EMO ADAMS Emo Adams was only 9 years old when he stole the hearts of the audience members in David Kramer and Taliep Petersen’s musical, District 6. In 2007 Emo released his first CD, “Tall, Dark & Afrikaans”. Ever since he has been on the go entertaining audiences at big festivals and shows all over South Africa, TV series and his chat show, Jou show met Emo, which is one of kykNET’s most popular shows. AWSUM asked him a few questions about fatherhood and his plans for 2018. What were the highs and lows of your school career? Meeting Nelson Mandela at our school. I sang an anthem to him which was known as the unofficial anthem back then. I did not know the words so I had to sing it off a page. There weren’t many lows during school. The only low was on my first day of Standard 6 (Grade 8) when the police raided our school. I would say that was my low. Any stories your old high school teacher would tell us? I really don’t know what my teachers would say, because I wasn’t loud. I was a quiet, and average student and did not even make jokes or anything. March last year, you became a dad for the second time. What do you enjoy about fatherhood? I think everything. I have been an entertainer my whole life so fatherhood is very new to me and you learn something every day. It’s not like entertainment – you present something different, add a few lights and then it’s a new show, but with kids you learn something every day. The whole experience is what’s amazing to me. Rehearsal, shows, teething, nappies, what’s your recipe to keep all the balls in the air? If someone knows the concept of that recipe I would pay that person. Everyone’s life is different, so you try to fit everything you can into one day. The best I can do is to give 100% at work and 100% when I am home. That is like the best case scenario. What do you do to relax? I don’t really relax, but if I do it’s with the family. Our family made a pact that every Sunday we will take

a break from everything and spend time together. That was kind off our new year’s resolution and has worked well for us so far. Luckily my wife is taking me to Thailand for my birthday so that will be a nice vacation. Who is your biggest motivator/cheerleader? There are a few people, but my biggest cheerleader would be my wife. She supports me with everything that I do even if she thinks I’m taking on too much work or I need to take it slow. And then my manager Olivia Gildenhuys. She is the second one that will always motivate me to reach higher grounds and shoot for the stars. Also my friends, the group JAG, my parents and, like everyone, I have a lot of good people in my corner that always motivates me. You worked with a few big names in the industry, namely David Kramer and Taliep Petersen. Any life lessons you learnt from these icons that you want to share with the readers? You really do learn something from everybody and obviously the longest time of my career was with Taliep Petersen and David Kramer, but you learn so much of all the people. You steal with your eyes and learn, make mistakes and you try to improve. Even with my director Basil Appolis, we worked together for years and I know exactly what he wants. He inspires me to write my own scripts and to start producing and directing. There are quite a few people that inspire me, but I think for me, I would say the community of Mitchell’s Plain, because if you look at their lifestyle you get inspired to try better. You can see that all of them try to do better in life and it gives me the courage to try harder.

You and your wife, Michelle Gildenhuys is the perfect image of the new South Africa and that love conquers all. Any advice? She is a very good activist and example for what our country should be. I wouldn’t say it’s a new South Africa, you can only be “new” so many times but we must try to change the mentality of people or what they are used to. They say you can’t learn an old dog new tricks but you can teach the new people. That’s the reason why she does motivational talks at schools. The youth is the people you need to help and who can make a difference. She is definitely a great advocate for what this country should be. What’s on the horizon for 2018? The Emo 30 show for kykNET and my 40th birthday. It’s cool to know that you have been in the industry for so long and also relevant for so long. I know there were many before me and there would be many after me, but I have seen a lot of people come and go and you never hear from them again. Any funny memes that you saw lately? I don’t know, the last one a read was don’t be so ‘judgerag’…it is a word for when you judge people. What is you favourite hashtag? #awkard

