Chad le Clos South Africa’s most decorated Olympic medallist, Chad le Clos, recently smashed his own 100m butterfly record for the second time. This born-and-bred Durbanite also recently moved to Cape Town, where he is establishing the Chad le Clos Swimming Academy. Q The 100m butterfly saw you tie for silver with Phelps and László Cseh. You had a good laugh on the podium – what was that about? A The 100m fly silver was great – to be in a three-way tie and stand alongside Phelps and Cseh on the podium was an amazing feeling. When we stepped up to the podium, I suggested we hold hands for a picture, but there was quite delay, so we held hands for quite a while and I joked to Phelps that Nicole (Phelps’ wife) was going to start getting jealous, hence the laughing. Q How did Rio compare to London? What are you taking to Tokyo? A I went into the 2016 Rio Olympic Games with a lot more pressure on myself than the 2012 London ones when I was a reasonably unknown swimmer on the international circuit. In 2016 the expectations were higher, but the competition and the challenge of very talented swimmers was far higher and made it even more exciting. Of course, I didn’t quite get the result I was looking for, missing out on a medal in the 200m fly – but I’ve bounced back from this and already have my sights set on this event at the next Olympics in Tokyo! Q What do you do in the moments just before the gun sounds and you have to dive into the pool? Q You have said before that Cape Town was your favourite city. You now live in Cape Town. Are you living the dream? A I am so happy to live in Cape Town. It is an unbelievable change from Durban, although it was hard to leave my family behind. I love seeing the ocean and the majestic sunsets from my apartment in Sea Point. I’ve been wanting to move to Cape Town for long time, but the Olympics delayed things a bit. There are great training facilities around here. Q You are establishing an elite swimming academy at Jan van Riebeeck High School in Cape Town, in the slopes of Table Mountain. How did that come about? A I finally have the opportunity to create something that I always wanted. This will be a legacy for my family name and help youngsters come through. It would be so amazing if in 10 or 20 years’ time, someone would say ‘Chad helped me reach the Olympics’, or ‘Chad helped me reach a goal’. This is my biggest inspiration in creating this academy.
Q What has happened for you since the last Olympics, when you did not clinch gold again?
A My focus becomes razor sharp, starting in the call room. I prepare myself for war. Q What do you eat on race day? A Nothing particular – usually some pasta and protein. It depends on what I feel like, so I might eat a bit of everything. Q Tell us a bit about your family and friends. A My parents are Bert and Geraldine le Clos. We are a very tight-knit family. My brother lives with me in my apartment in Sea Point. I have a small circle of close friends. I love to play poker with my friends! My dad is actually a bigger star than I am, after the London Olympics where his response to my win went ‘viral’, in his own words! My team of close-knit family and friends are vital to my success. I truly could not have done it without them. Q Of which celebrities are you a fan? A Sporting-wise, Cristiano Ronaldo – I’m a big fan of his. Celebrity-wise, Phoebe Tonkin of The Vampire Diaries. Q What message do you have for our readers?
A Well, I was obviously disappointed to not win gold at the Rio Olympics, but champs have to respond. The next four years are more important than the past four years, and I am by no means easing off. I now have a great platform from which to bounce back and win gold in Tokyo in 2020.

Smokey Lentil Cottage Pie Serves 6
INGREDIENTS • 2 large butternuts to roast • 2 large aubergines • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 red onions, chopped • ½ cup Milk Stout • 1 tsp ground coriander • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 2 celery stalks, sliced • 1 bay leaf • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 2 carrots, cubed • 200g brown lentils • 350g mushrooms (of your

choice), cubed • 350ml mushroom stock (you can also use vegetable or beef) • ½ tsp ground cinnamon and some for sprinkling • 2 tbsp sesame seed oil (you can also use olive oil) • 1 tsp sea salt • 1 tsp ground black pepper. • ¼ cup honey and 100ml for butternut • butternut seeds, saved from the roasted butternut

