Everyone is breathing a sigh of relief that January is done. Nights are getting lighter (yes, really), the weather, well, who knows what it will be when you’re reading this, but whether you went Dry January or Dry Martini, you got through. February, thankfully, brings much to look forward to. Our Diary is your carefully curated guide to the weeks ahead, with even more inspiration online — from the best places to celebrate Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day, to clever ways of keeping children happily occupied over half term (a modern miracle). This month we also delve into the biggest fitness trends of the year ahead. Think sociable classes, proper recovery time and, joy of joys, the pleasure of spending time in a sauna. Wellness, it seems, has grown up, and learned to relax. One particularly tempting trend is the retreat: whether that’s a back-

If wedding bells are ringing this year, you’ll be pleased to hear that ceremonies are becoming more bespoke than ever. The rulebook is well and truly optional: it’s all about creating something deeply personal.

LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS Artist’s TV spotlight Wimbledon-based landscape painter Alison Clarke recently appeared on Sky Arts in the Sky Landscape Artist of the Year 2026 competition. Her recent painting Ever Mine, inspired by Wimbledon Common, was shortlisted for both the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Royal West of England Academy Autumn Exhibition, gaining recognition for its depth, texture, and expressive semi-abstract style. Alison was selected as one of just eight “pod” artists to compete in her televised heat, following a national selection process. The competition challenges artists to create work under intense time pressure while being filmed and assessed by judges, with a £10,000 commission prize. “Being part of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year has always been a dream,” says Alison, who has lived and worked in Wimbledon for over 15 years. “It’s an honour to be selected, and I’m excited to see how the experience pushes my work forward.” Regardless of the outcome, she views the opportunity as part of her journey. “This experience is about growth and staying true to my practice,” she adds. “It’s one step in a much bigger picture.”

Tennis expansion plans Campaign group Save Wimbledon Park gathered in late January to head to the High Court. The group's supporters all met at Wimbledon and Southfields stations before heading to the Royal Courts of Justice for the proceedings. The case will run until 23 January. All updates will be on our website.

Empowering communities Citizen Hub Wimbledon opened its doors to the public for an open day in January, inviting local residents, community organisations, businesses and partners to explore the space and help shape what the Hub becomes. Citizen Hub is a locally led movement that brings together citizens, local businesses, services and organisations under one roof to strengthen communities and enable long term social and economic resilience. Citizen Hub Wimbledon will become the second Citizen Hub in the UK, following the success of the original pilot in Cambridgeshire. The St Neots Citizen Hub has been featured on BBC’s The One Show and showcased to The King and Queen. In its first phase, the St Neots Hub engaged with over 3,000 local people, supported more than 700 residents through social prescribing, skills and support services, and helped generate over 200 jobs in the local economy.

Celebrating 40 years! Congratulations to Wimbledon Bridge Club which is marking its 40th anniversary with a special week in April with various bridge sessions and an anniversary supper. It was founded by John Gullick, whose ethos was that bridge was a game to enjoy by all, that everyone should be treated equally and that teaching was important – ideals the club stands by today. Back then there was a dress code and people could smoke at the tables! WBC now has around 800 members ranging in experience from complete beginners to highly experienced county standard players. There is also a teaching programme, mentoring and visitors are welcome. Read more at www.timeandleisure.co.uk

LISA FAULKNER The actor and presenter tells us about her local roots in SW London and Surrey, her life lessons and returning to the stage in Single White Female isa Faulkner is back on stage

the first time in 21 years, L for starring as Allie in the worldpremiere stage adaptation of Single White Female, the cult 90s psychological thriller reimagined for the age of social media. After opening in January, the production tours the UK before its spring run at Woking and Richmond. For Lisa, it is something of a homecoming. Born in Merton, raised in Kingston and Esher, educated at Tiffin Girls, and with family still scattered across Wimbledon, Claygate and Hampton Court, Lisa’s local roots run deep. “I live in North London, but I grew up in Kingston, and I know Richmond very, very well,” she says warmly. “I used to go and see the Rocky Horror Show at Richmond Theatre. I’ve seen loads of different things there all through my life. It’s a beautiful theatre and I’m excited to be playing there.”

A thriller for the Instagram age

The new adaptation, written by journalist and broadcaster Rebecca Reid, updates the original 1992 film, starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It follows the tale of Allie, a recently divorced mum, balancing being a single parent with the launch of her tech start up. She advertises for a lodger – enter Hedy (played by Kym Marsh) who seems like she will be the perfect housemate until it all starts to take a dark turn. Says Lisa: “The film was a really big deal when it came out. I saw it in the cinema and I loved it. The play brings it up to date, using social media and making the characters older.”

