on his brand-new album, being in school and his career

With his debut album, Trading Change, he changed the music scene in 2014. This album gained gold status in South Africa, was crowned Album of the Year by iTunes SA and won multiple awards including MTV Africa Music Award for Best Pop & Alternative in 2015. Fast forward 4 years of awards, number one on all South African radio stations, touring with his inspirational modern folk music all around the world headlining festivals all over Europe, sold out shows in the US and now Jeremy Loops just launched his new album, Critical as Water. Before heading on his world tour, AWSUM had a chat with Jeremy.

We must start off by asking where were you in primary and high school? I went to Kommetjie Primary School. The local school in the village where I grew up. And then for High School, I was at SACS for a bit, before heading off to Reddam. Tell us about your inspirational music career, where and how did it start? I’ve always been artistically inclined, but I’m also deeply rational, and I realised early that the risk profile of majoring in something art-based was much higher than other industries. In university, I did a finance and property degree, but financial maths wasn’t interesting to me the way that art and music was. So I escaped to my guitar every chance I got. That slowly snowballed into where I am today. That’s not to say I wasn’t deliberate in deciding to really go for it, but rather that the start came from a place of escapism and passion, and just pursuing the avenues I felt were worth pursuing led me here. Congratulations on the launch of your new album. One of the singles, ‘Waves’, has garnered over 1 million streams since its release. Each project has its own obstacles. For every zig, there is a zag. Where there many when creating this album? I really struggled to get up to speed when I began writing this album. It took roughly a year to begin producing decent songs, and then another six months on top of that to begin producing good songs. I think a combination of fear and the pressure of expectation weighed heavily on me. I trusted myself, and slowly we began cobbling together something I feel is exceptional. The other major obstacle was managing cash flow, like any business. I’m completely independent and this album is entirely self-funded, and there’s huge financial exposure on something of this undertaking - hence why record labels continue to do well - but I’m happy with the decision to go about it this way.

AWSUM NEWS MARCH 2018

You are the co-founder of Greenpop, please explain to our readers what Greenpop is about and the good work that you do. Greenpop is a tree-planting organisation that plants trees in under-green and underprivileged communities throughout Southern Africa. To date, we’ve planted more than 85,000 trees. While the overt aim is environmentalism and environmental education - hence the tree-planting - we also use it as a tool to bring communities together and uplift society. Greenpop is one of the things in my life I’m most proud of, and to quite literally watch trees you planted bear fruit and feed communities and improve people’s lives is rewarding in a way that’s quite difficult to explain. You are a Kommetjie Boytjie, do you enjoy going back to your hometown? Our family home is still there, so I’m home all the time. Many of my childhood friends still live out there, and those are relationships that are important to me. Our local surf break is also one of my favourites, so I have lots of reasons to go home to Kommetjie. It’s important to know and to embrace where you come from. After all the success and multiple awards, how do you keep your feet on the ground? By doing just that. Keeping your feet on the ground. I’m not distracted by material things and my goals and my family keep me motivated, so it makes it easier to keep sight of what got me here and to understand that the same philosophy will propel us forward. Okay, so we know you surf and like to plant trees but what do you do to relax? Spending time with my family, our dog Maya and being in the great outdoors as much as possible. Writing songs, when there is no deadline or pressure to deliver a new album, is another place I look to for relaxing. Your music is very uplifting and joyful, what inspires you to write such great songs? I write as a reaction to the world I’m in. For my first album, Trading Change, I was in a hopeful and

joyous space, so that informed those songs. This song has material that’s much darker, as in songs like Vultures and Underwater Blues, but that’s also a reaction to feeling like the world is a darker place than it’s been in a while. I find that if you’re open to life and to the world, inspiration is there just waiting for you to grab it. You just have to be open to receiving it. What do you see as success? Success is getting to wake up every day doing that which you wish to be doing with your time, whether professionally or personally. Wealth is not success. Acclaim isn’t success. Fame isn’t success. Success is quite literally being the master of your time and being content with how that time is allocated. If you can go back to high school, what would you do differently? Anything you want to tell the 16-year-old Jeremy? I find thinking back is dangerous because it’s to presume that the place you’re in now isn’t a good enough foundation to do the things you wish to do. All our mistakes and successes put us somewhere valuable to make new decisions and to create new opportunities from. So I’d say to 16-year-old Jeremy, ‘do you. We still have time to right the wrongs and to capitalise further on our rights.’ Any advice you can give to our AWSUM fans in school that want to follow a music career? Get the best education you can and study for as long as you can. And please do not make music your primary source of income at the beginning of your career. The less reliant you are on music to make money, the more likely you are to make music you are proud of. Only once your music career feels financially stable or you’ve mitigated as much of the risk as you can then should you jump in full force. You’re young. You have much more time than you realise… but also not that much. So get started! Perfect your instruments and skillsets, study, and live life receptive to learning from everything and everyone. http://jeremyloops.com/ Photo Credit: Taahir Matthews

