EMO ADAMS Emo Adams was only 9 years old when he stole the hearts of the audience members in David Kramer and Taliep Petersen’s musical, District 6. In 2007 Emo released his first CD, “Tall, Dark & Afrikaans”. Ever since he has been on the go entertaining audiences at big festivals and shows all over South Africa, TV series and his chat show, Jou show met Emo, which is one of kykNET’s most popular shows. AWSUM asked him a few questions about fatherhood and his plans for 2018. What were the highs and lows of your school career? Meeting Nelson Mandela at our school. I sang an anthem to him which was known as the unofficial anthem back then. I did not know the words so I had to sing it off a page. There weren’t many lows during school. The only low was on my first day of Standard 6 (Grade 8) when the police raided our school. I would say that was my low. Any stories your old high school teacher would tell us? I really don’t know what my teachers would say, because I wasn’t loud. I was a quiet, and average student and did not even make jokes or anything. March last year, you became a dad for the second time. What do you enjoy about fatherhood? I think everything. I have been an entertainer my whole life so fatherhood is very new to me and you learn something every day. It’s not like entertainment – you present something different, add a few lights and then it’s a new show, but with kids you learn something every day. The whole experience is what’s amazing to me. Rehearsal, shows, teething, nappies, what’s your recipe to keep all the balls in the air? If someone knows the concept of that recipe I would pay that person. Everyone’s life is different, so you try to fit everything you can into one day. The best I can do is to give 100% at work and 100% when I am home. That is like the best case scenario.

What do you do to relax? I don’t really relax, but if I do it’s with the family. Our family made a pact that every Sunday we will take a break from everything and spend time together. That was kind off our new year’s resolution and has worked well for us so far. Luckily my wife is taking me to Thailand for my birthday so that will be a nice vacation. Who is your biggest motivator/cheerleader? There are a few people, but my biggest cheerleader would be my wife. She supports me with everything that I do even if she thinks I’m taking on too much work or I need to take it slow. And then my manager Olivia Gildenhuys. She is the second one that will always motivate me to reach higher grounds and shoot for the stars. Also my friends, the group JAG, my parents and, like everyone, I have a lot of good people in my corner that always motivates me. You worked with a few big names in the industry, namely David Kramer and Taliep Petersen. Any life lessons you learnt from these icons that you want to share with the readers? You really do learn something from everybody and obviously the longest time of my career was with Taliep Petersen and David Kramer, but you learn so much of all the people. You steal with your eyes and learn, make mistakes and you try to improve. Even with my director Basil Appolis, we worked together for years and I know exactly what he wants. He inspires me to write my own scripts and to start producing and directing. There are quite a few people that inspire me, but I think for me, I would say the community of Mitchell’s Plain, because if you look at their

lifestyle you get inspired to try better. You can see that all of them try to do better in life and it gives me the courage to try harder. You and your wife, Michelle Gildenhuys is the perfect image of the new South Africa and that love conquers all. Any advice? She is a very good activist and example for what our country should be. I wouldn’t say it’s a new South Africa, you can only be “new” so many times but we must try to change the mentality of people or what they are used to. They say you can’t learn an old dog new tricks but you can teach the new people. That’s the reason why she does motivational talks at schools. The youth is the people you need to help and who can make a difference. She is definitely a great advocate for what this country should be. What’s on the horizon for 2018? The Emo 30 show for kykNET and my 40th birthday. It’s cool to know that you have been in the industry for so long and also relevant for so long. I know there were many before me and there would be many after me, but I have seen a lot of people come and go and you never hear from them again. Any funny memes that you saw lately? I don’t know, the last one a read was don’t be so ‘judgerag’…it is a word for when you judge people. What is you favourite hashtag? #awkard

Tortilla de Espinacas
(Spinach omelette – Spanish style) This Colombia n recipe is adapted to a Spanish-style tortilla and makes a lovely light lunch when served with a crisp side salad and avocado slices
Ingredients Serves: 2-3 • • • • • • • •
1 medium-sized onion 200 g potatoes 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 200 g fresh spinach, thoroughly washed 5 large eggs 1 fresh medium-heat chilli, finely chopped Pinch of snipped fresh chives to garnish
Preparation 1. Cut the onion in half and then thinly slice into half-moons. 2. Peel the potatoes and slice into thin rounds, thoroughly drying in a cloth thereafter. 3. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan of approximately 20 cm in diameter until very hot, then add the potatoes and onion and toss until well coated with the oil.
4. Season to taste and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cook, covered, for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft (they should not brown), shaking the pan every so often. 5. In a saucepan, lightly steam the spinach. Once cooked, squeeze out all the liquid (it is very important to get all the liquid out) and chop finely. Set aside until needed. 6. Lightly beat the eggs and season with salt and pepper. 7. When the onion and potatoes are cooked, raise the heat to medium, thoroughly mix in the spinach and chilli before adding the egg mixture to the pan. 8. Reduce to low heat and cook for 20 minutes, uncovered. 9. Every so often, run a palette knife around the edges of the omelette to prevent it sticking. 10. When there is no liquid left on top of the omelette, turn it over with the help of a large plate and cook for 2 minutes more (it should remain moist in the middle). 11. Sprinkle with fresh chives before serving.