©Ori Jones

“When I was reading the play, I couldn’t wait to read on to the next part. I think the tension really works… there will be jump scares for the audience but it will be a fun thing to watch.” And yes, the iconic stiletto scene is safe. “There’s definitely still the stiletto,” she laughs

10

Lisa, now 53, found fame through roles in Holby City, Murder in Suburbia, Spooks and more recently Netflix’s Missing You. Her last stage role was The Vagina Monologues. “I’m really looking forward

to being back on stage… to have that rehearsal time to really find your character and have a backstory which in TV, you don’t get.. you’re so quickly on to the next scene…” Is she apprehensive? “I am slightly nervous, but they are excited nerves,” she admits. “I remember last time I would be nervous and then love it so I’m determined to see the excitement in it and the challenge. To have a challenge at this age is great.”

Growing up in SW London and Surrey

Lisa’s relationship with south west London is marked by warmth and nostalgia. She lights up talking about her early life. “I feel like I had a pretty idyllic childhood. I was born in Wimbledon and my dad lives there now. And to grow up in Kingston and the surrounding areas… it was beautiful. As soon as I come down the motorway or the A3… it’s a bit like Christmas to me. It’s just got this lovely haze to it with my childhood so I love it.”

Single White Female ©Chris Bishop - picturesbybish

School life at Tiffin Girls wasn’t always easy, she admits. “I think I shouldn’t really have gone to Tiffin’s. I feel like I wasn’t clever enough… but I have really fond memories and I met one of my best friends forever.” But Lisa’s life took a tragic turn when she was 16 with the death of her mother from cancer. “Until my mum got ill, I think me and my sister, my parents, my grandparents, we had a very normal but very lovely life,” she reflects. The teenager went on to pursue her love of acting that was first fired in drama classes at school, having initially landed a modelling contract. “I got an opportunity to do something different, and I went for it.”

from my Mother for my Daughter, passes on that shared love for food. “We’d be talking at breakfast about what we were having for lunch and talking at lunch about what we were having for dinner,” Lisa laughs.

Food and family

Her dream dinner party – who would be on the guest list? “Stanley Tucci,” she answers instantly. “Then maybe I’d get an invite back to his. And Kym [Marsh] – I’m looking forward to working with her on the play.” As for the menu: “a roast chicken with a crème fraîche and tarragon sauce… stick a glass of wine in it at the end...delicious.”

Today, Lisa’s world revolves around family, food and a sense of gratitude. Her daughter Billie, adopted in 2008 with her thenhusband Chris Coghill, is now 19. “I pass on to her all the time the message that life is short… and to do what she wants to do. She travels… she’ll work in the pub and make money and then she’ll go off somewhere wonderful. And I say, ‘just grab it, your career will be waiting’. You can still do all of that, but to travel and see the world is an education that’s quite amazing.” Food is woven through every chapter of Lisa’s life. She grew up in a family of passionate cooks, and remembers fondly her mother’s cooking. Lisa’s book, Recipes

Winning Celebrity MasterChef in 2010 was transformative for Lisa and made her pursue cooking as part of her career path. She has gone on to write five cookbooks and present John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen with her husband, the chef John Torode. “I think people get the best of both worlds,” she says of cooking with John. “They get all his knowledge… and I always make things into tips or little hacks.”

Words of wisdom

As Lisa looks back on her life and career, she says that her fifties have marked a shift. “I’m easier on myself since turning 50,” she says. After losing her mother at 44, reaching midlife has brought perspective rather than pressure. “I feel like I changed because I sort of think, God, I’m really lucky to be here.”

Fitness for Lisa means morning dog walks with nine-year-old Rory. “She is just so joyful. My motto is, ‘be more Rory’ because she greets every day as a new day, always with a wag of the tail!” Lisa also enjoys yoga – her sister teaches it – but hates the gym. “I’ve had so many gym memberships and never used them. I also try and eat well and I cook everything pretty much from scratch. Not everything, but I do try. I don’t want to be extra super fit. I just want to be healthy and look after myself. I suppose that’s the difference now.” Reflecting on her teen years, what would she say to her younger self? “ I would say, ‘you are allowed.’ I spent a lot of my time thinking, ‘you don’t deserve this’ or ‘you shouldn’t be doing this.’ And I feel like whispering in my younger self’s ear, ‘you’re allowed, it’s okay.’” She went on to defy her inner critic to play a number of top roles and carve out a whole new career out of her passion for cooking. Her favourite role was in Missing You, where she gleefully recalls “running around to free people, kill somebody and wield an axe.” But she suspects Allie may top it. “This is a good one,” she smiles. “I’m really looking forward to playing Allie.”  T&L

