Western Cape families have a lot to smile about. The Class of 2025 delivered the province’s best matric pass rate ever: 88.2% (up from 86.6% in 2024). And it wasn’t just about passing as more learners earned quality results too. The province’s Bachelor’s pass rate climbed to 49.2%, and Western Cape candidates collected 31,220 distinctions in total.
Nationally, South Africa achieved an 88.0% pass rate in 2025 (also a record).
In the provincial picture, the Western Cape’s 88.2% sits among the stronger performers, with KwaZulu-Natal (90.6%), Free State (89.33%), and Gauteng (89.06%) slightly ahead.
One of the Western Cape’s biggest “wow” moments: Mathematics. The province posted 73.7%, the highest maths pass rate in the country. Physical Sciences was also strong at 80.6% (second-highest nationally).
Looking across the big national subjects, History was one of the strongest overall (91.8% achieved 30%+), while Mathematics remained the toughest (64.0% achieved 30%+ nationally).
Abigail Kok from York High School (George) was named the top candidate in South Africa for the Class of 2025, and also top in Physical Sciences.
The IEB often highlights achievement through national “Outstanding” lists rather than naming a single top Western Cape learner. One reported Western Cape standout was Nina Benson (Somerset College, Somerset West), recognised for Outstanding Achievement, with 100% for Mathematics noted by her school.
