A BRIEF HISTORY

ABOUT THE CLUB

The Story of Thurmaston DPC FC

Thurmaston DPC FC was founded in 2017 to meet the growing demand for local football — not just as a team, but as a safe space where men could forget their daily struggles, stay active, and support their mental wellbeing in a friendly, welcoming environment.

The club was launched alongside the Chairman’s business, Thurmaston Design & Print Co., which gave the team both its name and identity. From day one, the badge proudly featured a fox crest, representing its Leicester roots, paired with black and white as the club colours. To this day, the black and white socks remain a symbol of the club’s heritage.

In September 2017, James West led the first ever DPC side into competition in the Leicester & Charnwood Sunday Football League.

Finding a Home

Interest within the village of Thurmaston grew rapidly. Although the team initially played home fixtures at Thurnby Lodge, it quickly became a priority to bring football home. That breakthrough came at the end of the 2017/18 season, when DPC played its first fixture in Thurmaston — a cup tie at Elizabeth Park. Despite defeat, it marked a turning point.

Shortly after, an agreement was reached to relocate to Garden Street, giving the club its first true base. Support grew, crowds increased on Sunday mornings, and more players expressed interest. The club’s philosophy came to life: To provide competitive football for adults who want to play.

Expansion and First Silverware

By the third season, demand was so high that a reserve team was formed, allowing even more local players to represent the club. Around 50 adult men were now proudly wearing the DPC badge.

That same year, the club fundraised and purchased its own site cabin for Garden Street — transforming an empty pitch into a proper home with storage and changing facilities.

In 2020/21, the club underwent a structural reshuffle to create a better player pathway and ensure the First Team remained competitive. It paid off — under James West, the club secured its first-ever silverware, with captain Piers Wheeler lifting the trophy after a dominant cup final performance.

The Birth of the Women’s Section Momentum continued, and in 2021, a group of women approached the

club asking to start a ladies’ team. The answer was simple: Yes.

The 2021/22 season saw the launch of the third DPC team — the Women’s Section, managed by captain Piers Wheeler. Returning to Thurnby Lodge, they stunned everyone by winning Leicestershire Women’s Division 2 at the first attempt — the club’s first league title.

Meanwhile, the Men’s First Team reached two cup finals, showcasing just how far the club had come.

FA Cup Dreams & Relocation

In October 2022, FA Cup fever hit as the Men’s First Team entered the Sunday FA Cup for the first time, stepping onto the national stage.

However, growing challenges in Thurmaston — lack of facilities and limited support — led to a major decision: the club would relocate all teams to Necton Street, Syston, gaining brand new changing facilities and room to grow.

The move paid off. That season:

have made 50+ appearances, with Jadie Stone still the only woman to score 50 goals for the club.

A New Era (2024/25)

The Men’s Section made the bold decision to relocate to Asfordby FC, drawn by the exceptional facilities and support. Though further from Thurmaston, it represented a step forward.

• Men’s First Team won the Sunday Premier Trophy as underdogs

• Reserves won Division 2

• Women’s First Team battled strongly after promotion to Division 1

Records & Milestones

The club has seen 22 men reach over 50 appearances, with 6 surpassing 100.

6 men have scored over 50 goals.

On the women’s side, 8 players

The Women’s Section returned to Roundhill School, launching a development team — the Kits, opening the door for even more women to play. Founder James West took over as Vixens First Team Manager, managing both men’s and women’s first teams for the remainder of the season. When the Kits needed guidance, Sarah Jenkins stepped in as player-manager, providing both leadership and compassion.

Where We Stand Today

• Dylan Patel now leads the Men’s Team, keeping the spirit of competitive, inclusive football alive.

• The Vixens welcomed Assistant Manager Mollie Jowett, boosting the coaching setup.

• The Vixens relocated to Asfordby, while the Kits remain at Roundhill.

• Most significantly, the club has entered the Women’s FA Cup for the first time ever — competing at the highest level available.