Modern Romance Throw out the rulebook as contemporary weddings embrace individuality

Versatile style

Beautiful, most definitely, but today’s bridal gowns are also expressive. Lace is reimagined in sculptural styles, big bows add drama. Two-piece bridal looks are popular with corset-style tops designed to be worn again. Designer Phillipa Lepley points to the rise of detachable trains, overskirts, removeable lace layers, sleeves and capes that allow brides to transform their look throughout the day whilst keeping their main dress on, adding romance for ceremonies and removed to reveal a cleaner silhouette for the evening.

Cakes, reimagined

Cakes are tapping into nostalgia with ruffles and the highly-ornate Lambeth style of icing. Meanwhile, sheet cakes are taking over from the traditional multi-tiered look. Tiramisu is emerging as a dessert hero, either to replace the cake, served as a sheet with a personal message on top, or in a tower of Champagne coupes. © Phillipa Lepley Couture

Old meets new

Weddings are being reimagined in all sorts of ways. But while tradition doesn’t have to be followed, couples are looking back to past eras for inspiration. Stately home weddings are coveted but they are given a contemporary touch with fabric installations and flowing seating arrrangements. The “Bridgerton Effect” continues to ripple through with Regency looks, but Art Deco makes for a bolder period style.

Bespoke everything

Personalisation starts with the invitations and there are ever more innovative ways to announce the wedding. Tactile invites are a big trend for the year ahead, using materials and metals, and often finished with a handwritten note. Wedding newspapers are replacing the usual order-of service, and audio guest books invite guests to leave a message for the couple. The after-party is also being reconsidered to reflect the personalities of the newlyweds.

Jewellery with a story

Heirloom jewels and bespoke pieces with meaning are the direction for wedding jewellery. Jewellery is a big deal for grooms too with statement lapel pins, brooches and cufflinks.

Cinematic approach

Wedding photography is moving away from posed group shops to a more fluid, candid style. Dramatic backdrops are in demand with editorial style shoots providing a high-end contemporary approach. Running alongside that is a more lo-fi style tapping into the trend for retro camcorders.  T&L

Floristry is embracing a more natural, sculptural approach that allows nature to lead the form, says Lavender Green Flowers. Large-scale installations make a statement using suspended florals and architectural structures. Sustainability remains key, evolving beyond local sourcing to include seasonal planting and reusable natural materials that offer longevity after the wedding. Colour palettes soften for the year ahead, led by Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Cloud Dancer. Whites and greens dominate spring and summer weddings, where masses of a single variety, such as hydrangeas, peonies or anemones, create a dramatic effect. Look to deeper tones, including crimson, rich reds and forest greens, for autumn and winter.

WOMEN on the

RISE Women in Business Special

Visibly Brilliant How to shine a light on your talents

Ahead of International Women’s Day in March, we’re looking e p ho t an at how to make sure Esther S you’re letting the world know about your abilities. For this edition and next, we’re putting the spotlight on leading women from south west London and Surrey to hear their inspiring stories of success. And we look forward to meeting many more of you at our event on 5 March. This is a great way to talk about your work and your achievements with others. It is all part of becoming ‘visibly brilliant’ Esther Stanhope, a previous speaker at our events, and author of Visibly Brilliant, points out that many people are excellent at what they do, and yet don’t get the recognition they deserve. Esther has some great tips on how to be seen, heard and rewarded without becoming loud, salesy or fake...

1 Lose your invisibility cloak!

If you’re working harder than everyone else but staying quietly brilliant, congratulations — you’re an Invisible Superhero. Bad news? No one promotes superheroes they can’t see. Are you wearing (safe) dark colours and blending into the background? Maybe add a splash of colour! Visible brilliance starts when you step out of the shadows and into the spotlight so people can see the magic.

2 Just one thing a day

You don’t need to climb a mountain and become Visibly Brilliant overnight. It takes time. You just need one tiny act of visibility a day — a comment, a story, a share on social, a question in a meeting. Little and often wins the visibility race. No personality transplant required.

3 It’s not showing off

Here’s the secret: your personal stories sell your brilliance without feeling icky. If you share your life lessons in an engaging way, people around you will appreciate it. Instead of listing achievements, SHARE what you’ve learned, what surprised you, or what went wrong. People remember stories — not CVs.

