Meet Liam Chetty, a Grade 8 learner at our school. Not only is Liam a talented swimmer and Water Polo player but an incredibly talented Biathle athlete, as well.

Liam recently qualified for selection to the South African Modern Pentathlon Association’s Biathle Team and travelled to Port Said in Egypt where he competed in the World Biathle & Triathle World Championships on the 10th of October.

Honours Cum Laude for Visual Art

Our school recently held its Winter Sport & Cultural Awards assembly. We are thrilled to announce that a Grade 11 learner, Gabriella Luff, and two of our Grade 12 learners, Aobakwe Kola and Ave Bacela, were awarded the prestigious Honours Cum Laude awards for Visual Arts.

This is the first time in the school’s history that learners have received Honours Cum Laude for Visual Art. Aobakwe and Ave were also recipients of Triple Gold Awards for their artwork at this year’s ELFEST Creative Arts Eistedfodd. Congratulations to these incredibly talented artists.

Grade 11 learner, Kendra Ball, was recently selected to represent the International Shotokan Karate Federation South Africa team.

Kendra recently placed 1st in the u.18 age category at the National Karate Championships held in Pretoria which resulted in her selection to the SA team.

Kendra travelled to London, England, with her teammates, coach and manager where she competed in the u.18 Female Black Belt Kumite (combat) and Kata (technical style) divisions at the 4th World Shoto Cup from the 19th to the 22nd of September.

Meet Mitchell Myerscough, a Grade 8 learner at Hudson Park High School. Not only is he a talented squash player but an incredibly talented cricketer, too.

In a recent 20 overs match against Selborne u.14B, Mitchell posted the second highest batting total ever scored by a Hudsonian, and definitely the fastest. The knock was a very impressive 163 runs off 64 balls before he lost his wicket. The record for the highest score ever posted by a Hudsonian bastman, is the 184 by Thozama Totana. This was set in 2021 in a declaration match against Stirling 1st XI. We commend Mitchell for his remarkable accomplishment and anticipate his future performances. Head Prefects -

Eskom Expo

Great Umejesi is a Grade 10 learner at our school. He has developed a mobile phone application, “Solution to Equal Access to Quality Shoes”. The app, when loaded onto mobile phones, connects donors of good quality pre-loved shoes with prospective recipients needing a particular size shoe. Great’s intention when creating the app, was to allow advantaged citizens to help those less fortunate - community enrichment.

He recently participated in a local science fair hosted by Eskom with his project and received a silver award for his entry. He also received the top award at the event - the Best Innovation award, which was a Rhodes University scholarship for his first year of studies, and he qualified to participate in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair at Emperor’s Palace from 23-27 September.

At the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair, his innovative project earned him a well-deserved bronze medal. His dedication and passion for making a positive impact in the community are truly inspiring.

Our Girls’ 1st Water Polo team has also had its fair share of achievements in the pool. They recently won the u.19 girls’ section of the local Clarendon Stayers’ Water Polo Tournament hosted by Clarendon High School, beating Pearson High School 10-7 in the final. Kara Batting win the award for ‘Best Attacker of the Tournament’

Our u.14A girls’ Water Polo Team has had a fantastic season and finished it off on a high note by winning the girls’ section of The Peter Cuff u.14 Water Polo Tournament.Prior to this victory, they achieved a second place at the Collegiate Spring Water Polo Tournament and a third place in the girls’ u15 section at the Clarendon Stayers’ Water Polo Tournament. We are incredibly proud of the girls and their achievements this year, and we look forward to seeing them compete in the future at Hudson Park.

Academic Honours

We pay tribute to one exceptional young man today. Always clever, he has aimed to better himself over the course of his high school career and he has worked tirelessly towards this end.

What is most inspirational about this academic young man is his selflessness in helping others. He has dedicated many hours to helping others with the subjects in which he excels and seems to be most successful in getting the information across. He is quietly intelligent and has impressed staff with his insight and dedication to mastering his subjects.

He is an individual with integrity - someone who can be relied on. A long time ago there used to be an expression that ran: “he is a man I would take to war with me”. Said now, it does not sound like the compliment that it was 50 or 100 years ago. It stands for a solid and upright person, who is loyal and gives of their best.

I cannot think of an individual that it better describes. This is a true leader. He has lead by example and has done great things for the academic portfolio. He is a talented actor and has impressed us with his appearance on stage. He is involved in multiple community service roles across the school. He is musical and is in the choir and the steelband.

At the beginning of the year, he was determined to reach his goal of academic honours. This was no mean feat as his Grade 11 average was short by a couple of marks. Proving the motto “Virtute et Opera”, he did not allow any disappointment to act as an obstacle to his dreams.

Physical Science Olympiad

We are thrilled to announce the results from the NRF Physical Science Olympiad! Our participating Graemians can be incredibly proud of their accomplishments. Out of 427 entrants in the Eastern Cape, the overall average score was 43%. Remarkably, all our entrants placed in the top 20% of the province!

