EMO ADAMS Emo Adams was only 9 years old when he stole the hearts of the audience members in David Kramer and Taliep Petersen’s musical, District 6. In 2007 Emo released his first CD, “Tall, Dark & Afrikaans”. Ever since he has been on the go entertaining audiences at big festivals and shows all over South Africa, TV series and his chat show, Jou show met Emo, which is one of kykNET’s most popular shows. AWSUM asked him a few questions about fatherhood and his plans for 2018. What were the highs and lows of your school career? Meeting Nelson Mandela at our school. I sang an anthem to him which was known as the unofficial anthem back then. I did not know the words so I had to sing it off a page. There weren’t many lows during school. The only low was on my first day of Standard 6 (Grade 8) when the police raided our school. I would say that was my low. Any stories your old high school teacher would tell us? I really don’t know what my teachers would say, because I wasn’t loud. I was a quiet, and average student and did not even make jokes or anything. March last year, you became a dad for the second time. What do you enjoy about fatherhood? I think everything. I have been an entertainer my whole life so fatherhood is very new to me and you learn something every day. It’s not like entertainment – you present something different, add a few lights and then it’s a new show, but with kids you learn something every day. The whole experience is what’s amazing to me. Rehearsal, shows, teething, nappies, what’s your recipe to keep all the balls in the air? If someone knows the concept of that recipe I would pay that person. Everyone’s life is different, so you try to fit everything you can into one day. The best I can do is to give 100% at work and 100% when I am home. That is like the best case scenario.

What do you do to relax? I don’t really relax, but if I do it’s with the family. Our family made a pact that every Sunday we will take a break from everything and spend time together. That was kind off our new year’s resolution and has worked well for us so far. Luckily my wife is taking me to Thailand for my birthday so that will be a nice vacation. Who is your biggest motivator/cheerleader? There are a few people, but my biggest cheerleader would be my wife. She supports me with everything that I do even if she thinks I’m taking on too much work or I need to take it slow. And then my manager Olivia Gildenhuys. She is the second one that will always motivate me to reach higher grounds and shoot for the stars. Also my friends, the group JAG, my parents and, like everyone, I have a lot of good people in my corner that always motivates me. You worked with a few big names in the industry, namely David Kramer and Taliep Petersen. Any life lessons you learnt from these icons that you want to share with the readers? You really do learn something from everybody and obviously the longest time of my career was with Taliep Petersen and David Kramer, but you learn so much of all the people. You steal with your eyes and learn, make mistakes and you try to improve. Even with my director Basil Appolis, we worked together for years and I know exactly what he wants. He inspires me to write my own scripts and to start producing and directing. There are quite a few people that inspire me, but I think for me, I would say the community of Mitchell’s Plain, because if you look at their

lifestyle you get inspired to try better. You can see that all of them try to do better in life and it gives me the courage to try harder. You and your wife, Michelle Gildenhuys is the perfect image of the new South Africa and that love conquers all. Any advice? She is a very good activist and example for what our country should be. I wouldn’t say it’s a new South Africa, you can only be “new” so many times but we must try to change the mentality of people or what they are used to. They say you can’t learn an old dog new tricks but you can teach the new people. That’s the reason why she does motivational talks at schools. The youth is the people you need to help and who can make a difference. She is definitely a great advocate for what this country should be. What’s on the horizon for 2018? The Emo 30 show for kykNET and my 40th birthday. It’s cool to know that you have been in the industry for so long and also relevant for so long. I know there were many before me and there would be many after me, but I have seen a lot of people come and go and you never hear from them again. Any funny memes that you saw lately? I don’t know, the last one a read was don’t be so ‘judgerag’…it is a word for when you judge people. What is you favourite hashtag? #awkard