4

Find an ally

Even the most confident people get help — trust me. Find an ally, a cheerleader, a visibility buddy who nudges you forward when fear kicks in. Confidence isn’t born. It’s built — with backup. Could be a coach, or a friend. Make sure they ‘get’ you.

5 Create your own buzz

Pick one big thing a year to talk about — a project, promotion, launch or idea — and make some noise around it. Visibility loves focus. Give people something to remember you for….just one thing at a time is easier to manage. 

The People Business Meet Sandra Porter and the award-winning HR team expanding into Wimbledon. Why did our Women in Business feature resonate with you?

“Because we are an awesome group of women in business! We work extremely hard to support our clients while maintaining a keen eye on our work-life balance. I think many women in business strive to drive a successful career in something that they are passionate about, while also juggling many balls and family commitments. This resonates with the core of our culture. We love what we do, but life is precious. I even write into everyone’s contract that they must not miss a family event, e.g., a child’s sports day, because those moments are priceless.” - Sandra Porter, Managing Director

Please tell us about your business and what problems you solve?

“At the HR Dept, we help business owners sleep at night! Nothing keeps business owners awake more at night than people drama. The issues can be emotionally charged, fraught with risk and tricky to navigate. We offer personal, practical, outsourced HR support to small and medium-sized businesses. We are our clients’ trusted advisor on all things people - from day-to-day employee advice and compliance support through to strategic people planning at board level. We work across a wide range of sectors and support all stages of growth from start-up and beyond!” - Kirsty Hammatt, Director of HR Services

What skills and new ideas do you and your team bring to this role?

“We are always developing our skills to ensure that we are the trusted experts that our clients need. In addition to becoming accredited as mental health first aiders, Unseen Aware allies, and psychometric practitioners, we have also been upskilling our team in sustainability, data protection, trauma-informed investigations, and artificial intelligence.” - Cat Hinchliffe, HR Business Partner

What do you love about your job?

“The impact. We see, first-hand, the difference good people management makes. Often it’s taking a business owner from feeling overwhelmed and isolated to feeling confident and supported. Watching both businesses and individuals grow as a result of that partnership is incredibly

rewarding. I love it.” - Donna Gray, HR Advisor

What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?

“Starting the business from scratch with two children under 3 years old, as a single mum, was challenging. But I’ve never looked back, and my son and daughter have learned a lot about the value of money and the importance of a strong work ethic.” - Sandra Porter, Managing Director

What’s been your proudest moment so far?

“There are many, but winning both Excellence in Professional Services and Best Place to Work awards at the Kingston Borough Business Awards has been incredibly special. Being recognised not only for the service we provide to clients, but also for the culture we’ve built internally, really validated everything we stand for.” Sandra Porter, Managing Director

What trends are you expecting to see in 2026?

“With significant employment law changes on the horizon and the trajectory of employment disputes, we are going to be super busy! Businesses are realising that they need to be far more proactive than ever before. In 2026, we expect strategic people planning, savvy dispute management and the strength of manager

capability to become even more critical for business success.” - Billie-Jade Locke, HR Support

What advice would the team give to women starting their careers or building a business today?

“I started my career at HR Dept as an HR Administrator and I’ve progressed through to Director level. You don’t have to have all the answers on day one. Just take the next step. Confidence grows through experience, support and asking the right questions. Find people who will challenge you, back you and grow with you. If people are ‘nay-sayers’, keep them at arm's length and surround yourself with people that can genuinely help and challenge you.” Kirsty Hammatt, Director of HR Services

What’s next for you and your team?

“World domination, well, maybe Wimbledon domination. We’ve recently expanded into Wimbledon and New Malden, which is an exciting next chapter. Our focus now is on building relationships with the local business community and seeing how we can make their lives easier.” - Sandra Porter, Managing Director

Ballet Meets Pilates Olivia Boda, founder of Good Toes Ballet, on her new Pilates classes for adults. What inspired you to start Good Toes School of Ballet?

When I was a professional dancer I wasn’t very interested in teaching. But after having children I really felt the attraction of passing on all the knowledge and experience I had accrued.

Tell us about your new Pilates offerings.

Ballet and Pilates are a match made in heaven! Throughout my career I have used elements of Pilates to support technique. My ballet conditioning classes were becoming more like a Pilates class, so I realised I ought to get my certification and do things properly! Now we are teaching STOTT based Pilates for adults along with our adult ballet classes.

Spotlight on Senior Leadership Interview with Mrs Gemma Anderson, Head of Homefield Prep School How does it feel to be the first female Head at Homefield Prep?

Invigorating! It feels like a real time of opportunity here at Homefield, and I’m honoured to lead the school into its next chapter as the first female Head.

