The MOA signified the commitment of both parties to mitigate the problems posed by plastic wastes to the environment, focusing on its research study titled “Assessment and Management of Plastic Waste Streams and their Leakages in Bacolod City, Philippines.”
This collaboration will center on solid waste management, specifically to
manage and handle the plastic waste landscape in Bacolod City, providing for intervention and a broader understanding of the local environmental concerns.
Focusing on identifying key sources, understanding waste streams, and developing effective management strategies, this research initiative will pave the way to a sustainable environment that
features eco-friendly waste management practices.
By sharing distinct viewpoints and skills of every participating faculty researcher, this collaboration will not only strengthen the academic relationship between USLS and University of Kassel, but this will also highlight the ability of both institutions in tackling issues in the real world.
The partnership between the two institutions will showcase the importance of international collaborative efforts in contributing to the global sustainability agenda, eventually leading to a master plan that can likewise prove useful to other communities that may face the same issues.

SAGES: Safe Space for Marginalized Student Sectors
By: Cassandra Heaven Estelloso
“There is no uniform for abuse... In the Lasallian Campus, in the Lasallian Community, dialogue is always the most potent strategy or mechanism to effect changebut the dialogue starts with listening to each other without judgment,” remarked Dr. Rowena V. Bañes, RGC, LPT, RPsy, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), during the inaugural conference of the Sectoral Action Group for Empowered Students (SAGES) organized by the Department of Advocacy Programs (DAP) on November 8, 2023, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM at the Cody Conference Hall.
The event not only introduced a new platform but also marked the signing of Executive Order No. 1, Series of 2023, recognizing SAGES as an official avenue for marginalized students, primarily the pioneer sectors: SAGE Athletes, SAGE Women, SAGE LGBTQIA+, and
SAGE Working Students.
Hon. Ken Paolo G. Gilo, the University Student Government (USG) Executive President, delivered the opening remarks, reflecting on the significance of SAGES and emphasizing the importance of understanding the unique challenges faced by
each sector. He highlighted the power of shared experiences as a catalyst for collective action, which drives the said platform.
“We don’t want the band-aid solution. What we want is that it must be there through and through... We want to institutionalize it,” Gilo emphasized that SAGES is not a temporary or term-long solution but a permanent and enduring platform that will continue to be vital in the university’s commitment to empowering its students and constituents.
Gilo presented survey results from the recent USLS Higher Education Unit Orientation Program (UHOP), indicating a need for dress code reform, particularly regarding women wearing shorts. This aligns with USG’s efforts to foster discussion and dialogue with students, setting a precedent for envisioned changes by women’s sector and marginalized groups.
DAP Secretary Jaica Mae D. Madrid outlined the conference’s objectives; probing deeper into vulnerable sectors of the university, addressing prioritized issues, advocating for necessary changes or reforms within the university, and formulating the essential steps for SAGES: Safe Space for Marginalized Student

Navigating ACTION in VISION
In a place of education, where learning meets communion, a significant event took place - the first-ever State of the Organization Address (SOA) by University Student Government (USG) Executive President Ken Paolo Gilo. The address, marked by transparency and ambition, led us through six important levels, offering a clear look at where we stand and what the future holds.
Gilo started by reflecting on his early days in office. He spoke openly about the fast steps his team took, showing their commitment to getting everything done. In a remarkably productive span of two months, the government has orchestrated a series of impactful initiatives such as the: “Amazing Race,”
“USPLASH,” academic policy improvements and support services, environmental discussions, and enhanced student leadership. Within a brief timeframe, their proactive leadership, strong community engagement, commitment to learning, and effective approach to societal issues reflect their responsiveness to the everchanging university environment.
The actions taken paved the way for what remains to be accomplished. The USG President laid out his vision for the semester, emphasizing goals beyond grades, focusing on improving student life and fostering an active community where every voice is valued. Moving from micro to macro, the address expanded to encompass the entire university, offering a comprehensive perspective on the significant role of the USG. Gilo went beyond the traditional USG role, highlighting a student government prioritizing action over rhetoric, ushering tangible changes.
As the address concluded, Gilo’s rallying call beckoned all members of the university to unite, emphasizing the collective responsibility we share in shaping our academic journey, akin to a pre-game huddle before a crucial match.
This reminder resonates: each individual is integral to our university’s growth. “We can only do so much with the time and resources that we have,” Gilo emphasized, highlighting priorities derived from consultations—a commitment to positive change. Outcome 1. At its core, education transcends learning alone; it’s a unifying force. Gilo envisions a world where everyone is
welcome, where everyone has a seat at the table. “Lasallian learners are unique and gifted individuals who express concern and compassion for the pleit of the vulnerable and marginalized sectors of the society […],” he stands on the idea that our community goes beyond academics; it’s about embodying values that are “more humane, more just, and more fraternal.”
Outcome 2. Gilo also addressed the importance of looking out for those who might be struggling. The goal is about extending a helping hand, to make sure no one is left behind. It’s like helping a friend when they need it most. He further elaborates on the outcome, urging a rise in students’ awareness and involvement in social and political matters.
Outcome 3. Education at this institution goes beyond the confines of textbooks; it’s about exploring knowledge lead by our own passions that push us to be the best we can be. Gilo invites us to be curious, to ask questions, to a journey where learning is not limited by printed words, but rather an exploration of innovative and fresh perspectives.
Outcome 4. Gilo believes that our university is like a big family. Lasallian education is a lively journey, it’s an environment of camaraderie, warmth, and conversations in a respectful, friendly, and welcoming air. The goal is to make sure we all feel part of that family
Outcome 5. The USG President believes that communities share the responsibility of fostering an environment that encourages real learning and active growth. Learning at this institution goes beyond exam scores, Gilo aims to ensure Lasallians a smooth journey on the road to graduation.
Outcome 6. Lastly, Gilo’s call to action resonates strongly. The sixth outcome holds particular significance to the student leaders, that “while we spend our time [and] resources to deliver our mandate as student leaders in the university, we also want each and [every] one of us to grow throughout the process.” This aligns with the idea that leadership isn’t confined to external actions; it’s a journey that transforms us from within. Each task we commit to, every challenge we overcome, contributes to our growth as individuals. Gilo’s vision goes beyond the immediate goals of our roles, extending to the lifelong pursuit of becoming better versions of ourselves.
Embrace Gilo’s vision: active involvement, dialogue, and constructive change. We’re all part of the bigger picture, each with a role to play. Together, we light the path for all.

