National Braai Day is the brainchild of Jan Scannell, better known as Jan Braai. He experienced his ‘quarterlife crisis’ in 2005 and felt it was time to add value to society. His idea was to launch a project to improve nation building – to join all the great aspects, and so the idea of a national party day happened. The States have their Thanksgiving, Ireland their St Patrick’s Day, The Netherlands their Koninginnedag … and now we have our Braai Day, because what is more uniquely South African than a braai? Enjoy our interview with Jan, as well as the best recipe ever for braaibroodjies (toast on the braai) on the next page. Unfortunately, we are also in the season of allergies and hay fever, so we brought you some Nadia Matthee information on how to avoid and manage these Junior Designer annoying attacks. Braai
Jan Braai is undisputedly South Africa’s favourite braai master. AWSUM News chatted to him while his Jan Braai convoy of 60 vehicles were dodging not only a herd of cows, but also a flock of ostriches somewhere outside of Calitzdorp. Q: How was Jan Braai created? A: Jan Braai was born when I created the Twitter handle @janbraai and people started referring to me like that. Luckily my real name is also Jan, so I do not have too much of a split personality! Q: What do you think about women who are becoming the braai masters more and more? A: Oh, I think it is fantastic! The days of men standing around the braai making ‘men talk’ while the women are inside making potato salad en daintily sipping on rosé, are gladly passing quickly. Women have a distinctive feeling for braaivleis, and actually braai much better. (I am ducking!) Q: When are the coals ‘just right”? A: As soon as the flames have burnt out. Let go of the idea of testing the coals by holding your hand just so long at just so high over the coals. As soon as there are only coals, you braai.