What has your career journey been?

I’m a career teacher, as they say, and have always worked in the independent sector. I’ve been fortunate to work at some amazing schools with inspirational staff and pupils. I started my career at Greenfield School in Woking, where I could see my classroom from my living room window! Then, I moved to Guildford High Junior School followed by Kensington Prep School. After six years in all-girls’ education, I moved into my first senior leadership role at Rokeby School, where I spent just shy of a decade.

What are your main plans for the school?

understand the demands and needs of the modern parent and offer free wraparound care from 7:30am every day. We offer 73 clubs each week which extends the day until 5pm for Reception and above. We have wraparound care on-site until 6pm and free on-street parking in the vicinity, meaning parents can commute with ease. Our flexible bus routes, including a late bus, make the school accessible for families travelling from Wimbledon, Epsom, Carshalton, Purley, Worcester Park and the surrounding areas.

decisions that balance academic ambition, pastoral care and the long-term sustainability of the school.

We are now a 3–11 school, with a reopened nursery offering specialist teaching from the Early Years all the way through in French, ICT, music, drama, PE and STEAM. Outdoor learning has become an integral part of the Early Years curriculum, with weekly sessions on site and bi-weekly visits to the community garden, Your Space, at Sears Park. We are also excited to be offering a coeducational 0–3 nursery provision on site, run by Orchard Childcare, from summer 2026.

What facilities does the school have?

To grab each and every opportunity when it presents itself. When I was completing my PGCE, my tutor told me that there is always something to learn. Keeping that in mind has really helped me broach every opportunity with a positive outlook and as a learning opportunity – something we try to instil in the boys here at Homefield.

Why should parents choose Homefield Prep?

The evolving education landscape has sharpened our focus on supporting boys and their individual needs. This has guided us in making practical, considered

My goal is to open the doors to the school and make it a welcoming environment where any boy can feel at home. The school has a wonderful, rich history but has long been one of south-west London’s best-kept secrets. I’m very keen to put us firmly on the map and show people all that we have to offer.

It has been a rapid time of change for the school – could you explain what’s new?

Our outstanding results, excellent pastoral care and specialist teaching. We

We have completed a major transformation in recent years, including new high-spec classrooms, a performance hall, specialist science, STEAM and ICT labs, a music suite, an Art and DT lab, two libraries, a Wellbeing Hub, and enhanced outdoor spaces including an adventure playground and MUGA, creating an environment where boys learn, create and thrive.

How is the school responding to new challenges in the education landscape?

Our close proximity and strong track record of success to several leading independent and grammar schools helps us stay outward-looking and responsive in a competitive and evolving education landscape.

What advice would you give women looking to start a career in senior leadership?

Being solutions-focused, really listening and being flexible, allows you to solve problems in a unique way.

Staying Empowered

Shaima Don’s Empowering Women Series invites women to step fully into their lives In a world where professional success is often celebrated but inner wellbeing remains unspoken, Shaima Coaching is pioneering spaces where women can connect, support and grow. Led by transformational coach Shaima Don, the Empowering Women Series offers powerful connections and thoughtprovoking conversations that invite women to step fully into their lives with clarity and courage. The six-part series explores topics ranging from identity and relationships to emotional regulation and self-trust, with each workshop designed to stand alone while also opening the door to deeper transformational work. A key focus of the programme is supporting women from cultural backgrounds who often struggle to recognise their own worth during pivotal life moments - particularly around pre-nups, separation, and divorce. Previous sessions include Include Yourself in the Conversations, where participants

unpacked conditioning around money, boundaries and self-expression, and explored how cultural narratives can shape the way women advocate for themselves in relationships and decisions. The workshop brought together like-minded women in a supportive environment, creating space for clarity, confidence, and choice. Next Up – 19th February: Life After GLP-1 After GLP-1: Sustainable Weight, Nutrition & Nervous System Reset addresses an emerging area of interest among women navigating health, body image and nervous system regulation. Rather than positioning weight or diet as goals, Shaima’s approach reframes wellbeing through nervous system safety, nourishment and long-term sustainability while empowering women to let go of quick fixes and embrace self-trust. Why This Matters? Many women find that stress, triggers, and uncertainty shape their relationship with food. Shaima’s work moves beyond managing symptoms, helping women feel

safe in their own bodies so they can show up fully both personally and professionally without food or fear becoming the regulator. Upcoming topics include intimacy, boundaries, forgiveness and family dynamics. 1:1 sessions are also available for those wanting a deep dive into transformation.