As eerie images form from ponder
With brisk naivete, I wander through soaring windows of wonder
Frolicking in peculiar dreams I have not seen, Formed by the obscurity of imagination;
In reality and the abstract, I’m stuck between Gallivanting in picturesque destinations
Shut my eyes and open my heart
For reverie and I shall never part
Take me anywhere but here;
To dreams I hold so dear

UMAMIN FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH TIGRIS
By: Danea Ellery Zerudo
This partnership will definitely improve the messaging experience of both platforms’ users, according to the statement released by Tigris and Umamin.
For instance, Umamin is a messaging platform that allows people to send anonymous messages. Users have found the app helpful when they need to confess or discuss anything
In the emergence of recent digital interaction, Umamin, the brainchild of visionary creator Josh Daniel Bañares, has carved a distinctive path as a platform that redefines anonymous expression. Reflecting on the app’s creation, Bañares unveils the inspiration behind Umamin, a platform born out of a desire to elevate the experience of anonymous expression.
Before Umamin graced the digital stage, Bañares observed the shortcomings of prevalent anonymous Q&A services— cluttered interfaces, incessant ads, and a lack of user-friendliness, leaving him questioning their popularity. “During that time, I was learning new technologies… and I thought why not build yet another anonymous platform, but better?” the young Lasallian shared.
Armed with a vision for a better, more user-centric anonymous platform, Bañares, alongside two co-founders, embarked on a two-week development journey. On July 27, 2022, Umamin v0.1.0 was unveiled to the world as an “ad-free anonymous messages platform.”
To their surprise, Umamin quickly went viral on Facebook, attracting thousands of users every hour. Operating initially
without letting anyone know who they are. It is common among individuals that seek an avenue to share their thoughts and secrets anonymously and without being judged.
Conversely, Tigris is a publication platform of the College of Engineering & Technology. This will now mean that users of Tigris can make use of Umamin’s anonymous messaging services thereby increasing their experiences.
Umamin will gain an additional active user base while Tigris gets more interaction in accordance with this partnership agreement. The deal is also expected to enhance both sites through attraction of new as well as enhancing existing subscribers’ message experiences.

UMAMIN: BREAKING THE INTERNET AS WE BREAK OUR SILENCE!
By: Ricci Princess Ramos
as an ad-free platform, Umamin faced financial challenges as user traffic surged. It operated at a loss for three months until the introduction of Google AdSense for monetization. As of now, Umamin has attracted over 2.2 million unique users and amassed over 12.3 million page visits since its release in 2022.
Umamin’s overarching purpose is clear: to be the ultimate platform for anonymous messages. What sets Umamin apart is its commitment to enhancing user experience through unique features and an open-source model. “I firmly
believe that transparency is crucial for anonymous platforms,” Bañares stands by his duty as the creator to ensure and safeguard the anonimty of his users, making every line of Umamin’s code publicly available on GitHub. This open-source approach fosters collaboration among developers, creating a platform where improvement is a collective effort.
Breaking down communication barriers and contributing to users’ mental wellbeing are central objectives for Umamin. By offering a judgmentfree space, Umamin empowers
users to express themselves openly. The platform’s latest feature, Umamin Global, extends this connection by allowing users to share thoughts with a broader audience. This move enhances the sense of community, where empathy and mutual respect thrive. Umamin’s commitment to user privacy and data security ensures a safe space for users to engage authentically.
As Umamin looks to the future as a Lasallian-owned platform, it envisions empowerment and community building as core principles. The still-growing application aspires to be a safe space where users can share experiences, seek support, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Umamin Global is poised to play a role in connecting users and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.
Umamin stands as a testament to innovation, transparency, and community connection under the pretense of self-expression. Bañares’ vision has transformed Umamin into a platform that not only empowers users but also exemplifies the spirit of trust and openness. As Umamin continues to evolve, it reinforces its commitment to user well-being, transparency, and the Lasallian values that guide its journey to this day.
