I love putting together our May magazines, it’s one of my favourite times of the year. Gardens are full of blooms, the calendar is filling up with festivals and social events, and we’re scouring our wardrobes to attend said social events. LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS Pride in Kingston A new LGBTQIA+ initiative will bring the Pride spirit to Kingston with a programme that includes a mix of drag expression, Pride art and mural workshops. Kingston First, the town centre’s Business Improvement District (BID), has awarded LGBTQIA+ organisation Unapologetic £5,000 of funding as part of its Town Centre Community Fund offering £30,000 in total to support projects that help to make Kingston town centre vibrant. Other successful applicants include Sky High, a Kingston street art festival which will create an open-air gallery featuring leading local, national and international artists.

Run South London Organisers of the Great North Run and Merton Council have announced London’s newest half marathon event: ‘Run South London’, which will take place in March 2027.

Celebrating a centenary

Merton artist makes her mark A nine-year-old artist from Merton Park has won recognition for her work in a London competition. Cerys San Martin-Davies impressed the judges at the Hari Hotel, which runs a renowned art prize, and was runner up. Her life-sized painting was described as playful, imaginative, and almost stole the top prize. At age six, she took part in the Royal Academy’s Young Artist Show.

The UK’S largest children’s literature festival is back from 27-28 June. Now renamed as the London Children’s Literature Festival, there will be appearances by Michael Rosen, MC Grammar, Alexander Armstrong and Russell Kane as well as Axel Scheffler and Lauren Child. The festival also offers a free Primary Schools’ Programme in the UK, providing 21,000 places for state primary school children in venues all over London. The artwork for the festival has been created by comics superstar Jamie Smart.

Merton Park Bowls Club turns 100 this year! The club has changed massively from its humble origins, originally playing on a green near what was then little more than a car park but eventually relocating to its present home in John Innes Park. Its aim is to be inclusive and open to all, and offers coaching and introductory sessions as well as taking part in school visits. There will be an Open Day on 9 May. Theme park’s newest guests Chessington World of Adventures has announced that its £15 million immersive experience, World of PAW Patrol, will open its doors to the public on 3 May. Meanwhile, Minecraft fans will be thrilled to hear that the park is also working on the world’s first Minecraft theme-park land set to open in 2027. The £50m investment will include a themed Minecraft coaster.

Surrey’s secret tunnel A 19th-century underground tunnel with links to Ada Lovelace has reopened at De Vere Horsley Estate. Lovelace, best known for writing the world’s first computer algorithm, lived at the estate’s Horsley Towers, and it is thought that she used the passageway to get around as she had agoraphobia. The 120m secret tunnel was designed for unseen trade, allowing servants and maids to transport goods across the estate without crossing paths with the aristocracy. The estate was also once home to aviation pioneer Thomas Sopwith, who was behind some of the most iconic British aircraft of the First World War.

MELANIE C Brings the heat to Kingston

Kingston is about to get seriously sweaty. As Melanie C gears up to release her new studio album SWEAT on 1 May, the town finds itself firmly on her radar: not once, but twice. With an intimate appearance in May and a return visit in September, Kingston offers fans a chance to experience this new era up close before it explodes onto bigger stages later in the year.

“Every album I’ve ever made has been a reflection of that moment in my life… and this felt like the time to really put all of those pieces together.”

