Spring may – or may not – be in the air as you read this. Officially, though, we’re entering a new season. That is if you go by the meteorological definition of spring where it arrives with reassuring punctuality on 1 March, dividing the 12 months of the year into four convenient seasons. If you go by the astronomical version, spring begins on the vernal equinox (usually 20 March). Personally, I think it starts the first time you leave the house without dressing under 20 layers of wool and can actually feel the sun on your face. That’s my benchmark, and I refuse to be told otherwise.

LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS South West London show highlights inspiring women Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Sally Phillips are just two of the incredible British women honoured in oils for the Empowering Her exhibition by Caroline de Peyrecave. The exhibition runs from 4-14 March, at The Gallery, Green & Stone, in Chelsea, and aims to challenge the norms of who should be celebrated in portraiture. Actor and comedian Sally Phillips is portrayed in front of a line of odd socks, representing her ari-Ratcliffe Nazanin Zagh Sight’ three neurodivergent children, ‘Held in Plain and former political prisoner Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is captured looking directly at the viewer – when she saw the portrait, Nazanin said, “there is a power in my eyes I have never seen before.” Other leading figures in the exhibition include Zoe Stratford, England Rugby World Cup winning captain and advocate for women in sport, and Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, space scientist and science communicator.

Epic coffee journey

Art Surrey is coming to Sandown Park on 20 – 22 March. Chaya De Silva is one of the 100+ artists taking part. Chaya is a Surrey-based contemporary artist whose textile assemblage practice bridges her Sri Lankan heritage with her life in the UK. Chaya uses reclaimed silks and heavy impasto to explore the somatic memory of womanhood and the “unspoken threads” of identity and belonging.

Edwin and Magda Harrison, founders of Artisan coffee shop in Putney and Curious Roo roastery are attempting a world record for the longest coffee order delivery from the UK to Australia. The six-month slow travel adventure will see the family, including their three children aged 6, 8 and 11 and one bag of coffee, travel in a converted van across 25 countries and 22,000km entirely by land and sea. Exploring coffee culture around the world, their adventure highlights how the humble bean is more than a commodity, but a connector of people and places. From traditional European espresso bar counters to emerging coffee culture in Kazakhstan and drying beds in China, they’ll meet roasters, shop owners and growers. Edwin and Magda will also be raising money for their UK charity More than a Dent which delivers long-term infrastructure projects to communities in need.

Merton’s music celebrations Merton has been named a Cultural Impact Award winner by the Mayor of London. Along with Barnet and Greenwich, it has received £300,000 to deliver transformative creative projects within their communities. Merton’s programme includes new grants, artist residencies and Start of the Line — a new music, arts and culture festival in Morden Park. The festival, on 20 June, will feature Soul II Soul, The Hoosiers, Billy Nomates, and Jah Wobble. There will also be a family area from Polka Theatre.

Swift response from Wimbledon locals With a dramatic decline in the population of swifts, Wimbledon residents are being encouraged to help the iconic birds by installing nesting boxes. Following a community awareness campaign led by local swift enthusiast Rosie, with support from Louise of Wimbledon Swifts, practical action is now underway and 30 swift nesting boxes have been installed across the local area by Joe, an intrepid swift box installer (and firefighter). After making the 7,000-mile journey from Africa to breed in the UK each summer, many swifts struggle to find nesting sites, as modern building renovations have sealed up the cavities they once relied on. There’s some new openings in the town centre - top homewares retailer The Cotswold Company is taking up premises at 27 Thames Street. Dunelm will be heading to Kingston too, believed to be in the former Plush Outlet site. Bonbon Pottery is coming to Fife Road, offering pottery taster classes and pottery painting.

Creative year ahead We met up with The Community Brain and Creative Youth to find out about their fantastic events this year across Kingston. Highlights include cows being introduced to Tolworth as part of a vast rewilding project; a celebration of the Ace of Spades roadhouse – which, in its 1930s heyday, had its own nightclub and landing strip; the Seething festival (pictured), and an exhibition about funky knitwear label Sibling. Plus, Creative Youth has some fundraising events after devastating floods last year at its performance space FUSEBOX, and we hear about its festival for young performers.