Evening with rugby legends SACS hosted an evening with legendary rugby men on Thursday 19 April in their prestigious memorial quad. Hosted by the prolific and very witty Howard Khan, the panel included World Sevens Series top ref Rasta Rashivenge, “Prince of Wings” Carel du Plessis, former Saracens stalwart Ernst Joubert, DHL Stormers forward and 2017 WP Currie Cup-winning captain, Chris van Zyl, former WP hardman Keith Andrews and Maties Varsity Cup scrum guru Marius Hurter. The evening was in aid of two rugby tours that the SACS rugby sides will embark on, later in 2018. Investec and Hussar Grill have come on board as some of the main sponsors for the Newlands school. Barry van Selm and the event organisers did well to get such a strong yet very well balanced panel to make the crowd part of the conversation. Khan held the audience captivated with some light-hearted banter between panel members as some sporting icons that were among the few hundred in attendance. The likes of South Africa batting legend Peter Kirsten, DHL Stormers player Scarra Ntubeni, SA referee Egon Seconds and 2007 World Cup-winning Springbok conditioning coach, Steve Mac were entertained by the amazing panel. Each panel member shared some interesting stories. Rashivenge shared his path where he started out as a professional analyst until he took up the whistle. The former Jeppe rugby player believes that the game of rugby is more than just a whistle or a piece of leather. He took charge of the Rio Olympic Gold medal match, which Fiji ultimately won. Rasta has emphasised the importance of sevens rugby in a South African context and urged SARU to invest more into the shorter format. “South Africa should invest more in Sevens,” he mentioned. “Sevens develops certain skills like catching, passing and dominating the breakdown, which in fifteens is considered to the key pillars.” Hurter, who was part of the historic 1995 World Cup winning squad, reminisced on the days where he and former Blue Bulls lock Krynauw Otto were roommates for the duration of the World Cup. Hurter joked and said when Khan asked what the fascination about the tight five really is, if he could he would select three sets of tight five in the starting lineup. This stemmed from the conversation about how important the scrum facet has become in the modern game. Du Plessis said that the players need to be confident in their abilities and skills, referring to the Super Rugby match between the Rebels and Jaguares when the Rebels opted for an attacking scrum as opposed to the more conservative route and taking the three points thus settling for the draw. “You have to back yourself in those dying moments,” du Plessis said. “What you do in those final minutes can define you as a player and as a team.” The audience was also introduced to the conversation when they were allowed a question or two, to the panel. All-around good and sound conversation and wisdom from an illustrious panel, an evening well executed by the SACS rugby department.

Tony Ryan and Jane Hampton shine at National Teaching Awards Jane Hampton (RBPS Grade R teacher) and Tony Ryan (RBPS Headmaster) have both achieved Bronze awards at the National Teacher Awards gala function held at the Sandton Convention Centre towards the beginning of this year. Jane has taught at Little Bosch for 10 years, the RBPS Grade facility. She says: ”I feel honoured to be recognized for the work that I do. As teachers we often work hard for very little recognition outside of our school context, and so to be acknowledged on a national level is overwhelming and encourages me in the job that I do”. She makes sure the boys learn social skills, can follow routine and work within a more structured environment, all the while having fun. Her most important role is cheerleader - encouraging her learners to try their best and supporting them in their learning. If they believe in themselves they can go far! Jane is inspired by the boys that she teaches and she is leader of a happy, supportive team of teachers at Little Bosch. She would encourage teachers never to stop learning and be humble enough to ask for advice and help when needed. Tony received the Nelson Mandela Lifetime Achievement Award for service to education over a distinguished 42-year career in teaching. He was the deputy head at Rondebosch Boys’ High and at Pretoria Boys’ High before taking over the leadership at Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory during 1997. “This award means a tremendous amount to me. To have been awarded this in my last year before retirement and during the Mandela Centenary year make it special”, says Ryan. He feels that, particularly in light of comments made by the new State President during the State of the Nation address, that teachers should all be heeding the call to do what they can to get children in their classes to perform at their best. He says he is fortunate to be part of a very hardworking and committed staff who have produced top academic results while developing excellent young men of value over the years. Over the last 20 years Tony has been mentoring new principals and supporting them through difficult matters in their schools. “I see this as a strength and something I would like to be doing when I retire from the WCED”, he said.

With much anticipation the boys and girls played extremely well and done the school proud. The netball played 4 matches and rugby played 6 matches. Our players enjoyed the tour making new friends. This was an amazing pre-season tour to get the boys and girls ready for the upcoming season that they are all very excited for. Thank you to all our coaches and staff members that assisted on the tour.

The first teams in netball, hockey, soccer and rugby travelled to Mossel Bay to participate in the Arthur Johnson Sports Tournament. It was good preparation for the winter season, and Aneeqah Davids was selected for the hockey “all stars” team headed to Egypt in September. The u16 rugby boys travelled to Portugal where they participated in an international u16 schools tournament in Lisbon. The Grade 12 History Tour was undertaken by 12 learners and 2 teachers. Starting in Kimberley at the Big Hole, they traveled to Soweto visiting iconic
Weibelfeldtschule at GSHS.
destinations and were privileged to spend the evening with Antoinette Sithole, sister of the late Hector Pietersen. Visits to the Constitutional Court, Apartheid Museum and Liliesleaf Farm were insightful and memorable with the tour ending at the Cradle of Humankind. 17 Students and 2 teachers from our German partner school, Weibelfeldtschule in Dreieich, also connected with us for two weeks -- sightseeing, attending classes and immersing themselves in Capetonian culture. All these events are testament to the fact that Groote Schuur High School is a school of opportunity.

US Science Expo send off
On Saturday 14 April a group of our music students met in the school hall for a music concert, where they each performed one piece. There was a variety of instruments: piano, keyboard, guitar, violin, saxophone and drums. Each performer received a certificate and there were refreshments served afterwards, as well as photos that were taken of the performers and their parents. The performers were also given important advice on how to practice their instruments effectively.