It’s a fitting launchpad for a record built on connection, movement and immediacy. Because while SWEAT will thunder through major venues come autumn, its DNA is rooted in something far more visceral: the dancefloor. “I wasn’t thinking so much about people sitting at home having a listen,” Melanie says. “It was about them being on the dancefloor… wanting to motivate and inspire people.” That ethos pulses through every track. After decades at the top of British pop, first as one-fifth of the Spice Girls, then as a solo artist, Melanie C has entered a new creative phase, one shaped as much by DJ booths as recording studios, having played global festivals and holding a residency at Ibiza’s Pacha. The result is an album that feels liberated, physical and euphoric. “So many things have changed,” she explains. “Every album I’ve ever made has been a reflection of that moment in my life… and this felt like the time to really put all of those pieces together.” Those pieces stretch back further than many might expect. Long before stadium tours and chart dominance, there was a teenage Melanie discovering rave culture for the first time. “We were in Spain… and we were like, what is this music? Everybody’s so free when they’re dancing.” That sense of collective release left a lasting impression. With SWEAT, she returns to that feeling, but through a distinctly modern lens. The album draws on multi-genre house and electronic influences, mirroring the sounds she now spins as a DJ. It’s also deeply tied to her identity as a performer. “I wanted to create the music that I want to bring to life on stage,” she says. And stagecraft has always been central to her appeal. The physicality,

the energy, the unmistakable drive, traits that earned her the “Sporty Spice” moniker, are embraced here with a knowing wink. “I don’t have to live up to anything,” she says. “I am very energetic.” That spirit is perhaps best captured in the album’s title track, which she describes as a “fitness banger” – playful, punchy, and designed to get bodies moving. Elsewhere, songs like Undefeated Champion lean into empowerment, offering the kind of emotional lift that has long defined her connection with audiences. “It’s one of my anthems of self-empowerment,” she says. Crucially, Kingston audiences will be among the first to experience this material live in an intimate setting. These smaller shows, alongside her UK-wide in-store tour, offer a

different kind of access. In October, Melanie embarks on her headline tour, including a date at O2 Academy Brixton. For an artist three decades into her career, it marks a significant milestone. “I feel quite emotional about it,” she admits. “I’ve never played there as a solo artist… and at this point in my career, that means so much.” Yet even as she prepares for those larger stages, it’s clear that the intimacy of places like Kingston holds a special appeal. After years of fans travelling the world to see her perform, she’s relishing the chance to meet them where they are. “It’s really nice to be able to get to people locally,” she says. “To share that experience with them.” Asked to sum it all up, she says: “Joyous. Energetic. Fun.”  T&L

New musical takes flight Flyology tells the tale of three remarkable Surrey women - we talk to its creator about how it took shape in Surbiton and her own inspiring story of quitting a City law career to follow her creative calling…

Writer and composer Tamiko Dooley, who lives in Berrylands near Surbiton, made a bold career change after the pandemic, stepping away from a successful career as a City lawyer to pursue a long-held dream. The result is Flyology, a musical that weaves together the lives of pioneering women Ada Lovelace, Emmeline Pankhurst and Ethel Smyth. We catch up just before Flyology embarks on its first full run in London, having already wowed audiences with sold out shows at The Other Palace and Camden People's Theatre. Tamiko is understandably excited. “I always dreamt of writing a musical. I saw Jason Donovan in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat when I was a child and I adored the show. I always wondered if I could write one but I didn’t follow that path – I did languages at university and went on to law school. I loved it but when I had my two children I found I was at home more. Then Covid hit and I started writing poems…” Those poems marked a turning point. After being published, Tamiko’s writing career quickly gained momentum, leading to five books. Already an accomplished pianist, she soon began combining music and words, entering a Radio 3 carol competition, and winning. She was hooked and signed up with ATG’s Surrey Musical Theatre Development Programme. “That was really the beginning of everything, teaching me how to write a musical, how to structure it, and then giving me a platform to showcase my songs.” The programme pushed Tamiko out of her comfort zone, particularly when it came to performing her own work. “But I thought, I have nothing to lose, this is my time to push myself forward. And it worked... The creative joy you get out of the process – you bring a song, get some feedback, and make it better.” Walking through Surrey, she found inspiration in its history, particularly in the stories of women who had made a lasting impact. Surrey was a hotbed of the suffrage movement and houses in the area provided safe havens for Emmeline Pankhurst. Ada

