Opening during the Wimbledon Championships, the exhibition features painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, textiles, and film, with artists responding to historical artefacts connected to the struggle for women’s rights.

For Cynthia Valianti Corbett, founder rst Helen Pankhu of Young Masters, the project began with an unexpected discovery. “When we were approached by Wimbledon Museum about a possible collaboration, we were fortunate enough to explore their incredible archival material,” says Cynthia. One of the most surprising discoveries was the visual connection between Wimbledon and the suffragette movement itself. “The link between the colours white, purple and green was a revelation,” says Cynthia. “These colours were famously used by the suffragettes in their banners and protests, yet they are also synonymous with the Wimbledon Championships. It seems obvious once you see it, but until we started researching the project, we hadn’t appreciated how closely aligned they were.” That visual overlap forms a central thread throughout Her Court. The exhibition

The project also reflects the mission of Young Masters, the not-for-profit initiative founded by Cynthia in 2009, which has helped launch the careers of more than 400 artists from over 85 countries. An open call attracted submissions from artists working across a wide range of disciplines. “Artists were eager to engage with this important and ongoing conversation through their work,” says Cynthia. “The breadth of approaches, materials and perspectives was impressive, and the quality of submissions made

the final selection process extremely challenging.” Visitors can expect a rich variety of artistic interpretations, each offering a unique perspective on the exhibition’s themes. “We hope people experience a genuine sense of discovery,” she says. “Each artist has responded differently to the idea of Her Court, and together they create something thoughtprovoking, accessible and deeply engaging.” Alongside the exhibition, a special Time & Leisure In Conversation event will bring together Cynthia, her daughter Carmela Corbett, an actor and Women’s Aid Community Ambassador, and women’s rights campaigner Helen Pankhurst CBE, great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst, two of the most influential figures in the suffrage movement. For Helen, recovering local histories such as

Wimbledon’s role in the campaign for votes for women is essential to understanding social change. “Local stories resonate locally and help to tell the national story. What was powerful about the suffrage movement is exactly this, how women up and down the country, of all ages and backgrounds became involved and campaigned together. Without the local stories, history becomes partial, its richness and tapestry are lost.” Helen believes contemporary art plays a crucial role in reconnecting audiences with that history. “Art was central to the suffrage movement and the suffragettes were brilliant at its use, at understanding the power of art, of imagery, of pomp and ceremony. As Sylvia’s granddaughter, I am particularly aware of how powerful art can be as she was the artist behind a lot of the suffragette designs. Art contributed to the movement then and it can contribute to our understanding and emotional engagement with the movement today.” While the suffragettes achieved one of the most significant democratic victories of the twentieth century, Helen argues that many of the issues they fought against remain unresolved. “If they were here today I have no doubt that they would be urging us on, in all aspects of gender inequality. They saw the vote as the first tool for change, for accessing some power and ensuring that policies reflected their interests. Their motives for engaging were because of their own experience of violence, economic inequality and so on. When you start looking at the detail of women’s lives it is evident that many of the inequalities persist, some having morphed into new forms: the rise of pornography and abuse through social media for example. Emmeline wanted ‘women to count as much as men’. That struggle remains, women are still not considered as important as men. Their voice

matters less. The economic activities they are most associated with are either not monetised or poorly monetised.” Progress in political representation also remains incomplete. “Emmeline would be disappointed that over 100 years after some women got the vote we are only at 41% representation in parliament and that this figure is the highest yet. Progress to 50% cannot be taken for granted.” Asked what younger generations can learn from the suffragettes, Helen points to their creativity, determination and collective spirit. “There is so much to learn from the suffragettes around communication and inspiration. Their tactics around militancy define them, but this was a response to their lack of political voice and the tactics of the government which ratcheted up the violence on both sides. Direct action is different from militancy and was always on the cards. Understanding when this is a useful tool and when it is not, what form it should take, and what the consequences of its use are is also particularly important. “I would argue that they were lateral thinkers and that this is part of their magic. Finally, their campaign was about bringing people together across difference, creating a movement – literally and figuratively. The importance, the power and the joy of working together for a common and progressive cause cannot be over-emphasised.” Helen describes what she has learned from her family’s legacy and what continues to strike her most about Emmeline and Sylvia: “Emmeline’s single-mindedness, her dedication, her incredible courage and determination. She and her middle daughter, my grandmother, were very different and I draw inspiration from both of them for slightly contradictory reasons.

