For 19 years Ruda Landman was part of South Africans’ Sunday evenings as a co-presenter on Carte Blanche. She left the show in 2007, and since then Ruda presented ‘n Lewe met and VeranderDinge on kykNET and is one of South Africa’s best-known journalist and television personalities. It was a great honour for AWSUM to do this interview with her. Ruda, you grew up in the Northern Cape, Upington to be exact, please tell us about your school career. What school did you attend? Any achievements or great memories? I grew up in small towns all over the Northern Cape – Hartswater, then Keimoes, and boarding school in Upington for my high school years. It shaped who I am. Both your parents were school teachers, as a teenager how did you find that? By the time I got to high school they were no longer actively teaching – my dad had moved on to be an inspector of schools, and my mum stopped teaching. But I learnt what any teachers want to instil: discipline, punctuality, and doing your homework! What did you do after school? How did you end up as a presenter? I studied Afrikaans and English at Stellenbosch University, and did a teaching diploma, but decided I did not want to teach. So I got a job at Die Burger in Cape Town, and later at the Afrikaanse Diens at SABC radio, now RSG. Management at the TV news department were looking for women to read the news in Afrikaans, and I was among three or four who started doing that. It’s a well-known fact that when you started your career you could not speak English & had a very bad Afrikaans accent. Did you ever wish that you could go back to high school and do things differently? I wouldn’t know how – my world was Afrikaans. That’s who I am. When it became necessary, I could and did learn to speak English. As a young conservative Afrikaans lady in the 80’s, the boundary-pushing TV show Carte Blanche was an eye opener for you. Do you have one story/ experience that will stay with you? I can’t narrow it down to one story. We got to know the country in close-up during the transition years of the late 80s and early 90s. It was an amazing personal and professional journey. Your family is the most important thing in your life. Any advice on how to be a big career woman and a great mom and wife? Choose the right partner, and pay attention to the relationship. Find and appreciate other help, in my case Rosie Mgangathe who has been housekeeper, nanny and organiser of our lives since 1981. A lot of our readers invited you into our homes on a Sunday evening on Carte Blanche. What does a normal Sunday look like in the Landman household? The best part of leaving CB was having my Sundays to myself! We might go for a walk or a late breakfast in the morning, and then sit on our stoep, braai, have some good red wine, read, perhaps watch a cop series.

Do you like cooking and what is your speciality? My husband loves to braai. I have developed a whole catalogue of delicious salads to go with that. Otherwise, I make a mean curry. Please explain to our readers what Study Trust is all about and how GRAD: Your Guide to University Success is helping students. This year, South Africa has about 150,000 first-year students at university. Around 60% of them are first-generation, the first in their family to go to university. They have no one to turn to when things get rough, no one to say, “Don’t worry, I’ve walked the road, it will get better. Hang in there.” They need skills like handling money, managing time, mastering huge amounts of information, handling stress. StudyTrust has been administering bursaries for more than 40 years, and they have a support system for the students which includes seminars on all these subjects. I adapted that content, Van Schaik Publishers turned it into a lovely, vibrant booklet (pro bono), and Capitec sponsored printing and distribution of 140,000 copies which were delivered to 22 universities in January. “Tell me your story” is your latest book that was launched in April. What inspired you to write this book? About three years ago, insurance company BrightRock approached me to interview a range of South Africans for their website, The Change Exchange (www.changeexchange.co.za). The idea was to talk about change moments in life – how do you make decisions, or how do you handle change when it is forced upon you. From that flowed the kykNET programme VeranderDinge, for which I did similar interviews. It was wonderful – people shared insight and life lessons and personal emotion, far beyond what I had expected. I wanted to find a wider audience for that, so I selected 18 of the interviews and put it into a book. Why do you think it’s important to hear everyone’s story? Our experience of our reality in this country is so diverse that we can very easily retreat into separate enclaves and start talking about “they” and “them”. That breaks up society and disables our growth and development. How will we understand one another if we don’t listen to the stories? You interviewed really big names, how do you prepare for an interview and any specific interviews that changed your life? You have to find out as much as you can about the person so that the conversation can be about his or her experience, emotion, interpretation, response, not about the facts. The facts are just the washing line to hang the real content on. Again, I can’t single out specific interviews. The experience of talking to such a wide range of South Africans has shifted and shaped my view of our reality. What is next for Ruda Landman? I’m not a planner. A door opens and I consider the possibilities. We’ll have to see!

