As the New Year starts, we look forward to what lies ahead. At the end of 2021 we started reviewing the forecast for 2022. Supply will still be a challenge throughout our businesses as I reported in our last edition, with most manufacturers currently quoting long lead times. We have been fortunate to secure 2 good supply levels and hope this
In a few weeks’ time we will hold a 2-day conference where we will introduce our annual plans to our teams. This year our focus will be firmly on employee retention and customer engagement. We all know our industry needs more focus, to make it more interesting to those from outside Agriculture. I am sure all business leaders know that without great colleagues we wouldn’t have such great businesses. I would like to use this New Year’s message as the perfect opportunity to express my thanks to all our employees for their support over the past challenging year. This year will hopefully bring back ‘Show Season’ as deep down we
have missed these opportunities to thank our customers for their support during the prevailing years. I know my father especially values this time more than any other, it’s a time that brings back fond memories to us all and I’ll make sure the fridge trailer is working as we hope for good weather. Providing GPS sales, service & support Where have the past 12 months gone? Something we always say and as we get older, we say it more often! What a journey we, as a team have been on during this past 12 months. It was towards the end of 2020 when we received the fantastic news we were being granted the Trimble franchise. Along with the Trimble franchise came the new Brand of SymAgri. We believed it was important, given Trimble’s place in the market that the brand had the focus which an independent and dedicated team could bring to ensure high standards and support. Along with this comes the commitment of providing a range of precision farming solutions and products. Over the past year or so we have increased our portfolio and will grow this again in 2022. Watch this space for some exciting news! So what has the past 12 months been like for SymAgri? It’s fair to say nothing like we thought! The growth of the brand has outstripped anything we envisaged. We have now built an experienced team here to support customers, with support being our prime consideration and this has been the biggest investment area. This investment will ensure you, as the customer, always feel supported and have any downtime kept to a minimum. However, we have faced some challenges this year, which have affected all of our lives in the UK and globally and continue to do so. Supply issues early on being combined with being a new dealer certainly challenged us all. The situation has improved, but any investment on farms needs to be looked at earlier and earlier, planned well with involvement of your suppliers. We are ordering stock well in advance to compensate for long lead times and are confident for this coming year. It’s still worth talking to us and securing stock and we can also look at payment options and finance to aid any purchases. As we move into 2022 we see a new dawn with precision agriculture. You only have to look at the recent takeovers from the big manufacturers. SymAgri will be there at the forefront ensuring technology helps provide some of the solutions to the challenges faced. SMALL SCALE WONDER With over 200 different types of grass and wild flower varieties grown, Emorsgate Seeds knows a thing or two about ecological coverings for landscaping projects, rewilding and biological restoration. Among its wide variety of seed mixes are flowers such as the Moon Daisy, Corncockle, Sneezewort, Pheasants Eye and Cowslip, and grasses that include Brown Bent, Red Fescue, Meadow Grass and Birds Foot Trefoil. Its products have been granted a Royal Warrant, by appointment of HRH the Prince of Wales. “We’re farming for the wildlife, and we’re lucky enough to sell everything we grow,” explains production manager Carl Cockle. “But there have been times when we could have used more land, to allow us to experiment with more varieties.” Having produced native wild seeds for the last 40 years from its 60ha Limes Farm base at Tilney All Saints, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, the farm is expanding, having recently acquired an additional 178ha at nearby Marshland St James. The additional acreage will see an extra 40ha brought into wild flower seed production for collecting and multiplying wild seed, leaving the remaining land within an existing arable rotation. Crops are grown over a three year period, alternating between three years of grass and three years of flower varieties, with seed available to harvest from year two, allowing the farm to re-sow one third of its acreage each year. Having used a belt planter for years, the time had come to find more productivity to handle the extra workload, which is a task now comfortably handled by a Kverneland Miniair Nova five-row precision 6 drill, supplied by local dealer TNS.
“We’ve been looking for greater accuracy, better seed singulation and more output as we expand the business,” says Carl. “The Miniair is proving to be a very good drill, though as this is our first season with the drill, we’re still learning and working out ways of refining what we do.” He says the biggest challenges come with the smallest seeds. “Seed size isn’t always consistent, which does bring challenges,” he says. “But the Miniair lets you see what is going on through its clear seed throat. There’s no more guesswork, and with four different seed discs, we have some good options available for the varieties we grow.” “This year’s Corncockle crop is the best we’ve ever grown, and the drill never missed a seed,” he adds. Growing seed crops in one hectare blocks, using 50cm row spacings, makes it easier to run through the crop with weed wipers and hooded spraying equipment when applying herbicides. But with seed rates as low as 0.5kg/ha and as many as 12 different seed types planted on 18 hectares, the ability to avoid crosscontamination is as important as seed placement accuracy. “It’s such an easy drill to clean out, which means the risk of mixing seed types is dramatically reduced.”

