Putting this edition together has been a joy, especially thanks to the people I had the chance to interview. India Amarteifio talks about her love of independent film and why she’s supporting Kingston International Film Festival. Local artist Pookie Blezard shares how her garden inspires many of her paintings, while Paddington star Hugh Bonneville chats about his new children’s book, partly inspired by his own childhood.

Mark your diary for FUSE International Kingston will be filled with young creatives from all around the world for the annual FUSE International festival. Taking place from 26 June to 5 July, the programme runs across music, theatre, dance, comedy, spoken word and circus. Highlights include collaborations for the Pride in Kingston Weekend; Battle of the Bands, and the National Youth Music Theatre performing family musical Growl with performers from Serious Play Shanghai and Youth Theatre Kenya.

Coming to the Rose… Kingston’s Rose Theatre has announced a new adaptation of Frankenstein, inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic novel. It will run from 16 April to 8 May 2027. The show is a co-production between Rose Theatre and Leeds Playhouse as part of Tom Wright’s inaugural season as Artistic Director at Leeds Playhouse. For the Rose, Jeff James has previously directed Shooting Hedda Gabler by Nina Segal and his own adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. Before then, we can look forward to Three Men in a Boat (18 September - 10 October 2026) and Jane Eyre (13 October-Saturday 24 October 2026).

Mayfield at 20

Banstead’s Mayfield Lavender Farm reopens on 6 June and is celebrating its 20th anniversary of opening to the public with themes of renewal, regrowth and regeneration. At the Potting Station, visitors can learn how to propagate lavender to grow in their gardens, and an ‘Adopt-a-Plant’ programme supports ongoing regeneration with guests providing a personal message or dedication beneath newly planted lavender. There will also be street food traders on site this year.

Derby day out

Pixie Lott and The Hoosiers will top the line up at DerbyFest on 5-6 June as part of the Epsom Derby Festival. The event is free and tickets need to be booked in advance.

Ghostly visions A new exhibition will take visitors through Strawberry Hill House to explore Horace Walpole’s gothic villa in a new light. ‘Paper Castle’ (3-21 June) is a contemporary art exhibition developed by students from the Courtauld Institute © Kilian O’Su of Art’s MA Curating llivan programme and explores themes of visual deception, ghostliness and artifice, encouraging visitors to question what they think they know.

INDIA AMARTEIFIO The actor on Kingston International Film Festival, life after Queen Charlotte, and why she’s drawn to independent ﬁlm For India Amarteifio, supporting the Kingston International Film Festival (KIFF) is as much about community as it is about cinema. Born in Kingston and raised in nearby Twickenham, she has remained closely connected to the area and its creative scene, and was delighted to be asked to serve as a KIFF ambassador over the past few years. “I’ve lived here my whole life, so I’m really happy to support a newer film festival in the place I grew up in, which has been filled with a lot of creative people.”

Kingston International Film Festival 5–7 June

Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, the festival features screenings, workshops, and events for both industry and the public, including this year, an ‘Audience with Mike Leigh’ and the world premiere of US comedy 25 Miles to Normal. Alongside its three-day programme, KIFF supports creativity in the borough year-round. She has a passion for independent film, describing her work with American indie studio Neon as a career highlight. The project, Clarissa, is a modern reimagining of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway, starring Sophie Okonedo. “Making an arthouse film has always been a dream and feels like a direction I’d like to go in.” India began her career on stage, making her West End debut as young Nala in The Lion King, followed by roles in Matilda the Musical and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Television work in Line of Duty and The Interceptor followed, before her breakthrough in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Stepping into the Shondaland world marked a major shift. “I had just turned 20, and to be given the opportunity to lead a show for Netflix and Shondaland – well, I’m quite glad the enormity of it hadn’t really set in while we were filming, because I think it would have really shaken me. But I just had the most incredible time. I’ve made some amazing friends who I still keep in contact with.” The role’s impact extended beyond her personally. “Seeing brown people, especially brown girls, portrayed in such a regal and elegant way has altered a lot of people’s perception of themselves,” she says. “It also shaped me to be a lot more confident and comfortable in my skin as a woman now.” Despite her visibility, she resists the idea of

being a role model. “If I’m being authentic to myself and that resonates with someone, that’s all I can do. I’m lucky to have a platform as a by-product of my job, so if I can encourage someone to think about giving to a charity or something I do has a positive influence, that’s enough. I would never expect anyone to look up to me. That creates pressure, and an image that may not be real. Like everyone, I’m imperfect.” Instead, she points to her mother as her biggest influence: “Her resilience, her hard work – a single mother raising two daughters on not much money, putting our needs above hers, and running a business by herself...”

to afford many extracurricular activities, and the principal, Miss Harita, offered classes at a discounted rate because she saw I was willing to put in the time and effort. She gave me a lot of her free time. I’m very grateful and hope one day I can give something back.” Outside work, she describes herself as “a bit of a granny.” “I’m naturally quite routine-based, and I have to let that go in the workplace. So when I can, I stick to very mundane activities to feel some level of normality.” That includes gardening, reading, running, tennis, and long walks. “Maybe yomping around somewhere in Surrey. It’s calm, peaceful, and it’s home.”