Q: What do you braai? A: Anything – sheep, beef, chicken, fish – you name it. Q: What do you drink with braaivleis? A: A very civilised gin & tonic (which, of course, is also great protection against malaria mosquitoes) while I braai, wine with the meal, and afterwards a brandy, or even a whiskey. Q: What do you enjoy for dessert? A: That afterbraai, when we put some more wood on the fire for atmosphere, and put something on the coals again. Q: What is your mission? A: To get 50 million South Africans to braai on one day! Three braai books and many TV shows later, it is happening! Some of the books are also available overseas, so the message gets spread far and wide! Q: What is your message for all the braaiers? A: Keep it classy, South Africa!
Were at The Lofts Boutique Hotel on Thesen Island in Knysna, feeling quite chuffed with life and the hotel management said it would not be a problem if we wanted to braai on the deck. The only question was, what to braai in such a decadent setting. Now earlier in the day we got a very nice sourdough bread from Il de Pain, the renowned bakery on Thesen Island, and I wanted to use that as part of the meal. So the decision fell on creating a few super luxurious braaibroodjies. Normal white toaster bread was replaced by slices of the world class Il de Pain sourdough bread, chutney was swopped for a mixture of French style mayonnaise and whole grain mustard. Onion was replaced by spring onion and tomato was replaced with sundried tomatoes. Naturally we needed cheese and the decision fell on 18 months matured cheddar. For team spirit I also added gypsy ham into each unit. Forget about butter on the outside – for these creations you use olive oil on the outside.
What you need
• Slices of fresh sourdough bread • French style mayonaise • Whole grain mustard • Gypsy ham • 18 months matured cheddar • Sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil • Spring onions • olive oil
What to do
1. Go for an oval shape sourdough bread as opposed to a round one. This way all the slices will be the same size. Slice the bread fairly thin, the same thickness as normal toaster bread. One has a natural tendency to slice these types of bread thicker, so be conscious of avoiding that. 2. Lay out half of the bread slices on a cutting board and liberally spread with the French style mayonaise and whole grain mustard. 3. Add the gypsy ham, slices of cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and
chopped spring onions. Do not be stingy with any of the ingredients – this is a super luxury braaibroodjie and not only should the quality of ingredients reflect it, but also the quantity. 4. Add the top layers of bread and drip or spread olive oil on them. 5. Place in a hinged grid (toeklaprooster) and braai over medium-low heat coals. After the first turn, also spread olive oil on the other outside (the side that was at the bottom when you assembled the units). Continue to braai over the gentle coals, turning very often, until the cheese is melted and the braaibroodjies are golden brown on the outside. 6. Health & Wellbeing Spring Allergies Spring means gardens and parks are back to being prettier than ever. It’s also the season for stuffy noses and sneezing, no thanks to allergies. But why do people get these spring allergies in the first place? During spring, flowers bloom, and along with it the pollens are released into the air. These tiny specks of nature travel and hopefully pollinate other trees and flowers for their continued existence. However, when these pollens end up in your nostrils and accidentally inhale them, they can irritate the immune system, which sees them as foreign invaders. The body’s immunity then releases antibodies and a chemical known as histamine. For non-allergic people, these histamines are kept at a tolerable level. However, for those who are prone to allergies, the immune system goes into an overdrive and releases loads of histamine that, in turn, causes the common signs and symptoms of allergies. Pollens, however, are not the only culprits. During spring, the environment can be humid, making the surroundings including your home a perfect breeding ground for molds, which can cause the same reaction to your immune system as pollens.
“But why do people get these spring allergies in the first place?”
Prevent Those Pesky Allergies You can’t shelter yourself completely from these spring allergens, but there are many steps you can take to reduce your exposure and hopefully prevent those allergies. • First, get a clear diagnosis of your allergies. Typically, people have allergies to three or four species of trees and plants. So even if pollen counts are high, it doesn’t mean your allergies are worse. That’s why diagnosis is such an important part of allergy care. • Pay more attention to the environment too. Certain pollens move at different times of the day, and usually, during spring, these pollens come from trees. They also tend to be less active when it’s raining, but their number increases after. Expect exposure to be very high during mornings and windy days, so you might want to avoid outdoor activities at these times. • You should also be more proactive by making allergy medications your best friend. Drugs such as antihistamines and decongestants can protect you from allergies or at least reduce the symptoms. In fact, begin taking them early or before symptoms appear. With a week or two lead time, you’ll feel better all season. Although some of them require prescription, most of them are available over the counter, so having them is easy. • Don’t forget to keep your indoor air clean. Q: How can I extend my battery life? A: Check your battery regularly to ensure the terminals are clean, tightly secured and free of corrosion. Corrosion and leaks can interfere with the battery’s performance. Also get your battery tested regularly to make sure it’s charging correctly. Ensure the hold-down bar which secures the battery in place is fitted correctly. This minimises damage-causing vibration.
Q: What should I do when my battery goes flat? A: If your battery’s flat, you can recharge it using a portable battery charger. Jump starting is only a quick fix – best practice is to charge the battery properly to keep it in good condition. For complete peace of mind, visit your nearest battery centre to make sure your battery is in peak condition.

Sporting weekends
Construction started After five years of planning and fundraising, construction of our new drop-off zone, waiting area and aftercare centre has finally begun. Mrs Anet Schwartz,deputy principal of Voorpos Primary School, Mrs Marlene Swinney, project manager, and members of Dewing Construction Company were present at the official site handover.
Our U/13 netball and rugby teams attended the Stulting Sports Day and our U/10 and U/11 netball girls and U/11 rugby boys attended the Sunday’s River Sports Day. The girls and boys had an amazing time and our younger players had the opportunity to stay over at Welgelegen Camp, where they participated in many fun activities. Thank you to the teachers who accompanied these learners. It was an experience that they are sure not to forget.

