FAKENHAM BRANCH IS NOW OPEN

We are very pleased to announce that our move from Eagle Iron Works, Sculthorpe to new premises just a few miles down the road on the outskirts of Fakenham is complete and we are now back open fully for business. The new facility sees the size of the current workshop double and we will now operate with 8 roller shutter doors, as opposed to only one door at the previous workshop at the Sculthorpe branch. This will allow for increased versatility and flexibility in our working patterns and the responsive service we aim to provide to our customer base. Four new fast service bays are being created to the front of the facility, whilst a new workshop extension has been erected from the current building to the south west of the site. This new workshop gives us the ability to carry out service activity on larger machines that may require repairs of a more technical nature.

The new showroom will house openplan office space and an improved farm sundries retail area. A section of the open-plan area will be allocated to our new Honda ATV franchise, as well as other long-standing brands such as STIHL and Kubota. We will be further enhancing our parts storage facility with the investment of three vertical carousel storage systems, a first for our business. This will undoubtably afford us better use of space for our core parts holding. Re-locating the branch is a significant project for the Sculthorpe team but everyone is pleased with the improved working environment and increased opportunities this presents. From a customer perspective, we hope you will agree that this move demonstrates the Company’s long-term commitment to the Norfolk farming community.

How to protect your GPS equipment from thieves In recent times we have seen a dramatic increase in rural crime. This has affected many users of modern agricultural equipment. Any theft of GPS equipment has a dramatic effect on the user abilty of the machinery we use today and in many cases it will stop the ability for it to be used at all. Here at TNS, we take this subject very seriously and here are some tips we suggest to help you protect your equipment:

1 Remove the equipment where it is possible. 2 Ensure equipment is insured when not attached to the tractor.

3 Mark the equipment with a security device. 4 Ensure your data is backed up 5 Document all your serial numbers 6 Ensure you know your unlocks This may mean extra work, but it’s well worth the effort. At the 750-acre Rippon Hall Farm, Hevingham, Norfolk, farm manager Steve Howard grows a range of combinable crops, along with potatoes and sugar beet, plus an area of grassland to support a pedigree British White beef suckler herd. With soils being mostly sandy loams with some clay, the farm maintains a traditional two-pass approach based on the plough and drill. Though if conditions are dry enough, a pass with a cultivator can set land up ahead of the drill. “Our old 3m cultivator-based drill with Suffolk coulters was up for replacement, and while it served us well most of the time, it struggled late-season to achieve a good enough seedbed,” says Steve. “In less than ideal conditions, we needed a better combination, and I believed a power harrow drill combination with disc coulters was a more logical solution for our system.” His thought process led him to a 3m e-drill Compact from TNS Sculthorpe. Equipped with an 1,100-litre hopper, the outfit uses 24 CX-II coulters, NGH power harrow, 575mm packer roller and Focus 3 control box. And two seasons in, he says the drill has exceeded expectations. “I’m very satisfied with the combination,” he says. “2019 was one of the most difficult seasons I can remember, with

very limited drilling windows between deluges of rain. But I’m pleased to say we didn’t have to revise our rotation and we managed to get all our wheat in. It would have been beyond the capability of our old outfit.” Impressed by the outfit’s build quality, he has praise for the three rows of staggered coulters which offer ample space to avoid blockages in trashy conditions. “It’s easy to lift the coulters out of the way, hydraulically, to work down headland furrows,” he says. “This is a user-friendly combination.” Steve says that the electronic calibration is both straightforward and accurate, and seed placement is noted as first class – even at speeds of up to 16kph on cultivated land, following oilseed rape. “We usually run at 8-10kph straight behind the plough,” he adds. “Speed is limited by tractor power as it’s used with a 140hp JD 6140R. I think 160hp would be better, as unsettled, light land can sap power.” “And to avoid over-working our lighter soils, we need a minimum of 9kph – ideally, we’d be running around 10-14kph, so output isn’t bad for a 3m machine. It’s covered around 800 acres so far, and signs of wear are minimal.” Article supplied by Kverneland

