E D I TO R’ S LET T E R
Happy New Year! What are your hopes for 2026? If improving your wellness is top of your list of priorities, then read on. This edition we’re looking at longevity - but how far would you go to extend your lifespan? There’s been some extreme methods hitting the headlines in recent years, from vampiric-style infusions of plasma taken from one’s own children to shelf-loads of supplements to be guzzled daily. Fortunately, the conversation is shifting. Rather than simply adding years, the focus is now on healthspan, the number of years lived well, and encouragingly, there is widespread agreement on simple, sustainable lifestyle changes that really do make a difference. At its heart, wellness is about balance: enough sleep, a little wine (perhaps), meaningful social connections, and an exercise routine you actually enjoy – one that blends strength with cardio. And wellbeing touches every part of our lives. In this month’s article on interiors trends, one of the themes is how our homes can improve our wellbeing with increased use of natural light and colour therapy. In our travel piece, we hear how wellness retreats are increasingly in demand. Meanwhile, in Education, we look at what lies ahead for schools, where pupils are increasingly viewed holistically, with mental and physical health firmly on the agenda. It feels like resolutions are finally out and we are welcoming in a whole new era of holistic health rather than punishing gym regimes and fad diets that don’t extend beyond January. I’ll raise a glass of artery-cleansing Sardinian wine to that!

A new book reveals the fascinating history of some of our local historic buildings. Written by Nick Manning with photography provided by Andrew Wilson, The Beautiful Buildings of Wimbledon, Putney & Roehampton includes Mount Clare, a Georgian manor tucked away in the Roehampton University campus. Its grounds were originally laid out by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, and Disraeli used it as a location for one of his novels. Other places of interest include the Hand in Hand pub, which was originally a baker and grocer. The owner Daniel Watney then became a brewer – his grandson James Watney was the force behind the Watney brewing empire.

MISCHA BARTON On bringing film noir to the stage, her local connections, and finding home
ischa Barton is about to step into
of the most iconic roles in M one crime fiction as she makes her UK stage debut as Phyllis Nirdlinger in a new touring adaptation of Double Indemnity. The play, based on James M. Cain’s novel adapted for stage by Tom Holloway, will bring the seductive, dangerous antiheroine to life for contemporary audiences. The story takes place in California during the Great Depression. An insurance salesman is drawn into Phyllis’s plan to murder her husband and take off with the money. Mischa explains what drew her to the project: “She’s a full-blown femme fatale, and she’s got many layers to her so she’s a great character to play because she’s not what she appears to be. It’s great material and has a nice pace to it.” It is a role steeped in legacy - immortalised by Billy Wilder’s 1944 film noir with Barbara Stanwyck in the lead role. Mischa has watched the film several times. “It’s such a great movie. But I’m definitely not trying to be Barbara Stanwyck, she’s great in the movie… phenomenal.” And while the play is inspired by the book and the film, it will have its own modern take. The story is nearly 90 years old, but aspects still resonate. “It is a story born out of desperation. And I think it translates pretty well today because a lot of people at the moment are going through hard times.”
©Nicholas Dawkes
Mischa is looking forward to taking the play out to theatres around the country. While she toured Ireland with Steel Magnolias in 2012, this will be her first theatre tour in the UK.
12
One stop that is close to her heart is Richmond. She was born in Hammersmith, before moving to the US when she was five, and also has connections to the area through the Attenborough family – Richard was a mentor to Mischa in her early career, and a supportive figure after Mischa left The OC, the American teen show that made her name but put her under intense scrutiny at a young age.
I N T E RV I E W
Double Indemnity was originally set in the 1930s, an era that Mischa is drawn to – her recent films, Murder at the Embassy and Invitation to a Murder, see her play Miranda Green, a sleuth with a love of Agatha Christie. Says Mischa: “I love period pieces in general. I always feel like I was born of a different era and the 1930s is a really interesting time that lends itself to storytelling. And great fashion.” She also got to film on location in Egypt. “That’s another great aspect to these films in that it is not all CGI and film sets and we get to go to these places. The next [Miranda Green] one should be filming in South Africa.”
“She’s a great character to play... a full-blown femme fatale with many layers to her.”
Mischa’s latest film is Sleepwalker with Hayden Panettiere. “Hayden’s character delves into this kind of psychosis and then, well, I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a fastpaced thriller.” Filming has also just wrapped on Sanctuary, where Mischa plays a character who is being cyberstalked. “She has her digital footprint taken away from her and it is messing up her new life that she’s worked so hard for.” It has been a busy time for Mischa and she’s enjoying some downtime before rehearsals start for the play. Our interview takes place just before Christmas with Mischa looking relaxed at her sister’s house in the Cotswolds. “I’ve done a lot this year, which is a good thing. It’s nice to be settled in the UK now for the foreseeable future and to get a routine going. I like long walks and cycling around the area when the weather is good.” Mischa typically divides her time between London and New York. “I try to spend at least half my time here. It’s just nice to be close to family. I feel more at home here sometimes than I do in America.” Both places have an influence on her creatively, but she says: “I like coming over here because the arts are so strong and respected in a way that maybe sometimes they aren’t always in America and I really just enjoy watching and listening to things over here in general.” She says she would like to do more stage work, but adds: “I think it depends on the play. You’ve really got to find something that you’re thrilled to do day in and day out, and Double Indemnity is one of them. The reason for me moving back to New York from California was to be closer to the theatre scene, to be immersed in that world,
and I’ve found that very helpful for me.” As to what she’d like to explore next? “I’d love to do something kind of cool, like a feminist 1960s or 70s piece. That would be good.” Mischa made her feature film debut in Lawn Dogs in 1997, and went on to appear in films such as The Sixth Sense and Notting Hill in 1999, before hitting the big time in The OC. Her favourite roles? “I guess, for me, it’s more like what have been my favourite projects. Doing the movie [Closing the Ring in 2007] with Richard Attenborough always springs out because he was such a great director to work with, and I really liked my character. I also still have a really soft place in my heart for Lawn Dogs, so I guess the character of Devon still means a lot to me. And I enjoyed doing The OC – it was just a completely different experience.” In January, Mischa will turn 40. As it falls during rehearsals for the tour, plans for a big party are on hold while she’s preparing mentally and physically for the role. But she will celebrate the milestone. “I’m getting more and more excited as time goes on. I’m looking forward to my 40s, and I have a really good group of people around me now, and most of my close friends are older than me.”
What does she hope the decade will hold? Career-wise, some demanding roles, she says. “I’d also just like to be more settled in one place, on a personal level. For now it’s not bothering me too much, but I do tend to travel constantly and jump around a lot. So I think one of the main goals would be to be a little bit more settled, get my dogs in order, and to create a home.” UK or US? “I think it’ll be the US, but I don’t really know. Maybe Upstate New York.” When in London, she is based in Kensington, where she loves spending time at the V&A, walking in Hyde Park and kicking back in neighbourhood cafes. “I would have had a different answer in my 20s. I lived in Shoreditch. But now I like my local parks and my local block.” When she’s not working, her perfect day is simple. “Hang out with the dogs, go for a walk, maybe see a museum or a play,” she says. As she prepares for the tour, she’s clearly excited about what audiences will get from the show. “I hope it will be a really fun night out at the theatre,” she says. “I can’t wait to be playing her.” T&L