From a humble village team formed on a park in 2017 to competing on the national stage — Thurmaston DPC FC continues to prove what passion, community, and self-belief can achieve.

NOTES FROM THE GAFFER

JAMES WEST

Welcome to this weekend’s matchday programme, and a very warm welcome to everyone joining us here at Asfordby for today’s Third Round Qualifying tie in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

We’re honoured to host Mansfield Town at Hoby Road this afternoon, and I’d like to start by expressing a huge thank you to everyone at Asfordby FC for their support in putting today’s fixture together. Their efforts behind the scenes have helped make this day feel as special as it deserves to be.

What an adventure it’s been so far. I chose to enter the competition this year because I believed our players deserved a new challenge, something to aspire to beyond the weekly grind of league football.

When I was growing up, the Women’s FA Cup Final was one of the few chances to see women’s football on television. I can still remember watching Rachel Yankey and that incredible Arsenal side, dreaming of what the women’s game could become.

side with players operating at a higher level than us, and it’s an absolute honour to share the pitch with them today.

But regardless of the result, we’ll approach the game with belief, positivity, and respect. We’ll play with a smile, with fire in our bellies, and with the full weight of your support behind us.

Thanks to the success of our Lionesses over the last five years, that dream has now become a reality. The growth of the women’s game is evident at every level including right here, at grassroots.

It’s been an unusual start: just one league game played, yet here we are preparing for our third FA Cup match. It’s been a logistical headache at times for coaches, staff, and players alike but it’s also brought out the very best in us.

All I ask from those in attendance is noise. For 90 minutes, lift our girls. Back every tackle. Cheer every run. Make Hoby Road feel alive. They will give you everything so give them everything back.

I want to give a very special thank you to my parents. You’ll see them at the gate today, welcoming everyone in with a smile, a joke, and if you’re lucky, handing out a flag or two for the kids. They have been my constant support system and, without ever asking for recognition, have become unofficial but indispensable members of the DPC family.

With no fixture last week, the squad had a chance to rest some tired bodies after that unforgettable win over Coalville. From 2–0 down to winning on penalties against a team we’d never beaten before, that day will stay with me forever. It stands as one of the proudest moments of my managerial career, and a testament to the fight and character within this group.

This week has been all about recovery and focus. We know what Mansfield Town will bring. Quality, strength, and experience. They’re a well-established

My dad has always been the one doing the unglamorous jobs. Collecting kits from the cleaners, clearing dog mess off pitches, and handling all the little tasks nobody notices but everyone relies on. My mum has always been the friendly face on the touchline, looking after players, supporters, and anyone who needed a bit of kindness on a Sunday.

They’ve watched this club grow from what started as my “daft little idea” into the thriving grassroots football family we have today.

To both of you, thank you, as always, for everything. Love you both.

So grab a pint (I’m always partial to a Neck Oil, if you’re asking), lose your voice, and most importantly, enjoy today.

Because days like this don’t come around often and I can’t promise I won’t cry again this week.

Westy, Viva La Thurmo!

A MESSAGE FROM THE SKIPPER

EMILY LOCKETT

Wow, what a start to the season we have had! It’s an incredibly proud moment for me to be writing this column for you, knowing that we are about to play in the third qualifying round of the FA cup – a competition that Thurmaston DPC has never entered prior to this season. I’m starting my fourth season with Thurmaston, and for me games like this are even more special as I get to experience them with my closest friends. Personally, the back end of last season and over the summer has been extremely tough for me, due to circumstances in my work life. It’s been Westy and the team who have got me through it – having football to look forward to on a weekly basis gave me a purpose, and assisting Westy and Mollie over the summer in improving all aspects of the club has kept me focused. Thurmaston DPC is in the best position it’s been in years, and I get excited every week to pull the shirt on and play, knowing that I have the most supportive people around me.

be a tough one! To go 2-0 down in the game, was incredibly frustrating and it’s not something we’ve experienced as a team yet this season, so it was a real test to our character as to whether we could get back into the game or not. The team dug deep and showed immense resilience and determination, with our first goal being somehow bundled in off Abbie Sandle’s nose and our second was an absolute rocket scored by Evie Ludlow. To penalties it went, with our keeper Zoe Hill saving two and Katie Stones stepping up to score the winner. Being honest, I struggle with the words to describe the feeling I had at the end of the game and I can feel myself getting emotional again just writing this - it’s a moment I look back on with huge pride.