Tortilla de Espinacas
(Spinach omelette – Spanish style) This Colombia n recipe is adapted to a Spanish-style tortilla and makes a lovely light lunch when served with a crisp side salad and avocado slices
Ingredients Serves: 2-3 • • • • • • • •
1 medium-sized onion 200 g potatoes 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 200 g fresh spinach, thoroughly washed 5 large eggs 1 fresh medium-heat chilli, finely chopped Pinch of snipped fresh chives to garnish
Preparation 1. Cut the onion in half and then thinly slice into half-moons. 2. Peel the potatoes and slice into thin rounds, thoroughly drying in a cloth thereafter. 3. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan of approximately 20 cm in diameter until very hot, then add the potatoes and onion and toss until well coated with the oil.
4. Season to taste and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cook, covered, for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft (they should not brown), shaking the pan every so often. 5. In a saucepan, lightly steam the spinach. Once cooked, squeeze out all the liquid (it is very important to get all the liquid out) and chop finely. Set aside until needed. 6. Lightly beat the eggs and season with salt and pepper. 7. When the onion and potatoes are cooked, raise the heat to medium, thoroughly mix in the spinach and chilli before adding the egg mixture to the pan. 8. Reduce to low heat and cook for 20 minutes, uncovered. 9. Every so often, run a palette knife around the edges of the omelette to prevent it sticking. 10. When there is no liquid left on top of the omelette, turn it over with the help of a large plate and cook for 2 minutes more (it should remain moist in the middle). 11. Sprinkle with fresh chives before serving.

The theme this year was ‘Escape to Anywhere’ because when you can read, your imagination can take you to so many places through reading books. The boys boarded their travel machines for adventures into fantastic, magical lands. There were also some wonderful puppet shows and plays as well as a variety of educational activities. One of the highlights of the week was dress up day. The boys dressed up as characters from Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. Dr Seuss was a major theme and boys, teachers and teacher interns dressed up as a variety of crazy and imaginative characters!
ST PETER’S GIRLS PREP SCHOOL (t) 011 367 6631 (e) girlsreception@stpeters.co.za The Junior Prep’s ‘Day of exploration’ The St Peter’s JP Department held a ‘Day of Exploration’ on Thursday, 29 March. This awareness that play matters, is not new. However, with the increasing pressure on schools to educate for a growing technological and ever-changing world, as well as the need to develop 21st century skills, the concept of play has been seen as a luxury that children don’t have time for. Play’s positive contribution to learning is not a new realisation, but at St Peter’s we have become
increasingly aware of the impact of play on learning. A day of ‘exploring and creating’ was planned and the teachers set about collecting boxes and recyclables in order to facilitate the day. Glue, tape, string, pegs and other materials were ordered. The children were given projects, relating to the learning, which had taken place in class recently. The girls sprang into action and the projects, scaffolded through the grades, created an energy and
concentration, which was so focused that the girls barely stopped working and building all day. They had to be encouraged to break for snacks and lunch and did not seem to need any playtime. There was attention to detail and the learning was unmeasurable. During our Day of Innovation we, as a school, attempted to make the importance of ‘learning through play’ more understood as well as bringing the concepts of passion and work closer together!

The school community collected over 620 pairs of shoes and displayed high qualities of servant leadership through the washing of the feet and coming to school without shoes for a day. “The Eco-Pets and Grade 10s would like to thank the school for their active participation in the Barefoot Day. It was both a fun and a challenging experience being barefoot for the day. The initiative was a huge success and we are grateful for the generosity of the school community. These shoes will be taken on the Grade 10 camp and distributed to the community that will be hosting our Community Service in the Drakensberg. “Play It Forward Jozi” Four very enthusiastic and sports-passionate Grade 6 boys from Bryanston Primary School have started up a charity, donating used sports equipment to children less fortunate than themselves. These boys – who live and breathe sport – also have social consciences, and realise that others should be given the same opportunities they have been given to take part in the sports they love and to have the necessary kit. Michael Adamson, Aazan Khan, Cameron O’Neill and Ross Garrett would like everyone to be a part of their initiative “Play It Forward Jozi”, by donating all any old or no-longer-used bats, balls, hockey sticks, tennis racquets, soccer and rugby boots to them so they can pass them on to underprivileged individuals, schools and sports clubs in the Johannesburg area. Any kind of sporting equipment that is no longer being used would be greatly appreciated. “Play It Forward Jozi”, in association with Bryanston Primary School, needs your help. CRAIGHALL PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 011 788 7223/4 (e) gazette@craighallprimary.co.za Cross-Country Our annual Cross Country, held on Friday 13 April, saw our school represent pride, spirit, teamwork, effort, resilience and enthusiasm. Each house excelled with their team spirit and it was an extremely difficult choice but in the end, Kudu walked away with the Spirit Trophy. What gave even greater credence to the decision was the fact that, when one of their runners, who only got to the podium after the prize-giving due to his receiving medical attention, the entire house stood up and applauded and gave him an extra accolade. This is what we have worked for over the years – to develop intrinsic kindness, manners and spirit. Well done! All the children ran their hearts out and gave their all.
