Journey through time This September, Teddington’s Landmark Arts Centre will be transformed with Luxmuralis’ TIME. The immersive sound and light installation will tell the story of time in all its forms, using projections and soundscapes across the building’s soaring interior. The exhibition concludes the Landmark Arts Centre’s 30th anniversary celebrations and begins marking 130 years since the foundation stone of the historic building was laid. Created by internationally renowned artists Peter Walker and David Harper, Luxmuralis has transformed the likes of St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and Exeter (pictured).

Putney’s secret sculptor On our website now, local writer Hugh Thompson tells us about the connections between Henry Moore, whose work is now being displayed at Kew Gardens, and Putney sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. The latter’s studio was on Winthorpe Road (now Vintersol Distillery) and many credit him with the style and abstract fashion which allowed such well known greats as Henry Moore, Elizabeth Fink and Barbara Hepworth to achieve the profile that abstract sculpture enjoys today.

Knit Wits Haus of SIBLING runs until 26 September and is a collaboration between Kingston Museum, The Community Brain and Kingston University. SIBLING was founded in 2008 by three friends: Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery, with Joe becoming a lecturer at Kingston University. The brand’s designs featured oversized silhouettes, clashing neon colours, leopard spots, Fair Isles, and sequins.

QUEEN OF PRINT Designer Orla Kiely talks about her inspiration and her life in south west London. By Tina Lofthouse

n her Clapham studio, Orla Kiely cuts a striking figure in a flowing dress that bears one of her signature prints. She’s settled on the sofa – the fabric is by her studio. Her bookshelves include Fifty Bags That Changed the World, its cover featuring her iconic Stem print. Upstairs, her team of four designers work among rails of clothing, shelves of bags and stacks of homewares in bright geometric patterns.

I

It’s like a Disneyland for print. But this is very much the engine room of the Orla Kiely brand. Boards are covered in work-inprogress designs for the forthcoming season, and there’s busy discussion over samples. Her designers have been with her a long time, and there’s a calm yet industrious atmosphere about the place. She explains that it’s very much a collaboration. “These are people that I really love working with

and I trust implicitly. We are on the same wavelength. There’s no big battles.” We’re chatting after our photoshoot. Bella Lawrence-Mills, the company’s brand manager, joins us bringing in a faded yet beautiful photo of Orla’s mother, Maeve, in her youth wearing a traditional cream cardigan and a headscarf. The knit was handed down to Orla and has inspired a new winter range, which will feature classic designs given a subtle twist. Her face lights up as she talks about her mother back in Ireland – although Maeve would not be best pleased if we revealed her age. Over the summer, Orla will visit and they will take some of the designs to show her. “She still looks cool. We’re going to take up the cardigans and take some photos…” Orla’s husband Dermott Rowan pops in to see how the shoot is going. They have known each other since childhood, and he’s been her business partner from the start. The secret of this successful partnership? They have distinct roles within the business, with Orla leading the creative direction and Dermott overseeing operations. She says: “I think if we were trying to do the same thing and getting into a discussion about it every day, it would be more challenging.” They have two grown-up sons - Robert and Hamish. Robert works on the operational side of the business. The studio, just off Clapham Common, has been their location for over 25 years, not far from where it all started in Orla’s flat in Wandsworth. They live nearby. So what has kept them here? “We love the green spaces; the Old Town and you can get into central London in 20 minutes.” For creative inspiration, Orla cites the Omnibus theatre, the Picturehouse cinema and Studio Voltaire. For restaurants, she is a fan of Robin Gill’s Sorella and Adam Byatt’s Trinity for special occasions.

Thirty years in business have brought plenty of highs. She was awarded an OBE in 2011 and is a senior fellow at the Royal College of Art where she completed her master’s degree. She was also awarded the

Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad. There was an exhibition of her career at the Fashion and Textile Museum in 2018. “When they came to us asking if we would be interested, I knew we’d kept an archive, but it was all in boxes. So I was really nervous and thought we wouldn’t have enough pieces.” She needn’t have worried. “We went into this warehouse and we spent about two days hanging everything out, putting bags on shelves, clothing on rails, homeware… when the exhibition organisers came to see us, they were like, yes, this is plenty…” It was a surprise to Orla to see how much she had done through her career. “You only think about the season you’re working in and everything else is put away. It was quite a thing to see all the work we’ve done as a team and to reflect on it.” The exhibition featured two-and-a-half metrescale dresses hung with Orla’s fabrics, among the highlights. It went on to tour the UK and Ireland. While the exhibition was a huge testament to her success, 2018 was a traumatic year for Orla with Orla Kiely’s parent company, Kiely Rowan, going into voluntary liquidation. But the brand rebuilt strongly, an incredible achievement. Understandably it is still a painful subject for Orla. She says, “I think we’re very lucky that we have such a strong identity and really loyal customers.” Much of the brand’s appeal lies in playful and upbeat designs. “I guess the colours really resonate with people. They are drawn to them. I mean the designs are not for everyone. But I do think they’re uplifting and positive. They give you a buzz.”

Growing up in the 1970s, bright colour combinations were everywhere, including her family kitchen which was green Formica with an orange ceiling. “It was very much of its time. The green kitchen and tiles are still there but the orange has gone!” Orla and Dermott named their company Olive and Orange in tribute to the kitchen.

Orla talks about an arty childhood, and always knew she would do something creative. “It was my favourite subject at school, and the art teacher liked me – she was a very eccentric, wonderful nun. She encouraged me to apply to the National College of Art and Design, which at the time I wasn’t that confident about, but I got in.”

One of Orla’s most distinctive designs is the Stem pattern, which has seen many iterations over the years. “The Stem design is an interesting one because it developed organically. I remember doing it initially as a kind of a scribble by hand very last-minute for a season we were doing.

She tried all the different disciplines during her Foundation course and realised that textiles was the direction she wanted to go in. When she finished her studies, she went to New York and landed a job in a big studio. Orla returned to Ireland where she worked for Paul Costelloe and then on to London for a role as print designer at Esprit. “That was really the point that changed everything in a sense that I was surrounded by all these amazing creatives from around the world.” She left to do a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art and afterwards started her business.

“We put it into the computer – one of the very first Apple Macs! We tried it in three different colourways.” People loved it. The print was even seen on Sex and the City with Kristin Davis’s character Charlotte sporting a Stem bucket hat. “Then came the winter season and I was thinking about what we could do with this and I suddenly had this brainwave to laminate it like a kitchen tablecloth and make bags out of it. No other designer was doing that kind of thing.” Her collection spans everything from tableware to towels, dresses to sunglasses, and, of course, bags, many bags. And it’s not just the patterns but the attention to detail that has helped keep them so popular. She shows us a sample from her new AW26 collection – it’s based on the same fabric as the sofa, and it’s so stunning that it has the editorial team literally threatening handbags at dawn to get their hands on one. We will have to be quick – there are only 60 being made. Her prints have been worn by everyone from Alexa Chung and Keira Knightley to Catherine, Princess of Wales. Orla laughs, modestly conceding, “Yeah, it’s great when that happens.”

Today, she is as busy as ever. Any downtime? She has a full social life centred around her home in Clapham. She loves to go to Paris, where her brother lives, Copenhagen and Amsterdam, but she doesn’t exactly switch off. “I’ll head to an exhibition looking for inspiration. Dermott and I are not very good at just tuning out.” She also loves being out in nature – walks on the common and back in her native Ireland. “I grew up in South Dublin, and we are 15 minutes’ drive from the most stunning lakes and mountains. And we’ve got this beautiful coastline.” With her mum and sisters living there too, it’s her perfect retreat and a full-circle return to the creativity where it all began.  T&L

IS YOUR PROSTATE TAKING OVER YOUR LIFE? Do you find yourself waking up multiple times a night? Is your flow weak or unpredictable? Are your daily plans dictated by the nearest toilet?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. These are common symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) an enlarged prostate that affects millions of men as they age. Many men live with these symptoms for years, assuming they’re just part of getting older often underestimating how much their prostate is affecting their health and quality of life.

12

While medication can help for a while, and traditional surgery may feel like a big leap, many men feel unsure what to do next - or assume they simply have to put up with the symptoms. Today, there is another treatment option available for men with BPH.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO BPH TREATMENT

REAL STORIES, REAL RELIEF

Aquablation® therapy is a cutting-edge, NICE recommended treatment that uses real-time ultrasound guidance and roboticassisted, heat-free, waterjet technology. This innovative approach allows surgeons to create a personalised plan, precisely targeting the prostate tissue that needs to be removed while preserving the areas that matter most.