Love them or hate them, these legumes are here to stay. They have been part of the human diet since aceramic Neolithic times, being one of the first crops domesticated in the Near East and archaeological evidence shows they were eaten 9 500 to 13 000 years ago. Lentil colours range from yellow to red-orange to green, brown and black. They also vary in size, and are sold in many forms, with or without the skins, whole or split. Now you get red and brown Beluga, said to resemble Beluga caviar. Then there is the brown/Spanish pardina and the French green Puy lentils, which I adore. These are just a few that are available. These babies have great nutritional properties like carbohydrates, sugar, dietary fibre, fat, protein, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, vitamin C, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and lots more – if that is not a good reason to eat them, then I don’t know. I am crazy about the earthy, nutty flavour of this tiny legume. Eating lentils can help to reduce blood cholesterol since they contains high levels of soluble fibre and they are low in fat, so this makes for one happy heart. There are so many ways that one can use them to cook with – they make wonderful salads and savoury dishes, they can be added to meat dishes, or just used as a vegetarian meal. I tried this Smokey Lentil Cottage Pie from J’Something and I liked it!!! METHOD • Pre-heat oven to 180 °C. • Roast the butternut until the skin is charred and the insides are soft. Allow to cool. • Char the aubergine on an open gas flame (or under the grill) to give it a distinct smoky flavour, turning regularly. • Remove aubergine from heat when done and allow to cool. Once the aubergine is cool, cut into cubes and sprinkle with salt. • Leave for 20 minutes allowing the salt to draw out the bitter liquid. In a colander, rinse off the salt and set aside. • In a large oiled pan add the bay leaf, coriander, garlic, onion, celery and carrots and fry for 5 minutes. • Add the cubed aubergine and mushrooms and slowly add the Milk Stout as you stir. • Add the tomato purée, stock, honey and lentils and season to taste.
• Simmer until lentils are cooked, but still have a bite. If you allow it to get too soft, it goes soupy. It takes about 30 minutes. • Meanwhile, remove the butternut seeds from the cooled butternut and sprinkle with cinnamon and honey and set aside. • Mash up the butternut and add sesame seed oil or olive oil. Add cinnamon and season to taste. • Spoon the lentils into a baking dish, leaving the excess liquid behind in the pot, if necessary. • Top the lentils with the mashed butternut and sprinkle with butternut seeds. • Place in the middle of the oven and bake for 30 minutes. • Finish off by grilling the top until lightly crispy and golden. © Jenny Morris All rights reserved 2017

Laerskool Hendrik Louw se Junior A-span speel in die openingswedstryd, met ons seniors wat om 10:00 teen Worcester Primêr sal opdraf.
Die geleentheid lok vreeslik baie belangstelling en alle aanduidings is dat dit in die jare wat kom net van sterkte tot sterkte sal groei. Die hoof van Laerskool Hendrik Louw, mnr. John Reyneke, sal alle deelnemende skole se hoofde in die klubhuis ontvang en Izak Davel sal ook na elke wedstryd onderhoude met spelers en afrigters voer. Laerskool Hendrik Louw se deelnemende spanne is vir die huidige seisoen nog onoorwonne en die skool is baie trots op die feit dat ons skool as gasheerskool vir die Westelike Provinsie uitklopfase gekeur is.

Skaak De Hoop-leerders presteer baie goed in skaak en al drie ouderdomsgroepe gaan na die Top Schools-uitspeelrondes. Baie sterkte aan julle!
Die Graad 6-leerders het kulturele danse opgevoer.
De Hoop teen Mikro Op 5 en 6 Mei het al ons hokkie-, netbal- en rugbyspanne uitgedraf teen Mikro! Dit was opwindend en senutergend! Almal het baie goed gespeel en De Hoop se naam hoog gehou.
Hawaii word hier verteenwoordig.
Jersey Drive The senior learners of De Hoop Primary lead the entire school with a Jersey Drive project in support of the longstanding Helderberg Rotary Anns Jersey Drive. All the warm second-hand clothes, jerseys and blankets our children brought to school were donated to various projects within the Helderberg basin. Thank you to everyone who made an effort to share some love and warmth!

Akwarium HS Strand se twee jong bioloë, Kyle Burns en Christopher Blair Hooke, gaan van krag tot krag. Kyle het ‘n toekenning vir uitmuntende diens ontvang. Hy het die skool se naam hoog gehou tydens die prysuitdeling, waar hy ‘n puik toespraak gelewer het. Kyle, baie geluk met jou diamantstatus-toekenning! Christopher het reeds verlede jaar sy diamantstatus-toekenning ontvang, maar daar is steeds geen einde aan sy ywer nie. Hy het op dieselfde geleentheid as Kyle ‘n duikkursus gewen by die akwarium as gevolg van sy ongelooflike toewyding van 506 ure vrywillige diens. Geniet elke oomblik as jy in daardie groot tenk duik. Ons is trots op hierdie twee Arende ... knap gedaan!
Jodi Cronje het op 12 Mei as trotse lid van die Boland-span aan ‘n interprovinsiale karatekampioenskap by die Sportskool in Kuilsrivier deelgeneem.

Vyf rugbyspelers het die afgelope tyd aan kursusse deelgeneem wat deur die WP Rugby-unie aangebied is en die eerste treë gegee om hulle as grens- en lynregters op die rugbyveld te bekwaam.