Goats Cheese is becoming more and more popular these days, and for people with lactose intolerances there is hope. Goat Milk has many benefits, not only is it easier to digest it is highly nutritious. If you look at the differences between cows and goats milk you will see that while the fat content of cow and goat milk are similar, the fat globules in goat milk are much smaller, this makes it a lot easier for your body to digest, only about 2 percent of goat milk is curd, compared to about 10 percent in cow milk — helping your body digest it with less irritation than cow milk. Goat’s milk is high in calcium and fatty acids but low in cholesterol a protein-wise, and I’m told the closest milk to human breast milk. It is said that Goat milk helps increase “good” cholesterol levels while reducing the bad ones. They say it has got healing properties similar to olive oil and is recommended for keeping high cholesterol in check. Goat milk also has high levels of vitamin A, which can improve your complexion, fight acne and improve overall skin health. Now besides drinking it I think I prefer eating it, and there are so many wonderful goat cheese varieties available today thanks to Fairview and the passion of Charles Back. It is produced in the traditional French method, with a dash of our goats’ milk to give farmhouse flavour and characteristics.
Kidding About!! How do you tell a ripe Brie or Camembert from one that’s under- or overripe? When choosing a Brie or Camembert cheese that is ready to eat there are a few pointers. A pristinely white rind and cheese that feels solid to the touch is still un-ripe and won’t be nearly as tasty as a ripe cheese with a soft, bulging centre that just flows. One also has to take care that the cheese is not over ripe and paste its time, it should not smell of ammonia, so feel and smell before you buy.

Cambridge High School’s Kamvelihle Cultural Society’ visit to Jiba Day Care Centre The Kamvelihle Society at Cambridge High School has as its aim the improvement of people’s living conditions. This year the Society decided to support Jiba Day Care. A very successful Cultural evening was held in March and the proceeds from this evening were then used to purchase some items the Day Care needed which included a stove, microwave oven, tables and chairs, a heater and blankets which were handed over on 9 May. The children also received some drinks, sweets and chips. The children then responded in appreciation by singing a song. Cambridge High School is very proud of Miss Peter and her Board who carried out the true spirit of a Cantabridgian, Non Vobis (not for ourselves).

Hockey Vs Kingswood College
Clarendon’s Top 7 players, as well as four u15 girls, travelled to Bloemfontein to participate in the Amanda Coetzer Tennis Tournament hosted by Oranje Meisieskool. This tournament is by invitation only and it is reserved for the strongest eight girl’s teams in South Africa. We started our campaign on Thursday morning by playing Bloemhof, last year’s winners, and Paarl Gym in the afternoon. Despite solid play we were beaten 9 - 0 by Bloemhof and then narrowly lost 5 – 4 in matches to Paarl Gym. On Friday morning we lost 6 – 3 in matches to Waterkloof in the last of our round robin matches, and as a result we played Affies in our first crossover match. This match was played in fine spirit but the girls from Pretoria managed to secure victory. This result saw us playing Stellenbosch for 7th and 8th place. We began this match with great energy but rain spoiled the party and forced us from the courts. Thankfully we were ahead in both singles and doubles when the match was abandoned and we finished the tournament in seventh place. Our u15 team was also in a similar position as they lost their first four matches, however they were in complete control of their match when the rain came down and they too finished in 7th place. Special mention must be made of Leah Jonas for ending the tournament as the best Number 7 player in the 1st Team section, as she won all the singles matches she played. Teena Greyling was nominated for the Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row in the 1st Team draw, and Leila Greyling won the Sportsmanship Award in the u15 competition.