Lebanese flavours Surrey-based chef Jad Youssef is bringing out his first cookbook Lebnani: A Journey Through Family, Food and the Flavours of Lebanon later this month. Born in Beirut during the civil war, Youssef learned to cook from his mother Khadija. The book combines family recipes with personal narratives about how food sustained his family through conflict. He founded Yalla Yalla in 2009, one of London’s first Lebanese street food restaurants, and his chicken liver mezze was named one of Time Out’s 100 Best Dishes in London. He now runs Lebnani, a family restaurant in Reigate, with his wife Aga.

Spain via Surrey The Horton’s annual Spanish Festival of Music and Dance returns in April, celebrating the 150th anniversary of iconic composer, Manuel De Falla. The year’s programme is curated by Musical Director and author, Antonio Hernández Moreno, who was initially inspired to create the Surrey festival after his research into Spanish dance prodigy, Félix Fernández García. Félix came to London in 1918 to work on The Three-Cornered Hat. Under mysterious circumstances, a year later, he was secretly committed to one of the Epsom Cluster Asylums where he remained until his death in 1942. He is buried in an unmarked, mass grave in the Horton Cemetery.

VIVIAN PANKA The Wimbledon actor steps into the pink heels of Regina George in the upcoming tour of Mean Girls the Musical… By Tara Robinson

ew films ever captured the noughties zeitgeist quite like 2004’s Mean Girls. The widely loved story of high school politics, female rivalry and complicated friendship has since spawned many iterations, including the rock musical written by the original film’s creator, Tina Fey. It wowed the West End in 2024, and this year, it will embark on a UK tour.

Wimbledon-based actor Vivian Panka plays Regina George, the Queen Bee and mean-girl-in-chief, in the upcoming tour. When we speak, she is mid-rehearsal, with a final week of rehearsals planned before opening in Manchester on 23 February. The show will come to New Victoria Theatre, Woking from 27 April to 2 May, and New Wimbledon Theatre from 24 to 28 November. How does she feel about stepping into the role of one of the most iconic characters of the twenty-first century? “Big shoes to fill,” she says. “Everyone who’s played Regina has been iconic, and the character is a lot of people’s favourite, so I feel like I have to give them a good show. But I’m really excited to do it as well.” Vivian is a big fan of both the movie and the musical, with the part having long been one of her dream roles. She did a lot to prepare, watching and re-watching the film, listening to the cast album, and undertaking vocal training. “I feel good, but I also feel like you’re never prepared to take on a part like this until you’re just doing it.” She is working hard to make the role her own. “I’d seen the musical already when it was in the West End, before I knew I was going to play the part, so I just sat back and enjoyed it. When I got the part, I decided I wasn’t going to watch the musical again.

I want to make sure it’s one hundred per cent my version of it. And if there’s anything specific needed for the part, I’ll be told by my associate director or anyone senior in the room. So I try to make it my own by just delving into the script and the music, what it means to me and what my version of Regina looks like.” Mean Girls has been capturing hearts and imaginations around the globe for over 20 years, its cache of quotable jokes, references and iconic characters instantly recognisable to anybody under a certain age. Vivian attributes the story’s enduring popularity to its continual relatability. “Everyone’s been to high school – maybe not in America, but everyone has a group of friends and these dynamics that you deal with when you’re a teenager. So I think it’s very relatable to people. And these are all imperfect characters, which I think is beautiful. It’s called Mean Girls, so everybody in the show has a mean streak. Nobody is perfect, and it teaches you to be a little nicer to each other. It’s also just really funny.” Vivian played Heather Duke in a production of Heathers the Musical at The Other Palace; another story about high school rivalries and mean girls, with a slightly darker twist. But Vivian says both shows carry a similar and important message by the end. “At the end of Heathers, everyone comes together to sing about how much better it is to work together, and it’s kind of the same in Mean Girls. Everyone just becomes a bit more accepting of each other, which I think is a very important message to be promoting these days.” Musical theatre has long been Vivian’s passion. “The first musical I saw was High School Musical. I wasn’t really a fan of musicals just yet, but when I watched that, I just fell in love with the idea of storytelling through music. After that I listened to the cast soundtrack of Aida, the musical, and I was fascinated by the way I could understand the whole story by just listening to the album, even though I’d never seen the show. I thought, ‘wow, this is beautiful. I’d love to be able to tell stories this way.’”