Lettings Leader

Meet Tracy Bowler, the customer focused, multi-tasking Lettings Manager at Hawes & Co. - Sales, Lettings and Property Management experts What does success look like to you in your role at Raynes Park, beyond the numbers?

Success for me is getting the job done, especially on the days when everything feels challenging. No two days are ever the same in lettings — you can start the morning with a perfectly planned diary and within minutes everything has changed. It can be stressful at times, but that’s what makes it so rewarding. When you manage to adapt, problem-solve, and still deliver a great outcome for clients, that’s when I feel most successful.

What achievement in your career are you most proud of?

Being promoted and recognised for my hard work is something I’m very proud of. It showed me that consistency, commitment, and genuinely caring about what you do doesn’t go unnoticed, and it gave me confidence to keep pushing myself forward.

How do you balance strong business results with genuine care for clients?

For me, it always comes back to putting the client first. It’s about prioritising properly, taking the time to sit down and talk, and really getting to know people on a personal level. When clients feel listened to and understood, the results naturally follow.

What do you think sets your leadership style apart and makes you such an asset to the business?

I’m very approachable and bubbly, and I believe in being personal. I’d much rather pick up the phone than hide behind an email. Making people feel heard and valued creates trust and gives them a genuinely positive experience.

What advice would you give to women looking to build confidence and progress in the property industry? Smile every day. Enjoy what you do,

stay positive, and confidence will come with it.

What do you love about what you do? I love the feeling of getting a property online and seeing it successfully let. I’m also incredibly lucky to work with such a great team — everyone gets on so well, and we’ve shared some brilliant experiences together.

FITNESS TRENDS TO KNOW What will get your pulse racing this year?

1 Find your tribe

Community-led fitness is booming, offering both physical and mental health benefits. Parkrun was an early pioneer but there are now many more ways to get fit with likeminded others, from outdoor swimming groups drawn together over a shared love for cold water dips, and specialised fitness holidays connecting solo travellers for the likes of paddleboarding and coastal walking. Meanwhile, global hit HYROX fitness racing (eight exercise stations are interspersed with 1km runs) has created a huge and loyal following who love the camaraderie.

2 Pilates, perfected

Pilates continues its reign, but it’s evolving. As Claire Mills, founder of Core LDN, explains, the next wave is more precise, more personalised and more time-efficient. Expect express formats: 20 to 30-minute micro-sessions designed around specific outcomes such as posture correction, core strength or back care. At the same time, Pilates is getting stronger. Studios are integrating heavier springs into Reformer to build strength. Smaller class sizes and oneon-one sessions allow for an individualised approach that focus on precision.

3

Strength training

All age groups and fitness levels are realising the benefits: not only for building muscle mass but looking after bone density too. Body weight exercises are a great start but for bigger gains look to free weights and machines. To make it more accessible, clubs are responding with low-pressure environments; and the likes of EGYM equipment that automatically sets up the correct weight and configuration for each

user. Meanwhile, Les Mills’ has expanded its popular BodyPump class to include BodyPump Heavy for those looking for more muscle-building routines.

4 Feel the heat

While hot yoga has been around for a long time, other exercise classes are increasingly turning up the heat, too, with the idea it boosts endorphins and enables you to stretch more easily. Infrared Pilates and hot spin classes are gaining a big following – but caution needs to be taken as they are not suitable for all and you may need to build up slowly.

5 Walk the walk

Interval walking (also known as Japanese Walking) alternates between three minutes of fast walking and three

minutes of slow walking over around 30 minutes. It was a TikTok craze last year and its popularity continues. There’s also the 12-3-30 walk on a treadmill (12 percent incline at three miles per hour for 30 minutes). Beginners should build up cautiously. Or try rucking: walking or hiking with a weighted backpack.

6 Getting personal

We’re increasingly using tech to monitor and motivate our exercise. This will be a big focus going forward as we look to the likes of bio-syncing so we work out according to our circadian rhythms and hormonal changes.

7 Recovery as ritual

The ‘no pain, no gain’ attitude is thankfully long gone and we’re paying proper attention to what our bodies need. Rest and recovery are increasingly an essential part of our regimes with a big emphasis on sports massage, physio, infrared-aided recovery and contrast therapies: think infrared saunas paired with ice baths, enjoyed solo or socially. Expect to see sauna rituals elevated including the growing popularity of German Aufguss where essential-oil-infused water is poured onto the sauna’s hot stones and rhythmical towel movements used to circulate the fragrant air – sometimes accompanied by music and light.  T&L