A special shoutout to Noah Tabensky for his outstanding performance, achieving an impressive score of 75%, ranking sixth highest in the Eastern Cape.

EP Cricket Selections

Five players were selected into the Eastern Province u16 team.

Andrew Muir has arguably been the stand out player for the 1st XI this year, and possibly the most consistent. With massive performances throughout the year. He was man of the match in the knockout game against SAC this week.

Lisekho Zinyane has been superb, and shown class throughout the year. He was the best bowler in the SA20 match against SAC. Among so many impressive performances, he knocked over the Grey High top order in a tense 1st XI match.

Corbin Tidbury is a player that we are all talking about at the moment. The 14 year old has already been selected into the EP u16 side. He recently scored 80 against the SACS 1st XI and scored 148 last week against Dale.

Zuko Pontshi has already made his name as one of the very best batsmen in the country. He has a number of centuries next to his name already, including one for the 1st XI. Watch this space...

Jordan Damons has led the 1st XI bowling attack this year and has been absolutely superb. It is his second year in the EP u16 side.

The team will be representing Eastern Province Cricket, at the National Boys U16 week. That is scheduled to take place from 09 December 2024 to 15 December 2024 in Pretoria.

Luphelo Mdyesha has also been selected into the EP u19 team. The prestigious Khaya Majola week will be held in Cape Town this year from 16-20 Dec.

Christo Botha beklee al die afgelope paar jaar die Eerste Klasposisie. Hy doen nie net goed akademies nie, maar is ook baie kunstig en het, buiten die trofees wat hy by PJ ontvang het, ook verskeie toekennings van Johan Carinus Kunsskool gekry. Baie geluk, Christo!

Marcelle Schoonbee Sportvrou van die Jaar

Marcelle Schoonbee was ‘n staatmaker op die netbalbaan. Sy het vir die eerstespan gespeel, was die kaptein en het selfs van die jonger spanne afgerig. Op die atletiekbaan het sy uitgeblink as Victrix Laudorum en deurgedring tot by die OP kampioenskappe. Sy was ook ‘n kranige tennisspeler, wat alreeds van Gr.4 af vir die eerste tennisspan gespeel het.

Dis vir ons ‘n voorreg om Marcelle te eer, vir die tweede keer, met hierdie trofee.

Veruschka Burger Beste Akademiese prestasie in Gr. 7

Veruschka Burger het verskeie toekennings by die prysuitdeling ontvang. Sy het in omtrent al haar vakke die beste in die klas gedoen. Boonop is sy nog kreatief ook, en het ‘n goue sertifikaat vir kuns gekry.

Sy het beslis deur die jaar hard gewerk, en dis met trots wat ons die trofee aan haar toeken.

Junior and Senior Prize-Giving and Sports Awards Dinner

Sipho Nonyalela and Matipa Karimazondo were the recipients of the Sportsman and Sports women of the year.

Matipa Karimazondo was the head girl this year and also represents Zimbabwe and EP in Water Polo, she also played in the Kingswood 1st teams for hockey, netball and water polo this year.

Sipho Nonyalela is an all round sportsman who played rugby in the Kingswood 1st XV and represented EP Craven Week as well as SA U18A rugby.

Sipho Nonyalela and Josh Mackenzie were awarded Honours in the Final Sports Award Assembly for representing SA in Rugby, he has been signed to the Shark for 2025.

Four girls were selected for the EP Debating team, they are Diya Harjeven, Caitlin Steymann, Rosemary Colenso and Sophie Buttner.

ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE

Hockey

St Andrew’s College pupil Gregory Rodwell and DSG pupils Abigail Holderness, and Lucy Holderness are currently in Malaysia, representing the South African u.17 hockey teams in the Mirnawan Cup, held in Kuala Lumpur.

The SA u.17 Boys’ Team, featuring Gregory Rodwell, played against Canada and achieved an impressive victory with a score of 9-1. Meanwhile, the SA u.17 Girls’ Team, with both Abigail and Lucy Holderness, faced off against Malaysia Tigress and won 4-0. Lucy contributed significantly by scoring South Africa’s first goal, a field goal.

The SA Boys’ Team will compete again today against South Korea (SA time, 10am; Malaysia time, 4pm). The SA Girls’ Team has a rest day on Monday.

The Ridge Cricket Tour

St Andrew’s Preparatory School hosted The Ridge School for an exciting weekend of cricket from 24–26 October. Players from the u.10, u.11, and u.13 teams competed in T20 and limited overs matches, showcasing their skills and passion for the sport. The tour began on Thursday with the u.9 and u.11 teams taking to the field. The u.9 boys played spiritedly but could not secure a win, while the u.11 team emerged victorious, bolstered by standout performances from Jemillo Adriaan, who scored 54*, and Kyle van der Linde, who added 51* runs.