Live well, live long
How to live longer… and better With longevity such a hot topic, we look at what the experts actually agree on when it comes to ageing well…
12-Page
There has been a lot of headline-grabbing stories of how to extend your lifespan – with no shortage of extreme examples, from plasma transplants to guzzling vitamins by the truckload. Fortunately, the conversation is moving away from the hype to the everyday habits that will not just extend your lifespan but also your healthspan – the number of years you live well. What’s more, given that only 20 to 35% of our longevity is down to our genes, the rest is very much in our control.
1
Longevity Special
Sleep well, reduce stress
Good sleep habits are linked to living longer, up to five extra years for men, two for women. But it’s not just quantity but quality – so as well as getting the typical 7–8 hours of sleep a night, you also need to have minimal problems falling or staying asleep, not relying on sleeping medication and waking rested most days. Meanwhile, stress has a huge impact on the body and makes us age faster so get it under control – whatever works for you… sound baths, mindfulness, forest bathing, baking, getting a pet, stargazing, watching the sun rise.
3
Find your purpose
Purpose doesn’t need to be noble or Instagrammable. It just needs to exist. Research shows people with a sense of purpose are less likely to become inactive, develop sleep problems or struggle with unhealthy weight, and their brains work better too. Volunteering your skills, mentoring, and hobbies with an end goal can give you purpose. Purpose also evolves through the decades – what you strived for in your 30s is likely to look different in your 60s.
2
Get off social and socialise
Loneliness can impact your lifespan: the World Health Organisation reports that one in six people globally is lonely, with loneliness linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cognitive decline. In Okinawa, people form moai: lifelong friendship groups that offer emotional, practical and even financial support. Imagine a group chat that actually shows up. Think deeper bonds, more dinners, fewer doom-scrolls.
4
once grew a garden: daily physical activity, purpose, as well as stress relieving. The NHS recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (eg brisk walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (like running), plus strengthening activities (such as heavy gardening, yoga and Pilates) at least twice a week.
Move often, preferably outdoors
While no one disputes that exercise is essential for a healthy long life, debate rages over what exercise is best. But if you look at what people in Blue Zones (the areas with high numbers of centenarians) have in common, they move daily and because they have to. No one is suggesting you herd goats across mountainous terrain, unless you feel the need, but there are lessons we can take. Get outdoors, soak up the daylight. Almost all Okinawan centenarians grow or