India describes her upbringing as peaceful. “I was near to the river, and close to the Royal Parks. There was also the freedom to go into London when I needed to, then come back to a real community feel.” But there were moments of disconnection. With Ghanaian British heritage, she sometimes felt out of place. “When I was younger, the area wasn’t as multicultural as it is now, so being of mixed heritage, I felt a bit different to other kids.”

Her schedule is now packed. She is heading to Cannes for the premiere of Clarissa and will also appear in The Rapture, a BBC drama starring Ruth Madeley. “It’s the first thing I’ve filmed properly since Queen Charlotte. I feel like a very different actor, so I’m excited to show what I’m working on and how my acting has changed and matured. I hope people will enjoy that.” 

Her early training was rooted locally at the Richmond Academy of Dance. “I wasn’t able

HUGH BONNEVILLE The Downton Abbey and Paddington star on coming to Barnes for the London Children’s Literature Festival – and how his childhood helped shape his own book… his month, Barnes Green will once again host the London Children’s Literature Festival, bringing together some of the finest children’s authors and illustrators. Among them is a relative newcomer – Hugh Bonneville, who has been making waves with his debut children’s book, Rory Sparkes and the Elephant in the Room.

While much of the book feels wildly imaginative, some of its most surprising elements are rooted in real life. Hugh recalls: “This was back in the day when circuses had animals and when it was in town, some of the kids from the circus came to school on the back of an elephant, which was the most exotic thing we’d ever seen in South East London.” “In my story, it’s slightly different because the circus is actually rehoming its animals

quite rightly. But nevertheless, Donna the Elephant does come with Evie, one of the circus kids and a couple of their friends, to the school. And that’s where the initial tension between the kids at the school starts, but also where their friendship begins.” Another strange childhood incident found its way into his story: “There really was a lady on my street who ended up under siege on her roof because she was having a pot shot at various cats and the police had to get involved.” His book initially came out in October and has now been released in paperback – it has been well received and he is looking forward to connecting with readers in person at the festival. “That’s been the really fun part of writing children’s books – just engaging with children’s imaginations.

I’ve really enjoyed going into schools and to festivals and chatting to children about what makes them tick and the joy of storytelling.” Despite his growing reputation as an author, younger audiences often know him best as Mr Brown from the Paddington films. Hugh is well aware of where loyalties lie. “I know that after 20 minutes talking about Rory Sparkes and all my characters the first question is always ‘where’s Paddington?’ so I have to explain that it’s marmalade day and that he’s at home chopping oranges. But it’s lovely that youngsters are so engaged with that character who’s so beloved.” The popularity of the films has also helped rekindle interest in the books. “The real pleasure has been the delight of seeing young people get into the stories. Anything

that takes children back to reading, which has declined so much over the last decade, is great.” Hugh is keen to keep that momentum going and even involves his readers in shaping future adventures. His next book draws inspiration from tunnels beneath Blackheath, once used by smugglers. After sharing the idea with schoolchildren, he asked them to imagine where Rory might end up if he ventured inside and suggestions ranged from a kitchen to another planet.

initially living in Christchurch Road in East Sheen and spending much of his time exploring Richmond Park. “I used to love going there on adventures and climbing in trees, hiding in ferns and playing ambush. I also loved the river and the theatre in Richmond.” He was soon to tread the boards himself, joining the National Youth Theatre, but he didn’t consider acting could be a career option. “I never believed in my teens that I could do it as a profession… so getting my equity card 40 years ago was one of the proudest moments of my career.”

A third instalment is already planned. At the heart of Rory’s appeal, Hugh believes, is a balance of strengths and vulnerabilities. “I think back to myself at that age, and I had a degree of apparent confidence, but I was a nervous lad underneath. And you’re always trying to sort of fit in: your gang, your school, your home environment.”

That career has since included one of television’s most iconic roles: Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, in Downton Abbey. Hugh believes the show’s appeal lay in its characters and underlying optimism. “When I first read the script, I was interested in the characters… they all had individual voices and I wanted to know what happened next.”