CANSA Sprayathon 2018

Five Beaconhurst School educators recently took part in the Discovery Surfers Challenge and did their school proud as they crossed the finish line, where some of their learners who volunteered at the event cheered them on.

The annual CANSA Sprayathon was a huge success at Beaconhurst. Learners showed off their multi-coloured hair while raising money to support cancer patients. Thank you to all those who supported the event.

SELBORNE COLLEGE

SGB braai

Games Evening Beaconhurst’s much anticipated Games Evening was held on Friday, 2 March. The school hall was packed, brimming with excitement and hundreds of children. There were plenty of games for all ages, including pillow fighting and sumo wrestling. Learners walked away with pockets bulging with prizes. Delicious boerewors rolls, hotdogs and hamburgers were devoured by hungry customers! The school requested parents to assist us by working shifts at the different games and we were overwhelmed with incredible support and assistance from the parents. Beaconhurst thanks all the parents who assisted, either by offering their time on the evening, or who contributed towards the prizes.

Blue Chip status Our school became the only Eastern Cape school to achieve Blue Chip status for our achievements in cricket over the past year. These highlights included: • Reaching the final of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 competition; • Sinethemba Qeshile was named player of the annual Coke week; and • Jason Niemand and Akhona Mnyaka represented the SA U19 team at the U19 World Cup. The Blue Chip Schools programme is an initiative from Cricket South Africa. It is designed to reward schools committed to providing an environment that will enable young players to exploit their full potential as sports people and to become the best cricketers they can be. Other high schools who have been awarded Blue Chip status include Grey College (Bloemfontein), St Andrew’s High (Bloemfontein), St Stithian’s, St John’s, Jeppe Boys, St Alban’s, Wynberg Boys High School, Northwood, Glenwood and St Charles College.

Gibson Kente Amphitheatre well on its way Hudson Park’s new amphitheatre has been named after the late playwright Gibson Kente who is known as the father of township drama. The theatre will be launched later this year with one of Gibson Kente’s plays called Too Late. The theatre has been the inspiration of Mr Pierre Perold, our Head of Drama who is a respected playwright himself. We, as a school, are thrilled and excited to be able to fully utilise this venue as our Cultural hub in the near future. Pierre Perold and Mzandile Ngoqo (Gibson Kente’s son).

Artists achieve wonderful results

CANSA relay

12 learners from Cambridge Primary had their art work sent to the annual World School Children’s Art Exhibition held in the Republic of China. Cambridge swept the board, with 12 pieces being selected, including 1 Silver Award. This is an impressive achievement as this exhibition receives thousands of entries from around the world. Cambridge were the top achievers in South Africa, well done!

Recently, some of our staff proudly participated in the CANSA relay for life in the hopes of supporting and raising funds for those who have been affected by cancer.

Donations to Choc Cambridge Primary School - Foundation Phase learners opened their hearts and pockets, living the Cambridge motto - Non Vobis ... Not for ourselves. Learners hand over the generous donations by parents and pupils to Choc, for those in need. Our life value “KINDNESS” in action!

Cambridge excels at Merrifield Mile Well done to the following swimmers on their outstanding achievements at the Merrifield Mile. Astrid Pye came 10th overall and was 1st Nipper home in her age group and Bradley Tyson came 17th overall and was 1st Nipper home in his age group.

Hierdie platforms sluit in: • Die AWSUM skole koerant, ‘n maandelikse publikasie in 8 streke landswyd • AWSUM Clashes, spesiale uitgawes vir belangrike sporttoernooie landswyd

AWSUM NEWS MARCH 2018