Moving forward to this week, we have trained well and set the tone for this game. Every player is ready and motivated for success. We know the challenge that we face in Mansfield – a strong and experienced team, playing in a league two tiers higher than us, but we’re capable of rising to that.

Our pre-season has been really positive, under our manager James West and assistant, Mollie Jowett. Westy had to unexpectedly step in to manage the Vixens this time last year, after the sudden departure of our previous manager, so last season was a period of change. Over pre-season and throughout September however, Westy has brought the much needed consistency and commitment to the club, and Mollie brings in new ideas and experience from her time coaching at various clubs across the East Midlands. She has brought a fresh energy into the team, and is responsible for our improved fitness and strength & conditioning training! As a pair, they have built a strong, motivated environment for us and every player is embracing being a part of this squad.

Our second round qualifying game was against Coalville, a challenging team in the league above us, who were unbeaten last season, so we knew it was going to

I’d like to take a moment to thank the clubs sponsors, and our friends and families who have been unwavering in their support so far this season. There really is a special feeling around the club this year, and that’s only possible with your support and the environment that people behind the scenes have built for us.

Personally, a special shout out has to go to my Mum who attended her first football game in about 10 years when we played in the last qualifying round against Coalville. I saw her jumping up and down celebrating when we won, and I believe she loved it – so thank you Mum.

Please, make some noise today and get behind the team, we will leave everything out there and give it our all.

Thank you and enjoy the game!

THE LAST ROUND

The Adobe Women’s FA Cup Second Qualifying Round

Mander Cruickshank Solicitors Stadium. LE67 3DA Sunday 21st September 2025 | Kick Off - 14:00

(4-5 Penalties)

Thurmaston travelled to Coalville Town on 21st September, for a tough FA Cup second round qualifying clash. We knew the challenge that lay ahead, Coalville had been promoted into the East Midlands league for the 25/26 campaign, after an unbeaten season last year.

Both teams started the game well, with numerous chances had by Thurmaston DPC but we just couldn’t find the net. It was Coalville who struck first, scoring from a free kick after winning a foul on the edge of the area.

Thurmaston went into half time 1-0 down.

After a motivational half time team talk, the players came back out onto the pitch full of determination. But an early mistake at the back was pounced upon by Coalville’s strikers and they made it 2-0.

We found ourselves in a situation that we hadn’t faced this season yet, 2-0 down, with half an hour to go. A job needed to be done and it was now or never. A

testament to their character, Thurmaston showed real character and resilience to fight their way back into the tie. Abbie Sandle sparked the comeback, bundling the ball into the back of the net from a well-delivered ball from Libbie Taylor to pull a goal back. Soon after, Evie Ludlow, who has stepped up from the Kits side, produced a moment of magic, unleashing a thunderous strike that rocketed into the net to level the score.

With the momentum clearly shifting, Thurmaston dug in and defended superbly to take the game to penalties.

Zoe Hill, our goalkeeper, produced two fantastic saves and it was Katie Stone who utilised all of her experience to score the final penalty and win a place in the next round. Overall, a fantastic team effort, full of determination and spirit, against a strong opponent.

PROUD TO SPONSOR THURMASTON

DPC FC

Brandsby Project Services were in attendance for our historic Adobe Women’s FA Cup Second Round Qualifying victory over Coalville Town, cheering on the Vixens during one of the club’s most dramatic performances to date. Although they’re unable to join us for today’s fixture, we caught up with them earlier in the week to gather their reflections and well wishes ahead of kick-off.