“You ask what is your place in the world from an early age. We can be self-conscious, we can excel at some things. Rory is not great at sport, I wasn’t great at sport, but he’s got a vivid imagination and he’s a goodhearted guy and wants to help others.”

He says of its creator Julian Fellowes: “He writes from a default position that people try to be good. And I think there is an underlying goodwill in the show… there was a sense of community underneath it that people related to and cared about.”

That sense of kindness is central, echoing the gentle moral compass of Michael Bond’s creation Paddington. “Rory ultimately sees that being kind gets you on better in the world than putting up barriers to people… Paddington also has this great sense of compassion and kindness. He never sets out to do anything with the malice of forethought… so I think we can all identify with that.”

So, what did Hugh think of his character? “On the one hand, he was slow to judge, on the other, he had this rashness of temper,

Among his favourites were The Chronicles of Narnia, Stig of the Dump and, of course, the Paddington stories. “They were the first books that I could read for myself. And I remember taking great pride in saying, no, I don’t need anyone to read this to me, I can do it now.”

but I found that actually quite funny, and I liked him being a bit slow on the uptake sometimes. But eventually, I did say to Julian that Robert’s IQ seems to be going down!” Hugh’s characters have run from Bernie in Notting Hill to Ian Fletcher in Twenty Twelve which won a British Comedy Award and a BAFTA for Best Comedy. Fletcher was back for three seasons of W1A, a series about life at the BBC and on our screens again recently as Director of Integrity for the World Cup in Twenty Twenty Six. His favourite part to play? Mr Pooter from The Diary of a Nobody. “I just really adored him… it’s a very simple, humble story but I absolutely adored it. However, I reserve the right to change my mind all the time about my favourite character.” Recently, Hugh returned to the stage in Shadowlands, portraying C. S. Lewis in the West End, a role he has played before. With another book underway and new projects on the horizon, he remains characteristically grounded about ambition. “It’s just to get the next job. That’s all. As actors, we’re working on the cab-rank principle… so I’m just looking forward to the next job.”  T&L

His early love for reading shapes his advice to parents. “I cherished it hugely as a kid… my father was a very busy surgeon and always took time to find 15 minutes to sit down and breathe out at the end of the day and share that time. It’s difficult today because we all get torn in different directions but if parents can resist just handing over the iPad… making that time together to reconnect is invaluable.” He talks of his childhood with affection,

Tell us about the exciting expansion of Florentina Boutique. The recent expansion of Florentina Boutique has been an exciting milestone for us. What began as a small independent boutique has grown into one of the largest fashion boutiques in south west London. THE HEALTH CHECKS TO KNOW AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE How to stay on top of your health through every decade

In your 20s

Many people in their 20s tend to overlook health checks, assuming they only become important later in life. In reality, this decade is an ideal time to establish a strong foundation for your long-term health. Conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, fertility issues and nutritional deficiencies can develop silently long before symptoms appear. Regular check-ups can help establish a useful baseline and identify any early concerns. Tests may include a full blood count, blood sugar levels, thyroid function tests and STI screening. Anyone with a cervix is offered cervical cancer screening between ages 25 to 64 every five years.

In your 30s

Health screenings in your 30s are worth keeping on top of, particularly around metabolic health, cardiovascular wellbeing and preventative cancer checks. A fullbody skin examination may also be worth considering at any age — particularly if you have a history of sun exposure, changing moles or a family history of skin cancer. Some private clinics and dermatology centres also offer mole mapping for ongoing monitoring.

In your 40s

Your 40s are often the decade when preventative healthcare becomes increasingly important, with heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers becoming more common. Full body MOTs with private clinics can offer peace of mind or pick up conditions quickly. Dr Joan Pattle, General Practitioner at Cleveland Clinic London, stresses the

importance of open conversations with your doctor: “At its core, health is not about doing everything perfectly all the time. Life has seasons — career pressures, family commitments and unexpected challenges — and wellbeing needs to flex around them.” She adds: “Age, personal history and family history all influence what screenings are appropriate, from blood pressure and cholesterol checks to cancer screening and heart health assessments.” In England, adults aged between 40 and 74 are eligible for a free NHS Health Check every five years, designed to assess your risk of conditions including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. This is also a good time to discuss more comprehensive blood testing with a healthcare provider. Many women also begin navigating perimenopause symptoms during this decade. If you're under 45 and having menopause symptoms, a GP may sometimes do blood tests. Men may also wish to speak with their GP about prostate cancer risk, particularly if there is a family history.