Live well, live long
8
Eat like a Mediterranean
There’s no perfect diet, but there is a strong pattern: mostly plants, whole foods, minimal sugar, no ultraprocessed nonsense. The Mediterranean Diet is often heralded as the best with olive oil as the main fat source, lots of fruit and veggies and fish – what’s not to like? María Branyas Morera, of Spain, lived to 117. She followed simple habits: no smoking, no alcohol, and daily servings of plain yoghurt, which may have contributed to youthful gut health.
9
Drink as a treat not a crutch
Alcohol is complicated. It’s linked to several cancers, but in long-lived regions it’s consumed sparingly, with food and friends. Sardinian men, among the
Good Life Yoga
5
In balance
As we grow older, we lose some of our ability to balance, so one of the best things you can do, at any age, is to practise standing on one leg, says Alex Reed of Good Life Yoga. Practice the Tree Pose: Stand on one leg with your arms out to the sides; you can rest one hand lightly on a wall for support. Lift your other foot off the floor and place it against your standing leg, turning the raised knee slightly outwards. Your foot can rest at your ankle, calf or thigh, depending on your flexibility. Research shows that not being able to stand on one leg for 10 seconds in midlife or later is linked to nearly double the risk of dying in the next decade as it is a sensitive sign of how well our neuromuscular system is ageing.
6
The power of dance
Dancing ticks multiple longevity boxes at once: movement, balance, cognitive challenge, social connection and joy. It doesn’t matter if it’s a class, a wedding floor or your kitchen at 9pm. If it makes you move and smile, it counts, and you’re far more likely to keep doing it. We’ve loved hearing how one Wimbledon local is still taking to the dance floor regularly at almost 100.
7
Hear and see better, live longer
Untreated sight and hearing problems contribute to social withdrawal and increased risk of dementia. One major study found people who regularly use hearing aids have a 24% lower risk of premature death. Turns out staying in the conversation is very good for your brain, and your lifespan. Meanwhile, regular eye exams can spot early signs of diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Movement, sleep, hydration and lutein-rich foods like kale, spinach and egg yolk all help eyesight. Smoking, meanwhile, really does not.
16
longest-living in the world, drink small amounts of wine socially, not alone on the sofa. The Cannonau wine they drink has higher levels of polyphenols and flavonoids, antioxidants linked to reduced inflammation and cardiovascular health. The NHS guideline: no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, spread out. At 116, Surrey’s Ethel Caterham credited her long life to: “Never arguing with anyone. I listen, and I do what I like.” There’s stress reduction and purpose in that simple rule. Crucially, healthy ageing isn’t about optimisation. It’s about building a life that’s active, connected, purposeful and calm enough to enjoy. Eat well. Move daily. Dance often. Book the eye test. Call your friends. And maybe, just maybe, stop arguing. Relax, Restore and Reconnect Journey into stillness at this gorgeous mindful retreat in the Italian countryside
Upcoming Retreat:
2-8 May 2026
Who is the retreat for? This retreat is for anyone who wants to step away from daily life and reconnect with themselves, with nature, with their body, in a supportive circle of women. Whether you’re new to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, this yoga retreat will give you time to rest and nourish yourself. People who joined previous retreats come looking for calm, inspiration, and more presence. What does an average day look like? Mornings start gently, often with yoga and journaling to set the tone for your day. After breakfast, there’s time for walks in the Umbrian countryside, swimming, reading or simply soaking in the surroundings. Afternoons are for special workshops, like cacao ceremonies, fire rituals, or creative activities, blending movement and stillness. Evenings are relaxed, with stories over dinner and a soothing meditation before bedtime. Every moment is designed to help you feel held, supported, and fully present. What food and drink can people expect? The retreat offers wholesome, nourishing vegetarian meals, with a variety of cuisines, from traditional Italian flavours to spiced Asian fusion. Everything is made with fresh, seasonal ingredients that delight your senses and support your energy. Expect a table full of healthy, hearty dishes prepared with love, and yes, there will be dessert! Meals can also be adapted to suit any dietary preferences, allergies, or intolerances.
How many people will there be? This is an intimate retreat, with a maximum of 11 participants. This allows for a real sense of community while still giving everyone plenty of personal space. What’s the accommodation like? The accommodations are cosy and welcoming, ideal for rest and privacy. Wake up to birdsong, step into the fresh breeze, and soak in the calm of the surrounding forest and open skies. It’s a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and truly recharge. What makes yours different from other retreats? What makes this retreat special is the mix of somatic practices, yoga, cacao rituals, and creative sessions, balanced with plenty of free time, so you’re never rushing. And with a small group of women, the space naturally feels deeper, softer, and more connected. It’s a nourishing week for body, mind, and heart. What do you hope people take away from the retreat? Guests often leave with a sense of clarity, calm, and renewed energy. Many notice a deeper connection with themselves and others, insights that stay with them long after the retreat, and a toolkit of practices they can carry into daily life. Previous attendees have described this retreat as transformative, grounding, and heart-opening.