Brain Health Assessment

Questions & Answers with Dr Aijaz Khan, Consultant Neurologist Why is brain health something we should all think about? Brain health underpins how we think, remember, move and live independently. According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, up to 98% of people can take steps to lower their future risk of dementia. That statistic is powerful because it reminds us that brain health is not just about disease, it is about prevention, awareness and long-term wellbeing. What is a brain health assessment? A brain health assessment is a structured, medical evaluation of how well your brain is functioning now, and what risks may exist for the future. We start with a detailed medical history, discussing memory, concentration and any neurological symptoms. We also consider risk factors for conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. What does the assessment involve? Following the consultation, we carry out a neurological examination to ensure the nervous system is functioning as expected. This is combined with cognitive testing to assess memory and thinking skills. Blood tests are important too, as factors such as vitamin B12 deficiency or thyroid problems can affect brain function. Imaging, usually an MRI scan, allows us to look for changes such as brain shrinkage, circulation issues, inflammation or evidence of previous small strokes. What are the benefits and limitations? The benefit is clarity. An assessment can reassure, identify reversible problems, or highlight areas where lifestyle or medical intervention may reduce future risk. It is not about predicting the future with certainty, but about informed, proactive care. For many people, that knowledge is empowering and supports better long-term brain health.

Currently we are offering our brain health assessments for just £1,499 - For more information visit medneo.co.uk/brain-health-assessment-london

‘We love being able to invite so many great musicians from international stars to local groups in the festival and bringing the enjoyment of wonderful music to Barnes’. Andrew Summers, Chairman.

Marking International Women’s Day (8 March), Fieri Consort present Freeing the Muse, an imaginative programme celebrating Renaissance women as composers, performers, and creative forces. Acclaimed for their vivid interpretations of early music, the ensemble explores how women shaped the sound world of late Renaissance Italy - not as passive muses, but as influential artists whose voices drew audiences from across Europe and transformed courtly musical life.

Hannah Ely. “People travelled across Italy to hear them sing, composers wrote specifically for their voices, and whole courts competed to attract them.’

REVIEW:

ORION, WIMBLEDON VILLAGE We check out the new opening from Alex Webb Given that January is traditionally a lean month for restaurants, it was striking to find Orion packed to the rafters on a bitterly cold winter’s evening. Whether it was curiosity that had drawn half of Wimbledon Village through the door, or the pull of repeat visits since the restaurant quietly opened in December, either explanation feels entirely plausible. This confident new opening on the former site of The Light House is the work of Alex Webb, winner of MasterChef: The Professionals, who has worked at restaurants such as Hélène Darroze at The Connaught and Frog by Adam Handling. Orion is a French-inspired, British seafoodled restaurant – the name references the Orion constellation, symbolising the three men who have inspired Alex’s love of cooking – his late father and two grandfathers. There’s an open kitchen that allows you to watch Alex commanding the pass, and a fish counter hints at the quality of the seafood sourcing. Tables are close together but that seems to add to a convivial atmosphere. We were welcomed by charming, knowledgeable front-of-house staff who struck exactly the right balance between attentiveness and ease. There was certainly no sign of Dry January or Veganuary on our visit. The room was buzzing: cocktails being shaken, seafood plates landing on tables, steaks being carved, and more than one eyecatching caramel tart drifting past. We joined in with the spirit – and began with cocktails – a Negroni and a Pisco Sour, both difficult to get right, and both absolutely first class. It set the tone for what followed.

All photos © A Dash and a Splash

To start, Alex’s signature lobster and prawn toast arrived crisp and generous, layered with black sesame and with a lime, chilli and carrot purée that lifted the dish beautifully. It was fresh, indulgent and perfectly judged. We also tried slow-cooked pig cheek with truffle and potato purée, super-tender and elevated by the earthy truffle. For the main event, we shared one of the fishes of the day – a glorious Dover sole (£70), expertly cooked and doused in herbed butter and shrimp. Other dishes on offer included the likes of hispi cabbage-wrapped cod fillet with pickled kohlrabi, seaweed powder, white bean cassoulet and dill oil, making it clear that this is a menu you could happily explore again and again. Sides were a highlight in their own right. Slow-cooked butter-thyme potatoes with Parmesan were slabs of utterly moreish