Actor Derek Griffiths’ experience mirrors that of many men treated with Aquablation therapy: symptom relief, without the trade-offs they feared. For many men, the fear of losing sexual function is what stops them seeking treatment.

CLINICAL OUTCOMES THAT MATTER TO MEN Aquablation therapy isn’t just about improving urinary symptoms - it’s about doing so while minimising trade-offs many men fear. In prospective, clinical studies:

“Sex life. I had great nightmares of losing it. It went back to normal, which was amazing because I didn’t think it would!”

The procedure is designed to deliver a consistent and precise resection of prostate tissue, supporting effective symptom relief, reducing the likelihood of needing further intervention¹–³.

RISE

LEADERS

Rise: Female Leaders Take Centre Stage Lucy Kane on celebrating the women who lead, inspire and innovate

It has been extraordinary to witness the rise of women in business – their growing confidence and progression into senior leadership positions. As ever, we are proud to champion female leaders at Time & Leisure, and this summer we bring together an incredible group of women in Rise: Female Leaders. Through honest conversations, we have created a space for them to tell the real stories, not just the highlight reel. Why they founded their businesses, what motivates them, the challenges they have faced, and what it means to stand up and share their journeys. So, settle down with a cuppa on the sun lounger this summer and enjoy their inspiring stories. Our lead Rise interview is with iconic designer Orla Kiely, who invited us into her design studio in Clapham after we met at an event for women earlier this year. This month's exclusive photoshoot with Orla has been one of the highlights of my year, surrounded by a smorgasbord of pattern, colour, prints, textiles and handbags, with a sneak preview of next season's collection. What I admire most about Orla is her resilience and consistency. For more than three decades she has built an iconic brand, created timeless fashion and prints, navigated the highs and lows of business, and led a loyal team that brings her creative vision to life. She is a shining role model, yet so humble. It was a privilege to be welcomed into her studio, to see behind the scenes, meet her designers and even take a peek inside the kitchen cupboard, filled with a wonderful collection of Orla Kiely mugs. I have a feeling that an everyday household object could ironically become a symbol of strength for women in business. First, the humble coffee mug – perhaps designed by Orla – representing the conversations and connections women make over a cup of coffee. Then there's the toffee hammer, which Helen Pankhurst brought along to our In Conversation event, Her Court: The Role of the Suffragettes in Wimbledon. Helen, the great-granddaughter of suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, revealed how this

seemingly ordinary domestic tool was used by suffragettes to smash windows as part of their campaign for equality. If you could ask a suffragette one question, what would it be? It was a privilege to ask Helen, a women's rights advocate, whether we still really need to champion women in business. Her answer was deeply motivating, eloquently highlighting the inequalities that still exist and why bringing women together remains so important. She explained that women often have to work much harder to reach decisionmaking positions. By contrast, many men in positions of power benefit from established networks built through elite schools, family connections, private members' clubs and golf courses, while women are also more likely to take career breaks. Creating networks, hosting events and encouraging conversations all help elevate women into leadership. And when there is greater equality in positions of power, we create fairer policies, better decision-making and stronger businesses. Our networking events for women in business continue to create amazing connections. One conversation can lead to countless opportunities, as businesswoman Emmy Offiong demonstrated. After featuring

in our previous Rise Women in Business Q&A, she was invited to speak at the Kingston Chamber of Commerce Women's Networking Lunch. Emmy later invited me to speak at her International Women's Day lunch, where I first met Orla at Fortnum & Mason. It perfectly demonstrates the power of standing up, connecting and leaning in. We're delighted to be offering more networking opportunities than ever before, including our event this October, proudly sponsored by HSBC. They have an outstanding team supporting female entrepreneurs and founders through programmes designed to help women thrive. This month you can meet Taryn Robertson, Regional Director for London SME Business Banking, in our Rise Q&A feature, while Liz Martins, Senior Economist at HSBC UK, will be sharing her insights into economic growth at our October networking event. Last year's event sold out, and with more speaker announcements still to come, make sure you book your tickets early. I hope you enjoy our special Rise: Female Leaders feature this month. Please support these remarkable women, champion their businesses and connect with them – they would love to hear from you. Because when women support one another, we all grow stronger.  T&L

Led by Women, Centred on Care Dr Lowri Bailey is the Medical Director at Wimbledon Medical Service, providing personalised healthcare for individuals and families in the heart of Wimbledon Village.