Find Your Serenity at Chase Farm Retreat Feel calmer, lighter and more connected at this luxurious rural retreat
Just over an hour from south west London lies a place where the pace slows, the senses soften and life feels simple again. Welcome to Chase Farm Retreat, a luxury retreat in the heart of West Sussex. Set on a third-generation family farm, they are redefining rural hospitality, bringing together wellbeing, wild spa experiences and luxury accommodation in nature. Their ethos is simple: Find Your Serenity. Tell us about you and the business Chase Farm has been home to the Edwards family since 1955. Today, sisters Louise Winder and Karen Hill are transforming the farm into a wellness retreat offering luxury farm stays and corporate retreats focused on wellbeing and team-building. It is still a working farm, growing maize, grazing sheep and stewarding wildlife. Guests are invited to share in its slower rhythm, seasonal beauty and authentic luxury. What inspired the retreat? We saw how modern life overwhelms us— constant noise, digital overload and little time to breathe. We created Chase Farm Retreat to meet a growing need: not just holidays, but restorative escapes in nature. This isn’t polished perfection; it’s real fires, starry skies, and deep exhale moments. Our wild spa in Sussex and nature-based activities offer authentic serenity rather than commercial spa glamour. Who is the retreat perfect for? Our retreat is ideal for: • Couples seeking a romantic luxury spa weekend near London • Families wanting nature-rich relaxation without crowds • Groups of friends planning a wellness break or rejuvenating getaway • Corporate teams wanting impactful leadership away-days and team-building retreats
If you value meaningful time together, private space and nature-led wellbeing, this is your place to reset. What amenities can guests expect? We offer two beautifully furnished threebedroom cottages featuring luxury Egyptian cotton bedding, duck-down duvets and fully equipped kitchens. Both cottages include private gardens and wood-fired hot tubs. The Spa Garden Cottage adds a private wild spa escape, with: • Wood-fired sauna • Cold plunge pool • Hot tub overlooking meadows and sunsets We welcome dogs with thoughtful “doggy packs”, offer generous enclosed gardens, private parking and EV charging points for modern ease and comfort. What activities are on offer? Whether you’re looking for personal wellness or corporate team development, our activities are designed to reconnect body and mind through nature. Experiences include: • Yoga, reiki, hypnotherapy & massage • Guided Nordic walking instruction & countryside rambles • Private guided mountain biking • Corporate leadership & team-connection workshops
• We will be introducing gong baths and one to one sound healing. What do you love about the area? Despite being so accessible from London, the landscape feels traditionally rural. Rolling fields, peaceful woodlands and star-filled skies offer a true change of pace. Yet we are minutes from local amenities, parks and takeaways, offering nature without inconvenience. What’s nearby? Guests can explore National Trust houses, English vineyards, award-winning gastropubs, castles, West Sussex beaches, the Knepp rewilding estate, hiking routes and artisan farm shops. It’s a paradise for walkers, wine lovers and slow-food enthusiasts. Why choose Chase Farm Retreat? Unlike a hotel, you’ll have your own private sanctuary. Our retreat offers authentic luxury accommodation near London paired with meaningful wellbeing. No crowds, no rush—just thoughtful hospitality, nature, and the space to truly unwind. What’s new for 2026? We’re expanding with new luxury cabins designed for group wellness getaways and corporate away-day retreats. From January, guests can also book private wild-spa day packages including exclusive spa access and a complimentary massage. We will also be offering themed retreats to support the menopause and eating for your gut-biome. Exclusive Offer

A new home awaits at
Ashmead Care Centre Maria Mallaband Care Group (MMCG) has invested in a major refurbishment to enhance the facilities, lifestyle, and accessibility at Ashmead Care Home in Putney. The care home, which specialises in the provision of nursing and dementia care, began major works in July, completely transforming all three floors, the reception area, and outdoor landscaping. The home remained open throughout, with minimal disruption to residents and staff. The work was successfully completed in December 2025.
The project has transformed living spaces, enhanced facilities, and created a welcoming environment for those living in the home, families, and staff. It has had significant upgrades including the creation of a bespoke reception area with a café/bistro and seating area, a new lifestyle suite, refurbished hair salon and a new wellness suite. Alongside this, there is an addition of a new private nursing unit and a luxury private dementia unit – which includes 30 bedrooms combined with modern bathrooms and a lounge. Luminita Cupsa, Home Manager, said: “This refurbishment is such an exciting chapter for Ashmead. Every room has been thoughtfully designed with comfort, accessibility, and wellbeing in mind. We’ve created a beautiful and modern space that truly feels like home, where those living with us can enjoy their independence, connect with others, and make the most of every day.”