A Bite of Latin America.
by Jenny Morris @jennymorrischef
Let’s Cook!
Paging through Susie Chatz-Andersons book A Bite of Latin America made me long for the delicious food of Brazil, she speaks of the delicious breakfast cakes served in the mornings with jugs of fresh cashew juice, the delicious empados, the little pies filled with meat or seafood, it brought back memories of steaming bowls of Moqueca delicious with coconut milk, seafood and dende oil. In this book reader is taken on a culinary tour from Mexico, travelling southwards through Central and South America as they discover each region and its gastronomy. This book provides the practical guidance to recreate the magic of these meals at home. The food has a complex layering of flavours and techniques that leaves one in a constant state of amazement. The recipes are also adapted for South Africa, where certain ingredients are difficult to find. Join Susie Chatz-Anderson on a culinary journey through Central and South America, discovering real Latin American food and recipes. Her passion for the region and its food infuses each of these delicious recipes. Packed with anecdotes and really magnificent pictures, this book offers practical guidance to help you recreate the magic of these meals at home. The subtle layering of flavour and use of authentic techniques make for scrumptious food, adapted for South Africa. Susie believes in good food and living a good life. She took a year off to travel through Mexico and South America in a quest for the best taste experiences. Discover these for yourself with A Bite of Latin America. Susie Chatz-Anderson’s passions are good food and living a good life. She constantly goes on trips around the world, discovering new taste experiences. She and her husband took one year off from the corporate world, travelling through Mexico and South-America, searching for the best dishes and eating experiences. “The origin of this book really lies in two things: my complete love of good food, and a decision taken by my husband and I – after many years of ‘normal’ life – to resign from our serious offices jobs, put all our earthly possessions into storage and buy two tickets to travel the world for one year… starting in Mexico.” Susie Chatz-Anderson
Tortilla de Espinacas
(Spinach omelette – Spanish style) This Colombia n recipe is adapted to a Spanish-style tortilla and makes a lovely light lunch when served with a crisp side salad and avocado slices
Ingredients Serves: 2-3 • • • • • • • •
1 medium-sized onion 200 g potatoes 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 200 g fresh spinach, thoroughly washed 5 large eggs 1 fresh medium-heat chilli, finely chopped Pinch of snipped fresh chives to garnish
Preparation 1. Cut the onion in half and then thinly slice into half-moons. 2. Peel the potatoes and slice into thin rounds, thoroughly drying in a cloth thereafter. 3. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan of approximately 20 cm in diameter until very hot, then add the potatoes and onion and toss until well coated with the oil.
4. Season to taste and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cook, covered, for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft (they should not brown), shaking the pan every so often. 5. In a saucepan, lightly steam the spinach. Once cooked, squeeze out all the liquid (it is very important to get all the liquid out) and chop finely. Set aside until needed. 6. Lightly beat the eggs and season with salt and pepper. 7. When the onion and potatoes are cooked, raise the heat to medium, thoroughly mix in the spinach and chilli before adding the egg mixture to the pan. 8. Reduce to low heat and cook for 20 minutes, uncovered. 9. Every so often, run a palette knife around the edges of the omelette to prevent it sticking. 10. When there is no liquid left on top of the omelette, turn it over with the help of a large plate and cook for 2 minutes more (it should remain moist in the middle). 11. Sprinkle with fresh chives before serving.

School sports injuries
Winter is Coming
With the Easter rugby festivals behind us, the winter school sports season is well under way. The winter season tends to keep sports physicians and physios a little busier due to the fast and physical nature of these sports. Here’s a brief guide for pupils and parents on the common injuries seen in active school-goers. My university professor’s words still echo in my brain, “Children are not small adults!” I had little clue what he was talking about at that stage, but his words proved to be wise. The bodies of children and adolescents are very different to those of adults and our younger patients often suffer from injuries not seen in the adult population. Parents can benefit from being familiar with the common injury scenarios so that medical attention from a sports clinician can be sought promptly. School sports injuries can be divided into acute, chronic (overuse) and growth-related injuries:
Acute injuries An acute injury is any sudden sports injury caused by some form of trauma. This trauma can take the form of a collision, a fall, a slap with a hockey stick or some form of twisting injury to a joint. The vast majority of these injuries are contusions (bruises) and/or sprains and strains of ligaments or muscles. These injuries will usually heal well with rest, time and physiotherapy but more serious injuries will require assessment by a sports physician. Also in this category are fractures of bones. Children and adolescents sometimes sustain fractures which involve the growth plates of the bone, these injuries are potentially serious due to the possibility of growth arrest in the affected bone. Concussion is an acute injury which needs to be taken seriously. Concussion can be thought of as shaking of the brain resulting in various physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms. Every suspected concussion must be seen by an experienced sports physician who will guide decisions on return to sport as well as return to school. Concussion is common in rugby but occurs in almost every other sport (equestrian is the most common).
Parents should familiarise themselves with the signs and symptoms of concussion to be able to recognise it and seek help if necessary. sportsconcussion.co.za is a fantastic resource for parents, coaches and players.
Overuse injuries Our youngsters seem to be playing more sport than ever before and often practise or play every day of the week. This repetitive load on muscles, bones and joints can take its toll though and overuse injuries may result. Overuse injuries are more common in those athletes focusing heavily on just one sport for a long time. Playing lots of different sports is preferable to early specialisation. Overuse injuries of bone, known as stress fractures, are relatively common but overuse can cause pain in joints, ligaments, tendons and growth plates too. The cure for these injuries is often a period of rest and offloading of the affected area followed by a controlled return to activity and an adjustment of the training programme to avoid recurrence.
Growth-related injuries Children undergoing rapid growth may develop osteochondroses. These are self-limiting derangements of normal bone growth and usually require no specific treatment. Pain may present at various sites, but common ones include the back of the heel (Sever’s Disease) and below the knee (Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease).
Conclusion Sports injuries are common in school-going children. Most are not serious, and children usually bounce back in record time. Don’t hesitate to consult with a sports medicine professional for more serious injuries or those not responding to rest. Safe trip, Mr Beckmann and Mr Holloway!
#imagine beweging
Mr Alton Beckmann and Mr Shaun Holloway have been selected to go to Erfurt, Germany for Automotive Diagnosis Training from 29 June to 28 July 2018 at the HWK/ Handwerkskamer Training Facility in Erfurt. This is a TVET College partnership with 8 other colleges in the Eastern Cape. We wish both Mr Beckmann and Mr Holloway well and look forward to the wealth of knowledge they will return with to share with our learners.

