Allan Miles

COACH OF THE FIRST TEAM RUGBY : SELBORNE COLLEGE

What can the school and parents expect from your team this Interschools?

Our boys will give it everything they have and put their bodies on the line. For our Matrics, this will be the final time they wear the black and white jersey and their last chance to run out on the “Fortress.”

There’s pride, passion, and legacy at stake — and you can expect a performance that reflects the heart and soul of Selborne College.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against Grey High?

As this is the final week of our season, the focus is on keeping energy levels high while sharpening our accuracy in key areas like the set piece and general play. Preparation is less about volume and more about precision and staying mentally switched on.

Where would you say your strengths lie this year? We’ve gone toe-to-toe with some of the country’s strongest rugby schools this season and have never once backed down. Our school’s motto, “Reward is to the brave,” perfectly sums up this team. Courage and resilience have been our foundation — not only on the field but in how these players handle every challenge they face.

Who has had the greatest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

I’ve been fortunate to learn from many great coaches over the years, but Jake White stands out. His approach to the game, his clarity in leadership, and the standards he sets have left a lasting impression on me — both as a coach and as a person.

What message do you convey to your team just before they run onto the field?

Stay in the moment and enjoy every second of it. These are the days they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

GREY HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY FIRST XV Matt King

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

That we give our best and never give up.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend’s match?

The same as every week: three practices, a couple of meetings, a few gym sessions, and some positive affirmations.

Where would you say your strength lies this year?

In the culture created by the boys. They are focused on hard work above all else.

Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

Robbi Kempson, Darron Nel, Simon Bolze, and Sean O’Dea.

What message do you convey to your team just before they run onto the field?

Keep it simple. Adapt fast. Speak kindly to yourself. Breathe.

What specific strengths do you believe this year’s team has that will set you apart from the competition?

This year’s team is built on unity and resilience. We may not have racked up the most victories or fielded the biggest pack, but what sets us apart is how we play for each other. Our discipline, relentless work ethic, and strong brotherhood on and off the field make us incredibly tough to break down. We’ve put in the hard yards — especially on defence, fitness, and mental toughness — and that’s where we back ourselves.

How does it feel to run onto the field representing your school as part of the first team?

It’s an honour I’ve dreamed of since Grade 9. Running out in the black and white jersey, hearing the Selborne war cry from the stands, and knowing you’re part of something bigger than yourself — it’s a feeling that’s hard to describe. It’s pride, adrenaline, responsibility, and gratitude all wrapped into one.

What traditions or values make your school’s rugby culture unique?

Selborne rugby is deeply rooted in tradition, grit, and pride. Our war cries, the reverence we show for the jersey, and the brotherhood that transcends generations — these elements define our rugby culture. We play for every

What team goals have you set for the season?

Beyond the pursuit of wins, our main goal has been to leave behind a legacy we’re proud of. That means playing with heart, showing resilience when it matters most, and never backing down. We want to be remembered as the team that gave it everything — no shortcuts, no regrets.

Which upcoming fixture excites you the most, and why is it a key match for your team?

Our final fixture against Grey High School (PE) is one we’re all fired up for. It’s not just the last match of the season — it’s the last time us Matrics get to wear the jersey. Grey is always a top-quality side, and it will demand our very best. With all the emotion and significance attached to this game, it’s shaping up to be something special.

Is there a professional rugby player you look up to? What aspects of their game or leadership inspire you?

Siya Kolisi is a massive inspiration. His journey, his leadership under pressure, and the humility he shows on and off the field — that’s the kind of captain I strive to be. He leads with purpose, lifts those around him, and always puts his team first.

EvAN MUCKA

What specific strengths do you believe this year’s team has that will set you apart from the competition?

We’re a young, talented group with a sharp eye for opportunities that most teams might miss. There’s a great mix of flair, skill and physicality — and that combination allows us to stay competitive in any game.

How does it feel to run onto the field representing your school as part of the first team?

It’s an incredible honour to lead the 1st XV. Every time I hear our school cheering and shouting for the men in azure, it gives me goosebumps. There’s nothing quite like it.

What traditions or values make your school’s rugby culture unique?

Our Saturday derbies are unmatched — the atmosphere, the gees, and of course, Bones (our legendary head cheerleader) taking control of the show. The school war cry, the pride of wearing azure blue, and our mascot Fred all add to the passion and brotherhood that makes Grey rugby so unique.

What team goals have you set for the season?

Right now, I’ve got one goal left — to beat Selborne in the slums. That last match of the season is always a battle, and I’m looking forward to ending our

campaign on a high.

Which upcoming fixture excites you the most, and why is it a key match for your team?

The Selborne College game. The rivalry runs deep, and it’s always a fiercely contested match. It’s personal, and as our final game in a Grey jersey, we’re determined to give it everything.

Is there a professional rugby player you look up to? What aspects of their game or leadership inspire you?

Malcolm Marx is someone I really admire — from his pinpoint lineout throws to his physical presence as a carrier. He plays the game with power and respect, and that inspires me to keep pushing and improving.

WE CAUGHT

UP WITH

GRAY VAN HEERDEN, FIRST TEAM HOCKEY CAPTAIN AT SELBORNE COLLEGE

What are your team’s biggest strengths, and how do you plan to capitalise on them this season?

Our short corner unit has been deadly this season — it’s won us matches against top opposition and continues to be one of our most effective weapons. But it’s our work rate, both on and off the ball — especially up front — that creates those chances. We’ve built our game on passion, pressure, and energy, and we’ll continue to play with that same intensity in every match.

What does it mean to you to lead your school’s hockey first team?