OBJECTS OF ENCHANTMENT Local artist Alastair Gordon has captured Wimbledon Museum’s collection in a new light A forthcoming exhibition at Wimbledon Museum invites visitors to look again at the familiar, the forgotten and the quietly remarkable objects that shape the history of a place. Objects of Enchantment is a solo exhibition by the museum’s new artist-in-residence, Alastair Gordon, whose meticulously detailed paintings depict artefacts from the museum’s eclectic collection. Alastair explains: “The museum has this most fabulous collection, some of which dates back to the Roman period, all the way through to the suffragette movement and World War II. The hope is to share something of their story through art, perhaps with a new audience that wouldn't necessarily come to the museum.” The idea behind the project is to show what happens to even the simplest of objects when they are placed on a plinth in a museum or featured in a painting. He says: “When an object goes into a museum, it becomes more than it originally was when it’s part of a display. Painting can do something similar. An everyday object is elevated when it becomes the subject of a piece of art.” There will be 15 works in total. “I'm trying to be as faithful as I can to the artefacts themselves,” Alastair says, “but it’s also about how I see them and how I relate to the people they belonged to.” One piece depicts the dress of Wimbledon philanthropist Miss Kezia Peache; Alastair has painted her jabot in intricate detail, capturing the delicate folds and lace textures, and the sense of presence that clothing retains long after its wearer has gone. Alongside the artefacts, he has included the “mechanics of the museum”, such as the strips of paper used to record environmental conditions around each item. Alastair first discovered Wimbledon Museum around a year ago when he took part in the group exhibition Brush with the Past. “I think the museum is a bit of a hidden secret. I kind of fell in love with the collection,” he says. He soon proposed an artist residency, one that would allow him to delve more deeply into local history and interpret it through painting. The museum agreed, and for the last three months he has been selecting objects to reimagine on canvas.

Artist Alastair Gordon Photo © Ben Deakin Images Right, top to bottom: Alastair's paintings: A Lady’s Jabot, River God Red Teddy will feature in Alastair's paintings
Choosing what to paint was a collaborative process shaped by conversations with the museum team. Some pieces are wellknown, such as Red Teddy, a favourite in the collection. The museum’s Anita Lewisohn explains that the bear belonged to a family on Melrose Avenue who were saved from a flying bomb because they slept in their air raid shelter that night: they rarely used the damp shelter but that particular day their dog refused to come out. The only possessions to survive in the house were a hat, a chamber pot and the teddy.
for permanent display. Through painting, Alastair offers visitors a way to encounter them without exposing the originals to damaging light, preserving both the artefacts and the stories they carry.
A very different subject is the stuffed peacock that once roamed freely around the menagerie of Sir Henry Peek at Wimbledon House in the 1800s. Another striking inclusion is the keystone of a river god, once set into a bridge over the River Wandle. Alastair has painted the keystone in his signature style, flat yet almost sculptural, drawing on the 17th-century quodlibet tradition of trompe-l’oeil. Some items were found deeper within the museum’s archives, including a fragile set of pressed flowers sent home from the front lines during the First World War. The soldier who sent them never returned. The flowers became a cherished family keepsake too delicate
Alastair, who lives locally in Tooting, is known for his hyper-real paintings of objects and for his plein-air landscapes of Wimbledon Common, some of which he later re-paints in the studio, turning his own works into subjects. “I paint my own work to look like museum artefacts. It’s all very meta,” he jokes. For Alastair, who moved to London from Scotland 20 years ago, this project has been as much about community as technique, deepening his connection to the place he now considers home.
Objects of Enchantment will be displayed primarily in the museum’s gallery, with several works placed alongside their corresponding artefacts in the main collection. Workshops for visitors are planned, and many of the paintings will be available for purchase, with a portion of proceeds supporting the museum.

THE HOTLIST
Charli West takes a look at how and where we will be travelling in the year ahead, from rising destinations to immersive foody trips and literary retreats
Thailand
Destinations to bookmark
If you need some inspiration on where to go, Lonely Planet’s hotlist for 2026 includes the laid-back city of Quy Nhon in Vietnam for beautiful beaches and culture; Sardinia for nature and heritage, and wildlife viewing in Botswana. Meanwhile, Skyscanner has seen a 211% increase in searches for the charming port city of Salerno in Italy, a 156% increase for Koror, Palau, in the Pacific Ocean, and 106% for Kochi in Japan. Meanwhile, BBC Travel has highlighted alternatives to betterknown hotspots: Montevideo, one of South America’s greenest cities, has architecture and world-class tango to match Buenos Aires. Virtuoso identified Montenegro, Morocco, and Thailand as being on the rise, offering picturesque landscapes and more affordable costs.
Literary escapes
There’s no better feeling than escaping reality by immersing yourself in the world of fiction. Now travellers are taking it to a whole new level by using novels as a way to inspire their holiday destinations. According to Skyscanner, almost half of travellers have
Tokyo
Canadian Rockies
booked, or would consider booking, a trip inspired by literature. We can attest to that - Butter by Asako Yuzuki had me pining for a week in Tokyo.
Culinary immersion
Food plays a big part of the holiday for most but rather than just seeking out authentic local restaurants, travellers are increasingly visiting supermarkets to cook for themselves and feel more like a local. Skyscanner reports that almost three quarters of UK travellers always or often visit local supermarkets abroad, with 44% looking to discover new food and drinks.
Season stretching
Travelling during peak times is becoming less appealing with travellers looking to the shoulder seasons. For Europe, think April, May, September and October - when the weather is still good, but there’s a drop in tourist numbers and prices. Clearly, it’s mainly those without school-age children that are able to plan these trips, but if you are able to take advantage it’s a great way to see your dream destination.