What sets Wimbledon Medical Service apart, and why do your patients connect so strongly with what you offer? For us, general practice has always been about more than just diagnosing illness. When I was invited to lead the clinical service here at Wimbledon Medical Service, working alongside my fellow GPs Dr Sian Morris and Dr Eleonor Beecroft, we embraced a shared vision: to deliver a different kind of private healthcare. We wanted to champion a service that places preventative medicine, continuity of care, and genuine doctor-patient relationships right at its heart.

Patients connect with us because we offer them time. In today’s fast-paced world, consultations can often feel like transactions. With us, they are conversations. We take the time to look at the whole person sitting in front of us, not just a list of symptoms on a screen. By knowing our patients over time, we can recognise subtle changes early, intervene sooner, and support healthier choices before problems even have a chance to develop.

In a world where we can order health tests online with a click, why is having a dedicated GP still so important? It’s true that patients have more access to medical information than ever before. You can order blood tests, scans, or use

online symptom checkers without ever seeing a doctor. While that wealth of information can feel empowering, we often see patients who are left feeling completely overwhelmed and anxious about what their results actually mean. There is still simply no substitute for clinical expertise and continuity of care. A blood test or a scan only tells a fraction of the story. Understanding your unique medical history, family background, lifestyle, personal concerns, and future health goals provides the vital context that transforms raw data into meaningful, reassuring medical advice. Rather than navigating your health alone, we advocate for a collaborative approach where we can help guide you through every step.

Which part of your vision feels the most personal and meaningful to you as female leaders in healthcare? As a female-led clinical team, the "Rise Women" ethos of community, care, and empowerment resonates deeply with us. Our most personal mission is helping people - particularly women navigating busy midlife transitions and menopause feel truly heard and supported.

There is something incredibly reassuring about having a doctor who knows your story, understands your unique lifestyle stresses, and is there to guide you through

every stage of your life. Redefining what modern private general practice can be (combining evidence-based medicine with lasting, supportive relationships) is what drives our clinical team every single day.

What exciting plans or initiatives are you most passionate about developing as you look ahead? We are incredibly excited to continue growing our comprehensive health assessments. Whether someone is looking for a thorough annual health review, a dedicated men’s or women's health assessment, or guidance through the menopause, we want to make proactive healthcare accessible and stress-free. Importantly, our assessments don’t end when the results arrive. We take the time to explain what the findings mean and collaborate on a personalised roadmap for long-term wellbeing. It’s about giving our local community the practical tools and confidence they need to live healthier, happier lives.

The Missing Piece of the Renovation Puzzle

Ellora Coupe founded Her Own Space CIC to help women homeowners discover how retrofit can create healthier, more comfortable homes. What was the inspiration behind founding the business?

Too often women spend years planning renovations without realising retrofit could make them healthier, more comfortable and cheaper to run. We help women ask the right questions before expensive decisions are made and look beyond confusing or misleading industry claims and poor standards.

Why is it important for women to have a community like this?

The insulation materials you use, and the building approach you take, can mean the difference between a home that overheats in summer and feels draughty in winter, and one that is healthy, comfortable and climate resilient. I believe a trusted, independent community supporting women to manage renovations to a higher standard is long overdue.

Your Trusted Notary

Ekaterina Cuff runs Phoenix Notary, trusted notarial services for international use.

What inspired you to create Phoenix Notary? I came to England over ten years ago to study law, convinced I knew exactly where my career was heading. Like many aspiring solicitors, I had a clear plan. Life had other ideas. There were setbacks, unexpected opportunities and moments where I questioned myself. Looking back, I realised I hadn’t chosen the wrong profession—I simply hadn’t found the right part of it. When I discovered the notarial profession, everything suddenly clicked. It brought together my international background, my love of languages and the kind of legal work I genuinely enjoy. For the first time, I knew I’d found exactly where I belonged. That’s how Phoenix Notary was born. What does Phoenix Notary do? Phoenix Notary is a modern, full-service notarial practice helping individuals and

businesses with legal documents for use overseas. Whether you’re buying or selling property abroad, appointing someone to act on your behalf, meeting the requirements of an international bank, or providing company documents to overseas authorities, we’re here to guide you through the process, helping to ensure everything is prepared correctly and accepted by the receiving authorities. What’s your vision for Phoenix Notary? I’m excited to continue growing Phoenix Notary, meeting incredible people and helping clients through some of life’s most important moments. But my biggest ambition goes beyond growing the practice. I want to raise awareness of the notarial profession. So many people have never heard of a Notary Public until they’re suddenly told they need one, yet it’s one of the oldest and most fascinating legal professions. I’d love to create more educational content, help people better understand what notaries do and show

that our role is about far more than simply placing a stamp on a document. If I can build a practice known for trusted guidance, exceptional client care and helping shine a light on this remarkable profession, I’ll know I’ve achieved exactly what I set out to do.

