Stellies geared up for 24th MTBS The 24th annual instalment of the MTBS Athletics Meeting is set

to get underway in the first week of February 2018 at Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town. The host school, Stellenberg High – who is one-quarter of the quartet of participating schools including DF Malan High, Tygerberg High, and Bellville High School – have won the Athletics Championship since 2013. Up until last year, two championship divisions were awarded, one based on pure athletic results and the other is known as the Pavillion Championship. This is decided based on the best performance and synchronised cheering in the stands. DF Malan dominated the meet in the early noughties, but no school has won the Pavillion Championship more times than Stellenberg – a record ten times. Ironically, last year Stellenberg claimed the Athletics Championship by a large margin and DF Malan were named Pavillion Champions. 2017 also saw the introduction of a new championship section, the Spirit Champions. The latter is awarded to the school with the most ‘gees’. “We are lucky to have Coach Johann Swart as one of our athletics coaches,” says Athletics Organiser at Stellenberg High School, Telanie de Klerk. “He is skilled in almost every aspect of athletics and he is in charge of our sprinters, hurdlers and long jump athletes. JT Potgieter takes care of our shot-put athletes and Heinrich Kühn, a former Stellies MTBS-star, coaches our high jumpers. The relay teams are coached by teachers from our school.” With a few records threatened to be broken, De Klerk is especially excited to see a few of them being reset come February, and specifically one by last year’s top athlete, Stellenberg High learner Juli Vercuiel. “I’m looking forward to seeing some records broken this year, such as Juli Vercuiel in the 400m hurdles, Jesse Herborn in the 400m, Tegan Abrahams in the 100m and 200m, Gabbi Lazarus in the 100m hurdles and Jean-Jacques van Schalkwyk in the 400m hurdles.” Athletes have to juggle a tough training regimen and have to maintain good grades in order to tick the right boxes – it is after all the academics that should get preference. However, De Klerk feels that one can strike the right balance, which ties in with the school’s motto, Vivat Scientia, freely translated to ‘Let knowledge live’. “Athletes need to be self-disciplined and have a balanced lifestyle. A good support system is also very important. It is really difficult balancing academics and sport, especially with the winter sport training programmes starting so early. I think it is important to find balance and to prioritise.” Despite the tough schedule that preparing for the MTBS has on learners, De Klerk feels that sport needs to form an integral part of a student’s life. “I would say ‘Go for it!’ There is nothing like being an athlete to challenge yourself and to prepare you for other sporting codes. It teaches discipline and teamwork as well. Start small if you have to, but try,” she advises. DF Malan are the only other school, besides Stellenberg, to have won both golds in the two respective sections. It is, however, the hosts that have bragging rights on the latest two – in 2013 & 2014 – double golds. This confidence, and having won the last five athletic champions, will most certainly fuel the fire of every Stellies scholar in the pavillion and on both track and field.