Quiet travel and wellness
We all live incredibly busy lives with technology making it harder to switch off. So it’s no surprise that we’re turning to travel for a means to escape. Quiet travel or ‘hushpitality’ is popular. According to Hilton, the number one motivation for leisure travel in 2026 is to ‘rest and recharge’, which includes wanting to spend time in nature and improve mental health. This is also seen in the search for ‘restorative rituals’, says Booking.com, with one in four turning to ‘quieter’ hobbies on holiday that prioritise reflection, such as birdwatching, fishing and foraging. According to Virtuoso’s Luxe Report, wellness-focused journeys to restore balance and resilience are in demand, including Ayurvedic programmes in India, yoga-and-surf escapes in Costa Rica and retreats in the Canadian Rockies where silence is part of the healing. Mental health and longevity trips are seen as an investment in future health. T&L

The Schools Guide
THE EDUCATION AGENDA How local schools are preparing learners for a changing world As schools look ahead to 2026 and beyond, the educational landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. With rapid technological advancement, evolving societal needs and a renewed focus on pupil wellbeing, educators are rethinking what it means to prepare young people for the future. Artificial intelligence, sustainability, personalised learning, new qualifications and eco-focused initiatives are now central to school development plans. From reimagining the curriculum to celebrating individuality and resilience, schools are working to ensure that students thrive academically, emotionally and personally.
Strengthening STEAM education STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) continues to be a major priority. Schools recognise that combining technical disciplines with creativity encourages pupils to become flexible thinkers and confident problemsolvers. As technology develops apace, integrating arts within STEM fields helps nurture imagination and innovation, traits essential for the careers of tomorrow.
Engineering a bright future At Holy Cross Prep, the academic year has been declared the “Year of Engineering,” reflecting a strong commitment to nurturing
Claremont Fan Court School
curiosity, creativity and problem-solving among pupils. The school aims to help every child understand how engineering shapes the world, from everyday life to global challenges. Through hands-on projects, guest speakers, themed workshops and cross-curricular learning, pupils experience engineering as
an exciting and accessible field where their talents can make a tangible difference. Key events such as engineering focus days, a Steamterprise fair, Lego robotics competitions and partnerships with external experts help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world innovation. This focus supports the school’s broader mission: equipping pupils with future-ready skills, fostering resilience and celebrating innovation.
Cultivating innovation, leadership and resilience
Aberdour School
Adaptability has become one of the most valued skills in modern education. With industries shifting, global challenges emerging and digital landscapes reshaping learning, schools are placing renewed emphasis on resilience. At Marymount International School London, students are encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary projects in STEAM, engage in service learning, and explore real-world issues through research, entrepreneurship, and Model United Nations opportunities. Recent student-

led initiatives have tackled themes such as sustainable fashion and social justice, reinforcing the school’s approach to meaningful, future-focused learning.
Deeper understanding Schools are looking at how they can provide a rich learning experience. Claremont Fan Court School is placing a big emphasis on its three-year GCSE model, which allows pupils to begin their GCSE courses from Year 9. This approach gives pupils more time to build a secure understanding and develop their skills at a pace that, "feels purposeful rather than pressured." The school notes that this offers time and space for students to be stretched in an academically deeper and more meaningful way, building skills and knowledge beyond GCSE that are a better stepping stone to A-Level study.
Flexible approaches Personalised, flexible education is becoming increasingly important, particularly for pupils balancing demanding extracurricular commitments, health challenges or a need for non-traditional schooling environments. Queens Online School, a newly launched digital learning provider, offers Key Stage 3, IGCSE and A-Level programmes through small, live online classes taught by qualified UK teachers. Its structure supports students pursuing elite sports, managing wellbeing issues or seeking a customised approach to learning at home. Catering for ages 7 to 18, the school’s model reflects a broader trend: education tailored to individual lifestyles and needs, without compromising on academic quality. Meanwhile, the importance of outdoor-led
38
education is increasingly being recognised, with a big focus on developing social responsibility, creativity and emotional intelligence. While some schools offer this as their core ethos, many more are developing dedicated outdoor classrooms, garden spaces and eco-habitats to integrate nature into everyday teaching. Children develop a lifelong appreciation for the environment while strengthening their sense of responsibility as global citizens.
Encouraging curiosity Aberdour School is similarly embracing personalised learning through its P.A.L (Personalised Achievement & Learning) approach. Each child’s educational journey is tailored to their strengths, interests and aspirations, creating a learning environment where pupils feel known, valued and challenged. Alongside a strong academic foundation, Aberdour is investing in innovative learning experiences, from exploring the ethics of AI to outdoor education, digital fluency and the creative arts. The aim is to nurture curious thinkers and compassionate individuals. Rokeby prep school for boys also talks of the importance of happy, confident pupils with skills to navigate challenges. "Rokeby believes in bringing out the brilliant in each boy. This year we will be engaging our boys in learning about themselves and how they can best shine in every situation whilst learning all the time," they explain.
National Curriculum reforms Schools that follow the National Curriculum, unchanged since 2014, will be looking at how major updates will impact
them, with implementation beginning in September 2028. Creative subjects will be revitalised, there will be a bigger focus on oracy, as well as access to enriching activities. The importance of two hours of PE each week will be reinforced. Citizenship classes at primary level would include financial and media literacy as well as climate change and sustainability. Another key aspect is ensuring inclusive support for all abilities. The shift reflects a growing belief that academic rigour, creativity and physical wellbeing must coexist for pupils to flourish. One of the most significant changes in post-16 education is the introduction of V-Levels, from 2027, a new vocational qualification, alongside A-Levels and T-Levels.
Sustainable futures Sustainability remains a central focus for many schools. The global Eco-Schools programme encourages pupils to take active roles in caring for the planet. Its highest honour, the Green Flag with Distinction, recognises exceptional commitment to sustainability. Reigate St Mary’s Preparatory & Choir School recently received this prestigious award. Their initiatives include collaborative meat-free cookbooks, gardening missions, marine conservation projects and lessons on ocean plastics. Waste-reduction efforts, from Terracycle recycling to creative reuse for World Book Day costumes, further demonstrate the school’s commitment to environmental responsibility. RSM has also invested in sustainable infrastructure, including the new Beech Lodge, an eco-friendly classroom block. T&L

