As the entire student body braced itself for the start of a new academic year, 2024-2025, the University Student Government (USG) Executive President Hon. Brian Paul Mesada held the academic year’s first-ever State of the Organization Address (SOA).
More than a month after taking office, Mesada shed light on his administration’s original projects and initiatives–in addition to continuing projects commenced by the previous USG. Hopefulness transparent from his voice, Mesada stated five key points–digressing periodically to address potential concerns as well as providing information on other initiatives and activities he plans to implement.
Mesada started off his speech by drawing parallels between his experience with that of the student body; anticipating the then Student Government’s plans, as well as the various councils under each college. In his own words, he aims to “set the pace,” by “identifying our goals and working hand-in-hand with one vision, all for the service of every Lasalista”. All these would serve as the driving force for his proposed plans and reforms, all the while emphasizing that it could “...allow Student Government accountability to arise.”
Ambition often falls flat without the clear will to back it up, yet as Mesada speaks of the coming events, he paints a clear picture of how life as a “Lasalista” will transpire this semester, with his Student Government as the spearhead. One of his main goals this semester is the institutionalization of the “Samahang Lasalyano”,
which he goes further into during the address proper. Another would be the Magna Carta for school publications, which would limit press freedom but could also paradoxically redefine how the publications interact with their audience.
In a bid to usher in a new era for the University, all eyes will be on how Mesada’s aforementioned plans and initiatives will materialize, all hopes pinned on the saying that “actions speak louder than words.” Would Mesada be the proponent of a brighter, Lasalista future in the ever-changing landscape of the University?
Will the students participate in the activities that the USG will be conducting? Since they will be strict regarding the student’s participation in the said activities, Mesada stated, “That’s also one way for us to be able to show how successful our activities and policies are for this academic year.” This statement underscores the importance of involvement, as it directly reflects the effectiveness of the USG’s efforts. It will also be the responsibility of all the offices to help the student government gather the data, with the aim of making this academic year’s activities not only successful but also meaningful and impactful for all students involved. Will that be a way for the USG’s success to push the events of this academic year?
Mayors should play the role of the leader of their class not only by position but by also demonstrating strong discipline and responsibility for themselves and the whole class. Mayors are expected to keep their classmates
informed about important announcements, deadlines, school events, and any other relevant updates, but not only that. As stated by Mesada, “Class mayors should be empowered in such [a] way that they should realize the weight of their position.” This statement highlights the significance of the mayor’s role, which involves more than just administrative duties. Whereas the mayors should be encouraging their respective classes to answer the evaluation forms intended to get further insights into the student body.
Faced with constantly evolving challenges and an everexpanding populace of students of various demographics, Mesada also addresses the SAGES request to incorporate “Persons with Disabilities” and “Scholars” as new sectors. “I believe that nothing beats awareness, but it shouldn’t stop there,” Mesada said. Indeed, awareness and understanding of the problems and challenges faced by the sectors under SAGES would be a step forward to address these issues, and pave a path towards– to quote him directly “Working together to create a safe community”.
Publications will have to consult with the USG in order for their content to be posted online, limiting journalistic freedom. Mesada said, “Those are things that need to be discussed because we understand that, of course, publications should have the freedom of the press.” The question is, why is there a need to discuss press freedom? A all, it makes way for diverse voices and perspectives to be heard, promoting informed decision-

making among the student body. However, it is important to balance press freedom with responsible journalism, ensuring that reporting is accurate and ethical–all in all, avoiding incited violence and the spread of misinformation.
Faith, Service, and Communion serve as core values for us Lasallians, with that said Mesada proposed the creation of AnimoVision and KITAHUB. AnimoVision aims to reignite previously existing community service programs as well as create new ones through the creation of volunteer opportunities, while KITAHUB will provide the means for students’ holistic spiritual development and foster a supportive environment regardless of faith. These initiatives demonstrate Mesada’s commitment to integrating faith and service into the daily lives of his fellow students and portray his resolve to strengthen these values.
Many questions remain unanswered, but it’s safe to
say that, Hon. Brian Paul Mesada’s SOA marks the start of an academic year filled with limitless potential, as plans continue to evolve, there remains ample opportunity for further growth and development. With a heavy emphasis on accountability, student empowerment, and the integration of the Lasallian core values, his administration is set to unite the Lasallian community through various initiatives such as the institutionalizing of “Samahang Lasalyano”, the Magna Carta for school publications, and the creation of AnimoVision and KITAHUB reflect his dedication to maintaining tradition but also urges the community to take a step forward towards the future. As the students embrace the academic landscape, Mesada’s leadership aims to steer the community toward a future grounded in shared values, collaboration, and a deep commitment to progress, all towards fostering the development, growth, and unity of all Lasalistas.