1ste en 2de plekke vir PV by nasionale toneelspel-kompetisie bestaan het uit die voordra van gedigte, die voer van monoloë, ‘n radiodramawerkswinkel en -oudisie, ‘n televisiesepie-oudisie (Suidooster) en ‘n oudisie vir Woordfees 2018. Thalia Alberts en Stefan le Roux is nie ingesluit in die Top 31 finalistegroep nie, maar Stefan is gevra om later aan ‘n oudisie vir ‘n Woordfeesproduksie deel te neem. Die finale toets aan die agt oorblywende finaliste was om hul eie temaprogram (met al die materiaal wat hul gedurende die kompetisie geskep het) kreatief saam te voeg. Mia en Jordyn het geblom tydens dié rondte en hul talent en passie vir drama was tasbaar op die verhoog! Behalwe vir die prysgeld en kroontitel as 1ste- en 2de-plekwenners in die land, is Jordyn ‘n rol aangebied in ‘n Woordfeesproduksie en Mia het ‘n rol losgeslaan in die sepie Suidooster.

By Parel Vallei loop die drama altyd hoog en die afgelope maand was dit weer die geval tydens die Nasionale Toneelspel-kompetisie vir hoërskoolleerders, geborg deur kykNET. Mia van der Merwe (Graad 10) het nasionaal eerste geëindig en Jordyn Linklater in Graad 12 tweede! PV se Dramadepartement is besonder trots op dié prestasie dat Parel Valleiers weer plek(ke) in die Top 3 beklee, as daar in ag geneem word dat 500 leerders ingeskryf het vir dié landwye kompetisie. Uit die inskrywings het 60 kandidate deurgedring na die driedagoudisies wat plaasgevind het vanaf 11 tot 13 Mei in die Kunstekaapteater. Die Parel Valleiers wat deelgeneem en deurgedring het na die Top 60 was: Thalia Alberts, Stefan le Roux, Jordyn Linklater en Mia van der Merwe. Swem Abigail Calitz (Graad 9) het in Maart vanjaar aan die Swem Vlak 3-kampioenskappe in Port Elizabeth deelgeneem en uitstekend gevaar. Sy neem aan agt items deel en wen in sewe hiervan medaljes: twee goud, twee silwer en drie brons. Sy het onlangs uitgevind dat sy vir die SA’s gekwalifiseer het wat in Augustus plaasvind. Alhoewel sy vir die 200m Borsslag derde in die uitdunrondtes kom, word sy ongelukkig in die finaal gediskwalifiseer. ATKV Redenaarskompetisie Tydens die ATKV Redenaarskompetisie se semi-finaal het Annerine Strauss en Cimòn van der Westhuizen (albei Graad 9), puik gepraat. Annerine behaal ’n eerste plek in die juniorafdeling vir voorbereide toesprake, terwyl Cimòn ’n derde plek in die afdeling vir onvoorbereide toesprake inpalm. Hulle sal altwee later vanjaar aan die finale rondte teen die beste sprekers van regoor Suid-Afria deelneem.

Die HMS Bloemhof Junior Landloopspan loop tans met 119 punte voor in die landloop skoleliga se juniorafdeling. HMS La Rochelle, wat in die seniorafdeling 1ste is, is met 72 punte in die tweede plek onder die juniors. By die afgelope byeenkoms, wat op 31 Mei 2017 by Bridge House College in Franschhoek gehou is, het die ses Bloemhoffers onder die eerste sewe geëindig. Ilse Brugman hardloop die 4km binne ’n tyd van 16:58 om eerste te eindig en die dogterswedloop te wen.

Peanut butter and jam Legacy (a non-profit organisation) is incredibly grateful for the Rhenish donations. Cycling program
Kearsney Tennis Festival Die eerste tennisspan van Paul Roos Gimnasium het deelgeneem aan die 22ste Kearsney Tennis Festival in Kwazulu-Natal. Paul Roos het in die finaal teen Grey College van Bloemfontein gespeel en die wedstryd naelskraap met 3-5 verloor. Agt skole van regoor Suid- Afrika het aan die Festival deelgeneem. Die skole was opgedeel in twee groepe, naamlik die Rafa-groep en die Novak-groep. Die skole het in die onderskeie groepe teen mekaar gespeel en dan oorkruis gespeel vir ‘n plek in die finaal. Nadat PRG 1ste in hul groep geëindig het, het hulle teen Affies in die semi-finaal gespeel. Daarna het hulle teen Grey in die finaal gespeel, wat op hul beurt weer met Selborne College afgereken het. Die finaal tussen Paul Roos en Grey het kwaliteittennis opgelewer. Na die 6 enkelspelwedstryde was die telling 3 elk. Ongelukkig kon die PRG nie die dubbelspelwedstryde wen nie, en het hulle die finaal met 3-5 verloor.

Paul Roos Gymnasium and BMT bike shop were approached by Aitsa (who started a cycling program in Kylemore). Aitsa reward the learners every Friday with an hour’s worth of bicycle riding for attending school throughout the week. This has been the third time the PRG lads have been to Kylemore to add value to this worthwhile project.