The u.13 team had a special opportunity to play under the lights at Knowling Field, making the most of it by winning their match. Mitha Nosindwa impressed with 61 runs, while Rahul Bhowan’s (The Ridge) sharp bowling secured 2 wickets in his 4 overs. Friday’s matches were tightly contested, with The Ridge claiming a win in the u.9 game. Highlights included an outstanding 100 runs in 68 balls from Christopher Schroeder (The Ridge) and a remarkable 90 off 47 balls by William Waterston (The Ridge). Harry Riley also reached his half-century in this thrilling encounter.In the u.11 match, Blake Anslie celebrated a century, and Jemillo Adriaan had an exceptional bowling performance, taking 5 wickets. Phillip Herholdt added to the excitement with 3 wickets for just 9 runs.

The St Andrew’s Prep u.13 team posted an impressive 301/5 in their 30 overs. Nicholas Gordon and Matthew Blaine scored unbeaten 64 and 72, respectively. Ross Ferguson’s bowling added the final touch, with 3 wickets for 11 runs, sealing another victory for Prep. The weekend was filled with outstanding cricket from both schools, highlighting skill, sportsmanship, and the joy of the game.

This past Friday, we had the privilege of hosting our St Andrew’s Prep Water Polo Festival, a day brimming with excitement and competitive spirit! Boys and girls from u.10s to u.15s took to the pool, treating us to a series of entertaining matches that showcased skill, teamwork, sportsmanship and pure FUN.

It was wonderful to see players from across the province come together for some fantastic water polo. A massive thank you goes out to the dedicated coaches and managers from Selborne Primary School, Grey Junior School, Kingswood College, South Africa, Woodridge College & Preparatory School, The Diocesan School for Girls - Makhanda, and St Andrew’s College, whose efforts helped make the day a huge success!

Basketball Vs Theodor Herzl High School

On Wednesday, 30 October, St Andrew’s College had the pleasure of hosting Theodor Herzl High School for an exciting round of basketball fixtures featuring our u.15B and 3rd teams.The u.15B game was a thrilling contest, with the lead changing hands multiple times throughout the match. Unfortunately, in the 4th quarter, the momentum shifted in favour of Theodor Herzl High School, as their shots consistently found the basket. Meanwhile, the St Andrew’s College u.15B team struggled to score, resulting in a close loss.

The 3rd team had a slower start against the senior team from Theodor Herzl High School, allowing them to stay competitive in the first half. However, after the halftime break, our players found their rhythm and showcased a free-flowing style of play, ultimately securing a solid victory. It was a fantastic day of basketball, and we were thrilled to host Theodor Herzl High School. We look forward to continuing to build our basketball programs together and fostering friendly competition between our schools.

On Saturday, St Andrew’s College took on Graeme College in Makhanda. Winning the toss, St Andrew’s elected to bowl first. Graeme College began with a strong 50-run opening partnership, with Qhama Ngoma achieving an impressive half-century.

William Beamish broke the partnership, with additional support from a disciplined spell by Ababalwe Zingela. Spin bowlers Thomas Bussiahn, Rhys Wiblin, and Benjamin Coventry excelled, collectively taking seven wickets and bowling Graeme College out for 151 runs.

In their chase, St Andrew’s College lost an early wicket, sparking energy among the Graeme players. However, Myles Sansom and Rhys Wiblin stabilised the innings, with Sansom scoring a quick 51 off 51 balls. Ethan Bradfield also contributed with a brisk 33 off 36 balls, edging the team closer to victory. Despite tight bowling from Graeme College, St Andrew’s College held firm to win by 4 wickets, demonstrating resilience and skill.

South African Schools Boat Race 2024

The Standard Bank South African School’s Boat Race, hosted by St Andrew’s College will take place on the 6th and 7th of December in Port Alfred. This year’s event will be the 24th edition with the past 23 races all having taken place on the Kowie River.

Twenty-eight school and club crews, from across the country, are set to take part in what is one of the premier events for junior rowers in South Africa. It is a unique challenge for all the competitors as they must navigate the twists and turns and changing tides of the Kowie River, compared to normal rowing events which take place on a straight course over one or two kilometres.

In the Junior Men’s event, racing over 5,5km, St Benedict’s College from Bedfordview in Johannesburg is the defending champion and has set the pace in Gauteng so far this season. The top crews from the Eastern and Western Cape hope to challenge them for the title they have now won for four consecutive years. Taking part for the first time in the Junior Men’s event is Soweto Rowing Club from Johannesburg.

St Mary’s School from Waverley, Johannesburg has been the defending champion for nine consecutive years in the Junior Women’s race and will be out to defend their title once again. Newcomer to this event is Wemmer Pan Rowing Club from Johannesburg, as well as St Dunstan’s College who returns to the competition for the first time since 2018. The Junior Women’s crews race covers a 4,2km course, starting from the corner of Centenary Park. Makhanda schools, St Andrew’s College and the Diocesan School for Girls will be represented at the event.

The St Andrew’s College crew will be looking to defend and improve on its strong 3rd place finish in 2023.