Lovelace lived at Ockham Park and Horsley Towers. Tamiko started to create songs about them. The result of the ATG programme was Sing a Song of Surrey at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre in Woking. One of Tamiko’s songs, Don’t Look Down, was selected for the performance. But she still had lots of songs leftover and wondered if she could create a musical with them. She got in touch with her friend Cathy Farmer to work on dialogue. That collaboration led to Flyology, a story that blends history with science fiction and asks, when efficiency becomes the goal, who gets erased first? “Cathy and I were already having lots of conversations about AI and tech: the jobs it is helping and the jobs it is taking. So then we were thinking about people like Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk, and whether through AI and tech they’re changing how we view history. AI scrapes the internet for information and it won't necessarily consider all the women's stories that aren’t typically studied at school. The theme is about making your mark, your legacy, and what you want your story to be. It’s also about art and emotion. AI can replace many jobs but it cannot replace art. Art is a mirror

of the person who created it. That is the point of it.” While Lovelace and Pankhurst are widely known, Tamiko is particularly passionate about shining a light on Smyth – a composer whose influence has often been overlooked. Despite being a contemporary of Edvard Grieg and Robert Schumann, Smyth, who lived in Frimley Green and Woking, remains far less recognised today. Early rehearsals took place in Tamiko’s home, with singers volunteering their time and talent. A demo and an initial performance in a bar followed, then a chance meeting with the owner of Markson Pianos led to recording opportunities. Momentum grew quickly with workshops at Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom, and at Winchester and Lincoln universities. Now, Flyology is enjoying a full run, marking a major milestone for a project that began in a living room in Berrylands. For Tamiko, the shift from law to musical theatre has been transformative. “I miss the camaraderie and I have so many friends from my law days. But this is so completely different. This is the dream: creating and working with people who love music and want to tell stories.”  T&L

OUTDOOR OASES Take inspiration from these beautiful local gardens If you’ve ever wondered how local gardeners turn their outdoor spaces into stunning oases, open garden schemes are your chance to explore what lies behind the gates, see what thrives in these climes and maybe even get some tips from those whose green fingers have created these inspiring plots.

Ham Open Gardens On 17 May, take a wander between 20 stunning gardens around Ham. Rachel has been involved in the scheme since around 2007. She notes that the area does incredibly well in terms of fruit trees such as fig and apple. Highlights of her garden include an incredible magnolia, salvia and foxgloves as well as a prolific display of roses. Other gardens taking part include Sudbrook Lodge. The garden is arranged in two distinct parts, bisected by the house, in a way that reflects its 1660 origins while still functioning as a relaxed, family-friendly space. With established planting including willow, acacia and wisteria, it balances structure and softness. Meanwhile, another participant, Julia, has a courtyard garden of pleached hornbeams, potted ferns and lime trees to create a soft symmetry between the road and brick wall. The space is enhanced by climbing roses, jasmine, wisteria, a fig tree and a magnolia. Langham House Estate Open Garden has a simple lawn and minimal borders to show the contrast between two distinct architectural periods: Langham House, built in 1709 in the Queen Anne style, and the Brutalist style of the mid-century flats.

Barnes Open Gardens On 31 May, some 20 gardens, from large leafy spaces to hidden courtyards, will open up to the public. FiSH will operate a free bus between the gardens, which vary from Victorian plots to modern gardens as well as some stunning specimen trees to see. Afternoon teas will be served in the Barnes Green Centre.

London Open Gardens There are over 120 gardens taking part on 6-7 June across the capital. Weekend ticket holders also have access to the Behind the Scenes events such as a head gardener’s tour of Fulham Palace; a walk discovering the fruit trees that thrive in South London, from persimmons to medlars, and the historic Mulberry Garden at Hogarth’s House in Chiswick.