deliciousness – while mixed wild greens with house dressing were vibrant, fresh and perfectly cooked. The wine list is refreshingly reasonable, starting at £39, but nudging into the upper middle rewards you well. We followed a recommendation of Domaine Guerrin Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Les Crays, which paired beautifully with the buttery richness of the fish dish (though we would happily have welcomed a touch more sauce). Dessert was non-negotiable. We chose Alex’s “Twix” – tonka bean shortbread layered with salted caramel, dark chocolate and served with crème fraîche ice cream – as well as the passion fruit parfait with dark chocolate mirror glaze. Similar in appearance, both finished with delicate gold leaf, yet worlds apart in flavour. Each was thoughtful, indulgent: the Twix a big hit with my sweettoothed guest, while I liked the contrast of the passion fruit with the chocolate. Service throughout was excellent: warm and polished, even with a full room and the pressure of two evening sittings. There was a slight overlap in the middle, with some guests waiting for tables, but the bar provides a comfortable spot to enjoy a drink and a snack while you wait. Orion is a brilliant addition to the Wimbledon Village dining scene – a restaurant that feels both neighbourhood and special occasion. We left already planning our next meal.  T&L

THE RENTERS’ RIGHTS ACT IS COMING. Is Your Letting Agent Ready — or Just Chasing Commission?

The private rental sector is changing. With the forthcoming Renters’ Rights Act, landlords face the biggest shift in legislation for a generation, new responsibilities, new risks, and far less room for error. Now more than ever, who you choose to represent, let and manage your property matters. Many agencies are driven by negotiators’ commission: quick lets, rushed tenants, and little thought for long-term compliance or asset protection. When legislation tightens, that approach leaves landlords exposed. We work differently. We are an agency built around knowledge, compliance, and genuine landlord advocacy and not sales targets.

CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY with our Special 5 course menu

Why landlords should choose an agent who understands the Renters’ Rights Act: • Proactive compliance – We stay ahead of legislative change, not scrambling after it. • Risk reduction – Proper tenant selection, correct processes, and clear documentation protect you. • Long-term returns – Stable tenancies and well-managed properties outperform quick wins. • Aligned interests – Our advice is based on what’s right for you, not what earns a negotiator an extra commission. The Renters’ Rights Act will reward informed landlords — and expose poorly advised ones. Choose an agency that understands the law, respects your investment, and works for you — not their commission. Because in a changing market, expertise isn’t optional. It’s essential.

HOMES

POTENTIAL BY DESIGN Considered renovations that will enhance how you live now, while also tapping into your home's future value Restore period features

We’re not short of period properties in south west London and Surrey and homeowers that make the most of historic features not only have a beautiful focal point to enjoy now but are also in high demand with buyers. Prime features to restore include cornices, fireplaces, and original floors. But make sure that renovations are authentic to the period.

Improve energy efficiency

Double-glazed sash windows can be a great way to add value to a home. They also improve heat (and sound) insulation so they make a prudent investment, particularly when a buyer is looking at a property's energy performance certificate.

Prioritise space and flexibility

Adding square footage is often seen as a way to add value. Consider a loft or garage conversion or rear extension. However, it takes time and money and if you don't need it for your own lifestyle, it might be better to just apply for the planning permission - approved plans can be a big boon for prospective buyers. Light open-plan rooms will always be popular and removing internal walls can open up dark rooms to create stunning family and entertaining spaces. You may need a structrual engineer. But consider how to zone bigger rooms to show how a room could also offer, for example, a home office. You can also add value with a garden room, ideal for extra space in smaller properties,

while at the top end, they can enhance the outdoor offering, providing a reading room or yoga area.

Upgrade your kitchen

Most home owners – and buyers – want a modern kitchen. At the premium level, big-name kitchen companies will impress. However, it’s not necessary across the board. Good returns can be realised with more moderates finishes.

Avoid the show home trap

There is the perception that when you come to sell, potential buyers like neutral schemes but that doesn’t mean you have to live in a bland box until then. Make it feel like a home. Plus, some well chosen luxury design statements - an iconic chair, a stunning light - can make your home seem more desirable.

Outdoor spaces, updated Imagine yourself as

40

a prospective buyer as they approach your house. Check everything is well maintained, from garden walls and fences to windows and front doors. Flaking paint, broken tiles, and overgrown gardens are easy to fix, and avoid more costly repairs later down the line. Landscaped gardens look polished. Outdoor pools and water features are divisive: unless you will get a great deal of enjoyment out of them, look at investing instead in defined dining and entertaining spaces, which will always appeal.

Ask an estate agent

If you think a move might be on the cards in the next year, then get an estate agent around before you start on the work. Ask what their buyers are currently demanding and what they think will add value. Stephen Ashby, director, Hawes & Co, Wimbledon Village, says: “Focus on high-quality presentation, generous family space and strong period features — benefits you can enjoy day to day, not just when you sell. Well-finished interiors, flexible layouts and realistic pricing are key to attracting competitive interest in this lifestyle-led market.”  T&L