A Village in Your Pocket Founder Molly Aldridge on creating the ultimate app for modern family life What led you to founding the business? Becoming a mum to two boys, Jake and Joshua, changed my perspective. I longed for a community and space that catered for the whole family to work, rest and play on our doorstep in SW London. One trusted place where everything came together. That lived experience led me to launch The JJ Club - a members' club designed to make family life easier through recommendations, meaningful connections, events and exclusive benefits. Our mobile app is exactly that – a village in your pocket – and next year we'll open our first 30,000 sq ft clubhouse, the cornerstone of our 25,000-strong community.

Laura Capewell, founder of award-winning British wellness brand Arella, shares her story Tell us a bit about you and the business. I founded Arella after experiencing first-hand the difference that good nutrition can make to health and wellbeing. My ambition was to create a wellness brand that people could feel confident choosing, with carefully developed formulations that support different stages of life. Today, our award-winning supplements range includes Arella Collagen, Arella Pause and Arella Skin. What makes Arella unique from other wellness brands? Consumers are becoming far more discerning about what they put into their bodies. They're increasingly interested in understanding not just what ingredients they're taking, but how they work together to support long-term health. Every Arella formulation combines carefully selected plant-based ingredients with credible science to create clean, effective products that fit naturally into everyday life.

Aesthetic Medicine Redefined Dr Shobha Rajagopal is the founder of Raffles Medical Aesthetics, where medicine meets modern ageing Tell us about yourself and the business

Why should people come to Raffles for their treatments?

I'm Dr Shobha Rajagopal, an NHS doctor and the founder of Raffles Medical Aesthetics (RMA). I created RMA to bridge the gap between traditional medicine and aesthetic care, offering treatments that prioritise healthy ageing, skin health and natural-looking results.

Every consultation begins by understanding the person, not just the concern. We combine medical expertise with advanced technology to deliver evidence-based treatments. Whether your goal is healthier skin, facial rejuvenation or healthy ageing, our focus is on achieving elegant results that stand the test of time.

How did you get into this industry?

My background in ENT surgery and neurootology gave me a deep understanding of facial anatomy, neuroscience and regeneration. Medical aesthetics allows me to combine science, precision and artistry to help patients invest in themselves in a thoughtful, preventative way.

Tell us about your advanced treatments. We use Sofwave®, to stimulate your own collagen and elastin production to lift and firm the skin naturally. We also offer advanced laser treatments to improve pigmentation, redness, acne scarring and skin texture. Laser-assisted drug delivery allows us to enhance the absorption of targeted medications, providing exciting

24

What is your favourite thing about running your own business? solutions for concerns such as hair loss and skin rejuvenation. Perhaps the most exciting development is personalised genomics. Through genetic testing (a cheek swab), we can better understand why two people with the same concern—such as hair loss or acne—may respond very differently to treatment. Rather than relying on trial and error, we use your genetic profile to help guide personalised treatment plans, with expanding applications in exercise performance, women's health and targeted hormone optimisation.

As a woman in business, there's something incredibly rewarding about creating a brand from the ground up—one that's built on integrity, expertise and trust. In an industry where trends can often overshadow science, I've enjoyed creating a clinic that stays true to evidence-based medicine while putting patients first.

Nature Meets Neighbourhood Gabby McKenzie is an Urban Farmer and Food Grower for the Rooftop Farm at Wimbledon Quarter.