Kingswood, Tadworth and Walton Open Gardens There are around 10 gardens open to the public on 13-14 June. Marian’s beautiful outdoor space includes wisteria and a tranquil water feature. She says: “My garden is my safe space. Starting off in 1975 with a blank canvas of an overgrown field that the previous owner used to burn every summer to keep the undergrowth down, it has developed into a fine garden as my knowledge improved and understanding of horticulture expanded. I love to be out there as much as I can. It relaxes me and I can lose myself in the garden jobs. In short it is my peace.” Keith has created stunning displays in his borders with bright pops of tulips among several varieties of daffodils. He says: “I have gardened all my life and I couldn’t live without one. It is my sanity where I can relax and unwind, enjoying all the scents.”  T&L

THE BEST OF FOUNDATIONS How to set your child up for success What does success really mean for today’s families? The answer is deeply personal, yet the journey towards it shares powerful common ground. The education landscape in the UK is undertaking a fluid examination of what it means to prepare children for success in life, and what the definition of success involves. Current government education plans centre the ideas of building resilience from a young age, in order to prepare children for the ever-shifting social landscape. From academic pathways like the 11 Plus to creative ambitions in the arts, and from confidence-building to unlocking individual potential, schools are working to ensure their students are equipped for the life ahead of them. This varies from identifying strengths to making the most of the resources and support systems available, including tutors, enrichment programmes, and specialist services.

Academic Pathways According to Public Health England, there is some evidence that academic attainment is linked to health later in life, as those who succeed academically are more likely to be healthy, with longer life expectancy, than those whose results are not so strong.

If you're going for the private school pathway, ensuring your child is prepared for the 11 Plus is one of the first big milestones in preparing them for academic success. Advice says to begin prepping your child for the 11 Plus in Year 4, giving

them two years to prepare for the exam, making it a marathon, not a sprint. In Year 4, children can be introduced to key principles of maths, practice basic comprehension, study techniques for creative writing and get accustomed to reasoning questions. It is also important to prioritise reading from a young age. Children who read a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction tend to perform better academically. Creative Arts Building your child’s creative skills can help to build emotional resilience, a key aspect of preparing for later success both personally and professionally. Communication and expression are the ways children share their responses to what they see and experience. In February 2026, the government announced new long-term reforms to the SEND system, moving it towards a ‘tiered’ approach: universal, targeted, targeted plus, and specialist support. Every child with extra needs will have a digital Individual Support Plan, tracking their needs, daily support, and

progress, and this will be made accessible to parents and teachers. The aim of the policy is to push for greater inclusion in mainstream settings, ensuring children with additional needs are not isolated from their peers, and are therefore set up for greater success later in life. Parents of children with extra needs may also want to look at support outside of the school setting. Dining at Bombay Delight is always…well, a delight. Those who are familiar with the popular Wimbledon restaurant’s well-loved repertoire of authentic Indian dishes will be pleased to know they have a new offering available: the Tamil Nadu Food Festival. This limited edition special menu celebrates the vibrant gastronomic culture of South India, balancing bold spices and fragrant curries, with dishes of crispy dosa, Chettinad specialties, and tangy sambars. I went along

We were very full after such a feast, but managed to squeeze in dessert. The Gulab Jamun cake was the perfect sweet treat to end the night on: lightly crusted on top with a soft-syrup soaked centre, flavoured with saffron and cardamom.

Next came a delicious mini masala dosa stuffed with spiced potato filling and served with chutneys and sambar. The dosa was excellent and we couldn’t get enough of the sambar; however the stand-out for this course had to be the Eral Varuval: spicy South Indian style prawns pan-fried with aromatic spices and fresh curry leaves. The prawns were succulent and spiced to perfection, a veritable explosion of flavour. When it came to curry, it was recommended to us to try the Nandu Kulambu, fresh crab simmered in a tangy tamarind and tomatobased sauce. While you need to work a

After having polished off some poppadoms, our first course arrived in the form of Gobi 65: delightfully spiced cauliflower florets, perfectly crisped alongside a slightly sweet dip that proved the perfect accompaniment. Each floret is ideally bite-sized and packed with flavour.