The G261 RD is available with a 1.2m (48in) rear discharge rotary deck with optional mulching kit and has a travel speed up to 19kph -the fastest in the industry - giving high outputs in a variety of amenity applications including parks, sportsfields and open spaces. Powered by a 25hp Kubota Stage V engine, the G261 RD has a new hydrostatic transmission with cruise control, offering extra traction and grip, plus a differential lock for ease of operation and confident performance on sloping terrain. An electromagnetic pto clutch makes for improved transmission of power and smooth engagement of the deck; for further ease of use, independent height of cut control gives mowing height selection from 25-102mm. The rear discharge deck has been adapted from Kubota’s well-regarded BX compact tractor and thus has a very strong and robust design.

Versatility is added with the option of a mulching kit – the G261 RD can handle lush, long grass in rear discharge format, or give a really clean finish on shorter grass, mulching the clippings and returning valuable organic matter to the soil. Operator comfort is afforded by a generous platform with easy access and folding ROPS for work under trees or in other height restricted areas, and access for maintenance is improved with a one-piece bonnet. Delivering high workrates yet capable of accessing restricted sites such as play areas and gardens via a 4ft gate, the G261 RD is an ideal mowing solution for businesses needing a versatile, capable ride-on mower. It is offered alongside the recently-launched G261 which is available with low and high dump grass collectors, and further enhances Kubota’s range of purpose-designed, operator-focused professional mowing equipment.

Review of new products with HE-VA & SKY Product Manager – Glenn Bootman HE-VA Disc Roller XL Following success in other territories around the globe, the big brother of the wellestablished standard HE-VA Disc Roller has now been in the UK for 12 months.

HE-VA Stealth Following the launch at LAMMA 2020 of the full range of Stealth machines, success continues at pace. This medium depth, low disturbance subsoiler hits the spot by both assisting the control of blackgrass (low disturbance) as well as supporting regenerative agriculture (soil conditioning – lifting without mixing).

Top Cutter Solo The increase in land sown with cover crops across the UK and Europe coupled with market sentiment led HE-VA to produce the Top Cutter SOLO. Front and/or rear mounted it can be tailored to suit customer requirements to bruise and speed up the destruction of cover crops and vegetable residue without total reliance of chemicals.

Sky Agriculture 3m to 8m drills Sky’s EasyDrill is one of the very few pneumatic direct drills that can truly be advocated as a direct, a min till, a grassland and a cover crop drill. Furthermore, on well consolidated ploughing it can also be used in conventional systems. Its low disturbance coulter and press wheel not only ensure minimal weed seed germination, they also keep HP requirement to a minimum. The new 20 Series was launched at LAMMA 2020 for both EasyDrill and MaxiDrill. The 20 series introduced a brand-new electronics system with a bespoke Quartz control box which provides user friendly touch screen electronic control of drill functions. It has also allowed for a fourth hopper to be added to the drills to give even more flexibility to farmers establishing cover & catch crops or wishing to apply a variety of fertilisers when seeding. At Cereals this year we were pleased to announce the UK launch of the 8m EasyDrill to run alongside existing 3m, 4m, and 6m drills.

40 YEARS SERVICE JOHN COUSINS IT MANAGER John started at F.A. Standen’s 40 years ago, in 1981, in the Parts Department, before joining Thurlow Nunn Standen as part of the acquisition. During his time at Ely and then Littleport, John also volunteered as a retained Fire Fighter at the local stations for over 33 years. From Parts, John moved into stock control/pricing, credit control & accounts, data control, before adopting the role of IT Manager. During his long career, John has seen a huge number of changes in technology, from the microprocessor Compaq, to what we have today! Intensive Farming Operation Requires High Output Machinery

Home Farm Nacton in Suffolk uses the 5.6m Major Cyclone to enhance overall field performance and maintain soil health for its intensive cropping operation. “We are custodians of this very valuable farming land and it’s incumbent on us to ensure we maintain the health, the productivity and the environmental status of the soil,” says Andrew Williams, farm manager at Home Farm Nacton Ltd near Ipswich in Suffolk. Since taking over management in 1996, Andrew and his team have turned the operation into an intensive farming enterprise supplying produce to major supermarket chains throughout the UK. Over thirty different types of crops are farmed on some 4,800-acres of land along the Orwell Estuary. “Because our land in general is so light, we can pretty much work it every day of the year,” continues Andrew. “We will often double-crop to maximise field performance, an example planting and harvesting vining peas during March to July followed by cauliflowers for the autumn and winter.” For his work he was recognised as Farm Manager of the Year by Farm Business Magazine in 2019.