You were there to witness our thrilling FA Cup comeback against Coalville Town — what were your overall impressions of that match and how did it feel to experience it from the sidelines?

“It was incredibly exciting!”

“A real rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish.”

“The comeback was outstanding — the belief never faded.”

“The resilience shown by the team was tremendous.”

What inspired you to get involved with Thurmaston DPC FC and offer your support to the women’s team?

“We wanted to support our daughter’s team, but also knew the club had

gone through a lot — especially after the setbacks following the cabin fire. It felt important to help give them a lift when they needed it most.”

Since you’re unable to attend today’s match, if you could send one message to the squad before they walk out onto the pitch, what would you say to them?

“Stay positive and keep pushing. We’ll be cheering you on from afar — and make sure Westy keeps us updated with a running commentary!”

As ever we’d like to thank BPS for supporting the Vixens and the club and being part of the DPC Family.

TODAY’S VISITORS

MANSFIELD TOWN

This weekend we welcome Mansfield Town Women to Asfordby in the FA Cup. Mansfield are a strong, well-organised side who’ve shown real quality in recent seasons, most notably winning the Nottinghamshire Women’s County Cup last year. They come into this tie with good momentum and plenty of experience in knockout football, which makes them a tough test for us.

We know they’ll be competitive all over the pitch and will look to punish any mistakes, but that’s the challenge of the FA Cup. For us, it’s about matching their intensity, staying disciplined, and showing our own qualities. It’s a big occasion for both clubs, and we’re looking forward to what should be a fantastic game of football.

LAST ROUND RESULT

The Adobe Women’s FA Cup Second Qualifying Round

A CHAT WITH

ABBIE SANDLE

Abs has been on the score sheet in both of our previous FA Cup Qualifiers, we caught up with her to find out how she is feeling ahead of today’s game.

How are you feeling going into such an important FA Cup tie this weekend?

I’m feeling invincible after our cup run so far and I can’t wait for us to go out there and show Mansfield what we’re made of.

What’s the mood like in the dressing room ahead of the Mansfield Town game?

There’s always good tunes and good vibes and this time I think there will be that little extra focus and determination.

Do you prepare any differently for a cup match compared to a league fixture?

Although my pre-game prep usually looks different to most peoples having usually finished work at 6am, I do like to stick to routine in terms of what I eat pre-game etc and treat every game as the last.

How would you describe the team’s journey so far this season?

Given this is the first time Thurmaston have entered the FA cup, we have done immensely well and I’m so proud of us all.

Are there any standout moments from this campaign that have brought the team closer together?

Zoe’s outstanding performance in the last penalty shoutout out and the celebrations that followed were very special.

What does playing in the FA Cup mean to you personally?

The FA cup is a privilege to play in and by far the most important competition of the season. It gives the chance for grassroots teams to showcase their players and be a part of something much bigger.

A – ALL-time favourite football player

Jill Scott - not only does Jill have over 160 caps for England and have 10 major tournaments under her belt, she is so down to earth and such a good role model for young girls. We will forget about the time she was seen to famously shout something obscene in the Euro 2022 final because after all, she was vital in helping us lift the trophy.

B – What BOOTS do you wear & your preferred BOOT BRAND

I’ve just hung up my Nike Mercurials and switched to Adidas F50 Club’s. Let’s hope the new boots bring us some good luck!

C – Your go to CELEBRATION when you score?

I didn’t think I had one but looking through our photos, it appears as though I throw my hands in the air and run until I find some teammates to jump on. Perhaps I’ll think of something more exciting for next time.

D – Who is the worst DANCER in the squad?

With so many fresh faces this season it would be unfair for me to comment, I will have to wait and see after our next social who can and can’t throw some shapes.

E – What do you like to EAT before a game?

Poached eggs on toast, particularly on warburtons thick white toastie bread and an unhealthy serving of butter.

F – Who has the worst FASHION sense in the squad?

Libbie when she wears her pantaloons.

G – What is the best GOAL you have ever scored?

It has to be the most recent header against Coalville in the second round qualifying of the FA cup to get us back in the game.