WHY THE EARLY YEARS MATTER: BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFELONG LEARNING EMMA FIELD, HEAD OF EARLY YEARS AT CLAREMONT FAN COURT’S JUNIOR SCHOOL DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF FIRST STEPS INTO EDUCATION AND HOW THE SCHOOL’S EARLY YEARS PROVISION NURTURES CONFIDENCE, CURIOSITY AND A LIFELONG LOVE OF LEARNING. High quality early years education lays the groundwork for future learning, helping children build secure relationships, develop early communication skills and grow in confidence from the very beginning. An expertly shaped and taught early years provision, right from age two in Pre-nursery gives children the strongest foundations for formal learning while preserving the wonder of childhood. At Claremont, we believe a child’s first steps into early years education should be filled with discovery and curiosity, where play and exploration nurture a love of learning. Set within Claremont’s 100 acres of beautiful parkland, our youngest learners benefit from indoor and outdoor learning areas reserved exclusively for them, thoughtfully designed to encourage purposeful exploration and creative learning throughout our curriculum. Through a play based approach, we create a warm, supportive environment where children build confidence, spark curiosity and engage with the world around them.
BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LEARNING Claremont’s early years provision is designed to encourage children to explore, experiment and learn at their own pace. It thoughtfully prepares pupils for the transition into formal education from Reception class and up, while keeping alive all the joy of being little. Our immersive, well structured learning activities are carefully designed to achieve key learning outcomes by: Developing an understanding of ourselves, others, and the world around us Learning through exciting lessons shaped around thoughtfully planned purposeful play, providing appropriate challenge and develop mastery of skills Nurturing, recognising and celebrating when a child displays key learner attributes such as curiosity, confidence, resilience, creativity and independence. Afterall, these lay the foundations for lifelong learning, helping children thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
ROOM TO GROW, SPACE TO BREATHE At Claremont, we nurture pupils in a setting that gives them room to grow, freedom to explore, and the space to breath and learn through play. Classrooms open out onto 14 acres of safe woodlands reserved especially for our earliest learners. Outdoor learning is central to school life, with spacious grounds where the children can run, climb and discover. As one parent says, “My daughter loves being outside, and this is why Claremont has been such a good choice for her.” EXPERT TEACHING & SPECIALIST SUBJECTS FROM PRE-NURSERY Every child at Claremont benefits from skilled, caring, and patient staff. From age two, even our youngest pupils learn with subject-specialist teachers. From Pre-Nursery, children enjoy weekly forest school in our woodlands, music, PE, and swimming in our on-site pool. From Nursery, French and computing are added, creating a rich early years curriculum that builds skills, confidence, and helps each child discover their passions.
“IN THE EARLY YEARS STAFF WORK CLOSELY WITH PARENTS TO SUPPORT EACH CHILD’S LEARNING AND PROGRESS.”

CONNECTION & COMMUNITY Our small class sizes and personalised support ensure every child feels seen and valued, and we actively encourage parents to speak with teachers, who are available in person at the start and end of each day. As a coeducational school that has taught girls and boys together from Prenursery to sixth form for almost fifty years, we offer the social confidence, balanced outlook and collaborative skills that grow from learning side by side. Our wraparound care and vibrant co curricular programme are run by familiar staff, providing consistency and comfort for families. Children also join a house from day one, fostering a sense of belonging and connection with older pupils. Together, these experiences nurture and celebrate the true potential of every individual child, right from the very start of their Claremont early years learning journey.