Emmeline inspired by her force, Sylvia by her gentleness. Emmeline believed that in the time of war they were facing, you follow the leader and she was the leader. Sylvia believed in the importance of everybody’s voice in decision making – particularly when it came to issues around democracy.” The visual symbolism explored throughout Her Court remains one of the exhibition’s most striking themes. The suffragettes understood the power of colour, imagery and messaging in a way that feels remarkably contemporary. “They were central, three colours with their symbolism and everybody knew what they are about. They also had three words ‘Votes for Women’ and another three words ‘Deeds not Words’. It’s an interesting question about symbolism in political movements today. I feel they are much less important somehow. Maybe with a more illiterate society these were more important. However, the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words is probably still true. The problem is that we are bombarded with a million images and words so it’s that much harder to ensure your images and words are kept centre stage.” Ultimately, Her Court is not simply an exhibition about history. It is an invitation to reflect on the relationship between past and present, and on the continuing relevance of the questions the suffragettes raised. Asked what she hopes visitors will take away from the exhibition, Helen’s answer is simple: “The connection between past and present.” As Wimbledon celebrates excellence on the tennis court, Her Court offers a timely reminder that another struggle once unfolded here — one fought not for trophies, but for equality, representation and the right to be heard.  T&L

What does Wimbledon Village mean to you? Wimbledon Village means a great deal to me. It’s been my home and my place of work for almost 40 years now. I brought up my three children here. It’s a special place where friends are made and warmth and friendliness abound. Tell us about your experience? I joined Robert Holmes & Company at the start of our residential sales business in July 1987, a path that had been predicted a short while before by a clairvoyant – it was, and remains astonishing to me that she saw what lay ahead for me. As with everything, there have been ups and downs, but my overall experience has been wonderful and rewarding. I have met many interesting people and have faced many interesting challenges – helping people has helped me and for that I am grateful. I met my husband through my work – what more can I say! What makes the ideal property to sell? Desirability comes in many forms, but location, potential, gardens and views all play a big part. Presenting a home in its best possible light is obviously a great help, but sometimes this can be tough, especially when selling at a later stage in life after many years of accumulating all sorts of treasures and things that we can find hard to part with. Why is Robert Holmes the leading estate agent? Since the beginning, we have been at the heart of our community, getting involved with charities, schools and causes that are close to all our hearts. Being a small independent company we have to do things a bit differently, and we do. We all live in and around Wimbledon and those of us with children have brought them up here, giving us an in-depth knowledge of schools and what’s important to families moving here from other areas. We will make ourselves available as much as we possibly can to fit in with the busy schedules of our clients and buyers including Sundays and Bank Holidays. We will help from the beginning until the end, and will roll up our sleeves to get jobs done – basically no job is too big or too small. What properties are hot right now? Those with air-conditioning! But, in general it’s so subjective, especially in a sensitive market. Whilst properties with large gardens and wonderful views are always

a draw, they are not immune to market sensitivities. Hot buyers form a very important part of selling hot properties and therefore luck and timing play a big part. We need more properties to suit people moving from larger family homes – these are in short supply and would be considered hot – as often there aren’t enough. Tell us about the types of properties you sell? We sell all types of properties, from compact studio flats and wonderful bijoux cottages through to substantial residences old and new and everything in between. What are you excited about on the property market? From my point of view, and our point of view as a company, I am excited about our future in the property market. We are moving forward with fresh vision and leadership with our new CEO, Trey Scott, and new investment. We are investing in our branding, new areas of marketing and moving with the times. Robert Holmes, our chairman and brand ambassador, continues to be involved but can now enjoy looking back at all that he, and we, have achieved together. Has the Village seen any changes in the market? Wimbledon Village and the surrounding area will always be sought after, owing to excellent schools and proximity to Central London and the City and to London’s major

airports. However, demand and prices do soften in difficult times, but our experiences over the years has been that Wimbledon tends to recover quickly. If you were selling a home, what is your best piece of advice? Call me! Joking aside though, do all you possibly can to present your home or the property you are selling, in its best possible light. Invite two to three agents to give advice and don’t necessarily be swayed by the highest price given. Price is so important, particularly in a tricky market, therefore trying to get the guide price ‘right’ in order to attract attention and good buyers is key. What is your favourite time of year in the Village? That’s hard to answer! But probably April to September because everywhere looks so beautiful – from when the blossom and the buds start to when the leaves turn to red and gold – and during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships too as there’s such a wonderful buzz!