H – How do you keep yourself HYDRATED & HEALTHY throughout a season?

Lucozade sport is my go to hydration drink on a Sunday, however if I’ve had one too many the night before, you’ll usually find me drinking a litre of chocolate milk. I enjoy jogging, hiking and I’ve recently dabbled into rugby too.

I – Who is the biggest INSPIRATION in your life & why?

My parents - they’ve achieved so much and have the kindest hearts despite all the challenges they’ve faced.

J – Who is the biggest JOKER on the team?

I feel like I have to give this one to Westy, can always rely on him to be doing something goofy.

K – What KIT number do you love to wear & why?

Lucky number 6. It was the first number I wore and it has stuck with me wherever I’ve played.

L – What is the biggest LESSON that football has taught you?

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. I learnt this the hard way playing for Loughborough in 2020, losing a BUCS final to a team in a lower league. But the tables have turned now, and at Thurmaston we have proven against Coalville that we can beat teams who play in a higher league.

M – What is your go to pre match MUSIC?

Black widow by Mackey Gee (Shout out to former player, Erin, for that classic).

O – Can you describe your personality in ONE word?

Energetic.

P – What is your favourite POSITION to play?

I’m a centre half through and through and that is definitely where my expertise lie, hence in a very competitive game against a tough opposition I want to be controlling the line and putting in those last ditch tackles to keep a clean sheet. However, recently I have enjoyed a new challenge playing CDM and this is a position I would love to continue to develop when the stakes are lower.

Q – What is the best QUALITY you need in a teammate?

Someone that I can trust on and off the pitch, to have my back and work hard.

R – How do you normally deal with a REFEREE’S tough decision?

N – Who is the NICEST player in the squad?

Zoe - she has the kindest heart and is always looking after us all; Dotty has taught her well.

After a little moan I will try my best to remain calm and respectful, but sometimes passion gets the better of us.

S – Which football club did you grow up SUPPORTING?

Despite growing up near Brighton and having 2 older brothers, I haven’t grown up supporting a team as none of my family have any interest in football.

T – What TV-SHOW are you currently watching?

Married at First Sight

U – What is the most UNFORGETTABLE moment of your football career?

Playing Loughborough Lightning last season at the Loughborough University Stadium which is my old stomping ground. Competing against a team who are now in Tier 3 and keeping the score line as low as we did is something to be proud of.

V – VACATION spot you’d love to visit after the season?

I do normally like to chase the sun and go somewhere hot, however next year I would love to do some of the NC500 in Scotland to explore the beautiful coastline.

W – WHO is your best friend in the team & why?

I wouldn’t say I have a ‘best’ friend in the squad, I get on with everyone equally and I’m lucky to have met some amazing people that have helped me personally and on the pitch too.

X – What is the worst injury (X-RAY) of your football career?

I have fractured my wrist but it didn’t hurt half as much as spraining my ankle which I have done far too many times to count.

Y – How many YEARS have you played football for?

17 - I started off playing as part of a programme at school to get more girls into football and I’ve never looked back.

Z – What is your ZODIAC sign and do you believe it matches your personality on the pitch?

Aries are courageous, passionate, energetic and a bit of a control freak, all of which I would say is pretty accurate. However, we are supposed to be impulsive, something that I definitely am not, I like everything to be meticulously planned.

A CHAT WITH

EVIE LUDLOW

Evie has been an inspirational addition to the club. Since joining the Kits halfway through last season, she’s impressed everyone, earned the captain’s armband, received a call-up to the FA Cup squad, and even scored the equaliser in the last round.

A – ALL-time favourite football player Lucy Bronze.

B – What BOOTS do you wear & your preferred BOOT BRAND

I am currently wearing predator boots but always go with adidas.

C – Your go to CELEBRATION when you score?

Look in disbelief that it actually went in.

D – Who is the worst DANCER in the squad?

I will have to go with Georgia for that one as some questionable dance moves have been seen in mosh.