Tell us about the Farm. The Rooftop Farm sits on top of Wimbledon Quarter, right in the heart of the local community. We grow fruit and vegetables, cultivate mushrooms and produce honey. The farm is about showing what can be done in urban spaces. We try to keep things simple and thoughtful, using lowtech, sustainable methods and take a natural, balanced approach to growing. Everything we grow goes back into the local area. Our produce is sold at The Fire Station Café on Queen's Road and we donate to Wimbledon Guild’s HomeFood Café. Local restaurants including The Black Radish, Bingham Riverhouse and Orion by Alex Webb also feature our produce on their menus. How does it benefit people and the community? The farm brings growing food and

sustainability into the centre of Wimbledon in a very visible way. We work closely with our partners in The Fire Station Café where you can regularly buy our gourmet oyster mushrooms and tasty honey. As well as supplying local kitchens, we run farm tours and food-related events for the local community, so people can see food growing up close. We hope to show that urban spaces can be useful, productive and inspiring. How can people find out more or get involved? The easiest way to follow the farm is on Instagram @rooftopfarmwimbledon, where we post regular updates on what we’re growing, harvesting and working on. People can also sign up to our newsletter at wimbledonquarter.com/the-rooftopfarm-mailing-list to hear about upcoming tours, events and other ways to get involved.

What are your hopes and plans for the future? I’m excited about building closer relationships with our restaurant partners and involving them more in what we grow. I’d also like to share more about how we grow, continue to get involved with the local community and hopefully encourage more people to try growing food in their urban spaces.

SUMMER OUTDOOR CINEMA Watch Paddington and discover the stunning 55 acres of Danes Hill School, the perfect space to help your child grow.

BOOK TICKETS BELOW Just 25 minutes from Wimbledon

Fifty-Five Acres of Childhood

Twenty-five minutes from Wimbledon, just off the A3, Surrey takes over from suburban London. Fifty-five acres of it: playing fields, woodland, gardens and grounds on a scale that few schools, prep or senior, can offer a child. It’s the first thing most visitors mention, before they’ve seen a classroom or met a teacher. Not because the size is the point, but because of what it quietly allows: children can run without watching for a fence, wander into real woodland rather than a corner of it, and fit a games lesson, a walk and some outdoor art into one afternoon without anyone feeling hurried.

One age group, understood properly

The grounds make sense once you understand what they’re for. Danes Hill works with one age group only, children from two to thirteen, and that narrow focus shapes everything else. Nothing here has been adapted from a senior school timetable or squeezed in around older pupils’ priorities. Every specialist, every facility and every decision is built around what a child actually needs between nursery and the move to senior school. It means teachers who know this stretch of childhood well: the age when curiosity is

either encouraged or allowed to fade, when confidence takes hold or doesn’t. Space, used properly, teaches things a classroom alone cannot: resilience, independence, the confidence that comes from having somewhere to be genuinely active and genuinely free.

Grounds, not a playground

There is enough ground here for senior-school standard sports pitches and courts, purposebuilt art, music and drama facilities, outdoor classrooms and wild spaces that haven’t been tidied into something safer and duller. Most schools with grounds on this scale are senior schools, built around sixth formers and fixture lists. Danes Hill has simply applied the same scale and standard of facility much earlier, so a six- or seven-year-old gets access to spaces and coaching that elsewhere might be reserved for teenagers. It’s a practical response to what modern families are asking of a prep education: rigour without hothousing and a childhood that isn’t rushed to make room for it.

A community as much as a curriculum

Grounds this size also do something less

obvious…they give a school room to be a community rather than just a timetable. Parents, staff and pupils get to know one another properly. Families tend to describe joining Danes Hill less as choosing a school and more as joining something that stays with them well after their children have moved on to senior school. That sense of belonging sits alongside four values the school returns to often: growth, passion, courage and respect. Not as a wall plaque, but as fairly ordinary, daily things: children encouraged to try what feels difficult, given room to find what actually interests them, allowed to get things wrong without it being a big deal and taught to treat each other decently. One parent put it simply: their child had been encouraged to try new things, take risks and persevere when they struggled.

Close enough, far enough

The location does real work here too. Twentyfive minutes from Wimbledon, with easy access off the A3, keeps Danes Hill within reach of south-west London for the daily commute, while the grounds themselves are unmistakably Surrey rather than London green space. For families weighing up a house move, a commute, or simply where their children will spend the most formative years of their education, that combination is rare. Near enough to the city. Far enough from it.

PLAY WITH PATTERN How to bring an interior scheme to life with checks, florals, stripes and geometrics… Pattern is one of the easiest ways to add personality and character to a home, yet many people avoid it for fear of getting it wrong. The secret is to think about colour, scale and balance.

Start small

If you're new to decorating with pattern, begin with accessories such as cushions, vases and tableware. Even a collection of patterned mugs or ceramics can create an eye-catching display on open shelving. Once you're comfortable, you can introduce larger pieces.