It’s a massive honour. After years of playing in the side — and even more years watching from the sidelines — leading this team is incredibly special. As it’s my final year, I want to lead from the front until the very end, giving my all for the badge and the brothers beside me.

How would you describe your school’s hockey culture, and what makes it unique? Selborne’s hockey culture is built on passion, unity, and a relentless commitment to one another. It’s more than just a sport — it’s a community. From early morning sessions to high-intensity matches, there’s a shared pride in wearing the black and white. That family bond across players, coaches, and supporters is what makes it unique.

What are your main goals as a team for this season?

Our biggest goal now is to finish the season undefeated in derby fixtures. We’ve worked hard all year, and we want to close it out strong.

Kenneth Friend

COACH OF THE FIRST TEAM HOCKEY BOYS: SELBORNE COLLEGE

What can the school and parents expect from your team this Interschools?

The school and parents can expect a team that plays with passion, discipline, and immense pride in representing Selborne. We’ve built a united squad that competes with intensity and respect for the game. Win or lose, our boys will leave it all on the field — they play for each other, for the badge, and for every supporter in the stands.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against Grey High?

Preparation starts well before match day. We review past performances, study the opposition’s strengths and weaknesses, and tailor our sessions accordingly. Training focuses on tactics, set pieces, and mastering the basics. Mental preparation is also key — we work on staying composed under pressure and sticking to our game plan. As the game approaches, we manage physical load to ensure the boys are sharp and ready. I’m lucky to work alongside a fantastic coaching team — together, we workshop ideas to find the best strategy for each fixture.

Where would you say your strengths lie this year?

Our biggest strength is undoubtedly the unity in the group. The trust and connection the players have with one another have translated into strong chemistry on and off the field. Tactically, our defensive structure and ability to transition swiftly into attack have been core strengths throughout the season.

Who has had the greatest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

I’ve been privileged to learn from several outstanding coaches throughout my career. Rather than one single person, it’s been a collective of mentors who’ve shaped my philosophy — emphasising the importance of not just developing skilled players, but raising good young men. I also draw inspiration from international coaches who’ve embraced and mastered modern, high-tempo hockey.

What message do you convey to your team just before they run onto the field?

I always remind them to trust the preparation, play with courage, and enjoy the moment. I encourage them to represent Selborne with honour, support one another relentlessly, and focus on executing our strengths. Most importantly, I tell them to walk off that field knowing they gave everything — for their teammates, their school, and themselves.

Which fixture excites you most, and why is it significant?

There are two major ones: Queen’s College at home — it’s always a physical and high-stakes game, and the energy is unmatched. And then Grey High at home, which is the big one. It’s one of the most anticipated clashes for both schools, with decades of rivalry behind it. Plus, being our final game, on home turf, makes it even more emotional for us Matrics — it’s the perfect way to end our school hockey journey.

Which hockey player or sports figure do you look up to, and how has their career influenced your approach to the game?

Two players I really look up to are Ben van de Merwe and Tré Gilbert — both former Selborne captains and SA players. I was lucky to grow up playing alongside them, watching them lead, train, and play with heart. They’ve set a standard I’ve always aspired to and have helped shape me both as a person and as a player.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against Selborne?

Every opponent deserves our full attention, and Selborne is no exception. The boys will train with intensity and focus, ensuring we’re prepared in every department. We concentrate on our team principles and executing them well as a unit.

Where would you say your strengths lie this year?

This group of players finds ways to win, even when they’re not at their best. They’ve developed a resilient mindset and a real hunger to succeed — it’s that winning mentality that sets them apart.

Who has had the greatest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

Neville Rothman, who is currently the assistant coach of the Irish men’s national team, has been a key mentor in my coaching journey. His knowledge, guidance, and friendship have made a massive impact on me both personally and professionally.

What message do you convey to your team just before they run on the field?

Play as a team, believe in the process and our principles — and most importantly, enjoy every moment out there!

INSIDE THE TEAM WITH LUKE TAIT, CAPTAIN OF GREY HIGH’S FIRST HOCKEY TEAM

What are your team’s biggest strengths, and how do you plan to capitalise on them this season?

Our biggest strengths are our discipline, squad depth, and unwavering trust in our system. Every player knows their role, but more importantly, we play for each other. That selfless mindset gives us the edge, especially under pressure.

What does it mean to you to lead your school’s hockey first team?

It’s an honour that’s hard to put into words. Grey has a long and proud hockey tradition. Wearing the captain’s armband means I’ve been trusted to lead not just a team, but a legacy. It’s something I carry with pride every time I step onto the field.

How would you describe your school’s hockey culture, and what makes it unique?

Grey hockey is built on brotherhood and high expectations. From the junior teams to the first XI, we uphold a consistent standard. What sets us apart is the passion — not only from the players but also from the school, the old boys, and our coaches. It’s a shared pride that fuels our performance

What are your main goals as a team for this season?

Our goals are simple but powerful: compete and dominate every game, stay united through pressure, and leave the jersey in a better place. While winning matters, our ultimate mission is to build strong men of character and integrity.

Which fixture excites you most, and why is it significant?

Our final fixture against Selborne is the one we’re most excited for. It’s more than just a match — it’s our chance to protect our unbeaten derby day status and send off the matrics with pride. That game holds meaning for everyone in the team.

Which hockey player or sports figure do you look up to, and how has their career influenced your approach to the game?

Caden Skinnett, a former Grey High player, is someone I really admire. As a junior, I looked up to the way he gave everything in every match. His discipline and consistency at the top level reminded me that talent alone isn’t enough — it takes hard work and humility to truly succeed.