E – What do you like to EAT before a game?

Squares Bar

F – Who has the worst FASHION sense in the squad?

Going to pick on Demi for this one.

G – What is the best GOAL you have ever scored?

The goal against Coalville in the FA cup to get us to penalties was probably the most important goal I have scored.

H – How do you keep yourself HYDRATED & HEALTHY throughout a season?

I love water and try to drink more on a match day. Eating a balance diet will always be a priority so I feel fuelled and recovered for games.

I – Who is the biggest INSPIRATION in your life & why?

The girls I coach for inspire me to remember why I started playing football in the first place.

J – Who is the biggest JOKER on the team?

Freya never fails to come out with something or other that makes the whole group laugh.

K – What KIT number do you love to wear & why?

I love to wear the number 8 it’s always been my favourite number since I was young and I used to love it because when you flip it round it makes the infinity sign

L – What is the biggest LESSON that football has taught you?

Football has taught me to always work hard, especially for me I have never been the most skillful or tactical player but as long as I work my socks off when I am on that pitch I know I are done all I can and that’s the same for other areas like at work or at uni.

M – What is your go to pre match MUSIC?

I have to say I love a sad song “ this town” by Niall Horan will always be my fav

N – Who is the NICEST player in the squad?

Katie is so so lovely!

O – Can you describe your personality in ONE word?

Bubbly.

P – What is your favourite POSITION to play?

Anywhere in the midfield.

Q – What is the best QUALITY you need in a teammate?

Communication is vital on the football pitch.

R – How do you normally deal with a REFEREE’S tough decision?

I have had a tendency to react to reffing decisions when they come about but I am definitely learning my lesson as to not react out of anger and to look at the situation as a whole.

S – Which football club did you grow up SUPPORTING?

Leicester was always by local team which my dad supporting so would go to games with him a lot.

T – What TV-SHOW are you currently watching?

The tv show I am always watching every week without doubt has got to be casualty it’s my fav.

U – What is the most UNFORGETTABLE moment of your football career?

My first goal against Leicester city development team will always be a special moment for me.

V – VACATION spot you’d love to visit after the season? Greece.

W – WHO is your best friend in the team & why?

Nardy has to be my bestie on the team, she is always there to listen and leads by example every week she’s so easy to talk to and the best person!

X – What is the worst injury (X-RAY) of your football career?

My blood clot I had this season has been tricky to navigate.

Y – How many YEARS have you played football for?

I have played since I was about 10 so 10 years but took a big break when I was 16.

Z – What is your ZODIAC sign and do you believe it matches your personality on the pitch?

I am a cancer, I believe it is similar to what I am like on the pitch but would need to mention my competitive nature for it to be more accurate.

THE KITS

The kits took on market Bosworth this week and after a defeat to Coalville we knew we had to go out fighting. After market Bosworth previous results we knew that it wasn’t going to be easy and a difficult game.

In the first half the kits pressured from the beginning after a run down the wing from Kaisey unfortunately one of the market Bosworth girls suffered a huge injury. The whole team was just like to wish her a speedy recovery once the game got to go in again, the pressure continued. Evie Ludlow, the captain, picked the ball up in midfield ran towards the defence crossing a lovely ball to Kaisey who slotted at home to open up the score. The remainder of the first half continued with pressure from both teams unfortunately we were not able to get another goal.

After the halftime break, we knew that a result today would be a huge boost for the team. We continued to pile on the

pressure and Bosworth did the same. Unfortunately towards the end of the second half we picked up a few injuries which saw the changes. We managed to battle all the way to the end to keep the clean sheet and get the three points.

The kits girls make me proud of them every single week with the progress the determination and team spirit throughout. As we continue on for the rest of the season we hope these results just keep on coming.

On Sunday, we play Melton vixen in the cup where we hope to get another great result and put in the hat for the next draw.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the vixens on the huge achievement in the FA Cup and wish them all the luck in the world for Sunday’s game. Everyone is behind you, Viva La Thurmo