Combine pattern styles

Don't be afraid to combine different types of pattern. Soft florals can pair well with bold geometrics, while classic stripes work with checks or abstract prints. The unexpected contrast makes a scheme interesting.

Think about the mood

Pattern influences the atmosphere of a room. Bold, graphic designs can bring energy to dining rooms, kitchens or home offices, while subtle botanicals, subtle botanicals and gentle stripes create a calmer feel that's well suited to bedrooms and relaxing living spaces.

Subtle ideas ILIV

Tie it together with colour Mixing patterns works best when they share a common colour palette. Florals can sit happily alongside stripes or checks if they feature similar tones. Pick out either the background colour or an accent shade to create a cohesive look.

Pattern doesn't always have to be printed. Embroidery, quilting, woven fabrics, natural materials and embossed finishes all add visual interest in a more understated way. Vintage textiles and faded prints are another great option for introducing pattern with a softer, more relaxed feel. Original Style

HOMES

Choose a hero pattern

A statement wallpaper, rug, sofa or upholstered headboard can become the starting point for your scheme. Build around it by choosing patterns and accessories that pick up its colours, creating a layered look.

The Main Company

Mix the scale

Varying the size of your patterns helps create balance. Try combining one large-scale print with a medium design and a smaller, more detailed pattern. This prevents them from competing for attention.

Avoid overwhelm

As a starting point, limit yourself to around three main patterns in a room and balance them with plain fabrics or solid surfaces to give the eye somewhere to rest. Large-scale patterns often feel calmer than lots of small, busy prints.

Update with the seasons

Swapping patterned accessories is an easy way to refresh your home throughout the year. Fresh florals and lighter colours work beautifully in spring and summer, while plaids, rich jewel tones and deeper hues bring warmth during autumn and winter winter. 

TIMELESS INTERIORS Following the opening of a new showroom in Kingston-upon-Thames earlier this year, we spoke to Lisa Coppin, Chief Creative Officer at The Cotswold Company, about what customers can expect to discover in store.

Can you tell us about The Cotswold Company’s Kingston-upon-Thames showroom and what local residents can expect when they visit? We’re incredibly excited to have opened our new Kingston-upon-Thames showroom, as it marked a major milestone for the brand, our first retail space in London. Spanning more than 4,000 square feet, the showroom offers customers the opportunity to explore one of the most extensive ranges of The Cotswold Company’s bestselling collections. The space features a curated selection of upholstery alongside a fully integrated Upholstery Hub. This dedicated consultation area showcases full-length fabric options and allows customers to explore sofa cards, fabric samples and painted wood swatches, many of which can be taken home to help ensure they make the right choice for their home and personal style.

With summer well and truly here, what are some of the ways customers can refresh their homes to embrace the season and are there any new launches they should be looking out for? Summer is the perfect time to breathe new life into your home with lighter layers, natural textures and soft, sun-washed colours. Swapping in lightweight linens and cottons through cushions, throws or bedding can instantly create a fresher, airier feel. Natural materials such as rattan, wood and neutral ceramics also add warmth and relaxed, organic character.

To complete the experience, the showroom features a striking floral installation by Bex Partridge of Botanical Tales, alongside carefully considered finishes and design details across the walls, floors and ceilings to create a warm and inspiring retail environment.

The Cotswold Company is renowned for crafting well-made, long-lasting furniture that truly makes a house feel like a home. How does this commitment to quality and durability shape the company’s approach? It’s at the heart of everything we do when

Elsewhere in the showroom, visitors will find freestanding kitchen furniture, essential home office pieces, and a wide range of soft furnishings and accessories designed to complement different interior styles.

Earlier this year we launched our Ready-Made Curtain collection, including beautiful sheer linen styles that are perfect for bringing a light, summery feel to living rooms and bedrooms. We’ve also introduced new designs, including a limestone colourway in our much-loved Chester range, a capsule collection of rattan furniture which is perfect for adding coastal charm to a living room or conservatory, and new additions to our bestselling Camille collection featuring elegant, French op antique-inspired shapes in a pin light limewash oak finish.

All of our furniture comes with a 15-year structural guarantee, and we focus on thoughtful details, from the paint finishes and handles to the raw materials we use. Ultimately, we want customers to love our pieces and cherish them for years to come. Can you tell us anything about what is coming up for the brand? We recently partnered with award-winning design authority Reena Simon, The Cotswold Company’s new Interior Design Expert. Over the coming months, we’ll be working closely with Reena to create inspiring content designed to help our customers confidently layer and style our products in their homes.