The first musical she starred in after that was an amateur production of The Little Mermaid at her local music school, where she played one of the sisters. After that she started auditioning and getting parts, her next role being the wicked witch in The Wiz. I point out a pattern of playing antagonistic characters, and she laughs. “Believe it or not, I don’t always gravitate to the evil characters! It is fun to play them sometimes though, because they are so different from who I am.” Vivian grew up in the Netherlands before moving to the UK during the pandemic. The musical theatre industry in the Netherlands is growing, but she came to London to seek more opportunities in the city’s thriving theatre scene. “It was such a quiet time in London when I first moved here. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. It was very scary because I needed to get a job and a house. I was very lucky when theatre started up again, and I got a role in 9to5 very quickly.”

has also toured the UK and Ireland in Dear Evan Hansen as Alana. As to the future, Vivian would like to one day try her hand at film and TV. “I have a sweet spot for sitcoms, and I would really like to maybe write one of my own as well. I’d also love to be in an action comedy.” She also has a popular podcast called Dressing Room Diaries, where she interviews other people in the theatre industry. More episodes are planned. Vivian is currently living in Wimbledon, which she loves for its community vibe and quietness away from the busyness of Central London. “I love being so close to nature here. There are so many cute shops, and it’s quiet and safe. It’s my first time living in south west London, and it’s so nice. It has a real community vibe.” As a result, she is excited to bring Mean Girls the Musical to Wimbledon later this year. It’ll certainly feel like a homecoming for her. For now, though, the first stop on the tour is Manchester.  T&L

International Women’s Day in 2026 is bigger than ever. Here’s why it matters…

It’s shaping up to be one of the best International Women’s Day yet, and when I say ‘day’, it’s actually becoming a weeklong celebration, with a growing number of fabulous events. When we first launched our IWD breakfast, you’d have been hard pressed to find an IWD event in SW London, despite the growing number of dynamic female leaders and entrepreneurs we have the pleasure to read about in Time & Leisure. And this year, we’re hosting, partnering and speaking at not one but three brilliant events in the locality, so don’t miss out - there is something for everyone. At our breakfast on the 5th March, we’re talking about The Female Advantage. Our guest speaker, Deborah Henley, is an author, podcaster, and leadership thinker. She’ll be sharing insights from her REAL framework that reveals the skills women inherently own that she sees as an advantage in this fast-paced, high performance, tech-driven world. Whilst prejudice persists, we are told it will take another 30 years to reduce the gender paygap. Alongside that reality sits another truth. Tell us about Love Wimbledon Business Improvement District SW - Funded by the businesses in Wimbledon Town Centre, we are a small team of five (mainly part time) led by our CEO Craig Hurring, with the ambition to make a better Wimbledon where businesses thrive, people visit and communities engage. We invest nearly half a million pounds a year on events, placemaking, cleaning, security, business services, sustainability projects and much more. Your readers will probably know us for things like Big Screen Tennis, the Station Christmas Tree, monthly and Christmas markets and all the Love Wimbledon marketing and promotion of the town centre.

What do you enjoy about your role?

SW- We are so lucky to be working here, every day is different and we get to see tangible results from so much of what we do. I’ve lived in the area for over 30 years and it’s great to be part of a team that really cares about a place, we all go the extra mile to make things happen. JW - I love working with the business community in Wimbledon and supporting them in achieving their goals, whether it’s brand awareness or marketing our programmes and the town centre to help them attract and retain employees.

What changes are taking place in the town centre?