HUDSON PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL EC Biathle and Triathle Champs Hudson Park Primary had 19 athletes taking part in the EC Biathle and Triathle Champs. We are especially proud of Zac Smith, Stephen Tinhof, Caylin Saunders, Kara Batting, Sarah-Jane Mouton, Luke Tinhof, Isabella Stanyon, Sophia Burgess, Bradley Saunders and Samantha Mouton, who have all been selected to represent EC at the SA Biathle Champs in June. Zac Smith and Luke Tinhof will also be representing EC at the SA Triathle Champs. Five of the athletes achieved podium finishes in their respective events.

Kingswood ready to take on Stirling Kingswood College takes on Stirling in this year’s traditional fixture on 26 May. This rivalry between these two Eastern Capes schools is an old favourite in the area and spirits are high and the excitement is mounting. So far, Kingswood is having a great season, Kingswood’s Head of Rugby Jonny Mallet said: “The rugby season has gone well so far, and our focus has been on improving our game each week and trying to not think about the results too much, but to rather focus more on the process. This has meant that we have been able to take valuable lessons from our encounters on the field in order to improve our play”. In 2017, Kingswood were beaten by Stirling but they look forward to playing this fixture against Stirling
this weekend. Mallett went on to say: “This fixture is very important for our school as both Stirling and Kingswood are co-ed schools which means we can play competitively in a number of sporting disciplines”. Fixtures against different schools provide a platform for players to test their skills and technique, and indeed to improve on them. “We always aim to keep improving our players to play to their full potential, whilst simultaneously reminding them to enjoy playing the game”, Mallett said. This weekend is sure to be full of exciting matches and there will be a great sense of camaraderie shown between these two schools on and off the field!

A night to remember “Morocco” was the theme for the 2018 Beaconhurst Matric Farewell. With its rich colours and phenomenal décor, it couldn’t have been more perfect. The Matrics arrived at “The Summit Lifestyle and Event Centre”, where the farewell was held, and brought traffic to a standstill, literally. As they slowly trickled in, we completely understood why… they were dressed to the nines and ready for an unforgettable night of delicious food and crazy dance moves. From the starter, right through to desert, chatter and laughter filled the halls of the venue and as suspected, there were no dull moments. Mrs Van Greunen was heard saying, “At some point, we thought we’d need to open the dance floor soon, or they would open it themselves. That’s how excited they were.” After the opening of the dance floor, the real party got started. Mrs Potgieter and Miss Hudson, the teachers who organised the farewell, are truly a force to be reckoned with. It was their first time planning a Matric Farewell and they surpassed all expectations. We can’t wait to see what they do next year.
Jersey Week A few of the Beaconhurst Early Act Board members joined Mrs van der Watt in taking all the warm clothes collected during Jersey Week to the Cambridge Catholic Centre. While there they were shown around the operation by Mrs Lynn Grenfell of the Rotary Club. She explained the sorting process and where all the warm clothes would be distributed. A big thank you to those who donated towards this worthy cause.
A Night behind the Mask Weeks of preparation, heated discussions, and arguments about the elements of the 2018 Beaconhurst Supporters Ball produced an extremely successful supporter’s ball. The Grade 10’s worked hard on raising capital by hosting a wellsupported car wash at break for the teachers’ cars. Set up took what felt like forever, but decor on a budget produced an absolutely stunningly decorated venue. The evening was filled with fun, dancing, laughter... and slap chips. The dance was very well supported, and from what I could see, it was enjoyed by everyone who attended. The Grade 10s were so thrilled to hear of their major profit, that it made the dreaded clean up after the dance all worth the while.
Crazy Hat Civvies Beaconhurst Primary donned crazy hats for a special civvies day recently, proceeds of which went to the Carel du Toit Centre: ‘Where deaf children learn to speak’.