HOME STYLE UPDATE Interiors trends to try in 2026, from eclectic kitchens and bespoke tiling to wellness spaces and statement stone…

Restorative rooms Olive & Barr
Characterful kitchens
Rather than a uniform fitted kitchen, the heart of the home is becoming an eclectic space that blends into the living room, combining contemporary style with heritage pieces. There is freestanding furniture, comfortable seating and cosy touches such as rugs, and variety in surfaces. For detail, fluting continues to be popular. Natural wood is a big part of the new kitchen aesthetic, whether in cabinets or worktops, and darker woods such as walnut offer a dramatic yet warm look.
Sanctuary bathrooms are still top of the wishlist, but this desire for wellness spaces is being seen across the rest of the home too. Rooms make the most of natural light and increase the connection to the outdoors with glazed panels, window seats and roof lights. Colour theory is used to create calming or uplifting moods. Interest is added to understated schemes through the clever use of textures and metals.

Dark reds and burgundy Brown's Divine made their impact in Damson 2025 and are going nowhere. Graham & Earthborn's Freckle Brown’s Colour of the Year is Divine Damson, perfect for creating an opulent look. Meanwhile, earthy shades such as Freckle, Earthborn’s Colour of the Year, and pinks are also coming to the fore. The colour capping trend continues, using a tonal graduation from Benjamin Moore - colour capping the same colour family.

Urbane Living
The move towards celebrating the beauty of natural materials and all their imperfections continues in 2026. For wooden floors, visible grain, knots and colour variations are a feature not a fault. Wide planks and warmer colours are making a return too. Surfaces are practical but full of character. In tiles, it’s all about natural colours, texture and a hand-crafted look.

Up personal
Personalisation can be seen in everything from tiling to fabric. Small tiles and mosaics are back and are ideal to create a bespoke look, and chequerboard floors are given a twist. Statement stone can be used to create a unique feature with deep-veined and coloured marble bringing interest. Fabric will play a key role in creating a personal style, with textured weaves and heritage patterns all part of the equation. Stripes will also be making their mark in the year ahead. And if you want to get really creative, consider making a feature out of the ceiling or floor. T&L

A FRESH START Why the New Year Is the Perfect Time to Buy a Home by Denise Ryan, Ashworths Solicitors
A new year naturally brings with it a sense of possibility. It’s a time when many people reflect on what they want and their next chapter to look like. For some, that means pursuing a long-awaited career shift or booking an overdue adventure. For others, it means putting down new roots — and few decisions feel more symbolic of a fresh start than purchasing a new home. Whether you’re stepping onto the property ladder for the first time or moving to a home that better suits your lifestyle, buying residential property in the new year sets a hopeful tone. Markets often stabilise after the busy pre-holiday period, sellers are motivated, and buyers have the clarity that comes with setting intentions for the year ahead. However even in the most favourable conditions, the process of purchasing a property can be complex. That’s why choosing the right Lawyer to handle your conveyancing is every bit as important as choosing the right home. Why the New Year Is a Strategic Time to Buy Many buyers find the post-holiday period to be a particularly advantageous moment. Sellers who have been on the market for some time may be more open to negotiation, and new listings often begin to emerge as homeowners kick-start their own resolutions. Estate agents return from the festive break with fresh energy, and mortgage lenders frequently adjust or introduce new products in January. Beyond market dynamics, there’s also an emotional clarity that comes with new beginnings. You’re not just purchasing bricks and mortar — you’re creating the foundation for the life you want to build in the months and years to come. The Crucial Role of an Experienced Conveyancing Lawyer Once you’ve found the right property, the legal work that follows can feel daunting. Conveyancing involves Title checks, Contract negotiations, searches, enquiries, financial arrangements, and ensuring your interests are protected at every stage. This is where appointing an experienced and trustworthy Lawyer becomes invaluable. A skilled conveyancing Lawyer doesn’t just process paperwork — they safeguard your investment. They anticipate potential issues
before they become problems, explain complex legal matters in clear terms, and act as your personal advocate throughout the transaction. When timelines are tight or unexpected obstacles arise, having a calm and knowledgeable Professional on your side can make all the difference. Why Choosing Our Law Firm Adds Confidence to Your New Year Move Our firm understands that buying a home is one of the most significant financial commitments you’ll ever make. We also know it’s an experience that should feel exciting, not overwhelming. That’s why we combine legal excellence with a client-centred approach that prioritises communication, efficiency, and peace of mind. Here’s how we help you move forward with confidence: 1. Proven Expertise Our Conveyancing Team has years of experience handling everything from straightforward freehold purchases to more complex leaseholds, new-builds, and shared-ownership transactions. We’ve seen the full spectrum of potential issues — and we know how to prevent them from de-railing your plans. 2. promptly, and guide you through each stage so you always feel informed and in control. 3. Meticulous Attention to Detail Property law requires precision. We review every document carefully, ensuring that your rights are protected, your obligations are clear, and your investment is secure. 4. A Relationship Built on Trust Buying a home is personal. You deserve a Lawyer you can rely on — someone who listens, understands your priorities, and has your best interests at heart. Our Firm prides itself on building long-term relationships with clients who return to us time and time again.