AWSUM WE 13 MAY 2018 Most of us like to present our moms with a gift they’ll cherish and enjoy. This can be something as simple as a scarf or as elaborate as a trip. Whatever you choose to give her doesn’t have to be expensive as long as you put thought into it and give her something you know she’ll like.

Here are some fun gift ideas you might want to consider for your mother: • Have a planner or journal embossed with something personal. If your mother likes to document special events and occasions, she’ll love having a something nice to use. Include a matching pen to make it even more special. • Give her a locket with a photo. If your mother has a locket with a photo of her children tucked away inside, she’ll cherish this forever. Find an image with you and all of your siblings to make it even more special. • Have a mug or tumbler personalized with something meaningful. Moms who enjoy coffee, tea, or water will appreciate a mug or tumbler with her name on it. You can add a saying, such as “#1 Mom” or “World’s Best Mother.” If she’s a grandmother, maybe you can include embossed, engraved, or printed images of the grandkids and a cute saying, like “Grandma’s Li’l Loves” or “Nana’s Crew.” • Give her a personalized memento box. For the mother who collects and saves everything that means something, consider getting her a special box to put it in. Pick one in her favorite color and have it

personalized so she knows it’s just for her. • Subscribe to a magazine that she’ll receive monthly or weekly. She’ll think of you every single month when her favorite magazine arrives in the mail. • Give her an autographed book. Does your mother love to read? Find out who her favorite living author is and find a way to get a signed copy of that author’s latest published book. • Bring her a bouquet of flowers. Choose her favorite blooms in colors she loves, that are beautifully arranged in a vase she can keep forever. • Give her a live flower, plant, or tree. If your mother is an outdoorsy gardening type, she’ll cherish a new rose bush, shrub, or tree that will grow and remind her of her thoughtful children. • Design an herb garden. If she enjoys cooking, you can make her either an outdoor or indoor herb garden, depending on where she lives. Make sure you label each one, and if she’s never had fresh herbs, include instructions on how to care for them.

Choir is off to the World Choir Games Cambridge High boasts a fine history of education in East London, and we are especially proud of our choir which has achieved much success over a number of years, regularly winning trophies at the annual East London Eisteddfod. 2018 is a particularly exciting one for us as our choir will be attending the World Choir Games in Tshwane taking place from 10 - 15 July. The World Choir Games is like the Olympics for choirs. It is the 10th games and it is the first time it is hosted in Africa. This international competition draws 300 of the leading choirs from 46 different nations. It is a unique opportunity for our learners to participate competitively in an international competition in our own country and is, for many, a dream come true! Excitement is building, and we intend to showcase the young talent of our province, our town and our school with pride.

Netball During the April holidays, the Cambridge High School First Netball Team attended the St Andrews School for Girls netball tournament in Johannesburg. They flew to Johannesburg on the morning of 5 April when the tournament started and returned on 8 April. The flights were made possible through the generous sponsorship of Mr Clive Berlyn of Caltex Eastern Cape Marketer. The tournament was a tough one with 13 matches being played over a period of 4 days. Some of the top girls’ schools in South Africa were amongst the 32 teams representing their different schools. The team improved their level of play with every game played and in the end attained a relatively good result. We won 6 games, drew 2 games and lost 5 games. The overall experience was a good one with our players being exposed to different schools than those we play in our regular fixtures. An added bonus was that Asekho Njeza was selected as one of the twelve All Star players of the tournament. This is an accolade for the way in which she represented her school at the tournament. The All Star players have been invited to a tournament in Maritius that is taking place in October. Subsequently a second player, Aphiwe Manyika, has also been invited to the tournament in Mauritius by Vision Sport. Asekho Njeza with the Principal of St Andrews School for Girls and a representative from Vision Sport.

The U11 Rugby boys recently undertook a successful trip to Port Elizabeth to play in the Clarendon Park U11 Rugby Festival where they had good wins against Herbert Hurd and the host school.