Beautiful Homes Begin with Good Planning Thinking of extending, renovating or moving? Before you choose paint colours or kitchen finishes, make sure the legal foundations of your plans are just as carefully considered.

Many of us will return home from summer holidays with a renewed vision for our homes—whether that’s creating more space for a growing family, finally embarking on that long planned extension, or preparing to sell and move to the next chapter. While design trends and beautiful interiors often steal the spotlight, the most successful home projects begin long before the first wall comes down or the ‘For Sale’ board goes up. Careful legal preparation can save months of delay, unexpected expense and unnecessary stress.

Reimagining Your Home

A thoughtfully designed extension or renovation can transform the way you live and significantly enhance the value of your property. However, even relatively modest projects come with legal considerations that are often overlooked. Planning permission isn’t always required, but it’s certainly not something to assume. Properties in conservation areas, listed buildings, leasehold homes and many newer developments can all be subject to additional restrictions. Where planning consent isn’t needed, obtaining confirmation that works are lawful can provide valuable reassurance for future buyers. Building Regulations are equally important. Completion certificates, structural approvals and installation certificates for windows, boilers and electrical works are all documents that buyers, mortgage lenders and solicitors increasingly expect to see. The reality is simple: beautiful design adds value, but proper documentation protects it.

Preparing for the Autumn Property Market

Traditionally, September and October see renewed momentum in the housing market. Buyers return from summer holidays, families aim to move before Christmas, and sellers who are organised often enjoy a smoother transaction. If you’re considering selling, now is the ideal time to gather the paperwork that can otherwise delay an agreed sale.

Your Pre-Sale Checklist

Before your property goes on the market, check that you have: • Planning permissions or Certificates of Lawfulness for any alterations. • Building Regulations approval and Completion Certificates. • FENSA certificates for replacement windows and doors. • Gas Safe certification for boiler installations. • Electrical installation certificates where applicable. • Guarantees or warranties for major building works. • Build Over Agreements if your extension affects public sewers. • Leasehold permissions or licences for alterations, where required. Missing documents don’t always prevent a sale—but they frequently lead to additional enquiries, indemnity policies, renegotiations or frustrating delays just when you’re hoping to exchange contracts.

Planning Ahead Pays Dividends

Whether you’re creating your forever home or preparing it for the market, taking legal advice at an early stage can help identify potential issues before they become costly problems. From reviewing title documents before an extension to ensuring every certificate is in place before a sale, proactive planning provides confidence for homeowners, buyers and lenders alike. As homes continue to evolve to reflect changing lifestyles, it’s worth remembering that the most successful projects combine inspired design with careful preparation behind the scenes. At Ashworths Solicitors LLP, we work alongside homeowners at every stage of their property journey—from advising on alterations and redevelopment to supporting seamless residential conveyancing. By ensuring the legal details are in order from the outset, we help clients protect their investment, avoid unnecessary delays and move forward with confidence. Because a beautifully designed home deserves equally solid foundations.

Your Dream Garden

What inspired you to launch Stephen Ashby & Co?

Design • Construction • Maintenance Southwest London and Surrey See our portfolio and book a visit calcogardens.co.uk • 07546 296 115

After more than 30 years helping people buy and sell homes in Wimbledon Village, I wanted to create an agency built around the values I believe matter most: honesty, experience and trust. I founded Stephen Ashby & Co to offer a genuinely personal service, combining decades of real-world experience with straightforward, evidence-based advice. My aim is simple: to help every client make confident decisions and achieve the very best result.

What do you enjoy most about selling homes in Wimbledon?

Wimbledon Village is a remarkable place because every road, every house and every buyer story is different. I enjoy matching people with homes that genuinely suit their lifestyle, while helping sellers present their property to attract the right buyers. Knowing the area so well means I can explain the character of each road, the schools, the green spaces and what makes one location more desirable than another. That local knowledge gives my clients a real advantage.

How do you get the best results for clients in the current market?

Achieving the best result today starts with accurate pricing, an intelligent marketing strategy and honest advice from the outset.

New and Improved Luxaflex Showroom

I combine over 30 years of negotiation and market experience with modern, targeted marketing to ensure every property reaches the right audience. Throughout the process, I keep clients fully informed, adapt to changing market conditions and negotiate firmly on their behalf.