Powered by the 50hp, Stage 5-compliant Kubota diesel, EVO 205D SURE-Trak features unrivalled safe and stable climbing ability from GreenMech’s SURE-Trak (patent pending) independently pivoting tracks system, coupled with up to 540mm of ground clearance. TNS SERVICE UPDATE
2021 has been another difficult year with Covid-19 not only in work but also in all of our personal lives. Looking back through the year we have not only kept our colleagues and customers safe by adhering to all government guidelines, we have kept our customers operating with minimal disruption whilst continuing to keep moving forward. We have launched Manitou virtually with systems, processes and technical training all delivered by the power of the internet. I am very pleased with how we all as a team made the integration of Manitou into the service department as successful as it has proven to be. Our technicians now operate paperless with the use of the IBCOS Gold Service App which was also launched virtually. We have welcomed new staff into the Service Department during the year, we have moved into a new workshop where our Fakenham branch will be able to operate more efficiently. So 2021 has been a very difficult year for us all but we have continued to work strongly as a team which will take us into 2022 in a very good position. 2022 will no doubt have it’s ups and downs but with the service team we have at TNS we will continue with our customers and suppliers to grow together. NEW EVOLUTION DRILLS The new Claydon Evolution mounted drill range takes direct strip seeding to the next level. It builds on the company’s 19 years’ experience of this technology, featuring the time-proven leading tine technique, and combines it with new operational functionality. With nine new models covering working widths of 3m, 4m, 4.5m, 4.8m, 5m and 6m, hopper size has increased to 1,910 litres for seed only units and a 2,700 litre tank for the 3m 3MF and 4m 4MRF split 50:50 between seed and fertiliser. The larger hoppers reduce downtime and increase output, while second and third hopper options for applying multiple types, varieties and sizes of seed further enhance versatility. Typical daily outputs range from 20ha for the 3m Evolution, which requires a tractor of a minimum of 150hp, to 40ha for the 6m version which needs a minimum of 300hp.
Seed depth adjustment is controlled hydraulically in the new Evolution range and improved access to the metering unit allows easier calibration. Front-mounted discs which are operated hydraulically from the tractor seat can be specified for seeding into high residue situations. The tried and tested front leading tine followed by 180mm A share is fitted as standard with a wide range of seeding share and boot options. Twin tine and disc kit options can be specified for low disturbance drilling.

Given the poignance of the day, staff and customers held a 2 minute silence to remember all those affected during the past conflicts and also sold poppies and collected donations on behalf of the Poppy Appeal. THE OPTIMA RS PROVIDES ULTIMATE PRECISION This Optima RS precision drill with e-drive and HD-II sowing units offers extended flexibility for Cambridgeshire grower Robert Stacey (left) and operator Jordan Abblitt, at Freshfields Farm, Ramsey Forty Foot. In conventional 12-row guise, the drill is used for sugar beet at 45cm row spacings; but when it comes to pumpkins, sweetcorn and squashes, six HD-II units are removed, allowing the Optima RS to sow pairs of rows within a threebed system. A further advance of the six-row format is the use of GEOSEED level two for pumpkin seed. GEOSEED offers a diamond seed pattern with 22.5cm seed spacing along each row. With such precise seed placement, labour-intensive weeding can be replaced by an RTK-guided mechanical weeder to run through the crop both with and across the rows. Supplied by TNS Littleport, the Optima RS provides Robert Stacey the ultimate precision and efficiency for seed placement and weed control.

FARM BOOSTS PERFORMANCE WITH MF 8S Tom Excell manages around 1000ha of light soils over chalk on the Six Mile Bottom Estate, near Newmarket, close to where Suffolk meets Cambridgeshire. Field sizes vary between 3ha and 52ha, producing combinable crops and sugar beet. The business employs two full-time tractor drivers, with a casual brought in for harvest. Today, the principal sources of power here are a pair of Massey Ferguson tractors – an MF 8S 205 Dyna 7 and an MF 8S 265 Dyna 7. “This is our third consecutive round with Massey as the main tractors,” Tom reports. “But, going back, we have run a couple of Massey 1200s!”
The MF 8S 205 principally works with a 5000 litre, 30m sprayer, also applying liquid fertiliser and providing back-up for other tasks, while the bigger machine takes care of all the fertiliser spinning and around 20 per cent of primary cultivations. This heavier work involves 100ha of ploughing (7-furrow, with press), carting corn and backing up on cultivations and drilling. 28
Tom explains that the brace of 8S’s replaced a 2014 MF 7618 D6 and a 2013 MF 7624 DVT in 2020, each of which had racked up close to 7000 hours. “It has been a huge step up from the 76/77 series in terms of operator environment and the level of technology, together with the increase in power – without too much more bulk!” he reports. “The air cleaner and radiator cleanliness have made a massive improvement in the daily maintenance requirement. “The bigger hydraulic pump has boosted the performance of trailed implements; while all-round visibility with the four-post cab is much better. “Also, auto-use of Dyna7 means you really can drive it almost like a CVT – just input a speed and the tractor does the rest, which is great on low- or no-draft tasks, “Very easy to use, such as spraying. When specifying the level of technology available within these machines, Tom decided to go for the Telemetry option. “It’s proving very useful for work planning, knowing how far across a field a machine is and the logging of any faults and services.” Tom is also happy with the level and quality of service he gets at the Thurlow Nunn Standen (TNS) dealership, where his main points of contact are with Matt Boardley and Chris Tew.

In summary, Tom is very positive about the MF 8S. “ All-round, they represent a huge improvement on the previous 200hp line-up,” he states. “As a place to sit, it is chalk and cheese, and, being 6’5”, not having the airconditioning in the roof area is a massive plus! ‘Very easy to use, comfortable and the back-up from TNS and Massey Ferguson we know from over the years is brilliant!