Early focus on organic produce “We started focussing on organic production some twenty years ago and currently, around ten per cent of our acreage is under Soil Association organic 34 certification,” added Andrew. “We constantly monitor

future market demand for organically grown crops and we see this potentially increasing in the years ahead.” In addition to certification by the Soil Association and LEAF, Home Farm Nacton Ltd. grows produce under the Red Tractor Assured Food Standards. It also holds many ‘quality’ food standards set by most of the UK’s premier supermarkets. Maintaining soil health ensures the land remains productive throughout the year. “We grow lots of cover crops,” Andrew explains. “We sometimes use sheep to graze after harvesting field produce and regularly mow grass, clover, herb crops and stubbles to recycling valuable green manures. By retaining a high level of organic matter in our soils we are able to maximise yield while ensuring a healthy growing medium for now and into the future.”

Rotary style Cyclone outperforms flail mowers Recycling crop residue and green manure requires intensive mowing practices. The farm relied on flail mowers for stubble management but the machines required high fuel consumption and maintenance costs. The flails were also unreliable and delivered a poor finish. “Flail mowers need regular blade sharpening and the power requirements are significantly more for dull blades, which means great fuel consumption and less efficiency,” Andrew explains. “The rear roller bearings needed replacing regularly. Plus, you had belts, which in a high horsepower situation, are really not the best drive option.”

Home Farm Nacton in Suffolk uses the 5.6m Major Cyclone to enhance overall field performance and maintain soil health for its intensive cropping operation “We took a look at the Major Cyclone at the LAMMA Show and were really impressed with the build quality and the low power requirement,” enthuses Andrew. “The direct drive transmission meant doing away with belts and the promise of a much better finish to all kinds of crop stubble and grassland areas.” Local dealer TNS offered a demonstration of the Major Cyclone in 5.6m working width on harvested cauliflower stubble. “We were really impressed with the excellent job it made,” Andrew adds approvingly. “It was a very clear choice to acquire the Major for our future operation because it does exactly what we want it to do.” The 5.6m Major Cyclone comes with eight rotors and 34 blades, ensuring all material is pulverised and spread evenly across the length of the machine. The wings of the mower can fold up to a transport width of 2 metres. Constructed of high-performance Strenx™ 700 MC structural steel and fully galvanised, the mower is built for endurance, strength and longevity.

“Enhances overall field performance while saving at least twenty-five percent (25%) on fuel consumption” “We are getting much higher output from the Major Cyclone,” added Andrew. “It covers twice the area compared to the flail in the same about of time, enhancing our overall field performance while saving at least twenty-five percent (25%) on fuel consumption.”

Cyclone blade system encourages faster regrowth “A clear benefit to our operation is that the Cyclone pulverises whatever we throw at it and it spreads it very evenly without producing clumps of material,” Andrew points out. “That was one of the big failings of the flail mower, leaving uneven clumps behind wherever it went.” “In our parsley crop, for example, we normally mow three times a year between harvests. The finish from the Cyclone encourages a faster regrowth. Likewise, we use the Cyclone for other maintenance applications throughout the farm from general field and woodland management to field corners and margins - it really is a versatile and trouble-free machine,” Andrew exclaims. “Maintenance is very simple, just a regular greasing. The blades don’t seem to need sharpening anywhere near as much as the flail mower and yet it produces a much better job,” explains Andrew. “It’s turned out to be a highly usable piece of machinery that helps us to maintain our goal of farming to the highest professional standard, maximising yields whilst maintaining, developing and enhancing the environment we operate in,” Andrew concludes.