BEACONHURST SCHOOL East London Music Festival 2016 Beaconhurst Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase learners once again participated in the annual Music Festival held in East London. This year the standard was exceptionally high, with the glorious sound of the choirs, the melodic tunes of the bands and the energetic sound waves of the marimba and percussion bands. A tremendous effort is made by all music departments in East London schools, which culminates in two evenings of soul-reviving and heart-gladdening moments for all those who attended. Grade 7 camp The Grade 7s returned this year to Hobbiton on Hogsback for their annual Grade 7 camp after an absence of three years. The hikes to the Madonna and Child waterfall, as well as a 5-hour hike on day 2 were highlights of the camp. During the camp, the children were taught life skills such as social interaction in the form of team building, as well as personal development skills that might enable them to become leaders. As a core philosophy, all activities offered at Hobbiton must be voluntary and fun!
Computer Applications Olympiad 38 High School learners at Beaconhurst received certificates for their achievements in the 2016 Computer Applications Olympiad. Thirteen of these awards were silver, while two were gold awards for achieving amongst the top 7% countrywide. Jana Pudifin and Caitlin Smit are our proud winners of the Gold certificates.
Geography Outing The Grade 11 Geography excursion first stopped at Totally Solar in Gonubie, where they learned how we can save our planet by saving energy, as well as and how solar panels and solar geysers work. The next stop was Adventure Power, where they were taken into the factory and were all amazed by all the various machines and their functions. The group also went to the harbour and were shown inside the tug boats, getting a sneak peak of how the dry dock operates. The Geography students are now working on projects, based on Totally Solar, Adventure Power and the harbour.

This annual 100 Word Competition is organised by the South African Council for English Education (SACEE), and is probably one of the most difficult of all writing genres! Junior leader camp 2016 On Friday, 26 August a group of Grade 11 learners embarked on a fun-filled weekend with the aim of learning about leadership and teamwork. The group was divided into four teams, the Blue District (blue), Red Heat (red), Savage Minions (yellow) and The Wolf Pack (green). Each team persevered through the raftbuilding, orange combat and so much more, but in the end the Savage Minions and Blue District took first place. Grade 11 Leadership Camp The annual Stirling High School Grade 11 Leadership Camp took place at Hobbiton on Hogsback from 19 to 21 August.
LILYFONTEIN SCHOOL Lilyfontein Adventure Race The Lilyfontein Adventure Race saw 472 athletes, aged from 7 to 60, take to six different routes around the East Coast resorts area. A huge thank you to the local community who supported us this year, the local farmers who moved livestock and allowed us access to their property and the natural wonders that are usually hidden away, and to the local businesses that supported us with sponsorship to make the running of the race possible. The East Coast area ROCKS!!!

We are proudof Lara’s achievement, especially as the tournament is at U17 level. In the latest SA rankings, Lara is ranked No. 6 in the U16 division.

Clarendon awarded Eco Schools’ Green Flag Clarendon High School for Girls qualified for the WESSA/ WWF Eco-Schools’ Green Flag at the end of 2015. Ms Sue Spies (in charge of the WESSA schools’ programme for the Eastern Cape) honoured the school by awarding the Green Flag at a recent assembly. This flag is awarded after the completion of three themes from the WESSA handbook guidelines. • Clarendon’s first theme was adopted in 2012 and it encapsulates the theme of “Resource Use”, specifically recycling. Clarendon has established a recycling centre at school which currently caters for cans, paper and cardboard. They were awarded a Bronze Certificate at the end of that year. • Their second theme was from the “Healthy Living” section and here they have concentrated on hygiene, safety at school, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. The tuck shop implemented a variety of healthy options and the girls also introduced Meat Free Mondays. The school, as a result, was awarded a Silver Certificate in 2013. • “Nature and Biodiversity” was their third theme where they have focused their attention on water conservation. They have changed all the shower heads in the hostel to