SW - It’s been an extraordinary couple of years here, footfall is surging, bucking national trends, New Wimbledon Theatre had one of its best pantos ever and as for the food scene – we’ve recently seen independents including Bobochacha, Oy Bar and Ramen Danbo choose Wimbledon. Let’s not forget the arrival of Sostrene Grene and the refurbishment of Curzon, M&S, Itsu and Joe and the Juice. With the new hotel opening on Wimbledon Hill this year and the creative hotel now on site, Wimbledon is booming.

Tell us about exciting things coming up in the next few months?

JW - After taking a break for the winter, the Love Wimbledon Market returns 28-Feb/1-March and runs the first weekend of every month – a sure sign that spring has arrived. I look forward to seeing some of our long-standing traders (some who have traded for over 10 years!) and meeting new faces as well. Our market has been a real launching pad for several local businesses, which is something we’re incredibly proud of. Each summer, Wimbledon Town Centre transforms for the Wimbledon Championships fortnight as tens of thousands of visitors come through the station to watch the tennis. It’s such an exciting time — seeing the shop windows dressed up and feeling the buzz around the town makes it my favourite time of year. Love Wimbledon hosts a Big Screen on The Piazza, a free event for visitors to relax on one of our deck chairs and watch the tennis. You never quite know who might turn up either — last year, Andy Murray made a surprise appearance as part of the Walkers Shortbread activation, which was a real treat.

What has been your favourite project you have worked on in the BID to date?

SW - Whether it’s being behind the Railway Path Wombles Mural, ensuring Wimbledon celebrates the tennis (some of you may remember the days with no big screen, hanging baskets or banners..!) or initiating the UK's first annual high street Sustainable September campaign – it's difficult to say! JW - I have worked on so many interesting projects, it’s hard to choose

just one! I loved seeing our Summer of Sport campaign and activation come to life - running track and all - launching a new Business Masterclass podcast or finding ways to connect residents, visitors, businesses and people who work in Wimbledon to build on an already established community.

Tell us one unknown location (or fun fact) about Wimbledon Town Centre?

Many know the golden statue on top of the dome of New Wimbledon Theatre as the theatre’s ‘angel,’ though it is actually Laetitia, the Roman Goddess of Gaiety. The current statue is a replacement: the original statue was removed in World War II for safekeeping; nobody has found it since. One of the biggest challenges was navigating COVID, including around eight months of closure. By staying closely connected with clients and continuing to rebook appointments, we preserved continuity and trust. A second challenge was stepping off the salon floor to work on the business rather than in it, but with strong systems and processes in place, alongside a fantastic team, the transition was far smoother than expected.

What advice would you give someone looking to open their own business?

If you have the interest or courage to open your own business, take the leap. It requires dedication and perseverance, a commitment to always do your best, and a willingness to adapt and learn new skills. Strong systems and processes are essential foundations for long-term success.

Having worked for global financial services companies, running large teams and delivering major projects, I had gained a wealth of skills, but I was ready for a new challenge. I wanted to do something for myself and work flexibly around my family.

What trends are you seeing in 2026?

Enquiries for lifestyle support are increasing. More people are realising that household management services can enable them to enjoy their lives with a single, trusted contact who handles the day-to-day running of their home, coordinates trades, conducts property checks, plans events, and manages admin. An extra pair of hands gives them more time to focus on what matters.

Which achievement in your career means the most to you personally?

Earning my landlords’ trust means the most to me. How do you combine delivering strong results with making clients feel supported?

Regular updates are key, especially support with the upcoming Renters’ Rights coming into force from the 1st May 2026.

What experiences have shaped your approach to leadership?

Working my way up through the industry has shaped my leadership style significantly. Having been in negotiators’ shoes, I understand the pressures of what targets can bring and time management, so I lead with empathy. I believe in setting high standards while creating a supportive environment

where the team feels confident to ask questions and learn.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the property industry who wants to grow in confidence? Know your market and ask questions. Confidence comes from preparation. Learn from experienced colleagues, master legislation, and build real relationships. Rejection happens, but consistent, excellent service creates lasting success.
