About Me:

Hello, my name is Tibby Heard. I am a Junior at Virginia Tech pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Interior Design. I am passionate about healing people through my spaces and engaging in a holistic approach to designing for the whole person. Spaces should be more than the environment we exist in, I believe the spaces we inhabit should adapt to support our basic functions and drive our productivity.

I Intend to pursue a career in Healthcare design working with healthcare systems to create the healing spaces of the future. Approaching my designs as if they are another medicinal tool. I believe that the environments that we recover in have a huge impact on not only our mental and emotional health but also our physical health. By redesigning healthcare spaces we can create a better, more functional spaces for the doctors and nurses and more comfortable and welcoming spaces for patients to recover in.

Loop Agriculture

Question: How can an office space cultivate a culture of urban self sufficiency?

Focus: Technical drafting of focal architecture points and human interaction with space.

Programs: Revit, Twinmotion, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator.

Length: 11 Weeks, 3rd year.

Concept:

Loop agriculture satellite education office will be a harmony between innovation offices and community learning spaces. The space is the physical manifestation of the mission statement unifying the natural juxtaposition of plants and urban spaces. With an industrial atmosphere permeated by the natural world - Sunlight, green plants, water systems and ambiance the space will promote the wellness of all its occupants human and plant. The space, inspired by a lush forest aims to create those special moments of descending light rays. Creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere of a nature walk. A place where humans can face their role in stewarding the natural world and caring for it, Inviting both the visitors and the users to engage in its elements and learn from their experience.

Site Research: Facade is south-east facing providing ample indoor sunlight access suitable for indoor vertical gardening and human health.

Reverberance

Question: How can a system in nature inspire the space through more than aesthetics?

Focus: Research of the spiderweb system through hand drawn studies and AutoCAD drafting.

Programs: Sketchup, AutoCAD, Twinmotion, Photoshop.

Length: 7 Weeks, 2nd year.

Concept:

Vibration - Interwoven - Shrouded- Fractured

The space in Between Spaces - Auditorium : Music Classrooms.

The biomimic inspiration for this partition is spiderwebs. Mimicking their strength and form this wall aims to convey the reverberating nature music and spiderwebs share. The repetitive rhythm of the space establishes a tranquil atmosphere focusing on limiting acoustical and visual stimuli for musicians to take a break as they go from lessons to performances. All the elements form materials and colors, to the shape of the wall is designed to further promote a restful environment for musicians.

Hand-drawn Studies - Graphically understanding research done on the structural components of a spiderweb, created around a single Y shaped support thread and is then encircled by rings of web.

Hand Modeled 3D Recreation of Sketches - Created out of foam board and chipboard. Discovering how the designs and studies done as sketches interact with the human users and the environment that hosts the design.

Plan [NTS]

The floor plan shows the floor and ceiling connected way-finding drawing people into this restful space and slowly releasing them back out into the musical spaces.

Sections - [NTS]

The sections focus on incorporating different functions to support musicians including acoustical seating, a desk with power stations, and instrument storage space within the web design.

Blossoming Bonds - Group Project

Question: How can a space encourage and shelter intergenerational relationships?

Focus: Creating a space that could adapt to both young and old users.

Programs: Revit, AutoCAD, Enscape, Photoshop, Canva.

Length: 2 Weeks, 3rd year.

Concept:

Alleviating the emotional toll of “sandwich parents” by providing a space to cultivate a new relationship between young and old.

Blossoming Bonds is a sanctuary designed to cultivate new connections between young and old generations creating empowered new family dynamics for the Sandwich Generation, who typically bear sole emotional support responsibilities within a multi-generational family. The space fosters a new triangle of support in the family, each generation connected to the others. Similarly, the mountain laurel plant shoots new growth roots that provide new terrain and experience to the older plant while the older plant provides nutrients and resilience to the new growths. Activities in this space are included to aid in generational connections creating an intersection of exploration and solidarity.

Group Members: Rachel Helmick, Daniela Evans, Ally Hagyard

My Contributions: 1) Deep Research into intergenerational needs, sandwich generation concept, mountain Laurel Concept. 2) Swing and Seat Functional Slatting Design and Drafting. 3) Poster - design explanation texts, Concept statement, Design Problem and impact.