low flow showerheads, put sinkers in the cistern of toilets to allow for a low flush system, moved their Jo-Jo tanks to the new Astro (from which they plan to water the turf in future). The girls were made aware of the plight of people in drought-stricken areas and generously donated water to assist these communities. They have also started to monitor the state of our rivers and estuaries as part of the mini-Sass programme and are currently monitoring the Nahoon River at the Abbotsford and Dorchester causeways. This year they have been focusing on “Global and Local Issues”, specifically Ocean Pollution and hope to submit their work for another audit at the end of 2017. Clarendon Enviro Club Commmittee members proudly display their Eco-Schools Green Flag.
Thando Mtalana and Bianca Wood were selected for the SA U/16 A Hockey Team and Kia Erasmus was selected for the SA U/16B team at the National Inter-provisional hockey tournament. Bianca was the vice captain of the A team. Bianca was also the vice captain of the Border u/16A hockey team as well as the National u/16 A top goal scorer and top striker of the tournament. She has been selected for the u23 PHL League.
HUDSON PARK HIGH Our very own scientist Camden Davidse received 90% in the Bio-Science Olympiad and was ranked first in the country. We are very proud of your accomplishment!
Cheerleaders The HPHS cheerleaders were invited to perform their dance routines at the Africa T20 Cup fixture held at Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium.
SELBORNE COLLEGE The Selborne Senior Debating team participated in the Eastern Cape Provincials. The team won against Victoria Girls High School in Round 1 and lost to Holy Cross narrowly in Round 2. They won Round 3, 4 and 5 against Graeme College, Queenstown Girls High and Queen’s College respectively. On Sunday, the break was announced, Selborne breaking 4th with 4 wins and 1184 speaker points. They encountered Hudson in the semi-finals, and made it through to the finals. After a heated debate against Clarendon, Selborne was unanimously declared the winners. Well done to the team, consisting of debating veterans Timothy Malinzi, Leonardo Doolooa, McKeon Msimango and Jason Lane, as well as the promising Junior Nxumalo in his first provincial tournament. A big congratulations to Jason Lane on making his return to the Eastern Cape Senior team going to Nationals at the end of the year.

Hudson Park High School are extremely proud of our learners who took part in the Eastern Cape Debating Provincial Tournament, held in Queenstown. Lerato Motaung, placed 1st overall, with Thando Dyasi, placing 2nd. Lelethu Mbokoma also did us proud by placing 7th. The following pupils have made the Eastern Cape Senior Team: Lerato Motaung, Thando Dyasi and Siyasanga Kwinana. We wish them all the very best for their national tournament in December.
It was with great excitement that 94 Grade 11s clambered onto four buses on 25 August for the start of the annual Grade 11 Camp in Hobbiton. The Grade 11s enjoyed a multitude of activities, including Camp Olympics, leadership workshops, hiking, abseiling, and team and individual challenges. It did not matter that they had been put into groups and were not with their usual friends, as new friendships were forged through difficulty and fun.
On 29 August, Hudson Park High held its prefect induction ceremony. A new electronic voting system was used with incredible accuracy. The school elected 28 new prefects with Thando Dyasi and Amy Sharrock leading the body as Head Prefects. Well done to all our new leaders. We are excited to follow your lead to new heights.

Eastern Cape schools play festival On 5 August, our drama boys took part in the Alexander Playhouse Eastern Cape Schools Play Festival with Aria da Capo, written by Edna St Vincent Millay and directed by Jo Stemmet, as one of the 13 plays. The play was chosen to perform as one of the top 6 on 18 August, adjudicated by Deon Opperman and Fezile Mpeta. Once again the boys made a huge impression on the judges. They finished third at the Gala Event, held on 20 August.
ATKV Tienertoneel Our Drama Club took part in the annual ATKV Tienertoneel Regional Festival, held in the Little Theatre. On 1 September, the boys were, in the words of one of the adjudicators the “highlight of the evening” with the performance of Naguile, written by Wim Vorster and directed by Jo Stemmet. On 2 September, our boys moved the audience and adjudicators with their immaculate, powerful and emotionally loaded performance of Tableaux in Rooi: Olie op Skilderdoek, 1976, written and directed by Jo Stemmet. Both these plays were then selected to perform again at the regional finals as two of the top four plays on 3 September. At this event, Tableaux was placed in second place and Naguile, was announced as the overall winner. At the performances of both these plays, our boys received standing ovations. Various additional awards were made by the ATKV adjudicators. These awards are only made in exceptional circumstances. Gold awards are seldom awarded. Bronze awards are given for a percentage of 65-74, silver 74-85 and gold for a percentage higher than 85. The gold awards made to our boys were as follows: Tableaux in Rooi: Olie op Skilderdoek, 1976: Décor, set and lighting design, overall handling of technical aspects. Naguile: The production overall as regional winner and Sibulele Mali as “Samkelo”.