In your 50s and beyond

From your 50s onwards, the focus shifts increasingly towards the early detection of cardiovascular disease, cancers and metabolic conditions. Blood pressure and cholesterol checks become increasingly important, alongside bowel cancer screening and routine monitoring for chronic conditions. If you experience symptoms such

as chest pain, breathlessness or palpitations, your GP may recommend additional investigations including an ECG or further heart health assessments. Women are routinely invited for NHS breast screening from age 50, typically every three years, until aged 70 (although you can still request one after this age). Bone density scans may also be recommended, particularly after menopause. For men, discussions around prostate cancer risk and PSA testing become increasingly relevant during this decade. Men are also invited for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening through the NHS at age 64. The NHS offers bowel cancer screening between the ages of 50 to 74. If you're aged 55 to 74 and have ever smoked, you may be contacted by your GP to take part in lung cancer screening.

For your children

For children, regular eye tests and hearing checks are particularly important to support learning, communication and social development. Routine dental appointments also play a vital role, helping establish healthy oral hygiene habits from an early age. Parents may also wish to speak to their GP or health visitor if they have concerns around growth, nutrition, sleep, behaviour or developmental milestones. Pulse, blood pressure checks and heart health checks could also be considered. Cardiac Risk in the Young offers subsidised cardiac screening (an ECG) to all young people between the ages of 14 and 35.  T&L

NATURAL INSPIRATION We chat to Pookie Blezard about Barnes Artists Open Studios and how her garden inspires her paintings

Barnes Artists Open Studios 6–7 June Garden Path

This June, Barnes artists will welcome visitors to their homes and studios as part of an open weekend. Among them is Pookie Blezard, a painter and fashion designer, who was born in Barnes and still lives in the house she was born and raised in. “I was born in my bedroom,” she laughs. Her garden is her muse, and her paintings often become prints for her fashion label Pazuki. She says: “I’d describe what I do as immersive garden painting. I wait until the garden is at optimum wildness, then I sit in the middle and paint, it’s almost like meditation.”

through the house, and pursuing your passions was never questioned. Pookie attended the Royal College of Music at age five. But it was visual arts rather than music that she was drawn to. She attended Camberwell School of Art, first studying drawing and painting before specialising in printed textiles. A conversation with the Barnes painter Francis Hoyland, who taught at Camberwell, helped shape that direction. “He said, ‘You look like a textile person to me,’” she recalls. “And it made sense. I’ve always loved fabrics – I used to sew little bits together when I was really small.”

Visitors to her home for Barnes Artists Open Studios will be able to see her largescale paintings as well as her Pazuki fashion line, and she will also host two other artists for the event. It’s an atmospheric place to take in her work. The house reveals itself in layers, still offering glimpses into her childhood home. She recalls a carefree childhood, running around what was then an arty bohemian neighbourhood.

After leaving art school she worked with Japanese companies and later with Paul Smith, whose use of prints and encouragement helped turn her ideas into a commercial fashion business. Pazuki garments and accessories were stocked by top department stores and boutiques internationally, including the now-closed New York department store Barneys.

When her parents died, Pookie stayed on. “There used to be four pianos here, but sadly they’ve all gone now.” She came from a musical family. Her father was the pianist and composer William Blezard, who worked with performers including Joyce Grenfell and Marlene Dietrich, while her mother Joan Kemp-Potter was a conductor and professor at the Guildhall. Music flowed

But she wanted to return to painting. “I got bored with the digital image and being on a computer all the time, I wanted a more human touch.” It’s hard to step away completely from the magic of printing on fabric so now her paintings merge into prints for garments, but in a much less pressurised way than the merry-go-round of travelling to trade fairs and doing massive shipments to big stores.

Running Wild

“I still feel under pressure as I get up in the morning with a burning desire to create, but it’s not quite the same.” That commercial background though has shaped her attitude to her artwork. She says it’s there to sell. “I want my work to go out into the world for people to enjoy, not to pile up here.” Her paintings have sold well through local exhibitions organised by Barnes Artists and to private clients. Her fashion line is sold through stores and online. "I get lovely emails from people saying how many compliments they get when they are wearing my designs. Also, they keep them for a long time – in these days of sustainability, it matters.” But sustainability is not new to Pookie. “My mother would never throw anything away. She was brought up in frugal times, every little piece of everything was always kept.” Barnes Open Studios will give visitors the chance to see over 36 local artists, many of which have been influenced and supported by the local artistic community. For Pookie, Barnes is not just where she lives, but a place that has shaped her life and career. “I have a lovely friendship group here, it feels like a village yet so close to central London. I love the common, and the trees… I think I will always be hefted to Barnes…”  T&L