SUMMER SKIN

Get your glow as temperatures rise with these simple saviours With a tricky mix of air-con, increased sun exposure, heat and humidity, the summer months can wreak merry hell on our skin, all at a time when we’re likely to be baring more of our flesh than usual. Breakouts and blemishes and increased dryness are some of the common concerns, along with neglected areas that are suddenly seeing the light of day when the beach calls.

The ultimate summer routine

Hot and humid weather can see our skin produce more oil, leading to blocked pores. Cleanse gently but thoroughly. Banish the bumps

Typically found on the upper arms, those rough little bumps could be keratosis pilaris (KP) where excess keratin

builds up and blocks hair follicles. Moisturising body lotions can help soften the texture of the skin. Creams containing salicylic acid, lactic acid or urea can soften the bumps. A dermatologist might prescribe a retinoid or laser. Swap grainy scrubs for AHA-based exfoliants.

Moisturise well

Yes, it’s tedious but your skin needs a daily moisturiser. Look for body moisturisers that contain hydrating heroes such as cocoa butter and squalane. Many dermatologists recommend applying moisturiser right after a shower while skin is damp to lock in moisture. But avoid long hot showers which can be drying.

Hydrate from within

As well as drinking plenty of water, water-rich foods can all provide a hydration boost for your skin. Go for strawberries, watermelon and cucumber. You can also opt for foods packed with powerful antioxidants which protect skin from damage such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach. Vitamin C is great for skin with kiwi, blueberries and broccoli rich sources. Almonds and avocados meanwhile will top up your Vitamin E. THE LOWDOWN ON THE MUSICAL, THE BALLAD OF JOHNNY AND JUNE Actors Christopher Ryan Grant and Christina Bianco talk to Ben Berman about touring the Johnny Cash and June Carter musical, which comes to Richmond in July

The Ballad of Johnny and June dives deeper than an average biographical musical, offering an insight into the complex marriage of Johnny Cash and June Carter. The production has been developed with John Carter Cash, the son of the country stars, and along with all the classic hits, the show reveals his parents’ lives as never told before. Actors Christina Bianco (West End’s The Wizard of Oz) and Christopher Ryan Grant (Million Dollar Quartet) open up about the process of playing the revered singers. Chris has long been a fan of Cash, and holds up an aged, framed portrait of him. “I cut this out of the newspaper when I was 10 years old,” he says. Christopher grew up in Texas, where he notes that country music is a part of your identity. “There was a period where I wore cowboy jeans and boots to school every day. I went through a lot of phases, but that was one of them!” Christina says that without Johnny Cash and June Carter, “we would not have country music as we know it today.” She, too, loves the genre and even went to Nashville way back when to sing.

Christopher talks about working with the son of the country stars, “John is lovely, and it’s a constant reminder about what we’re actually doing here in a very real and present way.” He talks about how John’s “been willing to open his family’s history up to us in a way that I don’t think has been done before.” The two performers don’t want any spoilers of the show, but John’s input allows for a raw and honest take. Christina adds on that, “This is the truth, and it’s never been out there before.”

The musical features John Carter Cash as a character, who recounts his parents’ memories throughout the show. Chris talks about how, through John’s memories, “We learn about his [Johnny Cash’s] struggles with addiction. We learn about June’s struggles with addiction,” through the lens of their son.

Chris wants audiences to take away from the musical that, “no matter what struggles you are dealing with currently or in the past, there’s somebody there who is willing to hold you through that… People come up to us afterwards, and say, ‘I came expecting a concert, and [now] I’m gonna go call my mom.’ I think it’s ultimately about love and redemption.” 

The pure bliss is only briefly interrupted by some important decision making - where to explore next at the generous 5,700 m2 waldSPA. First stop, the Japanese Onsen pool with its 42-degree heated waters, then sweat it out in the Finnish sauna with rocky mountain views perfectly framed by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, before cooling off with a cold dip in the lake. A three-storey health, beauty and fitness space is reserved just for adults, ensuring blissful relaxation whilst connecting with the stunning natural surroundings. The views from the gym and exercise studio give your workout an extra special boost. Start on the ground floor and work your way to the top through saunas, chill rooms, outdoor pools and hot tubs. There’s a luxurious number of places to relax, unwind and breathe at Forsthofgut, so you won’t be competing for a lounger bed, or room in the sauna.
